BD[T@RIAL

You're on my list

The problem is an old one. How does a company avoid hiring a person fired from an earlier job for theft or shoplifting? It's a sticky situation, because once the thief is hired, it can take months, even years, before an employer can remove the greedy hand from the corporate pocket.

In the past, retailers used local credit firms or just swapped information with friends and competitors to avoid hiring crooks. Now, thanks to computers and database sharing, it is possible for national as well as local firms to know before hiring that a prospective employee has taken money or merchandise.

Home Depot and the Target stores are two clients of Employment Screening Partners (ESP), a Bothell, Wa., firm that is a subsidiary of Deluxe Corporation, the country's largest check printer. Other major retailers are clients and also supply information to the database they all share.

The database is no collection of gossip. It contains only legally obtainable information and lists only cases involving a theft conviction or a state-

ment admitting theft.

A recent case of a young man caught shoplifr ing at a Target store illustrates how the system works. Subsequently, he applied for a job at a Home Depot in a nearby community. When Depot checked the database they found his name and the shoplifting incident at Target. He didn't get the job. Most employers in the system state on their job application that a prospective employee's name will be run through the database. The day after a name comes up, the individual is notified by ESP and provided a chance to correct any misinformation.

A side benefit to companies concerned about hiring illegal aliens is that the database will detect a phony Social Security number, thus unmasking even the most sophisticated counterfeit documents.

The key here is consequences. Thieves will know their name could be listed, shutting off job opportunities. It's all about avoiding problems before thev start.

Ganadian trade agreement has U.S. retailers battling manufacturers

f AST APRIL. as the last details of the U.S.-Canadian I-lsoftwood lumber treaty finally fell into place, domestic lumber producers, who accused Canada of subsidizing its timber industry, envisioned an end to 15 years of squabbling. Little did they realize that the international truce would trigger a civil war.

One year after the pact went into effect, U.S. lumber producers find themselves accused by their customers (from wholesaler and retailer to contractor and builder) of driving up prices by limiting free trade. From April 1996 to April 1997, lumber prices have increased from $354 MBF to $463 MBF.

Since the agreement, the price of building a typical new 2,000-sq. ft. home has increased by as much as $2,000, or annual starts nationwide by more than $2 billion. Reportedly, a typical flat deck in April 1995 would have cost American consumers $1,050. By April 1997, the costs had increased by $286 or nearly 30Vo.

The trade agreement's critics have joined forces, under the guise of ensuring that future generations aren't priced out of the American Dream. The National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association, National Association of Home Builders and Wood Truss Council have teamed up to form the Alliance for Affordable American Homes. An early order of business was filing a letter with U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky asking for five specific modifications to the timber pact, namely:

(1) Allow mills to carry-forward and carry-back a portion of their no-fee and low-fee quota allocations.

(2) Change the quarterly-based fee system to depend only on the individual mill's shipments.

(3) Accelerate distribution of trigger price volume.

(4) Set a step-wise trigger instead of the current single

pnce mgger.

(5) Exempt economy, cedar and white pine lumber. On May 1, Representative Jack Quinn (R-NY) introduced the Americans for Affordable Housing Act, which would reverse provisions attached to the 1994 GATT legislation by adding Canadian lumber practices to the categories in U.S. trade law that are considered "non-countervailable."

In reality, retailers and other critics aren't nearly as concerned about high prices as they are about price stability. If margins are maintained, high prices can benefit the entire distribution chain. But unpredictable price spikes can devastate companies, such as truss manufacturers, that must quote jobs weeks or months in advance.

"My company has spent many years developing a business of custom buildings," says John Herring, A-1 Roof Trusses, West Palm Beach, Fl. "We cannot price and engineer a job in less than 90 to 120 days. We quote the job in advance, and then the lumber price spikes, and we take the hit. The lumber price volatility has put us in a position of fighting with our customers."

According to a Wood Truss Council of America survey, truss manufacturers blamed lumber price volatility for (Please turn to next page)

reducing profits in 1996 by approximately $344.25 million. "Last year was the strongest construction year in the last several years, with 1.47 million housing starts. This should have provided our industry with reasonable profits for the year," said Kirk Grundahl, WTCA executive director. "Unfortunately, due to political conditions that caused the Canadian lumber quota which were beyond our control and the fact that lumber represents about 507o of the cost of our product, we suffered major economic losses."

