When dealers compare computer systems their overwhelming choice is Dalaline.

The underlying reason is that Dataline understands the complexities of your business. We speak your language. Direct, results-oriented dealer language.

Unique among computer companies, Dataline has specialized for over eleven years in designing only programs to meet the special needs of building supply and home center customers. We start by helping you ask the right questions, by exploring the various aspects of your business, by identifying problems and opportunities. Only then do we begin applying the flexibility of a Dataline system.

And we don't stop there. Working with your staff, we make sure that every program is runnin g smoothlg, efficientlA, profitablg.

The results? It is commonplace for Dataline users to reduce inventory levels by as much as 757", double product turnover rates, double collection of finance charges and increase gross margins by as much as 5 percentage points (and sometimes more).

It is also commonplace for dealers to achieve payback on investment within eight months of operational startup.

A California dealer uncovered all the answers he needed when 45 of our customers responded to his inquiries. He now relies on his own Dataline System.

Shouldn't you be considering a Dataline Computer System, too?

Mortgage Retirement Accounts

lll/ESTERN dealers have long had apositive UU reputation for innovation and the willingness to try something new. Recent efforts coming out of the Rocky Mountains show this spirit is alive and well. Their willingness to try something new to fight tough times is commendable indeed.

The Mountain States Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association has been very active in a growing national campaign to gain congressional approval for a new program designed to move billions of dollars of new capital into the home mortgage market.

Called a "Mortgage Retirement Accountl'it would allow savers to "buy down" existing home mortgages with tax deferred dollars. This would let homeowners pay off their mortgage faster, and provide extra money for consumer spending. It would also free up large amounts of capital for new mortgages.

According to the association, for example, if a homeowner had a $50,000, 3O-year mortgage at l59o the monthly payment would be $632.23. At the end of 30 years the total payout would be $227,602.80. An MRA would allow Joe Homeowner to pay up to $2000 per year against the principal. Thus, in ten years and three months,

he could pay off the loan and save $ 149,838.51 in interest to boot. A similar example, using $1000 in additional tax deferred payments against the principal would result in the mortgage being retired in l3 years and I I months with an interest savings of $122,020.39.

A major benefit of the proposed MRA program is that it is an expansion ofthe existing Individual Retirement Account system and could thus tie in with an on-going program. As visualized by proponents, the cost to the U.S. Treasury would be virtually nothing because of the tie in feature. Advocates see jobs beir€ created and tax revenues increased as mortgages are paid offearly. They feel these dollars then would be available to correct the long term funding problems currently bedeviling the housing and building material supply industries. An earlier end to mortgage payments would also aid citizens at retirement time, an especially appealing feature given the current problems of the Social Security System.

The MRA is an attractive idea that merits considerable study. We tip our hats to the MSL & BMDA for their aggressive role in promoting MRA.

Texas linebacker scores in redwood

lll/HEN asked to compare the UU lumber business with football, Lee Roy Jordan, former Dallas Cowboy linebacker, said it all boils down to the quality of people you have on your team. If you have quality on the management level and on the field, you're headed for success.

Jordan has met with success in Texas-on the football field and in the business. He came to be a lumber merchant by chance. Originally, he was looking for a car dealership. When the deal fell through, his banker told him about an established lumber company on the market, and Jordan has been a lumberman since 1977. A decision he doesn't regret.

He explained that Texas is an excellent market for redwood. Outdoor

living is a tradition, so naturally redwood is popular for decks, trellises, shade structures and surrounds for spas, tubs and pools. Texas is influenced by West Coast architects and as a result wood siding is rapidly growing in popularity. The increasing costs ofbrick and labor have also contributed to the use of wood. Redwood receives a good share of the demand because of its beauty and reputation for performance.

Redwood sales remained relatively stable in spite of the slump in new construction because remodeling projects made up the difference, Jordan said. People may be staying in

Redwood and wine make mellow companions

Ff EDWOOD and wine have been fllinked together for many years, both in production and as a lovely setting for sampling.

Selected initially because it was readily available in the redwood forests close by the vineyards, redwood has been used for many years in California for making wine barrels and tanks. While many woods are too porous and some have resinous flavors undesirable for wine, redwood is neutral as far as adding to the flavor of wine. In extractable elements, it is limited to very small quantities of various phenolics or natural wood compounds. These help wine withstand continued oxidation during extended aging. Redwood is most often used to soften and mellow full-bodied red wines.

The inherent stability of redwood combines with the highly specialized manufacturing of the tanks to eliminate "weeping" or leakage. Tanks are of redwood graded tank stock, an extremely high grade. After being dried for 12 to l8 months to remove the water content, the wood was carefully engineered to order.

In the fine redwood tanks no glues or adhesives have been used. The staves are made so that the wood mates and actually acts as its own gasket with steel bands to provide a cinch. The redwood wine tanks are often huge with large capacities. Those used at the Sebastiani Vineyards in the Sonoma Valley range in size from 377 gallons to 60,000 gallons.

Many wineries have selected redwood for the exteriors and interiors of their buildings. Redwood pavilions and gazebos are often used in landscaping. At the Simi Winery, wood taken from old redwood tanks dating back to 1876 was used for paneling and decking.

Homeowners including wine cellars in plans for new homes or

remodeling present homes to add a wine room usually opt for redwood because of its beauty and natural insulating qualities. Insulation is important sincewine should be stored at a proper coolness of 60 o to 65 '. Redwood also provides the appearance of warmth and congeniality associated with wine.

Both architects and do-it-yourselfers tend to like redwood because of its appearance, durability and natural characteristics. Redwood was selected for the wine cellar added by those remodeling a Greek Revival farmhouse into the "Idea House for

Redwood also is an ideal wood for small projects relating to wine such as gift boxes, built-in and free standing wine vaults, wine racks of all sizes and wine storage bins for retail sales as well as home use. Again, these items can be individualized d-i-y projects as well as commercially produced.

Dealers can capitalize on the natural relationship of redwood and wine by displaying photos, plans and vignettes to both educate and inspire the consumer.

Can redwood hold its share of the market?

AlfgouGH redwood is firmly enFltrenched in the market, queries often arise about its reliability and performance. Presenting questions gleaned in our reporting, including some tough ones about competing species, The Merchant asked Keith Lanning, executive vice president and general manager of the California Redwood Association to clarify redwood's position today.

QUESTION: Which wood presents the most competition to redwood in the Western States?

ANSWER: Western red cedar is just about the only readily available wood which has characteristics comparable to redwood. We compete with exterior siding, interior paneling and outdoor living markets. Treated lumber offers some competition in the outdoor living market.

Q: How do you plan to meet this challenge?

A: The competition between redwood and cedar is nothing new. We've been meeting the challenge ever since we've been in business. Up to now, we've been competing with our clear architectural grades. There are two newly developed products available which will make redwood more competitive than ever: B grade and the rustic sidings. B grade redwood is a new grade with limited amounts of small, tight knots, graded on one face. Rustic sidings come from second growth trees which produce smaller, sounder knots than the old growth trees. In regard to treated lumber, we plan to continue pointing out the fact that chemical treatment affects only durability and color of whitewood lumber; it will not change inherent characteristics of the species.

Q: What sort of marketing campaign are you conducting?

A: The member mills of CRA (Georgia-Pacific, Harwood, Miller, The Pacific Lumber Co., Simpson Timber Co.) fund us to promote redwood on a national basis. Advertising and publicity appear in magazine and newspapers, zeroing in on important lumber buyers and specifiers-architects, builders and consumers.Redwood's image as a desirable, high-quality product has made it a strong seller to the custom home market.

Q: Obviously, you are committed to redwood; specifically, how is it superior to competing species?

A: In terms of beauty, redwood speaks for itself. I don't think there is another softwood that can rival redwood in this area. If you want me to compare redwood's performance with the treated species, I have to say the comparison is mutually difficult. On one hand you have redwood's natural durability versus treated lumber, and on the other you have to compare treated lumber's stability, shrinkage, pitch content and general appearance with redwood. I think it's an "apples and oranges" comparison where both products have specific qualities which recommend them to certain applications.

Q: How would you persuade a customer that redwood is worth extra money?

