PALCO RUSTIC REDWOOD
Bevel Siding in a Dramatic Pattern
This shape of the rabbeted pattern has a self-aligning feature which aids the siding's application. Also, driving nails rs easy because fhe back surface of the rabbeted sidlng ls flush against the sheathing; also would be flush against stud surtaces when applied direct to studs.
There is increasing demand for rustic redwood bevel sidings. Here is Pacific Lumber's rustic redwood in a handsome new rabbeted pattern. Available in 6" and 8" widths, this pattern provides maximum stability with extraordinary ease of application. PALCO rustic rabbeted gives a strong horizontal line to a new home that will set it apart from the more commonplace vertical applications.
Additional important advantages:
o lt is air-seasoned.
o Has a handsome saw-textured surface.
o Has a combination of genuine natural rustic appearance with the traditional inherent characteristics of redwood's superior performances.
o Economical-is available at affordable costs.
o Produced in long lengths, it fits on most wall areas with very few butt joints.
o Extra thickness helps keep knots in place.

Here's the bell for round 2
rFHE ongoing fight over the flood of Canadian I softwood lumber into the United States has moved beyond the opening round probings into some serious sparring. The battle over imports has all the makings of a bruising barroom brawl'
There is much at stake for both sides. The U.S. market is a rich one for the Canadians; a loss or major decrease in its size would have a major impact on their industry. On this side of the border, the Canadian competition is blamed for mill closures, lowered prices and profits and diminishing markets for U.S. wood. Many here see disaster if the situation is allowed to continue unchanged. The imports now account for one-third of the total U.S. market - some say more - and it is a rare part of the country that has not felt the effect of the massive Canadian shipments.
Our domestic timber industry fought a losing
DAVID CUTLER editor-publisher
battle in 1982-1983 as it sought countervailing duties on Canadian imports from the U.S' International Trade Commission. It was lost on legal issues, most agree. The present contest will be political.
A committee of major U.S. manufacturers has assembled a war chest, hired lawyers and is seeking a regulatory approach such as duties, antidumping measures or similar restraints such as those achieved by the beleaguered steel and auto industries in recent years.
In addition to industry actions on both sides of the border, each government has become involved. Recent talks sponsored by the Canadian government in their capital at Ottawa brought together representatives of both sides as a first step to finding a solution agreeable to all.
It is a complex and emotional fight. We do not look for either an easy or an early conclusion'

Redwood: quality sells
EDWOOD'S sales appeal can be summed un in one word: "quality." There is always a demand for quality. Redwood's reputation for quality is founded on decades of building experience. Redwood has performance characteristics not available in other woods-even woods treated with chemicals. No other wood provides the longJasting beauty of redwood. This includes resistance to shrinking, warping and checking. Redwood takes finishes better than most other woods. As a result, decks, fences and shelters made from redwood simply look better than projects made from other woods and they continue to look better 10, 15 and 20 years after construction.
Redwood is the perfect wood for outdoor use. Decks, trellising, planters, spa environments, benches and seats of redwood all add special ac-
cents to outdoor living areas. In addition, they are easy to care for with little or no maintenance required year after year.
Fences, too, are more handsome and practical when constructed of

redwood. Fence posts, fence rails and fence-boards make the job of fence construction easier for the do-it-yourselfer or professional. Again, durability comes with good looks. Redwood fences withstand weather extremes season after season.
You can recommend redwood to your quality conscious builders and do-it-yourselfers with the confidenee that there will be no customer callbacks because redwood lives up to its promises. And when you think about it, redwood doesn't cost much more than ordinary wood for you or your customers. Plus, you'll get top price because redwood won't warp, split or splinter in the yard like other woods. Your customer is purchasing a quality product. Quality has its own dividends. It looks better and keeps its good looks longer. Who says you can't buy happiness?

Wrapping up convenience, protection and profit all in one unit.
f n the lumber markets of today a I vitally significant contribution to profit can be made through inventory control and protection of valuable inventory investment from mill to retail yard or the ultimate job site. Sim-Pak unit packaging on redwood lumber has been developed by Simpson in response to these needs.
Convenience
Sim-Pak units are designed in size, shape, and weight to accommodate forklift handling in single or multi-unit combinations. Both loading and unloading of trucks and rail cars are easier and faster with compact, high integrity units assembled with precision pressure strapping equipment at the mill. Mixed units of Architectural Finish grades and patterns are readily combined in the same shipment.
Protection
Smaller, lighter, protectively wrapped units, each containing 1,200 or 2,400 b.f. of Architectural Finish grades in random lengths are easy to handle, reducing damage in yard handling and transit. All units are totally wrapped in a combination of heavy duty cardboard and durable 6 mil poly coated paper. Designed to facilitate unit selling, the packaging provides improved protection from mill to market.
Profit
With Sim-Pak random units you can order what you need when you need it and sell everything you order without throwing away profits in damaged stock. And since time is money, the savings in time in loading, unloading, handling and re-tallying plus the savings
in actual shipping time all contribute very directly to your profits.

tunity to make their customers aware of unusual and effective uses of the product in building.
For example, the photograph above would be an excellent one to show to builders or individuals who are planning their own homes.
In most contemporary homes the roof is merely a roof, but it can be a dramatic repetition of the redwood used elsewhere in the structure. In this Mercer Island, Wa., home, the shingles are laid on two different planes instead of the usual single plane. Each plane is then outlined in redwood select knotty thick butt bevel siding.
The distinctive borders are created by placing redwood select knotty siding with the butt at the front edge. In addition, overhang shingles are laid over soffits of 2x3 redwood construction common.
The innovative roof detail is a testimony to the beauty and elegance of the redwood which is a common denominator in unifying interior, exteri-

ation of natural attributes such as insulation values, durability, resistance to warping, twisting and checking.
Treated with a semi-transparent stain, redwood will retain its natural beauty and warmth of color through the years with minimal owner maintenance required. Inside as well as outside, redwood adds beauty to the home as well as practicality.
Dealers who become proponents of redwood will find ample opportunity to suggest the material for a variety of uses, both by professionals and d-iyers. They also can be confident of the quality of the material when they convince customers that they should specify redwood for their homes or other projects.

