lhy is Rcder oo strong?
Redwood particles have been mixed with 'rtra long, eirtra strong ftbers of Douglas r. Then with phenolic resin, it is all bonded
together under intense pressure and heat. Finally, the long edges are tongue and grooved and all four edges sealed to control moisture absorption.
The result is -a board of er<cellent internal bond and rupture resistance. On top of that Redex knows how to take a nail. Or a staple. And there are no face or core voids to contend with. No drecking or delaminating.
Reder Gan savc you a ton of moncytoo.
Forget about underlayment or other subflooring. Redex will handle everything. Which means you cut materials cost by about 30 per cent for every 2,(X)0 square feet compared to other usual flooring construction, at the same time taking a big chunk out d labor costs.
Speaking ofsaving labor, Redex tongue and groove also does away with the need
for blocking. So installation time is reduced by 8 to 10 manhours per average home.
Andlooh who approveo:
The FHA, ICBO, BOCA and Southern Building Congress all say Redex meets or exceeds their standards. In fact, Redex has been tested by the Underwriters laboratory and meets CXass III Flame Spread rating. Illre more lnformadon?

Whatts in a number?
lT APPEARS that 1978 is another one of I those years when the experts who make predictions on housing starts have got egg on their face. It's not so good for them, but for the rest of us, it's about the best news we've had in a long time.
Earlier this year the experts looked at all the usual factors affecting construction of new homes, weighed the evidence, and announced that the housing industry was in for a marked decline in new housing starts.
The only problem was, they didn't tell the public to stop buying. When mortgage money costs more, borrowing money and home buying are supposed to decline sharply. But this year, something else happened. With houses appreciating at an amazing clip and many buyers convinced that today's expensive home would be even more so next year, couples began to buy, damn the cost. Other market factors, such as the remarkably large number of singles buying homes, bolstered sales futher. The result was some out-of-kilter predictions.
It seems to us that the crystal ball gazers made a classic mistake. They applied yesterday's market measure to today's very different situation. They also neglected what many feel will be the most important single factor for the next ten years: the baby boom of 1947-57 is now home buying age. And they are buying homes at a record pace, 5.1 million new and used homes last year.
As this tremendous economic force moves through all phases of American life, "like a watermelon passing through a boa constrictor," in the felicitious phrase of a demographer, we would all be wise to keep in mind that yesterday's indicators may well mean something else in the changed market conditions of today.
As Fall begins, let's be aware of the rather startling concept that business may not necessarily react to the usual factors that have tradi tionally had a standard impact upon it. In short, housing may continue to be better than the numbers indicate.

fl Redwood Association quality offers all the practical construction efficiencies of plywood combined with the unique physical and aesthetic appeals of redwood.
The wood is recognized for its natural beauty, durability, dimensional stability, insulating qualities, and ease of finishing. Where panel products are desired, no other species can equal redwood plywood in terms of universal sales appeal and utilitarian advantages, according to CRA.
It is available with clear heartwood face veneers, or face veneers containing sapwood. The heartwood veneers contain natural extractives that are repellent to insects and decay organisms. Assuring the dimensional stability, redwood plywood stays in place and keeps its shape. Its abilities to resist the erosive effects of weathering, and to take and hold a wide variety of finishes, are excellent.
It may be used for either exterior or interior applications because it is manufactured with waterproof glue. In addition, all standard orders of sawtextured redwood plywood are finished at the mills with water repellent preservative.
Redwood plywood is manufactured with a saw-textured surface, which yields delicate shadow effects and is suitable for all exterior and interior uses. Saw-textured plywood is manufactured in two appearance grades:
Story at a Glance
Redwood plywood combines the wood's unique aesthetic appeal with the practicality of a panel that can serve the dual purpose of sheathing and siding in some applications uses include both interior and exterior.
Approved synthetic repairs rnay be used in lieu of wood repairs providing their durability is equal to or exceeds that of wood repairs. This top quality redwood plywood product is factorycoated with a special water repellent.
Sapwood-containing face veneers have the following characteristics: knots and knotholes not allowed. Synthetic-filled knotholes allowed. Pin knots allowed up to 3/8 inch. No open splits. Router or sled patches only allowed. Wood or synthetic shims allowed. This redwood product is factory-coated with a special water repellent.
Available thicknesses are 3/8" and 518". Width of grooved panels is 48-318", shiplapped on long edges to give a 48" face. Ungrooved panels are 48" wide and edges are not shiplapped. All are available in lengths of 8',9', and l0'

The top grade, with a clear, all heartwood face veneer, is identified by the proprietary grade names "Premium Ruf-Sawn " (Simpson Timber Co.) and "Clear Heart Saw-Textured" (The Pacific Lumber Co.).
The other grade, with a redwood face veneer which may contain sapwood, is identified by the proprietary grade names "Custom Ruf-Sawn" (Simpson Timber Co.) and "Select Saw-Textured" (The Pacific Lumber co.).
Plywood produced by CRA mernber mills meets or exceeds standards set by the American Plywood Association for 303 siding face grades.

