Another tade Show?

One of the traditional remarks during trade show season is the frustration-tinged, "We just have too many shows." Exhibitors usually follow this by complaining about declining attendance, inattentive attendees, costs and time involved. Attendees also complain about cost and time factors along with drab shows, inattentive vendors, and the lack of good buys. Is everybody unhappy?

No way. Some gatherings, such as the North American Wholesale Lumber Association's Traders Market is a growing success, with last fall's Dallas show setting attendance records. Some of the buying co-ops regularly stage wellrun confabs that buyers find worthwhile.

The challenge other organizations face is how to revitalize a show that has begun to decline in attendance, enthusiasm and the revenue needed to keep the show on the road. Electronic communication, among other factors, has reduced some of the need for in-person interaction. Yet almost

everyone agrees that some face-to-face time is indispensible. There just isn't any substitute for looking someone in the face as you talk.

Resistance to change has hurt some organizations. But not the National Hardware Show and its accompanying National Building Products Expo. To keep their show fresh and vital they've trimmed the time from four days to three and added housekeeping features designed to keep exhibitors happy. Also back by popular demand is ollr Expo Preview, a pre-show color supplement in conjunction with the Expo that you'll receive along with your July issue of The Merchant Magazine.

Before World War II. trade shows used to last a week. Today time and money constraints have made shorter and less costly shows popular. Trade shows will survive and thrive because sellers meeting buyers in person involves human nature. And human nature just doesn't change.

While Universal Forest Products remained well ahead of the pack, Georgia-Pacific regained the #2 position from Great Southern Wood not by adding plants, but by cranking up production at existing facilities.

A few long-time regulars on the Top 25 fell off the

New Fasteners For Treated

In recent years, manufacturers of nails and screws have begun to introduce a

range of coated fasteners specifically intended for use with treated wood. The new metal fasteners are designed to improve fastener performance in outdoor environments where severe exposure conditions provide a challenge for fasteners in contact with treated wood products.

Wood

coatings that protect the metal portion of the fastener from direct contact with the treated wood and the high moisture conditions that can promote rust and strength reduction in unprotected fasteners.

CSI is currently working with the International Staple, Nail & Tool Association and individual manufaiturers of fasteners to evaluate the performance of the new products in comparison to already accepted hot dipped and stainless steel products.

Traditionally, the treated wood industry has recommended hot dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners for use with treated wood. However, according to CSI, the widespread mis-application of "electroplated" galvanized nails, screws and other fasteners that are only suitable for use in weather-protected applications and untreated wood, has led to poor fastener performance in more severe environments.

Market demand for improved fasteners for treated wood applications is being met with new technology specifically designed to perform in severe exposure conditions. The new fastener systems are based on

According to Dr. Kevin Archer, product development mgr. for CSI, "A number of the new fasteners perform as well as or better than the acceptable products already in use. Some of the new systems offer an improvement in the long term performance of fasteners in contact with treated wood while offering a price competitive product. The treated wood industry needs to be aware of these new technologies and ensure we are well positioned to adapt our recommendations in line with the new fastener systems being marketed."

ARIENTED strand board is the \-fhottest selling structural panel in North American residential construction. Used for wall, floor and roof sheathing, it has about 757o of the U.S. market.

lyzer t"hat scientists have recently developed. The system measures the resin distribution of OSB panels to ensure panel strength and consistency-a useful means to manage costs by calibrating resin use.

neering such research, "the most important ones deal with 'process variability' or establishing uniformity and consistency, yielding strength and durability in panel density, resin distribution and strand orientation."

A technology recently licensed from the University of California at Berkeley that is being refined uses sound waves to determine how long an OSB press must be closed to yield top adhesive strength for panels. This is done on the fly without opening the press.

How about an infrared density measurement system that can flag improper fiber distribution and density and correct imbalanced panel properties without interrupting the production process? The first such systems were sold to manufacturers in 2000.

WOOD "TREATED TO REFUSAT?"

American'Wood-Preservers'Association book of Standards Cl-99,section 2.3.G states "Treatment to refusal does not constitute an acceptable alternative to the minimum penetration or retention requirements specified under results of treatment except as specifically listed This applies toA'WPA Standard C6 and for oaks inAWpA standard C2.,'

State and local building officials are on the lookout for insufficiently treated Douglas fir lumber resulting from misinterpretations of theAVpA standards.