A: I imagine you can sell almost anyone a product once. Repeat business and word-of-mouth sales are harder to maintain, but these are what make a product and a retailer successful. With redwood's tradition of longJasting performance, we find that satisfied users are often our strongest salesmen. Architects are known for being among the most critical customers, yet redwood is a favorite with architects. In short. redwood is worth the extra money because there is no other wood like it.

Q: What competition does pressure treated hem-fir, Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine offer?

A: Pressure treated lumber does offer competition in a few limited areas. It is limited by the nature of the species treated, by the applications and by the market itself. As you know, different species accept treatment more readily than others just as some treatment processes are more effective than others. It's not possible to tell by visual inspection whether a piece of wood has been properly treated. It's much easier to tell whether a piece of redwood is all rot-resistant heartwood. Treatment doesn't change the quality or grade of the lumber. There are applications where pressure treated lumber is the ideal choice. but there are many highly visual applications where redwood will still be the first choice.

Q: Can redwood really outperform pressure treated lumber?

A: If you are talking only about durability, I'd have to say probably not. On the other hand, if you want to talk about the appearance of siding or a deck surface over an extended period of time, I'd say yes, redwood will outperform pressure treated lumber. Redwood will hold up better with less shrinkage, cupping, checking and warping than most of the grades and species treated. It won't bleed with pitch like some woods, and it

Redwood strong in furniture market

FTEDWOOD furniture is unique. JINo other furniture uses wood grown in only one place in the world. Almost no other furniture can be traced in origin to one of five manufacturers.

All found leisure areas ofthe country originates in a region of Northern California called The Redwood Region. The majority of redwood casual furniture

of the in the redwood furniture gardens, patios and

sold through home centers, patio shops, discount stores, department stores, mail order and catalog houses comes from Little Lake Industries, Harris of Pendleton, Crown Redwood Co., Inc., A. Brandt Co., Inc., or Vandy-Craft.

Little Lake and Crown Redwood Co., Inc. are located in the heart of the redwood producing area: Little Lake, a division of U.S. Leisure, at Willits and Crown Redwood at Fortuna. Harris manufactures at Pendleton, Or., and A. Brandt Co., Inc., at Fort Worth, Tx. Vandy-Craft is located in Chicago, Il.

Competing with metal, plastic and white wood in the outdoor furniture marketplace, redwood has gained favor in the past few years. It is especially popular on the East Coast, according to Dave Cubit, Little Lake industrial products manager, who explains this is due in part to the great mass of population located there and

a more appreciative attitude towards redwood as a species.

The redwood furniture market is "nothing but growth," comments Jean Nichols at Crown Redwood. This firm, the newest in the redwood furniture market, is experiencing continued growth. Nichols credits redwood's popularity to it being a natural as well as a unique product.

The manufacturing process is virtually the same at all companies. Little Lake, called the world's largest manufacturer of redwood outdoor furniture, buys25 to 30million board feet of l0 to 20 foot lengths of redwood from neighboring mills each year, keeping several million board feet as an air drying yard inventory at

parts depends on the extent of the lines manufactured. For example, the inventory at Little Lake includes 725 wooden parts for 14 furniture lines.

Finished parts are matched according to product, packed in cartons and shipped to assembly plants located throughout the country by Little Lake and Harris. From these sites, the assembled furniture with cushions is sent to retailers. Furniture from Little Lake which is also sold with Sierra Leisure or house brand labels is assembled in Calhoun, Ga., Longview, Tx., Alexandria, In., Pottstown, Pa., and San Bernardino, Ca.

Crown Redwood assembles, cushions and packages its furniture in Fortuna. Sixty to 75 piggy back vans of completed furniture leave the plant each month enroute to warehouse distributors, according to Nichols. Their lines are marketed under the Crown Redwood label.

Sales staffs and reps spend a lot of time educating dealers on redwood

furniture sales features. They all stress that redwood furniture is not an item which must be replaced each year. "If maintained as suggested, redwood will last for years," Cubit says.

Reasonable care includes protecting the wood with an oil base penetrating semi-transparent stain. This should be renewed after a light "kiss" sanding each year or so. Ifthe homeowner likes the natural silvery patina that bare redwood acquires, no finish is necessary since redwood is considered the ideal outdoor wood.

An essential maintenance step often overlooked is the tightening of the bolts. Contractions of the wood may loosen these, causing the furniture to become wobbly, but an annual spring tightening will keep it in good shape.

Redwood furniture manufacturers convey a special feeling about their unique product. A feeling shared by the retailers and consumers if one can judge by the success of the industry.

all times. After six to nine months in the yard, the redwood is transferred to dry kilns for two to four weeks of final drying. Crown buys most of its redwood ready to use since its kilns cannot keep up with production demand. Out of state companies have to transport the redwood to their manufacturing facilities.

Dried lumber travels through a plant being cut, shaped and finished into the parts needed for outdoor furniture, including frame sides, arm rests and wheels. The number of

It's Redwood on theOutside

Visual beauty is not the only quality of redwood siding. Above average insulation against heat and cold is provided by redwood's low density, meaning that it has a high percentage of dead air spaces in ratio to wood substance.

In insulating value, a redwood board one inch thick is equal to 6 inches of brick, 9 inches of cement block, 14 inches of concrete or stucco and over 1,700 inches of aluminum. The insulation protection provided by redwood can keep a home comfortable year around with a minimum expense for heating or air conditioning.

High stability makes redwood a durable all weather siding, capable of lying straight and flat for the life of the structure with little or no checking or other weather damage. Durability also is an important characteristic of redwood. It is resistant to decay and insects.

HOME GENTER MERGHANT

QfOneS. like people. have personrEalities. And like people, stores are friendly or cold, helpful or standoffish, sincere or not-to-be believed. Like people, stores have the personality that makes folks feel glad that they came-or feel that the store couldn't care less.

Unlike people, however, a store's personality cannot be totally controlled by a single element. It's a combination of merchandise, location, pricing, services, displays and how that total package is presented in the advertising and promotion that makes up a store's personality. You can put stores with similar characteristics side-by-side, but a slight variation in attitude can be the difference between making a customer feel comfortable or unwanted.

NeimantMarcus, in spite of their exclusiveness, has the capacity to make their customers feel well attended. N-M's top management evidently mandates an employee attitude that lets every customer know that they are important. Their help is trained to be courteous and to sell value. My wife tells me she can find great bargains at Neiman with the assistance of their store help. (We've got the monthly statements to prove it.)

On the other hand, Saks Fifth Avenue, with a similar location, displays, merchandise mix and pricing, makes us feel that our shopping there is an interruption of their non-selling duties. Their snotty sales ladies with the chains hanging from

their eyeglasses sure know how to blow off customers.

Home centers and building material retailers have personality problems too. The most obvious is the advertising.

Only a few major chains have developed a style that is easily recognizable and the repetition of the "item and price" format of presenting merchandise is boring. Some of these retailers present ads that look dirty compared to their attractively merchandised stores, and, conversely, some classic attractive ads invite customers into what turns out to be a schlock store with shoddy merchandise.

It's time home center retailers put a stop to just "filling space" in their ads. The repetition of sale merchandise just to fill those weekly full page or multiple page ads is just establishing new low selling prices for those items.

Most home center ads do nothing to create sales. Instead they play the numbers game presenting as many items on a page as they can fit. The theory here is that they may reach the customer seeking a specific item on the date it's advertised. It's like publishing a weekly price list or catalog.

I get a kick out of reading the ads from the few creative advertisers in our industry. They sell ideas. Hechingers, Handyman, Lowe's, Rickels, Dixieline, Knox, Lampert and a handful ofothers, produce some excellent advertising presentations. While often they, too, get caught up in filling space with item-andprice ads, the long range effect of their idea selling makes their customers think

ofthem first even on those days when no ads are scheduled.

As a retail operator, think oi yourself as ajuggler spinning plates. You have to run from plate to plate to keep 'em from falling once you've got 'em started. It takes a constant vigil to keep all the elements up to your standards. The advertising, housekeeping, visual displays, signing, product knowledge training, sales training, store lighting and you know the rest of the list. One broken plate mars the personality of the store.

Have you dropped any plates recently?

"It was a rough Christmas season-we had more gifts returned than we sold."

