Lowe's Goes 24x7

Matching its closest rival's move, Lowe's is now keeping 12 Eagle Hardware and Garden stores in western Washington open 24 hours a day. Stores in Arlington, Bellevue, Bremerton, Everett, Federal Way, Issaquah, Lynnwood, Mount Vernon. North Seattle, Puyallup, Tacoma and Tukwila last closed their doors April 28.

A month earlier, Home Depot converted to around-the-clock operations at the last of its 13 western Washington stores, many in the same cities as Eagle (see April, p. l8).

Wyoming MillTo Close

Pope & Talbot will permanently close its Newcastle, Wy., mill July 7.

Employing about 75 workers, the facility, which the firm purchased in 1989, annually produces 120 million bd. ft. "Over the past four years, the Forest Service has allowed only 75Vo of its planned volume under the Black Hills National Forest Plan to be harvested, making it impractical for us to maintain two separate operating facilities," said Michael Flannery, president and ceo.

Pope & Talbot will continue operating a nearby Spearfish, S.D., mill.

Trex To Expand Plants

Trex is upping capacity at its plants to keep up with demand for plastic decking.

The Fernley, Nv., facility will soon finish installation of manufacturing lines five and six in the existing 160,000-sq. ft. plant, to be followed by construction later this year of a 100,000-sq. ft. addition to accommodate six new lines, for a total of 12.

Edward W. Turner, Sr., 88, former owner, Canyon Home Center, Inc., Kent, Wa., died of congestive heart failure April 8.

L. Sterling Hanel, 83, retired founder, Hanel Lumber Co., Odell, Or., died May 23.

A lifetime Oregonian, he briefly worked for the U.S. Forest Service before beginning his long tenure in the lumber industry with Newell Brothers Lumber Co., Parkdale, Or., in 1937.

He founded Hanel Lumber in 1943 and ran the business until his retirement in 1993. The firm is now owned by Quality Veneer Lumber, Inc.

He was named Portland Wholesale Lumberman of the Year in 1986.

John Crawford Kettenring, 86, former owner, Battle Ground Lumber Co., Battle Ground, Wa., died March l0 in Vancouver, Wa.

A native of Vancouver and graduate of the University of Washington, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWll and commanded mine sweepers in the Sea of Japan. before retiring as a Rear Admiral.

A native of Alberta, Canada and a WWII veteran, he opened the mill in 1933 and ran Canyon Home Center until its sale in the late 1960s.

Jerry Roy Senske, 60, salesman, Grant Western Lumber Co., John Day, Or., died of cancer May I 1.

A native of Hillsboro. Or.. he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1962, then worked for lumber firms in California, Oregon and ldaho before joining Grant Western Lumber in November 1999.

Nel Esther Halvarson, 81, former president and ceo, Santa Ana Plywood and Door Co., Santa Ana, Ca., died from complications of Parkinson's disease April 19.

A resident of Seal Beach. Ca.. she and her husband, Herman, founded Santa Ana Plywood in 1956.

After her husband's death in 1989, she continued to run the operation until the firm closed in 1991.