Vhen the job calls for treated wood, the choice is obvious.

Chemonite ACZA consistently meets building code standards for treated wood.

Chemonite ACZA is the only waterborne pressure treatment available to penetrate Douglas fir up to 2.5O# pcf to assure structural integrity and compliance withAIrPA standards.

Making homes a little cooler justbecame alot more profitable.

There's a cool product out there that is rocking the construction world. And turning up some pretty hot profits, as well. lt's TechShield'. radiant barrier sheathing.

TechShield is a combination of standard roof sheathing and a thin, but durable, layer of aluminum. The aluminum reflects up Io 970/o of the sun's rays away from the house, leaving the attic as much as 30' cooler. And that not only makes the whole home cooler, it also allows the air conditioning system to do less work all summer long.

Most new home buyers think that's pretty cool. And that means interest among contractors is heating up.

Start stocking it today, and see how much coolerand profitableroof sheathing can be.

Veteran Retailer Gloses

Rayberg Lumber & Supply, Menlo Park, Ca., in existence since 1958, closed March 30, according to father and son co-owners Paul and Jim Berchem.

Although Paul plans to retire, the younger Berchem hopes to continue selling windows and doors at a new location in either Menlo Park or Redwood City.

The original owners, Ray Gurney and Ed Sandberg, sold the business in the 1960s to Herb Grossman, who opened a second location in neighboring San Carlos. Grossman shut the latter location after an illness, and subsequently sold the current store to Paul Berchem in 1984.

In 1998, co-owner Jim Berchem began to shift the inventory away from lumber to finished goods such as doors and windows.

The site reportedly will be developed into a complex of 16 townhomes and a 27,000-sq. ft. office building.

CSI& Osmose To Jointly Market AGQ

Chemical Specialties, Inc., Charlotte, N.C., and Osmose, Inc., Griffin, Ga., have agreed to work together to expand the availability of CSI's Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), an arsenic- and chromium-free preservative that protects wood against rot, decay and termites.

The deal comes when consumer and specifier demand is growing for an alternative to traditional treated wood products.

Osmose now can manufacture and sell ACQ worldwide under CSI's

Tap The Noise Control Market

Sales of soundproofing insulation would go through the roof just by homebuilders making the upgrades available to home buyers, according to a new study by Johns Manville.

One-third of recent home buyers said they would have made different decisions about sound control if they had been given more information.

"Osmose acquired the rights for ACQ in Australia and New Zealand through its recent acquisition of Fernz Timber Protection Group," said Paul Goydan, Osmose's executive vice president. "This agreement and the Fernz acquisition allows us to globally market this proven alternative technology."

Osmose's licensed treaters are now considering whether to add ACQ to their line-up of treatments. Osmose says currently only a small fraction of the plants offer similar "niche" products.

through walls, ceilings, floors, from noisy appliances, water pipes or the like. Yet, 507o of consumers claimed never to have thought about sound control before.

"Our research demonstrates the residential consumer market for sound control is untapped, and builders could create consumer interest and demand by simply offering sound control upgrades," said JM research engineer Larry Gelin. Among lTVo of consumers who were offered sound control upgrades, 70% bought them.

Dealers Go Online To Comply

Members of the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association, buying group Builder Marts of America, and online B2B marketplace EqualFooting.com now have online access to regulatory compliance services.

Virtual Compliance links to OSHA and HazMat standards, Material Safety Data Sheets, and a Digital Expert for managing their compliance.

Retailers can now, according to Virtual Compliance ceo David C. Frankil, "tell us what they are doing, and we will tell them what they have to do to comply, and give them the opportunity to buy the services. supplies, and training they need to do it right. The fact that we can turn a twohour, or two-day process, into 20 clicks of a mouse is a quantum leap in efficiency and effectiveness."

NLBMDA is using an OSHA grant

to train its 8,000 members to use the service. The first training session was set for March 9 in Dallas, Tx.

Builder Marts of America is promoting the service to its customer base of 4,500 dealers via marketing and financial, equipment and incentive programs.

PR Campaign In High Gear

The industry's "Be Constructive" campaign gets into full swing late this month with the introduction of television and print ads touting North America's abundant forest resource.

