Penofin Facility To Expand
Performance Coatings Inc. plans to construct a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and R&D center at corporate headquarters in Ukiah, Ca.
As part of the expansion, the company is constructing a new corporate headquarters oflice that will be a showcase for fine wood and its Penofin products. The plant will produce in excess of 2 million gallons a year, according to John Mayginnes, chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
The large capacity of the new facility is designed to meet the growing market worldwide and the explosive demand for the new Penofin oil based product manufactured to meet California air requirements, Mayginnes stated. "The new Penofin oil is parallel in performance and identical in appearance and applications to the original oil," he explained. "lt is the only low solids, high performance, penetrating oil that meets all California Air Resources Board (CARB) VOC requirements. The primary solvent is non-flammable and is not consid- ered a potential toxic air pollutant by the EPA."
Performance Coatings Inc. has been named to the Inc. 500 list for the third consecutive year. Performance Coatings Inc. is believed the only paint and coatings company to ever be included on the list which has been compiled by Inc. Magazine for the past eight years, Mayginnes explained.
Burglarized Yard Secured
Neiman-Reed Lumber Co., Van Nuys, Ca., has finally halted a string of as many as 20 burglaries during the last six months.
"We've really had to beef up security," said general manager Ed Langley. "The yard's like a fort." To stop the thieves, who would typically cut a hole in the fence and drive into the yard, Neiman-Reed installed metal bars behind the reinforced fencing, in addition to full-time security guards, security sensors, alarms, flashing sirens and chains.
About $7,000 in equipment and plywood was reportedly stolen by two separate groups during an esti- mated 15 to 20 break-ins, Langley said.
The Los Angeles Police Department has since apprehended one thief, who reportedly had been stealing equipment from Neiman-Reed's office to resell for drug money, said Langley. The second, unrelated team of professional robbers had been stealing plywood, he said.
The wholesale yard is one of the largest lumber suppliers to the industrial trade in the area. About 80/o of the wholesale division's volume is supplying Neiman-Reed's l0 Lumber City retail locations in the San Fernando Valley.

Brothers Tom and Charles White had been leasing the 58,277-sq. ft. property from former owners Southern Pacific for $520 a month, less than l0 per sq. ft. The city bought the land two years ago and recently proposed a rent closer to the "market rate" of 80. The monthly rate would jump to $5000.
In addition, the area had become one of the targets in a massive redevelopment program. The Whites own the store building and its street frontage. The company is not affiliated with White Brothers, Oakland.
Tom White had long ago planned to retire now, although brother Charles wanted to stay on for four more years.