Face veneers are clear heart redwood or may contain sapwood, depending on the grade. Backs are redwood which may contain sapwood in any amount.
CRA quality redwood plywood is manufactured with fully waterproof exterior glue. Redwood veneer for plywood is obtained by rotary cutting.
Redwood plywood has gained wide acceptance as a siding in residential and comnrercial construction - especially where a natural wood appearance is desired for nraxirnum beauty and minirrturl nraintenance.
Panels can be applied directly to studs, thus serving the dual purpose of sheathing and siding.
Because of plywood's ability to prevent racking whcrr prol"rerly nailed, diagonal bracing is not required when redwood plywood is applied to one 8' section or three 4'sections in each wall.
Another irnportant labor-saving, material-saving benefit is that building paper is not required with the installation of redwood olvwood.

Deck promotion a hit
ULL-SCALE redwood deck promotion with plans kits, in-store deck displays, sales training seminars and consumer clinics is boosting redwood lumber sales for California branches of Wickes Lumber this year, and offers great potential for redwood retailers everywhere.
Story at a Glance
Successful Wickes' test market of new CRA promotion program to sell more redwood deck business program included plans kits, store displays, training seminars and consumer clinics.
Based on Redwood Design-a-Deck, a complete do-it-yourself plans kit from the California Redwood Associa-
WICKES employees built redwood decks during dayJong sales training sesions for major redwood promotion this Spring and Summer. Employees from each participating store learned all about redwood decks, as part of training to conduct their own consumer clinics with full-scale displays.
tion, Wickes' promotion in 13 California stores has increased redwood sales an average of 2Wo over 1977's record totals, with individual stores reporting redwood increases tp Io lO0%.
The Wickes' program shows how retailers everywhere can adapt Designa-Deck sales aids and ideas to different regions, schedules and store lay-outs. Eventually redwood deck promotion may extend to all 280 Wickes stores and 47 Wickes-owned Builders Emporium centers nationwide.
Design-a-Deck's copyrighted manual, graph paper, plans and punchout deck patterns explain step-bystep deck design and construction to fit any house and yard. Complete materials lists streamline dealer handling of redwood lumber orders.
The kit's modular interchangeable deck sections measure 6 x 8 to 14 x 2O feet when built, with an average deck using around 1100 board feet of construction heart and construction common redwood grades. All kit materials, including plans for steps, benches and railings, are re-usable so adding deck space and amenities year after year offers great repeat and tie-in sales potential.
CRA now offers the kit at a new low dealer price of $2.50 ($4 consumer
list price), and has developed a free counter display holder, a new tipsheet on deck promotion ideas to increase redwood deck sales, and a step-bystep slide show, "How to Build a

The Who, What, and Where in lumber production
By Dwight Curran Contributing Editor The MERCHANT MAGAZINE
qSIT HAS so often in the past, this eighth annual compilation of lumber statistics makes very interesting reading. It can certainly provide insights, particularly if a buyer feels that he was not getting as much wood as normal from one of his suppliers. It must be pointed out, though, that changes in species mix, or the Quality of logs, can greatly affect what a mill has for sale even though the production stays constant from year to year.
What could be even more interesting, though not within the scope of this article, would be an analysis of how each company got to its present position of leadership in the industry.
But large size does not, of itself, guarantee profits. In some firms, the desire for bigness has outstripped its ability to be profitable, and there is nothing more important than the bottom line on the profit & loss statement.
For any lumberman, however, the study of these large production units is interesting in itself. And for that reason the figures are presented once again without any reference to sales or profits.
This article is based on information obtained ftomForest Industries' Annual Lumber Review & Buyer's Guide, 1978 edition. It does an excellent job of covering nearly 8O% of all the lumber produced yearly in North America. The smallest producer, for example, is listed as the Paul T. Tkalac Sawmill at Brown City, Mi. Production in1977 was 500 board feet.
Number One
Weyerhaeuser Co. has always been first since this survey began and it is first again this year with output of slightly less than 2 billion 4 hundred million feet (see Table I). Output increased 85 million feet over 1976. Weyerhaeuser has stated that it is of little meaning to furnish pro-
duction by location, so it is not possible to draw any comparisons.
However, of the top three producers, it appears to have a larger concentration of production in the Northwest than either L-P or G-P. It is not too surprising inasmuch as Weyerhaeuser began to buy timberlands in the Northwest as early as 1900.
Louisiana-Pacific is in the number two position and a relative "newcomer" to the business, having been formed in L973 as a spin-off from GeorgiaPacific.
Even though it's young, it's big. In 1977. L-P sawed I billion 796 million feet of lumber, more than 140 million feet greater than 1976. With the recent acquisition of Fibreboard Corp., it would appear that L-P could cross the magic 2 billion foot mark during this year.
The company produces a broad range of lumber products, both green and dry, in more states than any other producer (see Table II).
In the Northwest, L-P cuts wood in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. Moreover, the company appears to be more favorably viewed by the investment community than in the past.
Georgia-Pacific Corp. is number three with production of I billion

