Get Them Hooked

nNE of the most important things accom- r-/ plished by a major promotion such as May's Natiorwl llome lrnprouetnent Month is that it brings new people to the concept of improving their own home.

Once a man or woman successfully completes even the simplest remodeling task, you've got them hooked. Inevitably, their area of interest expands and your possibility of making a bigger sale increases proportionately.

Illustrating a special feature inside this month's issue is a shot of a birdhouse resting on a home handyman's work bench. If our mythical do-it.yoursel{er can struggle through the construction of this somewhat less than monumental task, he is going to be pretty well pleased with himself. Mythical wife will prob. ably mumble to herself something to thc effect that, o'I didn't know the big slob had it in him."

Continuing the hypothesis, it seems reasonable to guess that she then will conclude that if he can do that, there are a number of other fix.up projects he can and should begin.

His beginning can be your beginning too. You

probably have his name and address from tlre sale. A regular program of direct mail designed for a general audience will sustain his enthusiasm for what he has done and will likely generate interest in something new,

The cardinal rule is to keep the project simple. The majority of the new people are not apt to be handy with tools. The greatest proportion of our population are city people. They didn't grow up in the country where people are more likely to work with tools and know how to handle materials.

Their inexperience is no matter, really. What counts is that you have been able to get them in and once started they are unlikely to quit. The reason is obvious, the doing of the project is fun {or many, and everyone likes the results.

With all the publicity for this month's pro. motion you'll get some new people in asking some incredibly dumb questions. Turn up your patience, listen care{ully and answer them in simple, non-technical terms.

It may be a long haul, but they could well become, along with millions like them, the biggest customers we have for lumber and building ma. terials.

THE Masonite Corp., one of the r old pros in the mass merchandising of home building materials, firmly believes in the continuing use of sales aids at the retail level.

Says the firm's communications di' rector Ray Larson, "We are always striving to have our products displayed in an attractive, attentiongetting manner because we know it pays off in additional sales for our dealers."

A good example of sales-aids at work is Masonite dealer All-State Plywood Inc., the largest independent in the San Franeisco bay area. AllState recently opened a new 100,000 sq. ft. retail yard in Oakland.

'oAll-State served its customers' interests and needsr" said Larson, t'by having a mass display of our prefinished panels neatly arranged on 20 A-frame dispensers. These unique units, 48" wide, 50' deep and 96" high, hold 100 4xB ft. panels, 50 on a side.to

Bill Sheridan, president of All-State Plywood, notes "The public goes for the mass display of 20 units in one Iarge sales area, especiallysince everything is neat and the product is visible."

All-State used 20 of these dispensers to give potential customers the feeling that All-State is a volume merchandiser and that it carries a complete selection of paneling.

Sherida^n also said that he is placing an order for 20 to 30 more panel dispensers for All-State Plywood's retail operation in San Francisco.

Another sales-aid that Masonite offers to its local dealers is a paneling counter display, which since its intro. duction four years agq has served

15,000 retail lumber and building materials dealers plus builders, banks, and savings and loan institutions.

Paneling displays are all-important part of plywood retailer's sales approach. Plenty of choices (and elbow room) enfsrce customer impression of having enough selection from which to make a good choice,

Hundreds of dealers in the West are using this model to build sales.

The paneling counter display, or "product mover" as many dealers call it, can be set on a counter or, with a converter, on the floor. It cnntains I2t' x 20" sample size panels of the company's full wall panel line.

The counter unit allows each display panel to be rotated for accessibility and easy selection. The display measures 30" wide, 30" deep and 30' high. Of the 15,000 in use, 6,000 have been converted to floor use.

A recent experience by a lumber wholesaler indicates the impact of the display. The wholesaler stocked a trial

package of Surfstone, a new paneling, but found little demand until the 12" x 20' pieces for the counter display arrived and were inserted, The wholesaler's supply was quickly depleted due to dealer orders, and several repeat supplies have come and gone since.

A FFINCE is a lriend to man. His A hour" is his haven, and a fence makes it all the more so. It defines his realm, extends his privacy, secludes his garden, keeps tots and pets in bounds or out, reduces noise, softens the wind.

It's no wonder fences hold a high place on the homeowner's hit parade of improvement projects. And they're high on the list of sales-minded building material dealers, too.

Putting up a fence can be one of the simplest o{ do-it-yourself projects. Selling the customer some posts, boards and nails perhaps ought to take care of his needs-but it doesn't.

As in everything else, W'estern homeowners don't all want the same fence. Fences once were mostly decorative, and that called for a variety of patterns in lumber. Today add the function of providing privacy, and this translates into more volume of standard cuts.

The homeowner often needs help in deciding on a style of fence or screen. Full-scale sections of various basic styles are highly efiective, and at the same time can dress up the store. outside and in.