BMA celebrates its 8fth anniversary this year as a strong and vital organization for the lumber and building material distribution industry in the Pacific Northwest.

The Inland Empire Retail Lumber Dealers Association established an office in Spokane in 1903. In l9(X the name was changed to Western Retail Lumbermens Association and in1967 it became the Western Building Material Association.

The Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 increases the Federal tax on gasoline, diesel and special motor fuels to 90 per gallon (up from 4C) effective April I , 1983. Also effective April l, 1983, the law converts the current l09o manufacturer's excise tax on truck and trailer chassis, bodies and tractors to a l29o retail tax. Exempted from this tax are truck chassis bodies under 33,000lbs. and truck trailer and semitrailer chassis and bodies under 26,000 lbs. Both taxes will expire October l, 1988. The Act also amends the current Heavy Vehicle Use Tax by establishing a graduated tax scale effective July I, 1984. A new graduated tax is established on highway tires effective January l, 1984. The Act repealed, effective the day after the President's signature, the 890 manufacturer's excise tax on truck parts and accessories, and the 60 per gallon tax on lubricating oil. If you would like a more detailed summary

of the major provisions of this Act, ask WBMA for acopy.

Service stations supplied by major oil companies were among the first retail establishments to offer discounts to customers who pay in cash rather than by credit card, but they're not likely to be the

last. If you are thinking about following their lead, you should be aware of an important ground rule laid down by the Federal Trade Commission regardingdiscounts for cash: the practice cannot be discriminatory; the discounts must be offered to all customers. So, a retailer can't quietly inform only those who present credit cards that a discount is available. Nor can prices be marked up for those who pay with plastic; that would be a surcharge, which is not allowed. Must the discount be limited to the extra costs that credit card billings bring? No, says the FTC, you give any discount you wish.

lrf OUSE BLLL2t7t, the cleanup bill I lon the mechanics and materialmen's lien law written by our association and the Arizona General Contractors passed the Commerce Committee by a unanimous vote with complete unity of the Home Builders Association from Phoenix, Tucson, AGC and ALBSA.

Expected to pass, it is strictly a bill to make it easier to file the 20 day preliminary notice by a requirement of legal description or best known address. The legal description is only necessary when an actual lien is filed. It also requires the estimated material cost within 2090 which cuts down hling the preliminary notice more than once if that 200/o requirement is met. It also requires a

notice of completion to be mailed by the owner to the general contractor and all who filed the preliminary notice.

Other legislation concerning dealers includes HB 2077 which tightens regulations on insurance companies regarding workmen's compensation.

Our annual convention dates are May 5-7 at the Doubletree Inn in Tucson. Jack Sombrio and his committee are putting together a hne program using the theme "New Directions."

Jim Barlow, chairman of the wood promotion committee, will announce soon a progr€rm for dealers to work with home builders to encourage more wood frame construction.

Accounts similar to the Individual ReFRED CARUSO tirement Account program has been executive secretary

FIENVER area retail lumber and Ebuilding material dealers are being urged to join a national campaign to gain congressional approval of a program designed to bring billions of dollars of capital into the home mortgage market.

Dave Stookesberry, v.p. of Economy Lumber and Hardware, Denver, and manager of their Greeley operation as well as Colorado v.p. and president-elect of our association, told a meeting of WOOD, Inc., that the proposed Mortgage Retirement Account program is the most promising long-term solution to the nation's growing housing problem to be presented in modern history. The measure is expected to be introduced soon in Congress by Senator John Tower, (R. Tx.).

We have been building support for the MRA since our convention last September. The response by industry organizations and citizen's groups to the concept

trbmendous.

As Stookesberry explains, the MRA concept offers tremendous advantages to the private citizen while attracting billions of dollars into the depressed construction industry.

MRAs would allow savers to "buY down" existing home mortgages with tax deferred dollars. This would allow them to pay off loans faster, thus freeing up funds for new mortgages, and increasing cash available for consumer spending.

The MRA would be a great incentive for young couples to begin saving for retirement very early in their working careers. They could start IRAS and then roll these retirement funds over into a mortgage on their first home. When they sold that home, they could either roll the funds back into the standard IRA or put the money into another mortgage on a larger home.

He emphasizes that the MRA program is not a housing industry hand-out, but rather a program designed to promote the

An estimated ll5 million Americans are eligible to establish IRA accounts' Wage earners can invest up to $2,000 in an IRA, tax deferred, up to lfi)90 of their earned income. Working couples can set aside up to $4,000 a year in IRA accounts. Those funds could be put into an MRA if the bill becomes law. The present IRA law allows people to invest in stocks, bonds, and even real estate partnerships. The MRA concept is an expansion of the already established program. "

The incredible part of the whole program is that it would cost the treasury virtually nothing, since the basic program is already in place. Jobs would be created and tax revenues would be increased as mortgages were paid off early. The benefits of this proposal would be enormous to all segments of the thrift, housing, and building material supply industries' Funds attracted by MRAs would provide a tremendous pool of capital for reinvestment in new home construction."

The best part of the MRA Program is that it will benefit millions of Americans now and in their retirement. With the future ofour social security system uncertain. the MRA is one more mechanism for the private citizen in helping insure his own retirement.

A new mill for old redwood

Visitors to The Pacific Lumber Company's Mill B complex in Scotia, Ca., this spring will see something of a rarity these days-a brand new sawmill side built specially to handle large old growth redwood logs.

In an era when most new sawmills are built small to handle large volumes of small diameter logs, such a big layout is most unusual. The I l4-year-old company tore out its Mill B number one side entirely last year and replaced it with a state-ofthe-art set up which combines great accuracy with improved production.

The $2,000,000 project entailed a new inside log slip; a new live log deck; a new nine-foot Kockums high strain band mill; a new two block Filer & Stowell carriage with M" opening; new set works and electric drive from Industrial Electric; a new 8" x72" Schurman edger with infeed table, and a fully enclosed lrvingtonMoore trimmer.

Before the new machinery was installed, the foundations under the bandmill and carriage were rebuilt entirely and isolated from the rest of the mill underpinnings. Installation and all construction were accomplished with Pacific's own crews.

After the new #l side was up and running, the #2 side carriage was rebuilt entirely, and the #2 bandmill, a l0 footer, was overhauled.

The f2 edger, also an 8" x 72" Schurman, was fitted with a new infeed table, operator cab, laser lights and set works to match the #l edger. The eight-foot #3 side, which is usually run only when #l or #2 is down, got a new log deck to keep things even.

With #l and {2 rigs running, the eight hour capacity of Mill B is 300M BM. It is interesting to note that when Mill B was built in 1910, it contained two lO-foot bands and two 8-foot bands and cut l75M BM per eight hour shift.

All the old growth redwood logs cut at Mill B come from Pacific's 167,000 acres of timberland. Old growth fir is cut at Mill A in Scotia and young growth redwood and fir at Pacific's mill in Fortuna.

With the Mill B project completed the Scotia crews are now busy with a

complete renovation of the Mill A fir complex. This project is budgeted at $10,000,000 and is scheduled for completion this fall. The new Mill A will be enclosed in the same building and will also take over the adjoining plywood plant, which was closed in October. Process equipment will be

new from the log slip through to the planer chain. Eight hour capacity will be about 200M BM.

The Mill B sawmill is open to the public weekdays 7:30 a.m.-ll:00 a.m. and l:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Every year from 40 to 50,000 visitors take the self guided tour.

Deck building contest can build your sales

EALERS looking for a way to boost spring and summer sales should consider staging a redwood deckbuilding contest, a proven way to give sales a blast.

According to the California Redwood Association, dealers in all areas have produced excellent results with well planned deck contests. One retailer reported 160 entries and the best summer business in years.

To help dealers be sure that their contest is successful, the CI{A has worked out a check list of contest basics.

(1.) Make sure the entrants use redwood purchased from you.

(2.) Define who may enter. There can be separate divisions for architects, contractors and doit-yourselfers or the contest can be open to everyone. The more competition and pride of work that is fostered, the better.

(3.)

The dates of the contest should be absolute. A contest running from early spring to Labor Day will maximize both lumber sales and the time to complete projects.

use of redwood, etc. Judging guidelines must be followed exactly because for every happy winner there is a disappointed loser.

