I think most of us aspire to be looked up to. and as we go through our careers there are people-inside or outside the industry-who inspire us with their knowledge, style. vision and leadership qualities. Those are the people you rvould do anything for because you feel a debt of gratitude for horv they have helped you.
Working as a consultant to a number of companies in past years, and even today working with a lot of companies across the country, often I hear the term "manager" bandied about. However, I rarely hear the term "leader." In my opinion, there is a real difference. To me what truly sets companies apart, are those that have leaders as opposed to managers.
As a test, look around at the people that you rvork rvith or
have rvorked with, to determine rvho you think is a real leader compared to who was a manager in title only. Then ask yourself rvhy. and rvhat made each different from one to the other. To be truthful. I am not sure how to specifically define rvhat makes a leader from one person to the next, but I do knorv that leadership demands changes in horv one acts compared to what traits rvere needed to get a leadership position in the first place. Many find the transition difficult.
Often. rvhen companies promote. the nerv manager is thrown into the deep end. often rvith no training as to rvhat bein-e a manager means. Too often new managers miss the point that they need to change horv they act. That is rvhy there are too many poor managers around and a lack of leaders.
Before being made a leader. it is all about you. What you did. your performance. your results. When you are a leader. it is no longer about your success. it is about the success of people rvorking directly for you. and giving them leadenhip to help make them the most successful they can be. It is about making your team-however large or small-stand out in the organization as productive. motivated. goals oriented. and rvorking in harmony to produce. beat results. and -eet the job done. The transition from contributor to leader is not an easy one. especially early in one's career.
Success is not about rvhat you do as an individual anymore. but horv your team succeeds.
In my past. I have rvorked for a couple of good leaders. but I have also rvorked for people rvho rvere managen in title only, rvho through their orvn fears and insecurities only worried about horv they could personally get credit and look good despite everyone else around them. They rvould even try to hold back their direct reports for fear of really being found out about their orvn performance. There were some rvho tried to micromanage every detail and gave no trust to their team, always rvanting to be seen as the savior.
Too many managers live in fear that having successful people under them rvill somehorv result in them losing their job. so they develop a style rvhere their hands are into everything. Indeed, quite the opposite is true. If your team is successful, you rvill not only get full attention from above. but also from many other companies. as leaders and leadership are in short supply.
I have seen people be made managers. rvho truly rvere a misfit. not because they tveren't good or successful in rvhat they did. but because they rvere betrer at doing than leading. I have long since learned that some top salespeople make poor managers. leaders. or trainers because they cannot undo the traits that have made them successful: rvorking aggressively for themselves and being lonen.
Congratulations if you have just been appointed to a management position for the first time-you have norv been promoted to a leader. It is because someone believes you have the ability to become the coach as opposed to the star of the team. That means you need to mentor. train. rvork together, and care passionately about the people rvorking for you.
You need to be there for them in good and bad, help them understand rvhat rvent gloriously right and rvhat did not. Help them through their mistakes. and be rvith them through the occasional failure. taking time to point out rvhat you like about their performance and what can be done in the future to take it to the next step. Energize them and give them optimism for the future. And. most of all. be candid rvith them. There is nothing worse than learnin-e the hard rvay (by termination. for example) that your performance has not been acceptable. Be truthful. and remember it is no longer about you. it is about them.
In the end. it's not rvhat you do. It's the wav lfter.do it!

The most popular grades of redwood for decks-Deck Heart and Deck Common-are readily available. Deck Heart and Deck Common are redwood grades developed specifically to meet the demands of the deck market. Deck Heart and Deck Common are available in 2x4 and 2x6 dimensions and have design values making them ideal for outdoor decking. The recommended span for redwood decking is 24 inches on center.
E Redwood's dimensional stability is the most important property when it comes to long-lasting, natural beauty. According to the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, redwood has less volumetric shrinkage than other common softwoods. In exterior use, this means redwood stays flat and
The site first went online in 1997, but was completely revamped in 2005. Sporting a new, clean look, it is easier for visitors to navigate and extra emphasis is placed on the most popular features and topics. Construction details for redwood decks and fences continue to be number one. From May through August 2005, visitors downloaded more than 100,000 copies of the CRA's Redwood Deck Construction booklet in PDF format.
In addition to planning projects, many visitors are looking for redwood merchants, and CRA obliges with the Redwood Locator. { Th"""', a low-maintenance option for redwood decks. With its dimensional stability and heartwood decay resistance, redwood lumber is one of few woods that can be left unfinished. This low-maintenance option results in a rustic, weathered appearance that's preferred in many parts of the country. As redwood weathers, natural color changes take place. The changes may occur over a period of years and vary from one climate to another. If desired, it's not difficult to bring back redwood's brighter colors. See the next point.

Simple surface stains from food and other elements are easier to remove from redwood than many composite decking products. Several commercial cleaners are available that remove discoloration and restore the bright colors of redwood. The advantage of using commercial products is that they are intended for a specific use and come

Redwood lumber comes from Sequoia sempemirens, also known as the Coast Redwood. It is one of trvo species of redwood found in California. Sequoia sempervirens is the fastest growing conifer (softwood species) in North America. A coast redwood can grow to be 130 ft. tall in just 30 years.

