Redwood Pork Fqcts

\[/HEN THE Congress begins hearings this month

YY on the desirability of establishing a national redwood park, there is one thing you can be sure will result. A torrent of misinformation. For if there is one really outstanding thing about the continuing controversy surrounding the pa.rk question, it is the high degree of inaccuracy in the information put forth by most of the conservationist groups.

Unfortunately, their distortions and non-facts have been picked up and repeated and reprinted as gosp"l by many of the magazines, newspapers, television arld rafio stations that should know betber.

To edd to the problern, the lumber industry until recendy had not presented its arguments in one clear, calm and well-thought out package that could be easily and quickly digested and understood by everyone. The industry had put out a mass of information, tho none filled that description.

But now the National Forest Products Association has put out a srnall booklet called Redwood Park Facts that does the job of simply and quickly ex. plaining the industries poeition.

The following, quoted from part of their booklet, is an excellent statement of the facts:

"Wty do proponents want a national redwood park?

While it is hard to pin down the proponents, there are Iour reasong given at one time or another, They are:

(l) To preserve additional old growth redwood treee to see and admire. This is the rnajor reason usually given.

(2) To secure additional watershed lands to protect the old growth redwoods now in parks at lower elevations.

(3) To secure additional lands for general recreation purposes.

(4) To give national recognition to the coast redwoodg. The Sequoia gigantea redwoods are alreedy in a national park.

"Facts do not justify government acquisition o{ more old growth redwoods to see and admire.

(1) Most of the remaining redwood groves oI park.like quality are already set aside in thirty state parks. Most of the redwoods outside state parks are truly commercial timber and not parkJike.

(2) The redwoods in state parks are more than ample to satisfy public vierring requirements lor all time.

Over 115,000 acres are in state parks located along U.S. Hwy. l0l for over 300 miles. Industry is holding another 6,400 acres of parkJike groves awaiting public acquisition.

Public need for redwood park area is fully met now even though less than Uo of the redwood area now in parks has been dweloped.

Spending $S0-$200 million for the purchase of addi' tional unneedod redwoods in remote northern Cali' fornia would be a cruel hoax on the tax.paying pub' lic. The real need is to develop recreational facilities on lands already in public ownership.

"Acquisition of "watershed" laud and timber is not needed to protect redwod now in parks.

(1) Soil studies clearly establish the Mill Creek water' shed (included in the Administration's proposal) poses no threat to redwoods in the Jedediah Smith State Park nearby.

(2) Redwood Creek (the area included in the Sierra Club's proposal) doesn't even flow into or through redwoods now in state parks.

(3) In any event, experts believe the megnifrcent redwood groves on alluvial flats (now in state parlc) actually thrive on any flooding which does occurother competing snaller species are killed ofr and the redwoods put out new root systems at highor levels on their trunks as silt gathers around them.

Acquisition of additional large redwood parks to provide general outdoor recreation c&nnot be justified.

(I) Dense old growth redwood groves are not desirable for camping and picnicking because they are dark, damp and dangerous.

(2) The public already owns almost one and a half million acres of {orest land in northern coastal California which could be used for general outdoor r@reation if needed.

(3) Industry has voluntarily opened up 365,000 acres of private forest land in north coastal California.

(4) As for the State of California as a wholg the nine million acres oI puhlic land are specifically committed to recreation.

(5) The big need in the United States is for development of recreation facilities particularly near population centers.

"If the nation wants to establish a redwood national park to give the redwoods national status, the obvious solution is to convert one or more existing outstanding state parks into national parks."

Bellwood spells it like it is...

*P is for P-R-E-F-I-N-I-S-H-E-D

Why is it that jobbers and dealers everywhere are moving as much as a carload a weekof Bellwood doors pre-finished right here at Bellwood? Because for quality priming and pre-finishing our cost is so low no one can honestly afford to pre-finish on the job any more. Also, there's 50% more profit for you in selling a pre-finished door that takes no more of your storage space than a raw one. And, too, our extensive fine of standard finishes is immediately available. In addition, because Bellwood stands behind every pre-finished door with a guarantee, any replacement haggling is eliminated.

lf you can think of further reasons, they're probably why these days, more than ever, P for Pre-finished spells BELLWOOD.

clubs, we would like to agree with Oakland Hoo-Hoo Club prexy Jack Koep{ that their big turnout might be a harb. inger of better things to come for the venerable East Bay club.

