Victor M. Carter. 94. former owner of Builders Emporium, Van Nuys, Ca., died of natural causes April 3 in Los Angeles.
A native of Russia, at age 19 he acquired a fledgling lumber and hardware store in Van Nuys in 1949 and grew it into one of the nation's top home improvement chains. He sold the business in 1956, presumably to retire, but later owned and operated Republic Pictures for eight years.
As a philanthropist, he aided such organizations as the United Way, which created the Victor M. Carter Humanitarian Award, and the City of Hope cancer research center in Duarte, Ca., which he served as president and chairman.
Norris E. Peterson. 89. owner of United Lumber & Hardware, Brighton, Co., died March24 in Brighton.
A long-time member of the Mountain States Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association for several years, he began operating United Lumber in 1946.
David "Dave" Norman Woolf. 53. a millwork salesman at Cascade Wood Products, White City, Or., died March l9 in Eagle Point, Or.
Mr. Woolf started his career in the lumber industry at Dee Lumber Co., Redding, Ca. After graduating from Chico State University in l9'74, he joined the sales team at American Forest Products, San Francisco, Ca., before transferring to their offices in Stockton, Ca., for 20 years, and later Prineville. Or.. in 1995 as sales manager. He joinedCascade in 1999.
John Rogers, 85, long-time Northern California lumberman. died March 20 in Fort Bragg, Ca.
Mr. Rogers began working in the lumber industry in 1938 at Union Lumber Co., Fort Bragg. He also worked for Boise Cascade and, eventually Georgia-Pacific Corp., where he retired in 1983.
He was also a World War II veteran. serving in the U.S. Navy.
Robert "Skip" Bertram Audiss, 70, of American Lumber, Arvada, Co., died of cancer February 20 in Phoenix, Az.
He was a member of the Mountain States Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association from 1957 until the late 1990s. Hope Lumber acquired American Lumber in 2000.
Pat Moore, 55, harvest and marketing manager for Potlatch Corp.'s hybrid poplar plantation in Boardman, Or., died from pancreatic cancer Feb. 19 in Richland, Or.
Mr. Moore entered the forest products industry in the early 1970s with Scott
Paper in the Seattle, Wa., market, and then spend about l0 years in logging equipment sales in the Eugene, Or., area before joining Potlatch in the mid-1990s.

At the time of his death. he was a member of Western Hardwood Association's board of directors.
Robert A. Junker, 79, a welder/fabricator for Georgia-Pacific, Fort Bragg, Ca., died March 28 in Fort Bragg.
Mr. Junker served on the destroyer U.S.S. Saterlee on D-Day in Normandy, France, while he was in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In the mid-1940s, he joined Union Lumber Co., Fort Bragg, working in several positions including woods operations. He later spent many years at G-P, where he worked until his retirement.
