Give away your inventory?

EECENT cutbacks in federally funded comFlmunity service programs have already provided some alert companies with new promotion and image building opportunities. With a reasonable expenditure of money, some time and imagination, virtually any retailer or wholesaler should be able to involve himself in a project that is good for the community and even better for the company.

A case in point is a recent paint giveaway by United Coatings, a large paint manufacturer and a supplier to many well known mass merchandisers. The company, which has a facility in Vernon, a Los Angeles, Ca., suburb, cooperated with the local Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA in nearby Huntington Park to spark a program to help residents paint-up for spring and encourage other businesses to become interested in their local communities.

United Coatings announced that they would give away, absolutely free, two gallons of paint, first come, first served, one to a family, for two

hours, beginning at l0 a.m. in the chamber parking lot. The first of more than 850 Angelenos arrived at 5 a.m. More than 1700 gallons of paint were given away in less than two hours.

Do you think that made the company any friends? Do you think that with a single promotional event United Coatings made thousands of people far more fix-up oriented than they had ever been before? You better believe it.

Giveaways of merchandise for the good of the community is something that people remember a long time. It can establish a positive concept in the public mind that will linger for years. A retailer also can use these techniques to neatly identify his store as the headquarters for any repair/remodel/d-i-y activity involving the home. This kind of a community promotion can create favorable publicity and do it in one day.

It is expected that community service fund cut backs by all levels of governme6t will increase, allowing even more operating r6om for the inventive firm to help itself while helping others.

Pressure treated wood market expands

EROPERLY pressure-treated

F wood in higher grades is being marketed successfully at the retail level for consumer use as decking, fencing and landscaping, uses that historically have been the home ground of the so-called durable species, cedar and redwood.

Pressure treatments are applied only once, yet when the product is installed properly, it will give decades of useful, maintenance-free service. Preservatives are applied under pressure at commercially licensed wood preserving plants. Paint-on, brush-applied and dipping products are not considered permanent. They are acceptable for coating cut ends of treated products; however, by themselves, they have no recognition for long service life.

The benefits of pressure treated wood take on increased value in today's economy, particularly when you consider the increase in do-ityourself products for the great percentage of homeowners who have elected to upgrade their current residence rather than incur a higher mortgage payment resulting from a decision to move. A known fact-people are staying in their homes much longer than in prior years. With increasing gasoline costs, they are putting more dollars into their backyards and spending more time there. Pressure treated wood insures the long term serviceability of their residential project. Once done properly, the work should not need replacement.

Preservatives fall into two main groups: the first group is heavy oils such as creosote and pentachlorophenol in oil; the second group consists of waterborne salt systems such as ACA and CCA. Pentachlorophenol inoil and creosote are not suitable for most residential uses because of their odor, lack of paintability, and potential problems of staining clothes and shoes.

We'll concentrate on the waterborne salt area here. because it is best

suited for consumer products. The retail lumber dealer, therefore, should attain a broad education about the waterborne salt treatment. He should talk directly to his wood preserving supplier who is available to help educate both the dealer and the store personnel, including yard personnel. Treated lumber requires slightly different yarding and handling techniques.

There has been a rapid increase in the number of articles on pressure treated wood in the last three years. Volume rate records are being set in the amount of pressure treated wood that moves into the three areas mentioned earlier-decking, fencing and landscaping. Demand is such in the Midwest and South that 2590 of all southern yellow pine is now pressure treated by waterborne systems. This trend is beginning to show in the western United States. Starting in Washington and Oregon, pressure treated wood is beginning to erode the long held private domain of cedar and redwood. Pressure treated West Coast hem-fir, Douglas fir and Ponderosa pinearemaking a welcomed entrance into the do-ityourself marketplace.

Why is this happening? First, cedar is becoming very expensive. Second, sap common grades of red-

wood are not able to truly perform in direct ground contact or in high exposure, high-risk situations. Redwood is an excellent product and for decades it has provided a wide range of products to national consumer markets; but, with second and third growth stumpage entering the marketplace, there is a much higher incidence of sapwood. Sapwood provides little or no natural protection against decay, rot, or insect attack.

Groundline moisture in higher rainfall areas is a notorious culprit in rapidly decaying fence posts. In areas of high termite infestation like California, redwood posts sold in sap-common grades are also showing signs of early failure, usually in five to seven years.

Thus, there is a rapidly evolving place for pressure treated wood in our markets. With proper controls at the pressure treating plant, clean, well presented products are emerging for your consideration. Pressure treated wood products that have been developed for these markets are readily available, attractive in appearance, and sold in commonly used sizes and lengths.

