A New Beginning

Simply put, you hold in your hands either The Merchant Magazine or Building Products Digest, two sister industry magazines with almost 95 combined years of publishing history behind them and 17,000 monthly readers.

As David Cutler announced last month, he decided to retire in March after 39 years. He has made many friends for life in this industry who have asked me to wish him well. Having had lunch with him recently, I can say he is fully enjoying his new life.

I would like to thank David as his wife, Marti, for their help throughout the transition and for setting a great model and standard to follow. David had great integrity and concern for this industrywith one philosophy, to assist our readers and advertisers whenever they needed help. David will be a part of us for a long time to come, and I am pleased to say his name will continue to be associated with our publishing family as Publisher Emeritus.

As many of you have noticed, the magazine has not skipped a beat these past months. In fact recent issues are as strong as ever. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to serve and support this industry, and continue its lengthy tradition.

Nowadays it's hard to find a magazine that can be everything to everybody, but I can assure you, we will continue to go the extra mile to ensure that both magazines continue to be the best they can be, and a reason to be read from cover to cover, and shared around your company.

We will never be happy with status quo. Our goal will be simple: to find reasons why our readers and advertising partners will read us each and every month. We will respect our heritage and traditions while moving forward.

To that end, we want to hear from you. Let us hear your feedback. Let us help you promote your company, your products and your associations. Let us hear about your expansion plans or your new people. Call me at (949) 852-1990, Fax me at 949-852-0231, e-mail me at ajoakes@ aol.com, or send us a letter at 4500 Campus Dr., Suite 480, Newport Beach, Ca.92660.

We are here to help you and serve this great industry by giving you the best communication tool in the market and showing you the industry and its people in a way you would not expect from a magazine. Continue to let us know how we are doing. Thank you for your trust. We will always remember to earn it again and again.

f\OST effectiveness is the latest \-zbuzzword for ensineered wood products. WillamettJlndustries and Louisiana-Pacific have become just the latest EWP producers to introduce more economical I-joist products.

"I-joist use has grown significantly," said Willamette Industries' Larry Foley, who has been selling engineered wood for nearly 30 years. "They had been primarily for custom homes, but now they're becoming common for tract and entry level home construction. So, we've been asked by our suppliers and their customers to develop a more cost effective joist for shorter spans."

The result was the SJ- 120 StrucJoist, which features a new l1/2" wide flange configuration in depths of 9-112" and ll-7 /8" According to Mike Hunsaker, general sales manager for engineered wood, "For years, Willamette has offered the most extensive engineered wood product line in the industry, and the creation of the SJ-120 reinforces our commitment to delivering high quality products that meet the construction needs of our customers."

Making EWP more affordable

tem a more solid feel and making it less subject to the vibrations experienced with some narrow flange joist systems. Making the flanges less deep uses less wood fiber. driving costs out of the manufacturing process and allowing producers to price the products lower.

The trend began about two years ago with the introduction of GeorgiaPacific's GPI 40 and GPI 60 wide Wood I Beam joists and Boise Cascade's Advantage series.

G-P's joists feature 2-112"-wide LVL flanges, designed as an alternative to ordinary dimension lumber floor joists and narrow flange I-joists. The 2-1/2" wide flanges are up to 66Vo wider than narrower flanges offered in competing product lines, and are designed to provide excellent stability and consistent performance.

"Our primary goal is to maintain the level of quality and performance our customers have come to expect from Trus Joist, and to supply that quality at a competitive price into the 2lst century," says TJ president Tom Denig.

Single product lines for both TJI joists and Microllam LVL headers and beams are available throughout North America, eliminating past differences between products using eastern or western timber species. The same products therefore can be designed into building products regardless of the geographic location of the lumberyard, architect's office or jobsite.

TJI joists were renamed to reflect the change; in addition, the span and load capabilities for both thejoists and beam products have been slightly modified from previous versions.

our suppliers and their customers

develoo a more cost-effective joist for shorter spans."

In addition to the SJ- 120, Willamette's existing 150 and 250 StrucJoist series will see similar flange feature changes to eliminate confusion with previous product lines. The new series will now be called the l50W and the 250W.

Similarly, Louisiana-Pacific has added several LVL flange I-joists and recently converted its plant in Red Bluff, Ca., to produce both solid sawn and LVL joists, according to Dennis D'Amato, western regional sales manager, Rocklin, Ca.

The new LPI 200 and 225 series joists have l-3/4" wide flanges and come in depths of 9-l/2,11-'7/8" and 14". LPI300 joists have 2-5116" wide flanges and depths of 9-l/2",ll-718", 14" and16".

Wider LVL flanges give builders broader nailing and gluing surfaces for subfloors while providing added support. The wide flange also adds mass to the new beams, giving the floor sys-

"Dealers that carry our full line of wide flange Wood I Beam joists will be better able to meet builder needs because of design and value properties that make them the appropriate choice for mainstream residential construction," said Gary Hughes, engineered lumber account manager for GeorgiaPacific.

Boise Cascade's BCI Advantage series joists feature a flange depth of l-5116" instead of the standard l-l/2". "We take a couple of veneers off the depth and use the material for the width," says product engineer Jeff Olson. "And since we're not using as much veneer, we can use a higher grade for flange stock. The allowable design values stay about the same."

The company has been producing the Advantage products at its White City, Or., facility and in May also began manufacturing them at its Alexandria, La., plant.

Trus Joist, meanwhile, has been streamlining its series of TJI joists and Microllam LVL beams and headers to make them easier for builders, architects and retailers to use and sell.

The adjustment was caused by the declining quality of wood veneer available from traditional timber resources used in the manufacture of Microllam LVL.

Roseburg Forest Products took a slightly different approach to the concept of producing affordable engineered products. They are focused on manufacturing efficiency as the key to producing a more cost efficient product for the builders. Bob Berch, EWP sales mgr., says, "Economics is the name of the game. Our new EWP facility was designed and built based on the concept that Roseburg would be the world's most efficient producer of affordable engineered wood products regardless of their size and shape." The new facility produces Iioists and LVL.

for glulams in upscale home construction

D)ETAILERS report that glued I\laminated timbers and beams are gaining a larger share of the luxury home market, as more builders switch to glulams for headers, floor beams and ridge beams.

"Upscale home builders are specifying more glulams because owners of these houses often spend a lot of time at the job site," says Roy Deering, Fort Worth Lumber Co., Fort Worth, Tx. "These owners like the clean, straight look of glulams, and they don't like to see solid sawn timbers with wane and knots."

Deering says that glulams such as Anthony Power Beams and Power Headers are becoming more popular for framing in 5,000- and 6,000-sq. ft. homes because of their strength fbr long spans, competitive price, and faster one-piece construction at the job site.

