Hang In There, Baby!

ED ang INDEED are the people who are not ltl i*pr.rr.d with redwood, whether they view it as a mighty tree in a cathedral-like grove, or as a manufactured product that boasts remarkable properties. Equally impressive are those marvelously concentric growth rings that are barred when an old tree is harvested. They graphically relate the tree's life, often over hundreds of years, and experts can decipher an amazingly complete history of the weather conditions throueh which the tree has grown.

The expert eye quickly discerns that drought conditions such as we are now suffering through in the West are nothing new. Indeed, they are the punctuation to those other periods when abnormal rainfall causes problems of another sort. As the old saying goes, ifit isn't one thing it's another.

The scarcity of water in the West is very serious, but critical as the situation is, some among us are already over-reacting. The noises they make indicate they never expect to see rain again. Yet the growth rings on the old redwoods are certain proof that every drought ends.

The potential problems, already actual in some places, include areas closed to logging, production curtailments due to a lack of logs, shutbacks in hydroelectric power, forest fires in unusually dry forests, and cancelled building permits as communities doubt their ability to provide water for additional residents. The list of problems could also include a railcar shortage as rolling stock caught in the record snows of the East is unavailable to transport Western wood products to their usual destinations. The problems go on and on.

But their root cause in this instance is the weather, and that is going to change, of that we can be certain. A drought is trouble, but it's not the end of the world.

Without downplaying the seriousness of the situation, a word or two against over-reacting is in order. Now is not the time to shut down, curtail mindlessly or be unduly pessimistic. Now is the time to cope, waste not what we have, and to poise ourselves so that when our lands are again blessed with water that we can get back quickly to the business of supplying the shelter needs of America.

Redwood clears get big promotional push

OR THE first tirne in two years, the California Redwood Association is promoting clear redwood lumber grades to the consumer market. Full color ads appearing in national consumer magazines, including House Beautiful and House & Garden, are emphasizing clear and clear all heart grades of redwood lumber for distinctive paneling, siding, trim and fascia for custom hontes.

Nationwide CRA newspaper and magazine publicity promoting a new CRA brochure, Ponel A Room llith Redwood Lumber, is geared to home remodeling, a S32 billion market in 1977 . Articles appearing in Popular Mechanics, House Beautiful and other major consurner magazines and newspapers show do-it-yourselfers how to design and install redwood lunrber wall paneling to add insulation, beauty and value to their homes.

Story at a Glance

A major promotion is pushing clear redwood lumber grades to the consumer market.

new CRA sales literature stresses redwood's features as paneling, siding and lumber.

Through other publications, CRA advertising and publicity are also reaching architects, builders, remodeling contractors, designers and engineers. Redwood lumber dealers should stock clear architectural grades to meet 1977's rising demand and sales potential.

Redwood's strongest market, custom housing, amounted to 30% of 1975's'total housing starts and is growing with general homebuilding this year.

Redwood lumber paneling and siding are in demand for all rooms of a house, to complement plants, antiques and art objects currently popular ir.r home furnishings. Custom redwood applications also reflect a new trend towards artistic selfexpression in house design with natural, energy-saving materials.

CRA consumer publicity points out that kiln-dried clear and clear all heart redwood lumber grades, more shrink- and warp-proof than other wood species, provide the finest wall paneling and siding available. Redwood heartwood, with unique decayand insect-resistance, requires no finishes for years of outstanding low-maintenance perfonnance indoors and out.

The CRA does urge that redwood lumber dealers reconrmend and sell flat polyurethane coatings for best performance in humid kitchens and bathrooms. Clear water repellent and noncorrosive hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel or aluminunr nails are recomntended for exterior redwood lumber uses.

For single- and multi-unit builder developments, CRA publicity is emphasizing redwood paneling and siding as excellent sales assets with practical and esthetic appeal. New housing with unfinished rooms, attics, basements and expandable floorplans will continue to boost demand for redwood in room additions and remodelins.

Low flamespread ratings of redwood lumber makes it practical and economical for institutional as well as home building. Without requiring expensive flame retardant treatment, redwood lumber paneling can appear naturally in public rooms, hospitals, and housing for the elderly, among other special use structures.

Architectural redwood grades are also being used in new low-rise contmercial building and remodeled offices, apartments, and entertainment centers, as well as resort-recreation facilities and vacation homes.

With close to half of today's households consisting of only one or two people, enriching small living spaces means new sales potential for redwood short clears. New CRA doit-yourself brochures for rugged redwood plant holders and other projects are being publicized in national newspaper and magazine articles to help stimulate consumer demand for short clears.

There's a redwood pattern and grade for every application-all especially suited for today's lifestyles. Dealers should take advantage of the wide variety of redwood grades and sizes and the wide range of redwood promotion for bigger sales in '77

Through their redwood suppliers, dealers should order CRA idea booklets and construction tipsheets, including Ponel A Room With Redwood Lumber and the newest on short clears, Redwood Projects for Plants, for customer give-aways. For a free sample kit of sales aids and a promotion aids price list, write to the California Redwood Association, Dept. CSC, 617 Montgomery St., San Francisco, Ca.94111.