There are excellent marketing programs to assist the retail dealer in promoting these products successfully. Ask your supplier.

Dealers should be especially aware of these two key terms when reviewing any product line for their yard: retention and penetration. The terms are closely linked and absolutely vital to a sound merchandising program. Together in proper combination, they are the key to long service life and the success of the merchandising program.

Retention is the amount of preservative deposited in the wood as a result of pressure treating process. Applicable standards allow for three basic levels. Higher levels are provid-

Dealers see bright future

pressure treated wood

HERE it really counts in the lumber businessthe lumber yardpressure treated wood is achieving sales gains and recognition for the versatility of the product.

The Western Wood Preservers Institute recently polled dealers in different geographic areas to learn what their experiences have been in selling pressure treated lumber. Dealers are consistent in their comments and uniformly praise treated wood's immediate past growth while predicting a bright future of increased sales.

Story at a Glance

Dealers praise treated wood... lack of dealer knowledge can discourage sales...consumer education necessary...excellent market potential.

Dealers say the price, appearance and quality of pressure treated lumber are the most important sales factors. The biggest headache in selling treated wood seems to be the lack of product knowledge by the sales staff. When counter salesmen know the facts about treated wood, its advantages and uses, they are effective in selling it.

"There is a lot of misunderstanding about what treated wood really is and what it does," explains Frank Powers of Seattle Lumber Co. in Renton, Wa. "Treated lumber is still a new enough concept that most of the general public needs to be educated about it."

Advising the customer seems to be what sells theproduct. Hector Rochon of Herr Lumber Co. in Seattle says, "We find that once we show people the product and tell them how long it will last, they don't quarrel over price."

Another important factor in selling treated wood is appearance. "Uniformity of appearance in both the wood and the color of the treatment are important in closing sales. ' '

Rochon adds, "if they don't like the way it looks, we have a good chance of losing the sale."

Bob Gallo, Beronio Lumber, San Francisco, Ca., says some customers object to the color on decking. "On the understructure, they don't care." So, Gallo turns this objection into an opportunity by recommending treated wood for the critical understructure of decks, with customers using redwood or cedar for decking.

Why doesn't Gallo just recommend all redwood or cedar for decks? "The statistics back up the quality of the pressure treated product and also the longevity of it." Beronio stocks a fairly large supply of treated wood, and also handles industrial treated products such as fire-retardant treated lumber and plywood.

What about the future? Gallo says, "San Francisco is redwood oriented and pressure treated takes a lot of selling. But, I am dedicated to pressure treated wood. I have a high regard for it."

Depending on the selling region, dealers have different experiences with pressure treated vs. redwood and cedar. Jack Edl, vice president and general merchandise manager for Wickes Corp. which operates 27 home improvement stores in 38 states, says "Pressure treated wood is a universally accepted product, but, when you're in the western market where redwood is more

ABCs of pressure treated wood industry

IIHE PRESSURE treated wood industry is adding I new terms and words to the building materials vocabulary. This glossary will help the retailer to be better informed.

Air-Dried - Drying of lumber by exposure to air. Lumber may be either covered or uncovered. (See Seasoning & Moisture Content)

Annual Growth RingA layer of wood growth added to a tree in a single growing season. These can usually be seen on the ends of boards.

ACA, ACCSee Preservatives.

AWPBAmerican Wood Preservers Bureau. The group that certifies pressure treating companies and assures product consistency and reliability. Also administers the AWPA quality-assurance lumber stamping program. Lumber stamped with the AWPB mark meets the standards for the particular level of pressure treatment indicated on the stamp.

AWPIAmerican Wood Preservers Institute. A marketing and communications organization comprised of companies in the pressure treated wood industry. Communicates with the general public and interested professionals about pressure treated wood products.

Assay (retention by)The determination of preservative retention in treated wood by analysis of samples of wood. Usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or kilograms per cubic meter (kglm3).

Board FootA standard measurement of lumber. One board foot is represented by a board I ft. long, 12 in. wide, and I in. thick or its cubic equivalent. Generally, lumber I in. or more in thickness has board footage calculated on the nominal (rather than actual) thickness of the board.

CellGeneral term for the structural units of plant tissue, such as wood fibers. In pressuretreating, chemical preservatives penetrate the cells of the wood to protect them from attack by insects and decay.

CCASee Preservatives.

CreosoteSee Preservatives.

Cylinder, TreatingA steel tank, usually horizontal, which may be opened and closed at one or both ends. Wood is placed in the cylinder for treatment, usually by a pressure process in which chemicals are introduced into the cylinder. Also called a Retort.

