Fight Fat

;T IS VERY NICE to report that practically Ieveryone we talk to of late is still optimistic about this year's business conditions. It's exciting to hear of delayed plans being dusted off and implemented and of new programs put into motion.

But inherent in all this activity is the threat that the business bloat so painfully lost will creep back onto the corporate bones. Most companies operatingtoday are doing soonly because they thinned down when business declined and have run lean and mean since. Just as surely as any diet is painful, there is equal certainty that fat once lost can seemingly reappear over night before its unattractive encroachment is detected.

Organizations of all kinds and sizes are susceptible. The most obvious example of organizational overweight is, of course, the federal government. It is a disgusting spectacle of spending and staffing at its most extreme.

Companies fail of their own excesses long

before governments do. Yet, the problem is simply one of degree. It often starts slowly, then expansion gets mixed up with ego and pretty soon people, places and programs have acquired the profile of Fatty Arbuckle. Like sin itself, the entering phase is devilishly simple.

Balanced in all this cost consciousness must be the realization that the business demands of 1984 are far different than those of 1982. The far greater level of business activity requires a similarly enlarged company to serve the new business and realize the full profit potential in it. It's a neat trick if you can grow just enough.

Successful companies will go forward boldly to get their share of increased volumes of business. The best of the lot will keep a sharp lookout for corporate corpulence, knowing full well that company coronaries often follow the business bloat that develops in expansionary situations.

Home owners ? redwood

AN'S LOVE affair with the beauty and durability of California redwood began when the Indians used trees felled by wind, lightningor old age tomake dugout canoes and boards for crude shelter.

In 1769 a Spanish expedition recorded the grandeur of the majestic trees which they called palo colorado because of the red color. Commercial lumbering of redwood dates back to the l8th centurywhen Spanish settlers, after using redwood timbers to build the mission at Santa Clara, found redwood useful for aqueducts, vats and carved furniture.

In 1809 the Russians built Fort Ross on the California coast from redwood. As the West became more populated with the Gold Rush of '49, redwood became a popular building material, especially in San Francisco. From California the use of redwood spread throughout the nation and the world with billions of board feet of lumber shipped from San Francisco and nearby Mendocino County ports.

Today, as evidenced by the handsome homes pictured across the page, redwood continues to be a prime choice of homebuilders across the country.

Considering that all commercial redwood originates in one area, a 500 mile strip of land along the Pacific coast, many marvel at the apparently unending supply. Credit for the quantity of high quality redwood available goes to the lumber industry which

practices reforestation and efficient manufacturing techniques.

In addition to fostering the continued supply of redwood, they have insured improved quality and productivity of redwood timberlands so that all grades of California redwood including clear all heart remain in good supply. With dedication to forest management, a sustained yield (harvest matching rate of growth) is maintained. Prompt restocking of the land after harvest, thinning, fertilizing and good fire protection assure a continuous supply of redwood.

For example, Simpson Timber Co. has helped pioneer a tissue culture process that uses cuttings to produce exact genetic duplicates of superior parent trees. Cuttings are shot from high branches of selected trees with a rifle, then used to produce clones which reproduce the superior characteristics of the parent trees, thus insuring quality and productivity.

At Louisiana-Pacific's Clotilde Merlo Forest Research Center and Tree Nursery redwood trees are started from seed each spring. These seedlings are planted November through February with a planter being able to put 1200 to 1700 seedlings in the ground on an average eight hour day. Survival rate is 8690. LP also sponsors the Tree Enterprise program to encourage good management by private landowners.

Georgia-Pacific plants over 2.3 million genetically superior seedlings each year on its 200,000 acres of timberland to aid in the natural regeneration of redwood. Grown in the company's nursery at Fort Bragg, Ca., the eight to ten inch, six month old trees are hand planted in soil and climate conditions identical to the "parent" or seed trees. This method ensures maximum survival, usually around 9890.

Milling of redwood requires precise handling with as many:rs 45 designated and special purpose grades of lumber cut from one tree. Pacific Lumber Co., which has an annual production capacity of 70 million board feet at its

large log redwood mill, is said to be the largest single manufacturer of clear all heart redwood, supplying the mill from its own 167,000 acres of managed forest land. They recently renovated the mill, installing new equipment and overhauling old equipment to insure their production capability.

At historic Fort Bragg, an important wood manufacturing center since 1884, acquired by Georgia-Pacific in 1973, extensive renovations have made it possible to expand capacity while reducing raw material requirements.

Nature's gift of a wood which is both beautiful and durable is being handled well in both the forest and manufacturing process to insure that retailers will have ample supplies to meet the needs of all those homeowners who love redwood.

Redwood marketing: a profitable approach

lN 1916, the redwood lumber manulfacturers joined together for the first time to promote redwood products at the Panama-Pacific Exposition which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and introduced products from the western United States to the rest of the world.

This event marked the beginning of the California Redwood Association as well as the beginning of a cohesive redwood marketing plan. At the time of the exposition redwood sold for

about $12 per thousand board feet while pine and fir were selling for $34 per thousand.

Since then, redwood's unique properties have been identified, graded, advertised, publicized and promoted. As a result, terms like "redwood decks," "redwood custom homes," and "redwood interiors" are familiar to all segments of the house building/homebuying markets. Redwood is a favorite material of architects. Builders love it for the curb appeal it gives their houses; and lumber retailers realize a heftier profit from a redwood sale than they do from a sale of other materials.

All this is the result of successful marketing. Dealers can capitalize from it by identifying themselves as redwood sales centers.

We occasionally get calls from architects, builders and homeowners who are looking for redwood in their area. These are customers without a merchant. They know redwood is the right product for their deck or fence or siding or paneling because they have seen CRA ads or publicity in magazines and newspapers or on television. But there is no one in their area saying, "This is where you buy redwood."

If CRA does one thing this year, we

are going to help more lumber dealers identify themselves as redwood dealers. There are three things a redwood dealer needs to do:

(l) Advertise-Dealers should tell customers they are the redwood suppliers in the area.