Many builders see new engineered

wood framing innovations on the Internet and at trade shows and they come to us to get more details," Deering says. Most of the glulam beams supplied by Fort Worth Lumber are cambered to avoid the

was one of the first to offer engineered wood to its builder customers. and today it is known for its large inventories of I-joists, LVL and glulam beams as well as its dedication to customer service.

Quarles Lumber's Lonny Goolsby says, "We're selling a ton of Anthony glulam beams, especially for the larger two-story homes, which are popular in this area. This is not a big roof truss market for our company, but it's definitely a growth area for glulam headers and floor girders. I can't tell you the last time we shipped solid sawn 2x12s for headers."

Goolsby says they rely on the Boise Cascade distribution yard for assistance with engineering and specs.

neered wood.

Most builders obtain their engineered wood from retail dealers, but more truss manufacturers are also including glulam beams as a part of their component package.

Sonny Loredo, Loredo Truss Co., Austin, Tx., says he ships a lot of Anthony glulam Power Beams along with the floor and roof trusses he supplies to his builder customers. This is especially true in the larger, custom homes.

"Glulam floor beams and headers are a natural part of the truss package that goes to thejob site," Loredo says. "Our builders like the built-in camber of Anthony glulams because they avoid the deflection you sometimes get with conventional solid sawn beams. Being able to supply glulams and trusses together makes us a onestop source for floor, roof and header framing."

Loredo spends a lot of time at job sites, answering builder questions about trusses and glulams. "Our builders like the fact that glulams are solid, one-piece framing, which saves construction time because they don't have to nail pieces of lumber together for headers," he says.

Sierra Point Lumber. Brisbane. Ca., has become a dominant retailer in the Bay Area by specializing in the engineered wood market. Many contractors on their long list of Pro customers have switched to high-strength glulams in place of laminated veneer lumber, solid sawn timbers and other glulams.

Sierra Point Lumber's Dennis Finney says they are shipping increased volumes of Power Beams every year for both single and multifamily construction. "We don't really have to do much promotion of the

Power Beam now because they are well known to architects and engineers who specify them on the construction plans," he notes.

Sierra Point Lumber buys most of its glulams from Georgia-Pacific Distribution. G-P's Mike Griffin says, "Demand for the Power Beam is growing steadily, and we are now supplying it to hundreds of Western dealers. We think it is the best engineered wood product on the market."

Anthony laminated beams are available in I-joist depths and are cost competitive with LVL and solid sawn beams. Their controlled l2Vo moisture content makes them less vulnerable to twisting and warping than solid timbers at l9Vo moisture content, according to dealers interviewed by Anthony. This helps to reduce callbacks.

Boise Cascade Distribution, Dallas, Tx., reports a growing demand for glulams, particularly for garage door headers. Boise Cascade's Johnny Watkins says dealers like the 2600 Fb strength and camber of Anthony Power Beam headers (LVL beams are not cambered).

"We ship a lot of 16' 9" and 18' 9" glulam garage door headers to our retail customers who formerly sold solid sawn, double 2xl2s for headers," Watkins says.

Boise Cascade sponsors product information meetings on glulams and other engineered wood products for its retailer customers.

Dealers, as well, regularly hold special promotion/education events to inform specifiers and customers about load capacities, span tables and applications for glulams (see box at right for sample ways to promote glulams).

How Dealers lncrease Glulam Sales

Acting on the theory that "twothirds of promotion is motion," dealers are reaching out to their glulam beam customers with events such as:

Evolving lumber business helps fuel growth of I

transloadi

f\HANGES in the lumber and \-. building materials industry have fostered an increasing reliance on transloading. Transloads, as a result, are rapidly expanding in numbers, size and diversity of products and commodities handled in all geographic areas.

Transloading of commodities between modes of transportation is not new. It has been around since sailing ships first transloaded trade goods to horsedrawn vehicles for distribution to warehouses for ultimate dispersal to consumers. What is new is the volume, variety and value added by transloading. Transloads arise out of needs determined by consumers in supply chains for creation of time/ place/utility. This means putting goods where needed, in the form and quantity needed, when needed.

Manufacturers produce in large quantities to minimize costs. Shipping quantities are matched to the economic size of rail or truck equipment to "surge" storage facilities close to the market where goods are distributed to retailers in smaller quantities for sale and consumption. As our standards ol living increase with economic conditions, the desire and/or need for a greater variety of goods made available in a more personalized form, quantity and price increases.

As our economy migrated from agricultural to industrial, retailing migrated from a country general store or mail order catalogs having an assortment of different commodities but limited choices in categories to serve a broad geographic area. If the proprietor didn't have it, he would order it, sometimes taking weeks to deliver. People migrated to the city during the industrial revolution, and as their disposable personal income and their standard of living increased,

they demanded a greater choice and selection of goods located closer. Hence, the "specialty store" was born (shoes, clothing, grocery, candy stores, etc.). The idea of the general store expanded into department stores, but served a clientele closer. As inner cities grew outward and workers commuted, parking problems grew and mass transit flourished. Consumers made a choice again for less variety and selection or availability of a given product in favor of proximity. This contributed to the rise in suburban shopping centers comprised of grocery stores that offered basic hardware and pharmaceuticals and large discount stores with departments having limited selections. Now consumers demand a broader variety of products made available instantly via the computer (e-tailing) with maximum personalized value which they can pay for instantly through credit cards and electronic fund transfers.

To supply them and remain competitive wholesale distributors must help retailers keep inventory to a minimum, and in some instances help their customers manage their real time inventory by replenishing stocks within hours in economic order quantities and mixes required by retailers and their customers.

Nowhere have these dynamic changes in supply chain management been more evident and pronounced than in building products.

Lumber merchandi sers now demand "super tallies" of mixes of a variety of products such as panels, dimension, boards and treated lumber delivered to them in hours in Less than Truckload (LTL) shipments. Retail lumber yards previously had to buy from mills or wholesalers in rail carload quantities (CL) or later, truckload quantities (TL) in product mixes related to the mix of products and quality of logs as they came from the woods. This sometimes took weeks to deliver from the time they were ordered.

Deregulation of transportation has caused railroads to rationalize and downsize their organizations and service to their customers and have turned their attention to large volume consignors. Growth of transloads in diversity and geographical dispersion has evolved as a direct result of a paradigm shift of these commercial economic forces.

Transloaders have grown in size and diversity in the number of commodities handled and customers served. Concurrent with this growth inwardly and outwardly has been their understandins of and service to cus-

tomers' needs, together with a creative penchant (perhaps related to their size and maturity of their business) to creatively and innovatively package or bundle customer specific products and services to flexibly meet the needs of their customers.

