Tom Swift's electronic whatsit

Now that virtually all retailers and wholesalers have computers there seems to be a tendency to consider the conversion to high tech complete. Forget that - the fun has just begun.

As the technology cornucopia spills out new products faster than your computer can develop glitches, it becomes harder to keep up and fully utilize these new marvels. Scanners, bar codes, satellite networks, integrated systems with networked PCs, in-car faxes, improved calculators, laptop computers and cellular phones are just some of the devices producing efficiencies undreamed of until recently.

While it's important for management to commit to purchase and fully exploit technological advances, this is easier said than done. In real life, the actual performance of high tech can fall woefully short of the extravagant promises made for it. Result number one: costly failures. Result number two: management hesitancy to be twice burned.

Sellers of these electronic miracles contend that buyers don't fully utilize all the capacities and abilities of their devices. They lament that often employees operate them at less than 50Vo of their

design capability. Unless management provides proper training and insists that employees make the marvels run to full capacity, the return on investment in dollars and efficiency will be far short of ideal.

Yet instruction manuals tend to be murky at best and go down hill from there. Too often technobabble substitutes for plain English. Manuals often are written, it seems, by computer programmers more interested in impressing other prograrnmers than telling the baffled user how the thing works. And when all this is translated from the original Japanese, well...

Despite the cost, confusion and exasperation, these new results of the high technology revolution are essential for the profitability and long term survival of any company. Whether we like it or not" they're here and we bad best learn to live with them. Not at minimal function, but as close to l00qo as possible.

You can be sure that your competition is making full use of every new device to be more effective. If you don't continue to embrace and utilize high tech, what do you think is going tro happen?

Setting the OSB record straight

A FTER 15 years of overcoming .Cl misperceptions about quality and performance, oriented strandboard (OSB) is rapidly approaching 50Vo of the structural panel market.

"One of the things that had to be overcome in the early 1980s was OSB's non-traditional visual characteristics," recalls Stewart Lavigne, fonner Weyerhircuser OSB sales manager now overseeing OSB exports. "In the builder's mind, veneer was king and anything made of reconstituted wood was inferior. But after we convinced them to try it, they found OSB a great producl"

Although OSB evolved from waferboard, it differs with rectangular strands srategically oriented at right angles for enhanced strength. It is equivalent to plywood in the DOC PS2 Performance Standard for Woodbased Structural-use Panels. It also

As an engineered product, OSB is used for residential sheathing and subflooring, floor joists, insulated panels, mobile and modular housing and as a component in multi-core

Prefinished wood r a ready market

RE YOU keeping your customers in the dark or are you telling them the advantages of prefinishing?

"Yards often times get into a commodity mentality," says John Orlowski, owner of Builders PreStain, Loomis, Ca., for the last three years and a 2}-yeat lumbennan prior to gering involved in the prefinishing business. "And the time it takes to close a prefinish job will bog them down. The good prefinisher will handle builder calls for yards and provide information and samPles needed to complete the sale. The good yards do that and the tnowledgeable builders request it."

Factory prefinishing has been an industry for about 30 years. Almost from its inception, wood manufacturers, wood associations and the scientific community have seen it as a benefit.

According to Pat King, western market manager for PPG/OlYmPic Stains and Paints, there are three major advantages to factory prefinishing. "First it is the most cost effective way t0 back prime all wood. Secon4 in a controlled environment the coating can be applied to a proper thickness and allowed to dry and adhere to the wood before installation and exposure. And third, Prefinishing offers builders and architects standtrdizrd specs for the exterior coating on a project. You'd be surPrised at how many builders simPlY saY 'offwhite' when asked what their spec is for the exterior paint. Factory nnishing creates uniform standards and a paint and wood system that works."

However, the system is more than paint and wood. Sean White, operations manager for Beronio Lumber, San Francisco, Ca., believes, "It is important that the yard, prefinisher and coatings manufacturer be in sync. We all have lo do a Professional job representing and backing our products. And that is best accomplished

with straight forward communication."

White remembers a builder who called to order 8,000 feet of Preprimed siding for a project. "We inventory pre-primed siding in our enclosed bins. So, the order was an easy one to fill and I could have left it

ing certain grades of woo( especially all white wood (fir and sPruce), increases its yrdability. "

Because the building industrY is competitive, it is difficult to ignore cosl Orlowski t€calls, "I was visiting a builder who had insalled siding we had pre-primed for one of our Yard cuslomers. Since his paint contractor was there, I asked him how much he would have cbarged to prime all sides of the wood. He said about $6,000. Our customer onlY charged the builder $2,8m. In addition, the paint contractor liked working with the product because he could move on to otherjobs quicker."

