The Last Gustomer

In the nighunare it was always the same. The beleaguered company was down to its last customer. Dark clouds of bankruptcy hung ominously. Everyone in the fimr realized the importance of that last customer. Then came the sickening realization that somehow he was gone, lost forever. Then the bleary relief of awakening - it was just a bad dream.

The message of the above mini-drama is clear as day: Treat every customer as if he or she is the only one you have. And if they depart, so does your job. A simple message, yet one that seems to escape too rumy, even those in direct customer contact.

Sales trainers rightly point out that the correct attitude is an essential part of any successful transaction. When employees deal with customers as if each one were the only one, something marvelous happens. The sales person inevitably transmits a positive tone to the transac-

tion. On the other side, the customer feels or senses that cheerful, helpful attitude. Then things start to progress. When the intent and attifirde on both sides are as they should be, a pleasant chemistry results. The classic win/win situation.

Getting employees to think this way can be tough for management. Keeping them in this frame of mind is even more difficult. Many people find it wearing to relare happily with customers. Most find it near impossible !o maintain a pleasant" cheerful, positive demeanor day after day. It's a rare people-person who can manage it consistently. It also can be hard to remember that ol4 reliable customers can't be taken for granted. They should get the sarne close attention as new customers.

Human frailty being what it is, no one always scores 1007o in treating each customer as if he were the only one. But a commifiient to try can go a long way to improving customer relations.

Builders are buying glulams

WHJ.'"J,1I 3di,,?:Hffi;

products, especially structural glued laminated timbers?

Mainly because builders are buYing them, but there are other reasons, answers the American Institute of Timber Construction, Vancouver, Wa. Laminated beams can be imPor0ant, high profit products for retailers. Many dealers sell a good volume of stock laminated timbers for ridge beams, exposed raf0ers, girder beams, hip beams, floor beams and door, window and garage headers, usuallY at a higher profit margin than solid lumberbeams.

AITC lists nine primary reasons why specifiers prefer laminated beans and headers over solid sawn timbers, I-Joists or steel framing. They suggest dealen consider them as sales points.

Strength: predictable engineering performance with extra strength for longer spans. Conventional stick built framing, I-joists and LVL can't handle many of the comPlex roof angles and longer spans in today's custom homes. Heavier roof trusses require stronger headers as more building weight is transferred to perimeter walls. The extra strength of laninated beams is valuable for "bonus rooms" over garages. Their ability to span 30 feet or more eliminates the need for posts or columns in the middle of the garage space. Some traditional lumber srength values for solid sawn members declined as a result of the lumber industry's in-grade testing program, giving laminated beams even more value.

Lower Gosts: builders report installed cost of laminated loVo to 207o less than for conventional solid sawn timbers or other engineered components with minimum waste at the job sit€. Long lengths and exfa strength make it faster and easier for

framers without field splicing or fabrication. Laminated beams can provide long spans and carry loads that would require much larger solid sawn beams and help avoid callback complains which occur on about 25Vo of all new construction built with green lumber floor and roof joists. These callbacks can cost up o $1,000 each to repair.

Stability: laminated timbers are manufacnued with kiln &ied material which doesn't warp and twist like solid lumber, particularly critical in larger roofs with more hips, dormers and vaults. Laminated can be machined sEaight, without the crown often found in solid sawn timbers.

Availability: in contrast to wide width dimension lumber and timbers which are difficult to find, have a relatively high moisnre cont€nt and are increasing in price, laminated beams are widely available at competitive prices.

Faster Gonstruction: laminated beams can be installed quickly with minimum manpower and equiPment. Time consuming and expensive job site built-up beams are not engineered for most applications.

Ease of Handling: laminated arrives at the job site pre-cut and ready to go and weighs less than a built-up steel and lumber flitch plate beam. Carpentry crews can trim and fit glulam timbers at the job site, in contrast to specialized detailing and fab, ricating required with steel.

Appearance: with the increasing preference for open interiors, exposed ridge beams and cathedral-style ceilings, laminated bearns can be finished to provide an atfactive, custom touch and improve design appeal.

Fire Resistance: unlike unpro-

tected steel bar joists which lose strength quickly and can collaPse under fire conditions, laminated timbers retain a significantly higher percentage of their original strength when exposed to fire. (See related story p.38)

Environmental EfficiencY: laminated bearns come from a renewable raw material resource and require significantly less energy to produce than steel, concrete, aluminum and plastic.

AITC spokesman Don Jaenicke suggests retailers promote sales of laminated beams with in-store displays and samples for builders and highlight the beams in direct mail and newsletters to contractors. Services such as custom cutting to specified lengths, shop drawings, material take offs and erection of the beams can reinforce the concept of being a glulam specialist, he adds.

$9.7 billion potential

for engineered lumber

Ouestion:

Despite issues with forests, do you still believe wood is the most viable material for future new home construction?

More and more builden will seek alternatives as the supply of ordinary lumber continues to decline, Askey maintains. Engineered lumber is a mme environmentally friendly solution than alternatives such as recycled steel and plastic framing, concrete, stone and brick, which have significant drawbacks including higher embodied energy requirements.

The National Academy of Sciences estimates that laminated veneer lumber takes nine times less BTUs per ton to extract, process and use than does steel. Unlike these other materials, engineered lumber comes from a biodegradable, renewable resource, Askey points out. Furthermore, engin@red wood is mone easily adapted to existing building practices.

Askey believes public opinion will fuel increased demand for engineered lumber. "Despite the fact wood is becoming an increasingly more precious and more environmentally pnessured commodity, an overwheLning majority of

"The full potential for engineered lumber in North American residential construction may approach $3.7 billion in 1993," says Marv Askey, who represents Trus Joist MacMillan to home cent€r chains.

