Lead, follow or lookout

This election season we're hearing lots of talk about leadership for America. For any business, this elusive quality called leadership is an equally important asset.

Leadership involves many areas. Professor Leonard L. Berry, witing for Arthur Andersen & Co., observes that "We have a poverty of leadership in retailing today - just as we do in all other major industries and sectors of society. The qualities of leadership... love of the business, a core vision, innovativeness, a passion for excellence, integrity... are too often absent in the people running retail companies, and thus in the companies themselves."

Enthusiasm especially seems in short supply. How often do we encounter leaders who are sparkling and excited each morning about the challenges and opportunities of the day? Some are

and it is fascinating to observe. Yet too many just grind it out - another day, another dollar. Call the latter negative leadenhip.

Unless a person in a leadership capacity is born with a love of retailing in his or her blood, maintaining enthusiasm can be a daunting task. In the brutal world of retail, disappointments and nasty surprises come all too often. Maintaining the magic can be tough. Yet it is just those kinds of qualities that separate the true leader from the pack. Some of this falls under the heading of "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

Leaders come in all kinds, shapes and types. Firm rules do not always apply. While leadership may be difficult or perhaps impossible to define precisely, when you are in its presence or feel its effect from a competitor, you know what it is.

Selling decorative paneling advantage

lJANDSOME, elegant traditional, rI modern, witnn, cozy, invitingthe interior design effect your customer wants to achieve is available in either solid wood panels or decorative paneling.

Redwood paneling, appropriate for both walls and ceilings, can be applied vertically, horizontally or diagonally for ultimate interest. Color can be controlled by choosing all cinnamon red colored heartwood or a combination of heartwood streaked with sun colored sapwood. Textures are smooth in surfaced lumber or rough in saw textured. Finishes, oils, stains, sealers and even paint can be used to protect or enhance the completed project.

Because a homeowner can apply redwood boards as easily as a professional, paneling works well for remodeling and renovation. Individual redwood boards come 4, 6 or 8 inches wide. They are light and easy to install with hand tools, adhesives and nails. Some individuals claim panel projects are as easy to do as wallpapering.

Western red cedar paneling offers a variety of warm, natural colors ranging from rich amber to deep honey brown. Available in a wide choice of pattems, textures and grades, it also has good working properties and is easy to install. Finishing is optional and because of its dimensional stability, cedar is an excellent recommendation for areas with high humidity levels such as baths and kitchens.

Southern cypress planks have all the advantages of redwood and cedar plus the option of using pecky cypress with its unusual character. Hardwoods also are beautiful wall coverings. Oak is the most popular followed by mahogany, walnut and cherry. Southern pine and western woods such as larch and spruce also can be used effectively as interior paneling. Although less commonly seen, they are easy to handle and attractive.

All types of paneling are appropriate for both new construction and remodeling. The application of paneling can blend the newness of an addition with the original structure. Paneling also can hide cracked plaster or uneven walls in a renovation. Suggest paneling, whether your customer is redecorating, remodeling or building a mansion or a cottage. You'll undoubtedly create both a sale and a satisfied customer.

Ways to increase panel sales

ETAILERS can develop additional panel sales by marketing to specialized uses such as material handling, agricultural or boat building. D-i-yers also can be profitable customers for panels.

Sanded plywood is widely used for a number of material handling applications, including pallets, slave pallets, pallet bins and tanks, liquid tanks, crating, shelving and cable reels. Because Oe smooth surface prevents damage to soft fruits and vegetables, it is an excellent product for produce bins.

The Big Bin designed by the American Plywood Association is becoming increasingly popular for agricultural use. Tropicana, Minute Maid and Citrus World, all located in Florida, use over 140,000 Big Bins with an estimated 34 million square feet (3/8 inch basis) of structural panels. Each Big Bin uses approximately 250 sq. ft., according to APA field representative Jack Gianni.

A pear grower in Medford, Or., has replaced all his plastic bins with 47" x 47" x 24" structural panel bins. He likes the lower cost of $40-$60 each, their ability to stack nine high in cold storage and controlled atmosphere rooms and that they are repairable, Mike Drobaugh, APA rep in that area, noted.

B-B Plyform is made only by APA members especially for concrete formwork applications. It is reusable and available in Class I, which is stronger and stiffer, and Class IL While this product has advantages, any grade of exterior sanded plywood can be sold for concrete formwork.

D-i-yers use plywood panels for everything from garage shelves to furniture and outdoor storage buildings. Two projects featued recently in consumer magazines could give your customers some ideas.

The August Outdoor Zrp showed a 140 sq. ft. hunting cabin that can be built for $1,000 or less using a variety of APA panels. Providing basic shelter for up to four people, it can be used as a permanent or temporary cabin in the woods or backyard. A project

featured in Better Homcs & Gardens magazine's summer bed and bath spe- cial issue used Medium Density Overlay plywood to build a wall mounted headboard.

In addition, sanded plywood can be sold for cabinets and built-ins, shelving, paneling and accent panels as well as soffits, stair feads and risers and underlayrtent for floor coverings and floor or roof deck coatings. It can be easily stained and is often used in d-i-y furniture projects. Other typical do-it-yourself applications include workbenches, tool and toy boxes, desks and tables, furniture of all kinds, outdoor storage buildings, patio shelters, fences and countless

home repair and maintenance projects. The uses for which it can be recommended are limited only by the imagination and woodworking skills of the customer.

Sanded plywood has a finish quality surface which requires little or no additional sanding for most applications. It can be cut, drilled, routed, jointed, glued, fastened and finished with ordinary tools and basic skills. The wood has excellent nail holding ability and nails can be placed near the edges without splitting the panel.

