Are you sure the check's in the A S COMPETITION has grown fiercer in re- Fl cent years, so has the need for stricter controls on company credit policies. Retailers and wholesalers alike are increasingly aware that all those beautiful gross sales numbers can turn to dust if sloppy credit practices turn potential profit to actual loss.
Some suggestions to help you keep the dreaded red ink off the ledgers:
Monitor the age of receivables. Set standard responses at definite time periods, i.e., 30 days, 60 days, etc. Compare your collection and bad debt ratios to industry norms. Don't be satisfied with an average rating; work hard to be in the most efficient bracket.
Be strict when allowing volume or time discounts. Don't allow a customer to take a 10 day discount when you don't actually get your money for 15 or 20 days. Don't be reluctant to ask for payment up front, either full or partial, if
mail?
DAVID CUTLER editor- publisher
you think payment may become a problem. This bit of good advice, however, had best be tempered by actual circumstances, lest you alienate a present or prospective customer. Obviously, the better you know the people, the more effective your judgment will be.
Commissions to sales people can and should be adjusted downward if it appears they are selling to obvious credit risks or are not following company guidelines on credit. Encourage slow pays to respond promptly by offering cash discounts. If this doesn't work, try penalties.
Whenever possible, try to obtain personal guarantees. It may just keep the real flakes from hiding behind a bankruptcy.
Don't be put offby debtors' sad stories or less than 100% payment. Keep in mind that they ordered the materials and promised to pay. They owe you the money and they ought to pay. No ifs, ands or buts.

Will the "r@1" please stand
IS THERE really a difference beI tween western red cedar grown in the U.S. and that grown in Canada? There are those who, depending upon which side of the border they're standing on, claim they produce the best.

"No, definitely not," says a spokesman for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association. "Our members are located on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border, but they all produce the same fine quality."
Western red cedar is known for being light, split resistant and strong. A lack of pitch and resin combined with a high percentage of heartwood and a natural phenol preservative contributes to its reputation of being resistant to insects and decay.
Story at a Glane
Many woods go by the name @dar, but not all are true cedars learn whicharewhich why some "cedars" ate softwoods while some are hardwoods.
Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) is grown only in the Pacific Northwest including southern Alaska and Western Canada (British Columbia). Actually a member of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). it is also known as Giant Arborvitae. The tree flourishes in wet mountain regions.
Examined under a microscope, the wood has about l0 million cells per cubic inch. This produces a highly workable wood with low shrinking and swelling characteristics. Thus, western red cedar is a very stable wood with superior paint holding capacity. Because it has a high percentage of dead air space, western red cedar has l2 times the insulating
value of stone or concrete.
Western red cedar is described by the Western Wood Products Association as growing to a height of 125 to 150 feet with a diameter of two to five feet. The Council of Forest Industries of British Columbia describes western red cedar grown in its temperate coastal and interior forests as reaching heights of 60 m (about 200 ft.) with diameters exceeding 2 m (about 6-l/2 ft.).They classify it as slow growing with the longest life span of any tree in the BC coastal forest. Over 200/o of the mature forest resource in that area is western red cedar.
Western red cedar lumber produced by members of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association is graded by the rules of the Western Wood Products Association, the National Lumber Grading Association and West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau.
The principal grading rules covering western red cedar lumber manufactured by Council of Forest Industries of British Columbia members is Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber, National Lumber Grades Authority.
Perhaps much of the confusion or differences of opinion about western red cedar result from the existence of other coniferous soft woods in the U.S. and Canada called cedar. Those who have researched cedar claim that the only true cedars (genus Cedrus) are the cedar of Lebanon, deodor and Atlas cedar, native to the eastern Mediterranean, northern Africa and the Himalayas.
Alaska yellow cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) grows along the Pacific Coast from Northern Oregon to Alaska. It is also called yellow cedar and yellow cypress.
Port Orford cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) grows on the western Oregon and extreme northern California coast.
Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is an aromatic wood used mostly for closets and cedar chests. Incense cedar (Libocedrus decurrens) grows on the Pacific Coast.
South American cedar (Cedrela fissilis), related to Central American, Honduras and Spanish cedars, adds to the confusion. Often sold under the name of Brazilian cedar, British Guiana cedar, Peruvian cedar or cigarbox cedar, it is a hardwood found in Central and South America.

