EDITORIAI A Bruising Brawl

flNCe AGAIN, the forest products industry V is involved in a struggle to preserve its access to the nation's timber base. The situation has all the makings of as bruising a brawl as the industry has ever fought.

We're talking, of course, about the U.S. Forest Service's RARE II program, the Roadless Area Review and Evaluation. It's the second time around, hence the II, to decide once and for all whether some 62 million acres of public land will be allocated for multiple use so thit all the people can enjoy and derive benefit from the land or whether public lands will be locked up forever as wilderness, available only to backpackers, canoeists and hikers.

As this is being written, the first battle in what may be a long war is just being concluded; the Forest Service's gathering of public comments. It is now tallying the results and by January of next year it will present its recommendations to the Congress. Given the present condition of Congress, many do not see any final decision forthcoming until 1980.

The danger in this for the forest products industry is that the temptation exists to do nothing now and rely on a last minute crash program to

get as favorable a piece of legislation as possible to industry. We think this is a serious mistake. We also feel, incidentally, that too many who should know better waited too long to urge everyone who earns his or her living from forest products to respond to the early stages of RARE II.

Whatever the final recommendations of the USFS, now is the time to implement the plan (someone does have a plan, don't they?) to tell our side of the story.

The magnitude of the proposals in RARE II make it imperative that this ill-advised attempt to lock up millions of acres of productive forests and grasslands be prevented. If it should pass the supply of forest products would be severely strangled, with inevitable price increases all along the line. If you think prices are high now, what do you think this would do to the prices for buying and selling wood-based products?

Well continue to monitor the progress of RARE II and will keep you advised of its current status. Many of you have already written the Forest Service. Many more letters will be needed to convince Congress that we need to lock up 62 million acres of land as wilderness areas about as much as we need more inflation and another war.

Merchandising exotic hardwoods

UE TO THEIR unusually bright colors and distinctive grains. exotic hardwoods draw customers to the lumber yards that stock them. And exotics return high profits, usually 5Wo and up, according to dealers who make the extra effort to merchandise them.

Exotic hardwoods, all natives of the tropics, include zebrawood, padauk, wenge, gabbon ebony and bubinga from Africa; cocobola, purpleheart, lignum vitae and Brazilian rosewood from Central and South America; Indian rosewood, red narra and satinwood from the Orient; and others. Most are extremely dense, weighing from 4 lbs. to 7 lbs. per board foot.

The dealer's cost for exotics range from $2.50 to as much as $20 per board foot, depending upon the species. Ebony and lignum vitae are

most expensive; zebrawood, padauk and purpleheart ususally least expensive. With such costs even a small inventory of exotics can require a substantial investment, so inventory levels must be carefully watched.

The people at Southern Lumber, San Jose, Ca., among the best merchandisers of exotics, have stocked three 24'gondola racks near the front entrance with pieces of exotic woods and other hardwoods.

These small pieces have a combined retail value of more than$ 17,000. The exotics pieces are cut into squares, blocks and thin strips. They are displayed in shallow bins. Each piece is individually priced and stamped with the narle of the species and the region of its origin.

Most of these small pieces are sold for jewelry making, wood carving, gavels, pistol grips and other craft items. Many are purchased on impulse. Many carry a label that bears Southern Lumber's new trade mark.

"Those three gondolas generate the most sales per square foot of any footage in the store." notes Bruce Pohle, president of Southern. "It would take one full-time man to keep them always stocked properly." he adds.

Southern Lumber also stocks larger pieces of exotic hardwoods in 50' vertical racks in another section of the store. These pieces are priced individually or priced per lineal foot. All are S4S and have their dimensions written on them along with the species name.

last 20 years. "As a result of that kind of experience I want to trim out exotic inventory down to five or six species that have the best turn," Pohle said.

"Still, exotic woods are a tremendous drawing card," Pohle continued. "That's the single biggest factor for inventorying them." Southern has carried exotics for 25 years.

Story at a Glance

Despite high inventory costs, exotic hardwoods can return profits and be a strongcustomer draw display techniques are important . . sanding and resurfacing may be needed to retain a fresh look for some woods.

Jack Welty, owner of Sawdust and Shavings, a hardwood store in Riverside, Ca., reports similar experiences with exotics. "They have a limited inventory turn, but they are a great draw," he says.

"Exotlc woods enhance our image as a merchandiser of quality lumber," he says. "They represent perhaps l0% of our dollar volume, and customers drive all the way from Arizona to see our selection."

HARDWO0DS at Paul's Hardwood & Stained Glass, Covina. Ca., comprise half of firm's business, get prominent mention on front ol store. Company does a good business in hardwood chopping blocks.

In contrast to small pieces of exotic hardwood, however, these larger pieces turn slowly. For example, Southern has carried the same small inventory of Indian satinwood for the

Sawdust and Shavings' inventories exotics in 40 lineal feet of vertical racks. Long lengths are surfaced on two sides and one edge and priced per lineal foot. Small pieces are priced per piece. The store stocks up to 200 board feet of each exotic in 414 and

Everybody knows that the wall paneling most retailers carry is made largely from imported substrate (a platlbrnr on which a tlrral coating is applicd) of one kind or another. Much ol this is produced or plocessed in this country. It should be noted, however', that many overseas countries produce some very sophisticated wall panels thernselves which are readily available at attractive prices. Tliis seems particularly true where real wood faces are used in the more exotic species antl rucril.s altention.