Standard dimensions are 48" x 96" although some longer and wider panels are available.

A special marine grade sanded panel is designed with Douglas fir or western larch for uses requiring resistance to the elements and srucftml integrity. It is well suited for boat hulls and other applications where bending is involved. Since it is usually special ordered, a rerailer can develop a good niche market with it if there are boat builders on hobbyists in his area.

Being aware of opportunities to sell panels to customers other than builders or remodelers can pay off in additional sales.

Structural panel supply favorable...southern pine ply- wood fills gap left by fir shortages....APA projects incrgased use.

;\PTIMISM abounds in the Vstructural panel market as late summer demand for sheathing and underlayment firmed sales at both contractor and d-i-y yards.

Prices continued to rise and supply remained favorable as the South picked up the slack in production and southern pine plywood began to find

its way into areas nomrally served by fir plywood. OSB held steady as a contender although its price also was moving up.

The strength of the August market "points toward a late developing market that has underlying strengths," C.C. Crow Publications said in its weekly newsletter. "Thag at least, can be seen as a sign of hope in what has been a dull second half'

Because of a better fiber supply, lower labor costs and access to major markets, the South is becoming the primary producer of sfructural panels. In 1991, 68 southern mills produced 13,597,000 square feet, 567o of total U.S. production. In the West, the coastal region produced 5,114,000 square feet (21.1Vo) and the inland region produced 2,473,W square feet

(l0.2%o). OSB accounted for 23Vo with 28 mills. APA estimates that this will increase to257o by 1996.

Total residential construction including remodeling is expected to use 13.2 billion feet of sructural panels this year, the American Plywood Association projects. By 1995, the market should reach 15.4 billion feet. Although fewer homes are being built than in the 1980s, increased square footage and a reasonably good single family market are requiring more panel products. Single family homes are using 8,400 sq. ft. of panels on average with a multifamily unit requiring 3,155 sq. ft.

The volume of structural panels per home can be increased by selling the APA Code Plus Home program for contractors. The combination of thicker panels and use of structural panel wall sheathing can raise the average structural panel use per home to over 10,000 sq. ft. APA is in the midst of developing plans for the 1993 promotion of Code Plus with point of purchase displays for retailers and seminars which retailers can sponsor in conjunction with contractor nights or special events.

Retailers can sell the Code Plus program's advantage of ensuring earthquake and wind resistant homes. Wood frame construction performed well in both the 1989 San Francisco, Ca., earthquake and 1989's Hurricane Hugo on the eastern seaboard. Franklin l,ew, seismic safety manager for the city and county of San Francisco, said, "Wood frame buildings designed to provide lateral resistance are less likely to sway and drift in an earthquake. This limits breakage of electrical, gas and water lines within the building, thus reducing the chance for catastrophic fires." The Code Plus Home program applies nearly 40 years

STRUCTURAL panels are havino a oood selling season. APA forecasts that 1-9.2 billion feel will be used this year.

Customer Confusion?

Selling plywood used to be pretty simple. If your memory is long enough, you probably recall that ll4, ll2 and 314-inch thicknesses covered your sanded softwood and hardwood plywood inventory with some 3/8 and 5/8inch rough sheathing to handle sidewall and subfloor construction. Things have changed.

Today your plywood panels are sbaring bin space with OSB, particleboard and, perhaps, medium density fiberboard products. Panels now come in mind numbing thicknesses like 7ll6-inch and 23132inch.

"Ibr hearing from more confused and frustrated customers, both homeowners and professionals," says Bill Rooney, bost of the weekly d-iy call-in radio show "Around the House with Bill Rooney" on station KXL, Portland, Or. "They buy a project plan for a simple bookcase calling for 314-inch sides and a l/ulinch back. However, when they start assembling the bookcase, the thicker panel is 11/16-inch and the thinner is 3/16-inch or 4mm and all their dimensions are off. One d-iyer complained tbat he spent more time with calipers in hand than a hammer or saw."

"And even the professionals aren't always sure what they are buying. I continue to see dealer newspaper ads featuring special prices on'Waferboard' or'Waferwood'panels yet, as far as I know, only oriented strand board is produced today by domestic manufachrers,. he said.

So how does the retailer regain customer confidence? Management must make sure its sales staff, invoices, bin markers and advertising list accurately the actual product size and description they are selling. A credibility check is tbe only answer to eliminating customer confusion.

important that OSB products are made from plentiful, noncontroversial timber sources including hardwoods such as aspen. Access to these raw materials has brought OSB plants to areas such as wisconsin.

"Retailers can save money for their customers and come in with a low bid," advises Mel Williams, lumber deparrnent salesman at Boise Cascade in Phoenix, Az. "OSB products perfonn the same as rated plywood panel products." They have the same performance ratings without voids or knots and are uniform. Their stiffuess can be an advantage although the extra weight in some thicknesses bothers a few people, he adds.

Educating the builders is essential, according to Butch Miller, sales manager at Martco OSB, Alexandria, La. Builders should know there are "things you can do and shouldn't do" with OSB, he explains. "A retailer can get a leg up with his builder customers by showing them the APA film on panel installation."

Martco, which sells Tuff Srand in a market area reaching from Alabama to Arizona with an emphasis on Texas and some customers in California, Georgia and Florida, packages the products with complete instructions plus an 800 number to call for additional help.

