The deal with steel
Light gauge steel framing has occasionally been both a real and imaginary threat to the supremacy of the faditional wmd snrd. But today, steel's threat to wood looks more real than at any time duing the lasthalf century.
While steel studs are used in only 2Vo of all homes built in the U.S., steel associations predict rising lumber prices and availability problems will enable steel to capture 25Vo of the new home market within five years.
Lumber producers don't buy this scenario. They counter that if steel reached even a llVo share, the pressure on lumber would be off and wood prices would decline. Steel, according to the lumbennen, would lose its price advantage and its attraction for home builders.
Othen aren't so sure. At the National Association of Home Builders show earlier this year, a steel frarned home was built to demonsEate new technologies and systems. Builder interest was intense. Calls seeking inforrration about steel ran 3040 per day on a NAHB hotline for builders.
But the conversion from wood to steel isn't
simple. Product prejudices and lifeJong work patterns are not quickly or easily changed. Problems and pitfalls arc present for any builder making the change. Framers must be retrained. Inventory handling is not identical to that of wood. Actual assembly and other real life Murphy's Law problems can be quick to surface. To make the sale of steel snrds profitable, retailers must be sure steel suppliers will provide essential faining and technical support.
With lumber prices a driving force behind any retreat from wood studs, converts had best remember that lumber price trends are notoriously difficult (read impossible) to predict. If price is the sole reason to change, good sense indicates adding a large measure of caution to the mix.
Steel studs have some features and benefits wood studs do not. Their producers also claim environmental advantages. While these claims do not stand up to close examination, that doesn't mean the public won't believe them.
This time it doesn't look as if steel studs will conveniently go away as they have in the past
Will it last? ls it safe? ls it always available? You can't be sure with some pressure treated woods. So Louisiana-Pacific uses Wolman" CCA, the best-known wood preservative in the trusiness. Withover 60 years of proven safety and effectiveness, customers request Wolman three times more often than any othertreated wood. And because availability is important,

Excelling. Leading. Going beyond the usualto achieve excellencel Leadership is not easy. It requires tough determination, diligence and single-mindedness of purpose no marter what detractors may say. It relies on hindsight, insight, foresight, and a sixth sense of what is right. It comes from experience firmly seated in a willingness to leam, a curiosity to explore and an anticipation of what can be. It's more than working hard... it's working smart. Leadership is all these things wrapped in a commit. ment to accept nothing but the very best effort that can be made.

Wtto 15 treating plants located across the country from the Rockies to New England, Universal Forest Products, Inc., produced nearly a halt-billion board feet of CCA pressure treated lumber in 1993. And that impressive total is almost certain to be eclipsed this year as five of the plants have been operated by Universal only since October.
The majority of the company's facilities are in the more heavily populated Northeastern U.S., but its westem divisions play an important role both in its past history and growing future. Established in 1955 in Michigan as a wholesale supplier of lumber and components to the mobile home industry, Universal built strategically-located manufacturing and distribution yards and became the world's largest builder of engineered roof trusses for manufactured housing (a position it still holds).
When the growth of that industry slowed in the late 1970s, the fimt ent€red the wood treating business in Florida in 1978. Although there were then 36 Eeaters within a l5-mile radius, the facility nrmed a profit in its first month of operation.
Universal's Southwest Company installed its first reating plant in Windsor, Co., in 1985, a facility rccently enlarged due to increasing &nand- By 1989, having become p€rhaps the nation's largest volume producer of CCA-preserved lumber, Universal purchased land and equipment for construction of a Saginaw, Tx., plant between Dallas and Fort Worth. A Kansas City, Mo, area plant serving Southwest Company territory is scheduled to go on line this fall.
As to the future, with growing uncertainty about redwood and western red cedar supplies, the company foresees expanding acceptance of reated lumber by Pacific Coast consumers. So a Universal Far West Company reating plant somewhere in the Northwest is a definite possibitity. The most obvious site would be on three available acres adjrcent to Universal's Woodburn, Or., remanufacturing facility.