Veneer strips (usually 1/10" x 3" wide) are also available in packagcs which can be put on walls in an infinite variety of patterns providing the same general rustic effect as the domestic product.

Very thin (l/85') veneers with a backing are also produced in 30" wide x 8' long rolls which can be

Hardwoods hit the road

LIARDWOOD beauty on wheels! I I That describes Selectorama Showroom, the slick new mobile exhibit of the Fine Hardwoods-American Walnut Association.

The exhibit demonstrates the unique beauty and appeal ofcharacter marked hardwoods. It was unveiled officially at the International Woodworkine Machinery and Furniture Supply Faii in Louisville, Ky., last month.

After that the association's promotion director, Charles H. "Chuck" White, and executive director Larry Frye, plan to take the exhibit on the road frequently during the remainder of this year and throughout 1979. Ports of call will include furniture and finish manufacturers, design centers and home shows in the Midwest. East

Gare and handling of hardwood

n S HARDWOOD lumber becomes Au rote and more common sight in retail lumber operations, knowledge of its care and handling becomes more important.

While its handling is similar to shop and moulding softwoods in many ways, different handling methods are imperative to ensure minimal loss and downgrade. Awareness of the problems discussed below might assist in better hardwood merchandising.

Storage in lift loads - Kiln dried hardwood should be packed in random width layers, reasonably close together, oriented with one end stacked even and solid. Most lifts are random length, but care should be taken that single unsupported pieces on the random length end of the lift should be as few as possible.

Storage of lifts left to air dryOrientation is less important than sticking. Sticking with stickers of equal thickness is mandatory. Sticking every 12 to 18 inches is recommended for most hardwoods so it remains flat.

Storage stand-up bins While stand-up storage is nol recommended for hardwood, some retail stores must

use their racks as they are. Three measures can be taken to care for the hardwood.

(l) If the floor of the rack is bare cement, cover the floor with plywood or some barrier to ensure no moisture transfers to the board end.

Story at a Glance

Tips on the care and handling of hardwood . . . storage in lift loads, stand-up bins, water damage possibilities, shipping, thickness factors . . . handling cost considerations.

(2) If ends are not square, square the boards or stack so that they stand up straight.

(3) Keep the boards straightened up and orderly daily so Ihat bow and twist is minimized.

Water Damage possibility - Dry storage is imperative for all surfaced hardwood. In case of emergency however, if rough mahogany, walnut or apitong are left in the rain, the damage is usually nil, excepting prolonged exposure.

Thickness - Most 4/4 hardwood should be ordered surfaced to 25132 or 13116 since after sanding it will match 314" plywood in thickness.

Weight DifferencesFor shipping purposes, remember that a 1 x 6 -12 pine will weight approximately l0lbs. whereas a I x 6 -12 oak or birch will weight about 18 lbs. When shipping quantities or handling lift lots in the yard, be careful to consider fork lift capacity when handling.

ShippingMost hardwood when surfaced is extremely "slick" when

VARI0US kinds of warp as illustrated in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Handbook. stacked several courses high. Surfaced birch, maple and ash are especiallY slick when stacked as a unit. If possible keep the unit banded, even between times of selecting orders from the load for safety in moving lifts. When shipping use stickers every few courses and secure tightly with tie down lines. Check load to be sure no boards in the center are loose as they could slip out during transit.

Handling Cost Considerations

Hardwood lumber has higher handling costs due to several factors. Some of these factors are:

(l) Board rule tallying which normally requires a grader and a lumber

Spanish cedar- iOle!

E ROM THE earliest days of l- a*ororu, ron ano colonrzarlon ln tropical America, Spanish-cedar has been one of the most important timber trees of the area.

The wood became an article for the export trade during the 1800s when the cigar industry demanded the use of Spanish-cadar for packing cigars. These fragrant boxes were common-place before rising costs in the 1930s finally forced the cigar industry to turn to paperboard or less expensive containers manufactured from soft native lumber. Spanish' cedar remains to this day as one of the most valued trees for local use in Latin America. ,In the areas of growth the tree and wood are generally referted to as cedro.

Spanish-cedar occurs from Mexico to Argentina and is found in all of the Latin American countries with the exception of Chile. The trees are almost exclusively restricted to welldrained sites and may occur in decid' uous forest or lowland and montane rain forest.

Under favorable conditions of growth, trees may attain a height of 185 feet and a diameter of 4 to 5 feet. The trunk is usually free of limbs for at least a single log length (16 feet) if the tree grows in the open. Trees developing under forest conditions may have trunks free of branches to a height of 75 feet or more above the ground. As these trees rarely develop greatly extended buttresses, almost the entire bole length is available for lumber.