Palco Garden Redwood to best advantage

Following afewsimple recommendationswill help the usergetthe best performance from garden redwood and at the most economical cost.

Crades to buy and where to use Palco garden redwood is made in two graoes :

1. Construction Heart consists of all heartwood (the cinnamon color wood) and may contain knots up to approximately one-half the width of the piece and some manufacturing imperfections if they do not cause waste.

2. Construction Common is similar to Construction Heart except that sapwood (the cream colored wood) is included.

Construction Heart is ideal for all types of garden structures. And, because Construction Heart is resistant to decay and insect attack, it should be used for those pieces which are in contact with the soil.

Construction Common is also ideal for all types of garden structures and can be used to particular advantage by utilizing the interesting color contrast of heartwood and sapwood. Construction Common should not be used for those pieces which are in contact with the soil.

Nails and fastenings

Use only top quality hordipped galvanized, stainless steel, or aluminum alloy nails and fastenings. Nails and fastenings of plain iron, cement coated, or galvanized by other than hot-dip process will corrode and stain the wood with hard-to-remove streaks. The slight additional cost of non-corrosive fastening is justified by superior performance.

Fin ishes

Palco Carden Redwood can be used to provide maintenance-free performance by leaving it unfinished. Or, if a finish is desired, the durability, weatherability, and excellent finishability of redwood provides for minimum marnlenance.

Unfinished: With no finish, redwood exposed to the weather will eventually reach a driftwood gray color. The surfaces may darken early in the aging process as dark-colored water-soluble chemicals in the wood come to the surface. These will wash away, leaving the driftwood gray surface to last the lifetime of the structure.

Bleaching: The weathering to a driftwod gray may be accelerated by applying a commercial bleach. One application is usually suff icient.

Water-repellentapplication: A water repellent application will eliminate the dark stages that unf inished redwood exteriors sometimes go through and will let the surface gradually weather to a buckskin tan. This color can be maintained by applying additional coats of water repellent when needed. with no additional treatment, the redwood will eventually weather to a beautiful tannish-gray color. Water repellents are inexpensive and easy to apply.

Stains: Redwood can be stained to achieve any color desired. Latex stains are particularly suited for garden redwood, are very durable and can be used on surfaces that are damo. Oil-base stains should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's directions, which usually will specify that the surface be dry.

Caution : Do not use varnish or clear film forming finishes. Do not use the so-called "shake and shingle" stains or paints.

A simple idea...that sells redwood

f, | ODULAR redwood planters . . IUI a simple idea, simply designed, easily built, but an idea that enhances the environment indoors and outdoors. The versatile multi-tiered planters permit a variety of arrangements, suitable for patio or deck, or for any room in the house.

The planters are light in werght, easy to move outside during spring and summer months to take advantase of the natural sunlight and then to 6e returned inside when the weather turns cold. The design was planned for potted plants, providing ease in transportation and permitting a quick rotation of plants for variety and a change of decor.

The base planter is built with four legs since it partially supports the weight of all others. Each succeeding planter has three legs, with one corner resting on the planter below, permitting each to be turned at different angles to accommodate spaces and plant arrangements. Planters may be built in a series of 3,4,5 or 6, based on a modular progression stemming from the fourJegged bottom unit.

Redwood 2x2s were used in the construction of the planters shown in the accompanying photos. About 54' of lumber was required for the three-tiered model. The planters may vary in size, according to individual plans.

Those shown are 2'x2'x7Yz" and 10Y2" . A square bottom, 7%", fits inside each planter to hold the potted plants. A molding strip around the inside edge forms a ledge to hold the bottom piece. The 2x2s forming the sides of the boxes are edge glued together with a Resorcinol waterproof glue permitting the planters to be used outside as well as inside. The top edge is finished with 1x3 redwood.

A semitransparent stain was applied to the planters to accent the grain and texture of the redwood and to hold its fresh milled color. The choice of redwood with its great beauty and the

El UILDERS and architects who lJ have used redwood for commercial, residential and institutional construction, are knowledgeable about the grades offered in this beautiful wood species.

More and more these same specifiers and users are turning to clear redwood for both interior and exteior application.

It offers all the beauty of the more expensive clear all heart and even more, perhaps, because of the contrasting clear heartwood and creamy sapwood that makes up this grade. The aesthetically appealing appearance of clear redwood is a design tool in itself, wherever used.

This is well demonstrated in the accompanying photos. The clubhouse in the Maple Hills Condominium complex, Bountiful, Ut., features clear redwood in the walls and ceiling. The Packard residence in Colorado has clear redwood on both exterior and interior.

Over and above the beauty and qualities of redwood is the lower cost of clear redwood as compared to clear all heart. It averages about $50 per

Several patterns add to the design capabilities with the added advantage that clear redwood is beautiful whether used diagonally, vertically or horizontally. The additional qualities of fire resistance and insulation values are added to the choice of smooth or rough sawn textures.

Best of all, clear redwood grades are immediately available through Simpson Timber Co. dealers and distributors, according to company spokespersons.

Redwood management

f)nclnlc Lumber's wise resource f management is one of the Principal reasons the companY has become such a flexible manufacturer and the supplier of such a wide range of redwood products.