He predicts uders for engineered lumber will grow with increased demand fueled primarily by the expense and inconsistency of raditional lumber. "Over the long tenn, the price of dimension lumber will continue to rise while quality declines," Askey says. "Engineered lumber, on the other hand, is structurally superior to ordinary lumber and priced very competitively. Since many people aren't willing to pay a higher price, they'll likely swirch o engineered lumber."

people still consider it to be the best material for building new homes," he says.

To prove his theory, he cites a study by independent research firm Market Facts, Inc. of American's attitudes about wood use in lssiflsntint construction. Commissioned in March by Trus Joist MacMillan, the survey revealed 687o of the American public still believes wood is the most viable material for new home consEuction. Wood has a long-term fuhrre in new home construction because it is a renewable resource in the opinion of 77Vo of those surveyed. In addition 767o wantthe government to support new wood product technologies to reduce lumber needed from old growth forests to build houses and 8l7o want the forest products industry to develop and promote technologies such as wood engineered from small, fast-growing trees as an alternative to old growth forest lumber.

Engineered lumber products can meet these expectations with competitive and stable prices,

Story at a Glance

Askey explains. "Engineered lumber isn't subject to as great price swings as dimension lumber. Ordinary frarning materials must rely on currently uncertain supplies of large, old-growth logs, but engineered lumber can use readily available, small-diameter logs.

The installed price of engineered lumber is slightly higher per square foot than that of the solid-sawn lumber it replaces, but Askey says unique benefits more than compensate for this. Unlike regular lumber, engineered lumber has most of the mois0rre removed during the manufacmring process, so it won't change shape before or after it is instrlled. This eliminates customer callbacks. Some engineered lumber manufacturers guafantee their product against defects for the life of the home.

In addition, engineered lumber, typically half the weight of solid sawn, is easier 0o install and helps to reduce injuries caused by working with heavier, dimension lumber. While as much as llVo of traditional lumber might not be used at a job site, waste with engineered lumber, which is nanufactured to strict quality criteria, is usually less than lVo, typically the result of saw cuts.

Engineered lumber manufacturers can concain prices by diversi$ing timber sources and transforming previously unsuitable, low demand species such as aspen and poplar into high quality products. These fast growing, surall diameter trees provide a steady wood fiber source at a practical cost for manufacturing large dimension franing lumber, Askey emphasizes.

T?eated wood adds up on bottom line

INCREASED interest in pressure

Itreated wood products for deck construction is one change building product retailers in westem states can live with and benefit from. Treated products give retailers readily available, economical alternatives to offer customers, alternatives that can last a lifetime.

The availability and price of cedar and redwood have played a part in the growth of treated products. Not long ago, these woods were standard for decking use, but relatively little old growth cedar and redwood is available today. New growtl heartwood offers some protection from insect attack, but it is often cost prohibitive.

Story at a Glance

Treated wood can replace redwood and cadar for decks ways to sell confidence of long life and insect resistance.

Today's redwood buyers typically choose lower grades that contain higher amounts of sapwood with liule resistance to decay and temfte attack.

Understructure materials specified for decks also are changing. Although in many areas, the vast majority of decks are built on concrete pier blocks to avoid ground contact of wood, protection ftom decay and termite attack is still a concem in exterior wood construction. A transition from untreated species to pressure treated species can solve the problem.

The durability of reated wood in the Pacific Northwest has been underscored by an extensive and expanding number of county and municipal building codes requiring pressure treated wood for use in decks. Although building inspectors, builders and architects in arid states are less familiar with the benefits of treated wood, the rend is becoming evident.

Product specifiers are beginning to rcalize that many man-created elements. such as the moisture from lawn sprinkling systems and ornamental vegetation in contact with wood, can foster ideal settings for decay. Even arid states have drywood

The Merchant Magazine termites which thrive with minimal moisture and easily invade unprotected wood.

Longevity is the bottom line. Treated wood lasts longer. Dennis Hayward, Western Wood Preservers Institute, recalls a recent conversation with a European associate: *I asked him why 25Vo of the average home in England is built with treated wood (their weather is similar to that of northwestern states). I was told that Europeans expect homes to last so they build them that way. Their mind-set is ingrained in longevity with the evidencp found in their construction."

Hayward believes quality homebuilders should use treated wood in the subsfructures of kitchens, baths, laundries and other areas exposed to higb humidity, moisture and dry rot.

Treated southem pine is creating a significant change with its arrival in the southwestem market. Plants such as California Cascade Industries, which now treats southern pine in their Fontana and Woodland, Ca., facilities, are using it in place of westem species.

Treating southern pine is desirable for a number of reasons, according o California Cascade's Hank Feenstra and Richard Rose. It fills in for wood species, including Douglas fir and hem-fir, in limited supply from the northwest because of restrictions created by the Endangered Species Act, and it adapts easily to the treating process because it does not require incising. Southern pine also is extremely attractive and competitively priced, they point ouL

f, S engineered wood products become more common in &}ne marketplace, it becomes imperative that sales peo ple be faniliar with the basic terms, concepts and uses of these wood products manufactured to deliver consistent performance while making the most of our natural resouroes.

Composite Lumber: Used for joists, CL is a beam product composed of a combination of wood components, each manufactured differently. One common combination consists of a thick OSB web and top and bottom LVL flanges.

Bngineered \ilood Products: Building products designed and manufactured to meet particular specifica' tions including wood I-beams, laminated veneer lumber, glulam beams, parallel strand lumbr, parallel chord trusses and structural panels. They utilize natural wood rcsources o the rnximum.

Engineered Studs: Made from dry, straight, short lengths of western spruce, pine, fr or Douglas fir bonded together with finger joints and waterproof glue, engineered studs come in2x4 and2x6 sizes up to 10 feet long.