CRA will help. We will provide ad art for newspapers and magazines. We will supply radio scripts for ads. We will supply slides for television advertising. We can offer ideas for promotions like deck contests and clinics. Call or write Chris Grover of our office and we will help you with your advertising campaign.

(2) Sell projects not boardslumber isn't very glamorous, except to those of us in the industry.

Dealers have to sell customers on the idea of a luxurious outdoor living environment, or the exciting transformation that occurs when a home is remodeled with redwood. It is important to sell projects in advertising, promotions and on the sales floorprojects that customers can relate to. CRA literature can help. We print 48

cations from luxury interior paneling to fence boards. Applications can be as modest as bender board edging for gardens or as dramatic as siding for low-rise commercial buildings. Any product with this range of applications requires sales expertise.

For merchants, redwood represents a high profit margin. Redwood's durability, stability and versatility are qualities that help clinch big ticket sales. Employee awareness of redwood's properties and advantages will increase sales and boost profits. Of course, it's great if every employee has had hands on experience building houses, fences and decks, but that isn't necessary to sell redwood siding or recommend the proper grade of redwood for deck joists.

Redwood meets the needs of many different building projects because there are several redwood grades and products. Basically, there are three questions the sales person should ask to help a customer choose the right grade of redwood for a project:

(1) Do you want luxury redwood that is free of knots or would you like the rustic look of knotty redwood?

Redwood architectural grades are clear and well suited to fine paneling or siding. Garden grades of redwood have a rugged knotty look that works well for decks, rustic siding and garden applications. Often the answer to this question is a matter of design and taste.

(2) Do you need the durability of redwood heartwood or can you use a

grade with streaks of lighter colored sapwood?

The dark cinnamon-colored heartwood has a natural resistance to decay and insects. Customers can find all heartwood lumber in either the archi tectural or garden gpades. Redwood with streaks of sapwood can be more economical in uses where heartwood is not required.

(3) What degree of stability does your project need? Redwood is available either certified kiln dried, air-seasoned, or unseasoned.

Redwood is naturally more stable than other softwoods. Certified kilndried redwood is virtually pre-shrunk

-suitable for the finest applications and demanding detail work. Where shrinkage isn't a problem you can save money by using unseasoned redwood.

By asking these questions, a salesperson can help the customer choose the proper grade of redwood to do the job right. For more employee training materials, write: Chris Grover, California Redwood Association, 591 Redwood Highway, Mill Valley, Ca. 9494t.

common. They understand their market and have an accurate sense of their customers needs. Successful dealers have creative ideas about advertising, promoting and packaging redwood products. This usually starts with the theory that redwood must be sold as projects not individual boards. A third quality they share is their ability to establish reputations as the source for redwood in their locale. Here's a view of marketing plans for redwood garden grades from three merchants in very different parts of the West:

Redwood Hawaii is a business that has tripled its sales in its second year. Art Manzo, the owner, explained that Redwood Hawaii sells to retailers and contractors and distributes modular decking to builders and homeowners. Manzo anticipates an increasing interest in the modular deck business.

which includes selling pre-cut deck kits, building complete decks, or building deck understructures and letting customers do the finish work.

Working with a local home builder, Redwood Hawaii is offering deck packages as an option for home buyers. Decks are financed along with the house. This way homeowners see the deck as part of the house and it eliminates the lag time between purchasing a home and feeling that a deck is affordable. To promote this idea, Manzo produced a literature package to sell the modular decking. Using California Redwood Association literature, the package includes deck idea booklets and plans for the modular decks Redwood Hawaii sells.

Manzo places approximately 12 display ads per year in local newspapers and supplements this with continuous classified advertising. Redwood Hawaii has an aggressive sales force

that will even knock on doors to sell the modular decks.

Hawaii is predominantly a heartwood market. Redwood Hawaii stocks clear all heart, B grade, construction heart and merchantable heart.

O'Malley's is a chain of building and home supply stores in the rapidly expanding southwestern market. Perry Steinhoff of O'Malley's described the Phoenix area where they have 9 of their 19 stores as a boom town. "Construction took off about the first of January in 1983 and is still going strong."

to a redwood deck he built in Phoenix seven years ago which is holding up quite well. "We are working to change people's ideas by pointing out that redwood decks don't reflect and

absorb the heat as concrete slabs will."

Steinhoff explains that the advertising for redwood decks departs from O'Malley's usual advertising. Using the back cover of their advertising brochure they show color pictures of decks.

"We aren't selling redwood by advertising boards at a specific price per foot. First we sell the romance of a deck and outdoor living-then we show them the price, which is competitive." To help customers accept redwood decks as belonging in Phoenix, O'Malley's has developed deck kits and used local names for the kits. They have the Scottsdale deck and the Carefree deck and others.

Steinhoff is convinced they will get the ball rolling and when they do the demand will be strong. After all, where else can you find perfect outdoor living nine months of the year?

Redwood manufacturer wraps it up

ITECOGNIZING the importance

JIto dealers of prompt shipments of lumber with the least amount of damage possible, The Pacific Lumber Co., a ll5 year old redwood manufacturer located in Scotia, Ca., has established this type of service as their goal.

It seems to be working with their sales for 1983 showing substantial increases over l98l and 1982. Weekly production at Palco is estimated at 3 million board feet per week with current inventory of 9 million feet of dry redwood uppers and 50 million feet behind that on sticks, enough to guarantee ready delivery of any order.

To insure that this material reaches the dealer and the consumer in pristine condition, the company takes special precautions to protect its redwood against handling and shipping damage.

All kiln dried uppers are compiled into pretallied units containing about 1,750 board feet in measure. A special lumber press squares the sides and ends of the units and applies a card-

board cover for protection. Eighteen to 20 of these units are then loaded on a truck allowing for highly mixed loads of redwood and Douglas fir uppers with redwood commons.

