GROWING STRONG
South Bay Redwood has been "Growing Strong" in Southern California for some 30 years and our Orange plant is one of the f inest remanufacturing facilities in the lumber industry. We are equally proud of our newly-acquired Northern California Division, Sonoma Wood Products, in Healdsburg. In addition to the increased capacity from another f ine remanufacturing mill, Sonoma adds the extra dimension of an excellent fingerjoint plant.
Our two plants can draw from an inventory of about 30 million board feet of quality redwood and cedar.
At South Bay we're not too big to care. We care about you, the customer, and your needs. We make every effort to ship what you want, when you want it and we'll stand behind our quality and service.

f T wasn't that anyone was very surprised
I that the US. Senate and the House of Representatives both passed their venions of the bill to enlarge Redwood National Park. What raised the eyebrows was the size of the margin of yes votes. The final House vote was 328 in favor with 60 opposed.
Even allowing for the shameless political log rolling (an ironic term considering the subject) by the chief sponsor Rep. Phillip Burton (DCalif.) it seems a remarkably lopsided victory for a cause that had more emotionalism than facts with which to sell its case.
Saving the redwoods is a job that was long ago accomplished. Yet the men and women who sit in the Congres and who are quick to refer to themselves as the nation's leader, are still unable to believe the facts even when exposed to them. The timber companies' case has been presented many times, both to the news media and Congress. Yet the cheap shot of a vote for saving the redwoods was too much for our decision makers. Emotionalism carried the day again in the nation's capital.
It's not enough to say the jobs lost to park expansion will be replaced by welfare checks or retraining. The very idea is insulting and demeaning to the men who do the tough and dangerous work in the woods.
The idea of expanding the park by 48,000 acres is also insulting because the case of the need to protect the existing park is weak indeed. As the leading opponent to the bill in the House explained over and over (apparently to deaf ears) expansion is unnecessary because erosion and siltation in Redwood Creek poses little threat to the redwoods in the existing park.
But as the old saw has it. ''Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up." The Congressmen were prejudiced in favor of the seductive idea of saving the redwoods and they shrewdly reasoned their constituents would feel the same.
Whatever the final shape of the law President Carter is expected to sign, the law will be a monument to emotionalism just as surely as it is to the redwood trees.

How to sell redwood carrv-out clears
f O HELP DEALERS SELL more carry-out lengths
I of clear redwood lumber, a new California Redwood Ass-ociation promotion will push a special series of do-ityourself tipsheets on small redwood space-saver projects.
Nationwide newspaper publicity will feature redwood lumber bookshelves, bathroom vanities and plant furniture designed to use kiln-dried clear and clear all heart grades of redwood 1x2s, 1x4s, lx6s, and 2x4s in 4 to l0'lengths.
One page illustrated tipsheets have complete materials lists for each project, specifying exact redwood requirements for easy dealer handling.
Redwood Projects for Plants, first of the series that appeared in selected newspapers last year, became one of the most popular CRA tipsheets ever. Bookshelves and bathroom vanities, promoted in '78 as simple winter weekend projects to brighten any room, offer great potential for dealers' redwood lumber sales through winter and all year.
Tipsheets tell consumers how easy-handling short lengths of clear and clearall heart redwood lumber ensure outstanding dimensional stability, low-maintenance endurance, and genuine natural beauty unmatched by other woods. Lightweight redwood also lacks pitch so it'ssmooth to work and machine.
Easy-care redwood requires no finishes to withstand moisture from plants, household wear and tear, or weather if used outdoors. However, application of clear water repellent for bookshelves and plant holders, and polyurethane or alkyd resin varnish for all kitchen-bathroom uses, will ensure top performance.
Redwood lumber dealers stocking tipsheets such as Projects for Plants and Space-Saver Shelves along with short redwood lumber can capitalize on growing consumer
demand for natural, top quality materials for d-i-y furniture that will personaltze and improve every part of their homes.
Proiects for Plants includes a rugged redwood stand, 40" high for two potted plants, a l4xl6" platform for hanging plants, and a Parsons style redwood bench I 2" high and up to 4-/z'long.
Redwood Space-Saver Shelves includes modular bookcase units 2' or 4' long x 27" high, with tilt-back shelves for paperbacks, and top bin for tape cassettes. Units can stand alone or link together to fit small corners or wrap around a sofaback. Other redwood ootions are a hineed lid for the cassette bin, and simple bookends.
Retail promotion ideas? During a crowded Saturday or weeknight, a local carpenter or in-store salesperson can build these projects to display with tipsheets and other CRA literature. Plant furniture or bookshelves can be used as traffic builders to be finally auctioned, raffled off or given away as doorprizes.

More retail aids for Desigh-A'Deck
?HE California Redwood AssoI ciation spring-summer promotion will add new retail aids to its successful Redwood Design-a-Deck Plans Kit, making it easier for retailers to use the kits to stimulate big-ticket sales of garden grades of redwood for decks.
A new counter display holder for 20 kits converts from the shipment carton; a new tipsheet, How to Boost Your Redwood Sales with Redwood Design-a-Deck Plans Kit; and a step-bystep slide show, How to Build a Red' wood Deck, are useful for sales training seminars or in-store consumer clinics.
Last year, Design-a-Deck became the CRA's biggest-ever garden grades project with over 35,000 kits sold. Design-a-Deck exhibits were in home and trade shows from New Orieans to California and the kit won a sales literature award.
This year, Design-a-Deck, with even bigger retail promotion potential, has a new low dealer price so it's a profitmaker by itself. In addition, kit designer Richard O'Grady is available to help dealers set up deck displays and d-i-y clinics using new aids for bigticket redwood lumber sales.
Copyrighted Redwood Design-aDeck includes a 20-p. manual, punchout patterns, graph paper and plans showing how to design and build modular redwood deck sections with benches, stairs and railings to fit any house and yard. Complete materials lists on plans sheets help dealers handle lumber orders quickly and easily.
F.asy-to-build deck sections measure 6'x8' to 14'x20', with an average deck using around 1 100 bd. ft. ofredwood garden grades - construction heart and construction common - as specified in materials lists. All Designa-Deck planning materials are reusable for adding deck space and amenities year afler year, with great repeat and tie-in saies potential.
The kit's design proved so successful in 1977 that several major retailers, including the Western branches of Wickes Corp., now plan to use it as the basis of redwood promotion with
sales training seminars, deck displays and regularly scheduled in-store clinics for consumers on deck building.
Here's how to use the CRA's new Design-a-Deck sales aids for your own promotion. The new CRA tiPsheet covers advertising, displays, in-store special events and sales seminars. You can use all or part of the package and add your own ideas as well.
Displaying the new kit holder and advertising with free newspaper and Yellow Pages art can launch your program. To encourage deck sales, kit price can be rebated on lumber purchases. A display deck built by a local contractor or store emPloYees can show off kits, with promotion banners and a color Design-a-Deck ad poster for extra interest.
A display incorporating stePs, benches, railings, garden furniture and plants can be built for customers to walk on. Or consider raising the deck three feet for consumers to use as a work surface for laying out plans kits during how-to clinics.