(4.)

Spell out how many semifinalists and finalists there will be. Also, clearly state who will judge and what the criteria will be: i.e., beauty, craftsmanship,

DECK BUILDING

(Continued from page 26)

should not be neglected. Talk seems to motivate people.

A Saturday clinic makes a good kickoff for the contest. A few local celebrities, refreshments, an audio visual presentation and a how-tobuild-a-deck talk by a contractor will make it an event. Demonstration decks in your yard or parking lot will attract attention and show the structural elements and proper grades of redwood.

The local press should be alerted and invited to the kick-off as well as to the judging. Be sure to provide them with the names of winners and photos of the decks. Get the permission of the homeowners involved and avoid specific addresses of owners.

Prizes are not the main incentive, but they should be adequate. Redwood lumber gift certificates from $500 to $1000 have been successful. Other firms have offered trips to Mexico, Hawaii or the Bahamas. Make all entrants feel appreciated. A small gift, such as a plant, for each contestant will make evervone feel

good about the contest.

Judging should take place on one day. Semi-finalists can be selected from the photos, but the finalists should be selected after on-site judging. The jury should include a deck builder, a landscape architect and, if possible, a local celebrity. A dealer should avoid getting personally involved with the judging.

Before setting up a contest, the California Redwood Association suggests a dealer should check it out with his lawyer, who can advise on protection against standard liabilities.

As outlined by the association, the deckbuilding contest offers room for a dealer to exercise his own creativity and sense of his market. Stand ready to provide advice, literature, La Belle cassette presentations and any other needed back-up.

Bait to Catch Shoplifters

Additional security guards and extra closed circuit cameras are conventional, expensive and relatively inefficient ways to deter the shoplifter. However, some stores are coming up

manufacturers and wholesalers

with a better mousetrap-uh, shoplifter's trap.

All the measures produce the illusion of a high security store with little or no cost.

Two of the most effective measures are the fake guard and the staged arrest ploys. In the fake guard ploy, if an employee spots a potential shoplifter, he gets on the store's P.A. system and says, "Security guard to aisle number 2 immediately." If the suspect is indeed a shoplifter, he will leave the area at once. Also, other would-be shoplifters in the store who hear the announcement will leave the store for better hunting grounds.

In the staged arrest ploy, a store manager arrests one of his employees, who is pretending to be a shoplifter. The arrest must be highly visible, usually at the entrance to the store near the checkout lines. Shoplifters usually will not "shop" at stores where shoplifters are apprehended.

Other low cost, conventional security measures include two-way mirrors. The store doesn't have to keep an employee behind the glass to monitor the customers, because the customers will never know.

Suggesting right nail for redwood pays off

lll/ITH TODAY'S construction costs as high as they UU are. it is not uncommon for homeowners and contractors to try to cut a few corners. Experience has shown, however, that you, as a dealer, should caution them that there is one time not to get skimpy and that is when the nails are being selected for application of exterior redwood siding and decking.

Proper nails also are critical for use on interior redwood paneling used in high moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Saving a few dollars by using cheap, low quality nails for these types of construction can quickly result in unsightly nail stains-a situation that cannot be easily corrected. Since the unhappiness and frustration caused by this problem often spill over onto the dealer, it is wise to do all you can to avoid such a situation.

Nail stains are caused when ferrous and other corrosive metals break down chemically after being exposed to

30 The Merchant Magazine

water and oxygen. In short, the nails rust and the natural chemicals in redwood accelerate this corrosion. To prevent this, the redwood industry strongly recommends the use of non-corrosive nails such as stainless steel. aluminum, or high quality, double hot-dipped galvanized.

Stainless steel nails are the most expensive, but in the long run they are worth it. Aluminum nails also work well to prevent staining although more care is needed when driving them to prevent the shanks from bending. The most economical satisfactory nails are those with a double hot-dipped galvanized coating. These are not to be confused with tumble galvanized, electroplated galvanized, or other galvanized nails. Only hot-dipping the nails properly in quality galvanizing materials provides the performance needed. A dealer can be of service to both the contractor and d-i-yer by keeping supplies of these nails available.

There are also several different nail shapes that must be considered. For exterior redwood siding, box nails or siding nails should be recommended. Siding nails have heads that are tapered on the bottom to allow them to be driven flush with the surface of the siding without crushing the surrounding wood. Some brands of siding nails also have thin shanks and blunt points to help reduce chances of splitting the siding.

Finish nails and casing nails should not be sold for use on exterior redwood siding. An exception to this is when they are used for application of tongue and groove siding that is being blind nailed at an angle through the tongue.

Maior Southwest wholesale firm at the 25 year mark

11NE OF the major companies in Ythe lumber industry serving the Southwest is currently celebrating its silver anniversary.

Fremont Forest Products was started in 1958 by Pete Speek and other former employees of the lumber division of Roddiscraft, Inc. of California. The new company was named in honor of John C. Fremont -the romantic and historic pathfinder of the West!

The company began as a direct shipping office wholesaler in the old E.K. Wood Lumber Co. office building in Whittier, Ca. In 1965 the company began buying cargo lumber and used the Sun Lumber Co. Berth 126 in San Pedro, Ca., as a distribution facility. At this time they also moved their first buying office from Arcata, Ca. to Eugene, Or.

In 1970, Speek negotiated a lease for 7 Vz acres at Pier 83 in the Port of Long Beach, and Fremont became the first and is still the only wholesaler in Southern California to own and operate its own dockside distribution center.

In 1975, the company bought the stock interests of two of the original owners and the company began implementation of a l0 year expansion plan.

ln 1976, the company installed a Basic Four computer, believed to be the first to be used by the lumber industry in Southern California. Virginia Allen, Fremont's controller, pioneered and perfected this completely integrated system which is considered to be one of the most sophisticated and effective systems in the lumber industry.

In June, l98l the Port of Long Beach moved Fremont to eight acres adjacent to PierE on Terminal Island and early in 1982 a long term lease was signed. This agreement gives Fremont the option to lease an additional eight acres next to the present eight acres.

Rail is presently close by the new distribution center and a new spur will be extended directly into the Fremont yard later this year. Speek says the recession of 1980 through 1982 has delayed but not cancelled plans to build two dry sheds and install milling machinery.

Fremont carries a large inventory in a wide variety of products and species and specializes in high quality lumber for the "do-it-yourself" yards, rough timbers and long lengths, which they sell in LCL quantities. They often add new species and grades as requested by customers. All items in inventory are included in their weekly Fremont Flyer mailer.

The company does a large volurne of business throughout the Southwest in both direct mill shipments (via cargo, rail and truck) and out of their Port of Long Beach distribution center either for customer pickup or delivery in both volume and LCL quantities. Don Sprague is the manager of Fremont's new dock distribution facility and Don Merrick is the assistant manager.

Additionally, plans are now complete for the construction of a new and unique headquarters and sales office located at the southern tip of Pier E, adjacent to their dock and overlooking the main entrance to the Port of Long Beach.

Story at a Glance

Fremont Forest Product's silver anniversary . . . expan. sion of their Long Beach cargo lacility continues Eugene, Or. office growing .. an early computer user, the company manages by objectives for growth.

The initial phase will include 6,000 square feet of office space. Sales personnel will be located on the main floor in an open landscape office system, promoting quick communication and the Fremont teamwork for which they are noted, according to Speek. Originally scheduled for completion in 1982, the new headquarters building is now scheduled for completion in 1984. It will replace their 4,200 sq. ft. Whittier office, and will enable Fremont to offer its customers the advantages of a complete, single-site operation, according to speek.

In April of 1982, Fremont opened a new sales office in San Diego under the management of the veteran professional, Carl Poynor. He is ably assisted by Ginnie Runeborg.

On January l, 1983, Fremont integrated its industrial division into the wholesale division under the management of Blaine Smith. The creation of one division has given the

company a greater feeling of oneness and enhanced its ability to better serve the total market in California, Arizona and Nevada, Speek notes.

As this issue of The Merchant Magozine went to press, Fremont added another trader, Dan Zellick, to its Eugene office. Dan had been with Champion Building Materials in Eugene for the past 5 years where he was a trading specialist in the Texas and Mid-west market. He will expand Fremont's marketing into those new areas.