292 million feet, an increase of 132 million feet over 1976. Although G-P saws lumber in only two states on the Coast (Oregon and California), it cuts lumber in I I other states in the Southeast and Northeast, far more than any other producer.
Many years ago, Georgia-Pacific saw opportunities in the South and now has the bulk of its production located there. Thus, most of its increased production n l9ll came from the South and Southeast with many of those plants showing jumps of 10 to l5 million feet each.
Boise Is Fourth
In fourth place is the well managed Boise-Cascade Corp. The problems this firm experienced just a few years ago seem a long way off in the past, as it is now a much stronger company than it was in the early'70i.
Producton in 1917 was almost identical to 1916, ranging from 823 million feet in I97l to 820 rnillion feet n 1916. A new listing at Aberdeen, Wa., showed initial production of 29 million feet. Thc Yakima, Wa., plant showed a jump of 15 million f'eet, but this was offset by a decrease of I I million feet at Kettle Falls. Wa.. and 51/z million feet at Horseshoe Bend, Id. McCall, Id., plunged 17 million feet and the St. Helens, Or., site dropped 5% million feet. Enrrnett, Id.. had a setback of 4/z mllion feet while the two mills in the Medford. Or.. area showed a net increase of 2 ntillion feet. One of these plants was the former Olson-Lawyer Lurnber Co. at White City, Or.
Fifth-placed Champion International guaranteed its spot with 122 million feet more production than in 1976. Output for l9lJ was 812 million 544 thousand feet. Almost one third of that 122 mtllion foot incre ase came from the Darby, Mt., plant. Large gains were also noted at Salmon, Id., (19 million feet), Missoula, Mt., (18 million feet), and Bonner, Mt., (1 1 million). Newberry, S. C., showed a jump of 9 nrillion feet and the McCloud, Ca., mill boosted the cut by 8 nrillion feet. Other facilities showed increases of smaller amounts.
Potlatch Corp. was in slxth place again this year with an increase of 3.4 million feet in lumber sawed (over 1976), to 674,961,000 feet in l97l . PotlaIch operates in only three

A Trend Continues
I f ORE THAN 59% of the lumber lflshipped from the Western lumber region of the United States went to destinations in the West, according to Western Wood Products Association's latest report.
This region (excluding redwood) accounts for approximately 607o of the nation's softwood output.
Over 70% of the lumber shipped
within the U.S. by producers in the Northwest's coastal area and 54Vo of the lumber shipped from the remainder of the West went to Western destinations.
The report covers 55% of the lumber shipped from the coastal area and 85% of the lumber shipped from the inland area.
Reported total 1978 shipments
SHIPMENTS OF WESTERN LUMBER* TO 11 WESTERN STATES

from these two areas are down 1.77o over the same period last year. Overseas exports are off 30.9% and shipments to Canada are down 23.3%. The slack in the export markets has been offset by the expanding consuming markets in the West.
Shipments from the West were up 2.7% to 2,918,491,000 board feet.
"Demand for lumber is a result of a variety of phenomena," noted H. A. Roberts, WWPA's executive v.p.
"One is housing starts. The Western market for our products is expanding as Western starts continue to climb. Even though the figures show a slight decrease in shipments to California so far this year, Ihat state still accounts f.or 42.4Vo of the total Western shipments." Roberts said.
Although Western shipments to California for the period were off 5% from 1977, stlll 1,237,969,000 board feet were shipped there. More Western lumber is shipped to California than any other state.
Evidence of growth hotspots are sometimes revealed by "destination of shipment" figures. For instance, 161 ,269,000 board feet of Western lumber was shipped to Arizona in the first half of 1978, a whopping increase of 29.6% over the same period a year ago.
Other Western states shipments up over thel977 first half include: Nevada, up 18%;New Mexico,up 13.8%; Oregon, up 7.6%; Utah up 6.87o; Washington, up 8.8%; and Wyoming, up 4.6%.
Shipments were down from last year in two Western states besides California: Idaho, down .5% and Montana off l.'l%.
Roberts also noted the Western trend away from railroads and to truck carriers, noting "undependable service" on the part of the railroads.
"The rail car shortage will probably continue well into this fall, but we may face still another one again next year," he said.
Story at a Glance
Nearly 60% of the lumber shipped from the West remains in the West, part of a continuing trend reasons include strong local markets, increased rail rates and competitive incursions into traditional Eastern markets by competing species.
So far this year, railroads have carried 3.3% less Western softwood lumber than the first half of 197'7 while truckers have transported 4.7Vo more.
In the other regional markets, Western lumber shipments to the Northeast U.S. were off I3%.