Since 1869 they have been producing redwood products from old growth redwood stands. And they intend to do so for many more years.

Timberlands now contain young growth redwood and fir in considerable volume, and much is reaching merchantable size, principally in the 60-80 year old class. Logs from these stands, logs from thinning of young growth and smaller logs from old

growth stands are now being converted into lumber in their small log sawmill at Fortuna. Ca.

ln 1972 Pacific opened its Fortuna sawmill and introduced a whole new facet of redwood marketing for the company, one of the largest single private resource owners in the redwood industry. Palco has long been known for its superior quality redwood finish and siding items and, more recently, for its top quality sawtextured redwood and fir plywood sidings.

The Fortuna operation has brought a wider range of the garden grades into the marketplace bearing the Palco brand name.

Outside observers had wondered about the building of a new sawmill in an industry with limited timber growing acres available, an industry that faces additional environmentalist pressures from extremist preservationist groups who would lock up all of the redwood forests for single purpose wilderness and eliminate all forest management and balanced harvesting practices.

The company owns vast areas of timberland which. under its sustained yield forest management, will continue to supply the fine grained old growth for decades while at the same time producing release growth and healthy, vigorous young growth which is ready for harvesting now and will continue to be in the decades ahead.

The Fortuna operation is built to handle logs that are no larger than 43" in diameter. Certainly that represents a log size substantially greater than the log size of second growth forests in most other species and indicates the obvious fact that redwood is an extremely fast growing species. Its redwood forests grow tremendous volumes of wood fiber under the proper growing conditions maintained by company foresters.

Story at a Glance

A producer of redwood Products since 1869, Palco continues to stress resource management as a prime way of assuring a continuing flow of products to market.

In order to most effectively utilize its Scotia sawmill operations where the big old growth logs are coming in, Palco found the need to build a sawmill specifically geared to the smaller release growth and young growth timber which is becoming vital to its total oroduct mix. -

The young growth and release growth timber produce excellent grades for garden and outdoor living applications. Their construction heart and construction common are highly suited to the deck and fence market so important throughout the United States.

The Fortuna mill makes basically 2x4 through 2xl2 and 4x4 and 4x6 construction heart & better and construction common & better. They also make rough timbers on special order.

Stock is unitized for truck. box car or flat car shipment. They add the advantage of shipping these common grades for outdoor living out of Fortuna and toploading the fine quality clear grades from Scotia so important for siding and finish applications.

Thus, with its resource management, plus flexible redwood Production, the firm is geared to serving all markets.

I I THOEVER said, "lr isn't nice to Y Y fool Mother Nature?"

At Simpson Timber Company's Korbel, Ca., forestry operations, it is hoped some well-planned intrusions into the private lives of timber-yielding redwood and Douglas-fir will be a profitable experience.

Company reforestation specialists are applying the science of genetics in the form of selective breeding to insure increasingly productive timberland.

Selective tree-breeding is similar to hybridizing corn to grow more kernels per ear or raising a horse to win the Kentucky Derby. In any stand of equal age trees, a small percentage will stand taller and healthier than their neighbors simply because of natural variation. However, the application of that knowledge to improve the timber resource is a longterm proposition which is brand new to the field of commercial forest management.

Story at a Glance

The science of genetics as applied to redwood by 1990 foresters hope to produce seed capable of growing trees 50% faster than contemporary young growth trees.

Reforestation Supervisor Jim Rydelius, a graduate of Humboldt State and Yale Universities and former researcher under redwood expert Emanuel Fritz, has been responsible for Simpson's redwood region resource renewal for l0 years. Now he and his assistants are developing outstanding coastal redwood and Douglas-fir which will subsequently be parents to improved generations.

The breeding program begins with careful selection of the handful of young trees which exhibit desirable traits such as superior volume and height growth. Less than 0.10% qualify as true "plus" trees in an area of uniform soil type and stand age. The selected trees must pass a test requiring, among other considerations, that they stand at least 2O% larger than their contemporaries.

Then foresters must separate their genetic composition to allow for artificial manipulation of the pollination process. This is done by shooting off the tips of the uppermost branches with telescopic sight-equipped rifles or shotguns.

Redwood branch tips are planted in individual "tube" containers of moist,

sandy soil. With heat to warm the soil and some greenhouse coddling, the redwoods quickly form roots. Eventually, they are transplanted to a seed orchard to continue developing into breeding stock. Because Douglas-fir cuttings are difficult to root, their branch tips (called scions) are grafted onto compatible root stock.

Once the rooted redwood and grafted fir are established in seed orchards, they will begin to produce bulk seed which is expected to grow trees 15Vo - 20% faster than the average dominant trees in today's young growth forests. Rydelius predicts that within five years, Simpson's redwood seed orchards will yield enough seed to stock the Korbel Forest Nursery annually.

The research foresters are also establishing a breeding orchard to control the cross pollination process among the selected trees to develop seedlings of known pedigree. These will be planted in progeny test plots where each young tree's performance will be compared with others. This will enable the scientists to identify which trees transmit the most favorable growth traits on to future generations.