More retail sales aids have been added to the proven Design-ADeck package to make it easier for retailers to stimulate big ticket sales of garden grades.
Part of the deck's understructttre can be left exposed with sales personnel on hand to explain construction and the kit. The CRA slide show on deck building with 45 coior slides and a script can be presented on or next to the display, and can also be adaPted to automated A-V systems to run continuously during big-traffic days.
In-store deck clinics on SaturdaY afternoons or weeknights can draw up to several hundred customers. Some clinics may not pay off immediately, Homeowners must plan and budget for decks. But by the second year, experienced retailers have found (Please tunt to pase 54)

Clear & clear all heart redwood
NEW 1978 California Redwood Association campaign for clear and clear all heart redwood lumber grades is spotlighting contemporary building-remodeling ideas with new emphasis on upper grades' retail promotion potential.
How to turn 1978's great redwood potential to retail profits? Dealers should stock top quality redwood lumber grades and CRA tipsheets, design booklets and data sheets. In addition, paneling displays, personnel training and do-it-yourself clinics are suggested to build long-term sales and customer loyalty.
and
Current publicity includes more construction and technical product information than in the past, geared to 1978's dynamic d-iyers, who represent half of 1977's $35 billion remodeling market. Through ads and in-store displays, retailers can promote the many d-i-y advantages of redwood lumber paneling to tie in with CRA ads and articles in shelter, architect and specifier magazines.
Redwood boards with vertical or flat woodgrains and a smooth or rough texture can be mixed and matched in grooved channel rustic and shiplap, or smooth tongue and groove patterns, according to the CRA. Board dimensions 4, 6 or 8 inches wide, 3/8 to I inch thick, and up to 20 feet long can also be mixed.
Other d-i-y advantages: compared to 4x8 sheets and even wallpaper, redwood lumber can be fitted around doors, windows and corners with minimum waste and error. Lightweight redwood boards are free of pitch for smooth sawing and nailing, and are also easier to lift and apply to walls than materials requiring careful gluing, balancing or folding.

/rrA ( I 848- I 934) has atrained legendary status in the annals of West Coast lumbering not just for the things he accomplished but for the circumstances under which he accomplished them.
Before the time of data processing and instant communications, before air travel and even fork-lifts, A.B. Hammond organized a huge firm that was the world's largest manufacturer of redwood lumber, that operated lumber yards throughout California, that owned sawmills in Oregon, and that built and operated raiiroads and coastal schooners.
Like many entrepreneurs of the last century, Hammond began humbly. He worked as a logger in the woods from Maine to Washington, following the trade he learned as a boy in New Brunswick, Canada. For a time he worked on a riverboat, and in 1867 he fought Indians in Montana.
During the next 30 years, Hammond was involved in storekeeping, banking, railroading and salmon packing. He built two railroad lines in Montana and owned two others in Oregon. But eventually A. B. Hammond always returned to the lumber business.
The Hammond Lumber Co. began to take shape during the 1890s. During that period he began acquiring valuable timberland near Astoria, Or. By 1900 he owned and operated three sawmills in Oregon.
Then, in 1900, Hammond and five other investors (including Henry E. Huntington of San Francisco's "Big Four" and a founder of the Central (now Southern) Pacific RR) purchased the John Vance Mill and Lumber Co. for $600,000 and the Hammond
Lumber Co. was born. The investors acquired a mill in Samoa, redwood tirnberlands. lurnber schooners and the Eureka and Klamath River Railroad. Hammond was president of the firm from 1900 to 1934.
In 193 1 Hamrnond Luntber becanre the leader in the redwood industry when it absorbed the Little River Redwood Co. With the acquisition 83-yearold A. B. Hammond saw his firm become the largest owner of old-growth redwood.
By 1948 Hammond had pared its redwood operations to one rnill at Samoa and one at Eureka, Ca. The mill at Samoa consisted of four band saws, a gang saw and two resaws. The buildings and storage yard of the Samoa plant stretched for miles along the West shore of Humboldt Bay. It was marked from afar by its 308 foot white concrete smoke stack topped by the two white stripes of the company flag.
The Eureka mill had two band saws and two resaws. Both mills had adjoining planing mills, remanufacturing units, dry kilns and machine shops. Logs were carried from the woods to the mills over the company's railroads.
The two mills were the world's largest producers of redwood lumber in 1948. They sawed l l l million board feet that year, or about 100 carloads per week. In that same year Pacific Lumber Co., at Scotia, cut over 105 million feet while Union Lumber Co., in nearby Mendocino County, cut 86 million.
The Hammond mills, both the redwood mills and the original Oregon sawmills, comprised only the production arm of the company. The distri(Pleose tum to page 57 )

