Copeland Continues Sell-Off
Copeland Lumber Yards, Portland, Or., has found new owners for another handful of its locations.
Tum-A-Lum Lumber, Walla Walla, Wa., which operates l0 yards in Oregon and Washington, agreed to buy Copeland's locations in Carson City and Gardnerville, Nv,, and Susanville, Ca.
Parr Lumber, Portland, which bought six other yards from Copeland five months ago, also will acquire the Forest Grove, Or., unit.
Additionally, yard managers Grant Forest and Ray Cammabo, who have been in negotiations to buy the Newport and Waldport, Or., yards for over four months, expected their deal to close by Oct. L The locations will retain the Copeland Lumber name.

Copeland still has up for sale 42 other locations in western Oregon and Washington, Nevada and the Central Valley of California. The company had operated 68 yards in Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Arizona before announcing the liquidation of the chain due to owners Helen Jo and Bill Whitsell's plans to retire.
BC Completes Furman Buy
Boise Cascade Corp. Boise, Id., has completed its acquisition of privately held distributor Furman Lumber. Inc.. Billerica, Ma.
With the purchase of the 43-yearold company's l2 regional distribution centers in the East, Midwest and South, Boise Cascade will have a total of 28 DCs, overlapping with Furman only in Dallas. (see July, p. 39)
"We're proud to have Furman as part of Boise Cascade," said Stan Bell, vice president, building materials distribution division. "This allows us to serve a growing number of customers on a nationwide basis."
According to Bell, B-C will not be closing any locations. "We're going to continue to run both Dallas locations." he said. "Each has some differences in product lines and a little different customer base. Further, they're located at opposite ends of town."
Bell said Furman's management will continue in place. "The same people will be doing the same things, just with slightly different titles," he said. "They'll continue to operate from the offices in Billerica, as the Eastern Region. The BMDD locations will become the Western Reeion."
Universal Buys Back Stock
Universal Forest Products recently purchased 100,000 shares of its common stock, bringing to 207,201 the total number of shares repurchased under a five year, 1.8 million share repurchase program authorized by its board last October.
"Our stock repurchase program will be used to offset the potentially dilutive effects of options issued under our company's employee and outside director compensation plans," explained chairman Peter F. Secchia.