Universal tatgeted the d-i-y market in the late 1980s, entering with its CCA treated products - lattice, fencing, De-ck Necessities and other value-added specialties. tn five years, Universal's share of consumer-related products rose from SVo ta 5l4o of its sales.
Universal treated 4d[ million board feet of lumber last year, 90% of which was southern pine with the remainder ponderosa pine, herr/fir, etc. The capability of adding its LifeGuard water repellent to lumber' generally to decking, was introduced a couple of yers ago.
One advantage for Universal in terms of iB ability to grow with d-i-y retailers is that it combines value-added manufacturing (ripping/trimming/painting/assembly) with CCA treating, comprehensive marketing assistance and nationwide distribution. That means every piece of Eeated commodity lumber is grade-stamped and endtagged to ensure proper CCA penetration and retention. Tnat treated fencing products are made with jigs and automatic nailing equipment. And treated Deck Necessities are produced in grades consumers want and notjust to strndard rules.

mainain their level of technological proficiency, WWPC personnel regulady attend Osmose seminars and worksbops.
\Mo*- Wood Preserving Co.'s facility in Sumner, Wa., encompasses 12 acres of treating, drying and storage area. But over the years perhaps their greatest asset has been their foresight.
Western Wood Preserving Co. came into being in 1971 when the Reimer family purchased the existing oil-borne fieating facility which was only tbree acres in size. The company saw the future in CCA treated products and in 1983 became one of the first Osmose licensees on the West Coast. Business has srown 8l}Vo erch yer for the last l0 years, graduaff'V turning WWPC into a highly competitive full service CCA products manufacturer.
Struggling in the early years, WWPC has become a major competitor in its 23-year history. Today they cottinue to keep ahead of the challenges of the feating industry by investing in the future. They have worked continually with environmental consultants and the experts at Osmose to be a leader in environmental safety and compliance. For exanple, WWPC saw the future in 1980 and was one of the first plants on the West Coast o install a covercd drip pad.
The company is constantly malcing contributions to the feating indusries by taking leadership roles in associations such as AWPI, WWPI and AWPA. To
While supply has not been a problem for them, vice president Mike Reimer anticipates it could become one "potentially long teml, 2-3 years down the road." The answer, he says, may be southern yellow pine. "It"s corring. We're already feating some southern pine specialty products, though no real commodities."

The company cunently has two cytnders (6'x90' and 6'x145') to CCA treat hem-fir boards, dimension lumbet timbers and plywood and offers a full-line inventory of sawn stock, TSO and dry kiln seryices.
And WWPC continues to look ahead. A massive expansion project - including new tank farm, building and process equipnent upgrade - will be completed in May, aimed at drastically increasing efficiency, capacity and safety. "It's the environmentally corect thing to do and it will last for the next 2Ol years," says Reimer.
The Osmose-designed system not only uses the latest technology available to produce higher quality products but will increase plant capacity by 30 to 40Vo. The cnmputer-based process control system will provide the utmost in neating flexibility and quality control.
WWPC prides itself on the integrity of is staff, has never missed a vendor discount and has established a reputable position in the industry. Noting a more competitive marketplace than ever before, Reimer says, "The last 23 years we've seen lots of change, and we ae ready to take on the challenges of the future."

high percentage of fasteners in the blind item category, margins can often exceed 807o.
Retailers who are successful with fasteners and connectors work to create a stfong product niche. They 'stock enough SKUs to fill any need without having to special order and make the section a dominant feature. Broad selections have been found 0o attfact more customers than low pricas.
Retailers are successful following completely different strategies of department placement. sone place an impressive fastener display at the front of the store, making sure it is one of the fint deparunents seen by the custoner. Others locate an equally prominent display at the back with the idea that it draws customers through the store, exposing them to other merchandise. Whether the display is up front u in baclq it must be
powerful. Developing a strong product niche also demands fasteners and connectrors be cross merchandised in the lumber and power tool depaftments ils well as near the contractor service desk.
Fasteners and connectors are labor intensive. Constant inventory maintenance is required for a consistent instock positidl. A store employee or a factory rep must be responsible for checking inventory and maintaining stock on an established schedule. Good housekeeping is second only to being in-stock. Fasteners and connectors are easily mixed up and need cons0ant care so customers can find the items they need.
Bin labels and price stickers must be accurate. Displaying in-use sketches or photos with use insfructions can bolster a customer's confidence in making his selection. Some manufacturers including Kant-Sag and Simpson Srong Tie provide displays showing how their products are used. Teco/Lumberlok has posters with line drawings of projects and explanations of hardware needed for them.
Customers like the choice of buying individual or packaged fasteners and connectors. Bulk fasteners sell best to customers requiring only a few. Packaged fasteners, which often have a price brealc, appeal to those who need large numbers of fasteners and don't mind buying a few extra.
Most retailers feel that all but the most experienced customers need help in making their selections. One or mce of the sales staff should be an expert on fasteners and connectors. Store.s that have deck clinics or similar project seminrs find that spending some time talking about the corect fasteners and connectors improves hardware sales. Other stores report

good results including fasteners in project kits. Teco is marketing several kits with project plans, lumber lists and fasteners or connectors.
Cus0omers favor sCainless steel fasteners and connectors, relating them to rust-froe service and high quality. Some retailers have been able to eliminate lightweight, inexpensive fasteners and connectors, finding customers are willing to spend more for higher quality.
A profitable, winning niche in fasteners and connectors is best developed with strong merchandising, offering a wide selection with deep stock, knowledgeable employees, good housekeeping, customer education and letting your market know what you have.

