Western Red Cedar Lumber Association

Quality Control Starts at a Very Early Stage at Pacific Southeast Forcst Products

Whatever happened tol:. .?

By Matt Moulder

Warren Jimersonremember him? In 1965 he started the Wood Moulding Association, now the Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association, and served as head honcho until 1979.

Warren is still in the lumber business, but if you didn't know this, don't feel bad. The lumber mills he deals with are in far away places such as the Philippine lslands, Malaysia and South America. Jimerson is president of the import/export division of Contact Lumber Company.

Warren spends 12 of the 52 weeks in a year outside the U.S., a total of 25 weeks away from home. We suspect he makes a good income and there is no doubt he earns all that he gets. That's a lot of traveling.

Warien's former industry affiliations were Duke City Lumber Co. in New Mexico and Ceorgia Pacific Portland. Does anyone recall that CP used to have two sawmills near Oroville, Ca., at Feather Falls and Woodleaf? limerson was sales manag,er for these.

Then one day someone told him.-that he shouldn't wear white socks with a dark blue suit and Warren decided the life of a coroorate exec wasn't for him.

Spotting Owl Droppings

During the presidential campaign, Ceorge Bush was given the 3rd degree by reporters on the subject of his "silver spoon" image. One newsman asked if it were true that Bush was born in Creenwich. Ct.. posh community of posh communities. Bush replied, "Yes, that rumor is true." Then, he went on, "l didn't really want to be born there, but I wanted to be near my mother."

I had an opportunity to visit Creenwich for the first time last fall. I have been in some fancy towns before, but never a small town that has a Rolls Royce dealer with no less than 12 models on the floor. This town is so ritzy that on Halloween kids knock on doors and hand out candy. We saw a Mercedes downtown with a license plate holder saying "My other car is a Mercedes."

The trip was a tour de golf with Jim Brown, popular lumber insurance mogul, and Dr. Bill Bunstock, a good friend from Oroville, Ca. Following our round of golf at Creenwich Country Club, the caddy announced his fee was $200. Dr. Bunstock exclaimed a $200 caddy fee was outrageous, whereupon the caddy replied "that's what I used to say when I was a doctor." Incredible!

CBS Elects New V.P.s

Central Builders Supplies Co., Sturgis, Mi., has added two new vice presidents to its ranks, promoting lumber department director Steven D. Boone to v.p. of sales and electing James P. McAuliffe to v.p. of finance.

With 19 years experience in the building materials business, Boone helped to increase lumber department sales in 1988 by 270/o to over $125 million.

McAuliffe, a certified public accountant, recently joined the 525member, 42-state buying group.

Show Plan To Help Dealers

Ronald Rashkow, chairman and ceo, Handy Andy Home Improvement Centers, is a strong advocate of a new organization system for exhibits at the National Home Center Show.

"The idea came as a result of listening to dealer members' difficultiesa show too big to get around, with locations too far a apart," show advisers said about the new system which will group exhibits by broad product categories.

Exhibits for the March 12-15 show at McCormick Place East and North, Chicago, Il., will be grouped in 10 categories. These include lumber & building materials/building specialties; doors/windows/millwork; paint & decorating/wallcoverings; hardware & tools; heating/ water/air conditioning; electrical/ lighting/security; plumbing/kitchen/ bath; storage products/furniture/ housewares/automotives; lawn & garden/outdoor/seasonal; store equipment & services/trade & consumer publications/miscellaneous, multi-category; international exhibitor pavilions.

Higgins L.A. Replaced By Two

J.E. Higgins Lumber Co. is splitting its Los Angeles, Ca., operations in two, moving the Los Angeles division to Orange, Ca., and opening up a new San Fernando Valley division in Pacoima, Ca.

The Los Angeles yard, which Higgins had leased for l8 months, should be closed by March I, when the Orange location willopen. Under manager Bill Fitzgerald, the Los Angeles division will lease the Baywood industrial park, a complex owned by South Bay Forest Products Co., Orange, and adjoining South Bay's operations.

The Pacoima yard opened January 3 with manager Bob Mason.

"Our philosophy at Higgins is a personal operation with a small territory," says regional manager Steve Oberholser. "We can give better service if we don't have to drive 200 miles to the customer."

Sales/Fitness Seminar Series

The Westmark Group will sponsor a Sales/Fitness Seminar at the Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach, Ca., February 23-24. It begins with lunch on Thursday and continues through 5 p.m. Friday.

A special dinner on the 23rd will feature Heidi Miller, founder of Heidi's Frogen Yozurt and a nationally ranked women's body building champion, as keynote speaker.

John Bates, president of the Westmark Group, said, "The purpose of these seminars is to help individuals involved in sales at all levels increase their productivity through proven professional selling techniques and optimum physical fitness."