Glued Laminated Beams: Also known as glulams' these engineered structural members are manufactured by end-gluing dimensional lumber (2x4s, 2x6s) into continuous plies. Face-glued with waterproof adhesives, the plies are fonned under pressure and finished. Glulams are used for headers, girders, pudins, beatrts, arches, long spans and exposed applications like ridge beams and roof rafters.

Laminated Veneer Lumber: Produced in common framing lumber sizes, LVL is a beam product manufactured from wood veneers laid in parallel formation, then face laminated for high uniform strength and stiffness. LVL is used for hip and valley rafters, stairwells, headers, beams and scaffolding.

Metal-Plate-Connected Metal-Web Wood Trusses: Primarily for floor and flat roof applications, these trusses have wood top and bottom chords and metal webs connected by metal gusset plates punched ino the chords.

Metal-Plate-Connected Wood Trusses: Standard framing system for residential roofs, these wood trusses have wood chords and wood webs connected with metalgusset plates with punched teeth. They may be pitched chord or parallel chord, and can span from 20 fL to more than 100 fr

Oriented Strand Board: A structural, performancerated panel product, OSB is manufactured from reconsti-

tuted, mechanically oriented wood strands bonded with resins under heat and pressure. Material may be produced as the center layer of composite panels or cross laminated in layered panels. Suitable for the same applications as plywood, OSB provides a unifonn panel free of core voids, lnot holes and other natural imperfections.

Parallel Strand Lumber: PSL is manufactured with long veneer strands laid in parallel formation and bonded together with waterproof adhesives to fonn beams. Like LVL, this product is used for beam and header applications where higb bending strength is critical.

Pin-End-Connected Metal Web' \ilood Trusses: For sloped roofs, flat roofs and floors, these trusses have wood top and bottom chords, metal webs and steel pin connectors. They may be either parallel chord or pirched chord.

Plywood: The original structural wood panel, plywood consists of thin sheets of veneer or plies, arranged in perpendicular layers. Panels are used in roof, floor and wall applications.

Waferboard: A construction t panel, waferboard is manufactured t from reconstituted wood wafers, as opposed to strands, bonded with resins under heat and pressure. Designed for floors, roofs and walls, it provides a strong and unifonn panel.

Wood l-beans: Also known as I-joists, wood l-beans are structual, load carrying products designed for roof and floor joist applications with long length and low material weight. The "I" configuration provides high strength and stiffrress. Flange material for l-beams is typically dimension lumber or LVL; web material, OSB or plywood.

Don't fall in love with your inventory

}IaHROUGHOLI"I all of history there have been notable I love affairs. At the same time many people have been accused ofbeing blinded by love or not being good enough for their betrothed. Today many hardware, lumber and home center operators bave fallen in love with their inventory. They have become blinded by love, thus ignoring the cosB of ctrrying inventory that is not good for them.

If we look at each and every inventory item as a decision to invest money with the hope of achieving a renrn on that investment, why do we hold onto our DOG (danraged and obsolete goods) items so sfongly? Why don't we liquidate them and invest the money in a product with a better renrn? Many stores have trained their staffs to never sell anything below cost. Cost to most dealers is what they paid for tle item, or what they see as cost on the unit inventory inquny scr@n on the computer systen.

They are not taking into account &e interest expense they are paying their banker to bonow the money to buy the item; they are not considering what they are paying their staff to order it, check it" price it, stock it and dust it; they are not thinking of the money they pay their insurance company and state and local govemments for the honor of owning the product.

Many industry experts maintain that sifiing in your stce for a one-year period without being sold can add between 247o utd30Vo morc to the cost which you acflrally paid for an item.

Sometimes, even selling something at cost will not get rid of ir You ask, "How much should I ask for when rying to sell DOG items?" As long as it is cash, don't refuse any offer! kt me give you an example: You have a specialty hammer which you are selling tor $22. You haven't

sold it in the past year and it looks like you probably won't sell it this year either. You are offered $8 for it - do you take it? You cost was $16 - you will take an $8 loss from your cost numbers. [rt's ignore any consideration of your past holding cost and just look at what would happen if you took the $8 and purchased a faster moving product such as a 25# box of 16d CC sinker nails which has a cost of $8/carton, retail price of $l?carton and a history of selling one carton a month:

You would bave had to borow the $8 originally needed to buy the first box of nails from the banh but instead you took the $8 received from the sale of the DOG hammer and reinvested it in the nails which put $40 toward the bottom line after the loss was made up from the sale of the hanmer.

Inventory is an invesmenl Do not fall in love with it. You have a choice of which items to invest you money in. You will always receive a 07o return on investnent on items that never sell. Take bad money and invest it in good inventory and it will make good money.

A good computer system will provide you with reports which will help you thoroughly analyze your inventory invesunent, including uncovering the bad ilems. And, dont wait until winter to have a clearance sale - do it now when your Eaffic is at its highest poinr Traditionally, you will be able to get a higher pnce for clearance items during your busy season than any other time. Turn those DOGs ino cash today.

DRE-FtrVISHED natural wood sidI ing has been around since the 1950s, touting a casebook full ofbenefits and advantages over unfinished materials. But it seems that the jury is still out. Today, only an estimated 117o of wood, plywood andhardboard products are sold pre-finished.

Stumbling blocks have been higher initial price, past shortcomings in quality, lack of visibility for the product and lack of availability from

retailers. But improved quality and aggressive marketing are working to change that, presenting retailers, remodelers, builders and architects with a stonger case for selecting prefinished materials.

EXHIBIT A: PRICE.