lnucnrtoN of employees was lone of the oft-mentioned needs of our members of the Lumber Association of Southern California when they responded to the query of Troy Bussey, keynote speaker at the 24th Annual Management Conference in Palm Springs last November.
The association can and will pro- vide the vehicle for education of your employees on a continuing basis throughout 1978.
At the present time there is a Products Knowledge Course available
at a very reasonable price. It consists of two looseleaf volumes covering the following subjects: lumber, doors/ windows, millwork, plywood, cement, masonry, paint, specialty products, interior paneling, ceilings, flooring, carpeting, insulation, roofing, siding, and gypsum.
After the student has read a chapter, there is an examination for him to take. This reinforces the learning process and enables the student, as well as his employer, to verify the knowledge level on each subject.
At the conclusion of the course, each student is issued an attractive Certificate of Completion, appropri- ately framed so that it may be dis-
played indicating to all that he or she has achieved a certain proficiency level in knowledge of the lumber and building materials industry.
Some employers have utilized the course as an incentive. Upon completion the student receives not only the recognition of the certificate, but also receives a previously agreed upon increase in salary.
It's encouraging to see the names of former students appearing as assistant managers and managers in many operations. They are living proof that education, or knowledge, is power. Plans are presently underway to have sessions in basic management techniques; salesmanship for both retail and wholesale employees; and possibly some sessions in advanced management, both personnel and financial.
The theme for 1977 was "Get Involved." We plan to give the members every opportunity to get involved. Education of the employees is just the beginning. organize and belong to a guard union but are prohibited from belonging to other unions because of obvious conflict of interest considerations.

ff I-EASE write your Senators and f oppose S. 1883, the Union Organizers Act.
Time is desperately short if we are to stop, or even modify, the harsh provisions against employers in the legislation that organized labor is pushing as Labor Law Reform, S. 1883.
The title is a misnomer. This is a bill to enable labor unions to organize more easily throughout the country.
Listed below are five of the worst provisions of the bill. Your Senators may not be fully aware of how bad they can be for employers. Almost any one of them might be enough to make a Senator stop and reconsider
what a vote for such legislation might do to his employer constituents.
( 1) The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) may raise employee wages and benefits from the time that an employer is judged to have refused to bargain on a first collective bargaining agreement until agreement is signed.
(2) Double backpay with interest may be ordered by the NLRB for any employee who claims to have been discharged because of union activity during the organizing of the union.
(3) Security guards may affiliate with any union so long as the union does not represent other employees at the same workplace. Guards may currently
(4) Whenever the NLRB determines that an employer has willfully violated the law, it may bar the employer from Government contracts for three years. The penalty would apply company-wide, even though the violation might occur at a single plant.
(5) The NLRB is required to hold "quickie" representational elections within 15 days of the filing by the union of an election petition. Where unions need more time, 45 days is authorized; and in cases of "exceptional novelty or complexity" 75 days is permissable.
These "reforms" have already passed the House and are slated for Senate action very soon. To stop it, or even to tone it down, you will have to contact your Senators quickly. Your protest is important!

The care and feeding of redwood
FIEDWOOD RETAILERS can pro|r[vide valuable technical infornration on handling and care of redwood lumber with California Redwood Association data sheets, tipsheets and product information booklets. Dealers recommending timetested methods for nailing and finishing redwood can assure top performance while building a reputation for reliable quality and servlce.
CRA-recommended finishes, nailing and uses of each redwood grade can be demonstrated on small in-store paneling displays or on redwood lumber siding, paneling, shade trellises and decking that may be incorporated into your whole building. This can combine salesboosting product displays with correct technical information that will draw many builders and architects as well as' homeowners.
PRODUCT INFO SUMMARY: STORAGE
Retailers should store k-d redwood lumber inside, under cover and away from moisture, dirt and grease. If it comes pre-packaged, lumber should be kept in factory-applied wrappers. Redwood garden grades may be stored outside but under cover and off the ground.
Kiln-dried lumber in short, leftover or cut-offlengths can be merchandised for small d-!y projects in easy-toreach bins. Setting up bins for 4-, 6- and 8-foot lengths of 1- and 2-inch lumber can tie in with new CRA publicity and tipsheets on plant holders and bookshelves this year (see Page 8, "New CRA Space-Savers Sell Short Redwood Lumber.")
NONCORROSTVE NAILS: HOW TO NAIL
For kitchen, bathroom and all exterior redwood applications, CRA recommends aluminum alloy or stainless steel nails with annular ringed or spiral grooved shanks for maximum
holding power. Donrestic top quality hot-dipped galvanized nails can also be used if care is taken that the galvanized coating isn't damaged during nailing.
Noncorrosive nails cost slightly more than other nails but they avoid stain streaks from moisture reacting with redwood's natural decay-resistant exlractives. Common iron. copper. cement-coated or poor quality galvanized nails should not be used near moisture. indoors or out.
How to nail siding? Nail shanks should penetrate 1% inches into studs and solid wood sheathing; composition or pressed fiber sheathing require longer shanks to penetrate 1% inches into studs. Pre-drilling nail holes can prevent splitting near mitered corners or board ends.
Nails should not go through the tip of an undercourse on lapped bevel siding, and at least l/8-inch should be allowed for expansion clearance. Shiplap and tongue and groove do not require expansion clearance.
If nails are countersunk. oil-base putty can be used to fill nail holes when siding and paneling are to be painted. This causes some discoloration, however, so when a clear or stain finish is to be used, non-oily fillers are recommended..available in a redwood color or tinted with dry color.
Story at a Glance
Technical information on handling and care of redwood lumber, plus tips on nailing, finishing and maintaining redwood f inishes . . how to provide your customers with the information they need for handling and care.
This spring and summer, nlany d-i-yers and others installing redwood decks should know how to nail l-inch deckboards to minimize warping, splitting and cupping frorn the slight shrinkage that often occurs with green lumber during the first eight to 18 nronths. Noncorrosive l6-penny box nails should be used, one nail per bearing on alternating board edges.
COATING & CARING FOR REDWOOD
An open cellular structure and lack of pitch or resins help redwood accept and hold paint and other coatings better than other woods. Redwood actually requires no finishes, however, for most uses, weather wears off only 17a inch of unfinished wood in 100 years. C-innamon heartwood and creamy sapwood toncs will darken in time, then gradually blcach to driftwood gray.
Applying onc or two coats of bleach containing mildewcide produces a driftwood effect cluickly; hosing off coated surfaces will specd the bleaching action fu rther.
To maintain a more characteristically redwood color tonc, a watcr repellent preservative with a ntildewcidc is reconrnrended for application every l2 to l8 months to eliminate darkening and slow natural color changes tct buckskin tan. Water repellent alscr provides a good basecoat for oil-base or latex emulsion stains. Brush application is best; if sprayed on, coatings should be dry-brushed imrnecliately, but never with wire brushes or steel wool.
For paint finishes, an oil-base primer makes a good basccoat 1or acrylic latex emulsion paint topcoats or oil-base topcoats. In all cases, only compatible top quality coatings should be used and manufacturer instructions followed. Proper vapor barriers, air (Please tum to page 66 )