Organized by the Wood Promotion Network, the $45 million public relations campaign in its first month generated at least 44 TV, 30 radio/internet and 20 print stories (including the Wall Street Journal), translating into over 25 million media impressions (see March, p.23).

WPN also is preparing to launch forestinformation.com and several PR events.

And, the group sponsors a monthly contest soliciting imaginative and humorous ways to Be Constructive at work, home or play. The best idea wins a "Be Constructive" shirt.

Tleating industry targeted by pressr lawyers

A RASH of newspaper articles questioning the safety of ^CLCCA pressure treated wood has the wood preserving industry up in arms.

On March ll, the St. Petersburg Times launched a series of articles, titled "The Poison in Your Back Yard." The newspaper claimed that, according to studies they funded, "pressure treated wood used to build local playgrounds, decks and picnic tables is leaking arsenic at levels far higher than the state considers safe." The articles also cited a handful of residents in different states who claimed to have been harmed by CCA.

Immediately, cities began chaining off local playgrounds and some hysterical residents called for wood structures to be demolished. Newspapers across the country began running similar articles.

The American Wood Preservers Institute quickly defended CCA's 60-year history of safe use with a public statement and a newspaper editorial by toxicologist Dr. Christopher Teaf, who recently completed three studies on health considerations of CCA treated wood.

"It would take far more arsenic in soil than what I have seen in scientific reports or the press before any threat of health effects to children might occur," Dr. Teaf wrote. "As a husband and a father of two young sons, with a playset in the backyard, I plan no changes. The product has been used safely for generations, and I have seen no reason why it shouldn't continue to be properly used in the future."

The articles coincided with the filing of a lawsuit in federal court in Miami that accuses the pressure treating industry of deceiving consumers about the dangers of their products.

The suit calls treated wood "defective and unsafe" and accuses treated wood producers and resellers of concocting a campaign of "misrepresentation, omission and halftruths" to cover up its harmful effects.

The lawyers, who reportedly have been involved in tobacco litigation, are seeking to have it certified as a class-action case. So far, their one plaintiffis Jerry Jacobs, a Dade County resident who owns a deck made of CCA treated wood.

The defendants include chemical suppliers Osmose and Arch Chemicals, leading retailers Home Depot and Lowe's, and treaters Hoover Treated Wood Products, Thomson, Ga.; Robbins Manufacturing Co., Tampa, Fl.; Wood Treaters Inc., Jacksonville, Fl.; Roy O. Martin Lumber Co., Alexandia, La., and Follen Wood Preserving Co., Jackson, Ms., and suggests others will be added later.

The list appears random considering, for example, the omission of rival chemical producer CSI and the inclusion of Roy O. Martin, which has only been using CCA for a few months.

The suit claims that all parties are responsible for any

environmental or health problems because, among other things, the industry is not properly distributing warning sheets to consumers despite promises it made to federal regulators 15 years ago.

The EPA is currently reviewing CCA and considering whether to make the Consumer Information Sheets mandatory.

The suit wants the defendants to pay for removal of decks, playground sets and other structures built with CCA treated wood, clean up contaminated soils, and pay for medical monitoring and testing for people who may be at risk. The plaintiff also seeks punitive damages.

The defendants could not comment on specifics of the case, since by press time none had yet been served.

Arch Chemicals did find the suit "troubling," said spokesman Huck DeVenzio. "Certainly we are concerned, but we stand by the record and science behind CCA, and we have never shirked from independent testine of our products."

NW Indie To Duel With Depot

Jerry's Home Improvement Center, Eugene, Or., plans to build a 135,000sq. ft. store in nearby Springfield, despite word that Home Depot wants to build its second area store less than a mile away.

Dennis Orem, Jerry's president, said he and his father, Dennis Orem, the company founder, have wanted to build a store in Springfield for 20 years. However, their first priority was expanding the Eugene location, which, when completed in 1996, doubled the size ofthe store to 160,000 sq. ft.

"If we hadn't expanded the existing store, we would have been in Springfield five years ago," he said, noting that opening in Springfield makes sense, as l5%o of his business comes from people who live there.

While building structure supportrelated soil tests are being conducted on the 10.S-acre plot of what would be Jerry's second location, Depot is reportedly pursuing a planning change, as their proposed site is zoned for light industrial use.