Conversely, Class I railroads have become less flexible with their behemoth increases in size through mergers characterized by a proclivity to concentrate on the core cost-saving economics of lower-rated unit train movements of low value, semi-finished products between main line points. The spin-off of feeder branch lines created hundreds of shortline railroads and trucklines that have captured a large share of higher-rated, value-added merchandise traffic.

Shortline railroads use transloading and their individual customized service for their smaller customers to restore business lost by large Class I Railroads. A significant amount of the business growth and profitability of these shortlines has been not only from a return to responsiveness in meeting customers' needs, but by strategic selective engagement of locating transloads strategically on their lines to expand business and to draw business beyond the capacity of shippers or receivers on their lines.

Some transloads in the building products industry were spawned captively by the likes of Lowe's, which created its own destination reloads in the East where they were deemed adequate to serve their stores in the manner required. Manufacturers such as Boise Cascade and Georgia-Pacific set up captive reloads and distribution centers in destination markets to serve customers in mega markets. Other manufacturers utilized public reloads at origin and/or destination to get to or from a competitive railhead quicker and use the transloaders to add value by changing the mix delivered to their customers to super tallies, repackaging private label goods, and bar coding.

Other transloaders were truckers who integrated vertically from merely cross docking from car to truck at "team tracks" to providing warehouse or yard storage and other value-added services. Others were public warehousemen who vertically integrated into providing trucking through for hire or, in many instances, merged or acquired trucking of their own to bundle one-stop-shopping of custom tailored value-added services and oav-

ment of bills for their customers. Railroads such as CN, CPR, BNSF, P, NS and CSX have in recent years attracted transloaders to their lines and have even invested capital to create large mega facilities. Most Class I railroads now have separate business units in their organizations to market transloading.

Some successful transloaders who began with one transload at one point on a railroad with a single commodity have expanded geographically to other points on other railroads, handling additional commodities. Notable examples of these transloads include Savage Industries, Bulkmatic, Matlack. Reload. Inc. Warehouse Specialists, National Distribution Services, Budway and Specialized Rail Services.

Other reloaders such as International Reload, Christina Lake, B.C., and Emons Logistics actually acquired their own railroads to provide modal integration of transloading services.

Other transloaders in the building products industry such as Mountain West, Missoula, Mt., and Orville Reman & Reload, Orville, Wa., work strictly for wholesalers. They bring in cars of lumber for cut-to-size (remanning), repacking, storage. prime-coating, bar coding and sending it out by

What is new is the volume, variety and value added by transloading.

rail or truck as required by customers.

Transloaders and manufacturers involved in value-added supply chains of products in transit were the last to feel the pinch of economic downturns. Closed were the cost-oriented supply chains that focused only on reducing costs or shipping direct from mill.

Several transloaders started out unloading rebar and grew in their ability, volume wise, to unload entire trainloads in 24 hours. Budway, Keep On Truckin', Transload Ltd. and Ancon have successfully expanded horizontally to handle other metal products as well as wood products.

Many transloaders of paper products have expanded their number of facilities, as well as commodities, to include wood pulp to be more responsive to a small core of customers already served. Not only have they expanded physical facilities to meet a growing need for transloading, but a growing number of products and commodities in geographically dispersed markets.

Transloaders are led by small businessmen characterized as opportunistic risk takers who grow and thrive on building a network of improved relationships with stakeholders (owners, creditors, suppliers, customers and carriers.) Transloaders are hired hands who concentrate on efficiently transloading to storage or between modes goods entrusted to them by customers. Transloaders do not purchase, sell, own or profit from trading goods, but from adding value to goods traded by the intermodal or

closed or offset top flange, concealed flange, saddle hanger, ridge hanger, or combinations of hangers welded together.

Occasionally, custom items prove so popular that they become permanent additions to the catalog. "Some of our new products are developed from feedback from our salespeople or from our engineers, such as customers continually asking for a longer strap on a particular hanger,"

"We do a lot of custom work, not from scratch, but modifying catalog items," says Simpson Strong-Tie Co.'s Richard Chapman. "We offer about 70 different options, such as offsetting a saddle to a different position on a hanger or bending a hanger at an 847o angle instead of the standard 45Va;'

Hanger options include a skewed and/or sloped seat, sloped, open,

Chapman notes. "We're beginning a whole series of screws that replace bolts for hold downs aimed specifically at solving customer needs."

Instead of drilline a bolt into a stud, contractors can install Simpson's Strong-Drive screws with a screwgun, reportedly creating a faster, stronger connection because less wood is removed. The connectors (such as the HDQ holdown, CCQ column cap, and CBQ column base) end with Q for "quick."

Chapman explains: "We're always looking for a constant balance between performance and strength for the engineer and quickness of installation for the contract. The engineer doesn't care how long it takes to install as long as it performs well, and the contractor doesn't care how well it performs as long as it installs quickly. These new screws accomplish both."

As well. USP Lumber

Connectors has developed standard connectors after receiving inquiries to produce the products on a custom basis. Customers who can't find what they want among the standard offerings call USP's technical assistance department. Many requests can be met simply by tweaking a standard connector.

Those with more uncommon needs may be asked to provide a sketch of the framing situation, along with loading requirements. According to Paul Pope, USP's engineering department then evaluates the proposed application and specifications desired to see if an entirely new product can be custom made. If possible, the engineers will design a connector and supply calculated structural ratings. Upon customer approval, connectors can be fabricated, packaged and shipped, usually within five working days-the same length of time as for specialty versions of existing products.

NEW PRODUCTS, such as Simpson Strong-Tie's THAISUR adjustable hanger (above) and USP's Seat Cleat l-joist hanger (top right), may be inspired by customer demand.

1989. I wrote an article lent it led "The B orates Are Coming!" for this magazine. It wasn't until 1994 that inorganic boron was introduced into the mainland U.S. under the brand name of Pac Bor and promoted for use as sill plate in residential construction.

The borates are here!

Today Pac Bor has an estimated 9OVo market share of residential sill plate in Arizona and an estimated 60Vo market share in the Los Angeles Basin. Market share in Northern California and Las Vegas is growing as users become aware of the benefits of using Pac Bor. Today, 15 wood preserving plants in North America treat with borates.

Industry Standards

Over the last several years, U.S. Borax, wood preservation scientists and Pacific Wood Preserving have worked to include inorganic boron into industry standards. This has involved extensive research, peer scrutiny, and regulatory review of the wood preservative. Today, inorganic boron is listed in the American WoodPreservers Association Standards C3l-99 ("Lumber Used Out of Contact withthe Ground and Continuously Protected from Liquid Water-Treatment by Pressure Processes"). It is also listed in AWPA's P5-00, which describes standards for waterborne preservatives.

