Getting it together

T O THOSE WHO worry about the indus-

I try's ability to manage issues and coordinate broad policy questions, the report of the joint Forest Industries Advisory Council and the Forest Industries Council makes good reading.

Unlike the bad old days, when it seemed that the forest products industry lost more battles than we won, it now appears that the movers and shakers really got it together at their meeting earlier this year at Scottsdale, Az.

The membership of the two groups reads like a virtual lltho's l4tho in forest products. The FIAC has been defined as being like a meeting of the industry's shareholders and the FIC as similar to a board of directors.

While there has too often been more planning than action in the past, the new FIC system of "issue coordinators" that has been established would seem one of the best systems yet devised to handle issues, before

they reach crisis proportion. Where problems are industry wide, as in environmental regulation; private, non-industrial forest productivity; public forestland productivity; and solid waste, individual coordinators will be responsible for securing an industry-wide response. If problems are of a more limited scope, one or two associations or even an individual company might deal with the situation.

The FIAC had two overall objectives: (l) to increase understanding of the key universal issues facing the forest products industry and the systems developed to deal with them; and (2) to stress the importance of senior executive involvement in all phases of issue management.

As the battles over this country's resources get tougher and rougher, it is encouraging to see that the top people are taking the steps to plan and, more importantly, to implement those plans to assure that the industry is well set up to protert .ls interests.

New white wood products

tl, HEN PRICES get out of hand UU and product is in short supply, the lumbermen of this country have always responded with typical Yankee ingenuity to solve the problem; new manufacturing techniques, new products from old, adapting existing products to do more things.

Among these innovators is Ed Fountain, president of Ed Fountain Lumber Co. of Los Angeles, who has pioneered products such as Lam-Loc Pecky Cedar, Lam-Loc timbers, a variety of types and sizes of decking, barge shipment techniques plus unique manufacturing and handling methods which have helped deliver better products for less money.

Sfory at a Glance

New pressure-treated white wood products appear on the market. innovative siding costs less than similar redwood, cedar products. initial market testing has brought excellent acceptance.

When western red cedar and redwood prices went through the roof, Fountain began experimenting with white woods for siding. The aim was for a cost savings of up to 400/0.

It was found by pressure treating these woods, their durability and resistance to insect attack was comparable to that of redwood and western red cedar, according to Fountain.

The lumber mellows to a warm brown color and requires no other surface treatment. However, it can be stained using approximately one-third of the material normally required.

Another method is to pre-stain the siding without pressure treating. This too, provides excellent protection, and there is a definite savings in painting or staining on the job site.

To help prevent cupping, which often occurs in white wood. it was found that by scoring the backs that much of this problem could be eliminated. The decision was also made to provide the product in 6" and 8" widths with specified lengths to 20' for additional flexibility and elimination of waste.

To date, Fountain has found excellent acceptance for the white wood siding, Dealers report the product is easy to use, provides a good appearance and contractors appreciate the substantial savings, the company notes.

Energy Conservation Study

A new market study on energy conservation products for the home, using the concept of payback analyses, reports that "storm windows are the most practical alternative, followed by wall insulation, floor insulation, and ceiling insulation. in that order."

The 316-p. study also concludes that the least cost effective approaches, "though unfortunately the least expensive," include weather stripping and caulking to stop air infiltration. The value of this step, however, "depends very much on the quality of house construction in the first place," the study adds.

Market highlights include:

. Insulation market at $990 million in 1978 to increase 270lo through 1980, another llo/o through 1982, whereupon market growth significantly declines to less than 7o/o through 1985.

r Storm door shipments to increase 70lo annually through 1980, then 40lo thereafter to total 6.7 million units by 1985.

o Storm window shipments increase from 32 million units annually in 1978 to 43 million units by 1985.

o Wood and coal-burning stove shipment, including fireplaces, to increase from 600.000 units in 1977 to 700,000* by 1990. "Conversions will account for 90 per cent of the shipments."

According to Frost & Sullivan, Inc., which made the survey, plumbing products that curtail hot water consumption, thereby saving on fuel costs, will undergo significant market growth as advertising and promotion efforts take hold. The potential for water heater insulation kits, for example, amounts to 55 million units cumulatively through 1985.

For shower heads, the potential market totals $800 million over the study time frame. For flow-reducing faucet adapter devices, it can be as much as $450 million.

These overall projections, however, tell only part of the story. Market demographics vary widely by geographic region, type of material used, especially for insulation. and retrofit vs. new construction activity. The net result: F&S says, "Our findings are not as sanguine as are many others." In the case of insulation, for example, most market analyses extrapolate usage standards in the North to the U.S. as a whole.

Similarly, wood and coal-burn-

Become An Energy Authority

EEKING ways to cut rising electric bills and prepare for the heating cost crunch of winter, the homeowner is investigating the advantages and possibilities of insulating, caulking, and weatherstripping, but he is questioning the cost and wants to know how much will be saved and how long it will take to pay back.

Each situation varies, but the retailei can help the consumer to make an intelligent decision by providing basic information on energy costs.