"The lumber industry has no idea how devastatins this

has been to our business," agreed Pat Keller, v.p., Truss Components, Inc., Peerless Park, Mo., which has put off plans to open a new plant this year. "Nothing prepared us for the price spike in November. We expected the price of lumber would rise, but businesses can't survive these types of price spikes. We were assured by the U.S. Trade Representative that this wouldn't happen, that U.S. lumber manufacturers could meet any demand surges, and as such, not to woffy about the quota."

A major market concern is that as the cost increases are passed on to the consumer, the consumer will be less able to buy housing. "This will lead to a market that is recessionary and will hurt truss manufacturers even mors,"

Keller explained.

Of course, there are other reasons for the price spikes besides the quota (see story below). One of the greatest is the lockup of federal timberlands, which has placed domestic producers at a disadvantage and continues to threaten the steady flow of supply.

Unfortunately, many retailers, contractors and builders are short-sighted. They all but ignore the environmental crisis, reasoning that ifthey're not the ones actually cutting the trees, it's not their fight.

Said one multi-state lumber dealer association executive who is mobilizing his members in the civil war over the trade pact: "We wanted a fight that was winnable."

Gary Donnelly, president, National Lumbr & BuiHing Material Dealers Association, Washington, D.C. :

"ln our opinion, the effect has been much higher lumber prices for U.$. consumers, greatly increased profits to U.S. producers, increased volatility in the lumber markets and a scarcity of some products. lf lumber dealers got together to raise prices, they would all go to jailfor violating the anti-lrusl laws of this country. Members of the Coalition for Fair Lumber lmports, using U.S. trade laws, have found a way to circumvent those laws."

Bobert H. Hunt, president, Western Wood Products Association, Portland, Or. :

'The major etfect on lhe lumber markel and prices in 1996 was demand and rumors, not the U.S.-Canadian softvvood trade agreement. This past year resulted in a near record for U.S. sottwood consumption at 50.53 billion M. fi. The record set'in 1987 was 50.56 billion ft. Our largest market-housing, was also up over 9%.

"Builder and dealer organizations claim the agreement has increased the volatility of lumber markets to record levels. However, a review of price trends in recent years does not support that conclusion. The price volatility in 1996 was lower than three years ago, when there was no agreement.

"Also, il should be pointed out that Canadian imporls hit an all-time high in 1996 under the agreement, with very little ol that volume affected by duties. So, at best, the agreement had only a minor impact on prices and nothing on volumes.

"As the 1996 agreement rumors are put to bed, the supply/demand outlook for '1997 is positive, with less volatility and good business for dealers "

Dr. Leonard M. Guss, president, Leonard Guss Associates Inc., Woodinville, Wa.:

"The eflect has been pretry much as expected. U.S, production in 1996 was up 5olo ov€r production in 1995, but still below production in 1994. Massive public timber withdrawals in the Pacific Northwest, and the heavy rate of cutting in the $outheast almost guarantee a lid on U.S. production volume, tado agreement or no trade agreement. However, the impact on prices is obvious, .Prices for slandard conslruction lumber items are al or near their historical highs. Far from discouraging Canadian imports, softwood lumber from Canada suryed into the U.S. lo take advantage of this price umbrella, reaching a new peak of 17.8 billion bd. ft. in 1996, from over'17 billion in'1995. Canadian lumber producers cheerfully paid the $50 or $1tD per MBF penalty for shipments over quota, and chortled all the way to lhe bank. Meanwhile, house conslruction prices \i,ent up for the U.S. consumer-as it was meant to do. The only impact of the trade agreement is more revenue for U.S. lumber mills."

H. Daniel Pincus, Hilton Head, S.C., home builder, and presi-

'The only people benefiting from the Canada-U.S. lumber agreement are the timber barons, The duty on lumber from Canada is essentially a tax 0n homeownership lhat is costing homebuyers billions of dollars a year."

dent of the NalionalAssociation of Home Builders:

Metal roofs go residential

HE POPULARITY of steel roofing in home construction has grown dramatically in recent years.

Today, hundreds of builders across the United States and Canada are using steel roofing for all types of single-family homes, multi-family dwellings, retirement homes and affordable housing projects.

While metal roofs are estimated to account for only about 5Vo of residential roofing in the U.S., that figure is expected to grow to l0%o by the end of the decade.