Advertising can help you sell redwood
11 DVERTISING plus special sales Apromotions and events can help you sell more redwood.
Ads for newspapers, radio and tv are easy to create if you follow a few simple rules. In addition, there is a lot of help available to you. Redwood manufacturers and distributors have special promotion kits which contain ideas for ads including repro art, headlines, selling themes, decorative borders and end use illustrations as well as directions for putting it all together. Newspapers maintain people on their staffs capable of helping you to plan and execute an ad.
Art board or slides for tv advertising and sample radio scripts are included in some manufacturers' advertising kits. Radio and tv station advertising departments have help available too.
The most effective ads usually have seven attention grabbing elements.
(l) A headline proclaiming a catchy promotion such as a truckload sale or an 8 hour sale.
(2) A listing of redwood grades and patterns available.
(3) Prices
(4) End use illustrations showing decks, fences, etc.
(5) A coupon offer for redwood literature and building plans or an invitation to a redwood clinic, or both, to build store traffic.
(6) Prominent identification of the dealer and his location.
(7) Tie in promotion of related items such as concrete, stain, outdoor furniture.
Choice of media is important to the success of an advertisement. Local media within the major trading area of the retail outlet should carry heavy advertising for a promotion. An advertising barrage using all available media can capture more customers than a weak half-hearted attempt.
Organization of the special sales events to be advertised is equally important. Weekend, truckload and doit-yourself selling themes are popular for redwood. The more innovative the promotion, the more sales success.
(2) Stock Available
(3) and Prices
(7) Tie-in of Related Items
(4) End Use ldea
(5) Special Offer
Special redwood sales promotion events can be tied into deck contests. deck building clinics, seminars on building outdoor furniture or play equipment for children. Special clinics or literature can emphasize the use of redwood for remodeling or new building as both exterior siding and interior paneling.
Timing is another important factor. Redwood sales promotions should be emphasized during the time of the year when homeowners are thinking about adding amenities to their homes.
Regardless of approach, dealers must promote and advertise to sell.
Market opportunities are there for those who use all available tools to gain their share.

Redwood's availabi lity assured

continue to be available commercially? What will the product mix and volume be?
Since we cannot harvest the same trees over and over, a change was bound to come. The generation transition has brought about two distinct changes in the redwood lumber product. Because the sapwood ring is about the same thickness in both old and new generation trees, the proportion of sapwood to heartwood is greater. Heartwood exists in young growth trees, but in lesser proportions. By the same token, a heavier percentage of the increased sapwood will fall into garden and construction grades.
The second major change is in the proportion of knotty grades. In the past, the proportion has been about 6090 upper grades and 40s/o knot<ontaining grades. As the transition progresses, this ratio will gradually change to about 2590 upper grades and 7Ss/o knotty grades.
Neither of these changes is having as great an impact on the end use market as first glance might indicate. We have discovered that in the past we had a tendency to "overuse" the upper grades of redwood-especially heartwood-mostly because it was readily available. Coincidental with the changing resource, there has been a definite market shift in favor of garden and construction grades.
Even knottygrades havetaken on a new focus, opening up exciting vistas of end use versatility. Because the trees harvested are younger, the knots tend to be smaller and tighter. For the first time a sizable volume of the rustic knotty grades is ideally suited for exterior siding and trim, and interior paneling, not to mention outdoor uses such as decks, fences, gazebos, and trellises.
In the projected grade mix total, the siding and paneling volume availability is just about the same as in the past. The difference is the addition of a highly attractive, affordable, rustic, tight knotted product comparable to
what pine and cedar have had available for many years. This new grade category offers the end use possibilities of architectural finish grades with the physical characteristics and cost of garden grades.
Select knotty will occupy a significant place in the future. Properly dried, with attractive rustic knots, this grade is rapidly gaining popularity as an exterior siding on custom, tract and manufactured homes as well as showing great potential for interior uses.
Another plus in the new grade mix, as defined by the resource, is a significant increase in garden grades, which in recent years have continued to experience a growing demand. This is possible because total redwood output will be increasing significantly in the years ahead.
For the better part of the past two decades, conservationists have worried that the redwoods were endangered, and lumbermen have worried that supplies of this important wood would diminish. Contrary to popular belief, the redwood forests today cover approximately 1,700,000 acres, just as they did over 200 years ago

REDWOOD RESOURCE
(Cotrtinued fron page 1l)
when early explorers first discovered the California giants.
Another common misconception is that redwoods take a long time to mature, and are exceedingly slow-growing. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Redwood grows at a very fast rate for the first 100 years, then begins to slow down somewhat. Very old, overmature stands are in a sense standing in storage. Young redwood stands grow at an average rate of 1,000 board feet per acre per year.
The redwood forest is capable of growing more board feet per acre per year than any other softwood timber type in the country. In addition to reproducing naturally from seed as well as from prolific sprouting of the stumps left after harvest, new redwood forests are assured as the result of hand planting redwood seedlings.
As evidence of a commitment to the future of redwood. within the last five years, Simpson has expended over $20 million for harvestable resources and additional land on which to grow more trees. Many of these trees will not be harvested in our lifetime, but they assure that redwood is here to stay, backed by the resource necessary to make it a growing reality in your profit picture.
Lumber lmport Legislation
Legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives to limit imports of Canadian softwood lumber, siding, shakes and shingles, and particleboard for a five year period. Representatives James Weaver (DOr.); Larry Craig (R-td.) and Beryl Anthony (D-Ar.) were among the 22 members sponsoring the bill.