For example, depending on geographical location, heating and cooling is estimated to use up to 650/o of all energy consumed in the home. Heating water takes 130/o to 170/0, lighting 50/o to 100/0, with refrigerator, range, washer, dryer and small appliances accounting for the remainder.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as the utility companies in your area have figures for pay backs on energy cutting improvements and more efficient

home energy use. Obtain these figures from them and use them to guide customers. Wholesalers and manufacturers'reps are able and willing to back you up with statistics.

Dramatize these costs in advertising, displays, seminars and information centers. In addition, suggest proper use of fans to relieve the load on the air conditioner. Display space heaters and humidifiers as solutions to better return on heating dollars. With cut-aways of fireplaces demonstrate increased heat elficiency using proper fitting dampers, heat exchange, and glass doors. Use heat barriers such as window shades and plastic film with statistics pointing out their cost effectiveness.

Feature set-back thermostats. double pane or insulated glass and storm windows as alternative investments in energy saving. Illustrate dollar savings on water heating with flow reduction devices, replacement of worn or leaking faucets, and insulation blankets for water heaters.

Educate your customers on the energy economy of fluorescent lighting and the most efficient use of incandescent bulbs.

Your store can become the local authority on energy savings. Both you and the customer will profit.

The Land of Oz has Heart

worked for Pacific Lumber Co. in San Francisco.

In l95l when Oz got out of the Korean War. he worked with Christian Lumber Co. in San Francisco for 12 years, as lumber handler. lumber clerk and yard foreman.

A man of roots, Oz stayed with lumber, stayed in the Bay Area, and worked 6 years with Indian Valley Lumber Co. in Corta Madera. Ca. (the company no longer exists).

This October Oz marks his l2th anniversary as manager of Interbay Lumber Co. It was started in 1959.

3311Z,.

says Oz Grimes, manager of Interbay Lumber Co., down by the water in Sausalito, across the bay from San Francisco, Ca.

"I'm a local product," says Oz, born 47 years ago in Oakland, Ca. He is a full, cheery, animated, lefthanded Leo, with bright blue eyes, reddish hair and beard, and a green stone earring in one ear. He looks a lot younger than 47 and it is hard to believe he is a grandfather.

Oz comes from a long line of lumber people. Both mother and father, California - born as well.

We talk in the office and it is very neat. There is a Greenpeace poster on the wall for the protection of Harp Seals, and a No Nukes sign in the window.

"My wife and I are heavy into the human potential movement." says Oz as his wife of 22 years, Beth, enters the office. Beth is the company bookkeeper, a post she has held for three years. They are E.S.T. graduates as are their three children, and are also involved with self hypnosis, T.A. (Transactional Analysis)and T.M. (Transcendent al Meditation). Oz feels his "life iust turned aroLrnd" as a result of these involvements.

Oz bursts with enthusiasms: on this day he is a very jolly fellow. "The biggest thing in my life in the

last three weeks is, I joined Marathons. In three weeks I'm standing straighter. I love it! I love it!"

The phone rings, sometimes it's for Oz, sometimes it isn't. Marge, the secretary who shares the oflice with Oz continues her work.

"I'm into The Hunger Project too," says Oz, continuing on the subject of positivism and the

We tour the yards and the sheds. Interbay Lumber is an orderly place. There are no cluttered corners and uncared for areas. There is a feeling of order and space all around the yard, indoors and outdoors.

The kiln dried lumber is in the sheds neatly lined up, and framing lumber and green lumber, is outdoors.

"I have a quality yard," says Oz without hesitation. "Quality and service make up Interbay. My people are nice too."

The redwood comes from northern California," Oz continues, "they need fog, and the Douglas fir comes from Oregon. Virgin timber." All this information is ingrained in Oz and the words flow.

There is a shed with a lumber planer and another shed where lumber is cut to size.

There is a shed with moldings. Some moldings as tall as trees stand up in racks and some lie on their side. There is sanded plywood and plasterboard. The hardware store. a

At coffee break time lift trucks rest and all is quiet for a few minutes as the employees of Interbay, a union shop, get their morning break.

Interbay Lumber Co. is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interbay is a no flash resident serving Sausalito business. "Our business tends toward do it vourselfers and alteration contractbrs."

Oz says.

Are there many women customers Oz is asked.

"I'd like to say yes," he hesitates, "but no."

Interbay Lumber Co. is offering $300 worth of lumber for the nex'[ KQED (San Francisco Educational TV Channel) auction. They gave the lumber for the slide at a nearbv school and gave 2 x 12 redwood to Sequoia Challenge to be used as handrails for their trail through the woods for the disabled and blind.

Oz looks forward to a time to explore his creative side and take an extended vacation.

The consumer credit protection act restricts garnishment to 250/o of disposable earnings or the amount by which those earnings exceed 30 times the minimum wage, whichever amount is smaller. New Small Log Mill

Simpson Timber Company's new Mill Five at Shelton, Wa., is designed to process young growth timber. Logs 4" to 8" in diameter make up the bulk of thc mill's operations.

Mill Five was conceived, computer-planned, built and brought on-line specifically to process the small logs, once considered forest waste and too small to be economically harvested. A constant stream of 2x4s (studs) are turned out with other small dimension lumber.

Equipment in the mill is computer controlled to monitor the mill's vital signs: scanning the length of logs before they reach a seven blade chop off saw which cuts them into 8' blocks, scanning and sorting the blocks into bins, and again scanning the blocks as they are fed into a Chip 'N Saw.