Education is also stressed by Jim Harrison, operations flumager at Georgia-Pacific's San Leandro, Ca., distribution center. He recommends that dealers get to know the OSB products better and develop an easier-to-sell niche market. He also stresses the advantages of being able to give a customer a lower price on a bid if he is familiar with OSB and what it can do. Harison suggests that dealers should stock OSB as well as plywood panels to familiarize customers with the product. He's another advocate of APA and manufacturers'films and literature.

of APA research in earthquake and wind resistant design.

Oriented strand board products have captured a significant portion of the structural panel market in the past 10 years. Price has always been an advantage for OSB, although the spread between plywood and OSB costs is now minimal. With the current climate of preservation, it is

Louisiana-Pacific, which has 16 OSB plants with a total capacity of about 3 billion square feet a year, is a good example of a manufacturer who backs a dealer with quantities of informative information. They offer an OSB print advertising kit, brochures, counter cards and envelope stuffers for dealers selling Inner-Seal products.

Regardless of whether he is selling traditional veneer type structural panels or the OSB products, a dealer should be able to count on completing the year with relatively strong sales.

September 1992
COUNTER displays such as lhis attract attenlion of builder customers and provide them with informative brochures on OSB. SIDING is one of the many OSB products sellling well to both contraclors and remodelers. Its lower price is attractive.

OPTICAL.SCANNER

Barcode 'scanners save time & money

S MORE buying groups use barcodes for a larger number of products, you can save time and money and gain increased efficiency and speed from barcode scanning.

As you probably know, there are a number of different types of scanners including handheld laser scanners, CCD scanners and wands. Or, you can choose a counter mounted projection scanner or a scanner designed to be mounted inside a counter top. The latter is not widely used except in grocery checkout counters. To help you choose the scanner which best fits your needs, some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type arc listed below.

HANDIIELD LASER SCANNER - One of the most highly recommended, it provides unsurpassed first read rates, accuracy, speed and the ability to point and shoot. Typical scanning distance is from 2-18 inches.

Advantages: does not require contact with barcode label; moving beam eliminates hand motion; simplifies reading barcodes on curved or irregular surfaces; excellent depth of field; solid state laser diode is reliable and rugged.

Disadvantages: more expensive than other types of input devices; electro-mechanical device with moving parts.

HANDHELD CCD SCANNER - In contrast to wands and lasers, it actually photographs tle barcode, provides a fast scan rate with maximum scanning distance approximately 1 inch with a maximum label width of 2.3 inches.

Advantages: does not require contact with barcode label; extremely fast read; rugged and durable with no moving pafis.

S"tory at a Glane

How

Disadvantages: fixed scanning width; limited depth of field.

WAND - Handheld mo wand has a ball tip which glides across a barcode label to provide high first read rates even with a poorly printed or faded label.

Advantages: least expensive type of input device; extremely high read rate; reads both dot mafrix and laser printed barcodes.

Disadvantages: requires contact with barcode label; great difficulty in reading barcodes on irregular surfaces.

PROJECTION LASER SCANNER - The second most highly recommended, it is an ideal choice for applications requiring high volume barcode scanning with limited counter space. Designed to mount on top of the counter, it is compact in size and projects a dense pattern of beams at different angles, making it very easy to scan barcodes.

Advantages: does not require contact with barcode label; hands free projection scanning; simplifies reading barcodes on curved or irregular surfaces; excellent depth of field; requires very little counter space.

Disadvantages: more expensive than other scanning devices; electro-mechanical device with moving parts.

COUNTER TOP LASER SCANNER - Used mainly in supermarket checkouts, it requires a mounting hole to be cut in the counter top.

Advantages: hands free projection scanning; simplifies reading barcodes on curved or irregular surfaces.

Disadvantages: more expensive than other scanning devices; electro-mechanical device with moving parts; requires mounting hole to be cut in colmter top.

When you choose the scanner best suited for your type ofbusiness, barcode scanning, along with a good inventory control, financial management computer system, can provide you with the necessary tools to increase your profits while improving your customer service.

E) UILD a positive relationship bePween vour sales staff and customers by suggesting the proper type of fasteners for power-driven installations of plywood siding, floor sheathing and underlayment and then being able to solve and prevent potential problems.

Years ago, the American Plywood Association recommended only handdriven stainless steel nails and hotdipped or hot-tumbled galvanized nails for installing plywood siding. Most commonly available types had only a thin protective coating or plating, which resulted in a sinilarly low resistance to rusting and eventual staining of the siding when exposed to weather.

But in recent years, manufacturers of power-driven fasteners have improved the plating processes to increase their fasteners' resistance to rusting and staining. APA now recommends power-driven fasteners as an acceptable substitute for handdriven fasteners, provided they are of equivalent size and quality.

Suggested are:

o Aluminum nails.

o Galvanized stainless steel nails (chromate-coated for added corrosion prot€ction).

o High quality aluminum-plated stainless steel staples (the quality of the plating is important).

Story at a Glance

Help your customers make the right connections when installing plywood with power nailers and staplers... tips tor making and keeping happy customers.

Power-driven fasteners for plywood installations

can cause problems with fastener "pops," or squeaks when fastening floor sheathing or underlayment. Normally the operator, himself, can provide the force required to eliminate gaps beneath undedayment or floor sheathing by standing on the panel adjacent to where the fastener is being driven.

Since material densities vary, it's impossible to find an air pressure setting that will consistently drive the fasteners flush.

Galvanized fasteners should be protected with a chromate coating to increase their staining resistance.

Additional cautions for those using power-driven fasteners:

1. Contact. Occasionally, the light weight, high velocity fastening equipment doesn't provide sufficient force against the panel to ensure that the sheet is tight against the framing. This

2. Thin Galvanizing. Power-driven fasteners must be smooth and unifonn in diameter to avoid jamming the nailer or s0apler's ieed mechanism. Conventional electro-galvanizing, which provides the required smoothness, is often too thin to provide longterm corrosion resistrnce. When high corrosion resistance is needed, suggest fasteners of a material that does not corrode, such as aluminum or stainless steel.