Tty a new tact to sell more deck accessories
A CCORDING to a recent survey, approximately ZlVo lof U.S. households have decks with 78% of them cmsuucted of long-life pressure treated lumber.
Does this mean that retailers should cross these homeownefs off as possible customers for decks of pressure tneated products? Definitely not! Many of the basic 8'x8' squarcs built to satisfy a developer's promise of a deck are ripe for updating.
"Th€tre's lots of sales potential for sophisticated dealerswho realize decks are an ideal spring or summer home improvement project," explains Osmose spoke swoman Suzanne Pacitti.
"Using their deck design programs, retailers can show homeowners how to install accessories such as railings, balusters or spindles to update an existing plain vanilla
Turned opidle deck, turning it into a stunning outdoor area"
Many homeowners are unaware that deck accessories ranging from contemporary to colonial are available at home centers and think they have no choice but to live with the "postage stamp that came with their home," she points out. However, a salesperson using a deck design package can easily show them how to expand and enhance their basic desigl or enclose it with a railing to make it safer for young children.
If the deck size is satisfactory, the addition of decorative ball tops and spindles on a railing echoing the style of the hone or an arbor to offer mce shade may be all that is necessary. Smallish decks can be enlarged by extending the foundation and flooring, then adding a railing u arbor.
accessed by stairs with a decorative handrail.
Whatever the choice, ready-to-install components are usually available and easy for a d-i-yer to add.
Built-in benches, tables, planter boxes, storage chests and sandboxes are other options, but updating and improving is not limited to the deck. There are related projects that enhance the deck and increase the livability of the outdoor area. Other
possibilities are gazebos, trellises, often with seating aleas, tree houses, cooking centers, children's play equipment, wind screens and privacy fences.
Low voltage lighting systems, insect screening for decks, porches or gazebos, outdoor fumiture, barbecues, pots, containers, plants, gardening equipment and products are addon sales to a deck improvement project.

"Wood Works" Helps Dealers
Dealers can increase sales with the "Wood Works" and other messages selling the environmental superiority of wood, a recent Western Wood Products Association survey discovered.
Figures show 22Vo of retail customers and 28Vo of wholesale customers are more comfortable buying environmentally certified lumber. Some 204o of these customers answered "perhaps" or "yes" when asked if they'd be willing to pay more for such products.
Lumber having a Scientific Certification Systems/TVestern Wood Products Association stamp along with an Environmental Report Card will have a tremendous advantage in the marketplace, according to survey results. Both will enable dealers to satisfy environmentally-minded customers.
Deadbeats On The Pacific
Bill paying performance lags behind last year with the Pacific region the slowest in the nation.
"California's poor perfomrance has been the heavy anchor on the region for some time," Dun & Bradstreet reporB.
Small and medium-size businesses led the way in improving bill paying nationwide at the end of 1993, but it was not enough. The bill-paying rate is behind last year's level. "Despite the recent glowing reports of economic improvement" many business are still under tremendous financial strain," the credit-rating company concludes.
Retailer Ships To Russia
Three overseas containers of lunber and building materials have been sent to Russia from Ganahl Lumber Co.'s Garden Grove, Ca., location.
The materials will be used to build three model homes outside Moscow. Ten pallets of hardware alone were packed in what Barclay called a "yard event" because it called on the efforts and expertise of so many of his staff.
The Ganahl crew was responsible for researching product specs, assembling the required tools and materials and packing the shipment during the last week of February.