The progency tests will be started in 1980. "At that point," Rydelius says, "we will be well down the road toward making our next genetic gain. By 1990 we should have the confidence to select trees for seed capable of growing 50% fasler than contemporary young growth trees."

The results of these breeding efforts will multiply as new genes are continually introduced through the selection of more plus trees to further upgrade the improved forest stock. He believes this program will eventually yield coastal redwood and Douglas-fir planting stock growing twice as fast as the seedlings set out today.

Undeniably, Simpson's tree-breeding "fools" with Mother Nature's routine. But, like any mother, she should be proud to see her progeny growing faster in future years as the thoroughbred product of tree breeding specialists.

F0BESTBY Assistant Steve Jolley takes aim at the top branch of a superior young growth redwood. Branch tips will be root' ed and grow into genetically identical trees.

Merchandising redwood

pl EDWOOD wholesaler-dealer proI I motion programs boosted sales throughout the West last year. Here's a summary of merchandising ideas, sales seminars and advertising plans, some initiated by California Redwood Association mills, that have great potential for 1977.

COLORADO, UTAH EXPAND ADS

Hugh M. Woods Co., Denver, Co., saw 1976 redwood sales increase 20% with 2-3 fuil page newspaper ads and an S-page flyer every month through last summer that included redwood. Lumber merchandised in easy-toreach bins marked by length and price also boosted sales. Woods expects continued success in'77, with its seventh Denver area store due to open this summer.

Imperial Wholesale, Salt Lake City, ran radio ads worth $2,000 last summer with CRA mill cooperative ad funds. Consumer responses directed to local dealers boosted interest for more ads in 1917, and Imperial plans

redwood seminars this summer for 250 dealers from Utal.r and Idaho.

SEATTLE, PORTLAND PROMOTIONS

Seattle Lumber Supply & Warehouse, whose redwood sales have grown 15-20% a year for the past l0 years, plans new weekiy newspaper ads, also with CRA mill cooperative funds. The dealer is participating in Seattle's 1977 Horle Show, expected to draw 120,000 visitors this month, and, with l2 other redwood dealers, in a local building show later this Spring.

Carl Diebold Lumber, Portland redwood wholesaler with 30% of business in retail sales, plans to advertise to consumers in city and suburban newspapers, and distribute to dealers CRA product literature worth $900 for point-of-sales aids.

CALIFORNIANS' CAMPAIGNS

Yaeger & Kirk Lumber Co., Santa Rosa, will continue its very successful newspaper ads and monthly 16-page

insert this year. Pricing and advertising complete redwood deck lunrber packages boosted deck sales by 25'/n last year. Although affected by drought conditions now, Yaeger & Kirk has enjoyed major growth since ntoving into a fornrer car dealership yard in June, 1974, that increased store space from 4,000 to 14,000 sq. ft.

South Bay Redwood, Orange, Ca., will distribute new catalogs of CRA literature worth $1,250 to 250 dealers this year. With a 30% redwood sales jump last year, mainly fronr growing residential and low-rise comtlrercial demand, the wholesaler has added four sales representatives, increased dealer mailings by 50%, and plans to make presentations in more local dealer meetings in 1977.

South Bay is also considering a new (Please turn to poge 43)

Story at a Glance

Throughout the West, redwood sales are up f or both dealers and wholesalers, a number of progressive industry firms have already set extensive redwood promotion plans for the balance of '77.

T HE following is a copy of a

I letter that yours truly recently sen-t to the editor of The Arizona Republic, our largest newspaper in the state. It said:

Do Arizona's large utilities really want to save energy? Are they interested in long-range energy conservation planning?

On the surface the answer is "yes".

They supply fuel-saving tips and recommend lower thermostat settings in winter and higher in seasons requiring air conditioning.

They have even endorsed, and are

promoting, what they call The Remarkable Energy Saving House which they say will save "up to lO%".

Sounds good.

Sounds good but it could sound better !

Sometime before The Remarkable Energy Value Home was introduced, the Arizona Lumber and Builders Supply Association presented plans to representatives of the large utilities of the Maximum Energy Saver House with features that save 4O% on heating and cooling costs.

This great savings is not merely a claim but a fact since many of these homes have been built in other states and heating and cooling costs are some

Other industry briefs include: retirement of Frank Dvoracek as assistant supervisor for the Montanadivision of United Building Centers: Paul Lund, UBC manager at Great Falls, is now handling those duties while JerrY Robson assumes the management of the Great Falls yard.

Johnson Building Materials, Anaconda, was a recent fire victim, losing an estimated 5O% of inventorY and buildings. The fire was apparently the result of "target practice" on the buildings by a youthful marksman using, of all things, tracer ammunition. Mel is busy rebuilding and restocking.

State Lumber Co., Great Falls, a long-time MBMDA member, has liqui dated stock and equipment and closed its doors. Paul Olson, owner, decided to move at a more relaxed Pace.

Montana vacationers in sunny southlands include Hubert and Hilma White, Neifert-White Co., Townsend, in Caribbean waters, and Roger and Lila Walsh in the desert wastelands (i.e., golf) of California.