I Catrtornia Redwood Assocralronbasis. The major redwood lumber mills and landowners have completed independent third-party certification of their redwood forestlands. As a result, over I million acres, approximately 80Vo of redwood commercial forests, are certified under one of the two most widely recognized certification programs: the Forest Stewardship Council or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
On September 21, 2005 the California Building Standards Commission unanimously approved the State Fire Marshall's "Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Areas Building Standards."
The newly adopted standard allows Construction Common or better grade redwood decking to be used without restriction throughout California's fire-prone wildlands. The development of these standards was the culmination of two years of effort by representatives of building material manufacturers, home builders, fire-fighting agencies, and numerous other industry and state organizations in response to conflagrations such as the 2003 Cedar Fire in San Diego County.
The superior performance of redwood lumber under fire exposure has been known for decades. Recent testing by numerous laboratories in response to new standards for decks in California's wildlandurban interface has reaffirmed redwood's reputation as a fire-safe decking product. California Redwood Association's early work with the University of California Forest Products Laboratory helped
iU Redwood Inspection Service is the organization exclusively authorized by the American Lumber Standard Committee to formulate grading rules for redwood lumber. RIS trains graders for individual mill members, checks performance in accordance with ALSC regulations, and serves as an impartial arbiter in settling questions of product quality to establish test standards for decking products.
Redwood Association is the source for both technical and sales information for the redwood lumber industry. CRA has a large library of publications for landscape architects, builders and homeowners. CRA also provides sales tools for redwood lumber merchants.
The decking surface section of the new code states that if a decking material has a net peak heat release rate of 25 kWsq. ft. or less when tested in accordance with SFM 127A-4 "Deck Test Standard." and conforms to ASTM E-84 Class B flame spread it can be used in all fire hazard severity zones without restriction. Construction Common and better grade redwood meets both of these criteria without the need for costly fire retardant treatment. Other decking materials not meeting both of these criteria will not be allowed unless the exterior wall covering to which the deck is attached is constructed of non-combustible or ignition resistant material. Non-combustible decking (masonry and steel) or ignition resistant decking (fire retardant treated wood) are other options.
Tests on redwood decking conducted by the University of California Forest Products Laboratory, in addition to the more recent California Redwood Associationfunded tests conducted by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and the

Previous tests on 1" nominal thickness redwood heartwood have resulted in the current Class B flame spread rating. New tests conducted by the Southwest Research Institute Department of Fire Technology. have verified the Class B flamespread rating for 2" nominal Construction Common and Construction Heart grades of redwood decking.
The new Chapter 7A, entitled: "Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure" will be incorporated into the California State Building Code. Implementation of Chapter 7A is expected to occur once the mapping of fire hazard severity zones has been completed by the CDF in 2008. While full implementation of the new code will not occur until January 2008, suppliers and users of redwood decking can rest assured that redwood decking can be used safely and without restriction through all areas of California.

However, rvith an overwhelming number of available materials. it can be tough to decipher fact from fiction when it comes to product features, performance and value.
One example of a versatile, quality material is western red cedar. With centuries of proven performance, the benefits of selling cedar are many: durability, environmentally friendly. versatility, beauty, etc. Yet many
individuals may not fully understand the porver of using a quality material like rvestern red cedar to improve profitability and customer satisfaction.
So rvhat are the latest trends you should be arvare of rvhen suggesting value-adding buildin_e materials like western red cedar? Belorv are some key things to remember rvhen helpin-e your customers choose the proper material:
These days. many consumers are concerned rvith incorporating materials that are safer for the environment- and are rvillin-s to pay extra torvards this ideal. Knorvledse about this trend and horv western red cedar is one of the most environmentallyfriendly buildin-e products is paramount rvhen discussing this aspect rvith your customers.
When you compare the life cycle of cedar to that of other materials. the environmental benefits of cedar can't be matched. For starters, as the
rvorld's only renervable buildin-e material. rvood can not only be recycled. but re-eenerated as rvell. In fact. North America has more forestland now than it did one hundred )'ears ago. Other resources that contain plastic. steel or cement use up natural resources that can't be replaced.
In addition. althou-eh rvood products make up 47% of all ras' materials manufactured in the U.S.. their share of manuflacturing energy consumption is only four percent. Steel for example. requires 2l times the energy to produce and releases more than fifteen times the amount of sulfur dioxide rvhen compared to rvood.
Grorvn rvithin natural forests to preserve native ecosystems. western red cedar trees provide habitat and therefore the opportunity for the lar-eest number of species to live throu_ehout the landscape. Using more cedar trees-both as a substitute for non-renervable fossil fuels and materials such as steel. concrete and plastic-provides the added benefit of pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and reducin,s the amount of greenhouse emissions.
Better yet. western red cedar is entirely biodegradable. and at the end of its life cycle. can be absorbed by the earth rvithout negative impact. Some alternative products can sit in landfills for years and years rvithout
breaking down-making western red cedar ultimately more earth friendly.
There's a reason why western red cedar is found on some of the oldest homes in North America. All the advances in technology have not been able to duplicate wood's unique characteristics and performance capabilities. For hundreds of years, builders have relied on cedar to offer longterm performance. Western red cedar has a natural resistance to decay and insects, meaning projects made with cedar will perform outdoors without the need for toxic chemical treatments. And when you consider the wide range of styles and grades available, cedar provides financial flexibility unmatched by alternative products.
In addition, advancements in cedar manufacturing mean consumers can spend time relaxing and enjoying their homes, rather then maintaining them. Today, many manufacturers offer western red cedar siding pre-finished on all sides. This finishing technology is important as it ensures the highest level of quality, thus greatly increasing consistent coating, longevity, and overall resistance to moisture.
This allows a builder or subcontractor to choose the preferred finishing color and simply install. Properly finished and installed. western red cedar will offer decades of low maintenance protection.
The same is true of cedar decking. One of the biggest misconceptions about decking products is regarding the necessary amount of maintenance. Most consumers may believe that once installed, plastic or composite decking need never be touched again. Regardless of the material, all decks require some annual maintenance to remain looking their best. And unlike composites or other man-made materials, cedar can easily be restored to its original condition-an important benefit that's often overlooked.
Cedar provides an all-natural beauty that can't be duplicated by plastic or composite materials. A range of natural hues, tight grain-patterns and soft textures continue to make western red cedar the building material of choice. And with cedar. customers aren't limited to the styles or material shapes set at the factory. From decking to siding, paneling to landscape
structures, cedar is easy to work with, shape and finish. The wide variety of grades and styles means cedar can provide a building material solution where other materials may fall short.
This all-natural beauty has also made cedar the focus of one of the hottest trends in residential construction. Specifically, incorporating materials and designs embracing the natural environment. The ability of cedar to blend seamlessly with surrounding stone, woodwork or landscape features has made cedar increasingly popular with architects and builders looking to create unique homes of distinction. Despite the wide variety of building material choices available todayin many cases, Mother Nature still knows best.
Knowing the issues, explaining the true value of building materials and discussing the correct information is paramount to establishing a strong relationship with your customers. To learn more about the virtues of cedar, the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association has developed a collection of brochures about a variety of applications. To learn more, call (866) 788-9096 or visit www.realcedar.org.