DecayDecomposition of wood substance by wooddestroying fungi. Occurs where wood is exposed to moisture and air in a temperate climate. Also called rot, and erroneously referred to as "dry rot."

DurabilityLasting qualities or permanence in service of wood. Decay and insect resistance is more specific term, indicating resistance to attack by wood-destroying fungi and termites under conditions favorable to their growth.

Fiber Saturation PointThe stage in the drying or wetting of wood at which the cell walls are saturated and the cell cavities are free from water. For most woods, this occurs at about 3090 moisture content. (See Moisture Content)

Fungi - Tiny organisms that attack wood, using wood fibers as food when conditions of climate (air, moisture) are right. On the surface of lumber, fungi can darken the wood and make it slippery. Can cause severe deterioration of wood and the structural quality of lumber. In some areas, significant destruction of wood can occur in as few as 3-5 years.

Grade MarkIdentification of lumber with symbols of lettering to certify its quality of grade. Usually administered according to standards set by a lumber organization. Grade is based on the presence or absence of defects, such as knots, checks, decay, etc.

Green WoodFreshly sawed or undried wood.

HeartwoodThe wood extending from the pith (center) of the tree to the sapwood (newer wood fibers). The cells of the heartwood no longer participate in the life processes of the tree. Usually darker than sapwood.

InsectsMost commonly, termites which attack wood, using it as food.

Kiln-DriedLumber dried in a kiln using artificial heat. Process used to dry lumber to a moisture content below that obtained in air-drying. Drying device is called a "dry kiln."

Laminated T9ood - Layers of wood glued (usually) together with grain direction essentially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the assembly. Sometimes called a "glulam." Manufacturing process used to achieve a piece of lumber (sometimes called a "beam") larger than that obtainable with sawn lumber, or specifically designed for a certain application, such as a long span or unusual strength requirement.

Moisture ContentThe weight of water contained in wood, usually expressed as a percentage of the oven-dry weight of the wood. Equilibrium Moisture Content is the moisture content at which wood neither gains nor loses moisture when surrounded by air at a given relative humidity and temperature. Varies in different climates. Lumber is constantly subject to changes in its moisture

Pressure treated wood faces strict standards

IrWO FACTORS that assure the I durability of treated wood are the depth of penetration of preservative chemicals into the wood and the amount of preservatives retained in the wood.

Treatment of wood by the pressure process is the best technique yet devised to assure consistently adequate penetration and retention of preservatives in a wide variety of species. Non-pressure processes used to treat wood include brushing, dipping or spraying. Unfortunately, these are not as effective as pressure treating, and often do not provide wood with a significantly greater life span than no treating at all. Surface applications of preservatives tend to weather away, leaving the wood unprotected.

Pressure treating assures durability because the process drives preservative chemicals deep into the wood cells and "locks" them in permanently.

The treatment process begins with either air-dried or kiln-dried lumber since drying permits better penetration of preservatives and reduces checking of lumber.

Then, most lumber is incised to permit deeper and more uniform penetration. Sharp knives, or teeth, sink into the wood to a depth of between Vz and 3/r of an inch.

Next lumber is loaded on a tram which is run ontracks into a long steel cylinder. The cylinder is tightly sealedand filled with preservative chemicals. Pressure is applied inside the cylinder, forcing preservatives into the wood.

The amount of pressure and the length of time it is applied affect the penetration of the preservative. After the pressure period, the unused chemical is pumped back into a

storage tank. Quality control is impoftant. To measure the preservative penetration and retention, samples are laboratory tested for conformity to specification.

Representatives from the American Wood Preservers Bureau visit member plants fromtimeto time to repeat these tests. Periodic samples also are sent to the headquarter labs of AWPB in Virginia. This independent agency performs quality control testing to assure the wood meets the standards set to permit it to carry the appropriate Bureau marks.

These tests are performed to determine if the pressure process performed the desired result as well as to determine if the amount of preservative in the wood is adequate for the intended use. Wood to be used in ground contact requires a greater quantity of preservatives per cubic foot of wood than that used above the ground.

The mark of an approved standards-setting and quality control organization may appear on the lumber, indicating that it meets the penetration and retention requirements for the indicated usein ground contact or above ground.

Osmose K-55@ Lumber Gives You llore.

A lot of lumber products claim to be better than lumber pressure treated with Osmose K-5S preservative. Some claim to be "naturally resistant" to termites and decay. Others claim to have a beauty no treated lumber can match. What they fail to mention is that their durability is not consistently dependable, orthat their lumber often does not weather evenly. I FUNDAMENTAL change

in Ithe

Western lumber industry's priorities became official at the Western Wood Products Association's mid-March spring meeting as it took the first steps to meet its most critical marketing challenge since World War IL

Traditionally one of the U.S. lumber industry's strongest marketing-oriented trade groups, the association's attention for the last decade had been turned to "supply

side" raw materials problems. At the same time strong national housing markets had generally drawn heavily upon the industry's lumberproducing capacity without need for aggressive marketing activity.