It boils down to taking the next logical step, Orlowski points out. First certain grades and types of wood not likely to have a natural finish,

at that. But" I lnew that primed lumber should not sit on ajob site too long before being installed and top coated. I asked our c-trstomer, 'How much do you expect o get up in the next few days?' When he said about 4,000 feet, I asked if I could send that amount now and the remainder when he was close to installing it. Anything you cirn do to help your customer and maintain the integrity of your product should be done."

Scott Berry, market director of a Loomis wood manufacturer, Lausmann Lumber, points out that when wood is prefinished, the Product is closer to industry standards and recommendations. "Prefinishing gives the builder an added time benefit and it moves the wood one step further down the wuk chain. And Pre-Prim-

such as finger jointed redwood and cedar and white woods, should be pre-primed. Beyond that, dealers have the abitty to do a custom finish for the builder. He recommends You ask, when looking at plans and figuring the take-off, "What color would you like your siding to be?" He guarantees it will set your company apart

Some say there's strength in numbers. In this case, the number is two. COMPLY Sturd,l-Floor and l-Beams. Both are engineered to offer better performance. When used together, they create a system of flooring that's virtually unbeatable.

COMPLY Sturd-l-Floor is a solid-core 5,ply panel produced from three layers of veneer and only the highest quality wood fiber. Which in turn creates one of the stiffest panel products available. What does that mean to Mr. and Mrs. homeowner? It means a stiffer, less springy floor. What does it mean to you? Fewer call-backs. And with a bigger choice of joist span options, you could save time and monev on materials.

When you stop to think how important the flooring is, it's nice to know that when you put down COMPLY Sturd-l-Floor, you're putting down the best.

Your company Gan be better rrr

ISSION sratements get a lot of lip service, but very few people have a clear idea of just what they do.

William H. Blades, William Blades & As sociates, Tempe, Az., describes themission statement as a "living, breathing document."

Mission stat€ments cirn be used to reenergize a business and develop a cofporate cultue, he maintains.

They can open the path to training and coaching employees to serve as partners with clients and customers.

Including aims such as "will continuously delight our clients" can help a company to focus on customers. Value-added services that help customers grow their businesses can be developed using a mission statement.

Blades describes corporate culture as "everyone going in the same direction with a united mission for every single client. No holdouts ... 1007o of the group must buy in. If an individual elects not to, the only thing worse than employee turnover is none when there should be."

The first step when a company seeks Blades' help to develop a mission statement is taking the executive gfoup on a retreat to verbalize what they feel the organization shnds for and, more importantly, what it will stand for in the future. He cautions this is no simple process, but

recornmends that it be accomplished quickly.

Standard items that he includes in each mission statement arc:

What we are committed to and stand for with regards to our workforce and our clients.

Phrases or sentences stating the company's conviction in regards to shareholders, vendors and the community.

When the statement is completed" Blades meets with middle management to discuss it. He advises them that the executive group has gran0ed them freedom to modify the statement. Middle management rarely changes one word, he notes, but it is concerned with whether or not top executives will live by the statement.

Tbe mission statement when readv to be made public is framed with i large copy hung in the lobby and smaller versions placed throughout the workplace. Ideally, it is summarized on company litera[rre and business cards.

A mission stateurent does not function alone, Blades points out. Using it with an uganizational chat, position descriptions and standards of perfor-

tion descriptions annually, adding functions considered weaknesses to "sffetch" an individual. Standards of performance measure each item on the position description and can be used to detennine raises or bonuses. A review lets a person not pulling his weight know help is available. What he must do to ensure tenufe can be spelled out clearly with a deadline set for improvement. Using the tools discusseq management can be fair, finn and specific about expectations, Blades says.

With a mission statement in place, everyone lnows wbat the organization stfrrds for, what is expected from them and what method management uses to measure performance. Once sales, management and support groups are receiving targeted training and education, it is time for customized fine tuning to ensure everyone participates in the culture drive. Unless the workforce feels the top group is comnritted, the process will fail, Blades wams.

However, all the work is worthwhile, he adds. "Your people and your clients will thank you for your commitnent to a culure calling for greahess ftom everyone."

Fresno Zoo rr

Added Attractions

Visitors Leave Givilization At The Entrance

ISITORS entering the Fresno, Califomia Zoo (Chaffee Zoological Gardens) soon become part of a primitive culture, sensing distant native drums and the echoing roar of lions. The main entrance gives them their first taste of this instant transport to a distant land and time. A 6,000 sq. ft. openstructue, the entrance soars above them like a giant native hut with a complex series of roofs at six different angles. The center pole where the roof peaks is 50 feet high and is covered with palm fronds, handwoven by Mexican Indians.