Borate Use Increases In Hawaii
A new borate pressure treatment is becoming hot construction news in the Hawaiian Islands.
Introduced to the Islands in 1992, borate treatments have expanded rapidly. About 99Vo of the treated framing supplied on Oahu by Honsador is now pressure reated with borates, says president Nick Cleghorn.
A new cganization, PacChem, has been established !o provide support services to Hi-Bor borate users in Hawaii. Sub-licensees, who either are or will eventually be producing HiBor treated franing, are Hilo Wood Treating Co., Inc.; Midpac Lumber Co., Ltd.; Honolulu Wood Treating Co., Ltd., and HPM Building Supply.
While boates have not been widely used in the past as a wood preservative, they were first mined in the U.S. in 1876 and have been used in everything from insecticides to brain tumor trcafrients.
U.S. Borax's hademarked HiBor reportedly is effective with Douglas fir, long the favored species in the Islands. The borate treament is able to penetrate the Douglas fir framing lumber.
The borate treaEnent provides protection ftom wood decaying fungi and wood destroying insects, including the voracious and all-too-prevalent Formosan tennite. It is designed for above-ground use where the material is not pennanently exposed to rain, such as in frarning, the major market for pressure treated wood in Hawaii.
Many warranties for pressure treated wood were conditioned on the use of a soil hea[nent every three years. The U.S. Borax warranty of Hi-Bor is not conditioned on periodic treafiient, but does require an inspection every three years.
Tad Ogi, president, Honolulu Wood Treating, says, 'Wood treated with CCA or ACZA preservatives will still be used for construction with direct exposure to the weather, such as d@ks, fences or landscape timbers, but it is great to have the borate alternative for framing lumber."
Fed Projects Spur Metric Use
Pushed by federal construction, virtually all U.S. construction could be converted to metric within the next
five to ten years.
Most federal agencies met the goal of designing all new projects in metric by January 1994 and some exceeded ir.
Federal construction appropriations total over $50 billion with about $20 billion ready for or in rhe design or construction stage. By 1996, federal metric work will approach $50 billion, not including state and local matching funds.
With so much money allotted to federal construction, it is likely that eventually all construction will convert to metric.

"For the first time, we will be talking to our respective members'customers with a unified industry voice about the common environmental attributes of all wood products."
Retailers, wholesalers, builders, remodelers, engineers, architects and industrial customers will be targeted. A oneday symposium is in the offing at a date to be announced and the first of a series of statewide builder seminars have been held in Jacksonville and Orlando, Fl., by APA and the Florida Wood Council.
Remodeling Spending Increases
After a dramatic remodeling activity increase nationwide in 1993, the possibility of remodeling expenditures overtaking new constuction spending by 2000 is in the offing.
Total residential improvements and repair expenditures for second quarter 1993 reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $112.4 billion, up 16%o over frst quarter figures, according to U.S. Commerce Department figures. Spending was $70.8 billion for improvements, a 27Vo increase over the previous quarter and the highest in six years, and M1.6 billion for maintenance and repain.

Clinton Plan Devised lllegally
A federal judge has ruled that the Clinton Administration illegally developed ia Pacific Northwest forest management plan butrefused a timber industry request to block its implementation.
Ruling on a suit brought by the Northwest Forest Resource Council, the U.S. disrict judge said that the Administration repeatedly violated the Federal Advisory Committee Act's requirements for open proceedings in developing the Option 9 plan.
Yet, he wrote, an injunction would be "premature" since at this point the plan is merely a written prescription. Other courts could still find the violations serious enough to block decisions called for in the plan.
"The injunction is probably less important than the fact that the Administration's plan has been found to be legally flawed by the very first review that took a look at it," said Mark Rey, American Forest & Paper Association.
An Administration official said the judge's ruling would have little practical effect

Store Protests Gratfiti Law
Buena Park Lumber Co., Buena Park, Ca., is protesting a tough graffiti law passed by the city.
Bruce Whitaker, controller, attended a city council meeting to protest a law that requires businesses to secure in a closed cabinet or other storage device any aerosol paint containers, felt tip markers or devices capable of "being used to leave a visible mark at least one-eighth of an inch in width." Items in this category would have to be dispensed to customers by employees.
Claiming the requirement a costly expense to a retail store, whitaker said a voluntary program would have been "better suited." Another merchant said his store had spent $50 o comply with the law, but Whitaker said it would cost "many times more than $50" to comply with the ordinance at Buena Park Lumber.
Forest lnfo Radio Broadcast
Motorists traveling through some forest areas in Oregon can tune in a pre-recorded information message on their radios.
For example, a traveler at Coos Bay on Highway 101 can learn about the area in a five minute message by turning his radio to a low power frequency announced on a highway sign. Highway 26 between Portland to the coast and I-5 between Roseburg and Couage Grove also are part of the project sponsored by Oregon Forest Resources Institute and Oregon State University.
Cars must be traveling 50 mph, the range of 10 watts of power, to receive the entire message. In comparison, a few major stations have as much as 50,000 wans of power.

Neglected Juniper Given Trial Run
Long regar{ed as a scrub tree, juniper may soon be available as an alternative to cedar.
Short and slow-growing, juniper trees in eastern Washington and eastern Oregon forests were typically bulldozed. But logging resfictions in Douglas fr forests have made cedar products scarcer and more expensive.