When the $8.7 million sawmill reaches full production, the projection is that the three Simpson mills in the Shelton Working Circle will be able to turn out one million board feet of lumber per day, enough to build 100 homes.

Some 95 new jobs were created with the new mill. This local employment and the harvesting of

young growth timber are both goals of the Shelton Cooperative Sustained Yield. The 10O-vear aqreement between Simpson and the U.S. Forest Service is now in its 33rd year. It provides for coopera- tive management of over 300,000 acres in Mason and Gravs Harbor. Wa. countics.

Forests have been regrowing in the lowland areas since the first trees were cut in the late 1800s. The cycle of new generations of growth and harvest will continue as tree planters follow the loggers to restock the new cutovers.

Roof Tile Plant Opens

Full production capacity is expected to be reached this fall by the recently completed Ceetile, Inc. concrete roof tile plant at Hollister, Ca.

Operating under the direction of John J. McDermott, newly appointed president and c.o.o. of the parent company, Nical, Inc., the plant is in production with shipments begun. John F. Daamen is plant mgr. John E. Noble, merchandise mgr., is responsible for

the technical and product development functions. Tom Paarmann is marketing mgr. with Nical, lnc., the sales force handling the marketing.

Using the Winkelon coloring process from Germany which is new to the United States in con- junction with integral color, the operation produces roof tile in ten colors for residential. commercial. and induslrial use. The product is thermal and sound insulative. and totally incombustible.

Prime Time Meetings

Get the most out of meetings by scheduling them at a prime time and as seldom as possible.

The weekly Monday morning meeting is often rushed, unenthusiastic, and poorly attended. Consider scheduling the session for Wednesday. Handle the work load from Wednesday to Wednesday, originating new projects on that day. Friday's work can continue on Monday, eliminating the effort of starting new work on a day which is normally low in producrivity.

Cut meetings to the bone. Start with one meeting and add to only if necessary.

f nrollment in thc lssocilrtion correspondence courses, Product Knowledgc ancl Selling Skills. is showing ii great increase. Calls lionr dealers asking when the nexl sellirrg skills workshop will be conductecl is a strong indication that dealers have a genuine conccrn. More and more dealers are calling employec meetings on a scheduled basis to add to their sclling skills and product knowledge.

Recent tleld visits have brought comments fronr dealers that a priority must be place d on employee training. We have made an attcmpt to analyzc the reason for this rcnewed interest. It appears that retailers havc a great pressure placed upon them to hold down the runrway prices of merchandise while their costs of operation are increasinB: their nccd to increase wagcs und salaries and employee benefits are also rising. Improving the efficiency of operations is taking place to assist in holding down merchandise prices as contpetition becomes keen.

Another techniquc that retailers have determined to be efl'ective in holding down the price of merchandisc is irrcreasing individual cmploy'ee productivity. Employee pay and benel'its account for a high perccntage of total operating costs. If each enrployee can improve productivity by even 5(1,. company profits will increase and a tighter line can be held on merchandise pricing. A great number of'dealers are now placing emphasis on the return on investment in the employee, just as they have, in the past. placed considerable attention on their ove rall relurn on investment.

During visits to retail operations we have seen the increased return on employ'ee investment by those firms who have been leaders in developing this area. lt did take timc. lt did require sending employees to training seminars. It did requirc giving incentives to employees for contpletion ol correspondence courses. lt did require providing employees with benefits to makc them want to work for the company and to produce, but it did bring results.

The return for all of this investment has been higher sales per employec, a better employee attitude toward the customer, a better company image, and more professionalism in the employee because he has acquired more product knowledge and better selling skills.

This trend of interest in the employee seems to be sweeping through the No. Ca. retail firms. There is no doubt that dealers know whal must be done and have reached the point of doing it to insure that they are in there fighting with the best.

Make Big Jobs Easy

The big job is easy to handle when it becomes a number of small jobs.

First, divide the work into steps with goals which can be reached in short, measured time spans. Then detail each step includine an estimate of the time involved to completd with a deldline date.

If necessary, assign each portion of the job to a different worker.

TREND CONTINUES for lumber produced in the West to stay in the West, as confirmed by statistics for the first half of 1979 (see bar at far right of graph). More than half of all shipments to western markets are carried by truck, but railroads are vital to long-haul lumber shipments east- ward. Lumbermen blame skyrocketing freight rates for choking off shipments to markets east of the Rockies. By steadily increasing costs to western lumber shippers, they say, the railroads have actually driven away more revenue then higher rates have brought in. Nevertheless, railroads are scheduling the fifth rate hike of 1979 alone for October.

Dust Regs Dropped

Efforts by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to develop wood dust criteria for the forest industry are reportedly being abandoned for lack of adequate data.

Although the agency will continue to collect data toward issuing a regulation in keeping with their desire to limit workplace concentrations to a half-milligram of dust per cubic meter, at present all criteria documents are slated for discard in favor of a brief advisory.

A technical information report will be issued to OSHA, according to informed sources.

Wood Preserving: $95O Million

Operators of the nation's wood preserving plants reported value of shipments for the industry of $950 million and employment of 12.3 thousand workers in 1977. according to a preliminary report of the 1977 Census of Manufacturers just issued by the Bureau of the Census. The value of shipments figure, unadjusted for price change, rose 990/o from the 1972 figure of $476 million. Employment rose 90/o from its 1972 figure of ll.3 thousand.