The entrance structure and roof rafters are made entirely of Douglas fir and Lodge Pole pine treated with Chemonite, an environmentally-acceptable wood preservative treatment. Chemonite was specified by the architect, Edwin S. Darden Associates of Fresno, because of its proven resistance to the most severe conditions of decay and wood-destroying insects, as well as its long life and cost efficiency. The architects, however, were especially pleased with the visually appealing, greenish-brown color of the Chemonite treated poles, which complement the rough, natural design of the zoo.

The entrance is just a part of the authenticity of a master plan developed for the zoo to create natural environs for the animals.

Another authentic touch underneath and around the entrance is 10,000 sq. ft. of Bomanite concrete, with patterns of river rock and sandstone interwoven to replicate an arid plain across which once coursed a river long gone dry. A series of thatch-covered umbrellas line the entrance and further add to the primitive appearance. And a 300 ft. long Chemonite treated pole fence extending from the entry structure to the existing fence, at staggered heights of 8 to 15 ft., again achieves the rough, primitive look.

In another part of the zoo, a 60 ft. high, mesh-covered tropical rainforest, supported by Chemonite treated poles, is a natural bird sanctuary in which

people can walk amidst free fl ying birds. Open year round, the zoo is inside Fresno's Roeding Park and covers approximately 25 acres.

A Gathering Of Eagle

Eagle Hardware & Garden's feisty chainnan David Heerensperger took slight jabs at the competition in answering point€d questions ftom shareholders at the company's annual meeting.

He said Eagle may pick up some HomeBase stores if that competitor falters and dismissed a comparison of rival Home Depot's stores with Eagle's, saying it was like "comparing a Chevy Gtore) with a Irxus store."

He has his eye on stores HomeBase could possibly close including Denver and Portland. But since they are smaller than Eagle stores, "you're kind of buying a headache" when it comes to remodeling them, Heerensperger said.

President Richard Takata admitted he was surprised by news of Ernst Home Center's public stock offering, until he looked at Ernst's balance sheet. "They need the money," he said. "It's obvious they had to do something."

Officials also revealed Eagle is spending about $25,000 a month in legal fees to fight a lawsuit regarding its inventory miscormt in1992.

Eagle boasted record sales and

profit last year, $10.8 million in ernings on $322.9 million in sales, while expanding from seven to 13 stores.

The fast growth continued during a record frst quarter, with sales of $1(X million (a 947o increase over last year's first quarter) and the addition of three strores.

The chain opened iB seventeenth June 16 in Everett, Wa., and plans to add five morc stores this year and at least seven next year in markets including Denver, Co., Vancouver, Issaquah, Lynnwood and possibly Tacoma Wa.

They are cunently looking at a site for the critical North Seattle area between Northgate and Aurora Village, but would not elabrat€-

Ernst Sells Stock To Expand

Faced with increasing pressure from warehouse-style conpetitors, Emst Home Center Inc., Seafile, rila., plans to go prblic, banking that the stock sale will raise $50 million to finance 50 to 55 superstores over the next three years.

The expansion, combined with the closure of seven to 10 smaller, older stores, will leave the chain with about 120 stores by the end of fiscal 1996. The new units will be similar to the 60,000 sq. ft. superstore unveiled in Tacom4 Wa., in March, the 20th such store opened since 1991.

Securities and Exchange Commission filings reveal that despite Ernst's profitability, payments on a $150 million loan have left parent company NBL Life Assurance Corp. with insufficient cash flow.

Merlo Stars ln L-P Television Ads

In louisiana-Pacific's first national television canpaign, chairman and president Harry Merlo faces the camera md says candidly, "We've had no choice but to do something very inaginative or we'd have just been another lumber conpany."

L-P launched the nultimillion dollar campaign in May as a sponsor of the Indianapolis 500. Over the next several months, the company will air a series of 30-second spots on majff national networks, reaching more than 50 million people. The campaign is designed to position L-P as the innovative leader in the manufacturing and marketing of building products.

"L-P's leadership in new product development is well recognized within the building frade, but we're far from a household word," explained Pamela Selis, director of corporate communications. "To educate a broader population, we lnew nobody could tell L-P's story quite like orn chairman, HarryMedo."