MOUNTAIN STATES
KENT MOXEY executive secretary
f,l ECUeXICS' and materialmens' lUl lien laws are of basic importance to the whole credit system for home building.
The very existence of this statutory lien rieht lends security to a lumber dealer's accounts whether he files a lien or not - the important fact is that he can.
From time to time, the lien laws are threatened in the state legislatures with amendments that would weaken or eliminate the building material suppliers' lien rights or make the paperwork requirements so burdensome as to unduly discourage material suppliers from protecting their right to file a lien.
The heaviest threat now progressing against the lien right is article 5, construction liens, of the Uniform Simplification of Land Transfers Act which is a set of model statutes recommended for enactment in all the states by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and endorsed by the American Bar Association.
It is expected that the USLTA will come railroading into the state legislatures starting next January. It is feared that the inertia created by the whole act will lend strength to article 5 thereof which in tone and
substance is detrimental to the retail lumber dealers' interest, compared with existing lien laws.
Our National lumber dealers assocition has taken the lead in efforts to prepzue countermeasures for use in all the states when the USLTA is introduced.
Here in the Mountain States, we have five legislatures to deal with in defending the lumber dealers' lien rig;hts, so it is extremely important that this association be prepared when the time comes in each state.
The board has engaged the services of a lawyer who specializes in lien law work to act as counsel to the association in lien law legislative
matters which may arise in any of our five states, particularly as they may be precipitated by the'introduction of the USLTA.
The board also directed the attorney, Jim Seccombe, and yours truly, to participate in a conference of several interested associations held in Washington, D. C. July 25-26. The purpose of this conference sponsored by our national lumber dealers association. was to draft a model lien statute. satisfactory to material suppliers' interests, that could be offered as a replacement to article 5 when the USLTA is introduced in the state legislatures. lien statute, satisfactory to material suppliers' interests, that could be offered as a replacement to article 5 when the USLTA is introduced in the state legislatures.
We participated in the Washington conference to contribute our association's assistance to this national effort, and to educate and prepare ourselves as well as possible before the legislative activity begins.

THE NATIONAL Lumber and
I Bu.ilding J\4ate.rial Dealers Association will conduct its annual meeting, Oct. ll-14, in Music City, U.S.A., Nashville,Tennessee.
The Western region building mater- ial dealers have always been poorly represented at the national meetings. Even when the meetings were held in San Diego and San Francisco our Western dealers did not respond.
The same has been true at our annual Conference with Congress; Western dealers have shown apathy. There must be some means of encouraging you to attend important meetings that will assist you in your operation. Most of you have received the national meeting registration materials. Music City, U.S.A. is an excellent area for meetings. National has programed an outstanding meeting that will permit you to meet with dealers from across the nation to learn of new and innovative methods needed to continue the progress of our industry.
Business will slow somewhat in October and you will have an opportunity to get away for a few days of much needed rest. There isn't a dealer in the Western region who cannot afford the trip. There isn't a dealer who's business will collapse if he leaves for four days.
Isn't it time the Western dealers started attending the national meetings and show national dealers that there are more dealers in this country than iust those East of the Rockies?
Dealers and Energy
The resources and personnel of 15,000 of the country's retail lumber and building material dealers have been offered to help the Department of Energy carry out its assigned mission of bringing 9Wo of the nation's 74 million existing homes up to a minumum energy conservation standard by 1985.
This resource could be of significant assistance to a new agency faced with such a major task. Richard D. Snyder, exec. v.p. of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Assn. says the effectiveness of the government's programs, its literature, films and educational materials promoting energy conservation could be multiplied many-fold by utilizing the business contacts at the nation's grass roots maintained by the building material dealers' more than 200,000 employees in over 20,000 locations throughout the nation.
The lumber dealers' dominant position in the building materials marketplace with over $25 billion of business executed this year makes them the natural distribution channel sought by leading manufacturers of energy conservation products. Other retailing groups do only a fraction of this volume, Snyder pointed out.

LUMBER PRODUCTION
(Continued from page 15 )
states: Arkansas, Idaho, and Montana. The products it makes in Idaho are marketed only as dry lumber and there is no green production shipped into the West Coast.
The mill at Lewiston. Id.. cut almost 199 million feet of lumber in 1977, a slight drop from the 204 million feet of 1976. From the information made available to the survey, this is the single largest producing unit in North America. The St. Maries, Id., unit showed an increase of l0 million feet while Prescott, Ar., showed a 5 million foot boost. The Twin Feather mill at Kamiah. Id.. showed a decrease of almost six million feet and the Rutledge plant at Coeur d'Alene dropped 31,4 million feet to 64 million 738 thousand feet. Corporate headquarters for Potlatch are at San Francisco, Ca.
Publishers Is Seventh
Seventh place Publishers Paper nudged its cut up to 563 million feet to put them 52 million feet ahead of last year's 8th place showing. The
Burney, Ca., mill took bows for an increase of 25 million feet, almost half of the 52 million feet gain. The Portland. Or.. mill had an increase of l3 million feet and the Clackamas, Or., site shot ahead almost ten million feet.
Crown Zellerbach fell back to Sth place this year from last year's 7th place showing. Although their annual cut spurted 35 million feet to 556 million 700 thousand feet in 1977, it was not enough to keep Crown Zee in 7th place.
The largest jump, at Joyce, La., was l3 million feet; Twisp, Wa., counted for another l0 million foot boost. Ornak, Wa., bounded ahead by 9 million feet to 86 million feet plus. Columbia City Or., also got out 5.5 rnillion more feet than in 1976.
IP Co. Is Ninth
International Paper Co. stayed number 9 as compared to 1976 even though it had a 55 million foot increase over 1976's 480 million feet. Five rnills in the South accounted for 39 million feet of the gain while Gardiner, Or., had an 8 million foot increase. Chelatchie, Wa., operations came in with a 7 million foot increase that
helped give IP Co. such a good year.
To round out the top ten, St. Regis Paper Co. made it safely to the top this year by beating out last year's winner, Willamette Industries. To do so, St. Regis had to cut 37 million feet more than Willamette's 43 I million feet of 1977. Since St. Regis cnt 374 million feet in 1976,it was not on the survey because it was in the l5th spot in 1976.
But all that changed this year with a new plant at Libby, Mt., which accounted for 82 million feet of that gain while Costigan, Me., added 10 million feet.
Readers who have followed the fortunes of the mill at Klickitat. Wa.. will be disappointed to know that its footage dropped off by 9 million feet while two mill sites at Tacoma. Wa.. produced almost the same amount as in 1976. Overall, St. Regis had an increase of 94 million feet over 1976, or 25%.
1978 no doubt will be a banner year for the lumber industry, too. It is interesting to look ahead and attempt to determine what changes might take place in the corning year.
For example, not-so-small Sierra Pacihc Industries at Redding, Ca., is (Please tum to page 32 )