Orem hopes to begin construction this summer, once the site has passed its soil test. The store could be built in

six to nine months. he said.

If problems arise for either Jerry's or Home Depot during the permit process, either could drop plans to build, although according to Sam Aguirre, manager of the Eugene, Or., Home Depot, the chain will not be deterred from building in Springfield. "We are absolutely going through with that," he said ofthe proposed store.

Treated Wood Site For Users

What kind of fasteners should you use with preserved wood? When can you paint it, and what sort of paint should you buy? How do you dispose of your scraps? Can you recycle the wood? What does the latest research say about the safety of wood that's been treated with CCA, creosote or pentachlorophenol?

Answers to those questions and many more can now be found at www.preservedwood.com, the new Web site of the American Wood Preservers Institute.

Designed to be the authoritative source of information for users of pressure treated wood, the site features Q's & A's on all aspects of preserved wood and an extensive comoilation of

research into the health, safety and environmental features of the various types of treated wood.

"Our Web site www.awpi.org had been doing double duty," said Mel Pine, AWPI's manager of communications. "It contained information for members and prospective members of AWPI as well as for users and specifiers of our products. The new site, www.preservedwood.com, is specifically for users, specifiers and others who want to learn more about preserved wood."

AWPI Fights Water Standard

The American Wood Preservers Institute has filed a legal challenge in federal court to overturn the Environmental Protection Agency's new arsenic regulation, one of the last acts of the departing Clinton Administration.

The rule was published in the Federal Register January 22, despite

congressional action urging EPA to develop more appropriate science to address any risks associated with arsenic.

The EPA's regulation would reduce by 8O7o the level of arsenic permitted in drinking water, even though the new standard is well below levels that often occur naturally in water supplies. A Senate bill was filed to overturn the regulation.

According to AWPI president Scott Ramminger. the association was forced to take legal action because the drinking water standard is a benchmark applied informally and by regulation to many other exposures. In addition to its impact on municipalities and water utilities, the regulation indirectly affects virtually all industries that use or process arsenic-containing materials, including many wood treaters.

"The EPA acknowledges that it based its work on highly criticized, 30-year-old epidemiological studies from Taiwan that it analyzed using a ,60-year-old linear extrapolation I method-a method that does not recognize any of the recent, accepted advances in biology and risk assessment," Ramminger said.

Talpx Partners With csXnet

Talpx Inc. and csXnet have formed a strategic partnership to expand ecommerce within the building products industry.

The initial focus of the alliance will be to integrate Talpx's lumber and panel exchange into the csXnet suite of services. An electronic marketplace that extends to the construction and building materials industry, csXnet is jointly owned by ChanneLinx and the Construction Industry Exchange, comprised of 19 of the 21 federated dealer associations.

Members of csXnet that join Talpx will have access to reportedly the single largest online inventory of North American lumber and panel products, with over 200 mills representing nearly 407o of the lumber production in North America. Talpx buying members that join csXnet will be able to process transactions electronically using Channelinx's Trading Management Solution.

"With transaction volume growing so rapidly," noted Talpx president Jim Olmedo, "our members are asking for a technology solution to integrate into their existing systems. The csXnet alliance soeeds that effort."

thetic Coating Bolsters Treated Wood

Wood preservers tired of losing marketshare to composite manufacturers can now add a polymer coating to their treated lumber to produce a sturdier, lower maintenance wood decking.

After four years of product development and testing, Northstar Vinyl Products, LLC, Kennesaw, Ga., has just introduced Morex, a decking that's wood on the inside and synthetic on the outside.

"With Morex, the customer gets the best of both worlds," claims Northstar president Jeff Moreau. "He

gets the strength of wood and all the benefits of a synthetic."

The new decking begins with the selection of premium grade pressure treated wood deck material. Then, using a proprietary, high-speed

process, a polymer coating is applied to the top three sides of the board. A three-component, skid-resistant aggregate is applied to the walking surface.

Its wood core reportedly reduces the board's overall weight while increasing its strength, eliminates predrilling, and is nailed down, not screwed, so nail heads "seat" into the coating to form a watertight seal. Builders, architects, designers and code officials typically are more familiar with wood.