liller Redwood Plywood combines the anelized construction eff iciency of ywood with the rich natural beauty, ndurance and quality of redwood. Only dwood plywood offers redwood's ell-known dimensional stability, fire rsistance, heartwood decay-resistance rd ease of finishing with plywood's rndling and economy.
vailable in different face patterns, >neer grades and dimensions, Miller edwood Plywood offers outstanding :sign versatility for rugged low-mainInance exterior siding, interior panelg, and garage doors, carport walls, rear walls, ceilings, storage buildings, >ffits, garden shelters, fences and :her outdoor structu res.
lassed in Group 3 in accordance with ,S. Product Standard PS1, Miller Redood Plywood meets or exceeds the nerican Plywood Association "3O3 ding Specification." lt also meets UD/FHA Minimum Property Stanrrds, UM-64, and Uniform Building ode (UBC), Basic Building Code, and andards for application directly to all studs.
-icause of its ability to resist racking hen properly nailed, Miller Redwood ywood requires no diagonal bracing hen applied to one 8-foot or two foot wall sections. For shear values in dwood plywood shear wall construc)n, see the American Plywood ;sociation s publication, Panel Wall )nstruction.
Flamespread ratings established by Underwrite/s Laboratories, Inc., are 75 for S/8-inch untreated redwood plywood, meeting Class ll standards under the UBC and Basic Building Code. Products 3/8-inch thick meet Class lll ?5225) standards, respectively. Special exterior fire retardant treatment is available to reach a Class I UBC and BBC rating.
Insulation value of Redwood plywood: (minimum ratings) K=0.98; R(3/8-inch) =0.45; R(5/8-inch)=0.75. Redwood plywood 5/8-inch thick insulates as well as 21/zinches of plaster,3 inches of clay tile,4 inches of glass, 872 inches of concrete, or 9 inches of stucco. A frame wall with redwood plywood interior paneling and exterior siding has about half the heat loss of lath and plaster finish on an 8-inch cement block or 1-inch stucco wall.
Specifying Miller Redwood Plywood: Grades, Composition
Miller Redwood Plywood's intended use, veneer grade, pattern, size and factory finish should be included in spee ifications. For example: "Exterior siding sha// use heartwood face veneers. with inverted batten pattern grooved 12 inches on center with shiplap edge. Size: 5/8-inch thick, 48-3/8 inches wide, and 9 feet long. Each panel shall be factory finished with water repellent, and identified with an American Plywood Associati o n g rade t rade m ark."
Miller Redwood Plywood is manufactured with a shadowy saw-textured
surface that enhances its natural woodgrains and tones. Heartwood and sapwood-containing face veneers produce several grades that offer specifiers a range in appearance and price. Our top quality grade is identified by the proprietary name "Miller Premium Saw-Textured". Face veneers are entirely redwood heartwood, reddish brown to cinnamon in color, with superior decay and insect resistance from natural heartwood extractives. Veneers are reasonably matched when more than one is used per panel. No knots, knotholes or open splits are allowed. Solid pin knots up to 3/8-inch are allowed, along with shims and router or sled patches reasonably matched for grain and color. Wood patches are limited to panel edges and ends, with only occasional patches allowed in the face.
Our economy grade is "Miller Select Saw-Textured". Face veneers containing sapwood offer a rustic, varied appearance ideal for many building styles. Miller Select Saw-Textured does not contain knots, knotholes or open splits. Router or sled patches, and pin knots up to 3/8-inch are allowed, as are synthetic-filled knotholes and synthetic shims.
Composition of panels includes crossbanding inner plies that are redwood or another species at mill option. Center and back plies are redwood. Bonding is with fully waterproof exterior glue. Standard orders of redwood plywood are factory-coated with water repellent.
Panel dimensions are 8. 9 or 1O feet long, and 3/8-inch thick for three plies, or 5/8-inch thick for five plies. Panels with square edges are 48 inches wide while shiplapedge panels are 48-3/8 inches, lapped so that net coverage is 48 inches.
Panel patterns include T1-1 't grooved 4" or 8" o.c., inverted batten grooved 12" o.c. and plain faces to which battens can be applied.
Handling and I nstallation
On-site storage should be off the ground, in a cool dry place and out of the sun, and under a covering that's waterproof but allows air to circulate. Packing bands should be removed upon delivery.
Before construction, panel edges, including cut edges, should be sealed with final finish or topcoat materials other than paint For a stain or water repellent topcoat, water repellent should be brushed generously on both blind and exposed panel edges, and particularly lower drip edges of horizontaljoints. For a paint topcoat, edges should be sealed with paint primer. Vapor barriers applied to the interior or warm side of stud walls can increase the life of exterior plywood finishes and help avoid moisture build-up in stud cavities from extreme climate conditions. Building paper is required only where square panel edges are nailed directly to studs and not covered with battens. Caulking is required at inside

and outside corners, and at square panel edges.
Non-corrosive nails. Top quality, hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel or aluminum nails should always be used on redwood plywood siding and interior paneling near moisture. We do not recommend the use of common iron, copper, cement-coated or electroplated nails. For strongest nail-holding on exterior siding, spiral-grooved or annular ring shanked anchoring nailsnot casing or finishing nails-should be used, driven flush, not set.
For 3/8-inch plywood siding, 6-penny siding or box nails should be used, and 8-penny for 5/8-inch panels. lf plywood is applied over composition, pressed fiber, insulation board or gypsum board sheathing, the next larger nail size is needed to penetrate at least 172 inches into solid wood. For interiors,4- or 6-penny casing or finishing nails should penetrate at least 3/4-inch into solid wood.
Stud spacing for all vertical siding applications without sheathing must be no more than 16 inches on center. HUD standards also require stud spacing no greater than 16 inches on center for T1 -11 patterns grooved 4 and 8 inches on center. (Check local building codes for variations.) All panel edges and joints require solid backing of studs or blocking.
Studs may be 24 inches on center for all vertical siding with sheathing;
Miller Redwood Plywood Profiles
Miller Saw-textured Redwood Plywood is available in the following standard sizes and patterns (all available in lengths of 8, 9, and
S/8-inch panels in plain or inverted batten patterns grooved 12 inches on center; all horizontal applications with horizontal joints blocked; and all interir paneling. Over interior masonry walls, 1x2 furring strips should support all edges and joints.
Panel spacing and nailing of Miller Redwood Plywood, as with all natural materials, must allow for some expansion and contraction to avoid buckling. In addition, as with all wood siding, a 6 inch minimum clearance should be allowed between redwood plywood sic ing and the ground.
ln vertical exterior applications of square-edge plywood, a 1/8-inch gap should be left between panels. The ga may be caulked or battened, with the batten nailed thr6ugh each side in a staggered pattern, at least '1 inch into solid wood studs. For 3/8- and S/8-incl plywood, grooved, shiplapped or with wide inverted battens, a 1/1 6-inch gap should be left between paneledges. For horizontal joints, galvanized or aluminum flashing should be installed with at least 1/8-inch left between it and the panel above.
For interior paneling applications, a ga1 of 1/32-inch should be left on plywood ends and edges.
Nail spacing for interior and exterior applications: 3/8-inch in from panel edges, every 6 inches along joints and edges, and every 12 inches at intermediate supports.
1O feet). Other special patterns are availabl on quantity orders. Panels are shiplapped on long edges only.

rinishes, Maintenance, ixterior Finishes
rliller Redwood Plywood's saw-textured urface, open cellular structure and lack rf pitch or resins assure outstanding renetration and retention of a wide ariety of finishes. Miller Redwood )lywood is shipped with a factoryrpplied water repellent, allowing it to reather slowly to buckskin tan and rventually to warm gray. Coatings
lescribed here can modify weathering, rrovide some protection from dirt and noisture, and allow unlimited color rffects for maximum design versatility tnd endurance.
br best penetration, coatings should re brushed on with a nylon or natural rristle brush, or special long-nap roller. ipray application doesn't cover sawextured surfaces evenly, although cpcoats can be sprayed on over brushrpplied basecoats. Back-brushing nmediately after spray application rproves penetration.
tdditional water repellent can be rrushed on over factory-applied coatings r prolong Miller Redwood Plywood's ruckskin tan color. lt should be first pplied 6 months to a year after plywood i installed, and should contain a

mildewcide. Reapplication is called for if redwood heartwood extractive stains appear, or when surfaces bleach gray and don't bead water.
Stains can be applied to match or contrast with other structures, ground coverings or natural surroundings. They range from semi-transparent penetrating coatings that provide enduring color without obscuring woodgrain patterns, to heavily-pigmented stains that show off saw-textu red su rfaces.
Paint provides maximum color variation on redwood plywood, and is particularly effective for traditional building styles or accent walls. Latex topcoats should be applied over oiFbased primer that prevents extractive bleeding. Shake-andshingle paints or low-luster alkyd topcoats that absorb water and maY react with heartwood extractives are not recommended.
Varnishes and other clear film-forming finishes should never be used as they tend to yellow, crack and peel after minimum exposure to weather. They are also extremely difficult to refinish. To restore natural colors, sudaces can be scrubbed using a stiff bristle brush and a solution of 1 cup trisodium

phosphate per gallon of warm water, then rinsed with clear water. This should be followed with a solution of 4 ounces of oxalic acid crystals dissolved in 1 gallon of warm water, applied with a soft brush. Wood surfaces should be allowed to dry, and then be rinsed with clear water.
To treat mildew, heavy extractive staining or severe weathering, surfaces should be scrubbed with a solution of 1 cup trisodium phosphate plus 1 cup of household bleach in 1 gallon of water. Rinse with water, apply the oxalic acid solution used above, and allow wood to dry throughly. Rinse again with water and allow it to dry. Finally, water repellent containing mildewcide can be applied to prevent further problems.
lnterior Finishes
Redwood plywood interior paneling should be sealed on faces and edges with two coats of an alkyd-resin base penetrating sealer. Applied directly to wood surfaces or over a coat of penetrating stain, sealer prevents vaporizing of factory-applied water repellent. In kitchens and bathrooms, additional coats of sealer are recommended for easy cleaning.

