There's nothing new about "specials" in the Iumber business. But at Inland, we ve starled a special program to give our customers a better price on most standard lumber requirements. We call it "Unitization." By pre-packaging lumber into random length units, we reduce handling costs. The savings are nassed alonp to orrr customers. And it also means we can fill customer orders even faster. Unitizatron is one good reason for doing business with Inland... but there are a lot more.

We are direct mill shippers. Our inventory of competitively prrced West Coast forest products is the largest in Southern California. We have complete milling facilities. Besides lumber, we handle a full Iine of other building su ppr I es.

Wqllet lmprovement Month

pACK at the beginning of the year, when most U everyone was trying to adjust to the New Year and snow covered much of our eleven western states, the first mailings and promotions had begun to s t a r t May National Home Improvement M o n t h. It was none too soon to start.

The promotion for this annual efrort to sell the public on fixing up their homes grows larger every year, the program more extensive and effective. It reflects the home modernization market itself which last year did $I3.5 billion and expects to push towards $15 billion this year. Do-it-yourselfers alone are expected to spend an estimated $4 billion this year for home fix-up.

Study the Home Improvement Time materials that have been sent. The varieties of action open to you are extensive. You can limit your efforts to hanging a few banners in the .ho*.oo- o. you can really jump in and set up a Headquarters City Program in your area. But whatever you do, do something. The market is there, don,t .i,vait until it is too late to take part in this year's ob-

servation. If you didn't get the materials we refer to for some reason, just let us know and we will make sure you do.

This year there will again be extensive promotion in the national shelter magazines. They talk directly and very effectivel.| t]o the woman shopper who controls so much of tlle discretionary income today. Such publication giants as House Beautilul, Popular Science, Better Homes and, Cardens will give in-depth coverage in their May issues. These and other national, regional, consumer and trade magazines will generate widespread enthusiasm for home improvement in virtually every segment of the population.

The natural focus of all this interest falls on the retail lumber and building materials dealer, the man who is fast becoming the source for anything connected with the home.

Less than two months away, May Home Im. provement Month can be Wallet Improvement Month for those of you at all levels of the lumber and building materials industry that have the initiative and foresight to really take part. Measure -the width of your wallet then see which part of the wide ranging program would do the job of widening it best for you and your company.

Insist on straight faced lumber by Kimberly-Clark. Then you can laugh... all the way to the bank!

Kimberly-Clark customers get top dollar for K-C lumber because it's straight faced... (hardly a chuckle in a carload) and more often than not, exceeds grade standards' Kimberly-Clark learned many years ago that satisf ied customers are the most important asset a company can have, and the best way to keep a customer satisfied is to supply him with products of highest quality at competitive prices. Then, mix with fast service, easy-to-handle packaging, and genuine interest in his problems. At Kimberly-Clark every shop employee has been trained to work at quality control. lt's the best way to protect that precious asset. . . a satistied customer. lf keeping our lumber straight faced keeps you laughing all the way to the bank, that's the way our 750 inspectors will keep it.

When you buy lumber that chuckles, the laugh's on you.

circumstances should not be allowed to dictate behavior. "You can choose and control your own behavior," she emphasized. The self-fulfilling prophesy, she warned, can be negative as well as positive.

Grand opening o{ the exhibits, held in the Hilton display hall, a level below the meeting rooms, drew an enthusiastic reception from visitors. The first day the displays were open to employees, architects and contractors.

ARCHIE iAOORE

Archie Moore, former lightheavyweight champion of the world, was the break{ast speaker next day, relating his work with his ooAny Boy Can" youth program in San Diego, Calif. He said that the kids of today can best be helped by adults working with the young and by adults working with each other.

He explained that he teaches his kids to think fast, a process he demonstrated with eight volunteers fhom the audience. Moore, as agile of mind as he is of body, rapidly grilled the volunteers with a number of quick questions. WBMA's Roger Baron, quizzed at some length by Moore, acquitted himself particularly well.

The four mini-conferences, held mid-morning on both Friday and Saturday ofiered a choice of (I) an EDP demonstration by Chet Nortz, exec. vp. of the Mountain States Lumber Dealers Assn. and president

o[ Management Advisors, lnc., (2 ) Management Guidelines by Sel Vander Wegen, CPA, and Morton Schnade o{ the Federal Trade Commission who spoke on the Truth in Lending Law (Regulation Z), (3.) Remodeling, do-it yourself and consumer marketing by Building Materiak Merchandiser publisher George Milne, and (4) Updating store layouts by the very capable Dick Fidler. A special meeting for suppliers with S.M. Van Kirk, exec. vp., of the National Building Material Distributors Assn. was also held.