3. Overdriving. The typical power nailer or stapler used today for building construction often countersinks the fastener. Adjusting the air pressure is an unpredictable method for controlling how deep the fastener is driven.

The solution to overdriving is to have the driver in the nailer or stapler modified or ground off so that it can only drive the fasteners flush. Once this is done, it's only necessary to adjust the air pressure sufficiently high enough to drive the fastener in the densest materials. In material of lower density, they'll still be driven flush. Manufacturers of various pneumatic guns say they approve of grinding off the driver, but they srongly urge that one of their repairmen do this so that the driver is ground offproperly.

ANAGEMENT is the title; leadership is the function. The title comes by appointment; the power from one's actions.

Ability to act effectively is not in' born, but acquired. It's learnable and doable. Unfortunately twrutger can be a destination while leadership is a

In our careers many of us have called in our star salesman on Friday afternoon to make him Sales Manager come Monday morning. Why not?

Training managers is not an exercise covered by reading position descriptions, operations manuals and listening to sales reps describe their wares. Creating leadership begins with understanding the target you're rying ro hir.

Byron Nelson, a Texas native and a highly revered touring golf professional ofthe 1940s, described golfas a simple game. He explained it as having only two dimensions * distance and direction. Tbis is simplistic, but true. Business like golf has two dimensions - people and assets.

This translates that managers must obtain people skills and site lnowledge. Thereforg rurnagement training must have Oese as its objectives. Most companies do their best trainlng and spend the most money on the siE tnowledge (asset ) side. Albeit mostly through on thejob training.

The people skills side rides on what the boss says instead of what s right or best. Over tbe years the academicians have quantified manageriaVleadership skills from entry level to manager of managers. One enters the work force with some formal schooling. The ability to communicate represents about l07o of. the skills the worker will need to rcquire to be an effective and contributing employee. Mostly the beginner adds site knowledge: how to use this machine or sell that product Being able to communicate (people ikills) makes it possible o acquire asset skills.

The next step is the supervisor level. Here the experts say a 50-50 split and realignment in skills is required. The person must develop all sorts of abilities with people communication, implementation, delegation, teaching and monitoring and at the same time continue to grow in the assets utilization area.

From supervisor, the next step is nanager. At this level even broader peopte skills are needed. Thejob becomes 807o people management and 207o asset management. Management changes from supervisor/coach to manager/oounselor, and generally acquires financial responsibilities. Experts define a manager as one doing the job with someone else's money.

The old saying that the only room

How

How to get paperwork organized

VERY industry trainer has at least the one seminar on (1) Meet and beat competition; (2) How to survive in

today's rough and tough competitive arena; (3) How the small or mid-size home center/lumber yard must change strategies to accomplish (l) and (2).

I'm going to give you a different strategy, one I have developed over the years. It works in every retail field, but is most effective in our industry which demands a higher level of customer contact by very knowledgeable, motivated people.

The first and most important part of the strategic plan is to get "your a-- out on the floor/yard for 80-90% of your working day." That's where it allhangs out. Don't tell me it is impossible. It's simple when you use my system to get out from under the paper that bogs you down.

First get 43 file folders and eight hanging folders for your desk file. Next number 31, I through 31, and label 12 January through December. Divide the 3 I files between six hangers: 1-5, 6-10,

Story at a Glane

and at least 30 hotel pens.) This middle drawer becomes a work station. Fill it with what you will use each day: blank pads, three or four pens, paper clips, stapler. Throw out the rest of the junk.

The fourth step is to activate your filing system so it will work every day. Let's assume you select Monday, Aug. 10, as the day to start. Move the hanging folder with files I -5 to the back just in front of the empty hanging folder. This puts files 6-10 in front. Move 6-9 files to the empty hanger, leaving 10 in front. Move January through August behind December. Seal the files representing weekends for the remainder of the month with paper clips.

Now the fun begins. You will need three or four trash cans. Go through the stacks of papers, one paper at a time. Decide to throw it out or work on it. Immediately assign papers you keep to a specific day in the remainder of August or to a month file.

lL-15, 16-20,2L-25,25-3L Place in file drawer with low number in front. Hang the seventh empty and the eighth with the month files behind them. Next take every piece of paper cluttering your office and desk and stack them on the floor beside your desk. (When I started this system, I had four stacks reaching to the top of my desk. Thethirdstep isto empty the middle desk drawer, the one where you throw cards, receipts, clip pens and otherjunk. (This blew my mind. I found receipts I could have deducted for tax pu4)oses, cards from people I met 10 years ago

When you get to the bottom of the stack(s), everything will have been discarded orplaced in a file. You will have nothing on your deskexcept a calendar for quick notes and a telephone. You may have a photo of yourfamily onthe credenza, but nothing else. No "in" baskets and no "out" baskets.

There won't be a piece of paper in sight when you come in on Monday. You will pull out file 10. That's today's work. [t is rare when a person using this system finds more than 10 items to work on. Set priorities and get started. When the mail arrives, put it right in the middle of your desk and follow the routine of trashing it or filing it in the day or month you will tackle the project.

At the end of the day, put file 10 behind 9 and move the empty hanging folder behind the numbered files. This puts 11-15 in front. File 11 is the next day's work. At the end of each day move the empty number file to the hanging folder at the back. At the end of the week move the empty hanging folder to the rear. When the month ends, transfer the contents of the next month file to the 31 day files. Clip closed weekends or days not to be used if the month is short. Put the month file at the back of its hanging folder. Always move files to the back, keeping the empty hanging file between the day and month files to maintain perpetual rotation.