AWPA recently introduced a Use Category System in an attempt to simplify the interpretation of the standards. At AWPA's annual meeting in May, inorganic boron was added to Use Category 2, "Interior Construction, Damp Above Ground," and to the "Guide to Treated Wood End Uses." According to AWPA executive v.p. John Hall, the 2001 version of this guide will list inorganic boron in framing interior and sill plate appli-

cations. Until the 2001 standard is published, conflicts between the C standards and the Use Category System will be governed by the C standards.

The borates (identified as disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, the active ingredient) are also promulgated under the International Conference of Building Officials Evaluation Service Evaluation Reports, which are specific to individual wood treaters. Pacific's report is ICBO-ER 4890. Pac Bor also has a Letter of Acceptance from the Division of State Architect Office of Regulation Services (dated September 11, 1997), approving its use in governmental construction (i.e., schools, public buildings). To my knowledge, only Pac Bor has this acceptance letter. Other generic versions of inorganic boron have not received it.

Buyers Beware

Buyers of wood treated with inor-

ganic boron can be confident that they are receiving product that meets industry standards if the products bear an official stamp or end-tag. While this can be confusing because of misleading stamps, end-tags and advertisements by wood treaters who do not follow industry standards, below is a guide on how wholesalers, retail yards, building inspectors and consumers can ensure that they are receiving products that have the industry recommended retention and penetration of preservative, and that the proper manufacturing procedures have been followed:

(1) The Western Wood Preservers Institute developed the CheckMark logo to help West Coast buyers of treated wood quickly determine if products have been inspected by an ALSC accredited, third pafiy agency. (See generic version of stamp below.)

The program requires thirdparty inspection by one of five certified inspection agencies of treated product to assure that AWPA standards are followed. Inspections by agencies not accredited by ALSC are invalid. (It is not necessary to be a WWPI member to participate in the program).

(2) The display of the quality mark of an American Lumber Standard Committee-accredited third party inspection agency. These quality marks and the names of applicable agencies on the West Coast are listed in a separate chart. This ensures that an authorized inspection agency periodically inspects wood produced by this treater to ensure that AWPA standards are being followed.

(3) A stamp or end-tag that references the applicable ICBO-ER relevant to the preservative and species. A sample of a proper ICBO-ER stamp is shown below. Treaters are not authorized to reference an ICBO-ER unless their products are third party inspected by Timber Products Inspection Agency, and unless its specific treating plant has submitted the proper samples and test data to the ICBO Evaluation Service. (No other inspection agency is currently considered valid by the ICBO).

Looking Forward

Pac Bor has proved successful because of its low mammalian and environmental toxicity (California Proposition 65 warnings are not required and Consumer Information Sheets are unnecessary), good yardability (less twisting and warpage), and high degree of efficacy. The treatment's limitation is that it must not be used in unprotected exterior applications or in ground contact.

The use of borate treated wood throughout the house, a standard fea-

b. Carefully review advertisements and literature that list official-sounding regulations, codes and agency approvals, but fail to mark the finished products with appropriate markings.

C. Beware end-tags or stamps that say "Lifetime Warranty" or "Ground Contact," but do not contain one of the quality marks previously discussed. ting their homes apart from other new and existing homes in the marketplace.

Currently, a full line of products from treated lumber and plywood to treated OSB is available to builders so that all the structural components in the house can be made with borate treated products.

Just as I predicted in 1989's "The Borates Are Coming!," the role of borates has continued to grow in the North American wood preservation industry, including use in alternative exterior preservative formulations, and most recently by data supporting their performance in railroad ties.

It appears obvious that as a tool for use in modern wood protection systems, borates may be the most versatile active ingredient available today. The potential range of products is innumerable and end use applications cover the entire spectrum of timber preservation. It can certainly be said that "The Borates are Here!"

Payless Cashways Files Again

Citing an unusually harsh winter and poor 2001 economic conditions, Payless Cashways, Inc. has filed for Chapter I I bankruptcy, its second such action in four years.

A company statement claimed lenders have been restricting the firm's credit, reducing cash availability and delaying vendor payments. This has caused numerous store items to become unavailable, eroding sales even further.

Several corporations have filed claims against the chain, including Georgia-Pacific, which is seeking $7 million in payment, Masco ($2.3 million), General Electric ($1.4 million.)and Black and Decker ($l million.l.

"We are extremely disappointed that we had to take this step," said president and c.e.o. Millard Barron. "However, this convergence of negative factors forced us to take this drastic action on behalf of our customers."

Payless Cashways closed over 40 stores earlier this year, hoping to reduce expenditures and raise cash from sales of the shuttered buildings.

The firm operates 110 retail units, five PCI Builders Resource locations and one Contractor's Supply store throughout l6 states.

Check-Out Home Center's New ldea

Home Depot is introducing new wireless scanners in over 700 stores nationwide that are said to reduce the time customers spend in check-out lines.

"It's a tool being used to complement existing cashiers," said Don Hanison, a company spokesman. "We use it when lines are long and customers are stressed."

An extension of a wireless scanner already used for keeping inventory, the "Unleashed" system enables employees to scan and record purchases while customers wait in line.

Once patrons get to the check-out counter, the cashier electronically retrieves the sales record and the customer pays for their items.

The system reportedly should be in all 1,340 Home Depot stores nationwide by year's end.

Web Site Checks Certified Status

Primary and secondary forest products companies now can apply online for Sustainable Forestry Initiative labeling.

Using a dedicated Web site, sfi.vcompro.com, SFI program participants and label licensees are able to quickly and easily demonstrate they meet SFI program requirements of the on-product label by answering a series of questions regarding the source of raw materials used in manufacturing a wood or paper product.

Once an independent third-party certification audit has been submitted, the program determines if their product earns the SFI program label.

The program, designed by Virtual Compliance, Inc., even calculates complexities such as whether the percentage of raw material on a product-by-product basis meets acceptable sustainability standards to qualify for the SFI program label.

Weyerhaeuser Confident As Willamette Count Continues

More than three weeks after a crucial stockholder vote, Weyerhaeuser Co.'s hostile takeover attempt of Willamette Industries remained undecided.

At presstime, a final tally of the June 7 vote for three Willamette directors still had not been released. If Weyerhaeuser's three nominees are selected, the company would possess a greater bargaining position for the planned acquisition.

Minutes after the shareholder meeting, Weyerhaeuser proclaimed victory.

Weyerhaeuser c.e.o. Steven Rogel said early vote tallies demonstrated a "nice margin-one that's broad enough for us to claim victory."

Willamette countered that the outcome was too close to call. A third party agency was charged with independently counting the votes.