One truck can be loaded in about 20 minutes, giving Palco the capability to load over 20 trucks per day. "We like our unit system because we don't want to see our customers' lumber damaged during shipment. Truckers like it because they can get in and out of Scotia in a hurry," says Tom Malarkey, executive

Story at a Glance

vice president. All orders are pre-assembled before the truck arrives.

The lumber units are often strapped together into "multi-units." Each multi-unit consists of four or five individual units and is assembled with 2x4s between the steel bands and the lumber for additional protection. Palco is able to load shipments more quickly with this procedure, using large forklifts. The multi-units make a more stable load and can be cut apart for unloading with small forklifts.

Because Palco conditions each kiln charge an extra 24 hours to remove all the stresses in the lumber, the company is meticulous with the handling and packaging of its products. It maintains covered storage and loading areas to keep the lumber dry. Special attention is given to all of their lumber which includes 1 ", l-l/4", 2" and 4x4 redwood and l" and2" ftr,

As one Palco employee states, "We like to eliminate problems before they happen and increase our shipping efficiency by keeping our lumber all

THE S]TIARI MAils PIYWOOD?

Yep. In fact, L-P-Waferwood@ does plywood jobs even better than plywood.

It cuts and nails more like solid wood. It splinters less. It's smooth and uniform (no knots, core voids or patches). It's a great sheathing and itt epA approved for Sturd-I-Floor@ construction.

But the best thing about L-P-Waferwood is this. It costs less than plylvood. A lot less.

No wonder it's the smart man's plywood.

Crown ship bring

-fINCE man carried his first stick ilof lumber, the trend to larger shipments has continued. The recent arrival in Southern California of a4.l million B.F. load of Canadian lumber -a record for Crown-marked not only another confirmation of the pattern but served as a reference point for some major changes among the shippers.

Historically, Crown Zellerbach's wood products division in Long Beach, Ca., received lumber from its subsidiary Crown Zellerbach Canada. But last year CZ sold its Canadian subsidiary to Fletcher Challenge, Ltd., a major New Zealand conglomerate that changed the name of the Vancouver, British Columbia, property to Crown Forest Industries. Included in the transaction were the shipping company and manufacturing operations as well as timberlands. Despite the ownership changes, Crown Forest Industries is continuing the 25 year pattern of regularly delivering lumber to Southern California by ship. It is the only firm with scheduled lumber ships, although a number of other firms use ocean barges to import Canadian lumber. Among the other major importers are Fremont Forest Products and the Ed Fountain Lumber Co. Other area wholesalers bring in smaller quantities of lumber.

Also for the past 25 years, "Crown" lumber sales in Southern California have been thru Far West Fir Sales Co. of Huntington Beach. The well known trade term "Crown Lot Red" will continue under CFI which will still paint their logo on the side of the package and end-seal each piece of lumber in red paint. The

practice not only provides a visual trademark but also helps prevent the lumber from checking.

As the lumber is unloaded it is transferred by a half dozen or so forklifts into an adjacent dockside inventory that can run in excess of 15 million B.F. of lumber. Their terminal is at Pier A, Berth 6, in the Port of Long Beach.

Packaged to length, the lifts range from 8 to ?A feet in length. Either Douglas fir or hemlock, the shipments include dimension lumber, boards and timbers. No random length packaging is done, and all packages have attached stickers.

Story at a Glance

Some new names in the Canada/California connection. .distribution patterns expected to remain unchanged...huge ships carry multi-million dollar car. goes ol lumber and paper.

Far West Fir Sales has nine sales people to sell the lumber to retail and industrial accounts. Most is sold in Southern California, with an occasional lot sold in Nevada and Arizona. Now in its 30th year in business, Far West uses trucks to transport lumber from dockside, though some firms send their own trucks to pick up the lumber.

Some domestic lumber is received by rail and barge for inclusion in the dockside inventory. A small amount of the lumber is taken to Far West's eight acre facility in Huntington Beach for remanufacture. Company president John Weston estimates the inventory turns every 30 to 45 days.

The receiving, unloading and dispersal of the lumber is but one step in the long chain of distribution. It is estimated that the lumber, which began as standing trees on Canada's Vancouver Island and other mainland forests, travels as much as 2500 miles before reaching its final destination to become the homes and other products Americans use every day.

Evans Products Execs Resign

Five executives and a director of Evans Products Co., Portland, Or., have resigned, prior to the approaching move of the company in April to Miami, Fl.

Donald Desimini, executive vice president, finance and operations; L. L. Wygal, executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Richard E. Kent, vice president, secretary and general counsel, resigned saying they were not able effectively to discharge their duties under Victor Posner, chairman of the ailing building products and transportation leasing company.

These resignations, effective in May and June, were followed by the resignation of Gerald A. Parsons, vice president, corporate relations. Jerry F. Colson, vice president and controller, has moved his planned departure up one month to May 31. Paul E. Bragdon, president of Reed College, Portland, and a member of the Evans board since 1973, resigned effective Feb. 2, 1984. Samuel J. Robinson, former Publishers Paper Co. chairman, also has resigned from the board.

The resignations reportedly were brought about by the bringing of several members of the Posner family into the company. Posner last month took the additional post of c.e.o. His son, Steven Posner, is vice chairman; his brother, Bernard Posner, director, and his daughter, Tracy Posner, a recent college graduate, fills the newly created job of vice president, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer.

The bringing of inexperienced family members into the firm at high salaries reportedly annoyed long time Evans employees.

Computer System Briefing

A briefing session on the National Housewares Manufacturers Association (NHMA) program to adopt the Eagle computerized purchase order transmission system was held March 14 in Los Angeles, Ca.

The system will be available to exhibitors at the April NHMA International Housewares Exposition.

Developed by the American Hardware Manufacturers Association, the system enables manufacturers and their customers to pass and acknowledge orders and related data through a computer.

"The Eagle program has grown

over the past year," said Ronald Fippinger, managtng director of the NHMA, "with an increased number of housewares and hardware manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers becoming part of this cost effective, straight forward system of streamlining orders."

