Reality Ciieck

Several environmental organizations are attempting to obstruct the sale of redwood lumber. Their effort is directed primarily against old growth redwood products and their target is the retail lumber dealers (see May, p. 38). Their claim is that our company is laying siege to 60,000 acres of virgin old growth redwood stands in the Headwaters Forest. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The Headwaters Forest is 3.000 acres of virgin old growth redwood and Douglas fir timber. It is permanently protected as part of a 7,500-acre nature preserve under the "Headwaters Forest Agreement." It was signed in September, 1996 by the federal govemment, State of California, The Pacific Lumber Co. and our parent com-

pany, Maxxam, Inc.

The Headwaters Forest is saved and, after l0 years of battle, that's where the problem begins for the radical environmental community. It has become their icon providing a clarion cry for attention and a source of revenue for them. And now it is saved. So what to do? For starters, they have moved the goal poststhey have inflated it to 60,000 acres and begun the scary story all over again. The radical environmental community likes a big story to keep the public running scared.

Let's look at the 60,000'acres outside the real Headwaters Forest. We have logged in it for over 100 years. Yet today it is composed of healthy second and third growth trees, many of which are over 160 ft. tall and 3 ft. or larger in diameter at breast height. It supports a wide variety of animals, coho salmon, steelhead trout and it provides quality lumber products on a continuing basis. Pretty scary stuff all right.

The boundary lines of the acreage as defined by the environmentalists don't form any "logical" ecological unit. They are defined by The Pacific Lumber Co.'s property lines which have evolved over the last 128 years. There is no scientific basis for selecting this area for preservation. Redwood is the most preserved commercial tree species on the planet. Over 350,000 acres have been set aside in state and federal parks,. forests, reserves and monuments.

The remaining 1.4 million acres of redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) comprise the most productive forest land in the United States. It is marketed and sold around the globe and, yes, some of it is residual old growth, which yields the highest quality lumber in all speciesnot just redwood. Old growth redwood is a very small percentage of today's harvest. However, all redwood mills produce some percentage of it, and its harvest presents no known threat to the preservation of the species. Under the oversight of the State of California and its mandated sustained yield timber harvest and the control of the federal government's Endangered Species Act, it does not present any undue or cataclysmic threat to anything except the environmental community's continuous need for crisisand revenue. They run a business also. So don't be duped by their efforts to shut down your businessthey are only trying to shore up their own.