Customers need help, too, with lumber grades and sizes, finishes and such construction details as how to set fence posts and fasten rails to them. There is much concern about durability of fence material and finishes.

Camying in stock pressure-treated posts of any Western lumber species is a good way to gain fence-builder confidence, since home soaking or brushine is far from sure.

WooJ fences are beine stained or even not finished at all, Homeowners see this in their shelter magazines, but they need the dealer's assurances. More people now are applying semitransparent exterior stain or soaking material in a clear water-repellent preservative, then allowing it to weather naturally. Either way, main. tenance is reduced.

A practical variation in a board fence is building garden storage with it, using the main fence as the back wall. A popular version is shown in a WW"PA color idea booklet and plan sheet.

QO many of the "dos" and o'don'ts" u of selling building materials have been stated and restated for so long, that it sometimes would appear unnecessary to cover the same ground again. However, while the more aggressive dealers are following the essential rules for successful selling, there still are many who miss the boat simply because they are doing business the way they were 20 or even 30 years ago.

While I am speaking mainly about carpeting in this article, what applies to carpet squares-and this, after all, is what holds the big potential for the dealerapplies to many other materials as well. Let's divide our subject into two categories-selling technique and know-how, and the effective use of displays and literature.

Your sales reps must understand what they are selling. If the staff doesn't know the strengths and at. tributes of their rnaterials, they simply are not going to be- efiective salesmen. Bring your group together and have manufacturers' salesmen give a talk, or hold a clinic and demonstration where your people can ask questions and get answers. Armed with knowledge, your salesmen will have greater confidence ando consequently, greater enthusiasm.

ping. Train your staff to be alertto stop work that can wait until later and to give service when the potential buyer is there. If a man on the floor is busy setting up a display and keeps the customer waiting just a moment too long, that potential purchaser may feel neglected, turn around and walk out.

Sure, sometimes everyone is busy. You can't take care of everybody and everything at once. Under such circumstances, a reassuring word such as "we're sorry to keep you waiting. We're just swamped at the moment and will be with you in a minute" will please the person and make him feel wanted. Simple? Of course. It's downright elementary.

On the other hand, if business is slow, the person who is looking

around doesn't want to be harrassed by four difierent salesman, repeat' edly cvming up and offering assistance. It's a frne line to draw. It takes observation,

Now in carpet squares we are talking about an impulse item. The customer may be looking for a light fixture or want a gallon of paint, but, here again, a little judicious lead-in may produce a sale. If it's spring fix-up time, the good salesman can easily and cornlortably suggest carpet squares as a basic improvement that will lend a note of practical luxury, color, and sound absorption to family rooms, bedrooms, hallways or virtually any part of the house. (It's nice not to step out of bed onto a cold floor and a warm bathroom floor is pleasant, too!)

Best of all, carpet squares are so easy to put down that a housewife can do the job as well as her husband. If they wait until the weekend and work together, then it will take just half the time! Sizeable areas can he done in a matter of a few hours. It often changes a room's personality dramatically.

Another great attribute of carpet squares is that a single unit can be replaced if it becomes damaged. There is always the chance of a cigarette burn, for example. If and when this occurq the carpet tile can be taken up and a new one put down.

When it comes to displays, see that they ar'e positioned properly in main traffic areas. Carpet squares, once againo are an impulse item. The displays must be "up front," as it were, and they must be kept clean and in good condition to appeal to the eye. If they become dusty or marred or if the stock they hold is allowed to run low, you will simply turn customers away.

The same is true of literature. Keep it out where it is handy. See that it is stacked neatly and that the supply doesn't run out. Brochures collecting dust in the back room aren't selling any of the product for you.

Carpet squares are becoming increasingly popular. Th"y offer warmth, comfort and luxury at a low price. This holds tremendous appeal in a world of rising prices. All it takes is some salesmanship and that, in the words of Sherlock Holmes. is "elementary, my dear Watson!"

Firm Sells to Wide Areo

One of the West's fastest growing, young wholesale lumber companies is Wisconsin California Forest Products Inc. Peter Lane, president, reports they are serving all national markets, Canada and other export markets in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa with emphasis on sugar pine in the foreign areas.

While relativbly new, the staff is composed of seasoned veterans. Vicepresidents are Tim Mclndoo and Ed O'Kelley. Secretary-treasurer is Doveen Mayo. Dutch Wiseman is sales, and rounding out the firm's coverage is the addition to the sales staff of Ross Ensworth, whose specialty is eastern shipments of dimension and boards. Office secretary is Arleen Mitchell.