Back on a limited work schedule is Mark Rolfson, Rolfson Co., Polson, after a critical heart problem.

407o lower than conventional houses of the same size.

In Arkansas, Florida, New Mexico and Colorado utility companies are promoting homes built on the same concept as the Maximum Energy Saver House.

Since construction costs of this house is essentially the same as a conventional house of equal size, it is difficult to understand why Arizona's large utilities are promoting a house which they claim will save "up to l0%" over one which has been proved to save 40% in heating and cooling costs.

Do Arizona's large uti.lities really want to save energy?

I OOK ahead to 1977 Spring Disl- trict Meetings. The first meetilg in Boise, March 24, will kick off the Spring District Meeting schedule at 22 locations. A program is being planned to include subjects that are timely and impofiant to each and every member. Plan to attend your District Meeting.

OSHA inspections have new amendments: The fiscal year 1977 Appropriations Act for the Department of Labor and Health, Education & Welfare (Public Law 94-439), contains provisions for substantive exemption from the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970 (OSHA).

During the present fiscal year (end-

ing Sept. 30, l9'l'7) OSHA will no Ionger assess financial penalties for "first-instance, non-serious" job safety and health violations on firms or farms with more than l0 employees unless l0 or more citations are noted resulting from an inspection.

Firms with 10 or fewer employees this year (or for the previous year) will not be inspected by OSHA during this fiscal year. Keep in mind these exemptions are only good until 9130177.

A serious violation is one that if not corrected shows "substantial probability that death or serious physical harm is likely to occur and that the employer knew or should have known of its existence." A non-serious violation would be any other infraction.

One thing that will have a definite effect on the market place is the present water shortage in Northern California.

spections without warrants remain legal in all states except ldaho. The ldaho court ruling to block OSHA surprise inspections without a warrant is expected to be acted upon eventually by the U. S. Supreme Court.

Some 120 were in attendance at the 8th Young Westerners Conference in Seattle, Jan. 14-16. The agenda consisted of a wide spectrum of programs tailored to the needs of young industry employees.

Yours truly began the Conference with a talk titled, "WBMA-Its Future, and What Your Association Can Mean to You."

An impressive program by Dick Anderson, American Plywood Assn., and Don Comstock. Western Wood Products Assn., stressed the various uses of lumber and plywood as well as technical knowledge of these two products.

Larry Knudsen, president of Lumbermen's of Washington, and I held a panel on motivation, career planning and personal development, stressing the importance of hard work, honesty and constant education in order to be successful.

A four-hour session on accounting was conducted by the CPA firm Vander Wegen & Kincaid covering financial statements, case histories of business failures and successes and round table problem solving.

Conclusion of the conference featured a seminar on advertising from the dealer's point of view bY Keith Kincaid, advertising manager of Lumbermen's of Washington.

The next meeting will be in May, a dinner meeting in the L.A. Orange County area. Following that, the Second Annual Weekend Seminar will be held. The location this year is the Erawan Gardens Hotel, Palm Desert, June 10 - 12.

Lots of new faces were present at the Hyatt House meeting. This indicates an expanding interest in a very viable group. If you have persons under 35 in your operation, look into tl'e 2nd Growth. It's a great way to assist their growth with the industry.

A CRY FOR HELP! AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL WESTERN LUMBER & BUILDING MATERIAL DEALERS.

Lumber

States are a different breed of businessmen than their compatriots in other parts of the U.S.

Western dealers still have the personal feeling of frontierism. They operate in this area because they want to get away from the regimented life styles ol the heavily congested Eastern region. They do not like to be a part of a large group. They would rather enjoy their own independent life style.

Maybe you are different than the group as a whole but evidence shows that we are different. As an example, the Western region dealers are always short in attendance at the National annual meeting and the Annual Conference with Congress. Granted, it is a long way to travel but, then so is a seminar in Europe or Spain.

Most of you realize the increasing control being exercised by government on the businessman. You must because you complain about it constantly. Our problem is that our actions only go as far as complaints to each other. If we expended that same amount of time and energy in corresponding with our Congressmen it would have more impact on the industries'needs.

Our next Naticnal Conference with Congress will be Aprll 27-28, 1977. \4e need to visit our Congressmen in their offices in Washington. We need to let them know we are willing to travel to Washington in defense of our industry.

They become more concerned for our needs knowing that we have spent time and money to meet with them. It is an important move for our industry to have approximately 600 dealers from across the nation meet in the Nation's Capitol on one given day. They know we are there !

Our associations continue to fight the masses of legislation that are cranked out of the legislative machine on a daily basis but it takes the additional impact of concerned businessmen to cause defeat of legislation that will hurt our industry. Only you, through your individual concern for your industry can create that impact.

Legislation will be closely monitored during the coming year. At times you will be requested to write or call your Congressman regarding legislation that will add another crippling wound to our battered industry. When that call for HELP comes react.

SUN AND SHAD0W - Abundant use of wood, combined with numerous skylights, creates relaxed, informal atmosphere in interior of $20 million air terminal, Hilo. Hawaii. More than 4000 beams, totaling approximately l million board feet, were supplied by Koppers Co. All structural wood was safeguarded against decay and termite attack by pressure treatment with a Koppers preservative.