Juniper's properties appear to be quite similar to cedar's. Its close-knit cell structure minimizes chemical penetration in pressure treatment" but it doesn't need it. Juniper is naturally decay, fungus and tennite-resistant. The wood also contains an oil that gives it a distinctive arom4 sweet and pungent, similar to incense cedar's scent. Once dried, juniper appears to be more like aldo.
When Bob Shepard, co-owner and gen. mgr., Castle Rock Building Supply, Castle Rock, Wa., heard that juniper could be used as an alternative to cedar, he wanted in. The retailer tried to persuade other dealen to share the expense of a test load, but got no takers. "What anazed me is with all the advantages of it, I couldn't interest anyone else," he said. "No one was willing to take a chance."
So, he ordered his own load, which arrived late last year. Working with one sample and a finn belief in the species, Shepard sarted a waiting list and pre-sold much of the order.
Castle Rock is stocking 4x4 fence posts up through 6x8 landscape timbers. But the Klamath Falls, Or., manufacturer and its representative, Idaho Timber Corp., Boise, Id., are also experimenting with 2x6 radius edge decking, dimension hurber, split rail fencing and veneers.
The University of Monana recently putjuniper though crcrtification testing to precisely determine its properties and capabilities. Idaho Timber is weighing those results to "see what direction we want to go with it, if any," said marketing mgr. Steve Hollingworth.
The wood was harvested east of Washington and Oregon's Cascade Mountains, but about eight other classifications of juniper grow tbroughout theU.S.
The "new" wood is providing another benefit. The Klamath Falls mill that manufactures juniper had been closed. Reopening itput2?pple back to work.
Milling House Steps lt Up
Custom Mills Inc., Industry, Ca., has implemented a new moulding system, marking a giant step forward ino 'Just-in-time" manufacturing in the woodworking industry.

The milling house has added a Weinig Unimat 23 moulder and a Rondamat 934T tooling grinder, aimed at reducing set-up times and increasing productivity.
"The new moulder has more than doubled the production of the two moulders it replaced," said supervisor Fred Jones, noting the Unimat 23 is capable of good finish quality at speeds in excess of 70 ft. per minute verses the 3G55 ft. per minute on the old style moulders. 'Finish quality is very good at these higher speeds because of 8000 rpm spindles and a very stable machine."
24o/oHousing Rebound
Housing starts in C:lifornia in 1994 arc expected to reach 105,000 units, a 247o rebound from 1993's U,6f,8, forecast the Construction Industry Research Board.
Added manager Dan Jones: "We set up in 15 minutes on most pattem changes compared to the houf to hourand-a-half times on the old machines. This allows more set-ups per day on short run production, which has become more common in the industry."
The moulder's production capabilities approach the speed of a jointed moulder without the hassle of multilmife tooling and jointing.
The new tooling grinder enables the operator to "keep up" with the quick set-up capacity of the moulder. Ext€nsive operator training was conducted at Michael Weinig's Statesville, N.C., facility, as well as ongoing training at Custom Mills.
"The custom milling industry is very competitive these days," said owner Jeny Lapin. "Quality, speed and price are of paramount importance. The Weinig system allows us to perform well in this arena-"
Established in 1957, custom Mills employs 45 people on a 3-ll2 rcre site, using 11 moulders, four planers, five rip saws, a r€saw, profile sander and cut-to-length capability in its daily operation.
I\HANCES are your structural Vpanel sales deparunent is fielding more and more questions about orienrcd smnd board. What is it? Why isn't it bettef looking? what's it for? How do you use it?
OSB: what, where, whehr why & how
What is OSB?
Oriented suand board" or OSB, is an engineered panel product designed for strucnral applications in residential and nonresidential buildings. Because of its strength, availability and environmental friendliness, it's a product builders and remodelers should consider.
Why don't the panels look more like plywood?
OSB panels have a mouled exterior because they are composed of compressed wood strands arranged in layers at right angles to one another and bonded with fully waterproof adhesive. This cross lamination creates strength and stiffness that merits a perfonnance rating.
What does performance rated mean?
A perfonnance rated wood product meets performance requirements based on an intended end use. The structural wood panel performance standard provides a cornmon performance baseline for all panel types, regardless of manufacture. These standards and ratings guarantee top performance. They are similar to the perfonnance standards and tests used in the electronics, automotive and aircraft industries.
What is OSB rated for?
The American Plywood Association uses three basic performance standards for oriented strand board: structural adequacy, dimensional sta-

bility and bond durability. Perfonnance criteria for these have been established by building code requirements and panel products tests. Typical tests include linear expansion, racking, uniform load, concentrated static load, impact resistance, direct fastener withdrawal and lateral fastener strength. OSB panels manufactured under APA performance standards are rated fon three end uses: single layer flooring (APA Rated SutrdI-Floor), exterior siding (APA Rated Siding) and floor, wall and roof sheathing (APA Rated Sheathing).