L-P Forms Venture Subsidiary

Louisiana-Pacific Corp., Portland, Or., has formed a new subsidiary, Louisiana-Pacific Ventures Corp., which will join venture capitalist Jacques B. Nichols in a partnership, First Source Capital Fund Ltd., to invest in start-up high-tech companies.

"We're looking forward to being a key participant in technological advances as they occur," said Harry Merlo, chairman and president of L-P. The company reportedly is venturing into the investment opportunities directly or indirectly related to the lumber business, including computerized industrial machinery, systems controls and laser technology.

Evadna Lynn, a Merrill Lynch vice president who analyzes forest products companies, says "It's a way to put their cash to work creatively. It will use a very small portion of the company's cash, and it keeps them abreast of technological developments related to the industry."

The company, according to Lynn, will receive a cash windfall approaching $ZSO million in the next year or so. They expect to realize a net gain of $65 million from the reported sale of their stake in National Gypsum Corp. In addition the company has $190 million in receivables due from the federal government for seizure of 27,W acres of Louisiana-Pacific land for the Redwood National Park in California.

It Doesn't Add Up

More do-it-yourself finishing of new homes along with innovative financing may be the solution to the problem of only one family in three being financially able to buy a new home today.

To buy a median priced new home at $82,000, a family needs an income of $31,765 for the 30 year, fixed-rate mortgage with a 590 down payment, but the median familyincome todayis only $23,430, according to U.S. News & World Report.

AFFORDABLE . EASY TO APPLY . VERSATILE

SIZES

Pacific Redwood Interior Paneling is a tongue-andgroove board and is available in 1/2" x 6" and 1/2" x8" nominal widths. Dressed dimensions are shown on the cross-sectional diagram printed here.

The 6" and B" widths are available in 3'to 20' random lengths, tape-tied in one-length bundles. Protective paper-wrapped bundles are available for a small charge

GRADES

Both widths are available in Clear All Heart grade, vertical grain, as shown in the photograph on the reverse side, or in Clear grade, vertical grain as in the photographs on this page. (Clear mixed grain also available.)

APPLICATION

Nailing. Nailto furring strips or blocking spaced 2' O.C. or less. Use 4d finish nails for blind nailing through the tongue or for face nailing (interior only). Colored nails can eliminate the need for countersinking and filling when face nailing.

Gluing. Pacific Redwood Interior Paneling can be easily applied to flat surfaces using common construction adhesives. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's directions. Finishing. For the ultimate in a carefree interior, use the saw-textured side unfinished. The surface color will gradually darken with age, and then stabilize.

Transoarent and semi-transoarent f inishes work best applied to the saw-textured side. In areas subject to soiling, a clear sealer or low-luster lacquer should be applied to protect the beauty of the wood. These frnishes are economical and easy to apply. In areas exposed to moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms, use a polyurethane or alkyd resin sealer. This provides protection and a washable surface.

Penetrating oil-based stains are recommended if other tones and hues are desired, or if the surfaced smooth side is exoosed.

IN 1984 the home center industry will Icontinue to accelerate change as it did in 1983. Competition in the form of warehouse stores and the national chains locating units in the more rural areas will force even the most dominant independent retailer to reevaluate his operation. Here's where I see the most radical innovations continuing at home center and building material stores.

MERCHANDISING

r Lumber and remodeling packages will be emphasized.

o Telephones and accessories will replace ceiling fans as the big ticket nonlumber departments.

"RTA" - ready-to-assemble furniture will become a major department in those stores large enough to display and stock on the floor.

r Some home centers will experiment

.

toward the small contractor.

ADVERTISING

r Advertising styles will copy the "distressed sale" format.

. Multipage tabloids and booklets will be the most productive media. Computers will enable retailers to recover more accrued coop funds.

r Price guarantee will be promoted more .and mean less to the consumer.

SALES TRAININC

Posts, poles, pilings, timber, crossarms, grapestakes, dimension lumber. Pacific Wood Preserving of Bakersfield produces virtually all pressure treated wood products. o Plumbing and electrical departments will show more depth - more selection.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING

r Gondola heights will increase and aisles will widen.

o More bulk merchandise will be offered from barrels, kegs and crates, r Lumber and building material will be displayed and inventoried inside the store for easy take-with. Step-up merchandise will be better displayed, better signed.

PROMOTION AND PRICING

. Volume will increase. Margins will be tighter.

o The price sensitive "shopping basket" lists of items will be at give-away prices all year.

o Compensatory pricing will be a prime objective at many stores. Special promotions will be directed

o To raise the average ticket per customer will require sales trainers to show store level personnel how to suggest and sell set-ups and accessories.

I Incentive programs will again become an important tool.

SERVICE

. All types of delivery will be discouraged.

. Stores will open earlier and close later.

. Store phone numbers will disappear from the newspaper ads to discourage price shoppers.

. Stores will inventory more goods on the floor for "self selection."

r Building material distributors will offer retailers more management information services, product training and advertising aids to stem the "buying direct" trends.

MISCELLANEOUS

o In 1984 more women executives in the home center industry will be visible.

theme by the association as a means of focusing attention on the need for sound business practices. While every businessman knows that profits are essential to the growth and survival of business, not all businesses operate as if this were the case.

The association is promoting the notion that profit is not a dirty word, but rather the foundation for building strength, creating jobs, establishing security and providing service.

The theme will be used in developing the program for the annual convention at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Nov. 14-18, as well as guiding educational speakers and providing a reference for most association activities and communication.

President Dave Stookesberry introduced the theme at the NLBDA's National Council meeting in Houston, Tx. More than 40 presidents and managing officers attended this Jan. 22-24 meeting held in conjunction with the NAHB annual convention.

Two area meetings were held in January, in Colorado Springs and Albuquerque.