Distributors' Sales Up

A year-end survey of 1976 by the National Building Material Distributors Association shows a healthy increase in business for its independent wholesale distributor members. Over 90% of the members reported a sales increase over the previous year, three-fourths had improved profits.

Eighty percent expect a sales increase over the first half of 1976 and two-thirds anticipate higher profits.

Members expect more activity in single family construction than in multifamily/apartment building. Home

improvement is expected to remain strong. Little change is anticipated in material availability and members were almost unanimous in the opinion that both labor costs and operating costs will rise 7% in the first half of 1977.

Dealers Big in Plywood

The increasing importance of retail dealers in supplying basic plywood markets is explored in a new market research report from the American Plywood Association.

"Plywood Distribution Trends 1962-1975," is a detailed analysis of plywood distribution channels that concludes:

. The retail dealer furnished 88% of the residential construction market's plywood in 191 5, up significantly from72%in 1962.

. Industrial users bought 39% of their plywood from retaif dealers in l97l as well as 1975, but only 22% rn 1962.

. The retail dealer's share of the nonresidential construction market increased from 69% in 1962 to 81% in 1975.

. 94% of d-i-y and contractor remodeling is supplied by retailers.

Apparently, the share of plywood shipmentshandled by the various types of wholesalers has stabilized since 1971. The mill-owned share dropped slightly, the stocking independents increased slightly and the office wholesalers and agents remained constant. Direct sales from the mill declined slightly when exports are not included.

The report, R 37, is available at no charge to APA members, $7.50 per copy to nonmembers.

San Diego cargo lumber

The quantity of construction lumber shipped to San Diego, Ca., by ocean carrier set a new record in 1976, according to figures just released by the San Diego Lumber and Wood Products Association.

A total of 205.8 million board feet of lumber was unloaded from barges and freighters at the 24th Street Terminal in National City during the past year, breaking the previous record of 203.8 million reached in 1973. Henrv

Garnjobst, information director, announced.

By comparison with 1915,44.5 million board feet more lumber entered the port of San Diego during 1976, representing a 27Yz% increase, Garnjobst added. If used entirely for housing, the 1976 volume represents enough lumber to build over 20,000 average residential units, he said.

Forest products cargo shipments tabulated orisinated from British

Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Northern California ports and consisted almost entirely of Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock, spruce and redwood lumber.

Statistics do not include hardwoods, veneers, plywood or shingles and shakes. No figures are available on rail or truck shipments of lumber into San Diego county, the association points out.

The association has maintained records on cargo lumber shipments since 1962 when a total of 86 million board feet was discharged. All construction lumber cargos have moved through the 24th Street Terminal since completion of that facility.

Yearly board footage volume is as follows:

More Plywood for Mobiles

The groundwork for more intensified promotion to the mobile home industry continues to be laid by the American Plywood Association.

Tests are now underway at the APA Tacoma. Wa.. Research Center to take advantase of the mobile home indus-

try's growing requirements for plywood-up 62% since 1972. Plywood use has increased largely because of more stringent construction standards from regulatory agencies and growing demand by consumers for mobile homes that look more like conventional housing.

To capitalize on this trend, and to firmly establish continued strong growth for plywood, APA is conducting three major research programs to increase the use of plywood for roofs, walls and ridge beams in mobile home construction.

SUPPORT MERCY KILLING OF OLD TREES

"How would you like to be eaten alive by bugs? Support mercy killing of old trees! A noble giant of the forest, ruler of his domain for several hundred years deserves a more honorable death than to be eaten alive by insects!

"And you sawmills can go a step further and give these proud trees a dignified memorial service by selling the clear lumber to us. We will make mouldings and door jambs from the lumber which will be sent to the Deep South where they love to apply a natural finish rather than hide the beauty of the grain with (ugh) paint.

"Really now, does a 300 year old tree deserve to be converted to plywood and be covered by a rug and walked on? Or be covered with vinyl and be put on a wall, made to look like ash or fruity pecan?

"We will treat your trees with the reverence and respect that they deserve. "

NEW PROGRAMS TIED TO '77 TRENDS

This year and next, Southern California redwood dealers and wholesalers may be involved in new programs, such as last summer's grading seminar for 600 industry representatives at Simpson Building Supply in Cerritos.

With growing industry organization, similar shows could be held in every major U.S. metropolitan area to boost general knowledge of and demand for all wood products, according to Jim Martindale, 1976 seminar chairman. A second Southern California seminar, expected to draw at least 1,000 dealers, wholesalers, architects and contractors, has been scheduled tentatively for this June.

Other wholesaler-dealer promotion programs tying in with new CRA advertising and publicity campaigns can make 1977 very profitable.

Solar Operated Roof Vent

A new solar-operated moisture/ vapor roof vent that helps prevent blistering, cracking and premature failure of roofing systems caused by sealed-in moistureladen air has been introduced by Johns-Manville.

The patented FP-10 one-way roof vent can be installed in new or existing built-up roofing systems and is designed to release moisture and prohibit its re-entry in all types of roof decks, roof insulation and roofing membranes. The vent is particularly useful in buildings where moisture, emanating from humidity within the structure, may enter the roofing sys-

OPEN

tem because of a faulty vapor barrier or the lack of one.