E)Eutl DEALERS in our indusf ltry have been considering electronic accounting and computer management for several years but within the past two years the interest has increased significantly.
The big boost in business the past two years, plus inflation, have increased the total gross sales for many to all time highs. Although there is no gross sales guideline that tells you when you should consider computers for your business, a large number of dealers begin serious consideration when gross sales reach $ 1 .5 to $ 2 million annuallv.
Recognizing the increase in interest and the technical aspects of computerization, our Western States Lumbermens Council has organized an Electronic Accounting and Computer Management Workshop, to be held at the San Francisco Airport Hilton Inn, Mar.2l*23.
The WSLC is comprised of the six Western retail lumber and building material dealers' associations. It develops programs and sends bulletins on many subjects of common interest to all dealers.
The workshop was organized because of the increased interest and because of the difficulty for any one dealer to talk with those who have gone through the agonies of computer birth.
Dealers are approached by vendors attempting to sell the most exotic and most costly equipment in their line. There is little sincere consideration given to the basic needs of the dealer and to help him grow into this new fleld. The cost of computerization is expensive but the equipment has reached a high state of the art and the cost has remained relatively the same.
The workshop will present dealers who have computerized their operations. They will provide a background on the benefits, problems and pitfalls. An ex-computer salesman (now a retail lumber and building materials dealer) will tell you what the computer salesman will do and what you should look for. A doctor from the University of Santa Clara Business School will give the background and development of computers and their small business appli cation.
Vendors will give you a presentation on their equipment ano programs.

The retail paint market
Retail volume of trade sales paint will rise from $3 billion in 1976 to $5.8 billion by 1985, according to a new report by Frost & Sullivan, Inc., New York City.
The 300-page study, "The Trade Sales Paint Market", reveals that "home owner spending for paint and decorating will grow 81% during the 1977 -1985 period, compared to a5lVo increase for the contractor sector.
The volume forecasts for 19751985 are:
The report sees interior paint sales increasing 19% through 1985, with water-based preparations then accounting for 86.5% of total volume, compared to the current 78.8%. Significant changes are expected to occur within retail distribution channels, with retail sales forecast to total $5.8-billion by 1985, compared to $3-billion in 1976.
Analyzing outlet performance, the general merchandiser category is expected to double its 1976 dollar sales, with home centers moving to the forefront with a 141% volume gain. However, hardware and specialty paint stores will undergo a reverse action, with paint sales moving gradually away from their doors.
The Frost & Sullivan report points out, "market demands are conditioned by dissimilar forces." This is exempli-
fied by orders for industrial finishes hinging on demands for products they are destined to coat. On the other hand, trade sales paint volume is activated by distinctly different stimuli, mainly in the form of housing starts, money supply and personal disposable income.
Extremely active competition exists in the form of the variety of highly marketable items as zubstitutes for paint sales, including: prefinished wall paneling, wall papers, ceiling tiles and a host of plastic, glass and prefinished wood fibre compositions.
The growing popularity of many of these specialty substitutes has already forced paint producers to enhance their products through greater durability and reduced cost per square foot covered.

Sustained yield in fish & redwood
Fifty thousand fingerling steelhead fish are swimming peacefully in a new rearing pond built by The Pacific Lumber Co., the giant redwood producer, on its forest land at Yager Creek in Northern California. A second pond will take another 50,000 flsh.
The fingerlings are brought from a California Department of Fish & Game hatchery and are fed as many as four times a day by a Pacific Lumber employee. Food consists of pellets of junk fish, soybean meal, corn meal,
and vitamin and mineral supplements. Water piped in from a nearby creek is a stimulting 590.
When mature, the fish will be released at several locations in the Van Duzen river drainage area.
Since 1973 Pacific has been raising steelhead and salmon in a pond at Scotia, Ca., the company's lumber and plywood manufacturing site. Steelhead grown recently at Scotia were released at an average size of 12"*15" into the Eel River which flows bv Scotia.

Pet methods of checking service problems are often based on assumptions that occasionally have proven correct. But it isn't necessarily true that Symptom X is always caused by Problem Y. There may be several causes and each much be considered carefully before good parts are discarded, systems tediously pulled apart and other components damaged without real understanding of what caused them to malfunction.
The problem: the engine will not start. A mechanic takes a look at it and determines that the battery is discharged. Well enough. The battery is replaced because it's faulty! T'ain't necessarily so !
Or he replaces the battery because "it's cheaper to replace than to test." 'T'ain't necessarily so! Because the replaced battery may also fail.
The next guess is that the alternator is at fault, although the ammeter doesn't indicate a problem. The alternator comes offand anewonegoes on. The truck is started from a "slave" unit and is quickly on its way to another discharged battery.
Pet method reasoning continues and next identifies the reeulator as
Lift truck batteries
By Nat Wells Manager, Service Education Allis-Chalmers Corp.
likely being at fault. After all, a new battery and alternator have been installed. What else is there? So a new regulator is installed.
Let's look at how this problem should have been handled. Here is a simplified procedure:
(1) Check water in battery and hydrometer reading if possible. Variation in the reading is very important for diagnostic purposes.
(2) Clean battery terminals.
(3) Check condition of alternator drive belt - (loose, glazed, etc.)
(4) Check wiring terminals to alternator, regulator, etc.
(5) Check output of alternator. The
discharged battery offers a prime load for the alternator.
(6) Allow battery to completely charge and test with hydrometer and load tester. If it fails, replace battery.
Step 6 needs further explanation. Economic and working conditions can dictate that the battery be replaced, although, "'t'ain't necessarily so" that the battery is faulty. Cost of charging can outweigh the cost of the battery. Several things can cause a rundown battery outside of a faulty system, such as excessive idling with electrical loads. Be sure you check the total system before replacing that battery and going on your way. Otherwise, the new battery can be "old" very soon.