a natural oil that provides resistance to insects and decay. Unlike western red cedar or redwood, however, cypress
does not bleed tannins.
Although technically a softwood, cypress is graded as a hardwood according to rules set by the National Hardwood Lumber Association's rules. It has needle-like leaves like a so{irwood, but the trees shed in the fall like hardwoods. Under the right conditions, cypress can live for hundreds of years, reaching a height of 150 ft. and a diameter of 12 ft. Second- and third-growth trees, however, are usually harvested before the the tree reaches this size.
After harvesting, cypress sprouts from the trunk and reaches lumber size in 35 to 40 years. Although cypress can grow from seed dropped from its cones or from planted seedlings, regeneration is the quickest way as long as lots of water and sunlight is available. With careful harvesting, cypress supplies are expected to keep up with rising demand across the country.
"Consumers want to buy solid wood, natural products like cypress that are responsibly harvested," said Phil West, Coastal Lumber Co., Weldon, N.C., and the new president of the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association. "We just have to get out and promote it."

quently overlooked. Manufacturers also benefit when an installed sales program is successful. In fact, some suppliers report as much as a ten-fold increase in sales when dealers offer their products installed.
of a successful installed sales program are the program managers, the owner's commitment to the program, and supplier support programs.
Our last article discussed the importance of the installed sales manager. Most installed programs being implemented by LBM dealers have the potential to exceed seven figures in sales and enjoy margins of 307c to 4OVo. With these profit possibilities, dealers should spend a good deal of time and energy selecting the proper installed manager. It's unlikely their installed program will generate profits without a full-time person accountable for the program's success.
Over the years, I've seen many programs make dramatic turnarounds when part-time or unqualified managers are replaced with one who's better qualified. Doing it right the first time will save time, money and a great deal of grief.
Another key component to the success of an installed sales program is the owner or top management. Many owners don't always exhibit the leadership skills necessary to make this new "service" successful. Dealers that introduce install sales by telling their staffs they are going to "try installed sales" display a non-committal attitude. The staff, realizing that management isn't fully committed, tends to ignore or discount the value of the
program. Management must display a "do or die" attitude in order to gamer employee support. The staff needs to understand why the program is important to the business, and to their collective futures.
They need to understand that this service provides their customers rvith tangible business solutions and is a great way to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Research and common sense point out that customers tend to buy more from businesses that add value. Installed sales programs meet that challenge.
It should be pointed out that installation is typically a bigger challenge than distribution or supply. In fact, the product is usually secondary to installed service. It is management's role to deliver this message in a clear and concise manner so there are no misunderstandings. Management shouldn't expect their employees to automatically embrace the concept.
The dealer usually has two choices. He or she can either take the time to properly sell the program up front or wait until the program has proven itself. The first approach takes several hours or days; the second takes trvo or three years. The choice is simple.
While competent management coupled with a qualified installed manager are obviously essential to the success of an installed sales program, the importance of supplier support is fre-
That being said, they should also be vierved as an active partner and should invest in the program's success by providing support services specific to installed sales. In addition to offering quality products, in-store displays, product training, and other merchandising materials, supplien should also assist rvith programs that specifically address challenges that builders wrestle with each and every day. The suppliers need to play a dynamic and active roll in any installed program. A true supplying partner offers valueadded programs that help with the profitable execution of the program.
There are many things a manufacturer or supplier can offer other than timely delivery of their products and should be an integral ingredient of a successful installed program. Installation training conducted in the field is probably one of the most sought after support services.
The staff also needs to understand horv the installation service addresses builders' challenges. They should also be able to articulate the benefits in their presentations. With the help of the supplier, the dealer's sales staff should be able focus their presentations on adding value and lowering costs instead of offering a lorv price.
Our next article rvill address very specific issues that builders struggle rvith and how your installed program can curtail or even eliminate them.