"There is little doubt that steel roofing is making inroads in the residential marketplace, with tremendous growth potential," says the American Iron and Steel Institute's Richard Haws.

Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of residential prepainted metal roofing. First, the increased use of residential steel framing in new construction has permitted builders to experiment with the use of pre-painted metal roofing, along with the framing. Lower insurance rates have also contributed to this trend.

Second, the various natural disasters that have occurred in the United States in the past few years have allowed metal roofing to prove itself under adverse conditions. Hurricanes, earthquakes, firestorms and floods across different parts of the country caused major roof failures. According to the American Iron and Steel

Institute, metal roofs performed remarkably well in comparison to conventional roofing products, and prepainted metal is now being considered in areas where natural disasters are known to occur.

Finally, landfills refusing to accept torn-off conventional roofing materials (or charging very high dumping fees for such materials) has contributed to the increased usage of metal roofing in residential construction.

Although the metal roof is recyclable as steel scrap, the primary environmental advantage is that a metal roof can often be installed over an existing shingle or tile roof, without having to tear off the existing roof.

"Metal roofs are much lighter than other roofing types, so there's never any concern about structural damage caused by the additional weight," says Steve Kelchlin, West Coast Roofing, San Diego, Ca. "In fact, reroofing with metal in many instances lightens the load because in wet conditions, a metal roof weighs less than the rainsoaked wood shingles or shakes it covers."

In addition, many reroofing applications permit added insulation between the old and new roof, resulting in a quiet, environmentally friendly system that can reduce internal energy consumption by furnaces and air conditioners.

Another advantase of steel roofins

is its versatility. Metal roofing is available in a vast assortment of designs to suitjust about any aesthetic requirement, including high and low slopes and angled, curved and mansard roofs. At the same time, its finish provides protection from the problems that can affect wood and asphalt, such as splitting, cracking, curling and warping.

Besides its strength and durability, steel roofing provides lower maintenance and greater fire resistance. It has received an A or B rating from the three model U.S. building codes, as well as the National Building Code of Canada. Many roof assemblies have also received high ratings from the Underwriters Laboratorv and Factorv Mutual.

Story at a Glance

Why steel roofs are making a dent in the residential market basic metalroof designs.

Some of the basic design categories include :

Standing Seam Roofs - These designs are characterized by their linear shadow patterns. Seams vary from flat, hidden seams to wide battens. The height and width of these ribs, as well as their color and solar orientation, will express a broad spectrum of aesthetic expressions.

Tile Designs - Available in a wide variety of colors and textures, these prepainted metal panels create the appearance of clay or concrete tiles. Their versatile design is a major reason for metal's growing popularity in the residential market.

Shingle Designs - Metal roofs can also simulate slate, as well as wood shingles and shakes. These panels are often embossed with a texture or coated with natural stone chips.

Contractor David Huffman, D&R Roofing, Springdale, Ar., knows that metal roofing can be lucrative, but admits that it may not be for everyone. "Metal roofs present a number of challenges that are not required for more traditional roofing installations," says Huffman. "You need a skilled crew capable of working with a whole new set of tools and installation procedures. Of course, the upside is that you're putting on a technically advanced roofing system with greater profit margins on every job."

High-end trends of vinyl siding

fN PART, vinyl siding owes its popIularity to developments that make it look less and less like vinyl.

In addition to colors and textures that mimic natural wood, new shapes, styles, accessories and installation techniques are helping to make vinyl siding appear more like "vinyl carpentry."

Greater availability of traditionally crafted decorative trim to complement vinyl siding provides a wider, more versatile selection of design touches with a finished appearance. Vinyl siding can then be used in a greater variety of architectural situations, since the completed jobs don't have to look like ordinary vinyl siding trimmed with J-channels.

"Decorative trim can make the difference between an average house and a gorgeous home," says Rob Long, marketing manager for CertainTeed's Vinyl Building Products Group. "It accentuates the lines of a house, creates a traditionally crafted appearance, and gives a home greater curb appeal."

New trim. such as wider lineals, outside corner systems, corner posts and exterior crown moldings, helps eliminate telltale J-channels and unwoodlike details that make the average siding installation shout "vinyl" to the neighborhood.

Another major design trend quickly growing in tandem with vinyl car-

pentry among remodelers is the application of two or more vinyl siding styles on one structure or one wall. This reproduces the texture and color of natural materials in a dynamic visual pattern and imparts appealing character to the structure.