"The days of our apathy toward the marketplace are over," John T. Casey, Jr. president of the Western Wood Products Association told the San Francisco meeting. "We can no longer accept industry-wide marketing programs that have

deterioratgd to unacceptable levels. "

He voiced strong support for marketing programs that "will provide the Western lumber industry with the opportunity to shape its own destiny. ' '

Casey noted much of the focus of the new efforts would be aimed at markets other than new home construction, with special attention to altering and expanding America's 82 million existing homes.

Those looking for better times in 1982 received some cautious optimism from WWPA exec. v.p. H.A. "Bob" Roberts. "The Western lumber industry should run at 8lqo of normal in 1982, compared to the 7790 showing in 1981," Roberts said in an economic outlook address to the board.

"New housing should total 1.2 million units, or 6790 of what we see as normal," he noted. Repair and remodeling, and all other new construction except residential (the industry's second largest market) should take 9590 of normal or 13.8 billion board feet. IfRESSURE TREATED lumber

F- is a building materid with a wide range of applications.

Because its increased use in decks, fences, retaining walls, walks and other outdoor projects has created more interest in its properties, Ifte Merchant went to the Western Wood Preserver's Institute for answers to its uses, applications, properties and other commercial factors.

The following is a series of questions and answers designed to bring to light more information on pressure treated wood and its properties.

Q: What is pressure treated wood?

A: Pressure treated wood is wood that has been impregnated with a preservative in a process that forces the chemicals under pressure deeply into the wood. The preservatives are locked permanently into the wood and are present in sufficient quantities to deter attack by insects (termites) and decay (fungi).

Q: Will wood used in outdoor landscaping projects be attacked by insects and decay?

A: Yes! Termites are active in many areas. They will attack wood in exposed landscape structures more readily than wood used in interior residential construction.

The heartwood (darker interior portion of the tree) of all woods has some natural durability. The heartwoods of some species, such as redwood and cedar, are more durable than other untreated species, however, this natural durability is extremely variable.

Q: How long will the treated wood last?

A: Pressure treated wood is classified by FHA, Uniform Building Code, and other authorities as a permanent building material. The Forest Products Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has concluded wood that has been pressure treated properly can last in excess of 50 years.

Q: Is pressure treated wood safe?

A: Yes. The preservatives are safe for normal contact by humans and animals. These treatments have been usedsuccessfully and safely throughout the world for over 40 years.

Q: Are there different levels of preservative treatment?

A: Yes. Depth of penetration and amount of preservative injected into the wood(retention) can vary substantially. Different levels are specified depending upon use. For outdoor home projects, two levels of treatment are available. LP-2 wood is treated to a minimum retention of .25lbs. per cubic foot. This is recommended for above-ground use and definitely should not be used for ground contact. LP-22 wood is treated to a minimum retention of .40 lbs. per cubic foot and can be used in ground contact.

Q: Is there a marking system for pressure treated wood?

A: Yes. All wood intended for outdoor use should bear the LP-22 mark of theAmerican Wood Preservers Bureau, the quality control agency for the wood preserving industry, or the mark of agencies approved by the building code.

Story at a Glance

Q: What about treatments where wood is sprayed or dipped?

A: Such treatments are not permanent and provide only superficial protection against decay and termites. Spraying and dipping are not approved by the building code.

Q: Is there any leaching of the preservatives out of the wood?

A: Essentially none. The preservatives have a low solubility level to water and consequently do not leach out of wood.

Q: What are some of the reasons to use pressure treated wood?

A: (1) Pressure treated wood lasts longer than untreated wood.

(2) Pressure treated wood doesn't need painting or staining, although it will take most finishes.

(3) Pressure treated wood costs less than heartwood grades of redwood and cedar sold for yard and landscaping use.

(4) Pressure treated wood looks good. It weathers to attractive light shades of green/brown and darkens substantially less than untreated woods.

(5) Pressure treated wood protects against termites and decay and reduces slipperiness frequently associated with untreated wood.

(6) Pressure treated wood can be used in contact with the ground and is approved by the building code for this use.

(7) Pressure treated wood is specified by a large and ever increasing number of architects and engineers for dependability.

(E) Pressure treated wood helps save our forests by lengthening the useful life of wood structures. Treated wood utilizes species that are readily available.