Freshly cut heartwood is pinkish to reddish brown, but upon exposure it becomes red or dark reddish brown, sonietimes with a purplish cast. It is reported to be darkest when grown

on the drier sites, and this type of wood is preferred by the local craftsmen. The cell structure of Spanish' cedar ranges from virtually diffuse' porous as mahogany (Swietenia mac' rophylla) to decidedly ring-porous. The ring-porous wood produces a distinct growth-ring pattern on flat' sawn surfaces or rotary-cut veneer. The grain is commonly straight although sometimes interlocked. The wood has a medium-to-hish luster

which seems to depend on the color of the wood, being lowest in the lighter colored timber. A cedary odor, similar to that of the coniferous "cedars' is usually present due to the volatile oils or resins present in the wood.

When grown with abundant moisture, the wood is lighter in color, less dense, and has a lesser oil con' tent. Native craftsmen state that they can distinguish the lumber of different species of Spanish-cedar. In view of the statements of experts that the wood samPles of the dif' ferent Cedrela species exhibit the same qualities under test and show the same structure, it is believed that the named kinds of Cedrela of the natives are merely variations in density and color of wood due to the influence of environmental factors during the growth of the trees.

The wood of SPanish-cedar is coarser textured than that of mahog' any.

Story at a Glance

An aromatic, mahoganY-like hardwood, Spanish-Cedar weathers well without Paint, is easily worked bY hand and power tools, and is popular in the veneer and plywood industry.

On the basis of tests, Spanishcedar with an average specific gravity of 0.40 (based on the volume when green and weight when ovendrY) would be similar to Central American mahogany in most properties except in hardness and compression perpen' dicular to grain where mahoganY is definitely superior. Most of the im' ported wood falls into the 0.34 to 0.38 average specific gravity class.

The specific gravity for the various species of Cedrela ranges from 0.32 to 0.46, based on the green volume and ovendry weight, with an overall average of 0.38 for the genus.

I Spanish+edar is considered easy to season by either air-drying or kiln' drying methods. In the tropics it is common practice to end-rack the

'79 lumber demand called "acceptable"

Demand for western lumber in 1979 will be "acceptable," members of the Western Wood Products Association were told at a two-day fall meeting with a program including an economic report from H. A. Roberts, WWPA's executive vice president. More than 300 lumbermen from throughout the West were registered at the Scottsdale, Az., meeting.

''Increases in industrial and commercial construction, home repair and remodeling, and most other lumber markets should almost offset a downtrend in housing starts next year," he said.

"Even lumber exports to JaPan are almost certain to be uP."

WWPA is forecasting next year's housing starts at 1,750,000, though Roberts indicated it could well go hisher. The association's current esti-

mate for 1978 starts is 1,900,000, uP 50,000 from the March forecasts. Roberts noted that lumber production has been strong throughout the West this year, but especially in the coastal producing region of the Pacific Northwest, up 10% over early estimates.

Story at a Glance

Western lumber demand in'79 foreseen as "acceptable" at WWPA's fall meeting fed's RARE ll study termed a consumer rather than an environmental issue because of its impact on inflation and recreation.

"A strong Califomia market served to encourage coast mills to exceed themselves," he said. "And a strong western market and pick-up in export demand should keep coast shipments high on into 1979."

WWPA's member mills, located throughout much of the l2-state western lumber manufacturing region, produce about one-quarter of all U.S. softwood production annually.

In another presentation, WWPA President A. M. "Mickey" Whiting said that whether certain U. S. forest lands should be designated wilderness or production is a consumer issue. not an environmental one. Whiting is also chairman and president of Kaibab Industries, Phoenix.

"RARE II - A Community ViewPoint"

T HIS editorial is being written

I from Salmon, Idaho, a community with a population of 2910.

It derives its name from the Salmon River, which flows through the center of town and winds its way to the Snake River.

Salmon is in a valley bordered by mountains covered with timber. The economy depends primarily on lumbering, with some farming and cattle ra$1n9.

While in Salmon I talked with two young men whose [velihood is dependent on the forests.

One is a skidder whose business is to skid the cut logs down the mountainside and load the logs on trucks to be transported to the mills nearby. He has a personal investment of $50,000 in his equipment to do the skidding operation.

These young men are well informed on RARE II and are concerned about the possible setting aside of this vast forest area into a wilderness area. which would eliminate their iobs and ultimately effect the economy of the entire Salmon River country. The Community of Salmon and neighboring areas are dependent for half of their

economy on the forests which surround it.

These young men are doing something about it by contacting the Forest Service urging them not to recommend in the RARE II Study the setting aside of any additional wilderness in their area. I recommended to them to also ask their Chamber of Commerce to support their views.

Salmon is one of hundreds of communities which have the same life style dependent on the forests for a living.

As I write this, the situation hits very clsoe to home since my livelihood for the past 32 years, first as a lumber dealer and then in my present position, has depended on products from the forest.

The environmentalists and those in Congress who want to set aside our vast forests into wilderness areas should visit Salmon and get a firsthand look. Perhaps they would understand and change their views if their livelihood depended, like these young (Please tum to page 30 )

Labor Bill Update: The Senate Human Resources Committee has completed a somewhat abbreviated "second look" at S. 2467. Labor Law Reform.