Vinyl half-round shingles, for example, may be used effectively alone, in combination with other shingles, or even with other styles of siding. They can be used in a traditional style in high gables, with standard shingles or lap siding below. They can be used to form an accent strip between two contrasting types of siding, or can even be used in full wall treatments for an exotic effect.

According to Long, vinyl has been the leader in re-siding applications since the early 1980s, and its use continues to increase. "We've just reached a new level in the development of vinyl siding systems," he says. "Right now, remodelers can take advantage of the burgeoning vocabulary of products to create unique designs for their customers. It's a sales opportunity that competitive remodelers are using to build their businesses."

The differences in material costs between an ordinary vinyl re-siding job and one that has the appeal of vinyl carpentry is very small. The difference between finishing with Jchannels and accessories or finishing

with decorative trim would amount to around $200 for an average house. So, for a job with a total installed cost of, say, $6,000, the difference would be about 3%o-but the customer gets a look that, in wood, could cost thousands of dollars more. Furthertnore, once the installers have learned a few new techniques, installation remains quick and easy.

The same small cost differences apply in the mixing of siding products and profiles. In fact, mixing of super premium and standard products can result in a design that has more appeal

and drama but costs less than a re-siding using a premium siding.

"As vinyl has become more natural in appearance, with textures, colors and trim that provide the beauty, style, and finished look of high quality wood products, it has become more desirable for use even at the most exclusive levels of remodeling," Long SAVS,

Southern pine closes in on doors and windows

IOORS and windows are among Llthe markets southern pine is eyeing as it expands its usage westward.

Over the past five years, many prehangers, millwork houses and distributors have switched to southern pine because of its competitive price, stability, strength and versatility both as a fingerjointed and solid wood species for door and window frames, jambs, casing and brick moulds.

Merit Millwork, Houston, Tx., "pioneered" the use of southern pine lumber for door jambs five years ago. Today, according to Merit's Jim Darling, "we're using more southern pine than ever."

Darling says that Merit first began using southern pine for exterior door frame stock and brick moulding. "This market was dominated by West Coast species but we began using southern pine because of its availability and competitive cost," he says.

He notes that now several southern pine manufacturers are cutting and drying lumber stock especially for the millwork industry. "We've expanded our use of fingerjointed southern pine to interior door stock and door casing," Darling says.

Merit Millwork saves about $1 per door by using southern pine rather than radiata pine. Darling adds that southern pine has been well accepted by Merit Millwork's customers, and is building a reputation for high quality.

Many door manufacturers, such as Lone Star Plywood, Houston, attribute the rise to improved production and drying techniques that have helped solve grain raise or warpage problems which formerly affected southern

pine lumber used for door frames. Last year, Lone Star spent $100,000 to expand its elaborate showroom where all kinds of exterior and interior doors are on display for visiting architects, builders, remodel-

ing contractors and homeowners.

Another reason for southern pine's increased presence in this market is the uncertain supply and price in western and hardwood lumber species. Several producers manufacture a clear, solid stain grade, a clear fingerjointed paint grade, and a No. 2 salvage grade.

Another alternative, radiata pine, is trying to become a factor in the marketplace, but many manufacturers still prefer the strength, price, and superior screw-holding and machinability of southern pine.

Rafe Hagel, Burns Morris Stewart Inc., Nacogdoches, Tx., a national supplier to the door industry, says that the growth of the metal door market has also helped stimulated demand for southern pine frames and jambs. "Steel doors have to be painted, so it's logical to use paint grade, fingerjointed southern pine jambs and frames with them," Hagel says.

Bison Building Materials' Houston, Tx., display center illustrates the growing trend toward southern pine door frames and jambs among architects, contractors, remodelers, builders and homeowners.

"About 98Vo of our exterior doors have southern pine frames and jambs," explains a Bison spokesperson. "Our customers like the fingerjointed stock because we deliver it to them already primed, ready for final finishing."

Bison, which caters primarily to the builder and remodeling contractor, switched to southern pine from other exterior door frame species about four years ago, and has had good customer acceptance.

Too Many Trade Shows?

Eighteen leading building and plumbing product manufacturers seek to consolidate the many industry trade shows into a single, world class North America "super show" by the year 2000.