(9) Pressure treated wood avoids costly replacement costs.

HOME GENTER MERGHANT

uOUSING starts reaching a tt post war, all time low, lumber dealers are scratching to replace that builder business. There aren't too many directions in which the traditional lumber dealer can move. He can go after new remodeling/contractor business, or commercial business, or more do-ityourselfer business by expanding his product offering. Yet, there is a lot of business germane to the lumber dealer that some are letting slip away!

Even more than before, homeowners are seeking ways to cut their home energy expense. They're looking for the place they can trust, where they can get the knowledge, the products and the how-toinstall-it knowledge.

Ironically the lumber dealer who is scratching for volume to survive this terri-

ble interim economy is doing a very poor job of capitalizing on these homeowner needs. Instead of becoming the headquarters for energy saving products (which he has always carried in his inventory), instead of asking the homeowner to come to him for the information he needs to do the job of cutting fuel bills, they send him to the utility company for energy audits and then fail to ask the homeowner to come back to buywhat the utility company tells him to install.

Last week we conducted a small research project by phoning 22 retailers along the route that I will be traveling for a regional lumbermen's association. Our goal was to determine how these lumber dealers would handle a homeowner's inquiry about reducing energy costs in the home.

Frankly, except for one store inthe 22 we called, I would have been very disappointed in the waythe calls were handled

if I were the owner of those retail stores.

Not oneattempted to get thename of the caller.

. Only one of the 22 established nis store as being a headquarters for energy saving products.

o Almost all stores told our caller to go elsewhere for information.

o Until she actually led the store into it - only one asked our caller to come in and buy after she found out elsewhere what she wanted.

o One told the customer to shop the competition.

Up until now, we, as a retail industry, have too often been no more than order takers, rather than merchants, when vending energy saving products to the homeowner.

As brought out by this telephone survey, we have only been able to serve those customers who came to us knowing what they needed to cut their energy consumption. We haven't yet appealed to the much, much greater number who don't have the knowledge.

As an industry we have been allowing the high binders, the suede shoe guys, to have a field day soaking the public at the expense of the tax credit program. We'vc been standing by and letting the solar

According to Jeny Harwood, Harwood's Lumber Co., Rocky Ford, Co., chairman of the convention planning committee, speakers will be asked to address this subject. Exhibitors are being encouraged to emphasize how their products and services have responded to the many changes affecting the industryin recent years.

Political speakers, Harwood points out, will be asked to discuss how government h.rs responded to or caused changes and the effects of these changes. Other speakers will be asked to address "how to deal" with changes such as how to im-

prove sales, generate cash flow and improve image.

This year for the first time exhibitors will be encouraged to sell and offer sales specials. MSLBMDA will assist by pro-

viding pre-convention mailing lists and publicizing specials. In addition, the program will be designed so that specific events will attract "drop in" attendance from the Denver metro area.

content. Serious decay can occur in untreated wood when the moisture content is above the 30q0 fiber saturation point. Lumber is said to be reasonably protected from decay if it is maintained at a moisture content of l99o or less. This is essentially "dry" lumber.

PoleRound wood or log, generally used as utility poles or for house foundations. Most often pressure treated for durability.

Penetration - The depth to which preservative chemicals enter the wood.

PentaSee Preservative

Preservative, Oil-borneA wood preservative that is introduced into wood in the form of a solution in oil.

Preservative, WoodIncludes all chemicals or combinations of chemicals that will protect wood against deterioration from decay, insects, marine borers, fire, weathering, absorption of water and chemical action. Some commonly used preservative chemicals include: ACAammoniacal copper arsenite; ACCacid copper chromate; Creosotetar distillate; PentaPentachlorophenol dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent; CCA - Chromated copper arsenate. These chemicals will leave wood with a greenish tint, a natural brown color, or, in the case of creosote, a dark brown to black color.

Pressure TreatmentProcess of treating wood in a closed container where preservative or fire retardant is forced into the wood under pressure. Pressure is generally preceded or followed by vacuum.

Quality ControlIn pressure treating, the AWPB administers a quality control and inspection program that includes a quality wood-marking program to assure that treated wood will perform well in the use for which it was intended. Basically, lumber is treated to two different preservative retention and penetration levels: one for inground use (LP-22 mark) and one for lumber used above the ground (LP-2 mark).

RetortSee Cylinder, Treating.

RetentionSee Assay.

RotSee Decay.

SapwoodWood of pale color near the outside of the log. Under most conditions, the sapwood is more susceptible to decay than heartwood, and a log usually has a higher percentage of sapwood than heartwood. No species of wood has sapwood that is naturally resistant to decay and insects.