The Oakland club, incidentally, is still the California champ as far as attendance at a single meeting goes, The record was set eight years ago at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley with better than 700 lumbermen attendine the annual Reveille.

WWPA looks forward'to upward trend

]\TEW HOUSING starts will revitalize the 1\ .ugging lumber market in the next decade with emphasis on multiple'family dwellings.

Wendell B. Barnes, executive vice pre' sident of the Western Wood Products Asso' ciation, said that the nation's leading con' struction economists have predicted new housing starts will average 1.7 million in the 1965-70 period and step'up to about 2 million in l97I-75. Barnes said most of this volume will be in multi-family units which use an average of 4,000 bf. each.

Barnes made his remarks in the final meeting of the membership of WWPA at its 4-day third annual meeting in San Francisco. Work sessions and tJre general meeting were attended by more than 600 lumbermen of the 12 Western states. Member firms of WWPA, largest trade asso' ciation of its kind in the nation, in 1966 produced 29 percent of softwood lumber manufactured in the United States.

Barnes said that the WWPA market research department has just completed a survey of the nation's major lending institutions.

o'Their study confirms the general building and financial industry expecta' tions that mortage funds will be in better supply this year than last. Most institu' tions surveyed indicated willingness to finance an increased volume of home re' pair and remodeling."

Other major association business was the reelection of L. L. Stewart as WWPA president. He is also president of the Bohemia Lumber Company, Inc. in Culp Creek, Oregon.

Frank R. Gilchrist was reelected vice president and James H. Whitty, treasurer. Gilchrist is president of the Gilchrist Tim-

Barnes was reelected to his post as executive vice president. G. Cleve Edgett was reelected as vice president. The membership elevated H. A. Roberts from secretary to vice president and Gordon J. Brown from comptroller to secretary. All four are residents of Portland, Oregon, where thtt association headquarters.

At work sessions, the association cryst' allized its opposition to a California pro' posal to prevent counties to tax eontracts for cutting timber on public lands. Lum' bermen expressed concern that success of a measure in California will lead to appli cations elsewhere. Success in the proposal, now subject to review by the California Attorney General, not only would place a serious burden upon timber operators, but also raise the threat of federal le' sislative review which could have disast' ious effects on bonds for county roads and schools. Both are now heavily supported by funds allocated from federal timberland receipts.

Gene Brewer, president of the National Forest Products Association and of U.S. Plywood-Champion Paper, Inc., told mem' bers that purposeful strides are being taken toward cooperative efiorts among the na' tion's forest products industry associations.

'oThere is a place in our industry today for bold strokes," said Brewer. o'We must regroup our strength and achieve a solid program without regard for historical procedures."

As an example, Brewer said the Wood Marketing [nc., a national, joint promo. tion group has asked for advice from wood producers and has urged merger of technical, marketing, advertising and pro. motion functions. He noted that top level, inter-association unity is being sought in a number of fields by the Economic Council, a new forest industry strategic planning group. The council has brought together leaders of the industry to con. sider long-range cooperative efiorts.

Another stride for forest industry co. operation was taken during the WWPA annual meeting when representatives of 12 major manufacturers' associations watched the first, coordinated, nationwide program in the history of the in. dustry. Lumber, plywood, millwork and shingle manufacturers from the U.S. and Canada, calling themselves the Coopera. tive Committee of the Forest Products Promotion Council, agreed on several joint programs in 1967. Included are national consumer advertising campaigns, trade advertising, consolidated exhibit space at the National Home Builders Show and other national publicity efforts.

In other actiono the association recog. nized imaginative industry leadership and planned beautification, stimulating community pride, with an award to the U. S. Plywood-Champion Paper, Inc. for planned improvements at Anderson, California.

L. L. Stewart, WWPA president, made the award, second of its kind made by the WWPA.

Should you change your business and go consumer?

TN THESE times, lives there a lumber or r building materials business owner who hasn't asked himself, ools there something I should be doing to bolster up my business?"

One often proposed panacea is "Go after the consumer trade."

The dealers who leap at the do-it-yourself market without adequate advance preparation are in for serious trouble. Just hanging out the shingle welcoming the man on the street is not enough.