Fremont's Eugene office is ably managed by Scott Griswold, whose sales team consists of Ralph Parr and new addition Dan Zellick. The Oregon office purchases all of Fremont's rail and truck lumber and sells directly into Oregon, Northern California and now Texas and the Mid-west.

The company management team consists of Blaine Smith, vice president and sales manager; Virginia Allen, controller; Jim Salo, credit manager; Bill Baugh, industry consultant, and Pete Speek, president.

The team meets monthly and operates within the framework of a management by objectives system. All company sales personnel are involved in the setting of new sales goals every six months. The board of directors is responsible for long range planning and the establishment of 5 and l0 year goals.

The young and articulate Whittier sales team consists of Tim Gaffney, Vince Cunningham, Ken LoBue, Pete Nevins and Paul Haacke.

All stock is owned by employees and Blaine Smith is the newest stockholder.

According to Speek, the primary goal of Fremont's employees is "to serve the needs of its customers and suppliers more effectively than its competitors. It also aims to be more effective each year while having fun earning a living and growing toward our full potential as professional lumber people and human beings."

Fremont believes that people are its most important asset. On this anniversary it thanks all of its employees, customers and suppliers (past and present) for its first 25 years of happy and successful growth. Fremont also wants to thank General Fremont for providing their motto " . . . Still Leoding The Way!"

Cole Acquires Fifth Company

Cole Industries, Inc., National City, Ca., has acquired Temecula Hardware and Lumber Co., expanding its Companies of Lumber I once again. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Temecula, a 30,000 sq. ft. building materials operation established in 1972, is now Cole's fifth Lumber I entity. In December of 1981, Fallbrook Lumber Co. became the fourth, joining the Solana Lumber Co.

tional City, and Waterstreet Wholesale Lumber Co. in National City, all subsidiaries of Cole Industries.

Wickes Attacks lts Debts

Wickes Cos. Inc. has begun to formulate multiple plans of reorganization that would seek to remove the retailer and manufacturer from court protection by mid-l984. Wickes had made one of the largest filings under Chapter I I of the federal bankruptcy law in history last April.

But the company now is negotiating with members of four creditor committees, and Wickes' officials say they hope to reach an agreement in principal in five to eight months.

Wickes will try to settle some of its $1.6 billion in total unsecured debt through a combination of cash, notes. debentures and stock. A major part of the proposal includes the conversion of some of the unsecured debt into common shares. which Wickes' officials say will "substantially dilute" holdings of existing shareowners.

Coos Head's New Berth

Coos Head Lumber & Plywood Inc. has moved from berth 190 to Berth 177 at Wilmington (Port of Los Angeles),Ca.

The company has also established a new sister company, Pacific Lumber Terminal,to work exclusively on lumber handling of cargo, rail and truck and trailer shipments. The change will allow Coos Head to concentrate on sales of lumber, plywood and related products, according to Larry Crabtree, manager. Ted Maple will now be more actively involved in sales management for Coos Head.

The new facility the firms will share includes an 80,000 sq. ft. warehouse as well as five acres for outside storage. Additional adjacent space is available for future growth. Presently, the company can handle I 0 million feet of lumber on the dock. It is served by the Harbor Belt Railroad and is a terminus for the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads.

D-i-yers Dial lor Help

Help for the do-it-yourself customer takes many forms, with Builders Emporium, the Wickes Companies, Inc., home center chain based in lrvine, Ca., having a home improvement hot line.

Back almost four years ago when they started promoting Pop Larsen as the guardian angel of home improvement, the calls averaged 25 a week. Now there are more than 1,000 a week. The number of women calling has increased substantially from 890 in the beginningto 40s/o today.

John Fudge, the real name of "Pop Larsen," a BE employee since 1958, mans the call-in service from the home office. Surrounded with reference books on painting, hand and power tools, masonry, plumbing and other home improvement jobs as well as Builders Emporium catalogs, he can field any question.

Fudge and his assistant answer calls on an 800 toll-free line from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Paint ranks first as the job needing help with plumbing second, accord-

ing to Fudge. In summer, most calls refer to construction and painting. In winter, most people need help with plumbing, but the advisers have helped with everything from freeing a jammed garbage disposal to building a concrete patio.

Another Pop Larsen service is providing "Pop Larsen Tells You How To" brochures detailing 28 home

repair and remodeling jobs. These are available in the BE stores as are free phone stickers listing Pop's telephone number and applications for the Pop Larsen Club.

Memberships entitle a d-i-yer to receive a free monthly newsletter containing how-to projects, new product information, seasonal maintenance and repair advice as well as discount coupons.

New western hardware/home center show

The opening run of the Winter National Hardware & Home Center Show and Hardlines Conference far exceeded initial American Hardware Manufacturers Association guidelines and expectations and established the new show as an important contribution to the hardlines marketing year.

"The January 3l-February 2 Las Vegas show attracted a total registration of 21,185 persons" reported AHMA executive director William P. Farrell. "This is a more than encouraging turnout for a first-time show, far exceeding registration figures that many older shows have yet to achieve."

The AHMA sponsors and conducts the Winter National Hardware & Home Center Show and Hardlines Conference.

"The show went far beyond our goals: exhibitor space was approximately 212,ffi net square feet, while there were more than 900 exhibitors showing in-depth lines of products drawn from across the hardlines industry spectrum."

Buyers from the East and South who regularly attend Hardware Industry Week/National Hardware Show in Chicago each August were exposed to a whole new universe of manufacturers. Fully one-third of the exhibitors, many of them from the West Coast or from western states, had not previously exhibited in the Chicago show. Prior to this show, many of them were an untapped and virtually unknown source of products for the eastern market.

Exhibitors commented that this direct access enabled them to gain a better first-hand understanding of both the western market and of the approach their western sales forces take in selling to it. They were also in a position to give buyers a more complete understanding of their programs and product lines than many had had previously.

AHMA industry programs, particularly the "What's New?" New Products Exposition enj oyed success the first time out. The new products display was strategically located at the very center of the exhibit hall, and featured 373 new products. Both its high visibility and broad selection contributed to its draw and a steady stream of visitors passed through the exposition during the run of the show.

The seminar and speaker program also had strong support. Major speakers William G. Mashaw, Managing Director, National Retail Hardware Associationand Jack Anderson, syndicated columnist and investigative reporter, together drew some 1,5(X) Hardlines Conference attendees.

Mashaw developed the theme: "DlY-Marketing Bonanza of the Next Decade;" while Anderson's

speech focused on the distance between the official stance taken by the federal government and the information his staff develops in its investigative reporting work.

The seminar portion of the conference was oriented towards retailers who responded in force. A standingroom-only crowd was in attendance for the presentation on "Modern Store Design Techniques," and both "Ten Steps to Better Retailing" and "How to Use Co-op Advertising" drew over 100 interested retailers.

The final day of the show, retailers heard a detailed presentation on participation in programs offered by Pro Hardware, Inc., Liberty Distributors, Inc. and Sentry Hardware Corp.

Export Assistance Program

In keeping with the international profile being developed for the Winter National Hardware & Home Center Show and Hardlines Conference, a full range of programs was offered through the AHMA to bring together international buyers and exporting exhibitors.

"We are confident that this show was a strong first-time success," said Farrell. "It exceeded our expectations in every respect. Next year we will set our expectations even higher, and, with this kind of base to build from, we will exceed them again."

The 1984 Show will be held February ll-13, in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nv.

Phone Early for Results

Telephone calls made early in the day have a number of advantages. First, people usually do their planning in the morning and your request can be scheduled in with a higher priority. Second, there is time left in the day to get calls returned if someone's out of the office. Third, answers to projects that have been delayed will be available.

Helpful OSHA Inspectors

Because of new laws, OSHA inspectors must give a company specific technical advice on how to correct defects they find during their inspections. The new rules can be a boost to companies, saving thousands of dollars in private consulting fees.

their homes longer, but they are improving them to fit their families and suit new lifestyles. Redwood is often used for room additions both on the inside and outside. Jordan said there has been an increase in the use of redwood for accent walls and ceilings. Deck additions are seen as a way to increase living space without the cost of a complete room addition. The popularity of spas and hot tubs has created another strong market for redwood in providing decking and amenities. The majority of the remodeling that is going on is being done in affluent neighborhoods which make up redwood's strongest base of customers.