Although the system may sound confusing, it becomes simple as you work with it. The time you save canbe well spent on the sales floor or in the yard. Try it. It works for me.

Shaken Reopen After Quake

Though smaller quakes continue to rock the Yucca Valley, Ca., area, local home centers are back on their feet after being turned upside down by a 7.1 magnitude temblor.

Residents remain nervous as lower intensity jolts have struck every day since the initial June 28 shaker (see Thc Merchanl, July p.44). More than 11,000 aftershocks have been recorded.

Builders Emporium closed for two weeks, but kept full staffs working on clean up, paperwork and answering the telephone. Steel columns were added to the building as a safety precaution. Clean up was complicated by spills in the paint department which had to be treated as hazardous waste.

Yucca Valley Lumber & Hardware has yet to fully repair extensive damages to its warehouse, door shop and home center, where the ceiling fell in, gondolas split in two, machinery overtumed and crushed jambs made doors inoperable. But the company reopened the day after the big quake, serving customers at the door.

Bob's Economy Building Center reopened the day after the quake, despite few customers since the main road was closed for a week. They also conducted business at the door.

WESlIERN ASS0ClAll[0N NEWS

Lumber Merchants Associatlon of Northern Callfornia's president Larry McFadden, discussing recent Forest Service decisions, said, "One can safely state that preservationists assassinated Smokey Bear and discredited the professional manager with the result of politicizing all foreshy decisions."

"Despite the decision to move forward with 'kinder, gentler' foreshy methods that will, in effect, reduce (if not eliminate) clear cutting in National Forests, and provide for a more visually pleasing and diverse vegetative appearance on a forestwide basis, one could feel the frusbation of the forest rangers in the field with their lack of authority to manage the forests," he added.

"The result of the Forest Service's action will result in more pressure on private timber lands in the western U.S. It will nearly eliminate timber sales on federal

land and it will increase timber prices in our region," McFadden said. "Given the stranglebold that the private sector will have on the market, perhaps we sbould invest our stock and get out of the lumber business since it's doubtful if they will have'kinder, gentler' prices! "

Writing in the association's newsletter following a five-day tour of Pacific Northwest fo[ests, he concluded, "It was my impression that the supply is limitless, but it's becoming increasingly concenhated into fewer hands."

Western Bulldlng Materlal Assoclatlon is reminding members the Anericans with Disabilities Act employment-related provisions took effect July 26 affecting all businesses employing 25 or more people. A company cannot discriminate against

anyone who can perform the "essential functions" of a job. Further, the act calls upon employers to make a "reasonable accommodation" for a worker's disability, provided that it does not cause the business "undue hardship."

The association suggests employers trying to make tbeir workplaces physically accommodating to people with disabilities consult a disabled individual, especially a company employee. They recommend asking the person to go through the facility to identify problem areas and make recommendations.

Since wheelchair accessibility or easy maneuverability is a consideration, the association suggests: curb cuts with ramps in sidewalks and at enkances; wider doors; designated parking spaces close to entrances; low pile carpeting; roomy toilet stalls with grab bars and raised seats.

Workers and applicants with mental illnesses and emotional problems, recovered drug and alcohol abusers and people recovering fiom a variety of physical problems are also covered by the act. Accommodation for these individuals is likely to relate more to the task itself than to architecture or furnishings, the association notes. However accommodating tbe hearing or vision impaired may require structural or mechanical changes such as flashing alarm lights as well as bells/buzzers to signal emergencies or Braille indications at stairways, room doorways and in elevators.

WesternLumberProduction Off

Sawmills in the 12 western states produced 19.075 billion board feet in 1991,9.9Vo lower than the previous year and the lowest annual volume since 1985, according to the Western Wood Products Association.

1991 Lumber Production By State

The West provided 4l7o of the lumber used in the U.S. in 1991. Southern mills supplied 29Vo and imports (nearly all from Canada) represented 28Vo of the lumber used.

A slow economy, anemic housing demand and further reductions in timber supply affected western lumber production levels. Housing starts in 1991 totaled just 1.01 million units, the slowest home construction year in neady four decades.

At the end of 1991, there were 536 lumber mills operating in the l2-state region, compared to 600 a year earlier. Of the 64 lumber mills closed during 1991, nearly half were located in Oregon, Washington and California, where timber sales from federal lands have been halted by preservationist lawsuits and harvest restrictions to protect the spotted owl.

The number of lumber mills operating in the West has declined 247o sincn, 1987, when western lumber production hit an all-time high of 23.932 billion board feet.

Industry employment (including plywood and logging) in the West shrank to 190,894 in 1991, a decline of l2.5Vo from 218,147 in 1990.

More Manufacturers Are Cherry Pickers

Oregon remained the top lumber producing state: 6.595 billion board feet manufactured at an estimated wholesale value of $1.962 billion. California was second with 4.218 billion board feet valued at $1.932 billion, followed by Washington's 3.82 billion board feet valued at $1.071 bilton. Mills in the tbree states producedTTVo of western region lumber.

Use of cherry in manufacturing furniture is on the rise, based on hardwood wall units displayed at a recent San Francisco, Ca., furniture market.

Northwest Hardwoods tabulated l3.l%o of the units used cherry, up from six months earlier's 9.87o. Red and white oak slipped from 36.4Vo to 34.tVo and ash and elm from 2.5Vo to I.lVo. Pine increased from 10.87o to llVo, alder ftonr 3.9Vo to 4.9Vo, and maple and birch from 1.87o to 4.4Vo.