In some cases, old line lumber yards have successfully turned their backs on the contractor business and have become general merchandisedepartment stores. Although potentially very lucrative, huge investrnents in new buildings, additional merchandise, and aggressive advertising and promotion limit this course to a handful of operators.

What can the average materials dealer do now to alter the odds in his favor? How does he determine his chances for success? How much should he spend? Can he budget in advance how much he can expect to get back in protit and how long will it take to attract etwugh new consumer business?

avoid the crime of indecision. The merchant who will be in the most trouble is the one who does not know which way to go and so €loes nowhere and does nothing. Even a wrong decision is many times bettel than making no decision at all. An improper decision can always be reversed or changed.,. but indecision is like an undetected disease.

No one can expect guaranteed answers for these questions, but there are some steps every dealer can take today to help him make the best possible decision at the rieht time.

betermining whether to "Go Consumer" involves five steps:

(l) Getting the facts.

(2) Making THE Decision.

(3) Specific Planning and Budgeting.

(4) Going into Action.

(5) Directing the Operation.

In this article we'll attempt to discover what facts are needed. where the tacts are available, and what to do with them.

Of course. as a management consultant, I believe that major decisions -quch as this should have the assistance and perspective of outside advice from the very bcginning. Rut there ale man)i steps the owner can take for himself, using the tools at his disposal which will aid in better decision-making.

First. have a mcetins with vour t.mplol'ees and tlre principals o[ you, company. Tell them what you are thinking oi and ask for their suggestions, Have someone make notes of what is said. Do not debunk any id,eas proposed,. Keep in mind that older, closely knit organiza. tions have a tendency to throttle new ideas and sup{eestions by years of turndown. When business is good, no one u-ants to rock the boat. \ow. listen to

any ideas, no matter how far-fetched. You don't have to adopt it. . but you owe it to yourself to listen.

Next, invite your suppliers and the salesmen who call on you to each come into your inner sanctum {or a lS-minute chat. Tell them what you are considering

and ask for their suggestions. Ask how the competition is doing. Make notes o{ their ideas, but remember that they are prejudiced too. Don't commit to anything. put down in a single notebook all the recommendations without attempting to evaluate.

Then it's time to take a good. hard look at your busint ss operation. How many things do you do just "because that's how we've always done it ?" I)o you have the right products, right prices, right quantities? Do you make a/l thc decisions? Do you havc frcquent financial reports that tell you something? O{ course rve all have accountants to keep clean with the Government. How does your inventory compare with last year ? I-ast month? Does it turn at least twice in a year?

Prepare a good financial statement profit and loss and balance sheet. . and an,qwer the questions in The MERCHANT Magazine's "Do-it-Yourself Check List.o' You may not be able to get this in{ormation for yourself in a reasonable length of time so you may have to ask for out-

side help in getting a good survey and analysis of your special market.

An adequate market survey will answer the following questions:

(l) How big is the market in my service area?

(2) What should my share be?

(3) How much am I getting now?

(4) What do my potential customers want to buy?

(5) When do they do this buying?

(6) Where do they buy now?

(7) How is the competition doing?

(B) Would buyers come to my store if they knew of it?

(9)What will I have to do to entice them to my store?

(10) Is it worth it? (Will it be profitable? )

Finally, take your financial statement, your market survey, and a written statement of your preliminary plan to your' banker and sit down with him. You're not there to ask for money or even to make a decision yet, but his advice is worth two-to-one the advice you'll get from anyone else.

Ask your banker this way, "If I were 35 and came in for the first time to borrow money, would you make this loan for this amount, as o{ now?" Add his answer to your collection of facts.

Add your comments of your interview with your banker to your decision-making notebook. Go over all your notes that evening and set it all aside for a couple o{ days.

Now you're ready for the agonizing efiort of makine the ilecision. Next issue we'll evaluate the facts you've gathered and give some rules of thumb that will help vou make your decision.

SMOOTH SELL'NG

CI.OSING THE SALE

The art of closing the sale can be oompared to the approach of a shy suitor.

He wants to marry his girl and she is more tlan ready to accept his pro-

' Here the analogy ends. A woman can steer the conversation back on the main track or, in some other way, make it easy for him to ask for her hand.