A: Definitely. Many people use them to accent boring walls, as privacy screens for awkward windows or as a mock wainscot. There are as many uses for lattice as your ingenuity will allow.
Q: Is it necessary to paint or stain cedar lattice?
A: No. Although it will accept either stain or paint it can be left to weather to a silver gray. If you like the original color, you can apply a clear protective coat. It is best to stain or paint cedar lattice before installing it, using a spray if possible.
Q: Do cedar lattice panels come pre-manufactured or do I have to make my own?
A: You can do either. Cedar lattice panels are available in both square and diamond patterns in several sizes, but you can buy cedar slats and put together your own panels. Grille sections are easily assembled flat. Slats are stapled or nailed at the cross points.
It is best to paint or stain the lath before assembling the panels. Using a coating with a water repellent or mildewcide is advisable. Rust proof nails or staples should be used.

f f IESTERN red cedar lumber is a UU product which you can feel confident in recommending to anY customer-builder, remodeler or doit-yourselfer for outdoor use.
From siding to decking to garden structures, it performs well. The weather-resistant wood is adaptable and blends well with landscaping. Because it is easy to work with, it produces excellent results for a neophyte as well as a veteran builder.
As long as siding is seasoned before finishing and installation and installed properly, it is hard for your customer to mess up. He must be advised to apply building paper underneath the cedar, not a vapor barrier such as plastic film. He also must be steered to the right stainless steel, high tensile strength aluminum or high quality hot dipped galvanized nail in a length that will penetrate a minimum of 1-l/2".

Selling points for cedar suggestions for outdoor projects . . ideas for add-on sale potentials.
You can guarantee the success of a project if the customer lacks experience by providing him with how-to literature from the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association.
Selling points for cedar as an outdoor wood include the rich color, beautiful grain and versatility. A recognized resistance to decay and insects is provided bY a natural phenol preservative, an abundance of heartwood and a lack of Pitch and resin, but for ground contact cedar should be pressure treated unless heartwood is used.

Insulation qualities are another benefit. Extremely low density and a fine closed cellular structure make cedar an outstanding heat and cold transfer barrier. A flamespread index of 69 and a smoke developed index of 137 qualifies the wood for Class II or B building materials in all three model building codes.
A choice of clear grade or knotty grade in interesting patterns such as bevel siding, channel and tongue and groove with or without a V-groove offers design potential. Board and batten, board on board and other variations of pattern can be readily achieved. The availability of smooth or saw texture offers a wide variety of grain, texture and visual appearances. Eye appeal is one of cedar's strongest selling points.
For fences, screens, decks, gazebos, storage sheds, planters and outdoor furniture, western red cedar is an outstanding recommendation. It blends with the colors and textures of trees, plants and flowers. Good results are easy to achieve.
Cedar can be left unfinished to weather naturally to a soft pewter gray or it can be stained with a tinted, semi-transparent stain to complement landscaping or architectural colors. A water repellent should be recommended to reinforce the natural resistance to weather.
Outdoor projects from the simplest planter to the siding of a home or commercial building offer profitable opportunities for add-on sales and cross merchandising. Building paper, foam or foil sheathing, nails, hardware, stains, paints, finishes and water repellents are essential extras for any job.
Help yourself and your do-ityourself and professional customers by suggesting cedar with plenty of help and support for their projects. It will pay off for all concerned.