Bee grade is A-OK
FIETAIL lumber dealers, alreadY fllooking ahead to sPring, know as soon as the weather clears their customers will launch outdoor building projects, and the demand for durable, handsome and economical building materials will soar.
There's one Product that meets those standards beautifully, GeorgiaPacific garden grade and Bee redwood. This is the ideal time to plan springseason inventories to include an ample quantity of both. Redwood's decaY resistance, easy workability and good looks are well known. And G-P's Bee and garden grades Put redwood in a price category comParable to other commercial softwoods.
Ranking in grade between clear and select, Bee is Georgia-Pacific's own mill grade. Kiln dried and stable, it features mixed heartwood and sapwood with the greater portion of each board being heartwood. Bee redwood contains no combination of defects which might hinder its serviceability, and the result is lumber with all redwood's advantages at suprisingly low cost, according to Georgia-Pacific.
Garden grade redwood, as oPPosed to the more expensive "appearance" grades, features knots and grain variations which enhance its rustic quality and lower its price. The characteristic look and texture of Bee and garden grades complement glass, stone and other woods and fit naturallY into

The moulding crunch
By Rick Kellso Sales manager - lumber Medford Corp. Medford. Or.
I f YOU'RE a dealer stocking I solid pine lineal mouldings, you've probably recognized some significant price increases in the past months and are finding it difficult to buy more mouldings at anY Price.
Instead of cussing out Your suPplier for doing this to you, you should bat him on the back if he even has stock to offer you.
The problem was not created bY the moulding manufacturers but rather it has been the lumber manufacturers' inability to produce the volume of moulding and better grade lumber necessary to satisfy the needs of the market place. Why? Several factors have contributed to the Problem.
Last fall. the Western Wood Products Association revised the moulding grade rule for lumber to accommodate the end users needs better. The rule change was basically a tightening of the grade and a reduction in volume has resulted.
However, the biggest contributor
to short supply is that the sawmills of Southern Oiedon and Northern California have been sawing a heavier mix of small diameter logs which Yield less moulding grade lumber. These smaller logs are from the salvage timber stands in the forest fire areas of the past summer. The logs were available at very good prices and the sawmills have realized good returns despite a heavy common grade recovery.
Although most moulding manufacturers expected a tight lumber supply in the first quarter, the severity of the situation was not anticipated and no substantial inventory build-ups occurred in the fall which could have buffered the situation.
Certainly one cannot overlook the demand for finished mouldings. Building activity remains high, although the weather in many areas has temporarily halted job site activity. But once the weather breaks the pace will pick up again.
At this time, suPPlY will not im-

prove until the loggers.can return to the woods and bring out logs that yield more moulding and better grades of lumber. Until then, look for supply problems to exist and prices to remain high. Don't be on your moulding supplier's back, he is doing the best he can to get you your moulding products.

'f HE Pacific Lumber Co. has just I completed the first decade of its second century. One of the largest redwood producers, Pacific is well-known Io the The Merchant's readers. and we thought it interesting to update their major activities.
Palco redwood plywood was just introduced in 1967, when the company had its l00th birthday, and in the first years of the decade production was vastly increased.
In 1970 the Eastern sales office at Chicago was moved to executive headquarters in San Francisco. All sales administration was then in one building.
ln 1971 Palco initiated a program in cooperation with the California Redwood Association for determining redwood's fire resistance. Official Underwriters' Laboratories' tests showed l" redwood and 5/8" redwood plywood to have sufficiently low flame spread that they met the requirements of the Uniform Building Code Class II materials. This has been a very advantageous characteristic for commercial building uses. Most all other wood species must be fire-retardant treated to fit Class II.
ln 1972 the Fortuna. Ca.. "small log" saw mill was consturcted to pro-
Palco at 1OO plus 10
cess redwood and Douglas fir harvested from the company's young growth stands, from thinning ofyoung stands, and from small old growth. "Small logs" at Fortuna are up to 43" in diameter.
In June 1972 the company started making its fir-sawn Douglas fir plywood sidings, which have become an important part of its product line. Production volume was increased in 1971 and will be further increased this yeaf.
An unhappy event on August 8, 1972, was the sudden death of Stanwood A. Murphy, age 53, president and great grandson of the company's founder.
ln 1973 a variety of new products from young growth redwood was initiated. Another corporate activity
in the financial field was the development of an investor relations program.
ln 1974 a unique mixed car unitized loading process was developed-called Palco-Pak-which has become very popular.
In 1975 The Pacific Lumber Company's stock was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the Pacific Stock Exchange last year.
ln 1976 Pacific built a fish rearing pond at Scotia and last year built two more at Yager Creek. These are described in an article on page 28. Thus fish are added to the company's policy of sustained yield.
ln 1977 unitized mixed order truck shipments into the Midwest, South and East were emphasized. More than 40% of shipments in 1977 were moved by truck.