The bill's supporters are trying desperately to bring it back to the floor of the Senate. The business community must continue to oppose the bill and any meaningless alternative measure offered in the form of a compromise.

Letlers and phone calls are still

A bill opposed by every member of the Alaskan Congressional delegation, HR-39, nonetheless passed the House of Representatives recenfly. The bill rules a gigantic area of Alaska offlimits to commercial development, despite documented evidence of its mineral and natural resource potentiaf.

The effects of the House action, if duplicated in the Senate and signed into law by the President, promises to be devastating on the lumber industry in future years.

There is some doubt that the bill will get through the Senate. If it does pass, however, the President is expected to approve it, A compromise bill is now before the Senate Energy Committee that would set aside 80.4 million acres.

UILDING MATERIAL Political ActionCommittee...

Last year a Political Action Committee was formed to assist building material dealers to protect their industry at the state level.

Dealers were asked to make contributions to the Political Action Committee based upon $100 contribution for each $ I million in sales volume. As a result of this solicitation nearly $13,000 was raised for political Action at the state level.

During the course of the Year, the PAC has made contributions to

those legislators who have shown their support for our industrylnd our needs. As an example, the Western Bui-lding Material Dealers Association drafted legislation, to belter protect the material supplier. Senator- Allan Robbins sponsoied this legislation and fought some fierce battles to glt it passed by the legislators. That bill is currently awaiting signature of Governor Brown.

It is this type support that our industry has been seeking for many yeiis and it is this type support that will help us stay in business.

We strongly support Senator Robbins and others who have demonstrated similar concern for our industry.

In several instances the Political Action Committee is supporting candidates to replace encumbents who are anti-business.

The PAC is non-partisan. If the candidate demonstrates he is supporting oui industry and small, business, or if he, through^his platlorm, is supporting small business we need him and will support him.

Our funds will soon be depleted but we have made great inroads in obtaining support for you.

Now it is time to come forth with your annual political action contribution.

Make your checks payable to Building Material Industry Political Action Committee (BMI/PAC) and send them to 1055 Lincoln Ave. San Jose, Ca. 95125.

We are on the way to becoming a strong business organization.

No Lumber tn Wood Wall

The Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wi', has obtained a patent on the design for a wood wall which contains very little lumber.

Research shows that a wall, roof, or floor section can be made with flakeboard and not contain solid lumber 2 x 4 studs. The design of these seqtions looks something like the sides ofa corrugated box, 2 flat face layers and a wavey center layer.

Studies are still required to see if this design is feasible and strong enough for all intended uses.

Should the design prove feasible, the completed panels might be put together in factories for use by the modular housing industry. The design could also cut materialshandling costs in production of modular houses.

New SF Hardwood Club

Managers and owners representing five San Francisco area hardwood firms recently banded together at Trader Vic's Restaurant in Emeryville to form a Bay Area Hardwood Lumberman's Club. By last month the group had already held its fourth meeting.

The Bay Area group is modeled after the Los Angeles Hardwood Lumberman's Club, a social organization of competitors that has met in Southern California for 9 years.

Charter members of the Bay Area group include Bill and K. E. MacBeath, MacBeath Hardwood;Harry Anthony, J. E. Higgins Lumber; Don White, White Brothers Hardwood; and Larry Knox, American Forest Products.

Bill MacBeath, the instigator behind the new club, has presided at meetings. Don White was elected historian. One of the group's stated purposes is to preserve the history of the hardwood industry in Northern California. The group also plans to hear guest speakers from U.C.'s Forestry Laboratory at Richmond.

MacBeath pointed out that in recent years the Justice Department has prosecuted more small businesses (firms with annual sales under $5 milton) for anti-trust violations than large firms. '"That's just one reason why our group must stay on a purely social footing," he said.

Jim Summerlin, president of the Los Angeles Club, said that the same principle certainly applies to his group as well. "It's strictly social," he said. "In fact, the only unwritten by-law of the club is that business may not be discussed at meetings."

The Los Angeles club's activities this year will include guest speakers, a charity raffle, a formal Christmas Dance, and the annual day at the Santa Anita Race Track.Members are hopefully planning for a three-day cruise from Los Angeles to British Columbia in the early suntmer of next year.

Members of the Southern California group represent approximately 9Wo of the major hardwood distribution yards in Los Angeles. The group began with 5 members in 1969 and has grown to 44 members today, including a few from out of state. Ken Tinkler, Stahl Lumber Co., was its first president.

Nov. Distributors Meeting

The national propefiy tax revolt, Employee Stock Ownership Plans, an expert look at the chances for continuing inflation and an inside look at pro sports will all be discussed at the upcoming Fall Convention of the National Building Material Distributors Association, being held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Ca., Nov 12 - 15.

Speakers include Louis O. Kelso, an expert on employee stock ownership plans; Howard A. Jarvis, known as Mr. Proposition 13 ; Brent Musburger, nationally-known CBS-TV sports commentator; and Dr. Ezra Solomon, the renown economist.