Ways to nail down cedar sales

F EOnn siding has the reputation of being easy to \, work with and highly resistant to splitting, but a retailer should be sure to specify the nails needed to achieve the best results.
Stainless steel, high tensile strength aluminum and high quality hot dipped galvanized are the recommended types of nails, since they do not cause discoloration. In addition to being rust resistant, preferably rust proof, nails used with cedar should not cause splitting even when driven near the end or edge of siding.
They should have adequate strength to avoid the need for pre-drilling and be able to be driven easily and rapidly. A nail should not emerge or "pop" at any time after being driven flush with siding. The nail head should not cause an unsightly, visible pattern on the sidewall.
The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association also recommends using a ring threaded or spiral threaded nail shank for increased holding power. Blunt, diamond or needle nail points are most commonly used. The blunt
reduces splitting while the needle holds well although it tends to increase splitting. Diamond point nails are most commonly used. A blunt or medium diamond and a blunt or medium needle point with a ring threaded shank are recommended for the best possible holding power with the least splitting.
Although stainless steel nails are the number I recommendation, high tensile strength aluminum nails because they are corrosive resistant will not discolor or deteriorate wood siding.
Hot dipped galvanized nails, although they usually do not cause discoloration, often vary in coating protection, thus presenting a potential problem.
Installation recommendations call for 10d (3") siding nails on the outer boards or battens of a board and batten, board on board or clapboard pattern with 8d (2-1/2") nails used on inner boards. Channel rustic patterns require 8d siding nails for 6" widths. Bevel patterns use 6d (2") siding nails. Tongue & groove patterns use 6d finish nails for 6" widths or less. Wider widths require 8d siding nails.

Bill Fishman & Affiliates 11650 lberia Place San Diego, Ca.92128ITHIN days after we engaged author Tom Peters 0n .Search of Excellence/Passion for Excellence) as a speaker for the National Home Center Show, he asked for specific details about the industry. With a little research we prepared the following "fact sheets" and a letter assessing the industry.
Maintaining competitive prices has played havoc with the bottom line. The giants, warehouse operators and national chains, are battling for market share in major markets, catching the independent retailer in the squeeze. In the search for increased margins, retailers have taken over the distribution functions, buying direct. The past few years have seen the demise of independent distributors. The domino effect has cut channels of distribution for some suppliers.
Governmental regulations have added new responsibilities for retail manage-
ment. Hot products such as treated lumber are being legislated out of some markets and in some states OSHA holds the authority to issue fines up to $10,000 per day to stores violating complex hazard communication standards.

Margins for manufacturers have been rocked by the squeeze by retailers and the skyrocketing cost of insurance. Un-

like in the food or health and beauty industry, it is difficult to pass along l0% to 25% increases to home center customers.
Increases in minimum wage affect home centers, just like other retailers, by raising total payrolls or cutting the available store help and customer service.
The industry is still hurting from lack of qualified management. Very little is available in structured through-theranks schooling for store management. Pirating is prevalent and so is recruiting from outside the industry.
The industry is at the threshold of available technology to assist stores in maintaining a consistent in-stock condition. Just-in-time inventory management, UPC and EDI are brand new terms to most retailers.
The home center industry still slumps badly in November and December, while other retailers post their highest volume. Trim-a-tree and gifty home care merchandise do not compensate for loss of home improvement sales during this gift-giving season. Warm weather months continue to post the highest volumes.
Major markets are saturated with warehouse outlets and national and regional chains. Independents who had found a niche in smaller rural markets now feel the hot breath of the chains and

IN LIVING COLOR
San Antonio can make your next building screaming yellow if you want. Orblack and white if you prefer.
By using pre-colored metal for sidings and roofs, we can make your facility a bright addition to the scene.
Pictured here is the shed roof building we erected for The Terry Companies at their yard in Ventura, Ca. It has 3,500 square feet under its one pitch roof for the

storage of lumber and plywood. It carries "The Terry Orange" company colors.
We can match your company colors or select colors that complement
the surroundings of the building.
Color is just one more example of how San Antonio works for you to produce exactly the building your company needs.