The venting unit is actuated when heat of the sun on the roof causes trapped moistureladen air to expand. This action opens the vent's one-way valve, releasing the moisture into the atmosphere. When the roof cools, the valve closes, sealing the roof against the re-entry of damp air. The valve also prevents the admission of snow and wind-blown rain and will block water entrance even if submerged.

The roof vent consists of a one piece roof deck flange and body and a weatherproof cap made of durable, damage-resistant black polyethylene; and a silicone rubber one-way valve that has an operating temperature range of -65oF. to 450oF. The deck tlange measures 10" in diameter, while the body has a base diameter of 4Yz" and a heieht of 6"

Wood Saves the Budget

Four of the seven fioors ot tne $6.7 million Terman Engineering Center at Stanford University in California are framed of wood and have a lanrinated wood decking. The early design called for a reinforced concrete or steel structure.

Because of increased steel costs the structural concept was changed to wood framing.

Constructed in an L-shape, the building has a 240' x 115' ft main wing with a concrete block center section of 103.5' x 60' bracketed by wood frame office tiers and a 186'x 46' wing. The latter wing is framed entirely with laminated beams.

The laminated wood decking is 3" decorative STX Lock Deck, a product of Potlatch Corp. The structure required approximately 90,000 sq. ft. of the laminated decking. Topped with l/2" plywood and 1-1 12" of foamed lightweight concrete for flooring, the decking is ieft exposed on the ceiling sid e.

Use of plywood provides extra diaphragm strength in the seismic design while the concrete imparts additional sound deadening properties. The building is scheduled for an April 1977 completion.

Energy Saving Skylight

Panelux Skylight, a translucent sandwich-construction unit for skvlighting and sidewall glazing, is dLsigned to save energy in two important ways: (1) it reduces the need for artificial illumination; and (2) the laminated construction. which traps air between the surface skins. effeitively insulates against heat loss or solar heat gain. It has excellent light transmitting qualities and better diffusion than glass or acrylic.

It is fabricated of fiberglass-rein- forced acrylic polyester skin laminated to a non-conductive, nonmetallic fiberboard core. Wiih this construction, the Skylight will never form frost or condensation on the inside of the panel even in the most severe conditions.

The design provides optimum load bearing strength, impact resistance, and is lightweight for ease of installation. The top surface incorporates a weathercoat to assure maximum longevity.

Integral fiberglass perimeter curb flashing allows for a completely flat top surface. With no perimeter lip or joints the Skylight is watertight without sealant.

Single Panelux Skylight units are available in maximum dimensions of 5' 6" x 25' long. For large area multiple-pane installations, aluminum jointing accessories are available.

The face skins may be clear, white, or one of the standard Cemcel tints. The grid core shows a dark line pattern, with a variety of patterns also available.

Five species of meranti

MERANTI (all colours)

The name Meranti is a group name covering all the relatively light weight and softer timbers produced by the genus Shorea: this main group is further sub-divided into the following sub-groups: -Meranti Bakau, Dark Red Meranti, Light Red Meranti, llhite Meranti, and Yellow Meranti, and brief descriptions of the timbers included in these sub-groups are given below. Other timbers produced by the gents Shorea are all Heavy Hardwoods.

MERANTI BAKAU

Meranti Bakau, produced by S. rugosa vat. uliginosa, is in all respects similar to Dark Red Meranti from which it has been separated merely on the ground that it is comparatively more susceptible to seasoning degrade. (For general description and uses see Dark Red Meranti)

MERANTI, DARK RED

Dark Red Meranti is the product of mainly S. curtisii and S. pouciflorabut timbers of similar structure, weight and colour of other soecies of Shorea may be included undei this name. The wood is synonymous with Dark Red Seraya of Borneo and very similar to Dark Red Philippine Mahogany. It is a moderately hard and moderately heavy wood suitable for general construction, interior fittings and furniture. It is not durable under tropical conditions and is difficult to treat with preservatives.

Story at a Glance

Five different species of meranti are described in this exderpt from the Malayan Grading Rules book for sawn hardwood timber. . some of the meranti species are very similar to Philippine red mahogany.

It is easy to work and seasons quickly without any trouble. Sapwood is susceptible to drywood termites.

General desuiption of the wood:Saowood is well defined. The heartwood is dark red-brown in colour, weathering to a darker shade. Surface is not lustrous. The grain is interlocked giving rise to strip figure. The texture is coarse and even. Longitudinal surfaces of Dark Red Meranti, particularly S. paucifiora. are often distinctively marked with narrow, white coloured streaks. These streaks are in fact the exposed longitudinal sections of the resin canals-a normal feature of the wood-and are not considered a defect because they do not affect the strength or utility of the wood. The wood is not resinous.