Oak for walls,ceilings

A program to permit use of unfinished oak flooring as a wall or ceiling material in commercial buildings requiring Class "A" (0-25) flamespread rated material has been announced by the Oak Flooring Institute, an association of hardwood flooring manufacturers.

Oak flooring has long been popular for special wall or ceiling treatments because of its beauty and low cost. The large volume produced makes it one of the least expensive of all solid hardwood wall coverings.

In certain commercial and institutional applications, however, local building codes restrict wall and ceiling surfaces to products in the Class r'A" flame-spread rate. This class normally includes such con' struction products as gypsum board, asbestos, masonry and other non' combustible materials.

The Oak Flooring Institute reports that the Class "A" tating can be attained by job-site applications of an

intumescent flame-proof coating. This material thickens rapidly into a protective foam when flame is introduced, thus providing the oak substrate with the necessary fire protection.

The transparent liquid coating seryes as a clear or natural finish. It may also be used over certain stains, allowing the beautY of the natural oak grain to be used as an interior design feature.

A special flame-spread information kit is offered by the Oak Flooring Institute. It contains application data and documentation for use with building code enforcement and inspection authorities when necessary to obtain approval of the Class "A" rating. Copies are available for $1 c/o the Oak Flooring Institute, 804 Sterick Building, Memphis, Tn. 38103.Or they may be requested from flooring manufacturing firms that are members of the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers' Association.

Southern Hardwood OutPut

Latest hardwood lumber production in the South showed that August was 4% htgher than July, according to the Southem Hardwood Lumber Manufacturers Association. Orders received increased 18% over the previous month and shipments were 4%fueher. Orders on hand were 4Vo higher than at the end of July while gross stocks wete 2% higher.

Compared to August 1977,Ptoduction was up 6%, orders received were 14% trigll.er with shipments down one percent.

Unfilled orders at the end of August were 40Vo higher than one year ago while gross mill inventories were down 6Vo.

New Mexico Solar Use

Although New Mexico has only 2 percent of the nation's population, almost l0 percent of the countrY's total number of passive solar homes are found in the state, according to a recent survey. This has been encouraged through a state income tax credit applying both to passive and active solar heat use.

"More than half of the specifications being written for wood in construction can't be met." (W.E. Moore).

"Ninety-five percent of those who buy wood never see what they get. It's an open invitation to suppliers to cheat." (John Hurley).

"Enough wood is wasted at any big home construction site to build another house." (Charles C. Shinn).

Statements like those by wood products and construction experts convince the people who'd like to see wood more widely appreciated and used that they won't realize that goal without some massive attempts at understanding.

One of the consequences is that W.O.O.D., Inc., the forward-looking Denver-headquartered organization oncerned with such understanding, is co-sponsoring a five-part seminar series that began Sept.22 and ends Feb. 16 at the University of Denver, in cooperation with DU's Beaumont Center for Management Development.

Denver seminars

'?eople that use wood, even some of those in the zupply end of the business. are relying too much on past experi ence and impressions," says John Hurley, president of W.O.O.D.,Inc., and VP. and general manager of Hurley Lumber Co., Denver. "Things change in this business two or three times a yeat, and with wood being a major component of the building industry, which itself is the country's second largest industry, neither user nor supplier can afford that lack of knowledge."

FREM@NT FREM@NT

The seminars on "Designing with Wood," are designed for men and women in all phases of building design and construction'who need to understand these latest technical advances in lumber and forest products.

Hurley, as a wood supplier himself, is as alarmed about over-specifying of wood as he is about under-specifying or supplying of less-than-adequate quality in wood and wood products. He cites poor techniques that have been used in good wood construction applications, and such wastage as officials specifying select structural wood for signposts.

He also laments misapplication of new techniques such as wood founda(Please turn to page44 )

this 4Vzton
- John Cameron Swavze

John C-ameron Swayze is a world expert on torture tests. But he had his doubts about this one.

In front of him was a t5rpical floor system (2 x l2-inch joist, 16-inch on center), built with Louisiana-Paciftc's ff nest exterior particleboardRedex. To demonstrate its strength, we were ready to march a four and a half ton elephant across its f;ace.

Swalze had good reasonfor being skeptical. Normally a beast like Tunga leaves quite an impression. Each step delivers 4,500 pounds ofpressure per square foot. Could Redex hold up underthis kind of punishment?

Swayze motioned the animal forward. The ffrst mammoth foot hit the deck. Hard. Then, all 9,000 pounds lumbered onto the Redexfloor. The structure, surprised bythe quick addition of such enormous weight, groaned. But held.

The veteran newscaster furned to the cameras. "There you have it,ladies and gentlemen. The amazing L-P Redex. Strong enough to hold this four and a half ton pachyderm!"

Why is Redex so strong?

Redwood particles have been mixed with er<tra long, o(tra strong ffbers of Douglas ftr. Then with phenolic resin, it is all bonded together under intense pressure and heat. Finally, the long edges are tongue and grooved and all four edges sealedto control moisture absorption.

