Asbestos Forces USG To File

USG Corp. has filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy to manage the growing asbestos litigation costs of its united States Gypsum co. subsidiary.

Also filing Chapter l l were USG's major domestic subsidiaries, including

United States Gypsum Co., USG Interiors, and L&W Supply Corp., but not its international operations.

USG reportedly is the eighth company in the last 18 months-and 27th in the last two decades-that has been forced to file Chapter I I to resolve asbestos claims.

Since 1994, U.S. Gypsum has been named in more than 250,000 asbestosrelated personal injury claims, and paid over $450 million to manage and resolve related litigation. The company has received 22,000 new claims since the beginning of this year.

USG also announced it has received a commitment for up to $350 million in debtor-in-possession financing from JP Morgan Chase, helping fund operations during the restructurlng process.

Honsador Expands In Kona

Honsador Lumber Corp., Kapolei, Hi., has purchased the assets of Cameli Construction Supply, a masonry and drywall dealer next door to its Kailua-Kona, Hi., yard.

Barbara Cameli, who founded Cameli Construction Supply in 1983, has joined Honsador's expanded Kona branch as product manager, overseeing masonry and drywall. Honsador operates five sales locations in Hawaii.