Shipments of treated wood by all manufacturing establishments, including those not classified in this industry were valued at $882 million, an increase of 9lolo over the 1972 shipments value of $461 million. Among the leading products of the industry, poles over l5 feet in length, accounted for $219 million of the total.

Wickes Corp. has initiated a hard-hitting campaign to counteract the economic slow down expected during the remainder of 1979.

E.L. McNeely, chairman and chief executive officer, of the world's largest distributor of building materials, observes, "There's little disagreement that the economic picture is about to worsen. The real question is how are we going to address the problem."

"The goal of our attack is to gain a bigger share of the market," he added. "This applies most significantly to our Lumber Division."

It will aim for a larger market share by offering a broader line of building and home remodeling products, marketing these products aggressively, instituting more com-

Wickes Lumber currently operates 272lumber centers with 1979 sales expected to top $l billion. The division expects to have 400 stores and sales of $2.5 billion by 1984, according to Paul Hylbert, general manager of the division.

How to Beat a Sales Slump

Sales on the decline for a usually aggressive, productive salesman? Try one or more of these suggestions to get him back on the track.

o If he has the knack for management and paperwork, move him to an inside job.

o Spark his interest with a special market or products study; combine it with his usual selling responsibilities.

o Challenge him with a tough account, one of the company's biggest buyers, or a brand new territory to work.

o Ask him what would make the job more dynamic; maybe he is just bored.'

The Wholesaler's Assets and Investment in the lndustry

This is the third in a series o/' articles about the./brest products wholesaler o.f 1979. Material ./br these articles comes ./rom NAWLA sales surveys o.l' its 'membership,./rom the NA WLA Per./brmance Analysis Program andJrom the NAWLA "Observotion & Expectation" Report.

I N THE "good old days" of I wholesaling forest products. there was some truth to the adage of "Print some letterheads, rent a desk, put in a phone and you are a wholesaler." It's not that simple in today's marketing environment. It takes assets. investment and people to market product. People have always been a necessary ingredient of wholesale distribution. However, today those needed people are required to be better managers and possess sophisticated skills as never before.

Forest products wholesalers are meeting this marketing challenge on a number of fronts. Within the NAWLA wholesaler membership of 426 companies, there was an investment of nearly 100 million dollars in 1978 for added or expanded facilities and personnel. Our survey of wholesaler assets that same year indicated that these people passed the one billion dollar mark. These asset figures do not include the inventory and receivables "investment" of over 900 million dollars on a daily basis that are always part of the wholesaler's function.

Pretty impressive dollar figures. It enables wholesaler-distributors to better serve both their suppliers and customers. Suppliers desire and look for distributors who maintain substantial businesses that have the wherewithal to inventory, to introduce new products, and/or sell the "complete line."

Even in wholesale soecialization.

there is a requirement for assets and sophisticated marketing. At the same time, many customers rely more and more on ready access to local inventory for immediate shipment. To fulfill this need, over 200 NAWLA wholesaler companies offer distribution center services from over 400 locations.

These ever-growing service facilities and investments in industry product distribution would be meaningless without the people to "make things happen."

While customers and suppliers normally interface with just salesmen and buyers, each of these "specialists" are backed up by two other wholesale employees. These back-up people in administration, in warehouse personnel, in money management, are, by necessity, high trained people.

A case in point that illustrates the needs of today is the recently completed NAWLA survey on vehicle use, fuel consumption and transportation. Our members were surveyed under the auspices of the National Association of Wholesalers and NAWLA now has a profile on automobile use. truck

..THERE'S MORE THAN A MARGIN IN A WHOLESALER'S MARGIN OF A NAWLA DISTRIBUTION MARGIN!''

This parody of a famous fast food franchiser jingle emphasizes the fact that today's marketing requires much more than a salesman's fee for selling a product. Marketing is a distribution service in an economy fast becoming service-oriented.

Independent wholesalers are meeting this challenge of change. today and tomorrow.

IT TAKES ASSETS. The total assets of the 426 wholesaler members of North American Wholesale Lumber Association exceeded 1 billion dollars in 1978. lt is their contribution to the forest products industry as its primary distribution arm.

lT TAKES FACILITIES. Half of the NAWLA wholesaler members offer distribution center services from over 400 locations.

Nearly 60 NAWLA wholesalers operate reload centers.

Approximately 85 NAWLA wholesalers have remanufacturing capability.

lT TAKES PERSOMVEL. Independent NAWLA wholesaler members have a sales force of 3,875. lt takes another 8,352 people in executive, administrative and support capacities.

The movement of product, the service of distribution and the financial investment and support is the wholesaler function. A function which must be supported by somebody.

Forest Facts for Dealers

Firsthand knowledge of the forests, management practices, mill operations and product manufacturing capabilities is the goal of building supply dealers who recently toured Simpson Timber Co., facilities in Washington and Northern California.

More than 100 West Coast dealers visited the redwood forests and facilities in Arcata, Fairhaven, Mad River and Korbel, Ca., as well as the containerized nursery, the Columbia flush door plant in Vancouver, Wa., mills and manufacturing operation at Shelton, Wa., the stile and rail door plant, McCleary, Wa., and the research center at Redmond, Wa.