Each meeting reviewed present association activities and the association's Statement of Mission and Purposes. Each per-

I EGISLATIVE UPDATE: Arizona. hOne thousand and thirteen bills have been introduced in the current legislative session.

To date, the material suppliers' industry has not been significantly affected with proposed legislation. There are, however, various bills relating to workmen's compensation and other business administrative matters which have an impact upon all businesses.

Legislative sources in the past have estimated for each bill introduced, approximately $500 cost is incurred by taxpayers. Since the current concern of the leeisla-

tive session is securing funds for the state's budget, one would think that they could readily see how to substantially reduce some costs of government,

I am also pleased to report that the proposed changes for lower contractor and subcontractor bonding limits by the State's Registrar of Contractors, has been declared invalid by the State Attorney General.

The Arizona Lumber and Builders Supply Association was instrumental in getting legislative attention focused upon the detrimental aspects of the proposed rules changes which ultimately led to the Attorney General's action.

The home construction market in Arizona is continuing strong!

NATIONAL Lumber & BuildI ing Material Dealers Association has written to the three major manufacturers of gypsum wallboard for an explanation of both the extreme shortages of the past several months and the rapid escalation of prices brought on by those shortages.

Needless to say, the supply and demand factors and their effect on prices are well understood. Some dealers have questioned the validity of increases of the magnitude which have occurred. They particularly question why at least one concern has found it necessary to announce another $20 per thousand raise almost two months before it will become effective. This increase will push prices almost 5090 above the 1983 starting price.

The concern is not really the price, but the worrythat a continuation of the shortages could very well help kill the momentum in the housing industry.

Forklifts, the workhorse of the lumberyard, are fast becoming dangerous beasts. Annually thousands of lost-time work injuries can be traced to the operation of forklifts. Since 1951, work accidents involving forklifts have soared more than 4000/0.

The alarming increase in unsafe operation of forklifts was reported in a recent study. Here are some of the conclusions from that study:

. More than half (5290) of the injuries in the period studied involved moving forklifts; l99o involved forks being operated on stationary vehicles; and in 29o/o of the cases, neither truck nor forklift was in motion.

o Nearly half (4590) of the injuries were suffered by employees working or walking in areas where forklifts were being operated.

About 25Vo of the injuries were to workers regularly assigned to duties around forklifts, and about 2090 were to those who happened to be working or walking in an area where forklifts were operating.

Most typical injuries (22s/o of the total) were bruises and contusions involving legs, feet, or toes, especially when the forklift was in motion.

r Crushing was the most common injury associated with raising or lowering the truck's forks.

o Injuries to the extremities, legs, arms, hands, and head accounted for 7090 of all lost-time injuries associated with forklifts. Some of these injuries were caused by the forklift running over dunnage, 2x4s and strapping bands which in turn kicked up and struck the driver.

Fatal accidents involving forklifts were mainly caused by falling loads, overturned forklifts, workers run over or struck by a moving forklifu and workers thrown off, falling off or stepping off a moving forklift. Most of these accidents could be prevented by following the safety rules for operation of forklifts:

. Dont lift a load while traveling.

. Don't travel with a load lifted high.

o Drive cautiously and slowly at corners, and signal with the horn at blind corners.

o Drive in reverse when traveling down an incline or ramp.

r Check bridge plates into trucks or rail-

For best vision, drive backward with bulky loads, but face in the direction of travel.

Carry only loads well within the rated capacity of the forklifts.

Lift loads with the mast vertical or tilted slightly back.

o Don't carry unstable loads or piles; make sure loads are positioned evenly on fork for proper balance.

o Make sure forklift path is clear of dunnage, 2x4s and metal strapping bands.

Safe operation of forklifts can make them a dependable workhorse rather than a dangerous beast in the workplace.

Hardwood Flooring

This is the first in a series of columns designed to aid retctilers in selling hardwood flooring. In this first column, Dave Ferrari, ctn acknowledged expert in the business, presents a series of specific suggeslions to increase sales.

Pff.T ff fr::tff ';T:- :i, :x : never been better than lhey are today for home improvdment centers and building supply dealers.

In addition to the vast potential of do-it-yourselfers that are looking to save a few dollars by purchasing and installing their own flooring, there is a fast growing number of smaller general contractors who are addine hard-

wood flooring installation to their service package.

The pertinent question is, "What is the most important single factor necessary to maintain a fast moving hardwood flooring sales program?" Simple answer an attractive hardwood display that is located in a high visibility area, preferably in a good traffic flow pattern. Stay away from nooks and corners where the disnlav has to

be literally "discovered" by the potential buyer.

Be sure and utilize a display that is modern and kept up{o-date with the latest trends in wood patterns and textures. Particularly effective is a new display recently introduced by a major hardwood floor manufacturer that can be placed as an island in advantageous locations as against being required to stand against a back wall or in a corner. Such a display supercedes and has greater advantages over the former conventional wing panel method for displaying wood patterns and textures.

In addition to maintaining an attractive display and pertinent literature in a visible location, it is a good

Off-Price Retailing Growing

"Off-price retailing is a revolution that won't go away," according to Dr. Cyrus Wilson, Management Horizons, Inc.

He sharply contrasted the off-price phenomenon with the particularly difficult past five years traditional retailers have seen. "Retail sales growth, overall, has been modest, profitability severely depressed, and business failures have set new records during the economic malaise of 1979-83."

"Against this background," Wilson continued, "off-price retailing is one major sector of retailing that has been growing in excess of 2090 per year, compounded, and has generated return on investment in excess of twice the median performance for all public retails. The current business recovery, with better sales and earnings results now being posted by all major retailers, is no reasonto think that offprice retailing will decline in importance in the foreseeable future."