The result is a board of excellent internal bond and rupture resistance. On top of that Redex knows howtotake a nail. Or a staple. And there are no face or core voids to contend with. No checking or delaminating. Redex can save you a ton of money too.

Forget about underlayment or other subflooring. Redex will handle everything. Which means you cut materials cost by about 30 percent for every 2,000 square feet compared to other usual flooring construction, at the same time taking a big chunk out oflabor costs.

Speaking of saving labor, Redextongue and groove also does away with the need for blocking. So installation time is reduced by 8 to 10 manhours per average home.

And look who approves:

Tirnga, however, wasn't ftnished. He began swaying back and forth, slapping the structure with his trunk. Then, with a sudden jerk, he thrust his body backward, reared on his hind legs and trumpeted to the awe-stricken Swayze.

The FHA, ICBO, BOCA and Southern Building Congress all say Redex meets or exceeds their standards. In fact, Redex has been tested by the Underuniters Laboratory and meets Class III Flame Spread rating.

And Redex gives savings you can count on. Because unlike plywood and some other building products, the price of Redex fluctuates very little. So there's less chance for a big surprise between the time you bid and the time construction starts.

Industry hits RR rate changes

Western lumber shippers have charged the Carter Administration with trying to "bail out the railroads with a leaky pail, allowing the American public to sink deeper into the sea of inflation."

At the same time, they say the railroads are literally pricing themselves out of the market.

"The government's case simply won't hold water." declared James G. Manning, transportation director for the Western Wood Products Association, following the September 15, cancellation of cheaper "blanket" rates from the 12 western states to the northeastern U.S.

The lumber industry has testified at every rate hearing in recent years that the railroads' problems ate not the kind that a mere increase in revenue will help. Instead, they say,

the railroads should seek to improve weak productivity from within rvithout calling on customers and the public to underwrite solutions to their problems.

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced support of rate increases to bring railroads a retum on investment of as much as l2%.

And a series of applications for increases are already being contested by western shippers. Manning said the abandonment of the blanket rates, which were first initiated in 1935 to help railroads compete with waterborne carriers, will increase the cost of shipping into the Northeast by an average of about 6Vo.

"We believe the blanket rute cancellations are illegal," the lumber shipping expert said.

"When they were insititued 43 years ago by the Interstate Commerce Commission, it was for competitive reasons. Because of that, the ICC must provide an open forum for shippers and the public before making such cancellations.

"But this time, rail users were denied the right to their day in court. The rates went up simply because railroads asked for them."

The lumber industry has long contended that the railroad rateraising philosophy actually hurt the rail systems, rather than helping. Shipping statistics tend to support that.

"Ten years ago, two-thirds of all western lumber was shipped to markets in the East, Midwest and South," Manning reported. "Today less than one-third of western shipments leave the West."

tions, which might help many builders during the current cement shortage. Because someone used shortcuts in building those foundations and they

subsequently failed on a small group of homes in Wyoming, everyone is shunning the technique, Hurley says.

Better knowledge of wood would also enable builders and specifiers to get fu bids. Because specifications are either poorly-written, outdated or non-existent on many requests, buyers are likely to end up with quotes on

Shepard and Morse Lumber Comp?ny

"apples and oranges," Hurley said.

Some confusion costs everyone unnecessarily, including the ultimate owner or user of the structure in which wood is used. The National Association of Home Builders estimates that about 20 percent of direct construction cost in homebuilding is lumber, reports Charles C. Shinn, Jr., director of aReal Estate and Construction Management program at the University of Denver and one of the speakers in the seminar.

The statement that less than 507o of the lumber specifications currently written can be met comes from another speaker in the seminar series, W. E. "Bill" Moore, a technical representative for the Western Wood Products Association.

Moore's session on "Western Woods, Their Basic Selection and Specification," opened the series. Roof and truss design, softwood plywoods, allweather wood foundations and sturdifloor systems will be covered by speakers on Oct. 20. Redwood specification and use and red cedar shingles and shakes get the spotlight in the Nov. l7 seminar.

Shinn covers wood from the builders viewpoint on Jan. 19, and a hnal session on Feb. 16 covers building codes as they apply to lumber and wood products, and glued, laminated timber.

lumber in the sun and little, if any, seasoning degrade is encountered.

Green wood shrinks about 2.1% radially and 3.O% tangentially in drying to a moisture content of l5%. Shrinkage from the green condition to ovendry is similar to that of mahogany.

Spanish-cedar wood contains a gumlike substance with a volatile aromatic oil. The exudate is likely to stain materials in intimate contact with the wood, and air-seasoned boards in intimate contact may become literally "glued" together. The use of Spanish-cedar dried by conventional methods is not recommended for such products as closed cases for clocks and other precision equipment because the volatiles condense on the metal parts thus reducing the efficiency of the mechanism. The volatile content of the wood can be materially reduced by kiln drying the unsurfaced stocks to a moisture content of 6% to 8% and then heating at 2000 F. for 8 to 17 hours at a relative

humidity of 6W. The oils and gums will exude to the rough surfaces, which can then be smoothed in the dressing process.