Unlike Walker who had been very visible within the industry since the 1960 s, Ratner has chosen to remain in the background, a quiet guiding force in bringing both his company and the industry to the attention of the public. I know. Max Ratner was my boss from 1960 to 1973.
In the early days the company's main outlet for lumber was the contract division which supplied the construction in-
dustry in northeast Ohio. As director of sales promotion I had my hands full trying to promote lumber to the then emerging do-it-yourself market without jeopardizing the contract market.
Today, many independent dealers in the United States still face similar problems. I've heard it many times. "I don't want to carry those cheap studs that the chains are promoting, That's not my image. But if I put my construction grade studs on sale to compete in the do-ityourself market, my contractors will put demands on me I can't meet."
Mr. Max's answer was "Billy, you can do anything you want to promote our lumberas long as it's a short term promotion. Just don't let your newspaper ads establish a new long term low selling price in the market." That was a bold statement in those days considering that the contract business represented three times the volume of the retail business.
Ratner had the vision and the fortitude to develop this untapped market. Let's
face it. Prior to the 1960s, lumberyards condescended to allow the public to shop their yards. He, on the other hand, developed stores in which even the nonprofessional felt comfortable. And, in 1960 we for the first time priced and promoted lumber not by the board foot, but by the piece. Remember, even paneling was sold by the square foot in those days. Our counterman had to learn to multiply 32 by rate.
While others in the industry hung by old traditions, Ratner took bold steps. Self-serve lumber departments. Evening store hours. Sunday openings. Branch stores in the suburbs. Installed services departments.
They're standards today but they were a departure in the formative years in our industry. While Ratner wasn't always the creator of these innovations, he must be given credit for allowing his retail team the latitude to try new ventures.
Today, many of the original ll)60 team are in key positions throughout the home center industry. Steve Feinstein is c.e.o. of Eclipse Industries. Harvey Rosen is president of Handyman. Jim Smith is general manager of Builderama. And there's an €umy of merchandise managers, buyers, store managers and success-

executive secretary show dramatic growth in all association activities. More dealers and suppliers in more parts of the region are taking advantage of association services.
lthe past four years has created a need for a comprehensive growth plan and assessment of strength, according to Jerry Woodward, Woodward Lumber Co., Las Cruces, N.M., president of the association.
I
The MSLBMDA grew Z09o in terms of revenue and activity between 1979 and 1984 with nearly half of the growth occuring in 1984 alone. Figures in a progress report released to the board of directors
Attendance at classes and seminars conducted by the association in 1984 on six different subjects in 14 different locations was 552. This figure was much higher than those from previous years. In 1978, 123 people attended seminars, 199 in 1980,209in 1981, l70in 1982 and.263 in 1983. No classes were held in 1979.
Membership showed a similar increase, based on retailer and supplier dues which rose from $46,640 in 1978 to $105,525 in

1984. Figures for 1979, $48,747, and 1980, $50,500, were within a few thousand dollars of 1978. In l98l the total of membership dues jumped to $78,119, $80,212 in 1982 and $96,034 in 1983.
Enrollment in the association's health insurance program experienced similar increases. It grew from 779lives in December 1979 to 3,080 lives in December, 1984. Overall growth ratefor the five years was 29590 with an increase of 2,301 lives. The workers compensation pool grew accordingly with a 10090 increase from 1983 to 1984.
This growth was part of the association's long range planning for the past four years. The need for planning has been intensified as a result of the changes in the industry and the rapid growth the association is experiencing, according to Woodward.
Long-range planning meetings were
held last month in Denver. Follow-up meetings will be held throughout the region this spring to allow for input from the dealers and the establishing of priorities for the coming years.
The association also is conducting a survey designed to assess the size and strength of the building materials industry in the Mountain States region. Questionnaires have been mailed to dealers asking for information regarding location, sales volume, customer mix and number of employees.
Results will show dealers how they compare to others with similar situations. Results will be used to document the size and importance of the industry for use in legislative affairs. It also will be used by the association to assess the characteristics of its constituency in order to design programs that meet its needs. Confidentiality will be insured by having a CPA firm handle the opening of the responses.

The new IRS definition of taxable gross weights for collecting the heavy vehicle use tax will become effective with the tax period beginning July l, 1985. The new definition calls for the vehicle's taxable gross weight to be based on the highest weight at which the vehicle is registered in any state at any time during the taxable period. After July l, IRS will require you to declare the taxable gross weight when loaded and certify the accuracy of the weight. In short, a certificate will have to be signed, self-certifying the maximum gross operating (loaded) weight. The new rules also require proof of payment of the heavy vehicle use tax at the time of state registration of the vehicles. Although we assume there may be more than one way to accomplish this, proof of payment generally will consist of the Schedule I (Form 2290) receipted by the IRS and returned to the taxpayer.

areas. They like to show off the beauty of natural wood. That's good for redwood and other woods as well." Bill Baugh, general manager of Snavely Forest Products in Denver, feels that Colorado is good wood country.
Snavely Forest Products is a national wholesale lumber organization based in Pittsburgh. The regional wholesalers operate autonomously but benefit on an administrative level and in part from the buying power and reputation of theparent company.
The Denver headquarters was established in October of 1982 to take advantage of the western shift in population and construction. Although 9090 of their business is in Colorado,
Snavely also sells to retailers in Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. Snavely/Denver concentrates on specialty products. The major portion of their sales comes from pine boards

and molding. They carry other specialty products including laminated beams and doors.
Baugh explained that Snavely/Denver just began carrying redwood a year ago. Their market research indicated that the demand for redwood was not being met by the competition so there seemed to be room to take advantage of the high profit margins found in sales of redwood. The results of a year's trial have livedup totheir expectations and Baugh says they plan to sell an increasing volume of redwood in the future. The company's overall growth in 1983-1984 was about 3090 and they anticipate continued growth in the coming year.
The Snavely/Denver redwood inventory consists of construction heart, B grade, clear and clear all heart. Finger-jointed redwood is another specialty product they sell.
Most of their inventory is I inch S4S boards that may or may not be milled to pattern before they reach the end user. They also sell pattern lumber in the architectural grades. Construction heart is typically 2x4,2x12 and 4x4 dimension lumber.
Redwood is still a small part of Snavely/Denver's $10 million sales total. In terms of sales, construction heart sells in the geatest volume, but B grade brings the most dollars. Snavely's customers are mostly contractororiented retail yards. Consequently, the majority of the redwood ends up in new construction.