New plywood floor system
Sturd-I-Floor, the refined plywood grade designed specifically for singlelayer residential floor applications, is beginning to appear in the marketplace, coinciding with a nationwide American Plywood Assn. promotional campaign.
"We feel Sturd-I-Floor could be the key that unlocks the full potential of single-layer plywood floors," comments APA executive v.p. Bronson J. Lewis. "Sturd-l-Floor will make it easier for the industry's customers to specify plywood and easier for APA members to produce, through greater manufacturing flexibility and better resource utilization."
The proprietary single-floor grade was developed by APA to capitalize on the growing popularity of singlefloor applications. Over a third of the plywood consumed by the residential
construction industry is used for floor applications and singleJayer floors is the system most widely used by home builders.
Sturd-I-Floor is the newest member of the APA family of span-rated engineered plywood. The panels carry a Span Index showing the maximum recommended spacing of floor joists, based on the panel's structural performance.
It is manufactured with Span Indexes of 16,20,24,and 48 inches and in thicknesses ranging from 19132inch to l-l/8-inches. Panels are produced with either square edges or tongue-and-groove joints and as full exterior panels or as interior type with exterior glue.
In addition to conventional veneer layups, Sturd-I-Floor also encompasses composite panels. And, since the Span
Index is based on panel performance, identification of the wood species group is not necessary.
Sturd-I-Floor meets requirements of all model building codes as performance is based on plywood's proven capabilities demonstrated by comprehensive tests and years of experience in residential applications.
LUMBER PRODUCTION

the largest independent lumber producer in the United States todaY. Had it appeared in this survey, it would have been in thirteenth Place with production of 414 rnillion feet.
In recent months, however, the firnr has installed five new carriages and several new setworks at its sawmills in Northern California. It appears as if their production,in our estimation, could increase to 440 million feet for 1978. As a result, it might catapult Sierra Pacific Industries into contention for tenth place in next year's survey. It is difficult to forecast this with any degree of accuracy because ofdecisions being made by other producers, but it is something to watch closely.

MERCY KILLING OF OLD TREES
"How would you like to be eaten alive by bugs? Support mercy killing of old trees! A noble giant of the forest, ruler of his domain for several hundred years deserves a more honorable death than to be eaten alive by insects!
"And you sawmills can go a step further and give these proud trees a dignified memorial service by selling the clear lumber to us. We will make mouldings and door jambs from the lumber which will be sent to the Deep South where they love to apply a natural finish rather than hide the beauty of the grain with (ugh) paint.
"Really now, does a 300 year old tree deserve to be converted to plywood and be covered by a rug and walked on? Or be covered with vinyl and be put on a wall, made to look like ash or fruity pecan?
"We will treat your trees with the reverence and respect that they deserve."

DECK PROMOTION

Redwood Deck," available for $25 on special request.
Wickes' Redwood Design-a-Deck promotion began last October when the Petaluma, Ca., store's redwood deck display at a local home show drew tremendous consumer response. As a result, contractor-designer O'Grady conducted dayJong employee sales training seminars for a statewide redwood deck program.
Full-scale deck displays in each store average 10 x 12 feet with a bench, railing, steps and two floorlevel deck sections with part of the deck under-structure exposed. The CRA's redwood deck slide show was also adapted to Wickes' automated alv equipment for distribution to California stores.
From April 15 to May 18, Wickes ran special quarter-page newspaper ads on deck clinic programs planned for Summer, included since in regular full-page weekly ads. Although some retailers pre-package lumber for com-
mon deck sizes, Wickes lets customers choose lumber and offers plans kits free with deck purchases.
Wickes' clinics running every two to six weeks usually attract 20 to 30 customers from up to 100 miles away, half d-i-yers, the rest non-d-i-y homeowners and builders both seeking and

C0MPLETE redwood deck service and d-i-y info with full-scale displays, plans kits and consumer clinics are boosting redwood sales for l3 California branches of Wickes. Wickes' statewide campaign boosted sales up to 100% for some participating stores and may eventually go to all 280 stores nationwide. Here Richard 0'Grady (left), contractor and originator of the Design-a-Deck idea develops some d-i-y confidence at Wickes'San Marcos store.

