Gongratulations to the environmentalists

Here we are in the middle of summer, with more than 2.5 million acres of forests already burned, with more than 30,000 people and visitors evacuated and fleeing their homes and hotels, and firefighters putting their lives on the line. A new fire seems to break out every other day.
While the environmentalists garner the headlines for their attempts to disrupt our businesses, little is heard in the press or from environmentalists about how and why they should take the blame for the destruction of the very thing they pledge to save-our forests.
By the way let's add Washington also. There is no doubt that a series of environmental laws passed over the last l0 years has contributed mightily to the state of our public forests today. In fact these laws have fueled the fires. No

one can be blamed for the seven year drought, but the environmentalists and government can be blamed for pursuing policies that were clearly disastrous and have led to as much as 400 tons of undergrowth per acre covering the tinderbox dry forest floor and the lack of thinning.
Environmentalists have recently stated that it is unfair to make them scapegoats for blocking efforts to thin forests. But, why not? They have been making this industry scapegoats for years.
They can unfurl their banners, they can sit in trees, they can disrupt association events, or go to court, but nowhere do I hear them taking accountability for the sorry state of our public lands and forests. We are ablaze thanks to the kowtowing of government to the minority who always manage to grab publicity while presenting a false picture to the confused public. For sure there are many who are well meaning, but unfortunately it is the extremists who steal the thunder. While progress comes from reaching agreeable middle ground on both sides, unfortunately the radicals create the loudest noise, and allow good sense to go up in smoke.
The private sector would never manage our national forests the way they are managed today. With the one resource this country has that is renewable we have taken giant steps backwards in the public sector. They have been totally mismanaged, and what we are seeing now is the end result. The thinning that is done today is extremely limited. We are now ablaze due to poor government stewardship of our finest natural resource.
Timber harvesting is the answer, by an industry that has evolved into being responsible social citizens. Harvesting mature trees before they die should be an obvious answer.
If in traveling this summer you find yourself near Mt. St. Helens, see for yourself the difference between the stagnant government side of the mountain and the reforested Weyerhaeuser side. It is night and day. It is time fbr common sense to prevail again. Privately owned forests are healthier and more productive than their government counterparts. Our government must take the right steps and understood that for the long-term survival of our forests for our children and grandchildren, forests need to be managed, resources have to be given, forests have to be opened up to the private sector that knows how to manage the land, and a true picture must be shown to the public about how this industry runs its business.

CERTIFICATION of forest products is a growing, hotly debated trend. Which certification standards are better? important is gaining third-party certification to timberland
How managers, manufacturers and distributors? Will end-users pay more for certified products?
The purpose of this Buyer's Guide is not to endorse any particular type of certification over another. Just to provide buyers for the first time with a guide to easily track down sources of forest products certified by all accredited agencies.

It is comprised of two sections, a Product Guide grouping suppliers by product categories and a companion Supplier Directory with contact information. The Directory also lists the certifying body, since each has different guidelines, and identifies the type of company (manufacturer, wholesaler, etc.).
Also note that merely because a company may be listed as providing certain certified products does not mean that all such products provided by that company are certified.

Are certification partisans seeing the forest?
By Huck DeVenzio
I wonder if any others attending the recent Forest Leadership Forum saw things as I did. It seems to me that the individual certification programs represent the top level in an environmental hierarchy of materials choices.
At the base of this hierarchy is the decision to use wood or an alternative material, namely a nonrenewable material with greater energy requirements, such as steel, concrete, or plastic. If wood is not chosen, the remaining decisions are irrelevant.
On the level above this foundation is the distinction between wood from managed forests and wood from unmanaged forests. When illegally logged wood is used or when trees are cut from natural forests for fuel, the remaining decisions are again irrelevant.
Among the managed output, there is a choice between wood from certified forests or from uncertified forests. As of now, most managed forests are not certified by any organization, and most people have little awareness of certified wood. Only after that-at the fourth level in the hierarchy-do we come to the decision of which certification program is preferable.
I understand the competitive feelings.
12 Tnn MBncHl.Nir Mlclzntn Aucusr 2002
The various programs have been developed by dedicated people who painstakingly created and refined them.
However, the choice of a certification program is presently the least significant environmental step of the four steps outlined.
I think that FSC and SFI have more in common than in dispute. And so do International Paper and the Dogwood Alliance. I hope everyone who attended the Forum agrees that we should not be replacing wood products with steel, concrete or plastic products. [f so, everyone should also agree that we have more productive places to direct our effort than on competitive entrenchments.

