Retailers Tour The Mills

From I-beams to environmental regulations, 56 employees representing 18 Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California companies learned a lot about the wood products business during a 12 hour marathon tour of three Red Bluff, Ca., plants.

First stop was the Louisiana-Pacific beam plant where a miniature model home, a video and an I-beam display prepared them for seeing l-beams manufactured and tested.

"It was amazing to learn about the different types of beams," said Greg Boom, Close Lumber Co., Sutter, Ca., "especially the strength tests which showed how strong beams really are."

(3) Sierra Pacific's Anderson mill. (4) & (5) Boseburg's plywood plant. (6) Les Sanders, LMA executive v.p., at Sierra Pacific's millwork olanl.

Following lunch hosted by L-P, the group moved to Roseburg's plywood plant. Dividing into small groups, they viewed the entire manufacturing process.

"It was fascinating," commented Tex Rickabaugh. "We watched plywood being manufactured from log peeling to finished product. This was really educational."

Gathering at a local restaurant, the group recapped what they'd learned and questioned foresters from the mills. Dick Connell, Western Wood Products Association, gave a presentation of InGrade Testing.

Following dinner, the focus turned to timber supply issues, Board of Forestry emergency regulations and environmental concerns stemming from the federal Endangered Species Act.

Tour members questioned why some timber companies had changed position to support California Governor Wilson's "Grand Accord" bill which is slated to become the Sustainable For-