Redwood timber management
As our forests are a renewable natural resource, it only makes sense that they should be looked after and cared for. One of the leaders of the industry when it comes to this
aspect of timber management is Harwood Products.
Harwood Products is a family-owned operation with two mills and a remanufacturing plant located in Mendocino County, about 150 miles north of San Francisco. One of the mills is located in the small hamlet of Branscomb, a picturesque little community nestled in the heart of the redwood and Douglas fir country. The other mill and the remanufacturing plant are located in Willits, about an hour's drive to the south of Blanscomb on Highway 101.
The Branscomb operation handles the majority of Douglas fir and the Willits mill handles most of the larger redwood logs. The rentanufacturing plant in Willits is set up as a finger-jointing plant, accounting for the high recovery rate Harwood enjoys.
For the last several years, Bud and Jack Harwood have managed the firm fbunded by their father, Bud, Sr. However, it really is a family operation as there are Harwoods involved in all aspects of the company, from falling timber, to office work, to quality control. In addition to this, the friendly teamlike spirit displayed within the company (PLease turn to page 48)

(Continued from page 46) makes for an excellent working atmosphere.
A large majority of the redwood milled at the two facilities is logged on 60,000 acres of company-owned timberland. However, as the demand for redwood is growing in leaps and bounds, outside sources are constantly being developed to keep the mills supplied. Many independent loggers are employed on a contract basis and currently logging operations are planned from Santa Cruz in the south to the Oregon border in the north.
As redwood comes in such a variety of grades, all suitable for their respective purposes, it is only natural that Harwood wants to recover iust about all of the useable
wood products connected with the mills. The finger-jointing plant is one of the prime means of accomplishing this.
The remanufacturing plant, known as the Willits 'B' plant, has been in operation for about 10 years, with Harwood running the operation since '75. Short end cuts and other cutable material is remanufactured into clears, thus producing a marketable item. With the latest gluing and jointing techniques being employed, near-perfect 20-22' boards can be produced, although 20' is the preferred longest length.
For sheer design effect, the clear and clear-heart fingerjointed material is hard to beat. The contrasting patterns offer a striking relief from a set tone and many contractors and decorators are utilizing it more and more.
As the demand for redwood is climbing, Harwood Products has an eye on the future. Almost the entire forestry branch spends the winter months re-seeding and re-planting. In fact, the entire year-including the timber falling season-is spent with an eye on the future. The firm has a reputation for clean logging activities and as respect for the environment and as future tiqrber yields play such an important part in the overall picture for the future, it makes sense.
In fact, Bud Harwood is one of the leaders in the industry who has spoken out in favor of legislation governing forest activities. Of course, Bud and Jack are opposed to legislation that has no basis in current fact. But as Bud puts it: "In the long run, controls will be better for us all. For years the future timber yield of our forest land was neglected and it has only been quite recently that legislation has come in to protect wildlife, stream beds, etc. It costs a little more to get the product out of the woods but in the long run, it means that there will be more useable timber there indefinitely."
Big Western Tool Market
A new survey on the ownership of tools quoted by Sunset Magazine notes that Westerners have an above average index of ownership of five basic power tools, and the highest regional index for four of the five.
The tools in question are a portable electric circular saw, electric jig saw, chain saw, electric drill and electric sander.

(Continued from page 38) the outdoor environment.
There are dozens of applications ideally suited to G-P's Bee and garden grade redwood. An attractive redwood garden shelter, for instance, can set off a private seating area and provide work space as well. A redwood trellis complements formal landscaping arrangements. And a maintenance-free redwood deck extends indoor living space and makes relaxing outdoors comfortable even when the ground is wet.
Among smaller-scale projects geared to the novice do-it-yourselfer are planter boxes, garden screens and benches. Construction time on all these projects can be kept to a minimum since redwood needs no surface protection. It weathers naturally to a soft grey if left unfinished, and the wood itself contains no pitch to gum up workmen's hands or saws.
G-P Bee Redwood is at home indoors as well. Redwood ceilings, panelings and mouldings create a fresh, informal architectural accent. Bee Redwood's price is as attractive as its appearance, and customers are pleasantly surprised at how economical their designs are to build.

DESIGN-A-0ECK plans kit and redwood deck display set the scene for in-store consumer clinic that can boost sales of redwood garden grades. Exposed deck section showing underdeck construction can also be used during sales training seminars.
$outhwest ohead
(Continued from page t 0 ) redwood sales doubling or tripling.
Newspaper ads should announce clinics, and inventories of redwood lumber and plans kits should be ready for immediate sales. Some retailers pre-package lumber for several common deck sizes, sometimes with price breaks. One suggested clinic schedule is to stage one "early bird" session in February or March, and then regu- lar weekly or semiweekly clinics April July.
For travel expense reimbursement and a small fee, kit designer O'Grady can be available to build a display deck in your store, stage an initial clinic, and train sales employees for future shows.
A local contractor. familiar with local building codes and conditions, might also lead clinics in return for valuable business exposure. Or your store might discount lumber for an employee to build a redwood deck at home for experience to lead clinics or clinch deck sales during the week when _the regular clinic leader isn't arouno.
All these deck promotion ideas can be used without Redwood Design-a-Deck, but all emphasize the enduring quality and easy-care beauty offered only by redwood lumber, and the Design-a-Deck kit is the sales clincher that brings it all together. The CRA brochures Redwood Grades & Uses and Redwood Garden Grades & Uses can be used for sales training or consumer product information.
Other deck finishes, deck-building tools, and plants, garden furniture and other deck tie-ins can also reoresent big sales.

(Continued from page 17) bution arm, which at one time employed 600 men, was primarily based in Southern California and its dimensions were no less impressive.
Hammond's Terminal Island yard was the hub of the company's distri' bution operations. Hammond began operating on the island in Los Angeles harbor when it acquired the assets of Whiting Lumber and Supply Co. in April 1905. The "Terminal" yard covered 39 acres and included a 1300 foot long water dock.
The "Terminal" yard received shipments of fir and redwood from the mills by both ship and rail. It stored up to 25 million feet of lumber and had a complete remanufacturing mill. There orders were assembled in trucks and trailers for Southem California housing developments and for the Hammond retail yards.
The "Terminal" yard furnished framing lumber for the Lakewood tract (near Long Beach) where 13,000 homes were built in the early 1950s. In 195 I "Terminal" delivered I l8 complete jobs to Lakewood, a total of 1,214,000 board feet, in one day!
"During the late 40s and early 50s," according to Alfred D. Bell, Jr., Hammond's step-grandson who served as general sales manager of Hammond's Samoa Mill, "if the deliveries fell below one million feet a day, Mr. Hammond wu in Los Angeles the next morning to find out what was the trouble."
Twelve large Mack trucks and trailers comprised the "Terminal" delivery fleet in the 50s. The operation used 12 carriers, 3 lift trucks,21 tractors and 74 wagons, plus a storage crane 1,200 feet long with a span of 110 feet, and a truck loading crane.
Normally Hammond's own lumber vessels were seen tied up at'oTerminal." The company built four double-end' ers during World War I. In the 1920s
the firm operated eight ships: five steelhulled vessels, including the Astoria, Missoula, Samoa, Covena and San Pedro; and three wooden ships, the Santian, Halco, and Trinidad.