Among importers of Spanish-cedar it is the general consensus that wood from certain areas shows more exudate than others, the principal such areas being Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the Amazon region. Spanish-cedar from Mexico, British Honduras, and Guatemala infrequently shows exudations and is therefore favored.

DECAY RESISTANCE

In soil tests conducted at Madison, Wis., and Saucier, Miss., Ecuadorian Cedrela odorata was rated as resistant to very resistant with respect to fungus attack and rated as resistant to attack by two white rot fungi in pure-culture tests.

Tests made at the Yale University School of Forestry show Cedrela angustifolia to be quite variable in resistance to decay. The heartwood proved to be durable to moderately durable upon exposure to both a white rot funsus and a brown rot

fungus. Cedrela oaxacensis was rated as moderately durable to nondurable in resistance to a white rot organism and durable to moderately durable upon exposure to a brown rot fungus.

The heartwood is considered more resistant to dry-wood termites than mahogany, rating resistant as compared to moderately resistant for the mahogany. The wood is sometimes attacked by pin-hole borers and has low resistance to attack by marine borers.

The wood possesses excellent weathering properties when exposed to the elements without the protection of paint.

Spanish-cedar is worked very easily with both hand and power tools, giving good results in planing, s.fraping, mortising, and sanding. The wood is easily turned but is difficult to bore; torn and roughened grain occur in these operations. The presence ofgum in some material gives trouble in polishing but, in general, the wood stains and finishes well after filling. It has good nail- and screw-holding properties, is easy to glue, and is a fairly good bending wood. It is very popular in the veneer and plywood industry

because it peels cold, driesexceptionally well, and has good gluing properties. It is used locally for all purposes where an easy working, light but strong, straight-grained, and durable wood is required. The wood has characteristics which recommend it for millwork, cabinets, patterns, musical instruments, boats, decorative and utility veneer. It is still being used to a large extent in the form of very thin veneer for making cigar wrappers which are encased in cellophane and give the cigar a cedary odor formerly supplied by the box itself.

Spanish-cedar may be readily separated from other mahogany-like woods by the pronounced growth ring pattern which is distinct on all longitudinal surfaces. On a smoothlv cut end grain surface the growtir ring pattern is evident without magnification due to the larger sized pores in the earlywood zone and the wide band of light-colored parenchyma.

New Oregon Wholesaler

A new nationwide wholesaling service, Wysong Wood Products, for lumber, plywood and other wood products, has been formed in Eugene, Or., by William G. "Bill" Wysong.

Wysong has been affiliated with the industry since 1959. He was involved in the formation of the McKenzie River Plywood Corp. at that time and later became general manager of the firm for Georgia Pacific.

In 1969, Wysong became plywood sales manager and established the sales department for Corvallis-based Brand S Corp. He later merged the lumber and plywood sales departments and expanded into the export market.

Wysong says, "After 28 years in Oregon and 19 in the wood products industry, I feel that our new company will be able to offer a marketing service of unusual value to mills throughout the Northwest.

Home lmprovement Park

The "home improvement park" is the newest wrinkle in expanding the retail potential of shopping'center sites.

Oscar Reid, senior v.p. of Urban Investment and Development Co., Chicago, a major shopping center developer, explains that a home improvement park is a group of home improvement retailers in a single convenient location on the edge ofa regional shopping center.

"You could have a building materials store, appliance store, landscape center, paint and wallpaper store, lamp and light fixture salon, and related retailers, all in one location," he said.

There are two reasons for thinking that the home improvement park would be effective, Reid said. One is that

SUPPORT MERCY KILLING OF OLD TREES

"How would you like to be eaten alive by bugs? Support mercy killing of old trees! A noble giant of the forest. ruler of his domain for several hundred years deserves a more honorable death than to be eaten alive by insects!

"And you sawmills can go a step further and give these proud trees a dignified memorial service by selling the clear lumber to us. We will make mouldings and door jambs from the lumber which will be sent to the Deep South where they love to apply a natural finish rather than hide the beauty of the grain with (ugh) paint.

"Really now, does a 300 year oldtree deserve to be converted to plywood and be covered by a rug and walked on? Or be covered with vinyl and be put on a wall, made to look like ash or fruity pecan?

"We will treat your trees with the reverence and respect that they deserve. "

A HOME IMPROVEMENT PARK

(Continued from page 57 )

the major regional shopping center automatically generates activity on its periphery, as seen by the great number of retail establishments that spring up in the vicinity of major centers.

Another is that there are many home improvement merchants who either don't want or can't afford to be in the center itself, or who don't want the expense of develop' ing their own site on the centet's periphery. For small merchants especially, the home improvement park offers a way to get in on the shopping center action.

Reid's idea is to take a parcel of land, approximately l0 acres in size, on the edge of the center's site and subdivide and improve lots for home improvement retailers who would share the advantages of a common site, with parking and maintenance provided. The home improvement park would be tied in architecturally and from a traffic standpoint with the center.