Since pre-finishing siding necessitates additional labor and materials for the manufacurer, it will naturally reflect these costs in the selling price. In the long run, though, pre-finished materials can actually cost less. To accurately compare pricing to site-finished products, buyers must consider tle later costs associated with site-finished siding: on-site painting materials, on-site labor costs, scaffolding costs, scheduling, call-backs, spoilage, shrink lines, lap malks, streaking, ovefspray and clean-up cos8.

EXIIIBITB: QUALITY.

Research, technical advancements and state-of-the-art equipment have improved the quality of pre-finished products so they are actually bett€r than site-finished products. Unlike finishing at the job site, pre-staining and pre-priming typically covers the entire wood surface, front and back. Mechanical application provides a more unifonn coat, improving consistency and eliminating maintenance. Factory finishing also guards against weathering and photodegradation, increasing the longevity of the coating and the material. And quality confol is typically easier and more ttrorough at the production site than at the job site.

EXIIIBIT C: CONVENIENCE.

Pre-finishing means one less project for the builder or remodeler to

worry about. And one less to arange, perfonn and pay for.

EXIIIBIT D: SELECTION.

Operators can finish a wide variety of materials, including lumber, plywood, siding, fencing, decking, rim and soffit, in a full range of widths and thiclnesses. Even the nails can be color matched and coated. An extensive selection of semi-transparent and contemporary solid colors are also available.

Story at a Glance

The verdict is out on pre- primed and pre-finished wood siding manufacturers expect increased appeal due to high quality, cost and time savings, guarantees.

EXIIIBITE: WARRANTY.

Extended warranties that range from 10 to 25 years, depending on the level of the coating, are offered on pre-finished products. For consumers, a waranty is an insurance plan. For manufacturers, it's a strong statement of confidence in their products. For retailers, it's a wonderful selling poinr

How to revive a tired, worn-out, old store

IfIrHAT'S the flrst thing a small, traditional retailer UY should do when a large warehouse store invades his neighborhood?

"Clean up the place," advises Robert P. Potts, a Dallas, Tx., consultant specializing in the planning and merchandising of retail stores. "Make everything look great, beginning at the parking lot with new blacktop or asphalt and fresh lines. Stores are like people, they're more attractive propedy attirpd."

Is all metal gleaming and are all painted surfaces shiny and fresh? Do dusty, dirty point of purchase displays and promotional signs block the view of the merchandise and fixtures? Does merchandise appear new and fresh or tired and disarranged? Are the employees well groomed, wearing a company apron, jacket or smock?

Story at a Glance

What to do when a large warehouse chain moves into town inexpensive ways make a small location look larger and more attractive ... merchandising that appeals to customers.

Ask yourself, "Why should a customer shop in my store?" Pous suggests. Is it clean with a pleasant decor? Is it comfortable with proper air conditioning and heating, fresh air, arple light, clear aisles, easy to reach, clean, dust free merchandise? Is the signage fresh, aftractive, readable and infonnative? Is the merchandising creative? Are addon sales, projects and impulse purchases fostered with vignett€s, displays and feaurre ends?

As part of the parking lot refurbishing, he recommends getting rid of stray w@ds, rimming bushes and trees and filling gaps in the landscaping. When this is complete, he advises that you stand in front of the store, concentrate on what you see and ask yourself some questions.

What do all those signs do for the customer? Do they explain who, what and why or do they just clutter the enhance? Is the paint fading, dirty or peeling? Does the front glass sparkle or can you barely see through it? Does the entrance invite or repel? Will customers want to enter or will they pass you by to go to the competition? A custometr's impression of a retailer accounts for 70Vo to 80Eo of the volume, Potts maintains.

Continue your exarnination on the other side of the front door. [s the floor clean and uncluttered with all merchandise displayed on fixfireq not stacked in front of them, to make the aisles look wider? Does the lighting eliminate dim corners to make the interior glow or are lights missing or burned out? t)o the walls appear o be closing in or are they painted a bnight color that visually expands the interior of the store? Is the sales counter clean with no clutter?

Up to this point, a dealer should be able to improve the appearance of his store with little or no expenditure of cash, Potts says. Replacing fixtures is optional. New racks and displays can update a store, but are not essential. A small store should use low fixtures which allow sales people and customers to see each other. Tall warehouse tlpe fixturing annoys many people by making them feel claustrophobic and inadequate to reach merchandise. In the lumber area, it's a different story. Money spent for cantilever racks is a good investment in efficiency.

When the store is looking its best, Potts suggests taking a look at merchandising practices. Are hanging blister packs used to utilize space? fue there bulk displays to appeal to customers who want to buy exactly what they need? Are profile and measurement charts being used at point of purchase and the cash register to detennine the SKU number and the price of bulk merchandise such as screws or bolts? Is the store selling consumable merchandise at a bargain price as a loss leader?

Potts' final recommendation for keeping up with the competition is "have an adequate number of employees who lcrow what they are selling as well as what the customer needs and use advertising to let the customer know about both the merchandise and good service."

Bogus Bankruptcy Notice Girculated

In troubling times for Southern California lumber dealers, wholesalers were not surprised last month to receive notice of another retailer slipprng into bankruprcy. But the retailer was.

Escondido Lumber Co., Escondido, Ca., was shocked to learn someone had mailed a phony bankruptcy notice to scores of its creditors, suppliers and customers.

"It was a very creative document, put together clearly with the intent to assassinate our character," said secfetarylreasurer Patti Geib. "But someone familiar with banlauptcy notices would have recognized immediately that it wasn't authentic."

The law firm listed on the notice denied filing it and confirmed that nunerous discrepancies prove its obvious falsity.

Yet the perpetrator lnew the company rather intimately, since the document contains Escondido's correct tfl(payef ID Number, lists as trust€e a long-gone employee and was sent to every one of their vendors.