MERANTI, LIGHT RED

Light Red Meranti is the product of several species of Shorea the more common of which are S. acuminata, S. leprosula, S. macroPtera and S. parvifolia. Except for its lighter colour and lower density it is not unlike Dark Red Meranti and is very similar to Philippine Red MahoganY or Red Lauan and Borneo Red Seraya. It is essentially a cabinet and decorative purpose wood but due to its abundance in Malaya it is being indiscriminately (at present) used for all light constructional purposes. The wood is moderately hard and moderately heavy. It is not durable for external uses in Malaya and does not absorb preservatives. It is easy to work and seasons quickly and without degrade. "Shot holes", which are the galleries of dead Ambrosia beetles that attack the living tree, ate a fairly common defect, and brittle-heart is common in logs of Light Red Meranti. Sapwood is suscePtible to drYwood termite attack.

Generul desciption of the wood:Sapwood is well defined. The heartwood is pale pink, light red-brown or red-brown. The surface is fairlY lustrous. The grain is interlocked and gives rise to stripe figure and texture is

coarse and even. Resin canals with white contents occur charact'eristically in concentric lines on end surface but the wood is not resinous.

MERANTI, WHITE

White Meranti is similar to North Borneo Melapi, it is the timber of a group of some Shorea species but most of the timber is the product of S. bracteolata and S. hypochra. It is a moderately hard and moderately heavy general utility wood. It is moderately durable and is amenable to preservative treatment. It is very difficult to cut and blunts cutting tools excessively but it may be peeled readily on a lathe. It seasons without difficulty.

General description of the wood:Sapwood is moderately well defined. The heartwood is almost white when freshly cut weathering to a yellowbrown: surface is lustrous. The grain is wavy or interlocked producing faint stripe figure and texture is moderately coarse and even. Resin canals with white contents occur characteristically in concentric lines on end surface but the wood is not resinous.

MERANTI. YELLOW

Yellow Meranti is the product of several species of Shorea belonging to the Richetia group the most abundant of which are S. faguetiana and S. resina-nigra. It is a moderately hard and moderately heavy general utility wood similar to Yellow Seraya of Borneo and Philippine Yellow Lauan. It is not a durable wood but is amenable to preservative treatment. It is easy to work and seasons quicklY without degrade.

General description of the wood:Sapwood is well defined. The heart' wood is light yellow'brown when fresh weathering to a slightly darker shade of yellow-brown. Surface is not lustrous. The grain is interlocked giving rise to faint stripe figure. The texture is moderately coarse and even. Resin canals with white contents occur characteristically in concentric lines on end surface but the wood is not resinous.

Big retirement party

Miles Davidson, retiring U U Western region v.p. for National Building Centers, went over to the Hyatt House in Los Angeles recently for dinner, he was expecting "a handful" of old friends at an intimate dinner to perhaps take note ofhis then impending retirement.

IA|HEN

What really happened was something very different.

The ever efficient NBC crew hired a huge hall, two fast bartenders and then put on a cocktail party and dinner and gave Miles Davidson a King Kong sized

going away party. Not the least of which was the more than 300 friends and acquaintances who came to honor him, some of whom travelled from Oregon and Washington just for the party. His brother Roy made it in from St. Louis for the big occasion.

Asa Jennings, NBC headman, was one of a nurrrber of speakers who lauded Miles, taking note (among the good humored jabs) of his competance, leadership abilities and many friends.

And yes, he was really surprised by the surprise party.

ANOTHER P.O. VICTIM

Gentlemen: I was interested in your January editorial referred to as "We're Fed Up".

Along that line you will be interested to know that I purchased a camera which immediately began to malfunction so I mailed it back to the factory. It was insured for several hundred dollars and was subsequently lost in the mails. I thereupon requested the postal department to send out a tracer and was informed several weeks later they were not only unable to send out a tracer but would not paY for any claim unless a sales receipt was produced.

How dumb! How many insured packages are backed up with sales receipts? Particularly if the item has been given previously as a gift or the owner has thrown away the sales receipt, etc. How many people insuring packages retain their sales slips? It's ridiculous. Further, how easy to dummy up a receipt or make uP Your very own Mastercharge receiPt or equal.

Of further interest was my conversation with the Postmaster wherein he was unable to show me any written information as to the limits of the insurance. On the other hand the government stifles business with all the vast quantities of information it must pass on to its customers regarding all facets of each and every sale.

Best regards,

Kingston McKee Forest Lumber Co. 2360 Huntington Dr. San Marino. Ca. 9l 108

What also concerns me is that, are we making the same adjustments in our business lives? The water we waste in our offices and factories is no less valuable and no less wasted merely because it is industrial.

Conserving water from automatic landscaping sprinklers, faulty plumbing, and unattended running water in industrial business parks and offices is no less our responsibility as business citizens as conserving the same resource at home.

We can not and must not separate these two parts of our lives.

My answer to mY boY was that we will never run out of anything we don't waste.

South Bay Redwood Co.

ON WASTING WATER

The front page of this morning's L. A. Times has a lead banner "STATE ORDERS 60% CUT IN FARM WATER", which painfully reminds me of an incident last evening at home. I was watching a news program when my six year old boy came up and asked, "Daddy, will we have enough water to live?".

Certainly we all hope and pray the drought will break soon. We are being made aware of the adjustments we will have to make in our personal lives in order to conserve our most precious water resources.