"Off-price retailers are qualitatively and quantitatively different than conventional retailers," Wilson stressed. He pointed out that various off-price firms have been quite successful using dissimilar marketing approaches, but that some elements of the off-price program are increasingly pervasive:

o A major part of the under pricing capability is made possible by buying advantages, related to large future contracts and the ability to scour the market for anything that may be bought on exceptionally attractive terms.

o In merchandising, a growing proportion of total off-price sales are first quality, recognized brand name merchandise as opposed to earlier practices of selling mainly irregulars, seconds, or end-ofseason merchandise.

r Most off-price retailers have lowerrent locations because of the ability to utilize recycled space in free standing stores or small shopping centers. This type of space is abundantly available.

o Promotional costs are low, with heavy reliance upon word-ofmouth to build a customer base.

o Ambience is usually in a no frills environment. However, some noticeable trends are emerging for leading off-price chains to provide a more upscale atmosphere. The feeling that off-price is a

32 The Merchant Magazine

singular form of retailing was dispelled by Wilson, who argued that off-price stores fall into six major categories, three each by two operating types of origin, namely manufacturing origin and retailing origin.

They can learn some of the basics of construction techniques. You might even want to make one employee the deck expert and another the siding expert.

Today, six of the major redwood lumber producers fund California Redwood Association promotion, industry support and technical services. They are Georgia Pacific Corporation, Harwood Products Company, Miller Redwood Company, The Pacific Lumber Company, Simpson Trmber Company and Timber Realization Company. These services provide an excellent marketing base for redwood merchants to build upon and the California Redwood Association can help dealers establish a reputation as a redwood merchant, so please contact us. Wood ldea Home

Innovative construction and energy-saving features were keys to making the Wood Idea Home a winner of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) "Building Value Into Housing" award.

A 1,185 sq. ft. ranch with three bedrooms, two full baths, a living room, kitchen, and family room,/ dining area, it is made almost entirely of wood, including the foundation, and costs about 2590 less to build than conventional homes.

The HUD award was based on a nationwide competition to stimulate the development of innovative, costsaving construction techniques for affordable homes. The Wood ldea Home also won the "Design for Better Living Award," sponsored by the American Wood Council.

The Wood Idea Home incorporates four major innovations:

o A truss-framed system of construction in which floor, walls and roof are all connected in one factory-assembled piece.

o An air infiltration barrier of "Tyvek" spunbonded olefin which reduces the home's air exchange rate and impeded heat loss through walls.

o A waferboard skin over the entire house which serves as sheathing, roofing and flooring.

. A Plen-Wood ductless underfloor heating and cooling system.

The truss-framed system (TFS) is a new building concept conceived and developed by the U.S. Forest

Products Laboratory of Madison, Wisconsin. The preassembled frames are inexpensive to transport, can be quickly tilted up into place by two workers, and make it possible to construct a Wood ldea Home in 20 days.

Once the truss frames are in place, the entire structure is wrapped in "Tyvek Housewrap" made by Du Pont.

Another unusual aspect of the Wood ldea Home is the use of waferboard for walls, floors and roof. Waferboard, a product of Louisiana-Pacific Company, is a fabricated sheet material made of wood particles bonded together with waterproof resin and edge-sealed to reduce swelling.

Redwood Park Volume Accord

Louisiana PacificCorp. has reached a formal agreement with the Department of Justice on issues related to the volume of timber on the property takento expandthe Redwood National Park on the north coast of California in 1978.

Harry A. Merlo, L-P's chairman and president, said "We are satisfied that the volume settlement reached with the government is a fair one and eliminates a major element of uncertainty from determination of the ultimate payment due L-P. We believe that the amounts we have recorded and our financial repofting of the government taking of our timberland remain conservative and that no change is required as a result of the volume settlement."

An exchange of information with the Department of Justice on the value of the timber and timberland taken to expand the park is expected in the very near future.

r-HETOOLS of the trade are often I the key to success. The cooperation between manufacturer and distributor/dealer to supply and use the tools assures unlocking the door to that success.

The distributor and the dealer who participate in the promotion programs offered are a step ahead of competitors.

At Simpson, we work closely with our customers furnishing a variety of tools that include items such as advertising "slicks"black and white reproductions in sizes for newspaper or trade journal insertions with space left for imprinting name and address and any prices for a special redwood line or sale. Radio and television scripts are available. Full color literature is available for every redwood product line. These are but a few ideas.

The real appeal and impact of the progftrm is that it combines a proven traffic building in-store promotional program with co-op support. Simpson offers to share with the dealer/distributor 50/50 in the cost of approved sales events. The program is delineated to position the Simpson redwood wholesaler as the most valuable lumber supplier to the dealer and, in turn, motivate the retailer to stock and sell redwood. It is a flexible prornotion program, easy to understand, with tools that tell the redwood story.

rograms are key to sales success

One of the interesting discoveries that came out of the recent building slump was that promotional ideas generated during the bad times were equally successful during good times.

Sales successes were documented in many ways. Several dealers put together deck contests, complete with prizes (Hawaii trips, etc.), professional judging and finally publicity. The contests, in all cases, generated more entries than were anticipated, consequently selling more redwood to both the do-it-yourself homeowner and the builder who elected to add decks.

One distributor used live radio to talk on air with prospective customers, doing so from the dealer's location. Questions were all answered, culminating in an invitation to come down to the store. It was a traffic builder.

One of the best customer attractions was the Simpson Redwood Book of Wood/Book of Could (cur-

rently retailing for $3.95 per copy) offered free with a coupon that appeared in newspaper advertising. Sales were registered at the grass roots level

through this innovative book of plans, detailed with material requirements and instructions on how to build.

A Complete Redwood Guide

More innovative and informative than its predecessor, Simpson Timber's second edition of the Redwood Book of Wood/Could II is just off the press.

Featured are 23 projects in redwood created by three professionals in fine woodworking. Careful instructions and plans are included for each to assist the do-it-yourself homeowner as well as the builder to construct a wide range of projects ranging from chairs to cabinetry and outdoor amenities. Plans are detailed with the materials re-

quired listed in addition to construction information. A valuable section of tips for working with wood is included in the new edition as well as a special section on the story of redwood.