The coating is said to protect the wood against sun and rain, reduce maintenance, allow cleaning with water and a degreaser, carry a l0-year limited warranty, eliminate splinters, and seal out moisture to prevent cupping and checking.

"The composite deck products are great because they took maintenance outof the equation," Moreau explains. "That's what has built their market. However, those products, as ( Please turn tu page 4 I )

Synthetic Coated Treated Wood

(Continued from page 38) they're currently manufactured, cannot satisfactorily address a builder's structural strength requirements."

The 5/4" and 2" boards initially will be offered in three colors-light tan, dark tan and redwood-in a residential as well as a commercial grade for marinas and other hightraffic applications.

"This product gets the CCA industry and the wood treater off of the sideline and back into the same." savs Moreau. "This industry has watched the wood'alternativls take a bite out of its biggest segment of business. Now a treater can add value to his own product and compete with synthetic options." According to Northstar's run rate, one coating machine produces the same amount of decking in the same time as 22 composite extruders.

The company is seeking regional distributors to promote Morex, as well as wood treating facilities around the U.S. to apply the coatings in-house. Treaters can be licensed whether they're affiliated with Osmose, Arch or CSI, as long as the application does not void the chemical supplier' s original warranty.

Building Products Plus, Houston, Tx., was the first to sign on with Morex. The treater has been licensing 2|POLY, a coating very similar to Morex, but developed specifically for marine structures.

Morex is only available for treated wood-for now. "With CCA having the lion's share of the wood deck market, we developed a CCA product first," reveals Moreau. "We have run tests on both CCA and brieht lumber and it works with either. We were thinking u6out trying it on cedar and expect that it would work fine."

Depot Sprucing Up Stores

After more than 20 years as a "working warehouse" complete with wooden pallets in its aisles and beeping forklifts zigzagging the floors, Home Depot stores are getting a makeover, all under the watchful eyes of shoppers and Wall Street.

Mindful of injuries from fallen merchandise and customer complaints about cluttered aisles and uneven service, the chain launched its Service Performance Improvement program

last year in six stores in Salt Lake City, Ut., and Florida.

The program, which has since been expanded to an additional 42 stores in the Atlanta region, prohibits workers from stocking shelves and running forklifts between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., the busiest shopping hours. The rules also apply to the roughly 100 stores that operate 24 hours, although some smaller sales volume units can inventory until 10 a.m., and forklifts can still be used to fulfill customer needs.

To replenish the shelves, the chain has rearranged schedules and the duties of existing employees so they work early morning or off-hours at night rather than adding new personnel. In addition, all truck deliveries are now conducted during off-hours rather than during daytime.

Such changes comply with new ceo Bob Nardelli's plans to garner more sales from existing stores and rely less on expansion for future sales growth. The changes can also be viewed as an indication that store managers' independence is dwindling in favor of consistency, according to executive v.p.operations Larry Mercer. "There were no rules before," he says, noting that initial SPI results from the first six test stores indicate increases in same store sales and average customer amount.

Such results would be sweet music to Wall Street, which is hoping the makeover helps to resume DePot's recently broken growth streak.

The retailer also has assigned 130 safety managers to monitor store operations, has created a safety-officer post and begun securing all top-shelf merchandise to a pallet with plastic wrap to keep it from falling.

Sides Drawn As Softwood Pact Ends

A volatile issue that aroused varying degrees of passion, the U.S.-Canadian Softwood Lumber Agreement was set to expire March 31, concluding a five-year pact that limited Canada's duty-free softwood lumber exports to the U.S. to 14.7 billion bd. ft. annually.

As the expiration approached the eleventh hour, many believed the already-tense situation could become even more acrimonious, perhaps resulting in a full-scale trade war between the two countries. The current economic slowdown has strengthened the resolve of both countries to hold their ground.

The 1996 pact, covering Canada's four major lumberproducing provinces, designated that fees be charged once a quota was reached. Since then, both nations have claimed the deal hurt their industries. Some U.S. producers, such as Rusty Wood, owner of two Georgia mills, view the accord expiration as being harmful to the U.S. lumber industry, due to a potential influx of inexpensive Canadian lumber.

Wood, chairman of the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, said times are tough enough for the industry, noting that lumber prices are down and U.S. workers are losing jobs. "I'm just a guy wanting to survive,"' he said, adding that he has 300 families relying on him to stay in business. "(The Coalition's) mantra is if they would just sell their timber competitively, we go away," he said.