$28.7 Million Telephone Net
The most important business tool used in the distribution of forest products is the telephone. Today there exists an extensive network of telemarketing professionals who in 1982 spent nearly $28.7 million in telephone expenses to market $7.2 billion of forest products. This vast sales network consists of the 34O North American Wholesale Lumber Association firms who participated in their recently completed 1983 Sales Survey.
The telephone expenses are evidence that the NAWLA Wholesaling Network is indeed a vital link in the chain of forest product distribution. The $28.7 million represents savings to both manufacturers and customers alike in the distribution of forest products.
Telephone expenses increased by $7.3 million from 1982 to 1983. This figure represents an average telephone cost per firm of $84,304 in 1983 compared to $59,359 in 1982.
This era of specialization has brought with it a substantial increase in the number of sales and support personnel employed by NAWLA wholesalers. In 1983, NAWLA wholesalers employed 4,345 salesper-
sons, and another 10,M2 support personnel, an increase from 1982 when there were 3,?A9 salespersons and 6,088 support personnel.
These totals represent anearly 250/o increase in sales personnel. While part of this increase can be attributed to better volume business, there is a trend towards more distribution yard and remanufacturing facilities, requiring more people to sell products in smaller unit size transactions.
The survey also revealed that more companies are utilizing credit managers and traffic managers, and in larger firms this often means additional support personnel assisting these individuals, In all, approximately 4oslo of those surveyed indicated they have a credit manager on staff, while nearly 3090 had a traffic manaser.

Woodwork Association's New Name
The National Woodwork Manufacturers Association (NWMA) is now known as the National Wood Window and Door Association (NWWDA) following a vote by members at their 58th annual meeting in Tucson, Az., last month.
The change is felt to better describe the products manufactured by the membership, eliminating the confusion created by the term woodwork which includes many products not represented by the members. The name change will be phased in during the first eight months of 1985 and become the official name in August.
Stewart Lemke, senior vice president of Norco Windows, Hawkins, Wis., and newlyelected president of the association, said "The wood window and door industry has progressed to sophisticated, engineered products, and the new name better benefits the products produced by the members.t'
"The new name will be an aid to specifiers and users of wood windows and doors seeking product information," said John Shoemaker, executive vice president. "It will help clear up a lot of misunderstanding about what NWMA represented."
Other officers elected at the Feb. 2 - 6 meeting are first vice president, William E. Hughes, Crown Door Corp., Tampa, Fl.; second vice president, John M. Chupik, Temple Products, Inc., Temple, Tx.; third vice president, David L. Farnsworth, SealRite Windolvs, Inc., Lincoln, Nb.; and John J. Stanton, treasurer, American Door Distributors, Inc., Needham, Ma.
In his outgoing remarks, the retiring president,William W. Ruddick, general manager, Simpson Door Co., Seattle, Wa., said, "We have experienced tremendous growth in 1984 with 23 new members. Add this to the 22 new firms who joined in 1983, and it is clear to see we are moving ahead and have become the voice of the wood window and door manufacturing industry. "

64th Arizona Annual Set
May 16-18 is the time of the Arizona Lumber and Builders Supply Association convention. Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson has been selected as the site for the 64th annual meeting.
An active program of convention business is scheduled as well as speakers from throughout the country who will key their offerings to the convention theme of La Ventana a la Futura (the window to the future). Members will have an opportunity to share useful ideas as well as take a look into the future of the building supply market.
Meetings will begin on the second day of the meeting with a keynote luncheon following. Additional business and educational meetings will fill the second day.
Taking advantage of the location in the Santa Catalina Mountains, the convention will offer a golf tournament, western steak fry on the desert, the second annual wholesaler's extravaganza night and a final banquet and dance.
The wholesaler's extravaganza night is being planned as a repeat of last year's party and entertainment. Designed to show appreciation, the
event was inaugurated at last year's convention and proved to be very successful. According to an association spokesman, "It's a night like no other." The western steak fry and dance held outside under the stars is a traditional way for the Arizona association to show the hospitality typical of their state.
The course which will be used for the annual golf tournament is classified as one of the most picturesque and challenging in the desert area. It is said to be a setting similar to that used for the famous "skins game" seen on NBC TV.
Delegates to the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association president's council meeting, which will also be held at Ventana Canyon Resort, are being urged to stay over for the Arizona convention. Their meeting is scheduled for May 14-15 immediately preceeding the Arizona association's meeting.
Hotel reservations should be made directly with Ventana Canyon Resort, 7000 N. Resort Dr.. Tucson. Az. 85715, according to E.J. Johnson, executive director. Convention registration is being handled by the association at their new office.

Forest Products Sales Rise
North American Wholesale
Lumber Association members distributed $7,175,527,397 in forest products in 1983, an increase of over $1.7 billion in their sales of forest products in 1982.
Figures compiled from a comprehensive annual sales survey of 3zlo wholesaler members active in 1983 showed direct sales of $4,569,759,669 representing 63.lv/o of 1983 sales. This total includes sales out of reload centers, remanufacturing plants and treated wood sales. which are arbitrarily defined by NAWLA as direct shipments. Sales out of regular distribution yards stood at $2,@5,7 67,728, or 36.3s/o of sales.
In 1982, direct shipments accounted for 67.5s/o of sales, while 32.590 of sales were out of distribution yards. In addition, although sales dollars out of remanufacturing plants remained fairly constant at $276,325,554, footage through wholesaler remanufacturers increased by lls/o to 915,229,57 0 board feet.
As the dollar value of forest products distributed by NAWLA whole-
salers increased in 1983, so did the daily investment in receivables and inventory. On June 20, 1984, NAWLA wholesalers were providing over $700,000,000 in accounts receivable and nearly $500,000,000 in distribution yard inventory, representing approximately $1,200,000,000 of financing to the forest products industry on a daily basis.
Investment in inventory by NAWLA wholesalers increased by nearly $100,000,000 over last year. This is attributed to the growing trend among distribution yard wholesalers towards a higher value product mix. In addition, NAWLA wholesalers who are 10090 direct mill shippers indicated that they have inventory investments totaling $23,000,000, which suggests they have reload center ownership or material at treating plants on a daily basis.
Trucking was the primary mode of transportation used by NAWLA wholesalers in 1983 to distribute forest products, accounting for 48.690 of all shipments; rail transportation, 28.4v/0, followed by piggyback, 12.6s/0. Deliveries bv truck out of re-
load centers represented 6.190 of forest products shipments; water transport stood at 4.30/0.
The NAWLA 1983 Sales Survey also provided a profile of the association's wholesaler membership. As of October l, 1984, 3890 were direct mill shippers; 16.490 indicated 7590 or more of their sales were out of distribution yards; 12.990 were 5090 direct mill shippers and 5090 distribution yard shippers. A nearly equal number of NAWLA wholesalers, 16.3s/o total, said that 6090 or 75s/o of their sales were direct mill shipments. Only 7.390 said that they were l009odistribution yard shippers. In all, 2ll firms operate a total of 4M distribution yards, with average annual sales per yard of nearly $6,500,m0. NAWLA wholesaler members also operate 68 remanufacturing plants, l0 more than in 1982, and ll treating plants.