Sites within the park could be sold to individual retailers who would follow the developer's guidelines, or would be developed with design-build leaseback buildings for suitable tenants.

The advantages for the retailer are several, Reid said. The retailer can capitalize on the traffic drawn to the park as a whole, just as a merchant inside the center can. Parking, site, and maintenance facilities are shared by all, reducing the cost below that of a separate site for each store.

A major advantage is that these home improvement parks would be high-quality, aesthetically appealing developments.

HARDWOODS ON TOUR

(Continued from page I3) of clear grades has diminished substantially in recent years. This is due in part to an abnormally high volume of exports of clear grades. Another important factor is that virgin forests have largely been exhausted. Trees used nowadays as a source of good furniture wood are generally second or third growth timber. This by nature, and as a result of shorter management rotations, contains more character marks.

"But these character marks-bird pecks, knots, mineral spots, pin worm holes and the like-are not really defects although they are called that in the technical jargon. They are what nature has put there. They have no adverse effect whatsoever on the performance or durability of the wood."

The exhibit derives its name, Selectorama Showroom. from an Association publication, Fine Hardwoods Selectorama, a leading authoritative reference on hardwood uses and characteristics. In its recently published new edition the book describes more than 300 species and contains 155 full

Among the pieces in the exhibit are two walnut chests identical in design and dimension-one of character marked walnut and the other of clear walnut. Other furniture pieces on display are two large 4-drawer chests, one in knotty oak, the other in character marked walnut;a table in knotty ash; a love seat in wormy maple and a floor lamp in the same wood; and a lingerie chest in gummy cherry.

The 40 plywood panels are on two carousels containing 20 panels each. Ten species are represented and there are four panels of each. One panel of each species is unfinished while three identical panels are finished in three different currently popular color tones ranging from ligllt brown to deep brown.

Character marked woods represented are red and white oak, pecan, walnut, cherry, ash, elm, mahogany and other fine hardwoods.

must be paid for60-90 daysbefore it is ready to sell. A scarcity during a sellers market makes carload purchasing much more difficult than carload selling. 814 oak air dried to 30% takes a slow 14-20 days in the kiln to protect against honeycomb. All of these time factors add cost.

(3) Dry storage means higher class

buildings and sheds.

(4) Also adding to costs are downgrade which occurs during the kiln drying process due to checks, honeycomb, twisting, cupping, crooks and bowing. Proper sticking and drying prevents some of this downgrade.

AvailabilityFrom the numerous calls received by hardwood wholesalers in the area regarding purchase of small orders of hardwood, it is clear that more retail yards should learn about and stock some basic hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, birch and ash. Pick one person in the yard to make a personal visit to your wholesaler. Ask him to show you hardwood and discuss the handling, measuring and stocking ofthem for retail sale. It can bring both satisfaction of supplying a need for your customer and added orofit.

MERCHANDISING EXOTIC HARDWOODS

100 feet in 8/4. Fivequarter stock is resawn and sold 3/8" thick.

Welty reports that short lengths of Hawaiian koa are his best sellers among the exotics. These pieces are priced individually.

A more specialized means for merchandising exotics has been developed by a crafts shop in Covina, a suburb northeast of Los Angeles. Paul Loomis of Paul's Hardwood and Stained Glass pushes exotic woods for framing stained glass. From his small inventory of exotics, some of which is priced per lineal inch, he also sells to wood carvers and jewelry makers.

Loomis also stocks exotics such as rosewood, zebrawood and elm burl in

membrane-backe d Pliantwood veneers. "Exotics are not a great part of the dollar volume here," he explains, "but I wouldn't give them up."

Exotic wood dealers all mention that their woods must be freshly surfaced so that customers can see their bright colors. Often inventories of exotic woods need resurfacing or sanding after they have been displayed for several months.

clear lumber that has been well manufactured. A new dealer should initially invest in these, according to experienced dealers.

When a dealer re-manufacturers exotics into small blocks remnants naturally develop. These remnants can be sold by weight from a well-marked remnant bin near the regular exotic display, according to experienced dealers. The price per pound should be clearly marked on the bin and a scale hung above or beside it.

Dealers also mentioned the difficultv of merch'andising cocobola and ebony, two exotics that are sawn fiom particularly small logs into boards that are neither edged nor trimmed. These woods often contain defects in the center and wane on the edges.

Other exotics, such as zebrawood, purpleheart, padauk and bubinga are more easily merchandised, however, because they are available in wide,

RARE II decisions must also consider the recreational needs of 200 million Americans. Those include forest roads providing easy family access to developed campsites. A legal designation for Wilderness would not allow either, he noted.

"Another reason why RARE II decisions are consumer issues," Whiting said.

"To make it an issue that pits the industry against the environment is not only counter to the facts, it is misleading and unfair to the American people as a whole."

WWPA members operate some 220 sawmills in the western U. S. which produce about 7.5 billion board feet annually. That is about a quarter of all softwood lumber manufactured in this country.

The association concluded its sessions with committee reoorts on quality standards. lumber teihnology, economics, transportation, marketing, export and occupational safety and health.