Individual deck sales in all Wickes stores average $1,000 but range from $200 to $6900, with professional installation adding 50 to l1Vo. An employee incentive program offers cash bonuses from $5 for redwood sales up to $250, to $25 for sales over $ I 900.
Typical of the program's flexibility, Wickes' Napa store has run three tiein clinics on redwood deck finishes and lumber grades only. One clinic alone resulted in eight complete deck sales, in addition to valuable exposure for comprehensive redwood deck service.
Assistant store manager Vic Flores has found consumers quite willing to spend up to $9 for a half-gallon of some finishes, although 90-minute question-answer sessions also cover trisodium phosphate, oxalic acid and other less expensive treatments; clinics
also explain natural weathering effects of untreated redwood. Flores also promotes hot-dipped galvanized nails recommended by the CRA for best performance without staining wood.
Returnon-investment for redwood deck promotion is "hard to gauge," according to Wickes' regional sales manager Bob Kimmal. Deck displays required lumber worth $375 ($550 at consumer prices), while special quarter-page ads cost $125-$200 each and training time involved at least one full day for up to four employees from each store.
Overall, however, the program is "a great success," said Kimmal, "particularly where some centers that hadn't seemed like hot redwood markets really took off." WickesStockton reports redwood sales up 32%, Napa 5Wo, and Fowler, in rural San Joaquin Valley, a full loVlo from 1971.
Long-term sales potential? According to O'Grady, whose deck clinic experience with other retailers goes back several years, consumers buying Design-a-Deck kits this year will plan and budget for big purchases next year.
ALASKA RETAILER
(Continued from page l0 ) and trailer.
Sales for the two day celebration amounted to more than $ 100,000, not bad when you consider that the population is only 3,500.
The company is 7O% owned by the Palmer G. Lewis Co., a major distributor of building materials in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The 7,200 sq. ft. retail area, 19,000 sq. ft. warehouse plus more than ltve acres for parking and outside storage easily establish Superior as the largest building supply yard on the Peninsula.
Dean Sabey, Superior v.p., attributed the success of the opening largely to the cooperation of suppliers, store personnel and the local media.
To enhance the excitement of the grand opening, the program included eight magic shows on Friday and Saturday performed by Jim Bender, a salesman for the Palmer G. Lewis Co., and an accomplished amateur magician from the Seattle, Wa., atea.
The highlight of Saturday, was a visit by the Peninsula Oilers, ilt amateur baseball team and 1971 national champions.

How to get maximum sales potential from kitchen center cabinet displays
lltlDE AISLES and good lighting
I U are important in the design of a kitchen display center. But other elements can mean the difference between displays that sell occasionally and ones that become "best sellers."
Properly locating the kitchen center is essential. Ideally, kitchen centers in departmentalized stores should be set up near, but not in, high traffic areas. Cabinet sales presentations usually are effective when conducted in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that's removed from distractions such as busy cash registers.
The kitchen center should "stand apart," and have its own identity. People don't shop for hardware the same way they shop for cabinets. When buying highticket items, they don't expect the "plain pipe rack" treatment. Put your cabinets in a setting that shows them off if you expect to sell eye-appeal and luxury.
Story at a Glance
Specific suggestions to follow when you set up a kitchen cabinet display included are use of accessories, lighting ideas, selection tips and upkeep and maintenance hints.
Kitchen cabinet displays that do the best selling jobs usually are set up as if they were intended to be used. What could appeal to a homemaker more than a realistic kitchen display that says, "I was designed with you in mind?" Don't forget that accessoryloaded cabinets have the greatest housewife appeal.
A good kitchen center display should include a variety of styles such as colonial, provincial, traditional, contemporary and modern cabinets. In any event the range of cabinets displayed should be suf-
ficient to prevent customers from visiting the competition because of lack of selection.
Keep door samples of the cabinets you don't display. A picture in a cata-
log might be worth a thousand words, but the real thing can make a sale. Display each cabinet setup in a manner that will protect its individu(Please tum to page 42)