Vinyl siding should continue its penetration of the remodeling and new construction markets in 1985 and throughout the remainder of the 1980s.
Crowth is expected in shipments of vinyl siding and accessories, provided the economy remains on an uPward trend and there is sufficient homebuyer demand to prevent a sharp decline in new housing, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute.

How to make more money from co-op
by Robert D. Wilcox
When you advertise, you typically use omnibus ads, ads which feature products of many suppliers. You then decide how to charge each supplier for his share of the ad. There's a right way to do that, and a wrong way.
I recently visited with six of our largest customers and found to my surprise that every one of them was doing it the wrong way, giving away co-op in huge chunks. Because they were billed by the newspaper in lines or column inches, they were trying to figure the supplier's share in those same units. Then they could multiply that by their line rate (or inch rate) and get his share in dollars. All very logical, but a disaster in practice. For two reasons:
(1) Nobody, but nobody, can accurately prorate space in either column inches or agate lines. Each is entirely too unwieldy a measure to work with.
(2) Even when you correctly measure the space that way, you don't assign a share of the headline and logotype. You wind up only with a measure of the space literally occupied by the supplier's product.
There's a simple way of measuring, though, that is easier, faster, more accurate, and which does automatically assign a prorated share of headline and logotype. Here's how it works.
First, throw away that printer's rule in agate lines. Get out your regular ruler in inches. Then follow these simple steps:
(1) Measure the width of a given supplier's portion of the ad (the part of the ad that advertises his products). Similarly, measure the depth, and multiply the width by the depth to get the square inches. In all measurements, for convenience round only to the nearest quarter inch.
(2) In the same way, measure the width and depth of the entire product portion. Make sure you include nothing but space that advertises products. Eliminate general headlines, store name, anything for which the products in the ad should each be

paying a prorata share. Multiply the width by its depth to get the square inches in the entire product portion.
(3) Divide I by 2 to get the supplier's percentage of the product space.
(4) Multiply the cost of the entire ad by that percentage. That automatically determines his cost of the space occupied by his products, plus his prorata share of all non-product copy.
One of the largest chains on the East Coast adopted this method recently. They found that it cut in half the time they used to spend figuring claims. And they also found that only two of their hundreds of suppliers declined to pay prorata share of nonproduct copy.
If you would like a form for easily making this computation, with stepby-step instructions for completing the form, just drop a line, and I'll be happy to send it to you.
It's one thing to decide not to spend co-op dollars that are offered to you. But, once you've spent the money to do the advertising, you sure want to claim everything you can. This is one easy way to make sure you do.
(If you would like the form offered, contsct the author at Armstrong World Industries, Inc., P.O. Box 3a01, Lancaster, Pa. 17604-ed.)

Big Trading Firm's New Entry
Plateau Forest Products. Inc. is the name selected for a new trading firm in Albuquerque, N.M., set to open in early April. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Forest City Trading, Portland, Or., which in turn is owned by Forest City Enterprises, Cleveland, Oh.
The president of the new firm is Wayne Mosby, Steve Kline is sales manager. Mosby previously had worked for Cascade Empire in Portland, one of eleven sister companies, including Plateau, owned by Forest City Trading. The others are Western International Forest Products, American International Forest Products, Buckeye Pacific, Olympic Industries, Tampa International Forest Products, Birmingham International Forest Products, Richmond International Forest Products. Seaboard International Forest Products and Viking Forest Products.
Marketing plans call for Plateau Forest Products to sell a full range of forest products, with some emphasis on Southwest, inland species and SPF, targeting industrial and dealer customers. Sales will be to the entire country, concentrating on Southwestern and Southeastern areas.
B-C May Buy Publishers Paper
Boise Cascade has acknowledged that it is "discussing the possible purchase of the newsprint and forest products sections" of the Times Mirror Company, which includes Publishers Forest Products, based in Lake Oswego, (Portland) Oregon.
Last fall, Times Mirror, the Los Angeles, Ca.,-based publishing giant, hired Morgan-Stanley Co., New York, to find a buyer for its Publishers Paper Co. subsidiary.
While the Times-Mirror had a record profit in 1984, it suffered a $14 million write off due to its Oregon City, Or., paper plant plus other losses incurred in federal timber contract buy-backs. It is expected that any sale of the unit would include a long term agreement to assure a continuing supply of newsprint for Times-Mirror's chain of newspapers.
No possible sale price for the units has been made public at this point in the negotiations.

Construction Contracting Up 2o/o
Contracting for new construction advanced 290 in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $215.1 billion, reports McGraw-Hill Information Systems. For all of 1984, their Dodge Index averaged 149, a new annual high.
"Gains in homebuiding and public works construction during the opening month of 1985 were largely offset by a decline in contracting for nonresidential building," according to Ceorge A. Christie, chief economist for F. W. Dodge. "Following last year's ?As/o surge of commercial and industrial building," he said, "January's shift could be signaling a change of direction in favor of homebuilding for the year ahead."
"The housing market appears to be turning around," Christie pointed out, "but we haven't yet seen the response to lower mortgage rates that everyone is waiting for. With January's gain confined to multi-family building, the interest rate sensitive single-family side of the housing market is still where it was several months ago. Recovery won't be sustainable until one-family building is on the way up," he said.

Purchase of seven plants from Bird Inc. has been completed by Genstar Corp., San Francisco, Ca., for approximately $50 million.
Asphalt roofing plants in Portland, Or.; Wilmington and Martinez, Ca.;Shreveport, La., and Charleston, S.C.; roofing granule facilities in Rancho Cordova, Ca., and Glenwood, Ar., and a fiberglass mat plant and granule facilities adjacent to the roofing plant in Charleston are included in the acquisition.
The acquisition gives Genstar the capacity to produce about 2.2 million tons of asphalt shingles per year, nearly double its present capacity. Adding these plants to those already owned in Arkansas, California, Georgia, lllinois, Minnesota and Texas, Genstar becomes one of the larger producers of asphalt roofing in the U.S. The company also is one of only three roofing manufacturers with granule manu facturing capacity.
Through its U.S. distribution centers, Bird will continue marketing many of the roofing products that will be manufactured by Genstar under various Bird trade names. The plants will also manufacture roofing under Genstar's Flintkote brand name. The Bird operations are now part of Genstar Roofing Products Co., a subsidiary headquartered in lrving, Tx.