The four pages that comprise the Book of Wood tell the history of the redwoods, the inherent properties and characteristics that make this remarkable wood an outstanding performer for a wide range of exterior, interior, yard and garden uses.

Eleven publicly held timber companies were excluded from an injunction temporarily halting enforcement of an estimated $1.5 billion of U.S. Forest Service timber-harvesting contracts.

Table Wood Choices Change

New introductions in occasional tables at the San Francisco furniture market may indicate a return to closegrain woods. The change from l29o of the market showings to 16.590 is important because that includes all table groups, says Dave McCullam, vice president of Northwest Hardwoods, Inc., Portland, Or., whose staff makes the twice yearly survey.

The close-grain woods include maple, birch, cherry and Northwest alder.

Oak, still the leader, dropped from 34.60/o of the showroom presentations to 30.4s/o in one year.

four sessions for management, supervisory and safety personnel, according to chairman Ken Patrick, Western Wood Products Association.

Keynoting the conference will be William Moshofsky, former vice president for government affairs for Georgia-Pacific Corp., and a newly announced candidate for the United States House of Representatives.

A number of safety awards will be presented during the conference which will include an exhibit of safety products and services.

The total open grain woods of oak, ash, elm, and pine accounted for 37.6V0 of the showing compared to 42.5r'o a year ago. Mahogany showed gro',r th from 6.20/o to 6.4v/o and walnut increased to 4.5V0 followed by its sister wood of pecan-hickory at 4.40/0.

Burls dominated 8.590 of the showroom presentations with olive, ash, mappa, Carpateum elm, Oregon myrtle, maple, walnut and redwood burls being widely used. Other woods at 4.00/o included teak, rosewood, yew, prima vera, ebony, black bean, hackberry, ramin, and meranti.

Western Lumber Stays Home

California and Oregon were the No. I and No. 2 destinations for Western lumber in 1983, receiving 28.8t/o and 13,2s/0, respectively.

Washington received 8.190 with the rest of the western states receiving 18.390 of all the western softwood shipped to markets in the U.S. The South, including Texas and Oklahoma, received 14.7o/0, Lake States received 12.80/0.

These percentages added up to an overall market share of 4lo/o to dominate the domestic lumber markets. Canadian softwood and Southern pine were in second and third place. Going into every state in the U.S., Western softwood shipments increased to 15.9 billion board feet in '83 from 12.6 billion board feet in '82.

tractors. Advertising includes print, television and radio. George Gower, vice president and general manager, explained that they research their markets and start their promotional thrust in the beginning of April. McCall, home of Payette Lakes Lumber, is a growing resort area, so they promote the architectural grades of redwood in this area with an eye toward the custom home market. They use redwood displays

throughout the store, including redwood lattice and trim on counters. They even have a deck built in the shape of Idaho. The stores have a project center where customers can find ideas and plans from CRA literature and LaBelle films. Free deck design service is offered which includes scale models. CRA's DesignA-Deck Plans Kits are given free to serious customers. Siding samples are displayed on the walls of the stores, so customers can see what it will look like on large surfaces.

An in-house advertising agency prepares newspaper ads and handles radio and television advertising. In April, Payette Lakes Lumber and Evans Building Center kick off the outdoor season with an annual d-iy fair. Deck experts provide building tips and advice to customers and the stores offer pre-planned deck packages. Gower said they also hold redwood deck contests to generate interest during the deck building season. First prize is a gazebo, second prize cash and other prizes include gift certificates.

Successful redwood dealers will dways find a way to meet some special need of their community.

The Selectra solid state dishwasher combines the latest solid state technology with a variety of features.

Automatic Light Switch

The Programmable Light Switch from BRK Electronics is an automatic lighting control.

With push button operation, it replaces standard light switches while iombining a microprocessor-based programmable timer, quartz digital clock, onloff switch and touch dimmer in a single unit.

The switch also has hidden controls, one-button program review, power failure protection, and a mode indicator that denotes whether a controlled light is on or off.

Resin impregnated overlays are bonded by heat and pressure to exterior grade plywood with a woodgrain texture embossed into the overlay during bonding.

The clear textured surface. takes paint or solid color stain finishes, reportedly holding it up to three times longer than raw wood. Lightweight for one person application, the panels can be applied directly to the studs.

A variety of patterns are available in 4'x8 ' and 4'x9' panels.

A ladder installed during the construction of a new home is said to pay for itself through energy savings in about one year while remodelers will have three years before it pays for itself. Federal or state tax credits could shorten the payback period in a recent installation.

Lighting The Way

Diablo Technologies' Good Nite Light, Power Alert, and Night Eye have UL listing and ciury a one year warranty.

The Good Nite Light, an automatic night light that turns on at dusk and off at dawn, uses only seven watts. The photoelectric cell and a 10090 solid state circuit virtually eliminates flickering.

Power Alert goes on in a power failure. It plugs into any electrical outlet to provide added safety. Its reflector design shines the light out and down for safety. Also, it turns into a rechargeble flashlight. When it is plugged in and placed on its "auto" setting, a small orange light will go on indicating the power is on and the batteries are charging. Unplugged and switched to the "on" setting, it can be used as a flashlight. Fully charged, it provides continuous bright light up to 60 minutes.

Wood Lighting Help?

Wood lighting standards from the J.H. Baxter Co. come in curved pole, straight top or side mounted poles with either single or double crossarm models.

These poles are designed to fit in with landscaping and residential developments. Laminated from Pacific Coast Douglas fir, they age and look like drift wood after a few years. Designs are reportedly environmentally compatible and can adapt to varied building conditions.

All standards are pressure treated full length for protection against decay and insect damage. Standards meet or exceed the NEMA deflection requirements for 100 m.p.h. winds including 1.3 gust factors.

Fence Mending Technique

Fencemender from Darco is a device that sleeves a rotted fence post to make it structurally sound.

Posts that are in usable concrete reportedly can be sleeved by driving the two piece unit into the existing post hole with a sledge hammer. The unit seizes within the concrete to secure the rotted post.