How can I tell if they are APA Rated?
All APA Rated products are stamped with the APA trademark which identifies them and gives information about their perfonnance.
\ilhere do you use OSB?
OSB is a good choice for home construction. Panels are strong and designed to resist racking and shape distortion under high wind and earthquake forces. With excellent fastener-holding capability even when nailed close to the edge, they are lightweight relative to their size, easy
to handle and install. They resist deflection and bending, absorb shock, have no lmots or core voids and don't delamin:ate or splil Because it's made of wood, OSB is a natural insulator and protects against heat loss and condensation.
Does OSB have special uses?
APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor, available with square or tongue-andgroove ends, is a combination subfloor-underlayment panel designed for use under carpet and pad. If it is used with tile or linoleum, an additional thin layer of underlayment is recommended. APA Rated Siding comes in both panel and lap fomt in a variety of surface treatments and takes paint readily.
Is OSB suitable for d-i-y use?
OSB is not just for Professional builders and remodelers. OSB panels can be an economical, versatile choice for many do-it-yourself projects including partitions, cabinets, shelving, backboard and toys. OSB panels manufactured for d-i-y use do not have exposure or span ratings.
Why do you say it's "environ-
mentally friendly?"
Although OSB has been around for over 10 years, it has recently been recognized as an environmentally friendly engineered wood product. Severe harvest restrictions have underlined the importance of OSB's ability to utilize low-cost hardwoods, plantation thinnings and small, fastmaturing species grown in managed forests or tree farrns. OSB uses 8590Vo of the log with the bark, saw trim and sawdust usually converted inSo energy or pulp chips. OSB panels continue to be environmentally friendly after installation. Bonded with fully waterproof phenolic resins, they are exempt from HUD emission testing and certification requirement. Next time a customer asks, "What's that funny stuff?," teu him!

BTUs, oil equivalent, per ton), the National Research Council's Committee on Renewable Resources for Indusfiial Materials concluded that producing a ton of steel requires 50.3 million BTUs as opposed to 2.9 million BTUs for a ton of softwood lumber, a ratio of approximately 17 to 1.
A 1991 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency listing of toxic substances in millions of pounds released and

transfened in the manufacturing process shows lumber at 38; peuoleum, 103; plastics, 195; fabricated metals, 207, and primary metals, 757. The perfect manufacturing pfocess does not exist, but some are more gentle on the environment than others.
Wood wins hands down for resource renewability. Once iron ore is mined or oil is consumed to create plastics and resins, the resource is gone. Nature will create new deposits, but a million years is too long to be practical.
Trees are a renewable resource. Timber growth today exceeds harvesting by over 359o. A balance between growth and removal has existed for the last 50 years. Long tenn survival of the industry depends on correct management of land and resources.
New technologies utilize forest resources more efficiently. In door, millwork, plywood and siding operations, our goal is to use the entire tree. Other wood product manufacturers fy to do the same. The need to conserve and use wood to its best advantage has led !o btter products such as engineered wood.
Biodegradability is a final consideration. Wood wins again because it is natural. While wood waste decomposes in a relatively short time, with no harm to the land, uncertainty exists about alternative products.

Day Labor Sites Cause Grief
Several home centers in the metropolitan Los Angeles, Ca., area are working with county and city officials to solve the problem of day laborers congregating at ttre stores seekrng work.
Management of a HomeBase at Slauson and Fairfax Avenues in Los Angeles is cooperating with County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke to set up restrooms and facilities for day laborers at the store or close by.
Monrovia city officials are working with Home Depot to create a day laborer waiting area on a parking lot across the street from the store. A makeshift employment center would operate out of a city-owned failer.
Immigration and Naturalization Service raids in Monrovia in February arrested 32 illegal aliens from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. If undocumented workers are hired from sanctioned locations, the employer, not the home center, city or county, could face penalties, an INS official said.
Sierra Madre and Pasadena also are seeking ways to deal with complaints about sites where day laborers gather. Los Angeles County is considering an ordinance banning day laborers in unincorporated areas.
Three Injured In Home
Store engineers are seeking the cause of an accident, involving falling boxes of ceiling tiles at a Fullerton, Ca., Home Depot.
A woman, a six-year-old boy believed to be her grandson and a male family member were taken to local medical centers with minor injuries, firefighters said.
Lumber Company High On Hemp