New Oregon Plywood Siding
A new type of plyrvood siding being produced in Oregon is creating interest among building material retailers and builders.
Rated by the American Plywood Association as textured siding, 5-ply is a unique product, according to E. H. "Herb" Robbins, developer of the process. "To our knowledge, it is manufactured no place else in the world," he says.
Called the siding panel of the future, the oriented strandboard solid<ore plywood product is a 5-ply composite panel. It differs from common plywood siding in that the veneer layers are separated by blankets of resinblended wood fibers. In addition. the panels are compressed in a one-step process at higher press temperatures than those used in the production of common plywood.
As a result of this production technique, which Oregon Strand Board Co. took five years to develop, the wood fibers become securelv bonded to the veneer surfaces ani fill alt knotholes, core gaps and voids. The result is a dimensionally stable, weather-resistant, solid+ore panel of uniform thickness with high structural values.
The 5-ply siding is available in
cedar or Douglas fir. If a natural rough texture appearance such as knotty cedar is desired, either transparent or semi{ransparent stain can be applied. Fir siding also may be stained. Either product can be painted if a solid color is desired.
Because of the superior bond of plys created by compressing the mat at higher temperatures and pressures for longer press times than is normal for plyrvood, the siding reportedly does not delaminate. In addition, a glue line is separately applied on the veneer surfaces and bonded by heat and compression to the resin-blended fibers.
Production of 5-ply has been aided by the financial backing of the JeldWen Corp. in Klamath Falls, Or. To date, they have invested approximately $2 million in the operation.
Oregon Strand Board, located in Brownsville, also produces APA rated sturdi-floor and sheathing, both oriented strandboard. The company uses an unusual technology developed by Dr. Tom Maloney at Washington State University. Glen Becker, general manager, believes that his is the only plant using this electrostatic orientation of strands. Because it is more precise than mechanical orientation. smaller strands can be
used and arranged, in any direction desired.
Recently incorporated, the company has on its board of directors W. B. Early (president of Jeld-Wen) as president; Becker, vice president and general manager; Noel F. Wicks, vice president, sales manager and secretary; Norma Gradwohl, office manager, and Richard R. Wendt. Robbins is chairman of the board.
Willamette Takeover Pact
Agreement has been made by a group of Willamette Industries Inc., Portland, Or., shareholders to take no action which would further "any threatened or proposed takeover" of the company, although reportedly there is no such attempt in the offing.
Representing about 4090 ofthe total shareholders, the group, which includes William Swindells Jr., president and c.e.o., agreed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing not to take any action unless it has been approved by a majority of three designated representatives, Maurie D. Clark, Samuel S. Wheeler and Swindells. all Willamette directors.

al duties as fork lift operators, etc.
The reasons are many, but the most important from an economic standpoint is cost. When a driver doesn't drive, the truck is idle and not productive. The more a fully loaded truck is driven, the more effectively the company's vehicles are profitably completing delivered sales.
The major down time for the driver should be unloading at the job site and re-loading in the yard. Neither function should take, on an average, more than l5 minutes to execute. (Hand placement of shingles, wallboard, etc. at the job site are an exception to this.) In general, a driver won't have much trouble off loading in l5 minutes per stop.
In order to insure productivity from drivers and trucks, the dispatcher must be supported by a company policy which generates timely order picking, staging and pre-loading. This practice is not difficult, but it requires discipline and a policy set by management. An official position (like orders received in the morning will be delivered in the afternoon and orders received in the afternoon will be delivered the morning of the next working day) will allow yard people to pull, stage and preload in an orderly fashion.
More important, it should never take more than 15 minutes to load a truck once it is spotted along side a pre-staged load. Our company has run numerous evaluations on how many stops one man can pull, preJoad and stage per eight hour shift. While it varies slightly from study to study, it is fairly consistent that on average one man can process one stop every 15 minutes.
Telling people within the company how
delivery is to be handled is not difficult and it does have a definite bearing on their effectiveness in serving the customer. It is just as important to tell your customers what they may expect from your delivery service. In short, an external delivery policy posted for all to see and use as a guide to when and what they can expect is most important. A simple sign listing policies (similar to those below) will do the job.
o Delivery is free within a certain radius Monday - Friday (except holidays).
r Hand or machine placement of shingles & wallboard by quote.
o Orders received by l0 a.m. are delivered in the afternoon. After l0 a.m. orders are delivered in morning of the next working day or later if specified.
r Back orders will be substituted where possible or cancelled.
You'll be amazed if you adopt the two postures expounded in this article. First, you'll see how effective your dispatcher will become once you tell him, other employees and your customers what is expected. The second revelation will be how much cheaper it is to substitute for a2" x 10" x20" with a 2 " x 10" x 22" instead of back ordering and delivering another time, and how appreciative your customer will be to have spelled out for him what it is the company will provide in the way of delivery services.
"Management Sumeys the Block Hole of Delivery," divided into threeseparale dollor volume manuals, under S2 million, $2-5 million and over $5 million, is available for 545 from Builders Express Inc., 11550 Plono Rd., Dollas, Tx. 75243. Attention: Wally Lynch. Please specify volume desired.

Design ldeas Forum
IIHE first three in a year long ser- I ies of Design Idea Forums for the West have been held by the Koppers Company at three Southern California locations. The initial one, in Los Angeles, drew more than 450; the forum in San Diego over 130, while the Anaheim forum (shown here) had an attendance exceeding 200. All three were held in January.
The purpose of the forum is to show Koppers' current design ideas plus product information. Exhibits of their products and services are also presented. Other meetings are set for San Francisco and Sacramento in May; Portland, Or., and Seattle, Wa., in mid-summer with Denver, Co., and Phoenix, Az., forums set for this fall. The last such series was held in 1980.
Following a presentation of products and services, a panel of eight company experts fielded questions from the audience during a question and answer session. The by-invitation-only audience consisted of major design firm principals and other experts in the building construction process.
Three new product areas from Koppers were featured: the Dricon fire-retardant and decay resistant process; Rx insulation, a rigid phenolic foam; and Dion polyester for use with fiber reinforced plastic construction material applications.

One of the western flrms active in helping educate their retail customers is Sequoia Supply, the building products distributor based in Wilsonville, Or. At the meeting shown here, their Orange, Ca., branch teamed up with the Southern California Andersen Corp. sales rep, Bill Coady, to present a joint product workshop.
It included basic training type product information, pricing, comparison with the competition and a range of other topics to sharpen sales skills at the showroom floor level. Beginning at I p.m.,instructor Coady and Sequoia staffers Jim May and Bob Bernard explained the finer points of the Andersen Permashield casements, awnings, windows and patio doors. After a break for dinner, the class concluded at 8 p.m. The semi-annual training sessions are augmented with Saturday and evening consumer presentations by Andersen and Sequoia upon dealer request.
Eight major displays were used in the temporary classroom set up in a corner of Sequoia's Orange warehouse. Audio-visual training devices reinforced the live instruction.