Weyerhaeuser vowed to bow out if it lost the vote. Willamette. however. might not give up the fight as quickly. Both chairman William Swindells and c.e.o. Duane McDougall hinted that if Weyerhaeuser's nominees were elect-

ed, Willamette might resort to its entrenched poison-pill defense. Swindells said he believes Weyerhaeuser nominees would act in the best interest of Willamette shareholders-and realize the merits of Willamette's defensive actions.

If, as expected, the nominees proved uncooperative, they could be marginalized on the nine-member board, at least until next year's annual meeting. "To be quite frank," Swindells said, "they're trying to steal the best company in the industry."

Ironically, months of politicking and posturing, capped by a flurry of expensive newspaper advertising and the emotional shareholder meeting, was followed by weeks of eerie silence by both companies.

Finally, during the last week of June, Rogel visited several Portland reporters and community leaders. He assured them that, if the takeover bid was successful, few Oregonians would lose jobs and Oregon timberlands wouldn't be aggressively logged to pay off debt.

"Willamette doesn't have much fat to trim," he said, explaining that the $300 million Weyerhaeuser expects to save by merging the two firms is an approximation based on "synergies," not staff cuts. Rogel predicted it would take about four years to reduce the additional debt load Weyerhaeuser would have to take on.

He also explained that a merger was in both companies' best interest, since consolidation in the timber industry is necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Housing Boom Hangover Seen

A strong consumer sector in the U.S. economy will keep the nation from slipping into recession, but the construction industry should prepare for a significant slowdown as commercial occupancy rates tumble and the business sector continues to soften, according to a leading economist.

"In the past three to five years, we have been in an extraordinary period," Raymond G. Torto, principal and managing director of Torto Wheaton Research, told a gathering of construction executives. "And the year 2000 was the party that gave us the hangover we are now suffering from. It would be totally incorrect to look back on that three-to-five-year cycle and

expect the economy to come out of its soft landing next year and perform as it has in the past. Totally incorrect."

Torto said the heady days of the late 1990s and the year 2000 experienced "tremendous" growth of about 57o per year in the nation's Gross Domestic Product, a key barometer of economic health with direct correlation to the strength of the real estate industry. The traditional 25-year average GDP growth rate is about three percent annually. Few can accurately predict what the GDP growth rate will be in the future, he said, advising his audience to "buckle down, keep your business in line with reality and your expectations in line with reality."

Torto continued, "What we are telling our clients is that we don't think there will be a recession. and there will be a soft landing. That's because we rate the economy in two sectors, the business sector and the consumer sector, and the business sector is weak and will continue to have very low profit reports through the end of this year. The consumer sector, though, will keep us alive and out of a recession."

A consumer sector strengthened by low interest rates and the Bush admin-

istration's income tax cut and summer rebate will save the economy from recession as more and more people create discretionary income by lowering their mortgage rates through refinancing. "That has a dramatic effect on the economy," Torto said.

The tax cut alone is expected to help pump up the GDP by as much as $75 billion. And, Torto said, the creeping unemployment rate is not seen as a threat ofrecession because it currently stands at 4.4 to 4.5Vo, well below the 5.57o most economists see as the full employment unemployment rate. "Moving from 4.4 to 5 is not a serious problem," he said.

As long as interest rates are favorable, the multi-family and single-family construction sectors will remain strong, Torto said. In fact, many investors have adjusted their portfolios to include more multi-family ownership than ever before.

Government spending is another bright spot on the horizon for the construction industry. "There is a lot of good public construction money out there, and that side of the economy I do not see being adversely affected at all," he observed. "In fact, you could hold out quite well if you can shift your business into the public sector

arena for the next year to 18 months, and then move it back into the private sector. That would be a good strategy, an ultimate strategy, that I would consider."

Overall, Torto noted, "My analysis of where reality is going is a severe slowdown in the construction business over the next 12 months. But if your business plan provides for your expectations and reality to come together, you will have a good year."

Timber Co. Acquisiton A Go

Plum Creek Timber Co.. Seattle. Wa., is proceeding with a nearly yearold agreement to purchase Timber Co. from Georgia-Pacific Corp., Atlanta, Ga., after learning the merger would be tax-free to both firms and their stockholders.

According to Plum Creek, an independent tax counsel determined that G-P could spin off the timberland unit, so it in turn could be sold without any adverse tax implications.

Both companies will seek approval of the deal at Aug. l5 shareholder meetings and anticipate the merger to close by the end of September, making Plum Creek the second-largest private timberland owner in the U.S.

Jerry's Says lt's Not For Sale

Contrary to rumors, 40-year-old Jerry's Home Improvement Center, Eugene, Or., is not for sale, according to owner Dennis Orem.

According to the rumor mill, Lowe's had acquired the firm, a matter that Orem emphatically denies, noting it would make more sense for the chain to build its own store rather than buy his.

"There have not been any offers made," he insists. "Customers have called and asked, 'What happens to our business now that you have been

Although he does not know how the rumor got started, Orem confirmed Lowe's has scouted sites in Eugene and Springfield for a store.

Lowe's spokesperson Suzanne McCoy said Oregon is a state the chain sees room for growth in.

Nardelli Vows Sales Will Rise

At his first shareholders meeting as Home Depot president and c.e.o., Robert Nardelli said he believes tax rebates and lower interest rates will encourage mortgage refinancing, increasing home-improvement spending this year.

Nardelli said the chain has not reached saturation in North America and asserted that he will more than double Depot's annual sales to $100 billion by adding more stores and "raising the roof' on existing sales.

The former GE executive maintained that while consumers have not yet benefited from Federal Reserve rate reductions, he believes the cuts eventually will create a "huge influx

back into the home improvement" sector. He said the extent of the sales recovery will depend on how consumers choose to spend any discretionary income they receive later in the year.

To commemorate the opening of its 100th Texas store, Home Depot unfurled a 25'x30'orange apron on the front of the new 130,000-sq. ft. unit in The Colony, Tx., just north of Dallas.

Two Injury Lawsuits Filed Against Home Depot

A wrongful death lawsuit and a personal injury claim have been filed against a pair of Home Depot units.

The $35 million wrongful death suit faults Depot for not taking security measures prior to the murder of Renee Ramos. 18. who was found dead inside the Manteca. Ca.. store while it was under construction.

The suit alleges the construction site was devoid of fences, barricades or guards, enabling trespassers to enter the building after dark. The store opened last September, several months after Ramos' body was discovered under a pile of insulation, four days after she vanished.

Also named in the suit were three men arrested in Ramos' murder, Ty Eric Lopes, Jacob Lee Silva and Raymond Earl Goans II. Charges against Goans were dismissed; however, the other two men face criminal prosecution. If convicted, both could receive the death penalty.