In coastal areas where marine-boring organisms like Teredo, Pholad, and Limnoria tripunctata are present, there's an impoftant need to protect below-water pilings. CHEMONITE/ ACZA provides the best possible protection for above-water and below-water structures everywhere, from freezing seas to tropical waters.

Better Docks, Better Boating
Some of the most beautiful dock facilities in the state of Oregon are planned and developed by the Oregon State Marine Board. This unique state agency is dedicated to making Oregon boating as enjoyable as possible for tourists and residents alike. One of the reasons the facilities are as attractive as they are, is that the Board is an enthusiastic user of kiln-dried, CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated Douglas fir. According to Ron Rhodehamel, Chief Facilities Engineer, the Marine Board at first dabbled with CCA-treated Douglas fir in its standard float module design, but the treatment didn't consistently meet the specified 0.6 retention.
So, since 1988, the Board has usedAt0fPAcertified, CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated Douglas fir in hundreds of float designs. Rhodehamel says these floats have performed beautifully in Oregon's grueling river conditions. He adds that kiln drying has made a big difference in the appearance of their CHEMONITE/ACZAtreated wood in the last couple years.

Treated For Tomorrow's Boaters
The first Chemonite-treated floats, built in 1988, still show no signs of deterioration. Rhodehamel is confident that the hundreds of CHEMONITE/ ACZA-treated floats across Oregon will last for decade s.

It IANY lumber dealers have disIYlcovered that an on-site custom millwork facility can be more than a profitable little side business. Such operations allow companies to differentiate themselves from the competition as custom millwork specialists.
According to owner Bill Lovvorn, custom millwork is the ideal outlet for showcasing the founding principles of Arkansas-based Lovvorn Wholesale Lumber: "providing top quality, highly responsive customer service and
superior products."
"Those principles continue to be our major priority," he says. "We do more than just take your order. We listen to your needs, make suggestions to reduce costs, and monitor your order through plant scheduling, production, and right up until you accept delivery."
If nothing else, a millwork shop gives dealers the opporlunity to provide vastly personalized services to their customers. Countless shops

Wholesaler Snavely Celebrates Centennial
This month, wholesaler Snavely Forest Products celebrates a century in the building materials business and attributes their longevity to innovation. According to Snavely, marketing new products and services that meet the growing demand for specialty lumber and building materials has helped define the company in an industry rife with change over recent years.
"By constantly maintaining our mission of innovation. we continue to differentiate ourselves in the marketplace, which helps position us for long-term growth," said president and c.e.o. Stephen Snavely. "Our industry has faced a number of new market dynamics-from consolidation and regulations to an explosion of new engineered and composite products, so it is an integral part of our business strategy that we continue to adapt to the times while remaining always true to our core business."

That core business is providing customers access to high quality lumber and building materials from around the world. According to Stephen Snavely, "One aspect that defines Snavely Forest Products is the significant amount of resources that go into marketing support and development when introducing new products that serve an ever-expanding market."
The firm was founded in Saginaw, Mi., as Germain Lumber Corp., and moved to Pittsburgh in 1902. C.M. Snavely joined the company in 1954 and in 1958 purchased Germain Lumber Co., which primarily operated as a direct shipping wholesaler. The name changed to Snavely Forest Products in 1911. In 1960, the company established a small distribution facility in Pittsburgh to service Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York. From 1979 through the late 1990s, Snavely continued to expand by opening regional sales and distribution facilities to accommodate the company's growth, including locations in Phoenix, Az.; San Francisco, Ca.; Denver, Co.; Dallas, Tx.; Greensboro,
N.C.; Winter Haven, Fl.; Baltimore, Md.. and Smithton. Pa.
Snavely's product line spans all species of pine and spruce boards in a variety of select and common grades.
In addition, Snavely markets
Kimberly Bay Pine, a select plantation-grown pine with excellent application properties which has helped to position Snavely International as a leader in providing environmentally sound products. The product has received Forest Stewardship Council certification. In fact, plantation grown, recycled or reconstituted wood products now account for more than
lOTo of the company's $200 million in annual sales.
While pine has traditionally defined Snavely with customers, the company's core products also include engineered wood products, wood polymer composite decking, vinyl fencing and railine. and custom exterior doors.
They're stiffer, straighter and stronger than lumber or composite products. They're engineered to meet even the most stringent building codes. They virtually eliminate waste and helo cut labor costs. And here's the best part: we can precision manufacture and precut components to your exact specifications. That's why we're such an important part of so many other companies'products.