Oak Holds Lead In Tables
The bellwether Western Furniture Market confirms the Carolina trends to softer appearances, less dominant
grain character and more fluid lines.
Oak was still the leading wood although it dropped from 34.590 in January, 1983, to 28.6V0 in January,

1985. More white oak, often with a quarter figure, characterized the table selection. The result was a more restrained, comfortable look to complement smaller sized rooms.
The close-grain cherry, maple, birch and western alder were slightly ahead of January 1983, but the major change was in wider use of mahoganY and walnut as well as yew, rosewood, teak and ramin. Burls at 890 remained a favored treatment with the inviting "touch me" look, according to Dave McCullam whose Northwest Hardwood staff made the surveY of over ll33 different occasional table presentations.
Another major change was in the painted (enameled or polyester) category. The jump from 5.590 to 13.890 in two years does not include the numerous table groups in which only a portion was painted for. contrast with natural wood finish. Some were painted on woodbase boards or PIYwood, but others used solid lumber such as alder, maple, gumwood or poplar. The embossed or Printed grain tables have dropped substantially, while the all plastic units showed a minor drop from 4.3v/o to 3.30/0. Both categories have been replaced with more glass, metal and marble tables. more wicker, rattan and bamboo units and more fabric and leather treatments. In total, the "other than wood" tables accounted for 250/o of all tables surveyed.
The comparison with the Carolina casegoods study conducted twice yearly by the Fine Hardwoods/American Walnut Association showed many similarities, though oak accounted for only 22.90/o of the total showroom presentations. Cherry, and hickory-pecan were more widely used in casegoods. Conversely, burls dominated more tables than they did in the larger casegoods suites.

The maximum width of the carrier is 27 " to pass through standard 30" doorways.

European-Styled Dishwasher
The Monterey, which has been added to KitchenAid's current dishwasher line,is specifically designed to complement the European-styled cabinets being used in today's new and remodeled kitchens.
Styled to provide a sleek contemporary look, it offers a triple filtration system with patented soil collector and a stainless steel hard food disposer which reportedly removes food from the water so it cannot be washed back onto the dishware. The special water heating system is said to assure water hot enough to cut through fats and tough food soils, even if the incoming water is as low as 120 degrees F.
Other features include a high capacity wash pump with a 4-way wash arm and middle wash arm to deliver strong up-and-down cleaning action as well as adjustable racks, dividers and energy saving drying options.
Cedar Look A-Like Shingle
A wood fiber roofing product from Masonite Corp. is said to be almost indistinguishable from the real thing with a heavily textured surface which is said to weather in color like cedar.
Made from natural wood fibers compressed under extreme pressure and molded into 12 " x 48" shingles, Woodruf is said to have all the advantages of natural wood, while eliminating many of the drawbacks.
Because the product is 5090 denser than natural wood, it is able to withstand extreme temperature, hail and high winds. Backed by a longterm limited warranty, its performance lifetime is reportedly as good or better than most standard and dimensional fiberglass and organic shingles.

Cypress: pretender to hardwood title
YPRESS is a paradox in the umber industry in that it is considered a hardwood when it really isn't.
Long grouped and manufactured with hardwoods because it grows with them, cypress, despite popular belief, is really a softwood. The confusion is intensified by the fact that cypress is graded under the rules of both the National Hardwood Lumber Association and the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association. All types of cypress may be graded according to the NHLA rules, but ony tidewater red cypress comes under the jurisdiction of the southern group.
Cypress lumber is well known for its long life and ability to hold paint. Part of its reputation for being one of the most durable woods in America results from the heartwood being naturally resistant to decay and termites. Sapwood does not have the same resistance, although it is extremely durable.
Cypress doesn't normally check or warp. It is one of the most economical woods to paint. Official tests of paint retention qualities put it in a group of specially selected woods which can hold paint longer than most and offer maximum resistance against damage from the elements. Even without the protection of paint, cypress will last for centuries, acquiring a lovely natural color.
Cypress is widely used for both interior and exterior trim, paneling, doors, siding and porch flooring. The lower grades make excellent fencing boards.
Cypress grows mainly in the southern portion of the United States. It is usually found in an area extending from southern Delaware along the Atlqntic cnastline throush all of Flor-
ida, into the Gulf States and up the Mississippi Valley to Indiana.
Cypress roots like water. For this reason it is often found in swamps, river bottoms and sloughs. Much of the tidewater red cypress was inaccessible until helicopter harvesting developed.
Cypress is contradictory in its growth habits in that handsome trees are often found growing in very dry situations in the parks of many cities. Cypress also is one of only two softwoods found in America which shed foliage in the fall like hardwoods. Larch, also known as tamarack, is the other deciduous softwood.
Pecky cypress which is valued by architects for rustic wall paneling, trim, false beams and special woodwork is a grade of cypress. It has
many elongated, roundish pits or cavities. These "pecks" are caused by a peculiar fungus which attacks some logs. Pathologists have studied the fungus and its habits, but are uncertain of its origin or life cycle. The fungus attack ceases when the lumber is cut and seasoned. While not as strong as other cypress, it is equally durable.
The amount of pecky cypress available commercially is small. Most cypress lumber is straight, sound, fine grained and beautiful. Three sets bf grades are used to cover the requirements for cypress since it is used in industry as well as construction. These grades are yard, factory and structural.
Cypress knees are used by manufacturers of novelties for items such as vases and souvenirs. The knee is a strange conelike growth developed from the root system. It seems to be of value in supporting the tree and aerates the root system by carrying oxygen to it. The wood in the knee is very soft, light and punky.
Story at a Glance
Cypress becomes a hardwood by associalion. .graded under NHLA rules...extremely durable...prized for use both inside and out.
Most cypress is felled above the swelling at the base of the trunk since the wood from this area is often inferior. This swelling is common among swamp grown species and offers extra support to roots growing in mud and water.
Although there are only two sPecies, cypress is known by numerous names. The Taxodium distichum species is identified as gulf cypress, Louisiana red cypress, tidewater red cypress, yellow cypress and white cypress, to nzrme a few. The second species of cypress recognized by the Forest Service is Toxodium distichum var. hutans. It is commonly known as pond cypress, but because it is found very seldom and grows very small, it has no commercial value.

Winning sales with redwood deck contests
l&W REDWOOD of El Cajon, lfSorrento Valley and Vista, Ca., has developed a winning formula for redwood deck sales.
Their annual redwood deck contests have paid off big. These promotions have increased redwood sales and generated a great deal of recognition for the San Diego area lumber dealer.

Clyde Jennings of J&W emphasizes that it is best to keep the contest simple. In their contests, entrants provide photos and a description of their project. Ten finalists are chosen from the entry photographs. Then judges inspect the finalists' decks in person.
J&W's contest is open to everyone. At first, it might seem unfair to have contractors and do-it-yourselfers competing against each other, but Jennings says this isn't so. "You'd be surprised at the work of some of the do-it-yourselfers," he adds. "In fact, last year the winning deck was built by a do-it-yourselfer. " The project included a deck around a pool and a hot tub, as well as an overhead shade structure.