A prospect, however, usually offers 'l no such help and often the order is lost ft. because the salesman simply didn't ':i know how to close.

Even while a buyer is offering objec. tions, he still may be psychologically ready to give an order. All he needs is assurance from you that he is making the right decision.

The buyer is not infallible. He only

acts that wav sometimes. He has his , self doubtq fears and apprehensions

' like anyone else. In addition, he is bur-

.dened with tremendous responsirbility.

Very often it is up to you to direct his

thinking into proper buying channels.

How is this done? By always being on

tbe offensive. Beat back objections with

.strong counter arguments until the pros;.,,. pect has exhausted his reasons for not il1,. , buying. Then move in quickly and close i.,r'r: .the sale.

Exculel or Obleclions

If you made a list of all the types of sales arguments you get, you'd find that most of them are excuses, not objections. No professional salesman should be discouraged by such statements ds:

We're bound up with other producers.

We are reducing our inventory.

Tile're buying ito- too many different firms now.

We're waiting until business conditions pick up.

Your product is like one we are already using.

These are such obvious excuses that the prospect may as well be wearing a sigrr to that effect. Still these excuses can sink you if they go unchallenged.

Turn these negative replies into positive selling points.

Excuses like the above can be knocked over like tenpins by the salesman who is agile of mind and has a strong belief in the superiority of his company and his merchandise.

Self €onf,dencc

The ability to close a sale with ease and precision comes largely from having confidence in yourself.

When is the right moment to close the sale? It's hard to find agreement on this question. Some veteran salesmen claim there is only one psychological moment and if that is missed, the order is lost. Others assert there are various times during an interview when the sale can be closed. The important thing to remember, they note, is that the salesman must take advantage of his opportunity. Like a halfback, he must scamper through the opening made for him.

Both these points of view are right. On some calls there is only one propitious moment to drive home the sale. This cannot be explained by logic. The one-chance closing may occur only once in every 20 interviews. The other nineteen may offer several opportunities for closing. In any case? always seize your opportunity.

Pressure Poinf

There is nothing wrong in using a little pressure if it brings results. Often it does.

Many prospects are bored by the soft sell and will welcome a figurative boot in the pants to help them make up their minds. Buyers often toss in objections, not out of conviction. but as a means of obscuring their own doubts and indecision. They're on the fence and wait. ing for someone to knock them off.

Know your man before you apply pressure. Some prospects may resent it. But if a buyer seems to be wavering, make up his mind for him. Such an interview might go like this:

Prospect: o'I don't think I'm ready to buy right noriv."

Salesman: "Mr. Smith, I think you're as ready as you'll ever be. [f there is

lffS fpR YOUR SALESMEN .. each artlcle ln thls series ls ex- to approxlmately 2fi)O words-lncludes a self-evaluation quiz- ted ln 2 colors ln a 4 page format, on whlte glossy paper and ls Duacbed to flt any standard 3-rlng blnder prlces are as fol-

still something you're in doubt about, name it and I'll clear it up. Otherwise, why don't we get this thing over with?" or:

Prospect: ooYour company is a Iittle high in price."

Salesman: o'If that's all that's worrying you, you may as well sign right now. Our prices are competitive and you won't do lbetter anywhere in the industry."

Don't, under any circumstances, lie to get an order. Don't tell a prospect that prices are going up when they're not as a means of scaring him into placing an order.

Don't tell him that your product is in short supply when it isn't. These tactics will invariably boomerang on you.

Oblectionr Aro Stondardlzed

A new objection is as unlikely as a snowstorm in July. The same excuses and stalls keep popping up on call after call. The prospect who is too busy to talk, overstocked or satisfied with his present supplier is a familiar figure to the experienced salesman.

Make a list of these stock objections so you can counter them each time they come up. In this way you will close more sales in less time.

Selling is like a game of chess. The more often you can counter your op. ponent's move, the quicker victory is yours.

Don't sidestep a serious objection, however. Meet it squarely and try to satisfy the prospect. Once you do, slop talhing about this query. That's the time to close the sale. Many sales have been kicked away because the salesman talked past the psychological moment for closing. Ciue the ,nan a chnnce to buy.

Now let's check your closing tech. nique. If you can answer ttyes" to seven of these questions you're closing with success.