Fire Chars N.M. Home Center
An early morning fire caused major damage at Hacienda Homes Center, Espaflola, N.M.
Investigators suspect arson after finding a charred swath of cement and traces of an accelerant.
The blaze apparently began in a lumber storage area about 4 a.m. July 23. Flames soon spread, burning two nearby homes and killing seven horses in a barn. An eighth horse, frightened by flames, ran onto an adjacent highway, where it was struck by a car and killed.
Nearly 40 firefighters battled the blaze. "We could see the fire all the way across town," said fire chief Ray Wolf. "It was burning probably 40 to 50 feet into the air."
Vandals Hit ldaho Firm Twice
Vandals twice struck the property of Bennett Lumber Products, Princeton, Id., causing nearly $10,000 in damage.
On the first occasion in June, trespassers entered the mill and drove a contractor's logging truck to nearby private property, where they knocked down several trees before drivins the truck into a pond.
Four days later, trespassers broke a lock on the same truck and then drove it through a stand of l0-year-old, 15ft.-tall trees at a Bennett plantation. Fifteen trees were knocked down and a gate valued at $2,500 was destroyed.
Police suspect one of the vandals was injured because blood was found in the cab of the logging truck.
Freres Gets Pine Rock Sale
Freres Lumber Co., Lyons, Or., has purchased the Pine Rock Timber Sale in Oregon's upper Molalla River from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
The $766,468 sale, which is expected to yield 5.6 million bd. fr. from 303 acres, encompasses mainly 80-year-old Douglas fir.
Originally the sale was cleared for clear cutting, but the BLM has since designated the parcel for commercial thinning. Pine Rock was originally up for sale last year, but was delayed for further review.
The harvest, which will require Freres to do some helicopter yarding to limit road construction and protect soil, must be completed within three years. This is the first timber sale by the BLM in Clackamas Countv. Or.. in two years.
Talpx Pulls Plug On Exchange
Talpx Inc., one of the leading ecommerce market service providers to the forest products industry, has discontinued operations.
T,llrx president Jim Olmedo attributed the closure to a "challenging economic environment and reduced capital spending industrywide."
Although Telpx's Web site went offline soon after the July 12 decision to shut down, Olmedo expected the member exchange to remain open until mid-August.
Since its first electronic lumber transaction in April 1999, Ter-px developed a selling base that included nearly 407o of lumber production and l57o of panel production, as well as a buyer base of 1,500 locations.
C.C. Crow Publications. Portland. Or., which was acquired by TeI-rx last year, will continue to operate.
Earlier this year, Talrx helped Cox Industries, Orangeburg, S.C., develop the industry's first private branded exchange, coXchange, which went live July 20. Cox's Mike Johnson said the changes at Talpx "will slow us down," since they may require another company to host and support the site.