Steve Overton and Mike Moseby, product promotion reps for Simpson Building Supply Co., Seattle, coordinated the tour.

Rail LumberShipmentsOff

For the first time in history, railroads are carrying less than half the lumber shipped to market from mills in the westem lumber producing region of the United States.

Figures released by the Westem Wood Products Association reveal that during the first half of 1979 railroads carried 49.6Vo, trucks 48. l%o and water caries 2.3Vo.

Just a decade ago, railroads handled almost TlVo of all western lumber shipments. This had dropped to 60Vo five years ago.

Principal road freight ing the past

reason for the loss, lumbermen say, is railrates which have increased dramaticallv durl5 years.

ll, ITH THE increasing battle for lU a larger share of the wood products market, the pressure treaters in the Western states are engaged in an aggressive campaign to grab their share with treated lumber, posts, and poles for residential and com. mercial uses.

One of the biggest names in wood preserving in the West is McFarland Cascade, a member of the American Wood Preservers Institute, with facilities in four western states and Canada. The offspring of two pioneer firms, Idaho Pole founded by L.D. McFarland in Sandpoint, Id., in 1916, and Cascade Pole which began in 1936 on the Tacoma, Wa., tideflats, the firm operates five treating plants, six peeling and storage yards, and a sawmill.

Treatment plants at Sandpoint, Id., Bozeman, Mt., Eugene, Or., and Tacoma and Olympia, Wa., have facilities for handling lumber, timber, plywood, and poles. Penta, creosote, and water-borne salts treatments are possible with the addition, recently, of Wolman Salts (CCA-C) at the Tacoma plant.

According to Robert C. McBride, manager of sales, lumber, McFarland Cascade is now a

licensee of Koppers Co. on the Wolman salt program with the cylinder at Tacoma converted and operational for the Outdoor Wood@ Program. This treating plant was constructed in 1975 and is reportedly the most modern of its kind on the Pacific Coast. Facilities include a complete resawing and surfacing mill.

With the chain of treatment plants, it is possible for them to provide a wide range of services and complete custom work. Quality control labs strive for uniform

Extra-long retorts have the capacity of treating wood products with Penta, creosote, or waterborne salts. Pole treating by thermal full-length and butt-treating processes is done at Sandpoint.

As part of the All Weather Wood Foundations program, the company dries Chemonite-treated lumber and plywood in a 120'by 120' kiln. Products are then wrapped with moisture-proof covering to assure delivery of dry material.

Wood products manufactured by McFarland Cascade, poles, piling, posts, railroad ties, bridge timbers, guard rail posts, lumber, plywood, glulams, crossarms, flagpoles and ship masts, are in use throughout

Fuel Supplies from Wood

The use of wood to make alcohol for gasohol production could hike the nation's :ransportation fuel supply by at least 100/o before 1985, says Norval Morey, president of Morbark Industries, Winn, Mi. Through existing technology and government incentives, wood alcohol (methanol) can be produced at 34 cents per gallon for making gasohol, he said. This proven technology is the cheapest way to make gasohol, an alcoholgasoline blend.

Morey said methanol is the most feasible energy source for making alcohol fuel because wood is the nation's most abundant, renewable, alternate energy resource. He

noted that vast quantities of wood now simply rot and die in the nation's forests. Morey calls this "a tragic and monumental waste."

"There is enough wood going to waste on private and public lands in this country, that if we were to use only one-third of this wood, it could provide gasohol for all the automobiles in this country."

Expanding on this, he said this nation now uses 110 billion gallons of gasoline per year, and that auto industry officials have said in Con-

Each ton of dry wood yields 100 gallons of methanol. Using the most conservative estimate of the surplus wood annually available, I I billion gallons of methanol needed for a 100/o national gasohol program can be produced. On the high side, if engine modifications permitted l00o/o alcohol, as is being done in Brazil, there would be more than enough wood to provide oll of the automobile fuel necessary in the United States.

Furniture Market Ghanges

The 1980s will be a golden era for the specialists who feature all

apartment, was a key point covered during the Western Furniture Market in San Francisco.

It typifies the trend to service the consumer wishing to refurbish a single room at a time, according to Dave McCullam, v.p. sales for Northwest Hardwoods, Inc., which conducts in-depth studies of all table styles and woods used at primarry markets around the country.

Another study shows a change toward close pore woods in the Part three markets.

While the close-grain share of the total table market is still small, the steady growth for the past 18 months indicates an imPortant change may be on the way.

Maple and alder made the biggest gain with cherry off somewhat, and birch up slightly from last January. Walnut continued to show some resurgence up to 5.60/o compared to 5.20/o a year ago. Burls remained important at 5.50/o and 6.1% of the tables featured, other lesser known woods making the medium textured woods 20.50/o of the showroom areas.

With oak leading the way with 250/o of the table lines, the open pore and contrasty woods such as pine make up 37.30/o of the market presentations. Pecan was tabulated at 3.20/o which is the same as last January. With wicker and bamboo now commanding 6.50/o of the table lines, the total of genuine wood or natural forest materials now make up 7 60/o of the total tables offered at the western furniture market.

