its annual San Francisco spring meeting, the registered attendance of 421 was off only lOVo from last year. But the former mobs that used to jam the Westin St. Francis Hotel lobby were conspicuous by their absence. Where formerly hundreds gathered in a feeding frenzy of networking, only a handful stood by the famous clock to meet their peers.
The consensus on attendance was thatNAWLAsTraders Market, now in its fourth year, had replaced the WWPA spring meeting as the primary lumber industry meeting point.
A series of issues forums during the February 2l-Much 2 meeting were headed by prominent industry figures and often drew nearly 150 persons.
Dick Davidson, chairman and ceo of the Union Pacific, acknowledged the rail line's problems. "You had an absolute right to be angry," he admit-

Elected chairman of the board of WWPA was Marc A. Brinkmeyer, president of Riley Creek Lumber Co., Laclede, Id. James M. English of Idaho Forest Industries, Coeur d'Alene, Id., was named first vice chairman. and Ronald C. Parker, Willamina Lumber Co., Portland, Or., second vice chairman.
Following the recent resignation of Walter Wirfs as president of the lumber manufacturer's association, staffer Tom Hanneman was named interim president. A search committee expects to present a new candidate for president by mid-year.
WWPA s first annual meeting in the next millennium will be March 4-7, 2000 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.