C&S Building Supply, Harrisburg, Or., hopes soon to introduce composite building products produced from a novel wood substitute: hemp.
Owner William Conde sees the strong, fast-growing fiber crop as a remedy to the dwindling supply of harvestable timber. '"The truth of the matter is that we're running out of tr@s, and hemp is the best fiber plant on the face of the earth," he told the Multnamah County Businc ss Journal.
The company hopes to import hemp fiber from Hawaii. An undisclosed Oregon manufacturer would then process the materid into particleboard.
So far, C&S has imported about 1,500 pounds of hemp from France. Washington State University researchers have turned the material into prototype building materials. The hemp particleboard is just as durable as wood counterparts, WSU said.
The stalky plant grows well in the Northwest, and mills would not require extensive retooling to use hemp in composite building materials, WSU
added. For years, former Eastern Bloc countries have used hemp in paper and building materials. Since England lifted its 30-year-old ban on growing hemp in February, a consortium of 20 English farmers planted 1,500 acres of hemp, mostly to be sold to paper mills.
The main obstacle is that hemp fiber comes from marijuana plants, banned in the U.S. since the late 1940s. Although hemp is the same genus and species as the illegal wee( industrial varieties of hemp have low concentrations of marijuana's intoxicating drug THC. And special permits from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency are still required to grow even industrial hemp.
The other problem is the price. Unprocessed hemp fiber can be imported for $200 to $250 a ton, said C&S. The cheapest wood fiber costs less than $50 a ton.
Growing hemp in the Northwest would slash the cost of the material and quicken the commercialization of hemp-based products, said C&S. Hemp famring requires less labor and
fewer agricultural chemicals than a grass seed oop.
Hemp's future as building products in the U.S. will depend on finding an affordable source of raw materials. "We have everything in place. All we need is the hemp," said Conde.
C&S hopes to purchase up to 20 tons of hemp fiber from Hawaiian broker Roger Christie, who is working to obtain a special permit from the DEA.
Though Christie has been trying to bring commercial hemp production !o Hawaii for six years, he sees opportunity in the local sugar industry's devashtion by foreign competition.
"The major landowners are bankrupt or near bankrupt and they're looking for new crops," said a local agronomist, who said hemp could grow year-round in Hawaii's ropical climate.
Meantime, C&S will continue its campaign, touting its message on a lumber truck adorned with drawings of cannabis leaves, peace signs and the slogan "Yes Trees are Renewable, but Hemp is Sustainable."

WWPA spring meeting
slightly fatalistic, awaiting the next card dealt
Western Wood Products Association was not held at San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel. The La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs, Ca., was this year's venue. But despite the desert sefting, the association staff managed to create a replica of the lobby clock from the St. Francis, meeting spot for innumerable gatherings over the years (seephoto).
Unlike previous yean, the mood of those attending w:rs one of general anticipation, rather than an expectation of a certain scenario. Battered by a pause in the economy generally attributed to severe winter storms in the Fast and continuing constraints on timber supply, the lumbermen seemed
WP
Both in the fonnal member meetings and in the infonnal gatherings of others who traditionally attend the spring meeting, the mood concerning timber was grim. Horror forecasts on supply and price fronts as the industry struggles to live and work in a changed world were voiced.
Robert Hunt, president of the Western Wood hoducts Association, warned of a stormy outlook for western timber supply and its potential to create volatility in lumber markets. He said 1994 should see gains in housing shrts and other traditional wood markets, thanks to a slowly expanding economy. But continued gridlock on public

forests in the West will force Western lumber producers to further scale back production, disrupting raditional lumber market supply and demand relationships.
"Some have blamed the industry for the higher prices, but recent Western lumber production statistics illusuate the sinmtion: there are sirnply not enough logs available to meet long-tern demand," Hunt explained.
He said Westem lumber shipments to U.S. markets in 1994 should total 15.93 billion board feet 8.37o below 1993 figures, despite an expected
8.9Vo increase in housing stafis this year. That volume will be off.30Vo from historic levels of 22.4 billion