THe ENVIRoNMENTAL Protec-
I tion Agency (EPA) has issued final regulations that require owners or operators of underground storage tanks containing petroleum products to adopt measures to prevent corrosion of the tank, monitor for leaks, notify local authorities if a leak occurs, terminate use of a tank, insure cleanup resulting from a leak, and maintain records. An underground storage tank is defined as any tank with 100/o or more of its volume underground, including the pipes used for filling or dispensing the product. All tanks, regardless of age, must meet all the new requirements. The regulations took effect on December 22, 1988.
Tanks excluded from the regulations are farm and residential tanks storing less than 1100 gallons of motor fuel for non-commercial purposes, tanks storing heating oil for use on the premises, and tanks on or above floors in underground
areas, such as basements and tunnels. EPA has issued standards requiring owners and operators to maintain the financial ability to clean up contamination and to compensate third parties for damages. A minimum financial cap-
ability of $1,000,000 is mandated by law. EPA may phase in the financial requirements for small tank owners over a 1518 month period.
More complete information on the new requirements can be obtained by contacting WBMA at (206) 943-3054, our national association at (202) 5472230 or the EPA RCRA Hotline (800) 424-9346, 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.EST. Human nature being what it is, we all
fall prey to that kind of thinking. We should have or we are going to. There is nothing wrong with thinking back, reflecting on the past. Most vehicle collisions come from one of two causes: 670/o are rear-end (or related); 200/o are lane change (or related).
Here's a good trick to teach your drivers to avoid a read-end collision: Allow about three second travel time between vehicles; that is to say, watch the rearend of a vehicle in front pass an identifiable object; e.9., phone pole, line on the road, fire hydrant, etc., and then count offthree seconds. The experts say that a very slight three-second margin will prevent most rear-end collisions.
for some living in the past is a way of life. Some live only in the past, because they have no future. This doesn't necessarily apply only to octogenarians.
There are those who always live in the future. They dream, but they don't plan. They meander from one point in life to another, like a stream flowing across a meadow. As it flows down hill, it seeks the path of least resistance. We all know people who just go down hill.
When you have found yourself in a euphoric state, dreamily thinking about the future or the past, have you ever had someone say (or suddenly say to yourself), "Wake up, come back to reality"?
Henry Huntington is credited with the following: "l am a farsighted man. I believe that Los Angeles is destined to become the most important city in this country, if not in the world. It can extend in any direction as far as you like; its front door opens on the Pacific, the ocean of the future. The Atlantic is the ocean of the past. Europe can supply her own wants; we shall supply the wants of Asia. There is nothing that cannot be made and few things that will not grow in Southern California. It has the finest climate in the world; extremes of heat and cold are unknown. These are the reasons for its growth."
Mr. Huntington made this statement in 1912.
Not only did Los Angeles grow, but so did all of Southern California. We are the hub of the trade movement for the Pacific Rim Countries, just as Huntington predicted. Projections are for continued growth in Southern California. This means more jobs and more people and more people need more housing. The members of the Lumber Association of Southern California can be the firms that will furnish the materials to meet the housing demands of tomorrow.

Don't dwell on the yester years or daydream about the future. Make plans for tomorrow, today.
Make certain that the internal reality of your organization is consistent with external conditions.
Wake up. lt's now.

Foreign investors have a strong foothold in the marketplace. Major U.S. home center chains and manufacturers now answer to headquarters in Europe, Australia and Canada.
Regulations involving the harvesting and processing of lumber in the United States and unbalanced trade with other countries have put home center suppliers at a disadvantage and raised prices.

are being solicited by distributors, specialty retailers, and by manufacturers who bypass conventional channels of distribution.
Taking the lead from WalMart, a few major national retail chains are refusing to deal with manufacturer's reps, disrupting normal distribution channels
Failures, mergers, acquisitions and unfriendly takeovers have had an adverse affect on the industry. Suppliers are faced with fewer doors leading to market expansion. Consolidation of staffs has pushed qualified but aging executives back in to the job market. Business failures at the retail level have taken suppliers under with them, or at least wiped out years of profits.

Western Red Cedar Lumber Association

Quality Control Starts at a Very Early Stage at Pacific Southeast Forcst Products
Whatever happened tol:. .?
By Matt MoulderWarren Jimersonremember him? In 1965 he started the Wood Moulding Association, now the Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association, and served as head honcho until 1979.