Lee Roy Jordan Redwood estab. lishes contact with customers by attending homebuilder and building supply shows. Company representatives attend meetings of the builder associations.

"It's surprising how many people here think of redwood as just decking material. We always display redwood siding in our booth to give them an idea of some of the other uses. " Jordan is an advocate of

showcasing his merchandise. Both the offices in Dallas and Austin display redwood paneling and Jordan's new home on a 560 acre working cattle ranch is clad in redwood knotty rustic siding.

Jordan says he's excited about his new home and its location near Wills Point-about an hours drive from Dallas. He spends weekends and holidays there with his family and is looking forward to making it a permanent residence.

Rustic redwood siding was a natural choice for the ranchhouse. "We wanted it to look like it belonged on the ranch. What we didn't want was something that looked like it was brought in from town. " Working with architect Larry Lacy, Jordan helped design a luxurious 3600 sq. ft. home with a typically-Texas profile.

Jordan chose redwood rustic sidings for the ranchhouse because the knotty texture which characterizes this new redwood product worked well with the rural design. The sturdy, thick-butt, rabbeted bevel pattern used is air-dried for stability and creates a strong shadow line and is one ofthe easiest to apply. Jordan ex-

plained that redwood rustic sidings are gaining in popularity because they offer many of the traditional redwood values at an economical price.

Some of the other features built into the ranchhouse include inviting porches and decks that run along three sides of the house. Inside, a soaring l0 x 28 natural stone fireplace sets the tone for entertainment and living areas. Wood paneling and wainscotting combine with the use of textured plaster to create a feeling of country living at its best. The first floor has three bedrooms, two-anda-half baths and second floor combines a bunk room and game room complete with pool table.

"After three years in a moist, coastal climate my redwood siding is still vibrant with its natural grain and color."

" Af ter 90 inches of rain with no overhang and with a direct sun expossure, our redwood siding is still beautiful and the nails are not bleeding. We are amazed with this product."

" l was satisf ied with the oroduct I used over the last five years until I discovered Penofin. I have never seen anything that would build such a hand rubbed finish on exotic hardwoods."

The remarkable results of Penof in are no accident. Penofin is a new chemical lormulation. lt is a discovery lhat will revolutionize the wood fihishing industry. The linseed oil based formula that is still prevalent today, dates back to the 17th Century Europe. This outdated method was long overdue for change in our technological world of science and chem istry.

D-l-Y Cedar Paneling

P&M Cedar Products, Inc. has a line of interior wood paneling designed especially for the do-ityourselfer.

CedarPro interior paneling is made from a high quality Western cedar that, unlike the more aromatic species ofcedar, does not have an enduring fragrance. It comes in 3" and 6" widths and in clear and knotty woods, all reversible for either a rough-sawn or smooth surface.

An interlocking tongue-andgroove cut on all four panel edges makes it easy to install using only simple hand tools. Panels, which can be nailed or glued vertically, horizontally or diagonally, are of varying lengths and are light weight.

The paneling is kiln-dried and re-

portedly has the same appearance as thicker lumber when installed. It comes wrapped in easy-to-carry packages weighing about l5 pounds.

Dry Cleaning

The Savogran Co. now offers Mintex, a waterless hand cleaner for wholesale and retail distribution. The paste-type handcream, packaged in l3-oz. plastic containers with press-fit tops, is formulated with lanolin to help protect skin from chapping and drying.

When applied to a soiled skin area, it reportedly liquifies and dissolves dirt, grease, paint, oil and other hard-to-remove stains.

Roof Display

A free-standing merchandise display is used to promote sales of Masonite Corp.'s newest roofing material, Woodruf, in building supply stores and showrooms.

Each unit is made of painted tubular steel legs with a series of painted and silkscreened hardboard panels that screw directly into them. Actual Woodruf samples are attached to the display to simulate their eventual use.

A clear plastic pocket is strategically located for free brochures. The displays are shipped fully knocked down to be assembled with a screwdriver.

A Nutty ldea

A newly patented vandal-resistant fastener for use in securing solar panels, exterior light fixtures, fences and other property is from The Tufnut Works.

Made of case-hardened steel, the Tufnut reportedly is reusable and virtually indestructible. Its angular sides cannot be grasped with any conventional tool, yet it does not require a specialty wrench to either install or remove.

Ready Railings

A do-it-yourselfer reportedly can assemble a room divider, balcony or stair railing from Mansion Industries without complicated sawing and attaching of balusters and fillet pieces.

Promontory is a patented product made from Western hemlock. The balusters (vertical pieces) have discs crafted on each end that press into pre-drilled sockets in the rail at any pitch from 0'to 43'. They self-lock to form a solid wood-to-wood connection that locks top and bottom rails together without hardware.

The molding piece that comes with each rail is attached with finishing nails to cover the disc/socket connection.

The railings are available in four kit sizes: 5'and 7'angle run kits and 6'and 8' level run kits. Each includes rail. balusters and instructions. Newel posts are sold separately.

Paneling with a Rebate

A new family of genuine hardwood paneling along with a sale support program that includes a consumer rebate with qualifying purchase is from Champion International.

The 23-panel line-up has been structured to offer a broad selection at a variety of prices. Point-of-sale support is built around high-impact sales aids. A "double-sale" rebate program, in effect through April 16, offers consumers up to $24 from Champion in the form of a two-party store check to purchase additional merchandise from dealers.

Marvin Windows has introduced the cathedral style Marvin Terrace door, a swinging patio door with the appearance of an arched sash.

The door can be used for retrofitting, remodeling or new construction. It is constructed with nonfingerjointed Ponderosa pine with an expanse of glass, and is said to have many energy-saving features.

The arched effect is accomPlished in the construction of the sash rather than with arched sash over the door frame. Therefore, the new stYle is available in standard retro sizes, as well as in 8' heights.

DEALER INQUIRIES WELCOME

For redwood decking, non-corrosive box nails should be sold.

Nails should be long enough to provide adequate holding power. Loose nails and loose lumber can result in warping and splitting of the wood. The nails should be long enough to penetrate through the redwood siding and sheathing, or decking if a deck is being built, into solid wood framing at least I % inches. Increased holding power can be obtained by selecting a "ring" shanked or annular shanked nail. Spiral grooved nails also provide more holding power initially but tend to unthread themselves as changes in climate occur.

A dealer should advise the recommended nail placement for each siding pattern. Deviating from these can oftentimes result in poor siding performance. Each siding pattern corresponds with a unique method of nailing which has been developed through decades of experience by the redwood industry. Details on these recommendations can be obtained by writing to the California Redwood Association, One Lombard Street, San Francisco, Ca.94lll.

As a dealer you have an obligation to provide a selection of nails that possess non-corrosive properties. You also have a responsibility to see that the proper nails are selected and that the user is aware of the proper nailing techniques Then, not only will the owner enjoy a securely fastened. streak-free redwood structure with the Ieast amount of maintenance, you as the provider of materials will be recognized for your part in a successful project.

National Dealers Back M.R.A.

The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association is supporting the Mortgage Retirement Account concept introduced last year by Senator John Tower of Texas, placing it high on its priority list for the 1983 session of Congress.

The M.R.A. would be a retirement savings program similar to the Individual Retirement Account program. Wage earners could invest up to $2,000 per year, not to exceed 10090 of earned income, or $4,000 per year for a working couple or $2,250 per couple with one wage earner, on a tax deferred basis for use toward their retirement.

The program would allow the saver to invest LR.A. funds into a qualified home mortgage, which would be a first mortgage secured by the earner's principal residence. The investment could be made in the form of a mortgage prepayment or an initial mortgage down payment. On a regular basis, the saver could use his allowance to "buy down" the principal in order to pay off the loan.

Planned to apply to young couples as well as those near retirement age, the M.R.A. at present is seen as separate from the I.R.A. progr.rm although Congress would decide the final details.

Promo Kit Helps Dealer

The savvy dealer today is the one who keeps up with merchandising by attending seminars, reading merchandising literature and keeping his eye on the competition.