Bamboo Building Products Arrive
As builders and architects strive to meet customer demands for an even wider selection of building materials in the home, Chinese bamboo has begun emerging as a viable wood substitute.
Bamboo, which is technically a grass and not a tree, has long been used in Asia, but is just now emerging in the U.S. as flooring, paneling and plywood. But the question for many wholesalers and lumberyards is why sell bamboo?
Daniel Smith, Smith & Fong Co., South San Francisco, Ca., which manufactures and distributes bamboo building products under the trade name Plyboo, says bamboo's unique grain patterns and its innate strength that set it apart.
"Bamboo flooring is twice as stable as oak flooring and is installed using the exact same procedures and tools as traditional hardwood flooring," said Smith.
He also points out that bamboo products are specified by three distinct, growing market segments: "green" builders and homeowners, since only the bamboo stalks are harvested, not the root system; those attracted to bamboo's unusual grain patterns, and those he describes as "bamboo nuts."
Although bamboo flooring tends to be more expensive than traditional hardwoods, Ann Knight of bamboo manufacturer TimberGrass, Bainbridge Island, Wa., emphasized that it more than compares to wood flooring. "Bamboo flooring outperforms traditional flooring materials in durability and hardness," she said. "lt's 25Vo harder than oak and l2Va harder than maple."
Bamboo is hollow in the center with its outer walls generally an inch thick at the base. During the manufacturing process, a flat strip is milled from the core of the wall and then boiled in a solution to kill lingering pests.
The strips are then kiln-dried and finally laminated edge-to-edge to produce, for example, a single-ply panel.
Smith cautions that, contrary to popular belief, bamboo is not designed to be placed in high moisture areas such as bathrooms. Although it is twice as stable as oak, it will still warp and buckle if exposed to too much moisture. Builders should adhere to North American Flooring Manufacturers Association standards when using the product.

Although flooring tends to hold the largest share of the bamboo market, plywood panels with an MDF core or solid plywood core are steadily growing.
Smith said that bamboo has so far been strong around major urban areas such as Seattle, Wa.; Los Angeles and San Francisco, Ca., and New York City, but he notes that recent interest in Texas indicates a growing acceptance of this exotic import nationwide.
TimberGrass's Knight agrees that the awareness of bamboo as a building product is growing. "Bamboo has great potential as awareness grows in the U.S., of this fantastic material, its superior strength, stability and renewability as a resource," added Knight.

FBI Nabs Depot Scam Trio
Three illegal Irish nationals may face federal charges and deportation after beins arrested in June for
allegedly scamming Home Depots across the nation of approximately $400.000.
Arrested in San Leandro, Ca., John Hay, 55; Linda Broderick, 48, and Anthony Davenport, 46, apparently toured the country in a van and a26-ft. trailer for which they paid cash.
According to San Leandro police, the trio replaced Depot bar codes with homemade forgeries that rang up items at a significant discount. They then returned the items for the full price, netting themselves a lucrative cash refund. In January the suspects moved to gift certificates after Depot stopped issuing cash for returns.
Police say that Home Depots in San Leandro, Emeryville, Livermore,
Pleasanton, Hayward and Union City,
Ca., lost a total of $10,000, in addition to another $8,000 bilked from Contra Costa County, Ca., stores.
In addition to Home Depots in the South, the trio hit stores in Colorado, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
"It's a brilliant scam, but the big thing about it is that they made the money in seven months," said San Leandro police detective Kathy Pickard. "Thejust got really big, fast."
Officials speculate the scam dates back to October 2001.
Police have seized a total of $750,000 in Canadian and U.S. bank accounts.
Ecuador Deports " Butterf ly"
Activist Julia "Butterfly" Hill, who previously spent two years atop a Pacific Lumber Co.-owned redwood tree, was deported from Ecuador after her arrest for protesting an oil pipeline, according to an environmental group.
"She was taken very violentlY in the morning to the airport, escorted by l0 police officers and then forced to board a plane to Panama," said a fellow protester.
Police arrested Hill and eight Ecuadoreans while they protested outside the Quito office of Occidental Petroleum, a member of the consortium building a 300-mile pipeline that cuts through a nature reserve.
Hill climbed to fame five years ago by camping in a Northern California old-growth redwood she called "Luna" to keep it from being harvested. She came down in 1999, and Palco vowed to spare the tree.

Ft tlv the end of last year, all 2.3 million acres of Boise's U.S. timberlands had undergone intensive third-party environmental audits. The results? Our lands were certified as meeting or even exceeding all SFl" Standards. Now. we're working toward new and even higher standards recently adopted by the SFI program. That's one way of pursuing our goal of continuous improvement in forestry practices. Another way is through our own Forest Stewardship Program, which uses these audits and an advisory council of independent exoerts to recommend further improvements.
Our efforts to ensure the protection of wildlife, plants, and soil, and water and air quality are now certified to be working. Of equal importance, in the past 10 years, timber growth on our lands has exceeded harvests by 9o/o on average. That means you can continue to look to Boise for quality wood products from healthy, wel l-managed forests now and into the future.