Obviously, most of the printed grain or overlay and the enameled or painted tables are made of wood or wood fiber materials, but the natural wood look is a much larger ratio of the market than previous years. This is in spite of the wide use of metal, glass, marble, slate, leather, and some elegant wear-

resistant fabrics. These were tabulated at 12.30/o of the market spaces while the all plastic was 2.10/0, and the printed overlay held at 5.50/0.

While more painted table lines, partly Oriental, were shown than last January, the total was 4.10/0, which is lower than a year ago. Painted units are much higher'

Composite Saves Trees

A new type of plywood that virtually will double the number of panels which can be made from a tree will start rolling off a new Georgia-Pacific Corp. production line by early 1980.

It will be the first "composite" plywood produced commercially in the Southern pine region. The product will have an oriented fiber flakeboard core replacing conventional veneers and will compete with conventional plywood, according to H.S. Mersereau, southern division senior v.p., who added that the panels also have advantages over conventional plywood.

The oriented fiber cores. made of special wood flakes with their grain running across the panel like conventional veneer cores, will be made in a new flakeboard plant being built adjacent to a conventional plywood plant under construction at Dudley, NC.

The new highly stable exterior panel will go to market under the name of Stable-X.

Composite panels are formed like a sandwich with wood veneer faces and backs bonded with phenolic resin to the flakeboard core ol specially cut wood flakes, bonded under heat and pressure with the exterior-grade phenolic resin. An automated layup line will glue and assemble the new panels.

The result is a panel for exterior as well as interior uses for which conventional sanded and sheathing grades ol Southern pine plywood are now specified, Mersereau said.

Pilot production of the new panels

has been market tested, approved by the American Plywood Assn. for quality standards, and meets all requirements for roof sheathing, floor panels and other construction applications in competition with conventional Southern pine plywood, according to Mersereau.

C0ilP0S|TE PIYU000 has rigid core (at pencil point) of oriented-tiber wood flakes r/instead of traditional laminated veneers in I development that virtually will double the number ol construction panels which can be made from a tree. Wood flakes in core are oriented in opposite direction of veneer face and back lor strength. Flakeboard core and veneers are lormed like sandwich and bonded under heat and pressure with exterior-grade phenolic resin.

Advantages over traditional allveneer plywood are said to be more rigidity and absence of voids or knots in the cores. Good wood unusable as veneer for conventional plywood cores can be used for the special flakeboard, substantially increasing utilization of the forest resource.

SELLING ENERGY

ing systems now account for some l2o/o of all heating systems shipments in the U.S., comPared to onlv 4olo in 1974. The market is skewed toward the South, the studY notes.

In the case of insulation, moreover. the market is "bY no means monolithic for other reasons as well." "Products based on different materials have differing physical properties and costs, leading to striking disparities in payback periods and cost efficieniies," says the study, which incorporates the co-efficients and other tables used to make the comParative calculations.

Some sample conclusions: Cellulose as an insulation material will lose market share; fiberglass, on the other hand, will gain market share.

The study delves into energY loss and gain via windows, and finds this to be "the most vulnerable area," but adds, "fortunately a large number of relatively inexpensive products can be used to minimize these losses." These include solar screens, special glass films, insulated glass windows and inside storm windows, among other items.

Still other potential energy saving products are reviewed, even the seidom-thought-of electric blanket. This item, alone, the studY concludes, can contribute significantly to energy reduction.

Panel Uses Throw-Away

A plywood-like panel called oriented strand board using what used to be throw-away timber is slated for production in the Northeast by Elmendorf Board Corp., a holding company from California.

Made of slivers from unmarketable parts of aspen and poplar; gnarled trees from the forest floor: and useless tree tops, the product is rated by Johan Veltkamp, v.p. for forest products of Data Resources. Inc., an economic research and information firm, as the "most significant development in forest pr5ducts in l0 years."

The new process slices wood into thin slivers about three inches long and a quarter of an inch wide. These are oriented or "lined up" to run in the same direction and bonded with phenolic resin under pressure and heat.

The first commercial facilitv in the United States for producing oriented strand board is scheduled to be built in New Hampshire this fall.

Officials at plywood companies, incJuding Georgia-Pacific Corp., which also has developed a new ply- wood-like product, reportedly doubt that there will be any nearterm reduction in plywood prices by

the new product. They are said to feel that when the industry gets moving it will be a lid on plywood prices rather than a depressant. Ply- wood prices have tripled in the past l0 years.

Positive Plywood Forecast

Expanding markets and new structural panel products highlight a. new five-year forecast report by the American Plywood Association. Growth in nonhousing markets wilf cushion the blow of a 1979 housing downturn that will extend into 1980. Government stimulation of the economy is expected to generate a recovery late in 1980 that will continue at a steady pace until it starts to peak out in 1983. The economic recoverv will revitalize the home building industry and, thanks to continued strons demand from nonhousing marketsl will push total structural wood panef demand to 21.2 billion sq. ft. in 1980 and nearly 24 billion by I 983.

The report also foresees a change in the pattern of industry growih during the next five years. Plywood mill construction will slow down in the South as the available timber base is more fully committed. New capacity will be added in the West to replace old and inefficient facilities now being closed in that region. The structural unveneered panel growth will center in the Midwest and Northeast, where timber is now underutilized.