In the second case, Douglas P. McAdams is seeking over $20,000 in damages, alleging he was injured 4pr1129,2000 when falling lumber hit him as he was shopping at the Twin Falls. Id.. store.

A lawyer for McAdams said his client was ignored by Depot when he requested the matter be settled out of court.

The suit is the second against the store. A wrongful death suit was filed last year after a 3-year-old girl was killed when a countertop fell from a forklift, striking her (see July 2000, p. 38). The case was said to have been settled.

G-P Closes Wallboard Plants

Georgia-Pacific is closing several plants and cutting back operations at other facilities to reduce its gypsum wallboard production capacity in the U.S. and Canada by 45%o.

"Current market conditions for wallboard are forcing us to take action now to close these facilities and reduce our overall production," said A.D. "Pete" Correll, chairman and c.e.o. "These steps are critical for the long-term viability of our wallboard business. Current capacity and pricing levels in the wallboard business are unsustainable and operating our plants at full production is unprofitable for Georgia-Pacific."

G-P is shuttering wallboard plants

in Savannah, Ga.; Long Beach, Ca., and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; indefinitely idling commodity wallboard production lines at Acme, Tx.; Sigurd, Ut., and Blue Rapids, Ks., and reducing operations at its remaining 13 wallboard production facilities to a maximum five-day work schedule.

In addition, its recycled paperboard plant at Delair, N.J., has been put up for sale.

Radicals Admit To Arson

The Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility for setting two separate May 2l fires that ravaged Jefferson Poplar Farms, Clatskanie, Or., and the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture. Seattle. Wa. (see June, p. 35).

The latter blaze caused roughly $3 million in structural damage, while the Oregon fire caused at least $500,000 in damage. No one was injured in either fire.

Hours before ELF's announcement, three logging trucks were set afire in Eagle Creek, Or., although no one claimed responsibility for the incident.

The FBI is said to consider ELF one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the nation.

How to make Just-ln-Time work for Uou... fomplete distribution sErvires - rustomized to gour needs

Just-ln-Time olfers tremendous advantages but is not free. Invariably there are increased transportation and material costs, and hidden liabilities in having to use alternative vendors that seem to fit your J-l-T needs, even though you may prefer the product of another.

The answer is a "buffer," a distribution service that can receive material via any mode, store it if necessary and deliver it on a Just-ln-Time basis. Transportation costs can be held down: inequities in production vs. demand moderated...on-hand plant inventories minimized...and relalionships with vendors continued, and often expanded.

lf you decide that J-l-T is what you want. .. that's your business.

lf you need help to make it happen... that's our business.

We relieve the burden of logistics management by acting as receiver, warehouseman, inventory controller and distributor... and do it more efficiently and cost eflectively.

New EWP plant does it all

oseburg Forest Products recently l\started up its first LVL, I-joist and veneer drying plant-all housed within one 500,000-sq. ft. building on a 70-acre site, creating one of the largest and most technologicallyadvanced engineered wood products operations in North America.

The plant is located in Riddle, Or., within close proximity to RFP's exist-

ing plywood facilities, which will serve as a primary source of veneers for the LVL process. The new facility not only has the capacity to dry its own veneer. but also to manufacture a wide range of laminated veneer lumber for industrial, header, thick billet and flange stock for I-joists.

I-joists will be manufactured in depths ranging from 9-112" to 24" with flange widths from I1/2" to 3-112" wide, in lengths up to 66-l/2 ft.

Allyn Ford, RFP president, set the course to aggressively grow the company. EWP plant manager Dave Vculek, a veteran to EWP manufacturing, explains, "Allyn wanted to improve the vertical integration

of the company's manufacturing to utilize RFP's 750,000 acres of timberland more efficiently." The plant will do just that, since its raw material recoveries reportedly will be the highest in the industry

The plant's vision-to be a preferred employer and a supplier of choice-is taken seriously by the plant's 60 employees, who were selected from over 1,500 applicants. Vculek says, "This crew is the best. I've not had the privilege to work with a better overall team in my entire 30-year manufacturing career."

Vculek adds, "Mr. Ford has afforded the plant the best available equipment in North America. The entire plant is networked."

From the production floor to the administration office, the facility is wired for control and communication. At the production level, the company has total electronic control over the machinery and the processes. All motors, valves, limit switches, and other devices, whether analog or digi-

Uncle Sam Aids Yukon Mills

Federal funds will enable at least seven Alaskan forest products companies to build new dry kilns, planers and lumber-storage facilities in an effort to open markets and advance manufacturing.

The Alaska Forest Association and Sen. Ted Stevens obtained $2 million last year for grants ranging from $53,000-$70,000, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Recipients were chosen from 38 applications based upon how many jobs might be created,

how much money the companies would contribute. and how much value could be added to the products.

One of the seven companies, Icy Straits Lumber Co., Hoonah, intends to buy two small dry kilns that will hold roughly 15,000 bd. ft. Another, Rol-An-Door Enterprises, Ketchikan, plans to use an $80,000 grant to make doors, window casings and trim from Southeast Alaskan timber. Matching funds will enable the firm to buy a mill machine and a dry kiln with 12,000-bd. ft. capacity.

"We'll be able to take rough, wet lumber and dry it, then mold it into the components we need," says spokesman Uriah Rolando. "It makes it more economical."

Meanwhile, Poppert Milling, Wasilla, plans on using a $205,000 grant to expand markets in Alaska and the lower 48 states. Other companies set to receive government funding include J&J Enterprises, Willow; Valley Sawmill, Point MacKenzie; Viking Lumber, Klawock, and W.R. Jones & Son Lumber Co.. Crais.

The Hardware Show began courting building material buyers and suppliers in 1992by launching a concurrent sister show, the National Building Products Exposition & Convention. But attendance has been disappointing, due to factors such as beginning and ending the two shows on different days, temporarily moving the Expo to Navy Pier while McCormick Place was remodeled, and, later, poor positioning of building products exhibits at McCormick Place.

Consequently. show organizers each year have tried to tie the two shows more and more closely together-to the point of last year combining the names into the National Hardware Show & Building Products Exposition.

they now share quarters with the more complementary-and more congested-hardware exhibits.

"It's a way better location," said a show spokesman. "Our attendance research showed that visitors and exhibitors saw a close connection between building supplies and hardware. So that's what we did."

As a result of the shuffle, Paint & Decorating now occupy the entire upper floor of the East Building and all the international exhibits fill the lower floor.

The show also has been reduced from four days to three.