Cypress Millwork Makes lts Stand
Despite a continuing trend away fiom wood siding, more people are putting cypress back inside their homesfbr moulding, paneling and other interior applications.
Although cypress is best known for exterior uses, one well known manufacturer thinks the wood's aesthetic and machining properties are such that he wouldn't mind if all cypress were used indoors.
"Cypress is beginning to recapture markets it lost 20 years ago," says Tom Reke, Coastal Lumber Co., Weldon, N.C. "We're excited to see more and more people viewing it for applications other than as a workhorse for exteriors. They see how well it finishes and appreciate its natural beauty. They like the lighter, airier color, which is a very hot trend right now. And, it mills well."
Agrees Donald Elder, Elder Forest Products, Crowley, La.: "Cypress is a moderately hard wood, inherently stable. It glues well, sands and planes excellently, and, of course, you can stain it or finish it much nicer than cedar or redwood because it doesn't have that dark color. Millwork manufacturers like it because whereas other species are having to ship shorter lengths, we can ship longer lengths."

Reke attributes the trend, in part, to "the cedar situation. Cypress is price competitive."
The resurgence has been eye-opening, especially for consumers, says Reke. "You ask the average Joe, and he thinks cypress is extinct or protected. He doesn't realize how much of a good selection is available," Reke says.
Elder also cites competitive pricing and workability as key factors in cypress' growth. Elder Forest Products, which uses cypress for moulding blanks, recently intro-

duced special kits to boost cypress use among millwork and furniture manufacturers.
"Let's say it takes 40 pieces to make one item," Elder explains. "We put those 40 pieces together in a kit. Every component is guaranteed 1007o usable. The kit eliminates so much work for our industrial accounts that one of our customers on the West Coast iust shut down his saws and his sanders."
Northwest Mill lmports Kiwi Pine
Concerned about the continued shortage of domestic ponderosa pine, one Oregon sawmill is betting that New Zealand radiata pine may fill the timber vacuum.
Ochoco Lumber Co., John Day, will receive its first shipment of one half million board feet of radiata pine this month as part of a week's trial run. If the initial run is successful, the company plans to import 2.5 million bd. ft. a month from a Fletcher Forests-headed consortium.
Ochoco's John Shelk said getting ponderosa pine has been difficult for Oregon sawmills since logging restrictions in state forests were implemented three years ago.
Since that time, approximately 90 sawmills have closed in the state, including one of Ochoco's own last August.
Although usually grown outside of the U.S., radiata pine is a native American species. Currently, Chilean radiata pine accounts for most of the product's presence in the U.S.
"Increasingly radiata pine is being used and accepted by U.S. window and door manufacturers," said Shelk. "They would rather have ponderosa pine, but if ponderosa pine is not available, then radiata pine's their next choice."
For the moment the company remains cautious, knowing that other mills have had trouble guaranteeing imports of
using steel
New Zealand pine.
"We believe thatT5Vo will be cut up into windows and doors in central Oregon," said company president Bruce Daucsavage. "The other 25Vo, we're going to have to be innovative."
Radiata pine is a quick growing species that produces a board less stable than ponderosa pine. It is also a young tree and can present more drying problems than other pines.
Fletcher Forests is now involved in two joint ventures with U.S. companies.

Depot Name For LA Stadium
Home Depot has paid $70 million for the naming rights to a new soccer and tennis complex to be built in Carson, Ca.
The $130 million facility, to be known as the Home Depot National Training Facility, will include a 27,000-seat stadium for the Los Angeles Galaxy pro soccer team and a 13,000-seat tennis stadium, a track stadium and a cycling velodrome.
Home Depot inked the deal with sports and entertainment firm Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Staples Center and Regal Cinemas.
Home Depot officials hope the
deal will open the door for its wholesale maintenance subsidiary, Apex Building Supply.
"We have opportunities to extend the business relationship," said Depot's Hugh Miskel. "We could supply the Staples Center or maybe the Regal Cinemas network."
The contract with AEG also contains a provision that the entertainment group must buy $30 million worth of building products from Home Depot for the construction of the complex.
This is the first time Home Depot has attached its name to a sports arena.