Headlined "Notice of Bankruptcy'' in bold type, the notice charged that

Escondido misused funds from the employees' profit sharing plan to pay off creditors and that anyone found to have received such funds was required to return them to the bankruptcy trustee. Geib denied the allegations.

The letters were mailed in midJune, postmarked from San Diego, Ca., and stamped "Company Mattef' in red, but with no renrrn address.

Escondido Lumber has posted a reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits and turned the matter over to the U.S. Disrict Attorney.

"This notice was cleady an attempt to disrupt our business and perhaps drive our customers away," Geib said. She suspects it may be related to Escondido Lumber's curent litigation with Geib Lumber. The nvo corporations separated in September and many problems, including death thleats, have followed, she said.

Or, she said, the prankster may be a disgruntled worker. Escondido Lumber was downsized in 1990 and some long-time employees were released.

"What type of person would do such a thing, preying on people like this?" said Geib. "Times are hard enough already."

Harvest Plan Memo Leaked

With release of an official timber policy plan lagging behind tle promised June 2 date, a memo to Pres. Clinton from one of the Ecosystem Management Assessment Team scientists, claiming timber available for harvest is less than thought, was leaked to the press.

K. Norrran Johnson wrote that forest plans overestimate the timber sales progams by as much as 4O4o. He al' leged that forest plans assumed roadless and other controversial areas would be available for harvest but in reality are not. Acres available for management are the centnal issue surrounding timber sale program levels. The harvest goes down proportionately with land base restrictions. Many in the industry thought the memo was deliberately leaked as an attempt to justify the low timber sales numben associated with options pro(Please tum to page 30)

Tape Takes Forest Story To Public

Members of the wood products industry are using the cassette tape "I'm A Tree" and its presentation kit to help students and adults understand the forest products community and its stewardship of our nation's forest lands.

Over 6,000 copies of the song have been distributed by Norman Munay and the music division of U*C Coatings corp. in the past six months. The newly scripted renewable forest story presentation kit is designed for the elementary school level, but can be adapted for adult groups.

Kits can be obtained for $25 postpaid ftom U*C Music Division, P.O. Box 1046, Buffalo, N.Y. 14215. Tapes are $2.7s.

Consumer Awareness Push Begins

The wood preserving indusEy is conducting an intense communications campaign to improve retailer and wholesaler participation in the industry's Voluntary Consumer Awareness Program (VCAP).

Originating in 1986, this program provides neated wood purchasers with Consumer Information Sheets outlining benefits, use and handling procedures for working with the product. "Retailers and wholesalers need to fully understand the importance and responsibilities of their roles in the voluntary consumer awareness program and the need to tnain andmotivate sales personnel to participate," explained Bill Crossman, American Wood Preservers Institute product acceptance committee chairman.

AWPI asked all wood preserving industry members to

contact retailers and wholesalers across the country in June to make them aware of the need !o distribute Consumer [nformation Sheets to each treated wood purchaser. Since the program's inception, participation of wood preservative formulators and wood treaters has remained neuly 1007o, but due to high personnel tumover rates and incorrect perceptions, participation and awareness rates among retailers and wholesalers have declined.

The program is one of several measures AWPI detailed to the EPA last fall to show their intent to improve the distribution of Consumer Information Sheets to consumers. Results of industry research to detetmine the type of store signs that best attract attention and prompt treated wood purchasers to request a Consumer Infonnation Sheet also have been released.

International Hardwood Program

The International Hardwood Products Association's CURE (Conservation, Utilization, Reforestation, E<lucation) Committee is expanding its worldwide efforts to preserve tropical forests.

To increase mahogany growth and encourage timber trade from sustainable managed sources, CURE will sponsor collection of viable seeds from mahrre trees for planting on degraded agricultural lands in Central and South America. Popularly known as "Johnny Mahoganyseed," the program will be supervised in each country by a plan coordinator. The first to take part, Bolivia and Brazil will serve as models for other nations.

Public Favors Species Act Reform

The public wants fewer envirorunental regulations. With nearly 9,000 readers responding to USA Weekcnd's "Face-off on the Environment " 62Vo agteed with an argument for Endangered Species Act refomr.

The Sunday supplement presented viewpoints of Earth Day founder Denis Hayes, who favored more protection for endangered species and a federal push for fuel efficient cars, and William Perry Pendley, a proactive attorney on behalf of land use rights, who argued for refonn of the Endangered Species Act, wise management of forests to provide specifically for wood products and curbing environmental litigation.

Calling on a 900 number, 8,914 people agreed nearly two to one that the environment does not supersede all other earthly concerns. Hayes received approval from only 387o.

Pendley summed up the results, "If Clinton has a mandate, it is to stengthen the economy, not to be a slave to the sky-is-falling, mankind-is-a-cancer-on-the-planet rhetoric of environmental group6."

Wilson Orders Timber Review

During a visit to The Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia Ca., California Governor Pete Wilson announced his intention to streamline the timber harvest review process.

He ordered California Departments of Forestry and Fish & Game !o "eliminate unreasonable delays in the process which threatens jobs throughout rural Northem California.'

The mandate asked the state agencies to step up their review of timber harvest plans and to develop new procedures for quicker and rnore consistent goveflxnent approvals. The procedures should be ready within 60 days.

During his early June North Coast visit, the Governor criticized steps taken by the Clinon Adminisfration to reduce the already meager timber harvests ftom California's national forests and called for reform of the Endangered Species Act.

Gov. Wilson announced three appointments affecting forestry policies. Humboldt County supervisor Bonnie Neely and Simpson Timber Co.'s chief forester and timberlands resource manager Tharon O'Dell were appointed to the siate Board of Forestry. Board of Forestry chairman Terry Gorton was appointed assistant secretary of the Resources Agency for forestry and rural economic developmenL

Whatever happened to...?