SersoningAlso known as "Drying." The removal of moisture from green wood to improve its serviceability. Can be accomplished by either air-drying or kilndrying. Seasoned wood will shrink less than unseasoned wood.

ShrinkageAs wood loses moisture, it shrinks. Essentially, wood does not shrink when it is above the fiber saturation point. Wood shrinks most in the direction of the annual growth rings (tangentially) and shrinks only about half as much across the rings (radially). It shrinks only slightly along the grain (longitudinally). This dimensional instability of wood below the fiber saturation point can distort the shape of wood pieces depending on the curvature of the annual rings. Kiln-drying minimizes the distortions that shrinkage can cause.

SAWP - Society of American Wood Preservers, Inc. An industry group which provides information on pressure treating standards, quality control programs and other technical assistance.

SPTASouthern Pressure Treaters Association. Industry group of professionals able to provide information on standards, quality control, technical assistance.

StrengthThe ability of a wood member to sustain stress without structural failure. Decay and insect attack signficantly reduce the strength of wood over a period of time. Some building codes require pressure treated wood for important structural members outdoors, because treating adds long-term durability to the wood, assuring the structural strength ofthe project.

Treating PressurePressure used in injecting the preservative into wood, usually expressed in pounds per square inch (psi).

Treltment, Brush - Application of a liquid preservative to the surface of lumber with a brush. Pressure treatment is far more effective in protecting the wood than brush treatment (or "dipping") since the pressure process locks the preservatives deeper into the wood cells. Surface treatments will weather away in a short time. Brush treatment is, however, used on cut ends of lumber

that has been pressure treated as an additional protective measure easily applied in the field.

UnderstructureThe important structural portion of a project such as a deck. Consists ofposts, joists, stringers, etc. that support the decking. Pressure treated wood is ideal for understructures, since it is economical and its durabilityis more uniform and dependable than "naturally durable" species of wood.

lVood Preservation

Treatment of wood with chemical preservatives which reduce susceptibility to deterioration by fungi, insects, or marine borers. Extending service life of outdoor wood projects through wood preservation extends our forest resources by making replacement of projects less frequent.

This unique system, which is said to impart improved control, efficiency and product quality, is the first of its kind to be used in the pressure treating industry which has a history dating back to the turn of the century.

Designed and developed by Walker-Williams Lumber Co., Hatchechubbee, Al., the system has proven its effectiveness during two years of simultaneous operation of four large pressure treating cylinders. Walker-Williams recently assigned to Koppers the worldwide

marketing and operating rights to the system.

The computerized treating system provides plant managers with improved flexibility and control of treating operations to reduce operating times and eliminate operator errors while optimizing processing control variables.

The system hardware and software is packaged at the Koppers facility in Conley, Ga.

One of the featured properties is that remote process control and monitoring are possible from great distances through telephone data line transmission. Development work is being pursued to transfer production data gathered from this system to computers already available for inventory and cost control.

Lumber Society Moves South

Russell H. McClain, No. 88090, Gurdon, Ark., Hoo-Hoo Club, has been named executive secretary of Hoo-Hoo International, the fraternal order of lumbermen.

He succeeded Cliff Cunningham, Norwood, Ma.,on Jan. l, 1982. International headquarters are being moved from Norwood to Gurdon.

Plans to transfer headquarters to Gurdon began with the 1978 Toronto convention. Dr. McClain, mayor of Gurdon, and Louis Cabe, whose family has been long-time leaders in Arkansas lumbering and forestry, appeared before the convention to offer a log building as new headquarters.

The building also houses a woodlands heritage museum developed by Hoo-Hoo. Since the museum was opened on April ll, 1981, hundreds of people have viewed the displays of lumbering equipment, tools, and lumbering and forestry pictures.

Plans areto publish theLog&Tally, and to center all operations of Hoo-Hoo International in Gurdon. Contributions and fund-raising activities have produced approximately $30,000 to refurbish and alter the building. The fraternity was founded in Gurdon in 1892.

sumption and exports should reach 33 to 34 billion b.f. in 1982. That's seven to eight billion feet off normal," Roberts said. The Western lumber producing region should produce 14.4 billion b.f., while the South is expected to add 6.5 billion feet. Canada should send slightly under l0 billion to the U.S., accounting for 3l9o of total U.S. consumption. The other 2.4 billion feet will come from the California Redwood producing region, Midwest lake states and the Northeast producing regions.

"To reach these numbers, interest rates must decline, customer confidence must increase, and we need to see more innovative financing from the financial institutions," Roberts said. "Government awareness of the importance homebuilding has on the health of the entire economy will also be needed," he noted.