The company maintains its distribution yard in Redding, Calif. Specialties and standards include sugar pine, Ponderosa pine, Idaho white pine, Douglas fir, white fir, hemlock, spruce, incense cedarl western red cedar, quality millwork and industrial cut stock. On hand in the Redding yard are 4/4 tfuough 4/16 sugar pine, shop through selects.

Weyco Honors Sqlesmqn

James F. Hofiacker of Los Angeles has been chosen as a member of the 'Professional Roundtable of Sales (Pros) by Weyerhaeuser.

Hoffacker is one of a number of company men so honored for their outstanding ability as sales representatives during the past year.

In announcing Hoffacker's selection, Weyerhaeuser wood products' G. J. Lipani, area manager, noted that, "It is a great honor for a salesman to be named to Pros because of the high standards that have to be met."

It has been a great pleasure for me to serve as the association president during the past 13 months. This year has been difficult for many of you since unemployment rose sharply, the construction industry business slackened and the do-iLyourselfer had less money and was more selective.

During the same time environment and ecology gained the headlines. Preservationists fought to keep the forests in their natural state. Lumber prices climbed, but the industry is as stable as the giant redwood. We may show a srnaller growth ring in sorne years, but we inevitably weather the storms and the lean years and become stronger.

It has been heartening to watch the association grorir' and expand its activities during the past year, Many new programs have been developed. Old programs have been revitalized and updated. Personal contact with the membership has been of paramount importance. The large number of new members has strengthened our position. The success of the association must be directly related to the efforts of the association officers and committee chairmen for their outstanding support and many hours devoted to association activities.

My personal thank you for a task well accomplished goes to: Robert Kimble, first vp.; James Webber, second vp.; Robert Butcher, treasurer; Homer Hayward, Duane Bennett, Frank Heard and Arthur Masters, of the executive committee. Additionally, my thanks to Gordon Knott, membership; Lewis Silvera, convention; Armin Speckert, safety; Neil Keefer, marketing; Richard Cross, state legislation; Al Stockton, insurance and Robert Kimble, education. AII of these gentlemen are committee chairman and deserve the association's thanks as well as mine.

I would be remiss in my duties and personal feelings if I did not pay a very special tribute to our association exec. vp., Harry Mendenhall who joined us in June, 1970 and to Jan Brown, the exec. secretary who joined us in October, 1970. Much of the vitality and progress of the association can be attributed to their dedication and personal support of all of us.

The year ahead will be equally as difficult, however, I am certain that the incoming president and the newly elected officers and committee chairmen will continue to develop programs of great value to the membership. If the new president receives the same magnitude of support from his officers as that given to me, there can be only great success.

Link, Don Corv kum, Phil Harris, Elmer Field, Bob McPherson, Bud Beil, Jim Bender, Hal Broughton and president Ike Parker spent a full and profitable day recently at WMBA's headquarters programming a short and long range schedule of educational efforts to meet the industry's needs.

A unanimous and enthusiastic stamp of approval was placed on the Learning Resource Center. Recognized by all is the great potential of this building area that will serve as a library to house and collate all the training media available to our industry.

Those attending the Management/ Sales Conferences are receiving an outline of mbterial being gathered.

They are being urged to draw upon the LRC for management aids and training help. "Letts get going," says the committee. "Maybe we won't have everything ordered but we must get started through requests we'll know what's required and can begin to fill the need."

Through the courtesy of Lurnibermen's Underwriting Alliance, we list these important ways to discourage arson, theft and vandalism and to protect your property, your life and the lives of your employees:

(1) A 6'cyclone fence is recommended with a "Y" section on top and three to four strands of barbed wire on top of each "Y" section.

(2) Post "No Trespassing" signs on fence.

Security-a private watchman or central station recordings. Where building sits on property lines and fencing is not practical, secure all windows and doors with substantial barricades, such as steel shutters, etc. Make sure all doors and entrance gates are locked. This is to apply during all non-operating hours.

(6) On risks involving large display areas, make provisions for boarding up large plate glass windorvs at first sigrr of trouble in the area. These barticade sections should be built in advance and readily accessible to install at a moment's notice.

(?) Keep combustibles away from windows and door openings and when property is in the open at least 4' from fenee.

(8) Keep outside stock at least 6' from fence.

(9) Vegetation clearingespecially cut near fence.

Its meaning may not be fully understood by everyone but each lumberman should be knowledgeable to the point of explaining to customers and the public in his particular community what the lumber industry is doing to improve the environment in which we live.

Great quantities of extremely valid information is available through Lumber Association of Southern California and other associations; yours for the asking!

Be prepared to answer questions from those who would criticize the

lumber industry and inform those who are not critical openly but may be thinking bad thoughts. Be prepared to answer those critical of hanresting mature forests by pointing out to them that old trees consume all the oxygen they produce; whereas, vigorously growing, young trees on a sin- gle acre can supply enough oxygen, in addition to their own needs, for the needs of eighteen human beings.