The Coalition prefers a new agreement that would tax all Canadian softwood lumber based on its value. The group threatened to pursue a 407o countervailing duty and file anti-dumping charges with the U.S. Commerce Department if Canada refused to agree to new restraints. The producers seem to have the ear of a large number of U.S. Senators, who fear devastating effects domestically from unchecked lumber trade.

Canadian producers are calling for free trade and removal of the 14.7 billion bd. ft. cap and rhe rariffs. They are supported by U.S. home builders and lumber dealers, who claim the 1996 agreement has added $1,000 to the price of a new home.

"We understand that demand is down, prices are down and that mills are facing a very tough time," said former Ontario Premier Robert Rae. "But, no amount of rhetoric is going to make the United States self-sufficient in lumber."

At press time, Canadian Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick were meeting to discuss the matter, but had yet to indicate any progress. This was on the heels of a letter siened bv 5l U.S. senators which urged President Bush to-negotiate a new agreement.

Pettigrew did admit, however, to have been asked by the British Colombia forest industry to consider a U.S. suggestion for a Canadian tax on lumber.

The feud can be traced back to structural differences between the two countries' forest products industries. While a majority of the commercial timberland in the U.S. is privately owned, more than 90Vo of Canada's forests are publicly owned; companies harvest the lands under longterm provincial licenses.

Many U.S. producers claim the provinces' logging fees are priced well below fair market rates to pressure the mills that are granted licenses to maximize employment by continuing to run even during poor markets. Twice before in the early 1980s and 1990s, say Canadian officials, litigation resulted in rulings disproving illegal subsidies; U.S. producers obviously disagree.

Bad Servics = Bad Business

Over 207o of customers leave a business without buying anything and an equal number stop shopping in the store all together when they encounter bad customer service, according to a Mohr Learning survey.

In addition, 26Vo rclate their experience to friends and urge them to boy-

cott the store. "While the most common response to poor service is to complain to the store manager, many people seem to protest with their pocketbook instead," said Mohr ceo Michael Patrick. "Retailers need to recognize the less visible impact of bad service. which is the quiet erosion of their customer base."

The Boston-based firm reports that, when confronted with bad customer service, 39.3Vo of respondents complain to a store manager; 25.17o tell their friends and urge them not to frequent the store;22.27o stop shopping at the store; 22.OVo leave without making a purchase: 15.37o just ignore the transgression, and 12.77o get mad, but continue to shop at the store anyway.

Patrick says that although some retailers take their customers for granted and assume most could care less about service, the research reveals otherwise.

"People really get upset, even if they're reluctant to say anything," he asserts. "In fact, some customers who never complain to a store manager will do so to their friends. And wordof-mouth can be as powerful in retailing as it is in the motion picture business."

He said that retailers must assume that for every complaining customer, two others experienced similar frustrations, but didn't report them.

"It's not enough for store managers simply to address individual customer complaints," he notes. "The better solution is to provide training and supervision to employees so that such incidents are not repeated."

Among the other survey findings was that while men are more likelY than women to leave without buYing anything (267o vs. l97o), women are more apt to voice their complaints to a manager. Also, customers between the ages of 45-54 are least likely to ignore bad service (9Vo), while those aged 55 years and older are most likely (l8%o).

Big W-Willamette's Word War

As Weyerhaeuser Co.'s hostile takeover attempt of Willamette Industries, Portland, Or., enters its fifth month, a war of words continues to rage between the two rivals.

Most recently, Willamette appealed to shareholders to reject three Weyerhaeuser-backed candidates to the board, claiming the trio were not independent enough.

Big W countered by asserting that many Willamette shareholders favorably view the proposed hostile takeover bid of $5.4 billion, or $48 a share.

Willamette ceo Duane McDougall scoffed at the news, insisting the allcash offer is too low. "We've been perfectly clear that $48 per share is totally inadequate," he said. "We can bring more value to shareholders remaining independent. "

Although he would not name a price, McDougall did say the firm is worth "a lot more" than $48 per share. "We have said over and over in the past that we're not for sale," he said, "but at the same time the board knows it has a fiduciary responsibility to listen to serious offers."

The election of new officers will be held during Willamette's annual shareholder meetins June l.