investment quickly.
The next step is to evaluate your lighting and appliances. rvhich can represent up to 2OVc of your energy bills. Accordin-e to the EPA. 5O% or more of the energy used to light American homes is rvasted due to obsolete equipment and inefficient use. Replace standard incandescent bulbs rvith compact fluorescents. rvhich consume less energy and last longer-and turn lights off rvhen they aren't in use. (It's a myth that srvitching a light off then back on uses more energy than leaving it on.)
If I make my home more energy efficient, how much can I realistically expect to save on my utility bills?
Saving energy has always been about lowering costs as much as it has protecting the environment. It started in the 1970s, when energy shortages and rising prices gave people an incentive to reduce their energy use-and it's the reason homes built today are, on average, lO}Va more energy efficient than homes built 30 years ago.
Now it's happening again. The U.S. EPA estimates that the average household spends $1,500 a year on energy. but says that number could increase by as much to 50Vo in the coming months. At the same time, experience has shown that basic improvements can
save homeorvners up to 30Vc on their energy bills.
About half of a home's energy is used for heating and cooling. so the first step should be to make sure that your home is properly sealed and insulated. If you choose to tackle the job yourself, bear in mind that doors and rvindorvs-rvhile they should be properly sealed-don't tend to be the rvorst offenders. Look for spaces around pipes. chimneys and rviring that penetrates the insulation. Weather-strip or insulate your attic hatch or door, and seal any holes (such as those for ducts or plumbing) that lead from the attic into the rest of the house.
You may also want to hire a professional energy auditor. rvho is trained to pinpoint leaks. With a few improvements. you should be able to recoup the
Energy Star appliances are a bigger investment. but they follorv strict standards for efficiency and save money in the long run. In 20(X. the Energy Star program saved about $10 billion rvorth of energy-rvhich is enough to power 24 million homes.
Aside from being relatively easy (the ideas above are just a ferv of many possibilities). energy efficiency is good for the environment. saves money. and rvill hopefully reduce the need to source natural gas and oil in parts ofthe rvorld that are politically unstable. If your home isn't as efficient as it could be. do something about it today. It makes sense.

Unable to cut enough timber to make payments on $700 million of financing, Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia. Ca.. lvants to sell 60.000 acres of mostly ranchland and Douglas fir forests.
"We do not want to sell off our core redrvood lands," said spokesperson Chuck Center. "They're the lifeblood of our company."
Pnlco president Robert Manne assured employees that "rve are not liquidating the company or its timberlands. This is not a massive sell-off. but rather part of our larger restructuring efforts."
"lt's kind of a procrastination strategy," said Matt Wirz, an editor at Debtwire. a distressed bond nervs service. "There's no doubt in anyone's mind that the company has to restructure itself. They can't cut enough trees to fund the bonds."
Founded more than 140 years ago, Palco rvas purchased in 1986 by financier Charles Hurrvitz. The company's redrvoods-the largest privately olvned groves of old trees-have been the focus of countless legal battles rvith regulators and environmen-
talists. PnI-co maintains that the millions spent on these battles-plus the resulting regulationshave depleted the company and caused mill closures and layoffs.
Meanrvhile. the company plans to finish planting 700.000 redrvood seedlings. "All this is part of Pelco's commitment to sustainable forestry practices." said Gregg Bratcher. regeneration forester for the company.
"ln order to be certified or recertified. rve have to do certain things." said Chris Manson. Pelco's manager of regional government relations. "One of these things is to make sure we are planting seedlings for trees that rve harvest."
The plantings are an annual event that cost the company an estimated $ I million. "All of PeLco's 220.000 acres are subject to some of the strictest environmental standards in the rvorld." said Bratcher. rvho noted that the company voluntarily plants more than required by state larv: five trees for every one cut.
Just trvo months after shuttine
dorvn. Pacific tng & Lumber is back in business on Gravina Island, Ak.
According to owner Steve Seley, the mill closed because he was tired of rvorking rvith the U.S. Forest Service. rvhich manages the l7 million acres of the Tongass National Forest (see Feb., p. 48). Norv that the federal agency has stepped up efforts to make more timber available. Seley called workers back to the mill. Pacific is one of the ferv remaining milling operations left in the forests of southeast Alaska.
The future of the mill rides on the a-sency's Buckdance-Madder timber sale. for which Seley is the apparent high bidder. He also has a contract for another l6 million bd. ft. from other sales.
Clearing a backlog of biomass from Oregon's forests could prevent fires and produce electricity. according to the Oregon Business Council.
"Here in Oregon, rve have a unique asset in the form of millions of acres of timberland in need of thinning." said Allyn Ford. president and c.e.o. of Roseburg Forest Products. who heads the council's efforts to encourage rvood-products manufacturers to use the waste to fuel onsite powergenerating facilities. Any excess energy rvould be sold to public utilities.
"When the cost of oil goes over $50 a barrel. all of a sudden a lot of things click into place." said Ford. By next spring. Roseburg rvill open its own porver facility at its plant in Weed. Ca.
Along rvith other industry officials, Ford spoke before a house committee in support of clearing forests for biomass. Much of the timber "is stunted like carrots in a patch that didn't get thinned." said Ford. resulting in dan_eerously overgrown forests and timber that isn't suitable for lumber.
"We have a huge volume of biomass that has been building over the years." said Russ Hoeflich, Oregon director for The Nature Convervancy. "A srveep of fire is normal," he said. "But norv we are out of balance and prone to unnaturally severe wildfires and disease."
An estimated l5 million acres of Oregon forest needs clearing, most of it orvned by the U.S. Forest Service. Cut at an annual rate of 7(X),000 acres, biomass could make 20% of the electricity used in Oregon each year-for the next 20 to 25 vean.