Be prepared to point out that we are planting and growing better trees today, therefore th6 cutover area recovers its appearance much faster than in previous years, and the production of oxygen is much greater.

Be prepared to point out that studies today show that 93% of the log ends up in useful products for man. There are more than 5,000 wood products-many so useful that they are

A RIZONA dealers should be aware '- of the month of May as "Home Improvement fime."

At the national level this is spon- sored by National Association of Home Builders. National Home Improvement Council, National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association and National Remodelers Association.

Home remodeling accounts for 15 billion dollars in sales yearly and every dealer should tune in on the opportunity to take advantage of this national promotion.

All dealers received previous mailings which included a home improvement brochure giving them the op- portunity to order sales aids to help them promote sales during the month of May.

There are many ways the dealer can increase his sales with increased emphasis on home improvement by:

This same company will plant 85 million seedlings on a small portion of their land which is more extensive than that being done by the U. S. Forestry Service.

Lumber and building material dealers have a vital interest in environmental improvement and should know what their industry is doing, not only for their own edification but so that they can communicate this information to the communities in which they conduct their business. Maintaining an adequate source of supply will be dependent upon the condition of the forest.

Do your part to assist in maintaining and improving that condition.

(1) Conducting truck load sales.

(2) Increased advertising through newspaper and radio.

(3) Utilizing sales banners.

(4) Setting up special in-store displays.

(5) Holding sales meetings with employees to acquaint them with the overall home improvement promotion.

Many wholesalers and manufacturers are also cooperating with the program lby special emphasis on their products by inereased advertising and offering specials to dealers during the month of May.

The opportunity is there for every dealer to show a big increase in sales for May if he ties in with this nationwide promotion. We hope you do.

Realigrrment of Western timber, plywood, Iumber and hardboard production under one management group headed by up. Harry Merlo, who has been vp. for lVestern timber and lumber, has been announced by W. H. Hunt, president of Georgia-Pacific Corp. Merlo is headquartered in Port. land.

The move follows mandatory retirement at age 65 of Jens Jorgensen, vp. for Western plywood and specialties since 1964.

Heads of the three Oregon plywood and veneer operating divisions now report to Merlo.

Robert V. Hansberger, the head of Boise Cascade, has told Congress that filling national housing needs clearly requires substantial increases in the availability of softwood sawtimber.

He was one of 16 forest products industry witnesses appearing before Idaho Senator Frank Church's public lands subcommittee which is investigating federal forest management policies.

Explaining that peak activity in housing and peaks of lumber consumption o'directly correspondo" he pointed out that in the biggest housing year (1950 when 1,908,' 000 new starts were recorded) domestic sawtimber pro' duction was the highest since 1929 and total U.S. lumber consumption was 40.9 billion bf., highest since World War I.

Attainment of national housing goals of 26 million new and rehabilitated housing units by 1978, Hansberger said, averaging 2.6 million units a year-will require about "half again as much lumber and plywood'? each year.

About 10.500 acres of U.S. Forest Service land has been transferred to Arcata National in "near final settlemento' for lands and trees taken from Arcata Redwood by the federal government to create the redwood national park in California.

The Interior Dept. said the transfer should allow Arcata "to continue logging for more than l0 years." They put the value of the land and timber at $40 million. The land, tfees and cash payments equal the $57.8 million valuation Interior placed on the land Arcata lost to the park.

Arcata said it will accept the lands as "partial compensation" for the redwood tract it lost in 1968 to the park. This agreement does not settle the dispute as to how much the government will eventually have to pay. In September, Arcata filed a $t2l'6 million suit for the land.

MARY ABER]IEIIIY

Mary Abernethy, secretary-treasurer and a member of the board of the San Pedro, Forest, Imperial Valley and Calexico Lumber Companies, died March 26. She was 56.

She began her business career in 1932 as secretary to T. L. Ely, then general manager of San Pedro Lumber Co. In 1936 she began as secretary for Albert B. McKee. Jr.. for whom she worked until her death.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was educated at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Very active in Ducks Unlimited, she was honored by the group for her "significant contribution to waterfowl conservation." Her nickname, "Mary Mallard," given her by lumberman Don Philips, was good-natured recognition of her interest in Ducks Unlimited.

She is survived by her husband, C. A. Quinn, Los Angeles; and brother, Judge Ronald Abernethy, San Diego.

William "Bill" Erskine, manager of Erskine Lumber Co., Swisshome, Ore., died of a heart attack April 72, He was 52. He was one of four pa.rtners and owned controlling interest.

Survivors include his widow, Carolynda; mother, Beulah; daughters, Mrs. James Hui, Jane and Judy Erskine.