The 1993 decline in Western lunber production has affected prices paid by lumber users.
statistics show Douglas fir lumber sold for an average of $535 per thousand board feet in January, 35Vo higher than a year ago and $234 more than in January 1992. Other Western species have seen similar increases. Ponderosa pine reached $787 per

thousand board feet in January, up $130 in just one year.
Hunt said higher prices and the changing timber supply have led some to criticize the quality of lumber available today. That criticism has no basis in fact he claimed.
"Those who buy Westem lumber today can be assured it will meet or exceed the performance standards required for such products. The lock-up of mature federal forests has reduced the amount of 'clear' products available, but at the same time led to increased percentages of products most specified in construction, such as Standard and Better," said Hunt.
"Westem producers remain committed to providing quality products to their customers. Those buyers who feel the lumber is not graded correc0y have a nunber of options available, from talking with the mill to calling a reinspection by grading agencies such as WWPA," he said.
WWPA's forecast for 1994 predicts lumber consumption will lotal
46.33 billion board feet, up 0.5Vo from 1993. Housing starts should total 1.4 million, compared to 1.29 million last year. While housingwhich consumes nearly 40Vo of the lumber used annually - will be up nealy 107o, the lumber volume used here will grow by just one-third that rate. Much of that is due to curtailed log supplies, lumber substitutes and slightly smaller houses.
The decline in Western lumber shipments will be in contrast with srong gains by mills in the South and imports. The South is expected to ship 15.1 billion feet in 1994, an increase of 5.9Vo. Imports, mostly from Canada, hit an all-time record volume in 1993 ar 15.26 billion feet. The volume of imports should grow another 4Vo this year to 15.85 billion board feet" representing a third of the lumber used in the U.S.
U.S. exports of both logs and lumber should see declines in 1994. WIMPA estimates lumber exports will decline ll.6%o to 2.1 billion feet Log exports, at 1.9 billion feet, will shrink by about 157o. The volume of logs exported from U.S. pofts has fallen by more than half in the past five years.

Hardwood finish pnmer
II'ARDWOODS are among the Ilmost beartiful and versatile natural materials available. Their warmth and beauty can be further enhanced by applying some type of finish. The best finish for a particular hardwood, like color, is a matter of personal opinion. If applied correctly, most modern finishes will enhance the wood and protect it for many years.
Story at a Glance
How haldwoods benefit from proper finishing ... eramining the
A common misconception about wood finish is that it will hide flaws in the wood. Yeg acually, the opposite is true - finish makes flaws more noticeable. So regardless of the finish use4 the wood surface should be as free as possible from any imperfections before applying the finish.
Though manufacturers typically use a fine grit paper in final sanding, this should not be considered a finish sand. End users should apply a finish sand before finish, removing any gouges, rough spots, scratches or lorn grain. The beginner or non-professional can start with a good peneEating oil, such as Danish oil, particular-
ly when the wood is to be left in its natural state.
When working with a panel face composed of multiple pieces of veneer, a good sealer should be applied before staining to avoid a "balber pole" effect. Additionally, both sides should be sealed to avoid an unbalanced condition that could result in cupplng or warping.
A quality finish adds depth, richness and clarity to the hardwood. Poor finishes look dull, flat and unnahral. But you can tell as much by touch as you can by sight. To examine a finish, run your fingers over the surface.
Are surfaces smooth and free of drips, runs and bubbles?
Are comers free of srealcs and finish material?
Is the wood grain enhanced?
ls the stain uniform and wellblended?
On furniture, are hard-to-reach areas (near joints or carvings) smooth, evenly sAined and ftee of glue?
A furniure finish, fr exanrple, can involve anywhere from three ta 25 or more steps, including the initial sanding, rubbing, glazing and highlighting grain patterns. Furniture in general use must be polished O seal the pores of the wood, protect the surfaces, accentuate and enhance the beauty of the figure, create highlights and provide as much resistance against heat or split liquids as possible.
Types of finish include:
The Merchant Magazlne

. Wax polish (the softened wax penetrates the wood surface and enhances the figure, giving it great depth and wannth).
Oil polish (applied in thin layers, oil - often linseed - absorbs oxygen, dries and fonns a light protective film on it).
. Varnishes (combinations of oils and resins for simultaneously protecting wood and improving beauty).
French polish (a specialist craft using shellac, alcohol, oil and pumice).
Lacquers (nitro-cellulose, synthetic, acid catalyst and polyurethane).
Wood stains (while the most troublesome to apply, water, spirit/alcohol or oil-based stains penetrate fafuly deeply and yield the clearest finish).
Finish Maintenance
. Dust with a soft cloth, following the grain pattern of the wood.
. Dust often with a lightlymoistened cloth to remove everyday abrasive particles from wood surfaces. A dry cloth can leave hairline scratches on the finish.
. Surfaces may also be cleaned with a mild non-alkaline soap and water using a damp sponge or cloth. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and buff lightly, following the grain.
Wood finishes benefit from an occasional waxing or polishing.