A S THE world looks for ways to la.keep carbon dioxide (CO2)-the greenhouse gas produced by burning fossil fuels-out of our atmosphere, science tells us managed forests will play a key role.
Trees are the most powerful concentrators of carbon on Earth. Through photosynthesis, they absorb COz from the atmosphere and store it in their wood, which is nearly 507o carbon by weight.
You might be surprised to learn young forests outperform old growth in carbon absorption. While old trees contain large amounts of carbon, their absorption rate has slowed to a near halt. A young tree, though it contains little fixed carbon, pulls COz from the atmosphere at a much faster rate.
While it is true that cutting down an old tree results in a net release of carbon, new trees growing in their place can more than make up the difference. And wooden furniture made in the Elizabethan era still holds the carbon fixed hundreds of years ago.
The relationship between trees and greenhouse gases is simple enough on the surface. Trees grow by taking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, through photosynthesis. converting it into sugars. The sugars are then used as energy and material to build the cellulose and lignin that are the main constituents of wood.
When a tree rots or burns the car-
bon contained in the wood is released back to the atmosphere. Active forest management, such as thinning, removing dead trees, and clearing debris from the forest floor is very effective in reducing the number and intensity of forest fires. And the wood that is removed can be put to good use for lumber, paper and energy.
Accounting provides a useful metaphor to discuss forests and carbon sequestration. Old growth forests often have a large "balance" ofcarbon that has built up over time in wood and soil. They are not adding much new carbon because they are decaying at about the same rate as they are grorving. In financial terms, this is like a company that has a lot of assets. but is operating on a break-even basis. Young forests have a smaller balance of carbon compared to old forests but they are accumulating carbon at a rapid rate. In that sense they are like an emerging company that has few assets but is very profitable and grorving rapidly.
The impact of forests on the global carbon cycle can be boiled down to these key points
On the negative side, the most important factor influencing the carbon cycle is deforestation, rvhich results in a permanent loss of forest cover and a large release of CO: into the atmosphere. Deforestationwhich occurs primarily in tropical
countries where forests are permanently cleared and converted to agriculture and urban settlement--is responsible for about 2O% of global CO: emissions, according to a United Nations-World Meteorological Organization Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.
On the positive side. planting fastgrorving trees is the best way to absorb CO: from the atmosphere. Many countries rvith temperate forests have seen an increase in carbon stored in trees in recent years. This includes Nerv Zealand. the U.S.. Srveden and Canada. Plus. using wood sustainably reduces the need for non-renewable fossil fuels and materials such as steel and concrete-the very causes of CO: emissions in the first place.
The good news is that forests in the U.S. are net carbon sinks, since annual grorvth exceeds annual harvest. We are cunently experiencing an increase in forested land as forests are being re-established on land previously used for agriculture. Catastrophic rvildfires are uncommon in managed forests, whereas millions of acres of unmanaged forests burn every year due to excessive build-up of dead trees and woody debris.
Every rvood substitute, including steel, plastic, and cement, requires far more energy to pnrduce than lumber. More energy usually translates into more greenhouse gases in the form of fossil fuel consumption or cement production.
Some activists would have us believe using wood is bad for forests. Yet we are the largest per-capita consumers of wood in the world, and North American forests cover approximately the same area of land as they did 100 years ago. According to the U.N.. our forests have expanded nearly l0 million acres over the past decade. This is precisely because we use a lot of rvood, which sends a signal to the marketplace to grorv more trees to meet demand. This is a winrvin situation for both the economy and the environment. One of the best ways to address climate change is to use more rvood. not less. Wood is the most abundant. biodegradable and renervable material on the planet.
It is hard to imagine a more allpurpose. environmentally friendly act than that of contributing to the number and variety of trees grorving throughout the rvorld. In the age of climate change. Johnny Appleseed takes on a nerv meaning.

nership of Big Creek Timber orvns the land and timber.
Over the years, Big Creek has gained a reputation as an environmentally responsible company. winning several environmental awards. Ten years ago, Big Creek became one of the first redwood product suppliers to be accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council.
"You can fly over the forests in this area and not see any sign of cutting," said McCrary. "We practice selective harvesting, not clear cutting, and actually cut less trees than is prescribed."
According to McCrary, once a redwood tree is harvested, sprouts will grow from the roots and encircle the stump. "In most of the stands, you get far more trees than you need, so you have to thin them out as they get bigger," he said. "Fifty or 60 years later. you have a marketable-size tree."
Actual replanting, he said, only takes place in stands that don't have enough trees or where the stands are thin.

fl EMEMBER when you were l\young, you jumped in the lake, ocean or pool without regard to how chilly it might be? Later in life you began to put your toes in first to see if it was safe. True?