A well received seminar on the opportunities in the pressure treated

Normal retentions follow: .25 pcfMost common retention, generally used for mudsill and by code must carry an LP-2 quality stamp of the American Wood Preservers Bureau (AWPB) if sold commercially. This retention permits above ground end uses only. It may be used for fence boards, fence rails and decking material.

.,10 pcfThis retention permits all ground contact end uses except All Weather Wood Foundation (AWWF). If sold in situations requiring building code approval, it must carry an AWPB LP-22 stamp. If you carry treated wood for consumer uses, .40 pcf is generally the preferred retention for inventory purposes. This retention allows for both above ground and in-ground contact and keeps the lumber yards from having to carry two separate inventories.

.60 pcfThis retention is required for all structural members in ground contact situations (for example: pole barn stock 6x6) and it is at this retention level that the All Weather Wood Foundation gains acceptance and approval under all model building codes. AWWF material requires an'AWPB-FDN (foundation) stamp and both lumber and plywood must be kiln dried after treatment to 1990 or less moisture content. Applicable grades of lumber are rigidly set by industry design manuals (APA-NFPA).

A word of caution: when you encounter a specification calling for AWWF material, pleasb contact a qualified wood treater to discuss your method of supply. It is very important to secure material of both the proper grade, moisture content, and penetration to avoid potential problems with your local building department. AWPB-FDN stamps are mandatory. LP -2 or LP -22 material is not acceptable for wood foundation projects.

Peneiration: It is here that the greatest education is needed. Penetration is the depth to which the preservative has physically entered the treated wood. Penetration can be checked visibly. Simply take a piece

The Merchant Magazlne EXPANDING MARKET
P.O. Box H197, Phoenlx, Arizono 85030

of 2" x 4" treated Douglas fir, cut it in half, and look at the ring of treatment these cut ends reveal. You should see penetration approaching one-half inch on a consistent basis around the piece. Not every piece will have this type of penetration, however. Random sampling should present a consistent pattern of properly treated wood.

An obvious conclusion you should draw from improperly treated wood is a significantly shorter service life due to early wood failure. You are entirely within your rights to contact the treater whose stamp is on your material if you do not see evidence of this type of penetration. Insist upon well treated wood. You cannot afford anything else, nor can your customer. Retention without proper penetration is meaningless.

Get involved in pressure treated wood. Develop the necessary information base with your treater so that you can effectively and properly sell treated wood. You are the final and most important link in any lumber

program that sells to the building industry and buying public. Cooperation and communication between your business and the wood treating industry is absolutely essential to ensure that treated wood products gain their rightful position in the marketplace. Take advantage of the available experience from personnel interested in you. You and your customers will be pleased with the

service, appearance and economy of properly pressure treated wood products.

Additional reference material may be obtained from any qualified wood preserving firm. Two district engineers of The American Wood Preservers Institute can help as well. They are located in Lake Oswego, Or., 503-684-l 600; and Burlingame, Ca.,415-6924958.

Low Maintenance Deck

Deck Wood is a new pressure treated wood product from J.H. Baxter & Co.

With proper installation, it reportedly provides a maintenance free service life for both above ground or in ground applications. The preservatives used in the pressure treating are leach resistant and prevent attack by insects and decay.

Deck Wood is recommended for all outdoor home projects such as fences, decks and retaining walls. It can be installed in hot, freezing or rainy weather.

For patio decking it is sold only in 2x4 and 2x6 high grade appearance lumber which can be painted or stained to match a color scheme or left natural to age to a driftwood grey.

Other materials required to complete a deck such as timbers and support posts are available in common framing grades, also Pressure treated.

Called the TubeWorks, it includes round and square tubes in three sizes (3/t" , l" and lV+") and two lengths (3'and 6').

The system consists of a basic connector with an integral post and additional posts that can be screwed on as needed.

Climate Control

The T30 automatic setback thermostat by Robert Shaw is a combination heating/cooling control that automatically raises and/or lowers temperatures on a single or dual cycle in a 24-hour period.

The reported advantages include installation with a screwdriver on 24-volt or millivolt systems, sealedin-glass switch which requires no leveling and a clock that operates on a NICAD battery (not for millivolt system).

KeeponTrucking

Particularly applicable to the retail lumber and building materials market is a new lift truck series, the XL from Hyster Co.

The 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 pound capacity internal combustion trucks are equipped with 4-cylinder, overhead valve engines, available in either gasoline or LPG configurations. A high precision leaf chain hydraulic pump drive eliminates the need for an external shaft or belt. The engine block extends below the crankshaft centerline for added strength with cushioned engine mounts to absorb power train vibration.