MERCHANDISING KITCHEN CABINETS
(Continued from page 39)
alism. Use different backgrounds for each and decorate them so that each appears to be in a separate setting. Where possible let accent pieces match the period; pewter pots with colonial is one example.
Seek the feminine viewpoint. Some dealers ask their wives to give the displays a real woman's touch. Plants are useful for decorating kitchen cabinet displays. They can be hung or placed on counters to add a breath of life that most women appreciate.
Pay particular attention to the placement of cabinet setups in regard to corners and lighting. Nothing is less attractive than cabinets with dark finishes that are placed in blind corners without ample lighting. If you must display cabinets in such areas, be sure to upgrade the lighting and use bright accents to draw attention to the cabinets.
Establish cleaning and maintenance
schedules for kitchen center displays and adhere to them. Charge someone with this responsibility. Avoid cluttering up display areas with catalogs, samples, hand-outs, order forms, etc. These can be conveniently stored in the cabinets instead. Cleanliness and neatness can create an image of pride, concern and attention to detail.
Check the kitchen center periodically to see that no hardware is missing from the cabinets and that functional pieces are operating in good order. Cabinets with missing handles or pulls won't help you close sales. And neither will door catches that don't hold, drawers that don't glide, orlazy susans that don't turn.
Make use of the National Kitchen Cabinet Assn. point-of-purchase stickers in the showroom. They are selfadhesive for easy placement on the front of certified cabinet doors. These "silent salesmen" will help promote the benefits of certified cabinets to your customers.
You might also want to keep copies of the NKCA consumer booklet on hand for interested customers. Most homemakers appreciate printed information to aid them in the selection ofkitchen cabinets and vanities.

It is available with related accessories such as splices, flush or recessed, closures, edge trims and cliPs. All come in a broad range of colors including a mirror finish.
Hot Stufl
Powrmatic's new Grate One incorporates sturdy cast iron grates so that ioal as well as wood can be used. It is available in two basic designs; one burns coal, wood and oil; the other burns coal, wood and gas.
Oil, (or gas) and solid fuel are burned in separate combustion chambers. The switch from one form of combustion to another is effected automatically.
During periods of Power failure, the solid-fuel chamber can be operated on the gravity principle. Otherwise, there are twin 10" blowers and positive draft control.

SuperSide Goes West SuperSide, a new nominal thick hardboard siding designed for improved performance in high moisture areas. has been introduced West of the Rocky Mountains by Masonite Corp.
Produced at their hardboard mill in Ukiah, Ca., SuperSide is available either as preprimed lap siding or prefinished panel siding for both site-built homes and manufactured housing. It has handling properties similar to Masonite's line of 7/ 16" thick X-90 hardboard sidings.
SuperSide lap siding is 12" wide and 16' long. It is finished in natural
brown PreTone to provide a good paint base and comes in three different styles: a smooth finish for the traditional clapboard look, and the simulated woodgrain patterns of Masonite brand Ruf-X II and Woodsman. Ruf-X has the rustic appearance of rough-sawn wood, while Woodsman reproduces the grain and texture of natural cedar.
The Woodsman pattern is also featured on SuperSide vertical planked panel siding, available in either 4' x 8' or 4' x 9' panels with shiplapped edges. It is offered in three different prefinished colors.
Masonite says that more than one million square feet of SuperSide have
been field-tested in the Pacific Northwest for the past three years with outstanding performance results.

Redwood Letters, Numbers
A unique selection of bold redwood letters and numbers is now available ia a variety of sizes.
The excellent weathering characteristics of redwood are combined with distinctive styling for truly practical results. The natural beauty of select, California redwood compliments any interior or exterior surface.
Complete display programs include a variety of revolving and stationary racks. Products are available with printed display cards containing simple mounting instructions and zuggestions for use.
Resin Raves
Lexan resin, from General Electric, is tough, rigid, and creep resistant, the company claims.
Itls dimensional stability also assures close molding tolerances, and press- fit fastening is possible because polycarbonate's excellent creep resistance can take loads up to 8,000 psi for short periods at room temperature without permanent deformation, the company reports.
With low moisture absorption, it maintains precise function despite constant exposure to water, and impact strength stays high, according to the firm.

Glag and Steel Doors
A new concept in patio doors, the Vista system combines the spacecreating effect of glass with insulated steel doors and a space-saving, unique center hinging method for decorating freedom.
Vista patio doors by Benchmark have 2-panel or 3-panel systems in complete units, which may be combined for any number of panels. Each panel is a ls{ight model or l-light with insulated safety glass in an insulated foam-filled steel door. By combining units, the spacious look of a glass panorama can be achieved with the protection of steel doors.
Any one door may be active. The active door is hinged to a center jamb, and swings back against an inactive door for more convenience in home decor. This double rabbeted jamb anchors the inactive door and combines with the patented Benchmark steel lock and deadbolt preparation for an added dimension of strength and security.
The system is an energy+aving total unit ready to install in a rough opening. It includes the frame with center jamb(s), the Benchmark frost-free design threshold, magnetic and compression weatherstripping that seals like a refrigerator, and weathersealing bottom sweep on the active door.
Plastic Backwater Valve
National Drain Supplies has the Spee-D-Valve Backwater Valve, molded in tough, durable A.B.S. plastic to eliminate rust and corrosion problems encountered with cast iron. It offers lower initial cost, lighter weight and substantial savings on installation time and shipping costs, according to the firm.
Intended for drain, sewer, irrigation and other residential, commercial and industrial applications where water back-flow must be prevented, it is available in D.W.V. dimensions of 3" and 4" with standard hub inlet and spigot outlet.
It includes a self-lubricating plastic hinge, eliminating the chance of rust or hang-up in the movement of the valve flapper and insuring a positive
seal when the valve is closed, the firm claims. Standard 6" D.W.V. pipe may be used as a riser for access to the bayonet-threaded valve clean-out cap, eliminating the need for the usual brick-and-mortar box over the valve.
DIY One-Piece Floors
Mannington Mills has 12' wide sheet goods, which can be used for a no-seam, one-piece bathroom floor, for diy'ers, installation procedures have been simplified.