They reportedly totally seal surface pores. Because of the extremely low viscosity and low surface tension of these compounds at the time of application, they literally soak into and thoroughly coat and seal the microscopic pores at the surface of the concrete. After fina.l curing, the complete surface integrity of the coating acts to increase the tensile strength of the concrete's surface layer approximately 100%. By contrast, conventional soft skin coatings do not have this strengthening capability.

Not recommended for redwood outdoors are latex primer, "shake and shingJe" type paints, and oil treatments, including boiled linseed oil. Clear film varnishes and synthetic resins should also be avoided on redwood as they can yellow, crack or peel within a year of application.
Some sidings come from CRA mills pretreated with water repellent, prefinished with stains or preprimed with paint. Carefully controlled factory conditions make mill applications cheaper and better than field applications. Factory-coated sidings, packaged for best protection and easy handling and storage, can be installed in bad weather with minimum finish problems later.
Redwood indoors can be coated with clear sealers, stain waxes, light- ly pigmented stains, or no finish at all. In kitchens and bathrooms, four to five coats of clear flat or staintextured polyurethane or alkyd resin varnish will withstand hard scrubbing or waterspots. Away from direct water or grease drips, clear polyurethane or alkyd resin sealers can be used.
MAINTAINING FINISHES
Most can be washed with water, or mild detergent and water. To remove mildew, redwood can be scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush and a mixture of one cup trisodium phos- phate, one cup liquid household bleach and one gallon of warm water, then rinsed thoroughly. Mildewcide should be added to subsequent coatings.
Redwood's colors can be freshened by scrubbing with a solution of one cup trisodium phosphate per gallon of water. To restore redwood's cinnamon tones, this solution can be followed with application of four ounces of exalic acid crystals dissolved in one gallon of warm water, always in a non-metallic container.
We are especially expert in custom milling. We've built an enviable record of service to our customers over more than three decades.

Air dried redwood
I AST year. The Pacific Lumber
L Co. started air seasoning redwood commons at its Fortuna sawmill, which produces most of its commons. An additional 4l acres of property with warehouses were acquired as seasoning facilities.
As a result, the company now has stock available. It is made in two grades: select and better, and construction common.
Select and better, somewhat a Palco specialty, according to the company, is a small sound knot grade, ideal for above-ground construction such as decks, garden structures, heavy fascia, heavy trim, and a multi-

tude of similar uses. The air seasoned construction common has the important advantages of being air seasoned.
Currently avallable sizes in both air seasoned grades are 2"x4" through 12", and 4"x4".
Advantages of air seasoned lumber are well known to retailers and stocking wholesalers, but it's worth emphasizing the principal advantage of Palco's new air seasoned products:
(1) Quality of the lumber is increased because it is seasoned in the rough. This makes the usual seasoning defects removable when the pieces are surfaced after the air seasoning is completed.
(2) Lightness of weight provides for easier handling, from car unloaders through builders.
(3) Seasoned pieces, especially in
on stack tops protect top layers from excessive exposure. select and better, have a broad range of uses - from garden grade applications on up through trim uses.
Palco modestly contends that its air seasoned select and better is the finest product thus far produced from young growth redwood.
Because it specializes in mixed car and truck shipping, these new airseasoned common grades are available with a large variety of other redwood lumber, fir lumber and plywood products in mixed orders.
Their popular specialties for California for years have been mixed truck and trailer loads of redwood commons and green fir in multiple items. One particularly popular item is full sawn redwood merchantable grade. And now there is an increased production of Douelas fir.

As an outgrowth of its other operations, Hammond Lumber developed a subsidiary, the Hammond Shipping Co., which was incorporated on May 12, 193 1 and dissolved on December 6, 1949. Initially the firm operated only as a coastal common carrier.
The shipping company operated out of San Francisco, with branch offices in Los Angeles, Eureka, Portland, and
Seattle. In Los Angeles Harbor the firm operated at Berth 187 (Wilmington); in Eureka, at the foot of "E" Street: and in San Francisco at Pier 20 and later Pier 18.
ln 1942 Hammond Shipping was appointed a general agent of the War Shipping Administration and the firm transported troops and war material for the U. S. Armed Forces. It operated in all principal U. S. and South American ports, Alaska, the South Pacific, China, the UK, Mediterranean, and, after V-J Day, in Japan. During the war the firm operated 28 vessels, including the Arcata, Astoria and Brunswick, and government-owned Liberty and Victory ships.
One of the Liberties was named for A. B. Hammond and another was christened *M. V. California Rt:dwood." One of the firm's vessels was
sunk by a Japanese submarine in Alaskan waters in mid 1942, and another was sunk by aerial torpedoing in 1944 n the Mediterranean. Nine lives were lost as a result of the two incidents.
The head office of Southern California operations was at 20th and Alameda Streets, Los Angeles, an area blanketed today by industrial plants and offices. Hammond acquired 28 acres there from Whiting Lumber in 1905.
The Alameda Street yard stocked kiln-dried, finished Douglas fir, redwood and Ponderosa pine and it had a sash and door plant and a massive hardware warehouse. Roofing, wallboard and plywood were inventoried. A complete hardwood lumber operation was incorporated with the Alameda Street yardin 1923.
H. W. Mcleod was v.p. in charge of the Southern California operations from 1908 until 1951. He and his brother, the firm's first employee, were lifelong friends of A. B. Hammond. Hammond Lumber maintained its general offices in San Francisco.