Warren is still in the lumber business, but if you didn't know this, don't feel bad. The lumber mills he deals with are in far away places such as the Philippine lslands, Malaysia and South America. Jimerson is president of the import/export division of Contact Lumber Company.
Warren spends 12 of the 52 weeks in a year outside the U.S., a total of 25 weeks away from home. We suspect he makes a good income and there is no doubt he earns all that he gets. That's a lot of traveling.
Warien's former industry affiliations were Duke City Lumber Co. in New Mexico and Ceorgia Pacific Portland. Does anyone recall that CP used to have two sawmills near Oroville, Ca., at Feather Falls and Woodleaf? limerson was sales manag,er for these.
Then one day someone told him.-that he shouldn't wear white socks with a dark blue suit and Warren decided the life of a coroorate exec wasn't for him.
Spotting Owl Droppings
During the presidential campaign, Ceorge Bush was given the 3rd degree by reporters on the subject of his "silver spoon" image. One newsman asked if it were true that Bush was born in Creenwich. Ct.. posh community of posh communities. Bush replied, "Yes, that rumor is true." Then, he went on, "l didn't really want to be born there, but I wanted to be near my mother."
I had an opportunity to visit Creenwich for the first time last fall. I have been in some fancy towns before, but never a small town that has a Rolls Royce dealer with no less than 12 models on the floor. This town is so ritzy that on Halloween kids knock on doors and hand out candy. We saw a Mercedes downtown with a license plate holder saying "My other car is a Mercedes."
The trip was a tour de golf with Jim Brown, popular lumber insurance mogul, and Dr. Bill Bunstock, a good friend from Oroville, Ca. Following our round of golf at Creenwich Country Club, the caddy announced his fee was $200. Dr. Bunstock exclaimed a $200 caddy fee was outrageous, whereupon the caddy replied "that's what I used to say when I was a doctor." Incredible!
CBS Elects New V.P.s
Central Builders Supplies Co., Sturgis, Mi., has added two new vice presidents to its ranks, promoting lumber department director Steven D. Boone to v.p. of sales and electing James P. McAuliffe to v.p. of finance.
With 19 years experience in the building materials business, Boone helped to increase lumber department sales in 1988 by 270/o to over $125 million.
McAuliffe, a certified public accountant, recently joined the 525member, 42-state buying group.
Show Plan To Help Dealers
Ronald Rashkow, chairman and ceo, Handy Andy Home Improvement Centers, is a strong advocate of a new organization system for exhibits at the National Home Center Show.
"The idea came as a result of listening to dealer members' difficultiesa show too big to get around, with locations too far a apart," show advisers said about the new system which will group exhibits by broad product categories.
Exhibits for the March 12-15 show at McCormick Place East and North, Chicago, Il., will be grouped in 10 categories. These include lumber & building materials/building specialties; doors/windows/millwork; paint & decorating/wallcoverings; hardware & tools; heating/ water/air conditioning; electrical/ lighting/security; plumbing/kitchen/ bath; storage products/furniture/ housewares/automotives; lawn & garden/outdoor/seasonal; store equipment & services/trade & consumer publications/miscellaneous, multi-category; international exhibitor pavilions.
Higgins L.A. Replaced By Two
J.E. Higgins Lumber Co. is splitting its Los Angeles, Ca., operations in two, moving the Los Angeles division to Orange, Ca., and opening up a new San Fernando Valley division in Pacoima, Ca.

The Los Angeles yard, which Higgins had leased for l8 months, should be closed by March I, when the Orange location willopen. Under manager Bill Fitzgerald, the Los Angeles division will lease the Baywood industrial park, a complex owned by South Bay Forest Products Co., Orange, and adjoining South Bay's operations.
The Pacoima yard opened January 3 with manager Bob Mason.
"Our philosophy at Higgins is a personal operation with a small territory," says regional manager Steve Oberholser. "We can give better service if we don't have to drive 200 miles to the customer."
Sales/Fitness Seminar Series
The Westmark Group will sponsor a Sales/Fitness Seminar at the Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach, Ca., February 23-24. It begins with
lunch on Thursday and continues through 5 p.m. Friday.
A special dinner on the 23rd will feature Heidi Miller, founder of Heidi's Frogen Yozurt and a nationally ranked women's body building champion, as keynote speaker.
John Bates, president of the Westmark Group, said, "The purpose of these seminars is to help individuals involved in sales at all
levels increase their productivity through proven professional selling techniques and optimum physical fitness." Future seminars will feature such notable speakers as Greg Barton, 1988 Olympic double-gold medal winner.

TRINITY RIVER LUMBER
Gounterfeit Gradestamps
fAOUNTPRFEIT grade- Vstamps occasionally appear in the market even though the vast bulk of the dimension lumber shipped in the United States is gradestamped under the American Lumber Standards Committee program.
Despite the decades of success in ensuring quality standards through ALSC, "a significant and disturbing quantity of counterfeit stamped lumber continues to erode wood's reputation, " charges Lon J. Sibert, vice president, lumber division, Timber Products Inspection, "while endangering the well being of an unsuspecting public."