"For some time. manufacturers have been concerned with the excessive number of trade shows in the U.S. catering to plumbing and building products," said Richard W. Church, chairman of newly formed Committee for Industrv Trade Show Consolidation and president of the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute. "The proliferation of these shows dilutes their effectiveness and makes it difficult and costly for foreign buyers to attend, resulting in lost international marketing and sales opportunities for North American manufacturgrs."

For example, no comparable U.S. show draws a fraction of the 230.000 visitors who attended a recent bi-annual international sanitary and heating trade show in Germany.

"To the best of our knowledge, not a single species has become extinct in North America due to forestrv."

Show Slanders Treated Wood

The wood treating industry is fuming after the syndicated tv show Hard Copy enoneously reported that pressure treated playground equipment poses a threat to the safety ofchildren.

The May 8 segment, "Playing with Poison," did not feature any industry representative nor any scientist who has evaluated treated wood. It ignored Consumer Product Safety Commission, California State Dept. of Health Services and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency studies which have proven that CCA treated wood poses negligible risk to humans, plants and animals.

Apparently, the main Hard Copy source was the editor of Organic Gardening, a magazine opposed to any use ofpressure heated wood.

Yet, according to the American Wood Preservers Institute, not one of the reported 150,000 playground injuries each year result from wood preservatives.

In its research, Hard Copy sent 16 questions to the EPA, but then ignored the agency's answers and opinion that CCA poses no threat to children playing on treated wqpd. EPA's 16 answers have been posted on AWPI's Web site (www.awpi.org).

Potlatch Moving To Spokane

Potlatch Corp. will relocate its headquarters, including top officers and administration staff, from San Francisco, Ca., to Spokane, Wa.

The move will permit Potlatch, which has 6,700 employees in rural areas of ldaho, Arkansas and Minnesota, to promote workers who previously could not afford to relocate to San Francisco, where housing prices are about 2-l/2 times the national average.

Potlatch has narrowed its choices to one of three 18,000 to 20,000-sq. ft. buildings in downtown Spokane, but over the last 18 months considered 12 cities, including Boise, Id.; Salt Lake City, Ut., and Kansas City, Mo.

Spokane held an edge due to its proximity to Potlatch's Lewiston, Id., offices, where 70 employees will stay on as part of a "split headquarters" arrangement.

WindodDoor Energy Ratings

The National Fenestration Rating Council has adopted heating and cooling ratings that will make shopping for windows, doors and skylights easier for consumers and builders.

The ratings provide two numbers describing each product's energy performance during the winter and the summer. The non-dimensional numbers, given on a scale of I to 5, allow users to compare different products' energy performance quickly and accurately.

Over the next several months, NFRC will develop certification procedures for manufacturers to provide heating and cooling rating information, which are expected to appear on labels by the end ofthe year.

UL Listings Benefit OSB

Two new fire-rated wall designs recently approved by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. should increase use of plywood and OSB sheathing in multifamily and nonresidential construction markets, according to APA-The Engineered Wood Association.

New UL Design U356 recognizes '7116" or thicker OSB or plywood sheathing with any type of code-approved siding, and with 5/8" Type X gypsum wall board on the interior face

Revised Design U344, which already listed plywood, now permits 15/32" or thicker OSB as an accepted wall sheathing material.

Washington State's Long Beach Boardwal k...Tourist Attraction And Environmental Goup

I OIrIG Beach, Washington, boasts b the first ocean-beach boardwalk in the Pacific Northwest and sets environmental precedents. The boardwalk is the result ofcareful design, engineering, and construction guaranteed toprotect the fragile dunes and dunegrass boarding the picturesque shore. The boardwalk weaves in and out for 2,300 ft., following the natural contours of the precious dunes. Although it took just three months to construct, the Long Beach Boardwalk was five years in the planning, according to Nabiel Shaw, Project Coordinator.

Aptly named, LongBeach laysclaim to the world's second longest white sand beach, 28 miles in length, and is located on the southwest corner of the Long Beach Peninsula where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.

Aesthetically pleasing, the Long Beach Boardwalk immediately gamered the unabashed support of townspeople, tourists, and environmentalists alike. This was an interesting occurrence, as the Pacific Northwest is perhaps among the most sensitive of areas to the compatibility of the environment and the ecosystems, according to Dick Theil of .Gray & Osborne, Inc., Seattle and Yakima, WA, Consulting Engineers for the project.