No script was necessary to produce the spots, which featue Merlo speaking from the heart about the company he has led since its inception 2l yeus ago. Insiders and industry experts anribute much of the Fortune 200 company's succ€ss to Medo's visionary, cornmon-sense approach to stretching natural resources and integrating recycled goods to manufacture high-performance, affordable building materials. The spots capture the spirit, candor, energy and imagination of the man and the company.

"We exp@t our invesEnent in this campaign to benefit L-P's well-established distribution and dealer base and to suppoft the marketing efforts of home builden by naking consumers aware of the advantages of our product innovations," said Selis.

"Increasingly, L-P products are being stocked in najor home center chains where the weekend handyman or woman can easily put them in the back of their van or pickup. This ad canpaign should help move more L-P products through this disribution channel, catering to the buy-it or do-it-yourself population," according to Selis.

National programming spans high-profile sporting events including the Indy czr race series and U.S. Open tennis tournament" as well as the news shows Good Morning America, the Today Siow and ESPN Sporrs Center. The commercials will also heavily penetrate five major construction markets: Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Phoenix and Seattle. High-visibility programming in those markets includes top-rated shows like Home Improvement, Seinfeld and 60 Minutes; morning and evening news and local major league baseball and football.

84 Lumber CEO Meets With California Workers

Employees of 84 Lumber locations in Southern California attended a town meeting in Ontario called by ceo Joseph Hardy.

Hardy visited all400 stores in the 84 lumber chain during May to conduct meetings at which each worker had an opporumity to review company objectives and give suggestions to improve operations. "I love to travel to the stores and see ordinary people achieve in the business," he explained at the May 18 session.

Hardy attributes the success of the company to "people development." Most of 84 Lumber's 5,000 workers across the country start on the bottom rung and work up tbe co'rporate ladder, he said. "We develop our people and promote from within. It only takes six months as an associate to become a rnanager Eainee."

To encourage sales, the company has developed team incentives. Workers fomr teams with each member sharing sales commissions with other team members. Developing customer satisfaction is another factor in the success of the company, Hardy said. "We give our customefs one-onone service. Sales associates take a

personal interest in each customer's project, from rcdecorating a kitchen to constructing a dog house."

To compete with giants like Home Depot, 84 Lumber focuses on a different segment of the industry, Hardy said. "Our products are the raw commodities and we sell to professional builders and remodelers."

M Lumber recorded $1.5 billion in sales last year.

Wood Flooring Styles Change

To meet customer demands for more and better options, versatility and durability, retailers must keep abreast with unprecedented changes in the wood flooing narket.

Advanced technology in the past decade has developed different and inproved products and installation techniques. Six wood tone colors were available in wood flooring in 1986. Today, more lhan26 different colors are available, ranging from white to the darkest walnut, and including pastels, geys and deep reds.

Four wood species dominated the wood flooring market 10 years ago. Today there are at least 20 including exotic species. More than 15 styles of flooring are available today, as opposed to five less than 10 years ago.

Over-SO Workers Outdo Kids

Workers over 50 proved theY still have a lot to offer in a snrdy conducted by B&Q PLC, a United Kingdom chain of 280 hardware stores.

Determined to solve the problem of high turnover, B&Q staffed one store entirely with employees 50 and older. Although the experiment might go against U.S. age discrimination rules, the British company found over a two year period that turnover was one-sixth of that at comparable B&Q stores; absenteeism, 39% lower; inventory damage and theft, 597o less, and profit l87o higher.

"Instead of just pointing down an aisle, they'll (older workers) say to a customer, 'Come have a look with me,' and then alk about how theY've used something at home themselves," says Ray Baker, a B&Q training manager.

In the past five years B&Q has increased the percentage of its 15,500 employees 50 or older ftom l7o lo 2Vo to about llVo. Management Plans to increase that percentage to l5Vo in a few years. '"They have all this life experience and can lead younger wukers," notes Baker.

hardwood, plywood overlay and siding.

"Go back a number of years and there would have been far too many difficulties inherent in the product for these applications," notes Frank lannucci, OSB sales manager, Norbord Industries. "That's how far OSB bas come."

Only five years ago, Lavigne points out, builders would not use OSB in cornmercial roof decking. "Now it's one of the most prominent panels for that application."

OSB has undergone numerous technological improvements. New manufacturing processes and advancements in strand quality and orientation are the most significant. Modern presses and improved resins and edge coatings provide a more unifomr board with superior bonding and waterproofing characteristics.

A new generation of OSB mills

with the latest technology is about to come on line. Ten mills in North America and at least two abroad are currently under construction or in the final planning stages. By the end of 1996, North American OSB capacity is forecast to increase 35Vo to 15.2 billion sq. ft. (3/8" basis).