0. Wtry do many salespeople resist new ideas? Because they don't want to improve? Or make more sales? Or make more money?
Mark Twain said, "Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed." Even very successful business people must act on new ideas or they will lose the "very."
-,I. Do you receive more gifts from clients than you give? It is extremely rare for this to occur, but it does happen to a very rare breed of salespeople. Clients value them as the best of the best with helpful ideas, relationships and much more. It's simple and it's hard to gain this level of respect. Earn it.
o O. When you grow up. will you

U. Are you normal? Normal often means lack of creativity and imagination. Many salespeople are boring. They drone on and on. These same people describe super producers as "eccentric." They say such things due to the great disparity between those rvho are always boring and those rvho have grown several layers above them.
Yes. most high achievers are flarved, but usually in a good way. Remember that most of the great things in this world were accomplished by eccentrics and not by those who were always cautious and safe realizing few victories and defeats. Insanity do€sn't mn in my family. It gallops.
10. or" you still a great student of the profession? Ninety percent of safes books are purchased by lOVc of the sales professionals. That means:
(a) Ninety percent of the salespeo-

(b) Ninety percent spend more money on the outside of their head than they invest on the inside. Skip trvo haircuts in a year and you can buy trvo books. IQ beats GQ almost every time. Malcolm Forbes quipped. "The dumbest people I know are those rvho knorv it all."
Seek the truth for all l0 suggestions above and act this week. There are a lot of people counting on you.

Weyerhaeuser Co.'s marine shipping subsidiary has launched a new "short sea service" linking British Columbia with Southern California through the Port of Long Beach, Ca.
Westwood Shipping Line will transport Weyerhaeuser's and other shippers' cargo using the Westwood Pomona, a 10,200-gt freight side loader it recently acquired from Finnish carrier Birka Cargo. The 20year-old vessel. which joins seven other ships in the Westwood fleet, has been outfitted to transport a wide variety of commodities.
The new service begins next month.
"By adding this new service to our own shipping line, Weyerhaeuser is in a unique position to build value for its businesses and for new customers." said Westwood Shipping Line president Craig Larvrence. "As ground transportation becomes increasingly challenging due to congestion and higher costs. we're offering a strong logistical alternative rvith cost. reliability and environmental benefi ts."
Westwood Shipping also makes 52 transpacific round-trip voyages annu-
ally. serving customers in more than 20 ports in Japan. Korea and China from Longvierv and Seattle. Wa., and Vancouver. B.C.
Weyerhaeuser renamed the nerv vessel in honor of its first ship. the SS Pomona. rvhich it bought in 1923 to move rvood products betrveen North American ports. The ship spent 23 years sailing for the company. including use as a military transport during World War II.
Weyerhaeuser Co. will relocate its Tacoma, Wa, log export facility on the Hylebos Waterway to the Port of Olympia and has shuttered its Puget Sound Chip Center to make room for expansion of the Port of Tacoma
The company is still considering whether and where it will open a new chip facility. The old plant had exported wood chips to Asia
In November, Weyco agreed to a $12.5 million settlement with the port to vacate the 25acrc site on the Blair Waterway I I years before is lease expired
The port will tear down the 33-year-chip facility, so the waterway can be widened to accommodate larger ships.