G0L0RFUL llags and signing attract cuslomers to sales events. Retailers can use new publication as a guide in preparing for event.

To help him out, Palmer G. Lewis Co., Inc., anAuburn, Wa., distributor of building materials, has put together a retail promotions kit which gives information on truckload sales, product demos and home shows with a few added twists, according to Chuck Lauber, PGL advertising and promotion v.p.

The kit, packaged in a file folder for handy reference, contains all the tools necessary to produce a weekend truckload sale such as banners, pennants, price cards, tips to make the

sale successful and a checklist to see that things are done on time.

For example, the retailer is reminded to reserve a truck. "Believe it or not, this has been overlooked many times," explains Jack Gilbert, PGL promotions coordinator.

The Palmer G. Lewis staff is well qualified to organize a kit such as this. They conducted over 150 truckload sales in the State of Washington alone last year.

D-i.yers Take Up Plumbing

Do-it-yourselfers will purchase $7 billion worth of plumbing fixtures at the retail level in 1995.

Predicasts, Inc., a Cleveland, Oh., based business information and market research firm, targets high repair costs and the growing popularity of lighter weight, easy to install replacement parts as the factors behind the expansion. The d-i-y market, which has increased three-fold over the past 15 years, will remain a major growth sector.

Housewares Consumer Study

A new study of consumer attitudes and buying habits of housewares products is being undertaken by the National Housewares Manufacturers Association as the latest step in its ongoin g marketing research program for the industry.

This third consumer survey, which will provide an update to earlier studies thatdrew 1974and 1979profiles of the American housewares consumer, will be carried out by the independent marketing research firm of B. Angell & Associates, Inc.

"Our new consumer study will

seek an up-to-date analysis ofcurrent consumer needs, attitudes and preferences," Ronald A. Fippinger, NHMA managing director said, "in order to help both manufacturers and retailers of housewares recognize and reach their marketing objectives in the face of a changing consumer marketplace.

"The demographic and social fabric of our country, as reflected in the 1980 U.S. Census," he continued, "plus the impact of the prevailing economic situation during the past few years, make it timely to update our consumer research."

Based on in-depth questionnaires submitted to 2,000 households selected at random from a nationally projectable sample of 100,000 households, results of the research will be published by the association and distributed to exhibitors and buyers at the July 1983 NHMA International Housewares Exposition.

Gifts From The Forest Include More Than Wood

llt HEN we think of forest pro-

ducts, lumber, plywood, particleboard, and paper come to mind. But today's forest products industry is making great strides in using all of the tree. Consumer products are being made from parts of a tree that were unusable just a few years ago.

Up to half, or more, of a tree is lignin, a complex natural chemical that binds together the wood fibers in a tree. This and other silvichemicals from trees are being used today in thousands of products vital to man. It is fair to say that our modern lifestyle is as closely tied to products of the forest as it is to products of the oil field. Let's see what we n1ean.

Cellulose

The chief ingredient in wood cells, or fibers, is cellulose. The nrolecules in cellulose are complex sugars joined together in long

chains. To make paper. the lignin which binds the cells is dissolved, and the resulting pulp is rolled into thin sheets.

Cleaned and washed wood pulp is virtually pure cellulose. and chenrists have discovered other things which can be done with it beside make paper. Chemical-based cellulose is used to make tool handles, photographic film, packaging films, glasses frames, molded packages, combs, brush and mirror backs, acetate filanrent yarn, knobs and handles, luggage. gunstocks. fishing floats, toothbrushes. plasl.ic pens. football helnrets and hard hats, electrical tape, coatings. and lanrpshades just to nanre a few things.

Pulping l,iquids

The black liquicl that was left over alter dissolving the wood cells created nrany disposal prclblenrs until chemists recognized it for what it was-a vast storehouse of contplex organic chenricals with a variely of econonrical uses. Pole Houses Preserve New Mexico Setting

The Mescalero Apaches, among the most progressive of Indian tribes, have turned to a versatile architectural tool-pole-design houses-to help preserve nature's .pristine setting for their nearly half-million-acre southcentral New Mexico reservation.

The earth and all that grows upon it are held in age-old tribal veneration, and for their newest housing project, funded by a $1,368,000 grant from the Housing and Urban Development agency, the Mescaleros have chosen pole-supported dwellings as most in harmony with their environmental goals. The pole-designed housing project is believed to be the nation's first on an Indian reservation.

Tribal president Wendell Chino reports that pole structures "allow man to stake out living space upon the earth with a minimum of violence to its eternal form since the houses can be threaded among existing trees and other vegetation, and even on a steep slope there rarely is a need to alter the soil's natural contour."

In keeping with tribal guidelines the 25 two- and threebedroom homes were kept a minimum of 250 feet apart with at least a full acre of ground surrounding each structure. There are no fences to create man-made barriers or obstruct a sylvan vista of Ponderosa and pinon pine, spruce, oak and aspen on the verdant foothills of 12,003-ft. Sierra Blanca.

All poles utilized in the project were pressure treated using the "Cellon' ' process, developed by Koppers Company, Inc. Violent winds which during winter months often gust at up to 70 miles an hour at the project's 7400,-ft. elevation were one of the factors entering into the ultimate choice of a pole foundation. Heavy seasonal snows added still another consideration.

Long after most of the other tribes gave up the old ways, the Mescalero Apaches, descendants of the great

REDWOOD Q&A

(Continued from page l2)

has been proven to erode less in extreme weather.

Q: Can sealing redwood be a problem?

A: If you mean finishing redwood, I don't think there's a problem. We include finish information in almost every piece of literature we produce. Users can minimize problems by following our guidelines. Literature also covers methods for removing stains if necessary. We recommend the use of water repellents on redwood used outside. If you are referring to extractive staining, that can be a problem, but more often than not, it's a specification problem. The extractives are drawn out of the wood with the moisture as it dries. Kiln-dried lumber is less likely to produce stains than

unseasoned garden grades. In most cases where you would use unseasoned lumber, such as decks and fences, some staining doesn't present a problem. In other cases, the answer is to use dried lumber.

Q: Can color change in redwood be prevented?

A: I don't think any wood can stand up to sun and weather and still retain that "fresh milled" look. We recommend the use of a clear water repellent with a mildewcide for exterior redwood. This gives the wood a natural look and stabilizes the color at a buckskin tan. If someone wants a darker red, or any other color, I'd suggest using a semi-transparent stain. On the Pacific Coast, there is a partiality toward the driftwood gray color of weathered redwood. People often bleach redwood to hurry the natural weathering process. Ifa bleach is used, here again we recommend one with a mildewcide.

Q: Does second growth redwood's high percentage of sapwood provide the same protection against decay, rot and insect attack as old growth redwood?

A: It's redwood's dark-colored heartwood that has the rot resistant and insect resistant extractives. The lighter colored sapwood is similar to Douglas fir and other whitewoods in decay resistance. We recommend builders use all-heartwood grades of lumber in decay trouble spots. The heartwood grades are: clear all heart, select heart, construction heart, merchantable heart. Parts of second growth trees produce clear all heart lumberjust as old growth trees produce some knotty, merchantable grade lumber. Grademarked redwood is true to its grade. If you buy one of the all heartwood grades, you'll know you're getting decay and insect resistance. In addition, you can look at the boards. If it is all cinnamon-red colored heartwood, the protection is there.

Q: How long will second growth redwood last when in direct contact with the ground?

A: We really don't know. There aren't any numbers available on the difference between young and old growth durability. Because redwood is a natural material, we have to accept the fact that there will be differences from board to board. We know, for example, heartwood taken from the butt of a tree is more durable than heartwood at the top of the same tree. There is a higher concentration of extractives in the heartwood farthest from the pitch of the tree.

Q: Can rustic redwood sidings compete with cedar for durability?

A: By definition, rustic redwood siding permits sapwood as well as a limited number of knots. This economical product was developed to compete with lower priced knotty cedar siding and by all reports it is doing just that.

Q: Is finger-jointed redwood gaining in acceptance? What are the problems in its performance?