Advertising for more sales
Advertising related problems consume large amounts of time of retail lumber and building material dealers.
Realizing this, the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association advises that professional ser-
vices would be a good investment. They determined that the ideal solution would be for each building material dealer to have a highly competent advertising agency in their local area thoroughly familiar with promoting the products the dealer sold. This seems to be a problem in some communities, particularly smaller ones.
Effective communication between an agency and the dealer is a must. An agency must be experienced in the industry to be able to periodically suggest types of products the dealer might like to feature in promotions. The dealer needs to select items by brand and model, and, in turn, an experienced agency could work up copy as thoroughly as possible for delivery to the local newspaper.
Acceptance of the agency should be predicated on high quality artwork and advertising ideas, timely promotional suggestions, exceptional communications procedures between dealer and advertising agency and reasonable cost for the services pro. vided.

Conserving walnut
ONSERVING WALNUT by using a computer to determine cutting patterns for gunstocks is the goal of two Western Illinois University mathematicians.
Larry Cornwell, associate professor of mathematics, and graduate student John Kalita of Wilmette are developing a computer program that will place the maximum number of gunstock pattems on a flitch (three-inch thick board) of walnut.
Their project is part of an effort by the wood industry and the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to conserye natural resources and still meet the demands for finished wood products.
Kalita is devoting more than 20 hours per week on the project. His internship is funded bv American
Story at a Glance
Two scientists are evolving a computer program to determine the most efficient cutting patterns for gunstocks.
Walnut of Kansas City, Mo., Walnut Products of St. Joseph, Mo. and Ekstrom Carlson of Rockford, two wood products industries and a router company seeking research methods to improve their productivity.
"We can put as many different straight edge gunstock pattems on a board now as we want." said Kalita.
Each flitch contains defects (knots) that cannot be used in a gunstock blank. A perfect piece of wood is required for the craftsman who tools the blank into a stock.
Building a program to work around defects, the two mathematicians initially placed one pattern on the flitch 16 times. Modifying that approach, the computer expanded the number of pattems to 19 on the same sample flitch.
Now the computer program can accommodate different gunstock pattems on the same flitch. If one day's order is for three styles of brand A gunstocks, the three separate patterns will be placed on the flitch in a manner that avoids defects and gets near the maximum yield from the walnut.
At any time, the computer program can be adjusted to select one stvle of brand A and four stvles of
brand C gunstocks on flitches of walnut.
The decision on where the patterns are placed are made by the computer in less than 20 seconds, a speed that should meet the production standards of the wood industty, aecording to the two mathematicians.
The technology being developed is the software phase of the conservation effort in the wood industry.
"We are obliged to conserye our timber because it is one of the few renewable nafural resources," said Kent A. McDonald, wood scientist for the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI.
McDonald's research has included the development of a defectoscope which can survey a flitch and, using an ultrasonic scanner, provide a computer the information on where defects in the board are located.
According to McDonald, the present human decision making process for producing finished lumber from trees can be done by computers, with savings of 300 cubic feet of trees in the production of 100 cubic feet of finished wood.
With high quality walnut values at $l to $2 a board foot (a measure equal to one twelfth of a cubic foot), the project has economic implications.
"We don't try to put money into the saw miller's pocket, but he can make more product and money by using the same amount of materials and applying research to get a better yield," McDonald said.
The techniques used by Kalita and Cornwell are not limited to the wood industry, they said. Using a computer to move geometric shapes on defectridden surfaces could also be applied to other industries. such as leather. textile and aircraft in order to increase utilization of materials through conservation.

Indoors or out, redwood clear grades offer a design versatility that no other wood can boast. Contrasting grains, ranging from the bold zebra stripes of heartwood to the more subtle tones of creamy sapwood with almost no contrast, contribute a design element suitable for interior or exterior architectural specifi cation.
The Marshburn residence in Whittier. Ca.. is a showcase of redwood clears. Ceiling applications in many of the rooms are especially effective, cementing the warmth of redwood with the inherent beauty of the clear grades. An added advantage was the economy offered. Redwood clears are the most economical wav to purchase
Redwood design versatility
knot-free, kiln-dried redwood. They retain all of the traditional advantages of redwood while offering versatiiity through the surface textures, patterns and widths availabie.
While redwood clears are a natural choice for interior ceilings and paneling, the product is just as suitable for exterior siding, fascia, trim, decks and outdoor furniture. The design applications are many, the results a beauty that endures.
The redwood clears in the Marshburn residence were supplied by Simpson Building Supply Co., Cerritos, Ca., through their customer, Dickenson Lumber & Hardware Co.. LaHabra.

Eliminating the fastidious and slow job of piecing together short random lengths of redwood paneling to achieve the proper random plank look, witlr shared amounts of cinnanton tones and creamy sapwood, Sirnpson Timber Co. has introduced Random Plank LaHonda paneling.
The 318" thick planks of clear grade redwood have been fingerjointed into quick-to-put-up 8', 10' and I 2' lengths. They are tongue and groove for perfect fit, light in weight, easy to handle, and simple to install with panel adhesives, nails or staples.
The new lengths rapidly transform walls, cathedral entryways and ceilings in a fraction of the time originally needed. An old hallway becomes a handsome entry. A touch of class is added. along with energy savings. in a wall or ceiling application.
The planks may be applied vertically, diagonally or horizontally to achieve a distinctive pattern. They may be used in a small area as an accent or backdrop.
In areas where traffic is not heavy, Random Plank LaHonda may be left unfinished. Where the wood is subject to wear and oiling, a sealer or lacquer is recommended to preserve the natural beauty.
Random Plank LaHonda is packaged in 4" and 5" widths. An 8' length of 4" will cover 6J sq. ft., a 12'length, 100 sq. ft. The planks in the longer lengths differentiate the paneling from Simpson's regular LaHonda.