A diesel engine is available with indirect fuel injection, swirl-type combustion chamber and a gear-type hydraulic pump drive.

The series uses a single-speed powershift transmission. A high performance torque converter is matched to the engine and transmission for low-speed gradeclimbing or speed on long runs. A hydrostatic steer axle, reportedly a unique Hyster Co.,

providing "low hygroscopicity" (reduced moisture pickup) and low corrosivity of melals in contact with the treated wood, according to company spokesmen.

design, does away with many of the conventional steering components thus reducing service and adjustment.

Access to all components is designed to make servicing easier and eliminate down time.

Fire-Rated Roofing

A new fire-rated premium wood fiber roofing has been introduced by Masonite Corp.

Woodruf traditional flame test roofing (available in western states) and Woodruf rustic flame test roofing (available in central and southern states) have a Class C fire rating, as tested in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories Standard #790.

These are especially applicable to light commercial and multihousing construction and reroofing as well as residential applications.

The 12" x 48" pieces are larger than standard three tab shingles or wood shakes and reportedly require less nailing.

WWPA MEETING

wood market was a convention bright spot. A broad based introduction, it took the subject from brief reviews of the technical and specify-

C.

ing aspects, through current market conditions in the West and Midwest to a look at how the story on pressure treated wood is being told to consumers and industry. Craig Larsen, a member of the WWPA field staff, described pressure treating as the

"silver lining to the dark cloud hanging over the industry."

According to assistant secretary of Housing and Urban Development, G. Hunter "Pete" Bowers, who spoke at the annual Industry Luncheon, "There is a knowledgeable, concerned, caring, organized and working effort (in the Reagan administration) to respond to the terrible times facing the Western lumber industry. "

Bowers highlighted some of the ways the administration is attempting or has helped housing, including the freeing of pension fund money to be invested in mortgages and recognizing the need to develop strong secondary market sources for conventional mortgage lending. Bowers also cited efforts to reduce the cost of housing through the clearing of government red tape.

While the message f rom Washington was reassuring, the association's board of directors strongly urged the administration to provide a temporary stimulus to help housing production, while doing so with a minimum budgetary impact.

DEALERS ON P.T. WOOD

available and affordable, you don't have the demand for treated lumber that you do as you get further East." Last year pressure treated lumber was #l in his stores over the competitors.

Other dealers, however, claim that, grade for grade, treated wood looks as good to the buyers as redwood and claim price advantages for treated lumber over redwood as high as 5090.

That's fine for the consumer, but what about the lumber dealer? "Sales (of treated) have been helped by the decline in quality and availability of cedar and redwood," claims Rochon of Herr Lumber. Other dealers cite the fact that treated wood can be ordered in the lengths that are most profitable for the yard without their being required to take a lot of short lengths, helping their inventory control.

Also, a lot of "that green wood" isn't green anymore. Many manufacturers areusing preservative chemicals and pressure treating techniques that lead to a lumber product that looks like natural wood in color, while offering the durability and price advantages of pressure treated wood. Seattle's Powers says the new color helps "because it looks more like what people expect or want.tt

Dealers also indicate that ordering better grades of treated wood helps - selling #l or f2 where appropriate for use in decks and like projects. This can lead to a high level of customer satisfaction and repeat business.

Finally, dealers say that the same techniques work in the store for selling pressure treated wood-deck clinics, helpful, informative sales people, literature-that work for selling other lumber. And, happily, dealers agree that customers are becoming more aware of pressure treated wood and its many advantages.

Once available only in a brownishgreen color, pressure treated wood now comes in different shades of colors and huesbrown through light green to an almost neutral color. Some suppliers now offer pre-stained wood as well as more varieties and improved colors than were once offered.

Although the wood is available in two levels of treatment, ground contact and above ground use, some dealers are ordering all ground contact material for uniform inventory control. This also provides their customers with an assured quality product.

These photos show a variety of projects, using treated wood. Always an economical, durable choice for outdoor building, it is, as you can see, a versatile and beautiful choice too!

NOT FORSALE

I read with interest and concern an item in your February, 1982 issue that International Paper Company was still seeking buyers for its Gardiner and Vaughn, Or., and Weed, Ca., mills.

Since announcements on IP's Western Region facilities are disseminated from

my office, I can assure you there has been no official announcement of the company's intention to sell its Gardiner, Or., facilities. Gardiner is not for sale. If you have an official announcement to this effect, I would be very interested in seeing it. Further, the publication of such an announcement has caused upset and concern among part of your readership who happen to be employees ofthe company.