Bad< in the 1800s and eady 1900s when the lumber industry in the Wesl was in ils infancy, lhere was litile lo do in the small, bad<woods towns where the sawmills were localed. The localtavem was the social centef and fights wera a fairly common occurrcnoo.

Today's lumberman is a much more mild mannered and gentlemanly breed, However, we w€rs reminded recenlly of an incident that ocqJnsd in 19i./ lhal was indeed reminiscent of the olden days. In lhat yeat, in Pdneville, Or., a group of lumbermen in town for lhe annual HooHoo Golf Ouling made a valianl effort lo live up to the image thal thoir prad€c€ssors literally'loughl" to uphoH,

A group of cowboys enloying a social ouling al one of the local wdering holes took exception to something one of the miH mannercd lumbermen said or did and an allercalion ensued. Following is a blow-by-blow description of what took place: Our good hiend Ed Wlson was in lhe thick of thhgs when the 'tir' staded ftying. Franz Miller looked down at hb putting hand and deciled it was a good time to visil the restroom or perhaps check od the quality of the oil painlings on the wall. Demonstrating how people do lhings lhal are absolutely foolish when they have ovedndulged, one of the cowboys hit Dick Wd<man, all 6'6'of him. Can you imagine anyone ddfting this far from realily? Ross Loveland's pulting hand got broken and lhe cowboy on the receiving end wenl lo the hospital. Stan Leonad suffered two bpken bones hr onE of his feet. Naturally, the lumbermen won the fighl and Franz Miller probably won the golf toumamenl, as he has done several times we hear.

Nowadays cowboys and loggers are buddies because they have a common bond. The preserualionists are trying to pul bolh groups oul of business, Loggers cut down pretly trees and cows trample down the meadorvs and leave cow pads everywhere. Even the hallowed symbol of ranching and cowboy lile b under attack. Horses are considered taboo on mountain trails b€cause thoir droppings along lhe trail are oflensive to hikers,

This bdngs to mind a news ilem rvs ran across the other day that may be heaiening to lhose in the above categod€s. PARALLAil PSL, an engineercd lumber from Trus Jobt MacMillan, is pressure tfeded wtth a type C solution of CCA for applications requiring resistance to exposure or infestation, induding decks, balconies and carports.

Treated Engineered Lumber

CCA pressure Eeated engineered lumber combines two technologies to improve on nature and ordinary lumber.

Engineered lumber is stronger, can span greater distances, is available in larger dimensions than ordinary lumber and is more dimensionally stable to avoid changes before or after it is installed. When pressure treated, it has all these advan0ages plus decay resistance and a longo life span.

The combination also benefits the environment. Engineered lumber uses smaller diameter Eees to reduce pressure on old growth forests and has lower embodied energy requirements for production than alternative framing materials such as recycled steel or plastic. The longer life provided by CCA trearnent is an additional environmental plus.

Remodeling Strong In So. Ca.

Lumber sales for remodeling will continue at current levels in Southern California this year, encouraged by tax benefits and still lofty prices for new homes despite the state's sluggish economy, according to the Western Wood Products Association.

Since wood is the building material of choice in California (using about 337o of western lumber mill production annually), WWPA anticipates a good year. They estimate 15.3 billion feet of lumber will be used for repair and remodeling this year,32.5Vo of all lumber used in the U.S. Remodeling can raise the value of a California home witiout affecting taxes sinc€ laws allow a property tax

increase only when a home changes owners. This, coupled with new construction costs averaging $150 per square foot while the rest of the country builds for $50 to $75 per square foot, encourages remodeling of older homes.

Repair and remodeling lumber use nearly doubled during the 1980s, reaching 15.15 billion feet in 1990 and for the first time surpassing the volume used for new construction.

Owls Like Private Timberland

A study of forests on California's North Coast and Cascade range found more than 5,000 spotted owls rather than the 900 estimated by federal biologists.

CFA found owls more numerous on private, managed timbedands than on neighboring national forests, emphasizing that proactive forest planning can help provide owl habitat, the Western Wood Products Association reported.

Details of the study were sent to the U.S. Interior Deparunent. Results will be available in a few months from a second study being conducted in the Sierra Nevada range.

Seattle's Fagle Hardware & Garden Inc. reportedly is looking for Vancouver sites and Home Depot has scheduled its frst Canadian store to open in late 1994 with four more opening in 1995.

"Going into Vancouver is a natural progression of our recent entry into Seattle and the Pacific Northwest," chairman and ceo Bernard Marcus said.

Using the trade nane Construcentro, the operation will be patterned on Grossman's nine Contractors' Warehouse stores located in California and Nevada. Grossman's dso operates 131 stores in nine Northeastern states.

G-P To Protect Woodpeckers

In a first-of-its-kind agreement between the government and a private landowner, Georgia-Pacific Corp. has promised to mark woodpeckers on its land and set up buffer zones and foraging habitat on four millon acres of southeastern timberland.

A 200 foot buffer zone plus 100 acres of foraging habitat will be maintained around each of 113 red cockaded woodpecker colonies for a total of 56,000 protected acres. Selective tree cutting will be allowed in those arcas.

Expressing the hope that the G-P agreement will prevent a crisis situation like the one in the Pacific Northwest with the northem spotted owl, Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt hinted that arrangements to protect the woodpecker are in the works with other companies.

Washington Chain's Generosity

It is pafi of Ernst Home and Nursery's mission to be a good corporate citizen by doing what it can for children, the less fortunate and service organizations that help customers and communities, explains Monty Reese, senior vice president of marketing/advertising for the 73 store Seattle, Wa., chain.