Home Insulation& Tax Credits

_ Thirty percent of the people who responded to a survey dealing with attitudes about the energy crisis believe that home lnsulation is the single most eTiective way to conserve energy.

Results of the latest__phase of the Homeowners Early Wg1t1ilg Survey (HEWS) are based on the responses oT 1,000 homeowners, most of whom (987o) are ionvinced that fuel costs will continue to rise. At the same time, only 5l%o think that the energy crisis is real.

The survey, which is conducted six times a year by CertainTeed Corp., a major manufacturer of building'mate- rials, enables the company to assess attitudes of homeowners and identify trends.

The ease of d-i-y applications and the tax credit on energy-saving home improvements are the major stimulants in the home insulation market.

Significantly, l9.7Vo of the homeowners queried had added insulation to some area of their homes within the past 12 months. Of the respondents who had not insulated within the past year, 3l%o indicated that they had added some insulation prior to that time.

Most of those who insulated (73.2Vo) added insulation to their attics, while 50.4Vo concentrated their efforts on sidewalls as well. Under-floor insulation was done by 15.4Vo of the respondents.

Obviously satisfied with the results of their home insulation projects, 907o would do it again. The sampling showed that most used fiber glass insulation, did the work themselves or had it done in September and October, and cited the lowering of fuel bills as the primary reason for adding insulation.

Eighty-six percent of the respondents said they were aware of the tax credit on energy-conserving products, an increase of some eight percent ofer the numbirbf homeowners who were aware of it in December. Income tax filing and increased media attention on the energy bill are thought to have acquainted the public with the program.

Use good nails with redwood'

Top quality hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel, or aluminum nails only should be used with redwood outdoors, according to the California Redwood Association. The CRA urges lumber and building supply dealers to stock and recommend top quality nails for redwood users.

Other nails: electro and mechanically plated, hot-tumbler or poorly controlled hot-dipped galvanized, have a thin zinc coating that reacts with moisture outdoors and the decay and insect resistant chemicals in redwood. Corrosion exposes the nail to rust, causing stains and even weakened holding power.

Only top quality nails, which cost slightly more, are noncorrosive, match-

Stainless steel nails add $10-12 but also offer outstanding performance. Aluminum nails, also recommended, can save up to $1,200 in house Paint' ing costs over 15 years, according to one nail manufacturer.

Annual Shoot-Em-Up

The Black Bart chapter of the Hoo-Hoo fraternal organization of lumbermen held their annual B-BQ and trap shoot recently at the picturesque redwood grove of Harwood Products.

The grove of giant redwoods is located near the Harwood mill in Branscomb, Mendocino County, Ca. The annual Northern California get-together is becoming one of the highlights of the Hoo-Hoo calendar.

Jack Harwood hosted the affair and the sizzling steak luncheon was highlighted by the trap shoot. Over 160 members of the industry, representing all facets (management, sales, logging, transportation, etc.) were on hand for the beautiful weather and a great day of socializing.

WOOD FOR FUEL

(Continued from page 39)

quoted Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland as saying that the United States has more than 400 million acres of hardwood timber that currently is not being used in any way.

Morey advocates thinning the forests on a lS-year rotating cycle, which would increase annual growth rate.

He urged a crash program similar to that used during World War II in the production of bombers and liberty ships to implement construction of methanol plants.

Studies for the Department of Energy indicate a methanol plant can be built in 24 months at a cost of $35 million. It would take 400 such plants, each producing 25 million gallons of methanol per year, to meet the gasohol need. He emphasizes, "American know-how with leadership can win our economic war on the energy front."

Describing wood as "the cheapest, most abundant, renewable, environmentally clean, inexhaustible alternate energy resource this nation has," he said the technologies for harvesting wood for energy in usable form and for utilizing it for energy are ready-now and proven feasible.

Noting that during World War II Germany had used alcohol fuel, he expressed the hope that future U.S. energy programs "will recognize the vast potential wood energy provides."

applications, such as paneling and cabinetry.

In a variety of pattern profiles, smooth or saw-textured finishes and clear to tight-knotted grades, western red cedar also offers exteriors ranging from traditional to rustic or contemporary.

As more families stay closer to home for their vacations, outdoor amenities such as decks. benches. screens and gazebos are rapidly gaining popularity, and cedar's natural resistance to decay makes it sought after for these uses.

In addition to the Concepts booklets, WRCLA has other promotional and technical literature for dealers' mailing or counter use, available free in reasonable quantities, with additional copies at cost.

would have projected a survey like this ?

So there is a lot more to the utilization of a wholesaler's margin in today's business climate than ever before. It takes money to distribute a product efficiently. It would cost the producer and the customer a great deal more if the distribution were performed inefficiently. Thus, in the final analysis, the economic justification of the wholesaler-distributor is still the same. i.e.. his efficient distribution.

Northeastern Hardwoods

(PART FOUR)

This is the fourth in a four part segment on the major and minor commercial hardwood species of the Northeastern United States.ed.

Minor Specles

Northeastern hardwoods include several other species with characteristics and qualities that make them especially suitable for specific uses and applications, With the exception of soft maple, they are not generally available in sufficiently large quantities to justify special attention.