"This unusual and automatic acceptance of the boardwalk by the public was a most interesting part of the project," Theil said. "Initially there were fears that the boardwalk would be too imposing and interfere with the skyline. However, the feedback was positive after people saw the boardwalk was not obtrusive, was rugged looking, and fit right into the environment."

Theil said the wood chosen for the project was Douglas fir and the wood preservative treatment recommended by Gray & Osbome was Chemonite@ (ACZA - ammoniacal copper zinc anenate).

"We specifically mentioned Chemonite because we were lookingfor a 50+ year life for the boardwalk," Theil said. "This is a particularly corrosive environment with a lot of salt water, sand and saltv winds. Generallv we

would not specify a tradename but in this case we did. Chemonite is pretty popular here in the Pacific Northwest."

The Chemonite-treated lumber was

supplied by the Wyckoff Company, Seattle, WA, to the building contractor, Quigg Brothers McDonald, Inc. of Aberdeen, WA.

For over half a century, Chemonite has provided unparalleled protection of Douglas fir, and other hard-to-treat wood, against decay and wood-destroying insects.

Buyer Works Best Off Beaten Path

His is not your typically hectic lumber trading office. Until the ring of the telephone breaks his peace, Mel Love sits on his deck, sipping a warm drink and watching a herd of deer across the tranquil countryside of Oregon's remote Summer Lake.

As a Northwest representative for California-based Panelized Structures, Inc., Love buys lumber for commer-

cial and industrial roof construction jobs. His location does not matter, only his phone line, 800 line, fax line and computer line to connect him to his company's other computers.

When Panelized Structures bids a job, Love is sent an estimate of the lumber and plywood required only for the roof. His job is to find the mill with the best price, as shipped directly to thejob site.

Love quotes Douglas fir for jobs in the West and southern yellow pine in the South for projects as large as three to six carloads.

When the market is good, Love may speculate and store inventory at a Salem, Or., warehouse. "It's up to me to gamble on the lumber and plywood markets. I watch fluctuations and changes in the market, and write the purchase orders from here," he says. "Connections is what it's all about-knowing who makes what, and who to call. Not all mills make the material with the fiber stress rating that we use."

Love has seen the more frenzied side of the industry as well. He worked his way toward a teaching degree at the University of Oregon, but his first job offer to teach would have meant a pay cut from what he was earning part-time at a building supply company. He never taught.

At age 23, he bought into a lumber yard and began wholesaling. Through the years, Love grew the business amid high stress he compounded by racing cars during his spare time. At age 34, he suffered his first heart attack.

He and his wife left the Willamette Valley for eastern Oregon, and after years of struggling seems to have finally found a middle ground.

"With cellular phones we can go anywhere and still take care of business," says Love, who has been known to buy a load of lumber in the middle of a cattle brandins. "Our quality of life is worth staying here."

Cedar Siding Expansion

Bevel siding, the most popular style of siding, is now available in a great variety of materials-pressed composite wood chips, cement, vinyl, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, all trying to imitate what nature does so easily.

But at least one producer is investing in the real thing-tight-knot western red cedar.

Lazy S Lumber, which specializes in kiln-dried or green bevel siding and

decking lumber in a variety of sizes, recently installed two new dry kilns at its mill in Beavercreek, Or. According to Lazy S president Ralph Schmidt, the custom-designed double track, natural gas kilns have a capacity of 100,000 bd. ft. per kiln which allows them to meet increased cedar siding demand.

To add value, Lazy S has added pre-primed Ready Prime to its kilndried siding product line. Pre-priming the siding on the face and back reduces on-site prep time and helps protect the beauty ofcedar.

Sierra-Pacific Buys L-P Tract

Louisiana-Pacific has agreed to sell approximately 38,000 acres of Northern California timberland to Sierra-Pacific Industries for $50 million.

Since the timberland, known as the Feather Falls tract, is located in the northeast side of the Sacramento Valley and Louisiana-Pacific's remaining California sawmills are along the coast, L-P had been selling timber harvested from the land to other companies.

Moulding & Millwork Merchandising Tips

When designing your moulding merchandising program, GeorgiaPacific advises to keep the following goals in mind:

. Create a self-serve environment to minimize the need for sales assistance. Maximize visibility of bin signage. Help the consumer identify the product needed for his particular project. Use section signs to group

various moulding uses under major categories, such as ceiling treatments and base treatments, and profile cards to show what a profile looks like and where it is most often used.