Composites For LVL, Lineals

Two western manufacturers are using Dow Plastics' thermoplastics composite technology to produce stronger engineered wood and trim products.

Pacific Woodtech Corp., Burlington, Wa., a subsidiary of ltochu Corp. of Japan, is combining its production method with selective reinforcement

Weyerhaeuser, Federal Way, Wa., views the event as an opportunity for shareholders to debate their offer.

"Finally, the Willamette shareholders will have the opportunity to show their strong support for our proposed transaction in a manner that cannot be ignored by the Willamette board," said Steven Rogel, Weyerhaeuser chairman, ceo and president.

using Dow's Fulcrum Technology to produce enhanced LVL.

Although the joint development will focus on industrial applications such as scaffold planks. opportunities may also exist in residential construction for beams and headers.

Milgard Windows, reportedly the largest manufacturer of windows in the western U.S., has licensed Fulcrum Technology to develop high performance thermoplastic composite window and door lineals.

The added strength, toughness and corrosion resistance reportedly will help eliminate structural deterioration. Milgard says the thermoplastic material exhibits the same level of expansion and contraction as glass, reducing unnecessary stress on installed windows and doors.

The recyclability and aesthetics of thermoplastic composties are added benefits. "Fulcrum Technology offers the advantage of recycling scrap created during the manufacture, design and construction of window and door lineals," explains Marc Gagnon, applications development manager for Fulcrum Technology. "In addition, the adhesion of thermoplastic composites produced using this technology to other thermoplastics may provide a number of very promising aesthetic coating possibilities."

Smarter Pricing Seen As Key

Smarter pricing based on a thorough analysis of customer needs and buying patterns increases profits, according to a new book on pricing for wholesaler-distributors.

"Pricing, it seems, is done at the last minute to consummate the sale," write Scott Benfield and Jane Baynard in Capturing Value: Pricing Management for Distributors. The pair urge owners to avoid running their business strictly by orchestrating countermoves against the competition. Instead, implement corporate-level, pricingmanagement focusing on the various customer types served and their individual product and service needs.

"Regardless of industry, most products and their prices are not unique to any one wholesaler," says Benfield. "The customer knows this and behaves accordingly: by putting his business up for auction every day."

r0 sh T rn oot themselves the order pad ways salespeople

IX/HY DO the overwhelming V Y majority of salespeople fail to achieve greatness?

II There is a lack of sales leadership. If the sales manager doesn't score a 10, don't expect the salespeople to become 10s. It's not the sales manager's fault. He may have been a great salesperson and then got promoted without receiving sales management education. He doesn't know what he doesn't know yet.

a

4 There is a lack of desire, by the salesperson, to excel at the profession. They go at it to be average or even to be pretty good. That's okay, I guess, if you want average to pretty good sales results. Recruit more people that only have two basic needs: money and oxygen.

a J ttrev have insufficient sales and business skills. They receive adequate product training, but they haven't received the kind of training and education great salespeople receive. When you invest in them, you become entitled to raise expectations. And remember that motivational speeches don't work. There is an abundance of un-learnins to do in most cases.

t Planning for the year may be tough for those who have never done it, but it works for the winners. Most say they don't plan because they don't have time. Plan the year and then break it down into quarters and months. Which clients are you going to land in each quarter? How much revenue from each by month? How are you going to do it? Most people can't answer these questions. If a bunch of salespeople

part one -

can't answer them, you have massive drift.

F

D Most people squander time. Don't do it. Treat it like gold because it is your major currency. Invest most of it with major clients you want to land and with those you never want to lose. Not with small clients just because you like being with them. Comfort zones are killers.

a

D A very high percentage of salespeople talk too much. They forget that most people only have a threesentence attention span. They forget that clients have pretty much heard all that "products, great service" blahblah before. They don't understand that great selling consists of doing very little talking. It's far better to ask great questions and be a great listener and note taker.

,I Audiences answer "yes" to these three questions: "Do you find most business telephone calls boring?' "Do

you find most business letters boring?" "Do you find most salespeople to be boring?"

Solution: be anything except boring. If you think boring is okay, I suggest you go into the oil drilling business. There, boring is good. Excitement, on the other hand, gets others excited, too. I even saw an accountant get excited recently. It proved that anything is possible!