Wildfires Tear Through Timberlands, Homes

Hard driving winds and 90" temperatures kindled a flurry of devastating, out-of-control forest fires in drought-stricken areas of California, scorching tens ofthousands ofacres of timberland.

The worst of tle late August blazes was the 64,000 acre Fountain fre, one of the 10 largest fires ever to strike the state. It bumed for over a week northeast of Redding, Ca., evacuating towns from Burney down to Bella Vista and consuming an estimated 600 million feet of timber. Arson is suspected.

Big Valley Lumber Co., Bieber, Ca., lost about 200,000 logs at its Burney mill when a log deck caught fire. "We took a loader and pulled off the burning logs," said Don Porter. "We would have lost the whole operation if we didn't have anybody there."

Although Intermountain Supply, Burney, lost two days of business when the town was evacuated, they fortunately didn't lose their business. "The wind changed and the fire went

around us," sighed a spokesman.

The fire was a mixed blessing for about 300 millworkers at Roseburg Forest Products, Anderson, Ca., who expected the two mills to close this month. Though tle company lost 26,000 acres in the Foutain fire, the mills will stay open indefinitely to process the burned timber, enough to build 50,000 houses.

The fire crept within yards of Sierra Pacific Industries' Burney mill, as employees manned fire lines around the plant. The company lost only one shift in production, but several workers lost their homes tro the fres.

In El Dorado County, WetselOviatt Lumber Co., Folsom, Ca., lost about 800 acres of private timberland in the Farnum fre.

At least 10 other serious brush fres broke out in California during the same final week of August, including the 6,400 acre Barker fire in Trinity County, the 9,000 acre Rainbow fire in the Inyo National Forest and the 18,000 acre Old Gulch blaze in Calaveras County. In Idaho, the 257.000 acre Foothills fire near Boise reportedly consumed the state's oldest ponderosa pine.

Wounded Depot Guard Sues

An armored car guard wounded during a robbery at Home Depot, Van Nuys, Ca., has filed suit against the chain following a similar robbery during which a guard was killed.

The suit alleges Gregory Alaimo was shot in the hand and permanently disabled during a March 23, 1990, robbery partly due to a Depot policy forbidding security from unholstering their weapons while inside a store. Other times couriers draw their guns and hold them at their sides while under perceived dangerous conditions, the suit says.

His suit was dismissed earlier on the grounds that he accepted the risk of being shot when he took the job. But, according to The Los Angeles Times, Alaimo says he is appealing because of the policy. "If I had my gun ouL the robber would have had second thoughts," Alaimo said. "I have been saying from the beginning, \Mhat's it going to take, someone getting killed?' Now that has happened."

Alaimo's partner on the day he was shot was Edwin Maldonado, the guard killed by robbers July 20 at the San Fernando, Ca., store. Home Depot says the guard would have been killed despite any change in policy.

Fullner Lumber Co. officials were on hand at the Port of Grays Harbor, Aberdeen, Wa., when the company's first lumber shipment, approximately 90,000 feet, arrived from Russia on Iuly 23.

Ted Fullmer, president of the Donald, Or., company, sai4 "It is too early to determine the long terrr benefits of this program, but if we can overcome the logistical and financial hurdles, we see the opportunity for tremendous growth in this area. Russia holds 517o of the world's timber supply and has the potential to develop into a significant supplier. We are honored and excited to assist the development (of lumber trade) between these two countries. Everyone benefits by this relationship. The Russians saw tXe logs, cut the lumber and kiln dry it. The Americans further manufacture the lumber into products they need."

American International Brokerage Corp., Orlando, Fl., imported the lumber after two years of preparation. They expect to bring additional shipments of rough cut Russian lumber to the U.S. Lumber is allowed entry bY the U.S. Department of Agriculture because the kiln drying has the effect of pasteurizing. Cunently, unless logs have been heated to 160' to sterilize the wood, they are difficult to import.

Lighter Woods More Popular

Oak, pine and alder use in furniture is increasing, Arnold B. Curtis, president of Northwest Hardwoods, Portland, Or., noted after the recent San Francisco, Ca, furniture ma*et.

Other trends observed by the Weyerhaeuser Company official include a drop in the use ofburls, cherry and mahogany. Birch, maple, walnut and pecan-hickory use remained similar to that in past markets.

Finishes showed an increase in the light brown, honey tan and bleach gray tones as well as fruitwood.

Beadex's New Office, Plant

Beadex Manufacturing Co. has completed a new 50,000 sq. ft. headquarters building and state of the art plant in Auburn, Wa.

With realignment of nuurufircturing facilities and expansion of its disribution network, the company will concentxate national and international sales and marketing efforts on Tape-

On corner beads and trims, according to president Don King. Beadex facilities at Stockton and Riverside, Ca., have been closed with manufacture and sale of compounds in this market discontinued.

Hamilton Materials has been appointed master distributor of Beadex drywall accessories in California and adjacent sales tenitory. This provides a link with Canadian Gypsum Co., Diunar Gypsum and Synkoloid Co. of Canada through a master distributor group.

Insulation Demand Growing

Demand for thermal insulation will grow 3.2Vo annually through 1996 to $6.4 billion, srengthened by rebounding construction activity.

Fiberglass will comprise over half the total market this year, although foamed plastics will be the fastest growing. The Freedonia Group, Inc. reports that excellent performance qualities, including high R-values, ease of installation and cost competitiveness, will create rapid growth for the latte,r.