Sibert is quick to point out that "most of the framing or dimension lumber manufactured, traded and used in the USA is gradestamped under the ALSC program. Counterfeit stamps represent only a small portion of the market."
He describes counterfeit stamps as those which infringe on an ALSC recognized trademark. These stamps, he points out, may either be made without the authority of an ALSC approved agency, stolen or retained and used by a terminated facility without the knowledge of an approved
agency.
He cites several examples in Florida where the FBI is working with his agency on counterfeit cases because the federal trademark law is involved. His company also is investigating a counterfeit situation in New Mexico.
Sibert contends that a similar situation exists with mill stamped structural lumber produced by dishonest manufacturers.
"In the marketing of counterfeit stamped lumber," Sibert alleges, "it is not uncommon for the distributor to buy No. 3 dimension lumber, sand or even plane offthe gradestamp (if present), and maybe pull out the obvious bad looking pieces (wanes, splits, etc.) so as to present the buyer with lumber that does not look bad, but, nevertheless, has No. 3 strength characteristics with a new No. 2 stamp. The material may be scant in thickness and/ or width due to skimming off the gradestamp or original mismanufacture or shrinkage due to original excess moisture content."
He cautions that there are implications for the dealer or wholesaler who knowingly buys or sells lumber with counterfeit stamps.

Declining Starts Forecast
Fewer housing starts are predicted for 1989 due to declining housing demand and rising interest rates, according to forecasts made during the National Association of Home Builders recent Atlanta, Ga., annual convention.

Starts are expected to fall to 1,380,000, down 6.7% from 1988's 1,480,000 units. By midyear, mortgage rates are predicted to climb to 11% to 11.5% for 30-year fixed-rate loans, up from the current 10.92V0.
Despite the housing activity decline, the projection would represent the seventh straight year of more than one million starts, the longest post-war housing recovery.
Starts Hit 6-Year-Low
Housing starts dipped 8.2% in 1988 to their lowest level in six years, as last year's 1.48 million units neared the 1.06 million figure built during the recession year of 1982.
The seasonally-adjusted annual rate for starts in December fell 2.2o/o from November, although building permits during the month increased l.8o/0.
Analysts attribute the slight slowdown to rising interest rates and cooling housing demand from the aging of the Baby Boom generation.
"As we go through the years toward the year 2000, we need fewer and fewer net additions to our stock of housing. We're just not creating as many new households as we used to," says economist Richard Peach.
New Wood Dust Rules Set
OSHA will adopt the forest Products industry's recommendations on new workplace exposure limits for wood dust, setting a 5 milligram per cubic meter limit for both hardwoods and softwoods.
The agency had proposed a stricter cap for hardwoods, but the Interindustry Wood Dust Coordinating Committee proved it was unnecessary and would cost the industry $5.5 billion annually and close hundreds of manufacturing facilities.
A separate limit of 2.5 milligrams per cu. meter of dust was established for western red cedar, since the wood may cause allergic responses among some workers.
The new permissable exposure limits must be met by Sept. l, 1989, using any combination of work practices, personal protective equipment or engineering controls. After Dec. 31, 1992, compliance must be met using engineering controls.