In his talk on Regulation Z, the FTC's Morton Schnade explained some of the actions of the law, pointing out that it applies only to credit transactions" that the ttcreditor" must be regularly engaged in the extension of credit and that the "customer" must be a real person, not a corporation or an association, and that he must use the credit personally for household, family or farm use. A discount for prompt payment is considered a credit transaction under the law.

Store layout specialist Dick Fidler said lumber dealers have the technical knowledge that can give them the edge in competition with mass merchandisers and discounters. But, he cautioned this knowledge must be combined with better looking stores and better sales techniques.

Personal service is more important, he avered, than price, a point missed by many discounters. Eighty percent

o{ tht' dollal is spent by the women. who are more interested in good ideas and a pleasant place to shop, than they are by price alone.

He urged the dealers to borrow the good ideas in display and layout from visits to neighboring discount st0r'es.

Earle D. Brodie, a management consultant who spoke the last morning of the meet, said owner-managers are different than professional man' agers because they are Proven money makers (after the first year or so), are dealing with their own money and are free from company politics. These three factors, according to Brodie, mean the owner-manager is in a better position to make money than the not-so-involved hired manager.

He said that too many executives waste too much time in activities that produce no profit, His cotrnsel also was to avoid getting too involved with employees as it inhibits making the hard decisions necessary to the best profitability of the company.

Introduction of new president "Ike" Parker and the other new of. ficers at a big luncheon Saturday, plus an inspirational speech by Calvin Johnson wound up the WBMA's 68th annual convention in sood fashion.

Hardboard vs. Noise Pollution

Pollution is a much bandied word today. While air and water get much publicity as a widespread menace, noise pollution is more directly evi dent to the individual because so much of it is experienced within his own living quarters.

Proper construction techniques can make walls effective barriers against noise instead of carriers of noise. Soundproof walls depend essentially on the principle of construction that allows each side of the wall to vibrate without transrnitting sounds to the other side. The demand today is for thin, lightweight, guickly-assembled, "dry" construetion.

Such construction is available today in various partition systems in which prefinished hardboard paneling is the exterior component.

The real breakthrough for prefinished hardboard panelings as a noise control component was documented in recerlt tests on a dozen partitions composed of normally-used back-up materials. Ratings all above 50 STC, indicate hardboard as a satisfactory

decorative as well as sound condition. ing wall facing.

The toengineered" wood processing of hardboards gives the material high density that improves a partition's acoustical performance. High density in material of a given thickness means greater mass which is an important element in sound control partition design.

If elp'Fire!

Information and tips on how to avoid fires are all too often thought of after the fire. Why not check out your operation against the following, furnished by ille Industrial Indemnity Insurance Co. in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association.

According to the NFPA, the major causes of lumber yard fires are:

(1) Electrical.

(2) Heating Equipment.

(3) Smoking and Matches.

(4) Children and Matches.

The following rules are suggested to help you control your hazards.

( I ) Post "No Smoking" signs in mill and yard area where fires could easily start. Designate smoking areas and enforce these areas.

(2) Good housekeeping is as important in fire prevention as is good discipline. Material should not be allowed to accumulate and a good cleanup program is necessary each day, especially in the mill area.

(3) the exhaust systems should be periodically cleaned to insure good, efticient operation. Removal of sawdust and chips promptly should help to reduce the fire potential.

(4) Aisles should be kept clear for easy rnovement of equipment. Adequate aisles would be 20 feet if possible. If smaller aisles are necessary, good enforcement of housekeeping should be of prime importance.

(5) Fire fighting equipmentshould be checked periodically to see that it is available for immediate use.

(6)

Refueling of yard equipment should be done in an open area, motor shut off, aPProved fire extinguishers available, and an approved nozzle or safety can for the filling operation.

(7)

Heating equipment should be checked for defects. Combustibles should not be stored too close to the heating unit.

If electrical space heaters are used in the office areas for the clerical personnel, check the electrical wiring and pull the plug each night.

Electrical applianees such as coffee pots, hot plates, etc., should be on asbestos plate or pad. Electricity should be turned off at night.

( 10 ) Perimeter fences should be checked to see that dry weeds, brush, and blown trash are kept away.

(ll) Storage buildings raised above the ground should have the lower part screened or boarded to keep trash from accumulating under the building.

(12 ) Know the fire department telephone number in your area. Turn in the alarm immediately. Don't wait until the fire is out of control before calling the fire department.