Tips For Working With Cypress

Cypress siding should be installed at a moisture content closo to the climate of the area. To obtain this MC, store the lumber under cover, stickered and off the ground in a well ventilated area for a week to 10 days before installing. tf boards get wet, they must be allowed o dry before installation. Siding must be applied only o dry construction material.

Patterns are usually installed vertically, but some may be installed horizontally. Bevel and Williamsburg pattorns are traditionally placed horizontally. For interior use, most patterns can be used in either direction.

Priming or prefinishing of all sides, ends and edges after siding reaches climatic balance and before it is installed will minimize joints opening or buckling because of shrinkage.

Vapor retarders with a pemr rating of 1.0 or less are required on the warm side of exterior walls and on the ground in all crawl spaces or under concrete slabs. Water from the roof must not be allowed to run down side walls of a building with cypress siding and ground should be sloped away from the structure for a minimum of three feet.

Conosion-resistant nails such as double hot dipped galvanized or stainless ste€l arc the best to use. Bluntpoint wmd siding nails reduce splitting. Nails must go through the siding and sheathing and penetrate l-ll2" into the stud.

Finishing should be done prcmptly if the siding has not been primed or pre-finished, following the recommendations of the finish manufacturer. Alkyd primer and two acrylic op coats provide the most durable finish. Transparent and semi-transparent stains usually require frequent maintenance.

Dealers Sell Redwood on TV

Cantwell Brothers Lumber Co', Smithfield, Ut., and Dusty CreekLumber, El Dorado Hills, Ca., are increasing redwood sales with tv advertising based on the California Redwood

Association's 30 second sPot ad, "Dream Deck."

Cantwell usesthefirstpartof "Dream Deck" to introduce a customized ad on cable tv. "The second half of the spot we've produced locally," WaYne Cantwell explains. "We have a young woman, a professional spokesperson, who does a stand-up ona deck and tells the audience about special decking services and products. [t's very effective and blends into the CRA spot smoothly

"We don'taimata solely male audience," Cantwell adds. "We believe female customers are key inbuying decisions, especially for decorative items like decking or paneling. CNN or Lifetime can be just as effective as ESPN for redwood advertising"'

Local broadcast stations and network affiliates can also do customizing. Jack Dolan at DustY Creek said, "The visuals are pretty straightforward, so we just drop out some of the existing audio and drop in our particular message, usually aproduct specialor sale."

Dusty Creek recently experimented by stressing a special price promotion on Penofin deck finishes in an audio dub dropped into the ad. "The results were dramatic," Dolan said. "People

who would never have thought of using a finish were asking for Penofin. The ad generated inquiries and sales. It was marketing at its most effective."

Radiata Pine Plywood

Radiata pine ftom New Zealand is proving successful as a replacement for hard to get western species in plywood manufacturing on the west coast.

At least a half dozen plywood plants have experimented with the wood which usually arrives in log fomr although a small amount of veneer has been imported. Logs being used average 9 to 16 inches in diameter, much the sarne as domestic logs. Problems have been encountered in the veneer drying process and glue bonding, but appear to have been overcome, according to a Random lzngths report.

Radiata pine is not approved under PS-l, the prescriptive product standard, but it is expected to be considered when PS-l is revised in the near future. Industry spokesmen say it will probably be classed as Group II and Group III species, depending upon where it is grown.

One producer has approval to use the performance strndards for ll2" 3ply and 5/8" 4-ply rated sheathing. Another manufacturer has had good results using radiata faces for sanded and siding panels.

One of the biggest problems comes from importing difficulties. Some shipments of radiata pine from New Taaland have been held in port for several months before they were cleared by U.S. Customs and the U.S.

New Fire Retardant Roof Law

California legislation signed by Gov. Pete Wilson requiring fire retardant roofs on new or reroofed homes has the full support of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau.

"As an industry, we have fecognized the need for fire retardant roofing requirements to ensure the safety of homeowners in high fire hazard areas of the state of California formany years," said Michael Westfall, president of the bureau. "This is precisely why we developed the pressure-impregnated, pennanently fire retardant cedar shakes and shingles that meet all state and local fire safety codes."

The new law provides a minimum statewide standard of Class C roofing in California. Shakes and shingles that meet these stringent test standafds are identified by the Certi-Guard label and

Smaller distributors were hit particularly hard in 1991, while industrY leaders produced a return on assets far exceeding a l07o tat get lev el.

Results of a recent survey of National Building Material Distributors Association memben indicate the g/pical distributor earned a return on net

worth of 8.4Vo comPared to 6.8Vo in 1990. One of every four distributors surveyed earned 3l.7%o compared to Zl.lVo last year. Improved employee productivity leading to lower operating expenses and better inventory control were responsible for improved results, according to Profit Planning GrouP, which prepared the report.

late remddeling projects.

Ideal products are those highly desired by homeowners but rarely standard on new homes. Nowadays, they are more functional than luxury items, and easy enough to install by the average do-it-yourselfer. They include:

(1) Storm and screen doors; they add instant security, energy efficiency and curb appeal. Not difficult to install, storm doors are now available in top quality materials, including beveled glass and Italianbrass. And screendoors come vastly improved over the flimsy aluminum models of yesteryear.

(2) Yard and patio lighting offers easy installation, safety, security, cosmetic and outdoor entertainment advantages. Low voltage models are increasingly affordable to purchase and operate; bulbs last from months to years and are easily replaced.

(3) Other security devices are commond-i-y installations, including stateof-the-art full house security and video intercom systems. Quicker projects include adding a heavier duty lockset, deadbolt, kickplate, door/window pin or bar system, wider scope peephole and motion sensor.