If posts are not in concrete, they are sleeved first, then a concrete pad is poured around the sleeve.

Both systems are said to take as little as l0 minutes to accomplish. Fencemender comes in two sizes, 4" for rough posts and 3.5" for smooth 4x4 posts.

Redwood plywood fills market need

RY,-f,,1"'":r;'#"f, *":hrJ,;

exaggerated according to Pete Reyneke, the sales manager of the plywood division of Miller Redwood Co., Merlin, Or.

"Our company," Reyneke says, "has made a strong push over the past year to make sure our redwood plywood products were available, and that builders, architects and distributors know about it. And now we're beginning to see the results."

Back in 1980, the company found itself in something of a Catch 22 situation. Redwood plywood wuts synonymous with Simpson Trmber, and to some degree, Pacific Lumber Co., who together were producing about 60 million feet of 3/8 " redwood plywood annually. In comparison Miller Redwood was something of a specialty producer, offering a higher quality panel in terms of veneer grade and bond performance.

Reyneke says, "we had a nice group of customers who refused to use anything but Miller Redwood Plywood. And they bought all we could produce."

ln 1979 Pacific Lumber Co. made

the decision to halt production of redwood plywood, and in 1980, Simpson followed suit. Miller Redwood found the market all to itself. For a while, Reyneke says, Miller Redwood was doing all it could just to meet the demand for redwood plywood-it was difflrcult to get enough ven@r from its Crescent City, Ca., mill. "Not because it wasn't available," he says, "but because so much of Miller Redwood's timberlands consist of oldgrowth redwood, and many of the logs were too big to get on the veneer lathes."

For two years, Miller Redwood

sold all the redwood plywood it could make, and at the same time invested in new equipment to substantially increase the amount of veneer it could produce. But once they were in position to make all the redwood plywood the market could buy, demand began to slacken.

"In late 1982," Reyneke says, "we realized just how much Simpson and Pacific Lumber were creating a market for our product. With them out of the picture, potential customers for our product began to think that no one was making redwood plywood anymore.tt

In mid-1983, Miller Redwood launched an aggressive marketing campaign directed at distributors, builders and architects to tell them that redwood plywood was indeed still available. "We found out pretty quickly how much demand for the product was still out there," Reyneke says. "We have had very good response. It's a product people still want,"

Why redwood plywood? It is a very good siding product, says Reyneke. It

idea to stock the tools and various supplies necessary for doing the installation.

Buying is impulsive. One purchase leads to another. Make every effort to keep the customer in your place of business. Don't make it necessary for him to go elsewhere to complete his shopping. A small inventory of flooring, adhesive, flooring nails, a choice of prefinished or unfinished mouldings, and a variety ofstains should do the trick.

Another suggestion is to carry a stock of ' 'cabin grade' ' flooring in addition to the top grade stock. This lower priced material will accommodate the budget buyer and also provide him with the opportunity to compare and upgrade the purchase if so desired.

Finally, make certain that your sales personnel are well trained and knowledgeable in the various aspects of hardwood flooring and its installation. There is absolutely nothing that will discourage a sale faster than a salesperson who cannot authoritatively answer questions or lend meaningful advice.Your sales staffs are undoubtedly good, intelligent people, otherwise they would not be working for you. A quick refresher course on the whys and wherefores of hardwood flooring could possibly be very advantageous to them and your business. Seminars for salespeople and in-house demonstrations for the general public by hardwood flooring distributor representatives can be easily arranged.

Greenheart: hardworking hardwood

ESPITE its romantic niune. Egreenheart (Ocoteo rodiaei) is a wood of outstanding strength and durability, used where these qualities, plus its availability in very large sizes, are required. Throughout the world it is renowned as a structural timber for piling, piers, dock and harbor work and lock gates.

In addition, greenheart is used for pier decking and handrails, industrial flooring, as bearers for engines in the engineering industry, for vats, agitators in vats and filter presses in the chemical industry. It also is a standard timber for manufacturing the shafts of rackets, laminated archery bows and fishing rods in the sporting goods industry.

Found in Guyana in large quantities and in Surinam and Brazil in limited amounts, the wood had been logged for export for over200 years. The tree grows very high, up to 130 ft., developing a long straight cylindrical bole which is often 50 to 80 ft. long and 16 to ?A in. in diameter.

Greenheart is shipped mostly as hewn baulks, squared to 12 to 16 in. in lengths up to 40 ft. Some squares are Vl in. and over 60 ft. long.

The wood which has a moderately fine texture, free from knots and other defects, is very hard and heavy. With an average density of 64 lb. per foot seasoned, it is one ofthe heaviest timbers used commercially. Generally used unseasoned, it has a density of about l0 lbs. per foot.

Greenheart has a distinctive pale to dark olive green heartwood, often

with dark brown or black markings. The sapwood, which is not always well defined, is pale.

Greenheart timber seasons slowly with considerable degrade by checking and splitting in large dimensions. When dry, it is rated as having a medium movement in service. It is exceptionally strong, about 5090 heavier than English oak and almost twice as

resistant to shock and more than twice as strong in bending, compression and stiffness. It is moderately good for steam bending.

This strength and weight are detrimental to the wood in working and finishing properties. It is difficult to work with both hand and machine tools. For ripsawing, saws with 66 teeth and a 15 hook are recommended. Sharp planing cutters with a 20o cutting angle give a good finish, but the wood has a marked blunting effect. When the cutters are dulled, the finish is easily torn or becomes fibrous. Wood tends to break away as tools exit in end grain working. To prevent splitting, holes must be prebored for screws.

Working of greenheart can be hazardous. Some operators experience nasal irritation from the dust caused by machining. Splinters can cause septic wounds.

(13) Poor planning on your part does not necessarily create an emergency on our Part.

(14) Authorized Service:

Suppose we refund your money' send you another one without charge, close the store, and have the manager shot - Would that be satisfactory?