It is a wise manager who knows that even a small fire can interfere with his operations. Valuable equipment can be put out of commission, as well as loss of materials. Review your operation and take action today. Tomorrow mdy be too

(e) late to prevent expensive losses.

The big rural housing/fix-up market

URAL housing, until recently a scattered market overlooked bv almost everyone, has become one of the hottest growth areas in the con' struction field.

The new priorities given to rural housing needs and opportunities by the administration have been spurred by the realization that 70 ,. percent of America's population lives on only 2 percent of the land.

The provision of decent housing in rural areas is also getting attention because no fewer than half of the nation's six million substandard I housing units are found outside of the cities.

To correct thi"s siluatinn, three rnillian ol the six mi,llinn subsid, ized' low-incorne howing units proiected, lor the nex,t ten years will be built i:n rural America,

How big is rural America? Sixty million people! Most people think of ' rural housing in terms of the old homestead, or the little log cabin in the woods.

, In fact, B0 percent of the rural populationor 48 million peoplelives in small towns of up to 5,500 population. Such towns are now classified by the Farmers Home Administration as part of the rural population. The other 12 million people live on farms.

For purposes of administering

rural development programs, consideration is now being give.n in Congress to including towns of up to 10,000 population, which would increase the rural share of the total population by six million people, or another 10 percent.

Story dt a Gfonce

A little known factor in the housing and fix-up market: rural homes can mean new business to those equipped to serve this market . . . new government programs are a big factor.

The rural housing market is in three segments:

(l) Farm-homes, many of them dilapidated and badly in need of replacement or repair.

(2) Housing for about 260,000 migrant farm workers, most' of whom require shelter at several locations during the year.

(3) Shelter requirements of the many thousands of small towns across the countrv.

Our thanks to the American Plywood Associaian fqr their kind permission to reprint this excellent article.Edinr.

Multifarnily housing has considerable potential as a solution in small towns. However, as recently as 1960, single-family detached units made up 96 percent of the rural housing market.

The Farmers Home Administration of the Department of Agriculture is the federal agency responsi' ble for administering rural housing prograrns. It is the rural counterpart of the Federal Housing Administiation. Farmers Home Administration housing programs have grown more than 30-fold in the last 12 years. They are certain to be an increasingly important part of U.S. housing production in this decadeperhaps to the extent of 8 to 9 per' cent of all housing starts.

During fiscal 1969, these programs accounted for over 50,000 loans worth about half a billion dollars. In fiscal 1970, which ended June 30, these increased to 80,000 loans and more than a/n billion dollars.

Ahlwugh twt, yet approued, by Congress, the projected 1971 bud'get lor rural lwwing is almost 1r/2 billi,on iloll.ars. This would, support a,bout 150,000 loans.

In other words, the expected level of activity is double that of the last fiscal year and triple the 1969 level. It's anticipated that at least half of (Conirurl.u.

They and the large waste-fed furnaces that provide heat and steam for the dry kiln openttion have been replacd with new automatic equipment that is virtually smoke free. Straighter, more uniformly dry lumber is another plus feature of the installation, which also includes completely new kilns.

A new burner has also been installed that has reduced smoke emission by 75Vo-80Vo in the disposat of waste that is unusable.

Cleaner air and better lumber are definitely the results obtained from joining the L Q. Club (I Quit Smoking).

NNONTANA NtrWS

A SIGNIFICANT factor in the 1970 ^ homebuilding program in Mc,ntana was the Farmers Hdrne Administration through its credit services for new homes and home imProvements. FmHA reported last year that half of the substandard housing in the country and half the national housing goal is in the rural areas. (See related. story P. 1l' of this is' sue.)

With vastly increased fun<iing available for 1971, FmHA is gearing up to double its housing services from last year. This should have tremendous significance to most Montana dealers who must reach into rural

areas for a substantial part of their sales opportunities.

As of this writing, Montana's 42nd legislative assembly is in full session. Primary concern revolves about consideration and discarding of revenue proposals with exhortatory pressures mounting for sales tax or increased income tax, depending upon the political color of the proponents - gyrations that could well result in a complete impasse on revenue measures.

Meanwhile, a group of MBMDA members from Helena and Great Falls areas converged on a house committee hearing on lien law amendments and was highly instru-

mental in helping kill legislation which would have provided major headaches for the dealer. The entire membership owes these dealers a vote of thanks and appreciation.

It seems strange, at this time of year, not to be on the verge of the annual convention. I"or 197I, however, the convention committee is innovating by scheduling for midJune and a resort-type atmosphere. All members are urged to start planning for an interesting session at Glacier Park, June 10-12.