(4) Fire safety items, especially smoke alarms, can also be hot sellers. Add fire extinguishers, second story window escape systems, first aid kits.

(t With thebabyboomofthe l990s, an increasing number of homeowners may be looking to childproof their homes. Stock an endcap with devices designed to make homes saferfor small children and keep them out ofcabinets, drawers and fireplaces. Add netting for blocking off doorways and stairways, child resistant outlet covers, caps and pads for covering fumiture comers and other exposed dangers, night lights. Try intercom systems to keep an earon kids from another room. Andersen Corp. has also produced a free hand-out bro-

chure, "Look Out for Kids," full of child safety tips.

(6) With the boom in condominium sales, closet organizers offer homeowners a way to add square footage by better utilizing storage space. Kits can be customized to about any closet's dimensions and configuration, are easily assembled and have expanded in selection from plastic-coated steel to actual hardwood systems.

(7) Garage shelving provides similar advantages and retailers can put together their own kits, combining fasteners, brackets and shelving as a package. Bookshelves can be marketed in the same fashion.

(8) Water conservation products give you an environmentally friendly image. Watersaving showerheads, faucets, toilet devices, garden sprinklers and taps are easy replacement or retrofit projects.

(9) The range of energy saving products is vast, making it difficult to group together such products in one display. It seems as if there are products touting "maximum energy efficiency" in every product category. Nevertheless, information about larger products, such as energy saving water heaters, doors, windows and insulation, can be held in racks near a display for smaller products.

(10) Finally, the Home Improvement Research Institute attests that in tough times like these, with homeowners unable to move or undertake major remodeling projects, purchases focus on decorative and helpful rather than structural improvements. Last year sales of paint, sundries and related supplies were the fastest growing among consumerbought remodeling products.

Fasteners For Gontractors

Adobe Lumber, Petaluma, Ca., does about half of its business with contractors. All need collated nails and staples for pneumatic fastening tools.

To satisfy the demand for different brands, Bruce Palmer, store manager, stocks the All-Specs Interchangeable Fastener Program from Stanley Fastening System. This offers 95 different types of contractor quality fasteners, all made in the U.S., for use with tools from major manufacturers. Cross reference charts quickly identify the fasteners needed for Senco, Paslode, Duo-

Fast. Hitachi and other brands of air-driven nailers and staplers. Distribution is through Stanley-Bostich.

The fasteners are presented in two 4' x 6' gondola displays next to pneumatic nailers and staplers, just a few steps from the contractor office. "After contractors do business in the office," Palmer said, "we invite them onto the floor to see our different product lines. "

Flower Box Brackets

Deck Hands from Home'n Garden secure flower boxes on top of deck railings.

Made of tough, recyclable plastic, the braces fit snugly around the bottom ends of the flower box, while attaching to the railing with the enclosed screws.

Thermoplastic Roof Panels

New thermoplastic roof panels from Eiger Building Products resemble handsplit cedar shakes but can be

molded-in "shakes." Deep-grained texturing and a thick vertical profile give the panels the appearance of rough hewn cedar.

Eigershake panels weigh 80 lbs. per square compared to 800 to 1,000Ibs. for slate, banel and cement tile. This eliminates the need for additional trusses !o hold up the roof and reduces wear on the building. In addition, they have increased hydrolytic stability, resist fungus and mildew, won't rot, withstand temperatures over 190", and maintain mechanical integrity even after repeated heat-and-freeze thaw cycles.

Panels fasten with nails, screws or pneumatic staples and are easy to cut on site with strndard saws. A patented interlock system keeps tlem from moving during installation and locks them together with no seams visible.

Prior Owl Research Spotty

The population of northern spotted owls on newly surveyed timbedands in Mendocino County, Ca., is significantly greater than previous estimates, according to a joint study by the California Department of Fish & Game, Georgia-Pacific and LouisianaPacific.

Biologists attribute the drarnatic increase in the number of documented owl sites to intensified research in the study area rather than an increase in owl population.

The study of 500,000 acres of forestlands from 1989 to 1991 documented 198 individual owls at 103 owl sites - nearly a ten-fold increase over prior estimates. Additionally, 97 nests were located within managed second growth forests, producing a total of 115 young during the three year study.

Spotted Owl Won't Benefit

The government can do nothing to prevent the threatened spotted owl from becoming extinct in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan said as President Bush toured California's Sequoia National Park in an attempt to prove his commitment to the environment. He also joked that the 1992 GOP platform would include a farm plank calling for "More money, higher income, more markets. String all the environmentalists up."

Zeiger Sells Two Utah Firms

After 55 years in the lumber business, Rex Zeiger has sold his interest in Forest Products Sales, Murray, Ut., and Utah Wood Preserving, Woods Cross, Ut., to five company employees.

Buyers are Tom Butterfield, Robert Moore, Sandra Waltimyer, Gordon Watts and Kurt Zeiger. Butterfield will continue as president of both companies, with no curent plans for changes in policy or personnel.

WMMPA Brand Awareness

The Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association has initiated a brand awareness program to identify its members'products.

A stamp on the back of mouldings or on the wrapper or tag will include the WMMPA logo, member's name and "Made in the USA" or "Made in Canada." Other options such as pattern numbers may be included.

Forest Products Week Dates

National Forest Products Week will be celebrated Oct. 18-24 with rhe theme "America's Forests: A CommiEnent to Balance."

"The theme underscores our belief that responsible and productive forest management practices can meet the world's demand for high quality products while also sustaining the quality of the environment," said J. Carter Fox, president and ceo of Chesapeake Corp. and chairman of the American Forest Council, sponsor of the week saluting the benefits of Americas most renewable natural resource.
