Timber Crisis Warning

Efforts by environmentalists to block sales of government-owned timber are eliminating jobs, closing mills and perhaps leading to an economic disaster, warned the Timber Association of California.
Preventing companies from selling timber from federal land would create "an economic crisis during a period of near-record U.S. demand for lumber and paper products," saY association oflicials.
According to a forest products industry survey of 106 companies in California, Oregon and Washington, 34 mills were closed and more than 900 people were laid off in 1988. If the current trend continues, another 2,222 of the industry's 39,317 employees are likely to lose their jobs. As many as 13,780 layoffs are expected after 1989.
Federal timber under contract to mills has dropped 200/o in the last two years in California and 190/o in western Oregon.
Almost 2 billion board feet of national forest timber in California, Oregon and Washington have been targeted in appeals or lawsuits during the past three years.
Environmentalists blame the timber shortage on the companies. "The reason mills are closing is that the timber industry has cut more trees than it has grown," says the Sierra Club's Carl Pope.