Allan Potash Mines insured themselves with the best protection when they built their new potash storage building near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. They specified Non-Com Protected Lumber and Plywood for all joists and decking. Non-Com was installed to give optimum resistance to corrosion and fire. Non-Com treated joists and plywood were used with structural supports of untreated laminated wood beams to achieve an "all wood" structure which will fight the corrosive attack of ootash. Resistance to corrosion will mean extra years of dependable, low-maintenance service for this building...the largest bulk storage facility of its kind in Canada.

Housing Boom Now Sure Thing

William H. Hunt, executive vice president of Georgia. Pacific has predicted that a new U. S. home construction boom, already starting after months of depression, will reach record levels by the end of this year and should set new records start. ing in 1968.

Speaking before the Portland Chamber of Commerce, he said demand will result in 1.3 to 1.4 million new units tlis year despite a slow start. He predicted an adjusted annual rate of 1.8 million by year-end with a sustained level of over 2 million annually beginning in 1968. Good preivous years have been at the I.5 million level.

to more and more California dealers and distributors. For year around supplies of dimension lumber and precision-trimmed studs, depend on D & R and these 4 Oregon and Washington mills:

Hemlock Studs from Warrenton Lumber Co., Warrenton, Oregon

Hemlock Dimension from Westport Lumber Co., Westport, Oregon

Douglas Fir Studs from Shepherd & Dasher Lumber Co,, Longview, Wash,

The new boom o'can be even greater, filling demand for up to 2.6 million units a year if all those involved accept the challenge," he said.

Sustained government policies that allow the industry to fill housing needs, elimination of "cracker box" construction, more remodeling of good older homes for low-cost housing, and im. proved design, construction methods, materials, merchandising and research.

Dealer Business Booster

f)ICOCNITION of fire-retardant wood

f\ u. a real business booster for dealers is showing up in increased sales across the country. EIIorts on the part of J. H. Baxter & Company, pioneers of many lumber preservative treatments, have resulted in official recosnition for the fire-retardant properties of chemically pressure'treated lumber. Building code changes have b,een cffected and new doors have been opened to the use of rvood for many construction projects formerly limited to metal and concrete.

Extrn crofit and extra business for deal' er-s are .ho*ing up. The Hammond Lum' ber Co. of Pasadena, Calif. recently supplied 50,000 bf. o{ Pyresote to Emio Tomeoni. contractor for the Argosy Apartments in Pasadena. Tomeoni used Pyresoted studs for all interior partition walls in the Type II concrete lift-slab apartment house. Previously, the use of the studs had ,been restricted to southern California schools, public buildings and FHA condominiums.

Ihe combination of the lift-slab constnrcticn and the use of Pyresoted studs put them way ahead of schedule. Labor time was reduced to one-third by following the customary technique used in framing Type V wood buildings. The easy to work rvith studs were end-nailed through the Pyresote wood sills and plates laid horizontally on the concrete floor. The assembled walls were then raised and set in place with concrete nails gun-driven through the sill and top plate.

Interior rvalls would have been built of concrete had it not been for Pyresote treated lumber. Dealers are finding that money and time saving installations such as this have stimulated buyer interest and increased sales of the treated wood.

Hordwqre Show Sets Record

The 18th annual Western States Hardware-Housewares-Paint & Garden Supply Show held in San Francis:o, set new buying and attendance records. Buyers from throughout the West caused sales to jump 17.4 percent over the 1966 show, to a total o{ 8250,062.

Exhibitors we re on hand in increased numbers for the February show due partly to the tragic Chicago housewares show fire which prevented many buyers from {illing their inventories. Booth space was up l1 percent over 1966, making this tlre biggest show of its kind outside of New York.

Judging from the amount of volume buying, the retail bu. siness is obviously optimistic over the remainder oI 1967.

The natural charm oI Redwood

No forest products are more prized for both beauty and performance than those made from redwood. Nature endowed redwood with a rich, warm elegance to which she added durability, dimensional stability, weather resistance and superior insulation against heat, cold and noise.