Organizers expect more than 65,000 industry professionals will tour the nearly 3,000 exhibits covering 1.3 million sq. ft. To encourage attendance at the series of free seminars (see schedule at top left), a drawing for a Personal Data Assistant (such as a Palm Pilot) will be held at the end of each session.

The Aug. 13 keynote address will be delivered by Robert Nardelli, president and c.e.o. of The Home Depot, while Ace Hardware Corp. president David Hodnik is the featured speaker at the American Hardware Manufacturers Association's annual meetins Aug. 14.

Engineered Wood Training Online

APA-The Engineered Wood Association now offers free online training to help keep dealers and distributors current on the characteristics and common applications of engineered wood products.

Completion of the class allows you to:

. Answer common questions about engineered wood products and their applications:

Better communicate the benefits of wood structural panels and other engineered wood products;

. Help customers select the right product for the job; Give customers valuable installation tips, and

. Increase sales effectiveness and help better serve customers.

Presented in an easy-to-navigate Web format, APA's Wood University is housed at www.wooduniversity.org. Its mission is to expand architects' and building professionals' understanding of engineered wood products and applications through engaging curriculum, which is based on APA's extensive resources.

The products covered include I-joists, glulam beams and wood structural panels, such as plywood, OSB and composite panels.

Wood University courses are free, and classes are always in session. Courses are accredited by the American Institute of Architects continuing education system and the American Institute of Building Designers continuing education program.

Course 101: Engineered Wood Basics, serves as Wood University's backbone. Included in this comprehensive course are five units, each taking approximately an hour to complete. The modules are designed to give you an understanding of engineered wood products, including how to specify the right product for the right application.

Unit 1: Understanding Engineered Wood Products, introduces the engineered wood product family: categories, characteristics and quality standards.

Unit 2: Selling Engineered Wood, explains engineered wood product features, as they relate to system applications.

Unit 3: Structural Wood Panel Grades and Applications, explains the information shown in the APA trademark and how it relates to floor, wall and roof construction. It also explains APA Performance Rated Panels, span ratings, exposure durability, grades and specialty panel definitions.

Unit 4: Glulam Basics, is a primer on glulams, one of the oldest engineered wood products. It explains specification and application of APA EWS Trademarked Glulam.

Unit 5: Understanding I-Joists, is a primer on the composition, specification and application of APA Performance Rated l-Joists.

Wood University's learning center also includes a comprehensive engineered wood glossary, current product specifications and design tables, streaming video clips of engineered wood product manufacturers, and nearly 300 APA publications available for download as PDF files.

tal, are piped into one of 20-plus Allen-Bradley Controllogix PLCs within the plant. The PLC is the brain behind the function of the process and responds to input signals from field devices such as limit switches, photo cells, thermocouple, etc. with appropriate output signals to devices such as motor starters and solenoid valves to set the machinery in motion. Each one of the approximately 400 motors is wired into a motor starter or an Allen-Bradley l336Plus variable frequency drive depending on the application. The PLCs have a two-way communication channel with each one of these devices by means of ControlNet and DeviceNet. The motor starter or frequency drive is hardwired to a DeviceNet module mounted along side in the same enclosure. The module is in turn wired to a bridge that is mounted in the MCC. This bridge allows DeviceNet and ControlNet networks to be connected and ultimately communicate with the Controllogix PLC.

An Ethernet network runs parallel to the ControlNet network. The

Ethernet serves a dual purpose by providing redundancy within the machine control system, as well as allowing for communication with the administration department and beyond to the outside world. With the correct software and knowhow, a technician can sit in an office or shop in any remote location and monitor, troubleshoot, or even program one of the PLCs.

INSIDE the state-of-the-art quality assurance lab, a technician pedorms LVL bending strength tests.

The prime purpose for the Ethernet is to allow communication with the SQL database, which stores the production and operating data for later retrieval and use by operators or managers. Wonderware FactorySuite is used to round up the data and then plug it into the SQL database for later use. The managers use the data for production quality tracking, while the operations use the data for control. In

the operations systems, 30-plus AllenBradley 1000E touch screen manmachine-interface devices display process information and allow for machine control as well as aid in the troubleshooting of the process machinery.

Women Win D-l-Y Batfle

Roughly one-quarter (23Vo) of Ace Hardware retailers say the number of women performing di-y projects exceeds the number of men tackling such tasks, according to a recent survey by the co-op.

Of those who do not think women exceed men yet, 49Vo believe female d-i-yers are closing the gap.

"We have witnessed an increase in women's role in d-i-y projects in recent years," said Ann Marie Hickey, Ace consumer affairs specialist. "Yet, to hear so many retailers say the numbers are surpassing those of men is somewhat unexpected."

Although 72Vo of respondents said the growQ of distaff d-lyers is because,,riiore women live alone, 66Vo believe women are doing the woi'k themselves rather than waiting for their mate to do the tasks for them.

Other reasons for the increase are women's greater interest in home improvement and maintenance {59Vo), to save money (59Vo), and enjoyment of work (47Vo).

Back to school

f, is for Apple. B is for Beam-CLBeam School that is.

Today's world of engineered wood products can get pretty complicated. In the old days, you didn't feel like you needed an engineering degree to figure out how to drill a hole into a 4x 10. And even though glulam has been around for years, you shouldn't feel embarrassed if you've gotten your cantilever confused with your camber, your live load has died, or the triangular load you thought you were calculating has just become unbalanced.

To help educate and eliminate confusion among their wholesale buyers, sellers and end-users, Rosboro has created a glulam training session called the Beam School.

"Other manufacturers hold classes focusing on I-joists, but we're the only ones doing glulamspecific classes," says course instructor Don Kassa, Rosboro technical services director and creator of the class.

The Beam School is offered four times a year at the Rosboro office in Springfield, Or., and on other dates and locations on the West Coast. Industry professionals who want to expand their knowledge of glulam products, and more specifically, Rosboro glulam products are welcome at these hands-on sessions.

The advantage of attending a class at the Rosboro plant is that the afternoon is devoted to a guided tour of the entire mill facility, which includes lumber cutting, plywood manufacturing, veneer peeling, and, of course, glulam manufacturing. Seeing the manufacturing process up close gives the attendees a new understanding and respect for the wood products they are selling or building with.

"For those who have not seen it," said Wynn Vu, Hampton Distribution, after touring the Rosboro plant, "witnessing the manufacturing process is very important."

Seeing the manufacturing process is not only interesting, but for Scott Shields, an engineer with Brooks Manufacturing, watching the manufacturing process "gave me a better perspective on what (Rosboro) can accomplish and where they are going. I was very impressed with the BigBeam and RMT line and think that they will have good success with those products."