0 Most salespeople only have one personality style; how they sell reflects how they personally like to be sold. Not good. There are four distinct personality styles and smart people adjust their style to fit better the clients' style. Most fail to study clients like a book.

Ln"." are many "cookie cutter" salespeople that call on people to sell them something. They don't focus on personal, value-added services and joy. Try to find special things to do for clients so that they will want to buy from you and need you.

tnI U A majority put in a good days work, and it is usually 8:00 to 5:00 or thereabouts. Great salespeople understand what Kemmons Wilson, founder of Holiday Inns, meant when he said, "To be successful, you only have to work half of a day;just figure out which half you are going to work-the first half or the second half." Every day? No, just when you should, do.

Next month: l0 more shortcomings of salespeople.

U.S. Lumber Demand May Rebound

While the weakening economy should cause Western sawmills to see lower activity in the first half of the year, the Western Wood Products Association says lumber demand could improve somewhat during the second half of 2001.

The group forecasts U.S. lumber demand to be 51.7 billion bd. ft. in 2001, a 3.97o dip from the previous year and the lowest level since 1997. Despite this, 2001 would be the fourth-highest lumber consumption year on record.

The decline is due to a decrease in housing construction, the association

says, citing figures that suggest new home starts would drop over 5Vo to 1.5 million units this year. This indicates an expected 5.7Vo decline in residential lumber construction use, to 19.8 billion bd. ft.

Lower housing activity should reduce Western lumber production by 6.37o to 16 billion bd. ft., with overall U.S. production decreasing 4.87o to 34.1 billion bd. ft.

The slower demand should bring an end to the three-year run of increased Canadian lumber imports, which the WWPA forecasts to decline to l8 billion bd. ft., the lowest total in four

years. European, Latin American and New Zealand imports, however, are expected to rise modestly.

Masonite Shelves Siding

Masonite Corp. announced plans to phase out production of all hardboard siding products by mid-June, necessitating the shutdown of two siding production lines in Laurel, Ms., and closure of the Ukiah. Ca.. mill.

The company will phase out production of all siding products including Colorlok, Woodsman, Lap & Panel, SuperSide and HiddenRidge siding, and Modulax industrial board.

The mills expect to operate the affected production lines until May or June to fulfill outstanding orders.

International Paper will continue to make these products available to qualified claimants for repair and replacement purposes.

Logging Protests Staged

Recent demonstrations against the selling of wood from the Great Bear Rainforest were held to protest the logging practices of International Forest Products, Vancouver, B.C.

The incidents were staged by environmental activists at Oregon Pacific Building Products, Wilsonville, Or., and by Nuxalk Nation Chief Qwatsinas at Lumbermen's Building Center. Clackamas. Or.

At Orepac, employees arriving for work were met by about 35 protesters, some bearing pickets that read "Don't Buy Interfor," others waving anti-logging banners. A 40' inflatable grizzly bear also was unveiled, according to Doug Hart, Orepac's vice president of sales and marketing, who said that work was not disrupted.

Three activists, however, chained themselves to a 30' stack of Interforsupplied wood, while another spraypainted "Forest Crimes" on the wood's plastic sheathing. Hart said police helped remove the activists, arresting three in the process for trespassing. He added, "We're very environmentally conscious. We don't pick our suppliers carte blanche."

The demonstration led by Chief Qwatsinas at Lumbermen's, which included activists from local colleges, was said to have temporarily disrupted business at the store. "Lumbermen's is selling my homeland," said the Chief. "Last year Lumbermen's promised to stop selling wood from endangered forests and today we are demanding they keep that promise."

To say that Boise Cascade BMDD (}utside Sales Representatives Bob Gengler and Brook Hatfield will go the extra mile for a customer is a bit of an understatement. Take the time when their customer sold BCI@ Joists to a contractor who had never used engineered wood before. Bob and Brook could sense his hesitation, so they offered to drive out to his job site and help him frame the floor. Even though it meant each of them driving over 600 miles round trip.

1,100 feet of BCI's later, the contractor had a new floor. And Bob and Brook had one very happy customer. At Boise Cascade EWP, and at each one of our nationwide network of distributors, we know that keeping your customers happy is the most important part of your job. And we'll do whatever it takes to make it easier, even if it means driving clear across the country for a project.