Quiet Chain Saw
Tenson Co's Minibrute l2-volt chain saw makes only one-tenth the noise of gasoline powered saws, and one-fourth the noise of electric chain saws, according to the company.
An automotive battery is the power source. To operate, simply attach the battery clips of the saw's power cable to your l2-volt battery and press the switch for instant starting. It does not use power except when it is cutting. Most automotive batteries have power enough to cut a pickup load of wood.
Power output is 985 watts. It has a chain tension adjuster, wrap-around "close cut" type handle bar, plus automatic and manual chain oiling, and 7-lb. powerhead with a 20'power cable and 14" sprocket nose bar.
Underslab Vapor Barrier
To solve the problem of moisture migration into a building structure, St. Regis Paper Co. has a new, improved quality underslab vapor barrier, Moistop 395.
It is applied after the base for concrete has been leveled and tamped with the 96" width laid parallel to the direction of the pour of concrete. Because of its unique multi-ply construction, it reportedly offers a high degree of resistance to abrasion, scuffing, puncturing and tearing and its improved structure provides easy lay-down in cold weather.

DO YOU REMEMBER?
Mr. Hay's self pity (see The Merchant, July, p.50) over "the real tough job of selling redwood" brought crocodile tears to my eyes, and also started my mind to wander over 40 years-plus of this great business.
I'll put it this way, I remember when Jack Dionne ran "The Merchant", do you? When Lloyd Cole had a young salesman named Fritz Hawn at Hammond Redwood. When George Clough ran the show for Bert McKee at San Pedro and Jim Chase was his right hand man. Al Privett was in charge at E.K. Wood, and "Rex" Clarke was the leader at Consolidated Lumber, and 8,000 to 10.000 feet was a truck and trailer load for Patten Blinn. W. B. Wickersham had a salesman named Bill Shorse at Pope & Talbot and "Charlie" Henry ran the Twin Harbors' office. Wendell Brown sold for McDonald & Harrington, too.
Remember that yard center of Beverly Hills? number OXford 6l9l Sun Lumber Co.
in the very Its phoneand name
Owen Dalton had a yard on Western Ave. around the corner from Wayne Mullinsr yard. Not long ago Lowell Kolb & Chuck Nelson stopped by the house and we talked over these and many other old times.
"Pappy" McCartys phone number when you needed a truck was San Pedro 36. -'Fitz" sold timbers, etc., for San Pedro Lumber.
Gus Hoover had a young salesman named Bob Leischman and Bob Hoover was a "grader" in Hollywood as well as going to Stanford with brother Dick.
When Ty Cobb was a salesman for Red River Lumber Co. before starting out on his own and Ray Hill was Don Philips' right hand after Ted Lawrence passed on. And Ed Fountain had a partner in the wholesale business named Stu Smith.
How about the time Abe Jackson and Ray Shannon swapped jobs for Union Lumber? "Sandy" MacDonald and Joe Hall ran the show at Owens Parks for the Melins.
Bill HanJn sold for John Rudbach and Jim Hudson. Did you know Harry H. White was a shortstop and played for (I believe) Cleveland for a short time? Harold Frodsham was a building contractor and lived in Manhattan Beach.
How many remember Art Kaiser and Bill Knight, two great guys of the past. "Friday" Freeland long before
there was a Far West and who was the man at Huff Lumber? Why George himself, of course. Also Howard Page was sales manager for Coos Bay Lumber Co., and George Reave had a plywood distribution yard in down town L.A. Al Bell and Lou Godard kept things going at HobbsWall and Fred Holmes at HolmesEureka, and Ed Bauer and Carl Porter left Bohnhoff to start Atlas Lumber Co. Max Barnette was getting a start at E. K. Wood on the order desk, and George Geary sold pine for them.
Who will ever forget the man with the trip hammer mind and bushy eye brows. Ralph Baker of Hayward and Barr fame. Or Pop Henderson at Woodhead on Pico Blvd., The Alley
Bros. from Santa Monica or the Stoner family of West L.A.
Remember when Park Arnold had a roofing company behind Bentley Lumber on Los Feliz Blvd. and "Slim" Hightower was "Super" at Fox Woodsum. And Kerckoff Cuzner built their new yard on Highland near Sunset Blvd.
I also remember when Roy Pitcher and Curt McFadden started Associated Lumber with $10,000 borrowed money, for I was there.
Sincerely,
Bob Sutton Fallbrook Lumber Co. 801 S. Main Fallbrook, Ca.92028