For those not willing or ready to travel, Kassa will also bring the Beam School to your town. "It takes about three and a half hours to cover the class material," says Kassa. "When a wholesaler contacts me and guarantees that they'll have l0 or more attendees, then we'll set it up at their location." Those attending the classes often include sales personnel, yard people, builders and contractors.

I I t

To begin, each student is given a workbook that includes Rosboro product literature, EWS-APA literature, a Rosboro Glulam Resources CD (software), and other notes for the class. Circle No. 145 on p. 70 Circle No. 146 on o. 70 Tnn Mnncnaxr MlclzrxB Jur-v 2001 50

"We start with an introduction and overview about Rosboro, its many products, and then a little history lesson," Kassa says. "Then we dive right into the anatomy of the glulam, why it works, how it works, and why it's made the way it is. We talk about the various combinations of wood used to make these lay-ups (the term describing the composition of a beam) and how these reflect the different strengths. I teach the attendees how we can vary the strengths of a beam based on different woods and the combinations of the wood we use."

Understanding glulam terminology is critical. "We talk about what the words and codes mean including the various combinations of numbers and words particular only to glulams," says Kassa. "We discuss the different kind of loads that can be applied to a glulam, why they are named as they are, how they're used, and how they're relevant to the glulam itself."

An often-confusing terminology is glulam appearance classificationwhat does it really mean? Kassa walks the students through the different APA classifications (Framing, Industrial, Architectural and Premium) and gives tips on which product should be used for a variety of applications.

Then it's time to figure the load. "Once the attendees have a full grasp on glulam terminology," says Kassa, "they learn about the load types, including uniform, concentrated and triangular. I spend considerable time with this concept and we talk about how to size a beam given a specific loading situation. My goal is teach them how to use design tables, which I think is fairly important. When we are finished with the Beam School, they should be able to size a glulam for a typical residential application by using either Rosboro or APA literature."

Some other questions are frequently asked (and answered) at the Beam School: How much camber does a stock beam have? Can it be painted? Will it meet code? Where can it be drilled or notched? How does it compare to (and is it interchangeable with) a competitors' product? Is it economical to use?

Normally, the class ends in a crash course in software. "I spend as much time as the group wants introducing them to the Rosboro-APA WOODCAD beam-sizing software," Kassa says. "My goal is to help them become comfortable using the software so they aren't afraid to rely on it once they get

back in their office. Again, I let them know that I am available for questions anytime. And finally, I show the group and of course explain what else they can find on the Rosboro CD."

Kassa doesn't forget to teach the benefits of selling and building with glulam. "We focus on the qualities that make glulam superior to solid sawn lumber, and to other engineered wood products," says Kassa. "Price is always an issue, as is the stability of the product and its availability."

"Salespeople and users alike want to have confidence that the product won't warp, twist, or delaminate," Kassa continues. "Some competitors' products tend to twist, warp or cup

rather badly. We talk about that. Other engineered products tend to grow and come apart if they are exposed to moisture. Glulam has been around a while, and it's still a great product. Builders want to know that problems like these will not happen with Rosboro's products. I feel strongly that the attendees of the Beam School leave with a better understanding of the benefits of building with glulam and will teach this to their customers."

On the price issue, Kassa reminds the attendees ofthe savings that can be realized by not returning to a job site to repair damage caused by a beam

Class isn't over at the end of the day. For many attendees, the Beam School is just the beginning. Because Kassa is almost always available via Rosboro's technical support hotline, many attendees continue to learn from him well after the class is over.

When I say answer questions, I mean that they should be able to know how to get the information. Not that they're going to leave my class knowing or remembering all the details. "Sometimes I'll get a customer on the phone who wants to know if they have ruined their beam with the hole they just drilled," says Kassa. "Drilling and notching are always a big item. They'll drill a beam or notch it and want to know if it's still all right."

"Since attending the Beam School, I speak with Don at least once a week, asking technical questions," says engineer Terry Coon, PrimeSource.

Graduates of the class, savs Kassa,

Lately Kassa has found himself in front of building inspectors explaining the benefits of glulams and teaching them proper selection. "That's something I want to expand on, reaching more building officials. Hopefully, now that we are finishing the new Rosboro Technical Guide (due out in July or August), we'll start reaching the design professionals, the architects and engineers, with a slightly different version of the Beam School."

The best compliment a teacher can receive is the appreciation of a former student. Asked if he would recommend the class to others, Chris Swaja, BMC West, Sherwood, Or., said, "Definitely. Especially to those who aren't familiar with glulam products."

Transloaders Expand Services

(Continued from page I 3 )

intramodal service(s) they perform. Transloaders are not beneficial owners of goods they handle nor do they profit from delaying transportation equipment. The more cars or trucks they efficiently unload, reload or store in their facility, the more profit they generate. They are rewarded for turning cars or trucks quickly rather than delaying or using them for storage for which demurrage might be assessed. Transloading success is a matter of managing an infinite number of details very well, any one of which can upset your organization.

"It just makes sense that most smaller and medium-sized lumber producers and buyers want to focus on what they do best: manufacturing, selling and/or buying, leaving the transportation details up to us," says Jade Stevenson, president of Desticon Transportation Services Inc.

As proof of the continued growth of transloading, the phenomenon has spawned the fastest growing trade association in the transportation and distribution industry, the Transload Distribution Association.

The group began with a nucleus of 13 directors who met in Chicago to officially organize and then invited transload operators, shippers and carriers to an annual meeting in Las Vegas in 1994. TDA recently held its 8th annual session and has grown into an internationally recognized trade association representing more than 600 facilities in North America and Europe.

TDA is comprised of transload operators members and associate members who are manufacturers, wholesalers, vendors, ports and Class I, Regional and Shortline carriers. TDA is a non-lobbying, self-improvement, networking organization successfully promoting an agenda of interaction between transloaders, carriers and shippers to improve commercial relationships and professionalism resulting in mutual opportunities. TDA actively provides a Fax Connector referral program for shippers seeking reloads from their data base of regional facilities. The association established a Best Business Practices Program that espouses a

Code of Ethics and requires more detailed, accepted business practices and services of a transload facility. The organization conducts special tours and regional workshops. This fall TDA will provide a rail tour of Northeast transloads, shippers and rail facilities from Boston to Montreal. Last year TDA toured transloads along the Rocky Mountain region of Idaho, Montana, Washington and B.C. and held a special workshop on demurrage and use of downsized military installations for transloading. Programs for 2002 include a workshop in Panama City, Fl., in January and the annual conference in Las Vegas in April.

We don't make a lot of noise about NASCOR* engineered floor joists. Let's just say they're stronger, straighter, lighter and dimensionally truer than any conventional 2x10 joist you've ever seen. They're also alot quieter. Which makes NASCOR* the strongest, quietest floor joists you've ever heard.