A number of experts agree OSB could capture 507o of the North American structural panel market by 2000. Some project this happening as early as 1998.

Manufacturing processes used to make OSB rate as some of the most environmentally friendly in the forest industry. Whole logs are cut to length, debarked, then converted to smnds. Sawdust and other residual fiber is recycled and bumed as a mill energy source. Mills utilizing log soaking ponds regularly clean them and burn the sludge as fuel. strands now have environmental emissions a fraction of what they were a decade a!o. Forrraldehyde emissions or offgasses ftom bonding compounds are negligible.

Expected to be the 21st Century's preferred structural panel, OSB, says Lavigne, "has developed into a reputable alternative not because of fiber issues, but because it's an excellent product."

a structural panel made from plentiful, non-controversial trees. Take a fresh look at teak

EIURMA may not be Bunna any- lJmore, but Burma teak is still Burma teak, and it's still available.

The country is now known as Myanmar, and it's the source for the world's best quality and largest reserves of teak. Due to both increasing naturally-growing stands and govenrment-rnanaged plantations, Myanmar's teak growing area covers 66,000 square miles.

Story at a Glance

Native Burma teak available yet costly propeilies similar to walnut ... prized for flooring, loinery, paneling, furnlture, cabinetry, ship decking.

About half of all teak imported by the U.S. comes from Myanmar. Nearly 40% of U.S. teak imports come from lndonesia, with the remainder imported from scattered Burma teak plantations started by

early traders in a dozen or so South and Central American, tropical African and island nations (Malaysia Borneo, the Philippines, Java, the Caribbean).

Though available, teak is expensive. It has a well-deserved reputation, similar to walnut's, for its strength and durability, stability in fluctuating aunosphaes and excellent decorative appeariurce. True Burma teak (Tectotw grandis) has a unifomr pale yellow-brown sapwood and a dark golden-brown heartwood without markings, darkening to a mid to drk brown upon exposure. Yet most other types have a rich brown background with darker chocolate-brown markings.

The grain is generally straight in Burma teak, wavy and mottled in Indian teak from Malabar. The texture is coarse and uneven and feels oily, sometimes with a white glistening deposit

The hardwood's weight varies from 38-43 lbs. per cubic foot" averaging 40 lbs. per cubic foot" with a specific gravity of .65. The wood dries well but rather slowly. Variations in drying rates can occur in individual pieces. There is small

movement in service.

The hard, medium density wood has medium bending strength, high crushing strength, and low stiffuess and shock resistance. It is bride and fissile (capable of being split along the grain) with excellent dimensional stability and provides fire and acid resistance. Teak can be steam bent to a moderate radius of curvature.

It works fairly well with both hand and machine tools and has a somewhat severe blunting effect on cutting edges, which must be kept sharp. Tungsten carbide-tipped saws are suitable. Fine machine dust can be a serious skin irritant. Pre-boring the wood is necessary for nailing. Gluing is good on freshly planed or sanded surfaces. It stains well and takes a finish nicely.

Though in favorable locations trees can grow to 130-150 ft. high with a diameter of 6-8 ft" wide, they average 30-35 ft. tall and 3-5 ft. wide. The timber is very durable, but liable to insect attack. It is extremely resistant to preservation treatment.

Teak is also lnown as mai sak and pahi (Burma); sagwan, tekku, kyun, sagon, tegina and tadi (India); djati and gia thi (Indonesia), and jati sak (Thailand).

Its many uses include high-end flooring, furniture and cabinet making, decking for ship and boat building, deck houses, handrails, bulwarks, hatches, hulls, planking, oars, masts, higb classjoinery for doors, scaircases and paneling, dock and harbor worh bridges, sea defenses and garden furniture. Its good chemical resistance makes it suitable for laboratory benches, fume ducts and chemical vats. It is cut for all grades of plywood and sliced for decorative and face veneers.

othing has the curb

appealof genuineredwood I- ! siding, but there are a lot of imitators. PALCO's Rustic redwood siding combines the beauty of knotfy redwood with an economical price. In real wood siding, each piece has a unique appearance with natural grain pattems. Real character shows through whether the siding has a natural look

or a more colorful finish. Customers notice the difference.

PALCO's Rustic redwood siding is airseasoned so it lays flat and holds finishes better than other woods. A variety of patterns are available, like PALCO's Rustic rabbeted bevel siding. This extra-thick pattern creates strong horizontal shadow lines. The knotty, rustic texture underscores the warm natural appearance of the siding.

There's no need to compromise. You can offer your customers genuine redwood siding at a price that will keep them smiling.