Redwood is the only species of wood that if left unfinished will weather gracefully, or it may be stained, painted, or bleached to any hue or color. In fire resistance, "the absence of resins and gums in redwood makes it a fire-resistant wood," according to U.S. Dept. of Commerce Bulletin #171. And, in thermal insulation, s/s" of redwood is the equivalent of 3.6" of brick, 9.4" of stucco, and 8.6" of concrete. Now a new dimension has been added to this remarkable building material

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood, a completely new product, is now available in a wide variety of attractive patterns and two distinctive textures.

PALCO has combined all of the natural attributes of redwood with the extra strength, economy and advantages of large plywood panels to produce PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood. These combine to make quality sidings for any exterior. For interiors, the rich hue, the grain and textures of PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood add charm to any room.

In a choice ol textutes and pattetns

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood manufactured to the same high panels are standards of quality

and uniformity as PALCO redwood lumberto the most exacting specifications'

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is available

Clear Heart Saw-Textured-The PALCO premium grade-a rough-sawn texture, appropriate to both contemporary or conventional design for exteriors and interiors. Clear All Heart Redwood, knot free-preferred for its beauty and durabilityis used in the textured face veneers.

A-Clear Brush-Textured-Wire-brushed to accent the natural rich tones of redwood grain. Face veneers are clear, knot-free; include some sapwood. Recommended particularly for interiors.

Select Saw-Textured-A rough-sawn panel combining the beauty of redwood with the economy of face veneers that include sapwood and filled knot holes.

The beauty of the textured redwood is further enhanced by combining texture with line through the use of grooved patterns. The parallel grooves create striking effects of highlight and shadow. Each of the above three grades are available with Texture 1:1 1 grooves, 3/8" wide and th" deep, spaced 4",8" , ol 4" and 12" , and also in the popular f nverted Batten pattern in which grooves V+" deep by 1t/2" wide are spaced 12".

The two Saw-Textured grades are offered with plain ungrooved faces, and matching Palco redwood lumber battens are available.

All PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is exterior-type, bonded with waterproof adhesives.

Clear Heart and Select grades have a factory-applied exterior water repellent, providing the ideal surface for natural weathering, staining, painting, or bleaching.

PALCO Redwood Plywood is manufactured to specifications of U. S. Product Standard P.S. 1-66, of American Plywood Association's 303 Specialty Sidings, and complies with F.H.A. standards. Each piece bears the new California Redwood Association stamp of approval and the D.F.P.A. grade trademark.

For Exteriors

The variety of textures, panels, and grades provide quality exteriors for all types of construction-from the most expensive custom homes, to vacation cottages. ldeal also for commercial buildings where beauty of wood and ease of maintenance is required. Saw-textured panels will hold finishes up to twice as long as smooth surfaces, while masking abrasions and scratches.

PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywoods serve as both sheathing and siding, without necessity of corner bracing. Apply 3/a" or 5/a" grooved panels direct to 16,, o.c. studs-ungrooved 5/e" panels to 24,, o.c. studs. ff sheathing is used, supports may be spaced 24,, o.c. Place panel edges over studs or solid blocking.

Gap square-edge panels Va" and caulk or cover with battens. Caulking not necessary at shiplapped edges. For exteriors, the use of corrosion-resistant nails is especially important; use stainless, aluminum, or hot-dipped galvanized. For 3/e" panels, 6d siding or casing nails are recommended; 8d for 5/a,, panels. Space nails 6" at panel edges and 12,, on intermediate studs. Drive flush but do not set. Colored corrosionresistant nails are available at many lumber and building material dealers.

The above general recommendations are in accordance with the A.P.A. and comply with the F.H.A., the major regional building codes, and most local codes. PALCO Redwood lumber battens 2V2,, wide,8,,g, and 10'lengths are available in either lYgz', or2/tt, lhicknesses with a saw-textured face and water-repellent treated.

For Interiors

For interior applications, PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood is winning wide approval among architects and designers. Patterns and textures impossible to obtain with thin hardwood veneers are available in PALCO-PLY Redwood Plywood at a cost much less than that of hardwood panels.

Saw-textured surfaces provide a soft, pleasing texture and tend to conceal scratches and scuff marks. Brush-textured faces accent the redwood grain. The brushing action creates highlights of color and pattern and imparts a hardening to the surface.

p)RESIDENTS of the United States are perhaps the most-quoted ! men in all history, as well they should be for the influence they exert. Often times their words fall on deaf ears, but tfren again, sometimes their uttered beliefs cause man to move in a direction of benefit to his fellow man.