Timber Crisis Warning

Efforts by environmentalists to block sales of government-owned timber are eliminating jobs, closing mills and perhaps leading to an economic disaster, warned the Timber Association of California.
Preventing companies from selling timber from federal land would create "an economic crisis during a period of near-record U.S. demand for lumber and paper products," saY association oflicials.
According to a forest products industry survey of 106 companies in California, Oregon and Washington, 34 mills were closed and more than 900 people were laid off in 1988. If the current trend continues, another 2,222 of the industry's 39,317 employees are likely to lose their jobs. As many as 13,780 layoffs are expected after 1989.
Federal timber under contract to mills has dropped 200/o in the last two
years in California and 190/o in western Oregon.
Almost 2 billion board feet of national forest timber in California, Oregon and Washington have been targeted in appeals or lawsuits during the past three years.
Environmentalists blame the timber shortage on the companies. "The reason mills are closing is that the timber industry has cut more trees than it has grown," says the Sierra Club's Carl Pope.
YOUR BEST SIDING DECISION
Going Solo: Fiberboard
HEN Louisiana-Pacific Corp. cut loose its Fibreboard division, Fibreboard could have been expected to take the first steps on its own shyly and quietly. But the "new" Fibreboard Corp. has by no means been content to settle for business as usual.
Story at a Glance
Spun off from Louisiana-Pacific last summer, Fibreboard aims for key acquisitions, a wood products focus, paring down of non-core operations... optimistic outlook on asbestos liability.
During its first six months as a publicly owned company, Fibreboard has instead been making headlines: "Fibreboard Announces Listing of Common Shares on the American Stock Exchange," "Fibreboard Receives Favorable Decision in Asbestos Insurance Coverage Case," "Fibreboard Expands Wood Products Operations," "Fibreboard Responds to Takeover Bid," "Fibreboard Moves into Larger Quartgrs"

In addition, Fibreboard recently began a bold restructuring of the company in an effort to fine tune its focus on its primary wood products sector. The firm is selling off its unprofitable businesses along with
moneymaking divisions that don't directly tie into its core wood products business.
A company on the move is illustrated by Fibreboard's recent acquisition of Snider Lumber Products, Turlock, Ca. Snider's two sawmills have an annual lumber production capacity of approximately 100 million board feet, and the remanufacturing plant has an annual capacity of about 180 million b.f. The acquisition increases Fibreboard's lumber production capacity by nearly 50% and introduces remanufacturing capabilities.
"Strategic acquisitions such as this play an important part in achieving our goal of managed growth and
development of our core businesses," says Fibreboard chairman and president Lawrence C. Hart. Fibreboard's busiest sector has been the wood products division. During the last six months, two new products have been introduced: a 5.2 mm MDF core panel and FibreLam, "the hardwood panel of the 90s." Mike Sampson, director of marketing, describes Fibre-Lam as a high quality hardwood panel with a "mini-veneer"-like waferboard core providing structural strength without the added weight, voids or cutting difficulties of other board core panels. The MDF product uses thicker (1/30") face veneers, laminated to a smooth consistencv. MDF
core.
The wood products division operates softwood lumber mills in Dillard, Or., and Burney, Standard and Truckee, Ca. The sawmills have a normal annual production exceeding 200 million b.f., producing about half industrial grade lumber and half dimension lumber and studs. The company also holds 140,000 acres of pine and white fir forests, supplemented by timbers purchased on the open market or at government timber sales.
The company also owns two independent fleets of trucks operating from three California locations. The combined 88 tractor trailers haul approximately five million miles
annually.
Other diverse holdings include Pabco Insulation Products divisionl Trimont Land Co., which owns a Lake Tahoe resort; a printing plate group, and Gourmet Gardens, a hydroponic greenhouse utilizing excess heat from the Standard mill to produce gourmet vegetables for fine restaurants.
Although the secondary operations are up for sale, Fibreboard is rich with assets, recently attracting a
tunity," says chairman and president Lawrence C. Hart.
takeover bid by a group of investors which included Archibald A. "Red" Emmerson, president of Sierra Pacific Industries, Arcata and Redding, Ca.
Louisiana-Pacific spun off Fibreboard because of the time and energy required to deal with Fibreboard's asbestos issue. The asbestos product liability suits have been a problem for Fibreboard as well as other firms which manufactured insulation products with asbestos prior to 1972. Fibreboard's aggressive attitude includes a willingness to talk honestly about the issue.

At the time of the spin off, Hart said, "We are entering into this new venture with our eyes wide openfully aware of our liabilities and the consequences they may hold, while being cautiously optimistic about their outcome and enthusiastic about the future." Fibreboard has since received favorable court decisions and reached an agreement in principle with one of its insurance carriers to provide payments for the asbestos bodily injury claims.
Fibreboard views the spin off as both a challenge and an opportunity. Say Hart, "We now have the opportunity to get closer to our customers, we have greater mobility, and the ability to act upon opportunities more quickly."
Action, immediate action, has become a way of doing business at Fibreboard.