Northeastern Soft Maple (Acer saccharinum and Acer rubrum)

These two botanical classifications of species comprise "soft maple" in the Northeast. The tree grows in mixed hardwood forests, although it thrives best in the damp lowlands.

The properties are quite similar to those of hard maple; though, as the name implies, it is not so hard, strong or stiff. Northeastern soft maple is used largely for the same purposes as hard maple, except where strength and hardness are primary requisites.

Story at a Glance

A brief review of the hardwood species of the Northeast. . . major spe- cies include yellow birch, hard maple, black cherry, beech and red oak. .. minor species are soft maple, basswood, ash, whitebirchand yellow poplar or tuliptree. Part four.

Basswood (Tilia slabra)

American linden is another name for this species. It grows widely throughout the eastern part of the United States, but its important commercial range is confined to the Northeastern States. the Lake States and the Appalachian region.

The wood is whitish to creamy white or pale brown, sometimes with reddish tinge. It has a faint characteristic odor, especially when wet, and is straight-grained, light and soft. It is easy to work, which accounts for its wide use for hand carvings, and also for the fact that the early pioneers fashioned many of their household utensils and even furniture from it. Basswood shrinks and swells very little and holds its shape well.

One of the famous and distinctive uses of the lumber is the manufacture of piano keys. For that purpose the logs are cut into lumber when frozen, carefully selected for straightness or grain, then airseasoned in diffused light to preserve the color. Another important use isin the manufacture of venetianblind slats.

Basswood logs are in demand for veneer, which is eventually used for drawer panels, mirror backings and basket stock. Smaller quantities are used for dairy boxes and crates, millwork, core stock, trunks and valises, woodenware and novelties.

Northeastern basswood, because of its light color, its ability to remain flat without distortion. and to take enameled finishes, has consistently remained in the list of preferred woods.

Ash (Fraxinus omericana)

Northeastern tough white ash has had almost as important a part in the commercial development of our country as oak.

The wood of ash has a characteristic brownish color in the heartwood, but the sapwood is nearly white. It is straight-grained, heavy, hard, strong, stiff, high in shock

resistance, with excellent bending qualities, and it wears smooth with use.

As a rule, the tree grows in mixture with other species and forms only a small proportion of the stand. The Northeastern species reaches its maximum in the uplands of central and southern New York, north central and western Pennsylvania.

Probably less than half the ash that is cut goes into lumber. Much of it is cut into short logs or bolts to be utilized for handles of various kinds.

It is, by all odds, the preferred wood for baseball bats, because of its lightness, toughness, shock resistance and resilience. It is also the standard wood for shovel, spade, rake and other long handles, as well as athletic goods such as short oars and paddles, tennis racket frames, snowshoes, ski poles, polo mallets and hockey sticks.

In lumber form, it is used primarily for furniture and cabinet work where an open-grained wood is allowable. More particularly, it is desirable for bent parts and chair bottoms. It can be easily split into thin but tough and elastic strips, a quality which makes it a most desirable wood for basket work.

White Birch

(Betula papyrifera)

The Northeastern white or paper bark birch is another of the special purpose woods, suitable for specialty uses, that are very important in the economy of some parts of the Northeast.

The growth range of the tree is extremely wide, but it is found chiefly and most abundantly in the Northeast and the Lake States. It occurs in both pure stands and scattered through forests composed largely of other trees. Unlike its distant relative, the yellow birch, it is comparatively short lived, fast growing, and a relatively small tree.

The wood is uniform in texture, (Please turn to page 80)

light, soft and has little strength. It can readily be turned in a lathe, presenting a smooth white surface. Very little of it is cut into lumber, for as such it has no specific use. Some is cut into log lengths for turning into veneer which is diepressed into plates, spoons or ice cream forks, and either cut or turned into toothpicks. The major- ity is cut into short logs or bolts which are then sawn. on a bolt saw. into boards or planks. The boards are then turned into a great variety of products such as dowels, skewers, candy and ice cream sticks, shoe pegs and shoe shanks.

The white birch wood turning industry is chiefly centered in Maine.

Yellow Poplar or Tuliptree

(L iriodenro n tulipifera )

This is one of the most useful woods produced in the Northeast. It is found throughout Pennsylvania and as far north as central New York. The wood is soft, comparatively light and uniform in texture and density. It is easily worked

and takes print well. In some regions it is still known as "whitewood," probably because the Onondaga Indians of centralNew York first gave it that name.

It is available in limited quantities in Pennsylvania particularly. The upper grades are in demand for interior trim and cabinet work. The lower cutting grades of yellow poplar are used principally for high grade plywood core-stock.

The forests of the Northeast are composed of a wide variety of species in addition to those named and described. No detailed mention has been made of them because of their relative scarcity, although they may be important locally and for some special purposes.

American elm (Ulmus Americona), for example, is found throughout the Northeast. It is used here and there for occasional structural and flooring purposes; but in the days of the old-time wagon it was the preforred wood for wheel hubs. Many millions of feet of it have also been used for the hoops and staves of slack cooperage.

Cucumber (Magnolia Acuminata) and Butternut (luglans Cinered are found south from central New York and down through Pennsylvania. The furniture, cabinet work and interior finish of many of the old homesteads. and some of the new ones are made of these old-time favorites.