WEtl..llESERYE0 pra is e forthe movers andshakers from Bob McBrien, as he thanks them for a good job.

It's just such a saying by Theodore Roosevelt that comes to mind as I look upon a list of our outgoing officers, ex@utive eommitteemen, board members and committee chbirmen. Tq quote Roosevelt: "Every man owes a part of his time and money to the development of tlle industry in which he is *engaged." *

I feel most certain that whether our out-

going leaders have ever seen this quote or not, they share these sentiments. These men have contibuted countless hours to making their industry a better one for all. Ofiten they put themselves completely in the background in order to make decisions that would enhance the future of others.

Not too often, I believe, do we really take the time to appraise the unselfish efiorts of LMA officers, directors and other leaders. Thee men give of both their time and money . many times for dealers who unfortunately take little active part in promoting their industry. Ye! the leaders well realize that the job must be done and they go about doing it in their individual quiet way.

As I write this column many thoughts rush to mind-thoughts and ideas expressed by President Homer Hayward, Vice President Art Masters and otler LMA leaders who have not bee,n content to be named to an ofroe only to rbask in the glory of the ofrce. These men have generated new thinhing among building materials dealers-thinking that has produced new programs, that has helped to change business direction, that has opened new doors to| areas of mutual interest among manufacturers, wholesalers, suppliers and others.

None of us lives in a vacuum, although it is mo6t easy to create one if we set our mind to it. We can stew in our own juice, or we can take a new loolc, a progressive look and then get with it. Those who do, those who participate in LMA, thoee who give of their time and talents to help their industry-they are moving ahead. Those who contemplate only what immediately surrounds themthoy are dying whether they realize it*or not.

All of you know,my feelings about LMA and its value to all dealers, but again I believe a President has stated it in a most memorable way. To quote Herbert Hoover: o'They (trade associations) are tle safe guards of small business, and thus prevent the extinction of competition. With wisdom and devotion, their vduntary fo_rces can aceomplish more for our country than any spread of the hand of gwrlrnment." r r

This I believe . as do the many men who have labored so hard and long for LMA and its causes. My hat is ofi to our out going leeders! Thsnks to each of you for a great job well done.

VIETNAM LETTER

The Merchant Dear Dave,

Can you imagine standing a half a mile away down wind and smelling Pile Burrr, It's a fact. Last May, about 20 miles north of Qui Nhon in So. Vietnam, a military storage depot gave off this smell.

A pile of lumber 6 lifts high and about 150 yards long, solid unit piled, and everything frorn 1x4 to 6x12 in this line. No order, no segregation, all lengths in the 100 degree heat and 99 humidity. In a month this lumber was worthless.

The lumber the U.S. sent in that big rush a year ago was treated and handled like so much dunnage coming out the end of a mill while cutting cull logs. In fact, lumber was a cornmodity that was at the bottom of the priority list. Hair spray for the ladies was top, with communications and med ic al supplies next.

Ths method they used in hauling what they did need would make any transportation man commit suicide.

A few loads I saw went out the conventional way, units on trucks, but the majority went via dump truck (piled like hay) or on the backs of people, bicycle and motor scooters. The only method of transportation not used was horse and wagon. The reason is that the only horses in Vietnam were race horses in Saigon.

The labor for handling lumber

was really the worst of all. Three Vietnamese to one sheet of V+" 4x8 plywood, or two men to a 2x4 t2" long. I will admit for what money they get I couldn't blame them too much and I never saw any one who weighed over a 100 lbs. "soaking wet." What a race of people for jockeys !

The country itself has a great potential to produce its own lumber. But who wants to run a sawmill when you have that kind of help. It would take 200 men on the green chain alone for a 20M saw mill. There is teak, mahogany and other species I am not familiar with, But again there is a transportation

problem, roads to be built and get rid of "Charlie." The prime stands are in his hands.

Uses of the lumber were mainly limited to tent platforms, temporary housing and warehouse units on military reservations. The permanent buildings, native and otherwise were made of precast concrete. In other words don't look for a market there when and if this "war" is ever over.

So if you want to saw lumber and own a saw mill, fight dissase, dirt, poverty, ignorance and maybe "Charlie" go to Vietnam. I was there.