Mortgage rates may be on the rise, but the home improvement industry remains strong. Total home improvement product sales in 2005 are estimated at a record $291 billion-up 7 .5Vo. With the help of continued hurricane rebuilding activity, 2006 sales should increase an additional 4.67o to $305 billion, according to a new study by Global Insight.
Housing starts and existing home sales - strong coincident indicators for home improvement activity-both posted over 4Vo increases in 2005. Consumer market sales clearly benefited, rising 7 .2Vo to $216 billion.
"With the housing market beginning to show a gradual slowdown, there has been some talk that the home improvement industry will suffer its effects," states Fred Miller, managing director of the Home Improvement Research Institute. "But housing turnover is only part of the picture. A large piece of the home improvement market involves maintenance and repairs as well as improvements to homes where there is no change in ownership. This makes the home improvement industry far less
cyclical than new home construction."
Even the most current data points to the continual health of the home improvement industry. In recently released data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, December 2005 retail sales for building material and garden equipment/supply dealers grew 9.77o over the same period in the prior year. This growth was significantly above retailing in general.
Continued hurricane rebuilding efforts will also help to offset the effects of a market slowdown well into 2006. In particular, the professional market, stimulated by the repair and rebuilding efforts, was up by 8.47o for 2005.
And the long-term outlook for the market remains strong. Global Insight projects an average of 4.6Vo total market growth in constant dollars for 2008-2010-below the pace of tne past five years, but well ahead of the rate of overall economic growth.
Weyerhaeuser joint venture subsidiary Nelson Forest Products Co. has placed its New Zealand timber
"My help really takes the time to walk people through the whole project. If [customers] are willing to give it a try,I'm willing to bend over backward to make sure they're successful. My employees feel the same way."
- John Knibloe, Knibloe Hqrdware, Jackson. MLassets-including a sawmill and 165,000 acres of plantation forestsup for sale
Federal Way, Wa.-based Weyerhaeuser Co. attributed the sale to the pending expiration of the l4-year-old JV partnership with a New Zealand timber investment fund.
Weyerhaeuser New Zealand managing director Lees Seymour anticipated the sale of Nelson Forests Joint Venture would be completed by the third or fourth quarter of 2006.
Itr/HEN a bipartisan group of V Y nearly 100 congressmen proposed speeding up restoration of forests after catastrophic wildfire, the idea drew widespread support from those interested in giving future generations forests to enjoy.
The proposal would do two important things: quicken the removal of dead trees that otherwise would provide fuel for future wildfires and accelerate the planting of new trees to restore forests that burned.
Those supporting the proposal include Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth. Jim Brown. who served as the top forestry official to four Oregon governors, the Society of American Foresters, the National Association of State Foresters, and the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
With 32 million acres of national forest burned between 2000 and 2004. the need for restoration is clear.
However. what is happening-or not happening-in federal forests in California provides a glimpse of the challenge of forest restoration. There, the Forest Service has only replanted 3.87o of forests burned in 2001.
Most of the remaining burned forest is converting to brush that will dominate the landscape for centuries.
Unfortunately, excessive regulation, unnecessary appeals, and lawsuits prevent the Forest Service from keeping burned forests from becoming brush fields.
As one who has studied our forests for nearly 40 years, I think one of the most important parts of this proposed legislation is to use science to make decisions.
Bv Thomas M. BonnicksenExtremists are using hyperbole, unsubstantiated claims. and convenient myths to oppose the legislation. In particular, they cite myths about the Yellowstone fires of 1988 to argue that we should not restore burned forests.
As Congress considers this new legislation, it is imperative the facts are known and that extremists don't rewrite history. In 1988, U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives committees sent me to Yellowstone on a fact-finding assignment to investigate the fires.
Wildfires burned 1.3 million acres of forest within and around Yellowstone National Park. These fires bfackened 4l% of the park. Now, because lodgepole pine is growing back over much of the burned area, many people are claim-

ing that the fires were natural and all bumed forests will recover in the same way. They proclaim this as the "rebirth" of Yellowstone, as if it is a miracle, even though it is common knowledge that lodgepole pine regenerates after fire more quickly than most trees.
The wildfires that swept through Yellowstone and surrounding forests in the summer of 1988 were not natural. Those fires were the result of nearly a century of fire suppression that created a ready-to-burn forest that nature would have never allowed.
Scientific study shows that in 1735, only 3O.4Vo of the forest consisted of scattered patches of decadent old growth that was ready to burn. By 1886, Native Americans had been removed from the park, so the fires they set for centuries stopped. Then the Park Service put out all lightning fires, which allowed flammable old growth to increase. By 1985 it covered 64.9Vo of the park as one continuous blanket of fuel.
The Park Service knew this, but they adopted a "let burn" policy in 1972 anyway, even during a drought when 70-mph winds were blowing. That is what led to the huge fires of 1988. No fire ever burned such a large area of Yellowstone during its history.
Thus, the Yellowstone wildfires were caused by a combination of decades of neglect and incredibly poor judgment. It was not a natural event; the forest that is coming back is not natural either.
Now, we see a forest dominated by young lodgepole pines intermixed with dead trees. They will grow older and thicker as a unit, becoming a vast unbroken mass of highly flammable fuel. This will create a new cycle of massive and unnatural wildfires.
It is vitally important that policymakers understand that our response to unnatural, catastrophic fires cannot be to "let nature take its course."
We are the cause of today's monster wildfires, not nature.
The blackened forests and brush fields that spread across the West remind us of our nation's loss from recent wildfires. This may be our last chance to prevent the next firestorm and restore our forest heritage.

"Because. whatever you want to be, you have to be a salesman."
So true. People are always selling. They sell their products, their services, their ideas and most importantly. they sell themselves. No matter what you do for a living. you are a salesperson.
So what will help someone succeed in this rvorld of "sales"? Let's take a look at how branding can help you sell yourself more successfully.
What is a brand? It is simply the emotional reaction and attachment that a customer has to his or her total experience with a company, product or service. Judgments about brand are created in the hearts and minds of customers.
Corporations understand the importance of branding. In this very competitive marketplace, it is more critical than ever that they differentiate themselves from their competi-