Big Brothers of King County, Seattle Children's Theater, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Northwest Harvest" Bellevue Boys and Girls Club and numerous local schools and youth groups have received donations of money and merchandise.

Recently a drive organized by Midvale, Ut., store manager lori Kearsley to collect funds for sugery needed by an employee's grandson was extended to the entire chain with $20,000 raised to help with a $300,000 intesrinal transplant operation.

Five Ways to Satisfy Customers

Customers are becoming more demanding. They ask questions and want information. If what you offer doesn't measure up, buyers will quickly go elsewhere.

Pointing out that the recession may be over, but consumers' buying psyches remain guarded and demanding, Ray Kennedy, president of Masco Building Products, identifies five consumer trends:

(1) Buyers are paying more attention to how products are made and how long (and how strongly) the manufacttner stands behind them.

(2) Everyone wants products in stock or at least on time delivery.

right) President Bruce Norlie, Bob Norlie, who came oui of r+ oroied.

break ground with shovel used almost 20 years ago to laundr @nstruction of the manufacluring facility. The 7,500 sq. ft. building with 4,0Ct0

(3) Choices in everything from cabinet doors to kitchen sinks are multiplying, allowing consurners an opportunity to create homes that are uniquely theirs.

(4) Buyers looking to judge the relationship between cost and value want sEaightforward and understandable product infornation, not marketing hype.

(5) Consumers want environmentally friendly home products that do more with less. Energy and water conserving designs are becoming household standards. Buyers want to cut post-consumer waste by avoiding products with unnecessary packaging.

Increasing its focus on remodeling and decor products, the National Home Center Show & Conference is expanding as the Building, Remodeling & Decor Products Expo.

Next year's show, Feb. 13-15, also moves from Chicago to the Dallas, Tx., Convention Center. Future expos will rotate among Dallas, Atlanta Ga., and Orlando, Fl.

"We believe today's market provides a wealth of exciting new opportunities for our industry which is continuously more responsive to all users of building, remodeling and decorating products," said show director John Berry.

The revamped show will provide ideas, information and an interchange ofexperiences on the developing trend for dealers to focus on basic building and decor products and professional end users, he added.

The National Home Center Show's Building, Remodeling & Decor Products Expo will redirect to accommodate the product needs of professional end users as well as do-it-yourself consumers. Special pavilions on tlte exhibit floor will highlight new products and retail services. A technology cen0er will demonstrate the latest operating and selling efficiency systems.

John D. Cashmore & Market Resource Associates will produce an innovative "Wodd of Wood" pavilion which will be a "must see feature on the exhibit floor," Berry emphasized.

"The winners of the '90s will be those who figure out how best to serve the various combinations of professional builders and remodelers along with the homeowner/customer they must satisfy," he concluded.

Glulams resist fire

As lumber prices fluctuate, supply shrinks and some builders begin using steel franing, lumber dealers should begin to put more emphasis on the fire safety benefits of glulam beams.

Glued laninated timber competes effectively with steel on the basis of d€sign requirements, fast erertion and competitive in-place costs, but in resisting fire it outperforms metal. Unlike unprotected steel bar joists that lose strength quickly and collapse when exposed to fire, glulam beams reain a high percentage of their initial strength.

This allows glulams to continue to carry loads when exposed to fire as confirmed by tests sponsored by the American Forest & Paper Association

and the American Institute of Timber Construction. These fire tests have resulted in a building code approved methodology for calculating a one hour or greater fire rating for heavy timber franing members.

Steel loses strength rapidly as its temperature is raised above about 480" F. At about 1020", it has less than one-half of its original snength and loses X)Vo of iB srength at abut 1380'. Ordinary building fires auain temperatures from 1290" to 1650" F. Wood does not lose srength in the same way. It loses strength only as material is lost through chaning of the surface. Wood does not normally ignite until a temperature of about 480'F is reached.

Structural Panel Outlook

Slow economic fecovery and continued constraints on western timber supply will limit U.S. structural wood panel production this year to about 26.3 billion sq. ft. (3/8-inch basis), stigbtly more than last yer's nanly 26 billion feet.

Housing starts are on ftack to finish af l.25 million, compared to 1.20 million last year, but indusrial and nonresidential construction markets will be weaker than expected, the American Plywood Association's Craig Adair noted. "The industrial market

has been and will continue to be affected by higher prices for structural panels and more specifically by the lack of availability of sanded grades and species ftom the West"" he said. "Industrial purchasing agents have a lot ofchoices for sheet goods and well have to fight back to increase the indusrial markel"

Industrial market demand will decline 40 million sq. ft. this year with nonresidential construction and international markets dropping 25 rrillion and 115 million sq. ft. respectively. Total demand is expected to ris€ 450

PACIFIC FOBEST PKODUCTS, INC.

million sq. ft. to 28.05 billion, an increase of l.1qo over last year.

Construction of several new oriented strand board mills in the U.S. and Canada will add to industry production capacity during the next five years. This plus an anticipated economic downturn in 1997 could result in a significant capacity demand imbalance, Adair cautioned.

TV Shorving Date Changes

Air date for the "US Corporate Profiles" television show starring Curt Bean Lumber Co., Glenwood, Ar., (see June, p. 16) has been changed to July 16 from July 9, according to Criterion Productions, Inc. Times are 5:(D a.m., Mountain Time, and 7:09 a.m., Pacific Time, on cable's Discovery Satellite channel.

Hang-tags Excel ln Sign Test

Plastic hang-tags urging them to ask for Consumer Information Sheets (CIS) caught consumers' attention more often than other signs used in a Eeated wood industry test.