. Promote moulding project ideas including built-up moulding designs.

. Provide d-i-yers with pocketsized, step-by-step instructions on finishing and installing moulding.

Water-based acrylic paint looks great for a full 10-15 years on MaxiPlank and MaxiPanel. Unlike cedar or manufactured wood that need painting far too often, paint won't crack, peel or blister on our superior fiber cement siding. Remember us when you want that first paint job to last a lot longer.

REALITY CIIECK

Several environmental organizations are attempting to obstruct the sale of redwood lumber. Their effort is directed primarily against old growth redwood products and their target is the retail lumber dealers (see May, p. 38). Their claim is that our company is laying siege to 60,000 acres of virgin old growth redwood stands in the Headwaters Forest. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The Headwaters Forest is 3.000 acres of virgin old growth redwood and Douglas fir timber. It is permanently protected as part of a 7,500-acre nature preserve under the "Headwaters Forest Agreement." It was signed in September, 1996 by the federal govemment, State of California, The Pacific Lumber Co. and our parent com-

pany, Maxxam, Inc.

The Headwaters Forest is saved and, after l0 years of battle, that's where the problem begins for the radical environmental community. It has become their icon providing a clarion cry for attention and a source of revenue for them. And now it is saved. So what to do? For starters, they have moved the goal poststhey have inflated it to 60,000 acres and begun the scary story all over again. The radical environmental community likes a big story to keep the public running scared.

Let's look at the 60,000'acres outside the real Headwaters Forest. We have logged in it for over 100 years. Yet today it is composed of healthy second and third growth trees, many of which are over 160 ft. tall and 3 ft. or larger in diameter at breast height. It supports a wide variety of animals, coho salmon, steelhead trout and it provides quality lumber products on a continuing basis. Pretty scary stuff all right.

The boundary lines of the acreage as defined by the environmentalists don't form any "logical" ecological unit. They are defined by The Pacific Lumber Co.'s property lines which have evolved over the last 128 years. There is no scientific basis for selecting this area for preservation. Redwood is the most preserved

commercial tree species on the planet. Over 350,000 acres have been set aside in state and federal parks,. forests, reserves and monuments.

The remaining 1.4 million acres of redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) comprise the most productive forest land in the United States. It is marketed and sold around the globe and, yes, some of it is residual old growth, which yields the highest quality lumber in all speciesnot just redwood. Old growth redwood is a very small percentage of today's harvest. However, all redwood mills produce some percentage of it, and its harvest presents no known threat to the preservation of the species. Under the oversight of the State of California and its mandated sustained yield timber harvest and the control of the federal government's Endangered Species Act, it does not present any undue or cataclysmic threat to anything except the environmental community's continuous need for crisisand revenue. They run a business also. So don't be duped by their efforts to shut down your businessthey are only trying to shore up their own.

hen ownenhip of J.H. Baxter passed into the hands of the Baxter family's fourth generation, we adopted a new philosophy based on a simple question:

Wat are our customers'needs?

It's true that we have a rich tradition of customer service in our 100-year history but wele not the same company we were a century ago. [n fact, we're not the same company we were yesterday. At J.H. Baxter, that's how success is measuredby meeting your needs better than the day before.

Sure, it's frrn to look back. The U.S. forest products industry had barely been born 100 years ago when Baxter lumber schooners began sailing up and down the West Coast. That's when the Baxter family business originally became an industry leader. After generations of prudent investrnent in nahue's most renewable r€source, our ongoing dedication and effective management of company timberlands continue to provide financial strengh and stability for generations to come.

But J.H. Baxter refuses to rest on its laurels. We believe that our continued success depends on grving you technically advanced treating options, service, reliabiliry and quality products. We also offcr value-added services tailored to your needs.

Timber Management, Wood Treatment, and Chemical Licensing. Our long-term success in these areas is the direct result ofinsisting that all business relationships be based on integrity, quality, customer service, and value. That's the only way we do business.

We're proud of the long{erm relationships we've developed with our customers. And wete proud ofthe diverse interests our customers rep-

resent - from designers to end users. But wele most proud of the fact that you trust us to help you meet your unique wood-preserving needs.

You are the people we keep in focus. To whom we dedicatethenext I00years.