Lumber Trucks Get Patriotic
Building on a company tradition of theme-painted trucks, Timber Products, Springfield, Or., has debuted two new trucks with a patriotic theme.
"After 9-l l, our managers, owners, and employees decided we wanted to do something to share the patriotic spirit," said Timber Products' Roger Rutan.
The company's Central Point trucking subsidiary, TP Trucking, has rwo painted truck and trailer rigs adorned with large American flags. One of the rigs has "United We Stand" written over the flag; the other states, "Stand Firm, Stand Tall, Stand Together."
"It's our way of trying to express an understanding and awareness of the fabric of America," Rutan said. "Our country has been attacked, and at the end of the day, unity is what it is all about."
One of the trucks left for New York City July 16 after picking up a load of
specialty plywood at the company's Grants Pass, Or., mill. The final destination is a DC in the Bronx.
The company emphasized the rigs are not marketing gimmicks to capitalize on current patriotic passion, pointing out that only a small company logo appears on the rear of the truck.

Custom Millwork

we'll gladly grind a knife ro your specifications and shape the lumber of your choice."
Although it can match any profile desired, Stark Lumber, Denver. Co.. stresses that it has nearly 100 patterns on hand. Offering "the most extensive and unique selection of stocked wood mouldings in Colorado" helps save customers time and money.

Among the dozens of added services it offers, Southern Lumber & Millwork, Charleston, S.C., provides free 6-inch-long samples cut from any of its stock mouldings or sidings.
Forester Moulding & Lumber, Leominster, Ma., also uses samples to inspire customerst the company gives out a set of random 3- to 4-inch samples, 10 to 12 profiles in all.
Tague Lumber, Philadelphia, Pa., has used high-end custom millwork as a foothold to maintain the business of residential builders. "They provide us with a lot of the trim and window moldings and things like that," said customer Robert Ayerle, Parec Homes. "Any lumberyard can do custom millwork for you, but they put
out a really high-quality trim, and they get it to you when you need it. That makes a huge difference from our standpoint."
And, explains George Bateman, president of wholesaler Bateman Brothers, Woodbury, N.J., "if you get the millwork job, you tend to get the rest of the house, too."
In addition to six retail yards, Mill Creek Lumber & Supply, Tulsa, Ok., owns Wood Systems, an architectural millwork house in Tulsa that works in custom architectural fabrication, and specializes in one-of-a-kind items.
In-house estimators and draftsmen work with builders, contractors and homeowners on custom projects such as staircases, custom mouldings, custom entry units, cabinets, corporate boardrooms, and reception desks.
Mill Creek has also been assembling and pre-hanging wood and steel doors for more than 50 years. Each year, the company produces over 3,000 wood exterior doors. 10.000 steel exterior doors and 40,000 wood and "Masonite-type" interior doors.
Over the last few years, Mcllvain Lumber, Marcus Hook, Pa., increasingly has specialized in hardwood mouldings, helping to differentiate
itself from commodity-oriented competitors such as 84 Lumber. High quality millwork, explains president Alan Mcllvain, "is an expensive product, so you want it to be seen. It's not judged on its durability or strength, but really on its aesthetic value. So in that sense it's a specialty item, and it is typically sold through a privately owned business like ours."
That's where the specialist's expertise comes into play. "You may look at a board and think of it as beautiful, with a knothole here and the grain going a certain way:' Mcllvain notes. "But with our experience we are able to say, 'No, that won't look good.' It's because of this experience that we are well-regarded for having that judgment."
Millwork specialists realize that their businesses truly ride on their reputations. "Quality millwork" has been the rallying cry of Burnett & Sons Mill & Lumber, Sacramento, Ca., since its inception in 1869. That's not likely to change any time soon. Along with the addition of modern computerized machinery, an active training and apprenticeship program helps preserve century-old disciplines of the craft.