A rack filled with CIS sheets, an electronic sign, stick-on signs on the cantilevers holding treated wood and stick-on signs on the floors of lumber carts failed to carch as much attention as the hang-tags. All signs used in the March and April tests concained.the message, 'Ask for FREE handling and use information on treated wood."

Research was conducted at an Atlanta, Ga., Home Depot chosen because of its high sales volume, location of all lumber on one aisle and dedicated lumber check-out counters. A total of 412 exit interviews were conducted at the check-out stands to help determine the best method of providing infonnation to consumers.

Planer Mill Fire

Sometimes bad luck comes by twos. Siskiyou Plumas Lumber Co., Quincy, Ca., had its planer mill roof collapse under a snow load Jan. 7. The building was rebuilt by late April.

Then on May 4 a $1 million fire completely desroyed the planer mill.

The sawmill and dry kiln on the 30 acre site were not damaged. The firm is a sister company to wholesaler Siskiyou Forest Products, Woodland, Ca

PVG To Lead Plastic Sales

Construction polymer demand will increase 4.14o per yeil to 15.5 billion lbs. in 1997 propelled by do-it-yourself and professional remodeling, renovation and addition markes. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will remain the dominant resin.

Resin-bonded wood, siding and flooring sales will expand 4.lVo uuaaally until 1997 , Tbe Freedonia Group predicts. Vinyl siding demand will grow 5.57o per annum.to 1.1 billion lbs. in 1997 paced by the replacement market.

Treated Wood Confidence Up

Fewer Americans have concerns about pressure treated wood for both home and public uses this year than last following a year of public outreach programs by the treated wood industry.

This year 83.3Vo of those surveyed had no concerns about home uses of treated wood as compared to 797o in 1992. T\e 77.9Vo with no concerns about public uses of treated wood in 1992 increased to824o in 1993.

AWPI product acceptance conunittee chairman Bill Crossman, Atlantic Wood Industries, Inc., commented; "I am encouraged by these results. We must continue to provide good,. solid and timely information about our products and our industry in response to consumer questions or concerns. I believe we've found th right combination of messages, communications methods and target audiences and that our progfiilns are working and must be broadened in the future."

Form Of The Future

PolySteel Forms, lightweight blocks of polystyrene said to create walls 507o stronger than conventional methods, are now available from 3.10 Insulated Forms.

Forms resemble large egg cartons composed of polystyrene, an excellent insulator, and have reinforced steel inside for additional support. Contractors install the fonns one on top of the other to create walls, similar to stacking building blocks. Funing srips, attached to the outside of the forms can be used to attach interior drywall or any exterior surface, such as briclq siding and stucco.

Used for above and below grade construction, they decrease the time needed to construct a building, weigh only 5 lbs. each, can be easily moved and lifted into place, cut to fit spaces with just a hand saw, and don't have to be removed once the concrete is poured.

Each fomr has a tongue and groove edge which helps it interlock tightty with other forms. The tight seal results in a clean, dust-free environment inside the building. The heavily insulated walls reportedly produce a soundproof environment, won't settle or crack, and are stronger than typical walls despite using 25-507o less concrete.

Lumber City Revamps Store

Seven-unit chain Lumber City has overhauled its largest store, changing the Santa Clarita (Valencia), Ca., location over to HWI's Do-it Center concept and renaming it The California Do-it Center.

If the experiment is successful, the other stores will be switched over to the new name and fomnt.

The first Do-it Center o open in the Los Angeles area, it underwent a fourmonth remodel to show off new inventory, new landscaping and a new look. "We have chosen to take this store and go to an updated home improvement store that will be competitive in temrs of quality and price," said ownerJess Ruf.

A grand reopening was held June 1l-13, featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony, rides on a 45-foot Ferris wheel, houdy prize drawings and free gifts, popcorn, balloons and lemonade.

Ruf said that the decision to reformat was not influenced by next year's opening of a nearby Home Depot His wholesale company, Neiman-Reed Lumber Co., Van Nuys, Ca., is unaffected by the retail chain's changes.

Plywood Theft Victims Get Defensive

As the Southern California truck and cargo thefts continue, lumber yards are devising new ways to avoid repeat performanc€s.

Late night June 11 thieves loaded four units of 3/8" CD plywood onto one of Buena Park Lumber's trucks, disassembled the yard's railroad gate and drove out down the railroad tracks, practically passing by a police s0ation. The truck was recovered a few days later, stripped of its radio, tools and load.

Buena Park Lumber, Buena Park, immediately installed low-cost kill switches on their trucks and is considering expanding its alarm beam systern to cover the entire yard.

After burglaries in May and June, Petennan Lumber, Fontana, also began rewiring its fleet's ignitions. They also joined other victims in reporting details of their case to the Lumber Association of Southern California which is compiling a database to aid a special L.A. Sheriff s Department task force (see The Merchant, June, p. 30).

Over Memorial Day weekend, $40,000 worth of hardwood plywood and lumber was stolen from Johnston Hardwood Lumber & Plywood, Cenitos. Dennis Johnston has installed fuel line shut-off, ignition coil wire and steering wheel disabling devices on their vehicles. But he realizes

tley're only deterrents to the experienced criminal.

Tim Reynolds, Shale Companies, Santa Ana, considers the key to be irmobilizing your own forklift since the thieves don't bring their own. "If they can't use your forklift" they can't steal your plywood," he said.

Shale now puts The Club steering wheel lock on all its trucks and forklifts, following a $40,000-50,000 plywood heist June 4 in which tlieves used one of Shale's trucks and two from the landscape wholesaler next door. One truck, last spotted over the Mexican border, has not been recovered. Said Reynolds, "My idea for the police is whenever you see a truck delivering plywood at 2 a.m., pull it over."