The roster of MBMDA associate members has been extended bY the addition of Robert P. Scilley, Fiberglas Supply & Contracting Division, BiUinss.

With regret we report the tragic death of long-time friend and MBMDA member, L.A. "PollY" Wallace of Great Falls in a highwaY accident. From many years experience as a salesman of building materials and as a lumber-dealer member of MBMDA, Polly was known and respected throughout Montana. ;

and in this unfortunate situation they have done an outstanding job. Some lengthened working hours to accommodate their customers.

ITEBRUARY 9, l9?1, will be long - remembered in the Los Angeles area. On that day, at 6:00 a.m.' an earthquake of considerable magnitude shook the area, centering its destructive force in and around the community of Sylmar and the town of San Fernando, both located on the north side of the famous San Fer-nando Valley and some 22 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

There are several lumber dealers in the area affected. So far as is known, no structural damage was sustained by any of thern. Most of their buildings are wood frame, but one was housed in an eight year old concrete block building.

The insides of most of the stores were badly affected, with merchandise

knocked from the shelves and scattered ovel the floors. Lights were knocked down and standing displays toppled. In one instance a larg:e safe strlftea to a position that prevented opening the front door.

Paint, hardware, doors and upper' grades of lumber were the items which sustained the most damage'

In the yards, lumber Piles were knocke<l over and the contents splead over the yard. Plywood stacks suffered the same fate. High piled lumber and plywood near fences was tipped into the streets and onto the sidewalks. A certain amount of loss was sustained due to breakage. The major loss was in time taken to separate the tangled heaps and restack the lumber properly.

But all the yards were open for' business that day to help the other affected members of the community. Truly, the building material dealer

A number of years ago the lumber association, through its insurance broker', Bayly, Martin & FaY, Inc., introduced a comprehensive business package policy for members. Coverage included fire losses to buildings and inventory, as well as comprehensive liability. It also included an all-floater coverage which includes but is not limited to burglary, robbery, thef,t, glass damage, fidelity losses and transit coverage, which includes damage sulTered to merchandise in transit if the damage is the result of an earthquake.

The coverage does not include damage to structures, etc., caused by earthquakes. Although insurance is available against this type of loss, not many have it because severe earthquakes are not as frequent in occurrence as are severe fires, So it is not considered worthwhile, especially with the deductible clause.

Bur:eau l00d/a average clause earthquake rates are: wood frame buildings-13d per $100 value; stock & equipment-9y' per $100 value.

Tieing EDP into your accounting system

D)ROOF that there are computer r systems specifically adaptable to the needs of the Iumber industry is demonstrated by the experience of Branson-Cross Lumber Co., San Leandro, Calif., which has converted the bulk of its accountins to electronic data processing.

Branson-Cross use.s a Qantel V, a new, relatively low-cost computer system. This system includes an input/output typewriter, a business data processor, and two magnetic tape transports.

Branson-Cross ships about 30 million board feet of lumber each vear with a total sales volume for all iumber items, including plywood, of

about $4 million annually. Most of the firm's business is wholesale to builders of apartments, commercial structures, and custom houses.

Story qt o Glonce

Use of a computer can be of great benefit to certain firms . two part story tells how system works more details next month.

Partners Don Branson and Irvin Cross comment that "the lumber industry has been slow to improve on manual systems. Even today we see companies larger than ours continuing to operate without any data processing equipment whatsoever.

They have three to four additional employees in the front offce. Frankly, we can't understand how they do it and stay competitive."

Branson-Cross has something like 600 active customer accounts. The system handles this business with a minimum number of operator entries because the magnetic tape files store a vast quantity of information. Up to 20 complete customer records are stored on a foot of tape and the machine can search throueh these records in about " ,""onJ. Wh"r, the desired record is located, its contents can be transferred into the computer memory for reference or updating in l000th of a second.

Nixon Report Gets OK

The timber resources section of President Nixon's economic report won praise from Western lumbermen, who noted that the President's report recognized the problems facing the industry in its attempts to supply the raw material for the nation's housing.

Support of the recommendations was given by Roy Utke, president of Western Wood Products Association, and general manager of Fruit Growers Supply Co.

Nixon explained in his report that more than half of the softwood sawtimber is on public land, and recom' mended to the Secretary of Agriculture that he make plans to increase timber yield from these fede;ral lands.

Another exclusive feature is a "quik-change collet" that is hand loosened and tightened simply by turning a knob atop the motor housing. This makes bit changing a onehand operation requiring no wrenches.