A: There is an increasing acceptance of finger-jointed redwood. We're seeing it used in different applications where a few years ago it was mostly used for fascia. Builders are beginning to realize it's an ideal way to get top quality redwood grades at a lower cost. They are using finger-jointed in many places where a paint or a heavier finish is going to be used. As far as performance, there are very few problems. Finger-jointed redwood is the most stable of all redwood products.

Q: Do you foresee any other solutions to the problem of short lengths of redwood?

A: For the dealer. I think the solution to short lumber is to create some demand for them by promoting small projects. We have some Construction Tipsheets that give plans for benches and planters and other projects that use short lengths. Dealers who have built a couple of the projects and displayed them in the store along with the copies of these inexpensive tip sheets have been successful at moving short lengths. When you price shorts individually and offer some ideas, they can bring in a profit.

Q: What is the impact, now and in the future, of second or young growth redwood on the availability of clear and clear heart lumber?

A: There has been a shift in the proportion of clear, knotless grades to knotty garden grades produced annually. We will continue to see more knotty redwood-garden grades and rustic sidings. But, there will still be elements of the industry producing old growth redwood products well into the future and there will always be clear and clear all heart redwood from the second growth trees. However, we cannot expect the volume of these products that we have had in the past.

Torula yeast is a high protein product made from wood sugars spent in the pulping process. It has l7 nutritional trace elements, including four to five times the amount of iron found in uncooked spinach or raisins! Type S Torula is used in baby foods, cereals, imitation bacon bits, baked goods, beverages, vegetarian food, and dietary preparations.

Type F Torula is used in feed supplements for cattle, hogs, fish, chickens, and mink, and Type FP goes into pet foods. Torula has been found to make bees and lobsters grow faster.

Resins

Several tree species, especially pines, contain resin, the sticky material that oozes from wounds on

the tree. Resin can be refined into rosin which is used by violinists and baseball pitchers. It also can be distilled into turpentine.

Resins and other oils found in wood are important ingredients in paint, varnish, adhesives, asphalt, lubricating oil additives, menthol, camphor, printing inks, carbon paper, fungicides, rubber and latex products, soaps, disinfectants and polishes. Synthesized essential oils are used in chewing gum, mouthwash, peppermint candy and toothpaste, menthol cigarettes, lime aftershave, soap, and shampoo.

Wood flour and melamine resins using cellulose filler are principal components of dinnerware, electrical recepticals and parts, toys, caster wheels, toilet seats, handles for cooking utensils, telePhone housings, camera cases, washing machine impellers, radio and television cabinets. and other appliance housings.

EnergY

The changing price of crude oil has caused us to look for alternative energy sources. Among these is the forest.

Many Americans, particularlY in

the Northeast, are going back to wood stoves, and one Power company in New Hampshire has converted to totally wood fired boilers for their generators. In California, a forest products manufacturer near Eureka, through the burning of wood waste, can suPPlY enough energy for itself, the adjacent small town, and still have some to sell the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

The use of wood for energy has serious implications for the future management of our forests and the availability of many consumer goods that are by-products of wood processing. lf wood is used for energy, it will mean that less wood is there for other uses unless we increase production from all commercial forest lands, public and private.

Renewability

One thing the forest has going for it is renewability. With proper care and attention, trees can be grown again and again on the same area. The relatively long growing cycle, several years instead of several months for agricultural

Because of the large number of consumer products which originate with the tree. there is no doubt that our modern lifestyle rs inexorably tied to the forest.

As we look to the forest for energy needs or for silvichemicals to substitute for petrochemicals, we may become even more tied to the forest. Fortunately, we are dealing with a renewable resource. which. if managed with skill, can provide its gifts forever.

Winner of the top citation, Lumberman of the Year, was Pete Peterman. Among members 0f the strictly social club present were (1) Don Reel, Craig Kincaid, Jim Summerlin. (2) George Eeckman, Charlie Bohnhoff. (3) Dennis Johnston. Milan Michie, Jack Buchanan. (4) Pete Peterman, Barry Heppner, Ken Tinkler, "Woody" Toal. (5) Dave Shepard, Rob Kincaid. (6) Mark Michie, Charlie Wall, Pete Bower. (7) Clint Bower, George Caudill.

Cost-cutting Tips

Businesses looking for cost-cutting procedures or areas in the budget that can be cut should consider the following.

First, information gathering shouldn't be cut back. On the contrary, during hard economic times, a business needs more information. Studies have shown that retailers less hurt by recession have added to their information systems on sales and inventories.

Personnel matters should be handled efficiently. Don't just lay off a certain number of employees; monitor the actual need for personnel and adjust schedules accordingly.

Third, profitability of products is more important than sales volume. Companies should study the profitability of products when setting priorities for expanding some lines and reducing others.

Elms share similar qualities

ELM TREES are found all over -rhe norrhern hemisphere with the white elm (Ulmus americana\ in the eastern half of the United States and Canada and the rock elm (Ulmus thomasi) in the eastern regions of both countries. The English, Dutch and wych elm of Europe as well as the nire from Japan also are important.

As a wood, elm has acharacteristic appearance. The growth ring figure is prominent with coarse texture and an often irregular grain. The wood is pale brown, sometimes with a reddish tint, although wych elm has a greenish cast. The white elm timber tends to resemble English elm with a straighter grain. The wide sapwood is pale, but the heartwood is the typical elm brown with a reddish tinge.

Rock elm which has no distinction between sapwood and heartwood is light brown. With a straight grain, it has a finer texture and a greater strength and density than the white elm. It averages about 49 pounds per foot in the seasoned condition as compared to 38 pounds per foot for the white elm.

White elm seasons readilv with

medium shrinkage while the rock elm is inclined to check and twist with high shrinkage. Generally, elm is not particularly strong nor stable.

All elm is classified as non-durable, subject to fungal attack. It does not take preservatives readily. However, the wood has a long life in

Story at a Glance

Elm grows in many countries unstable, lacking durability . . . tolerates water well . . widely used in cooperage industry.

waterlogged conditions. It is good for structural uses where it is permanently wet. The famous Rialto structure in Venice is said to stand on elm piles. Rock elm has been a long time favorite for dock and wharf constructions, ships' fenders, bent frames of small boats, stringer, rubbing strips and belting. Its use in boat building has declined because of its susceptibility to decay.

Rock elm is fairly hard to work by hand but is satisfactory in machining, finishing clean and smooth. It has good nailing and screwing properties and takes stain, varnish, paint and polish well. White elm works in a similar fashion except for being inclined to a woolly sawn surface. Both woods are good for steam bending.

White elm is used extensively in both the U.S. and Canada in the slack cooperage industry for staves, heading and hoops. It also is used as veneer for cheese boxes and other veneer products. Some is used for furniture, caskets and agricultural machinery. It is frequently used as a substitute for rock elm although it is not as tough or shock resistant.

Time to Speak Up

It is important for all business people to take a stand against the unfair political influence of the union bosses.

I recently took such a stand against the union's unreasonable demands and lost a considerable amount of money. Our country can no longer put up with the constant decline in productivity and the demand for more pay for doing less. We can no longer put up with the union's blatant disrespect of law and order. The unions are not in favor ofthese laws, yet, they demand that we obey other laws which they have sponsored for the decline of our country,

Can't more Americans speak up? Write your elected officials and send copies of these letters to several local chambers of commerce, other organizations and elected officials. Indicate that you are sending copies and you will get answers.

Ring White Collar Crime

Dipping into the till by dishonest employees can be combated by using television surveillance and shopper services, padding cash drawers to create deliberate overages and shortages, conducting surprise audits and cash counts and sending audit letters to customers to verify refunds.

To protect your goods, security people are able to apply outside surveillance and polygraph tests and set traps using unwashable dyes, fluorescent dyes and chemical sprays.

Because public law enforcement agencies are often ill-equipped to handle white collar crime investigations, an in-house security staff is useful to curtail plundering.

Conditions Can Invite Theft

Retail researchers have found that if a store has sloppy maintenance, inadequate lighting, tall displays, multiple exits, and lacks proper sanitary facilities, it's probably a target for internal theft.

Mrs. Allison is survived by her widower, Robert, and two sons.

Frank W. Kirk, lumber sales manager at Potlatch Corp., Spokane, Wa., died of a heart attack in that city on January 18. He was 59.