tion. Success depends on bein_e visible-standing out and rising above the crorvd. Mana-eing their brand allorvs companies to grab attention and -eain a hold on the hearts and minds of their customers.
But. you may be thinking. horv can someone maximize their brand as an individual? Horv can a person harness the porver of brand. to help them stand out from the crorvd. to demonstrate the value they add? A personal brand provides a person the same benefits as a corporate brand. Your brand is rvhat you represent. rvhat you stand for in the hearts and minds of others. It is not posin_e. pretending or posturing. It is about rvho you are every day consistently. and rvho you are rvorking to become.
As you attempt to manage your personal brand. remember that everyone makes split-second decisions about the people they come in contact rvith. While you're taking in data and forming opinions about the people around you. they're doing the same. The way you dress. rvhat your business card says. your tone of voice. your body langua-se. your rvork ethic. the rvords you use-all form mini-impressions in the minds of others. These impressions are brand touch points. Collectively they form your brand image. You must remain arvare of and responsive to horv your everyday actions create the impressions others have of you. so you can constantly shape your brand to maximize your value.
Regardless of rvhere you are in the development of your image, there are five areas that you need to focus on:
Whether you like it or not. you are judged on your appearance. The moment you rvalk into a room. people's mental checklists come into play. Are you rvell dressed? Check. Is your hairstyle both flattering and contemporary? Check. Do you look rvell groomed? Check. Do you look successful? Check.
Many free spirits say. "I'm not concerned rvith shallorv things like clothes. My clothes express my personality." Yes, they do. But think about rvhat message you're sending about yourself. Is it. "l don't care rvhat you think"? The key isn't having the most extravagant rvardrotre: it's taking the time to look appropriate for the setting and situation.
You rvant to be judged on merit: but if you don't make a positive physical impression. you may never get a chance to impress others rvith your knorvled-ee and skill.
No matter horv rvonderful your physical impression. you have to support it rvith good communication skills. Have you ever rvatched a presentation given by someone rvho is slump-shouldered. can't look you in the eye. and bores you to tears rvith his lackluster voice? Don't let that be you.

low through, your promises are meaningless. For example, you can assure someone that you make it a practice to always be on time; but when you show up late you are sending quite another message. Your actions don't match your words. Though people may not notice when you are punctual, every time you are late you leave a negative impression. The message received is that you made the person you are meeting a low priority, whereas showing up on time or a little early indicates that you consider that person and the time you will be spending with him very imporrant.
This attitude goes beyond punctuality. You need to be seen as someone others can count on in a pinch. Ask yourself these questions:
! Can you be depended on to follow through no matter what?
Are you the go-to person who consistently gives more than is asked for?
Are you able to multi-task with grace?
Is your word your bond?
Answer "yes" to these questions and you will deserve the confidence you're seeking.
You probably don't like to appear to be bragging about your accomplishments. No one likes the guy rvho flaunts his fancy degrees and financial successes.
However, that's a far cry from sharing the very things that qualify you as an expert on something. If you're asking
people to believe that you knorv rvhat you're doing and/or to take your advice. you need to tell them rvhy their confidence in you is justified. What makes you qualified will vary with what you're trying to do, sell or reach. Perhaps it rvill be years of experience. a long and/or varied job history. an advanced education or a depth of research. The key is in giving your listener the information needed to make an informed decision.
Letter writing is an art. You need to make your communication compelling and effective. People rvill also want to do business rvith you based on what they see on paper.
Although emails are intended to be less formal methods of communication than rvritten letters, you still have to be aware of proper email etiquette. rvhich includes correct grarnmar, spelling and punctuation. Mistakes in these areas make you look unprofessional or uneducated.
Something as small as your business card can have a big impact how you are viewed. When you hand someone a tattered card that has rvriting on the back. you are leaving an impression that you uue not prepared to do business.
Remember. every day you have the ability to either support your current brand or enhance its power by supporting these five brand touch points. Create a powerful image that sells.

Boise Engineered Wood Products has introduced SawTek automated cutting systems to its dealers to achieve faster, safer, more accurate processing of Boise BCI Joists and
Versa-Lam laminated veneer lumber. SawTek systems are fast and accurate, typically cutting about 20.000 lineal ft. in an eight-hour shift rvith accuracy to 1132". The sarvs are used
in conjunction rvith a package of other Boise value-added services that are all components of Boise's Simple Framing System. designed to help dealers and builders improve their profitability and reduce the cycle time required to build homes.
"We think just supplying products alone to our channel partners won't get the job done anymore." said Denny Huston. sales & marketing manager of Boise Engineered Wood Products in Boise. Id.
"SarvTek and our other valueadded services help us rvork together rvith our distributors and dealers and their builders. so we all have the ability to solve supply-chain problems and run better. more profitable. more long-term businesses." he added.
SarvTek and its peripherals are fully compatible rvith Boise's new BC Framer 6.1 integrated framing software to efficiently process longlength engineered rvood products. Because of the accuracy of home plans created using BC Framer, SarvTek cutting systems can also deliver ready-to-install framing, reducing a builder's cycle time by eliminating most jobsite custom-cutting and cutting errors.
SarvTek automated cuning systems can also combine and optimize several orders simultaneously and keep track of each piece. SarvTek order optimization lets dealers intermix cut lists of several jobs to get the most out of every length and virtually eliminate waste. Besides reducing material costs, optimization simplifres inventory control, rvith engineered wood products usually ordered in the longest available lengths for greatest cutting flexibility.
Inkjet printers are another adjunct to SarvTek and are used to mark every piece for delivery to the jobsite, and relate back to the color-coded framing placement plan for proper installation in the structure. Because of the clarity of the color-coded framing placement plan from BC Framer, even framers rvho can't speak fluent English can frame the home rvithout errors.
Boise value-added services are designed to solve supply-chain problems and help Boise and its channel partners run more successful businesses. "We rvant to lead the charge in helping our supply-chain partners find rvays to run their businesses more smoothly and more profitably."
