The Wilderness Society Galls
Environmental groups contact us periodically, so we weren't surprised to hear The Wilderness Society on the other end of the line. What we didn't expect is that they wanted to buy advertising in this magazine to tell their story.
As their real, though unacknowledged, goal is to eliminate all tree harvesting in America, we told them we felt it was inappropriate and that we wouldn't accept their advertising. (Their ad did, however, show up in one of our competitor's newspaper.)
The caller was pleasant, an eager volunteer fresh from school who couldn't understand why I wouldn't allow the Society to tell "the real story" about U.S. forests. I told him what I tell people outside our industry: if lou knew the facts, you would see the environmentalists' claims for what they are, mostly nonsense, and that the better view is held by our industry. He didn't agree. I couldn't convince him, and the call concluded.
He was right about one thing. There are plenty of people within this business who wholly accept the environmentalist line. The Wilderness Society is smart enough to know they can further their cause by proselytizing our people.
This business has always complacently assumed that all our people reject the tree huggers' message. Not so. During the last three decades the schools have provided us with new employees whose opinions are contrary to what the industry that feeds them knows to be true.
These failings certainly are not the fault of the students. Brought up on a convincing but inaccurate perception of the environment, they carry with them the baggage of ignorance. Not stupidity, just ignorance. The former is not correctable, the latter is. The new hires also bring a formidable challenge: the need to educate our own people on the true story of American forestry.

ACQ Preserve is standardized by the American Wood-Preservers' Asociation (AWPA) and the Intemational Conference of Building Officials (ICBO). It's easy to use. It takes energy efflclem@y to sell windows
IURING the last decade, the winl-f dow industry has exploded with new technology designed to increase energy efficiency.
Today, the new window systems are much more advanced than in the past, and it is easy for consumers to
become confused. Faced with highly technical terms and a variety of choices, they often rely on dealers to help interpret the information.
"Many consumers don't realize that a window composed of a single pane of untreated glass can account for up to 25Vo of a home's heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer," says Dan Reinbold. district manager of window and door manufacturer Larmco Windows. "To open a sale and gain a customer's trust, it can be helpful to provide the consumer with the basics of new window technology and explain the value of the technology with regard to their heating and cooling bills."
He adds: "Whether offered in a brochure or through a one-onone discussion. background information can help the consumer make an educated decision based on what is best for his or her particular situation."
Among the most widely avail-
able window features:
R-Values/U-Values
R-value is one way to measure a window's thermal efficiency. It represents a window's resistance to heat flow. In most cases, the higher the number, the better the insulating properties of the window. R-values are typically measured from the center of the window. They do not necessarily reflect the overall efficiency of a window unit.
The U-value is the reciprocal of the R-value and is used in evaluating a window's performance by measuring a window's heat gain or loss. A lower number is most desirable when referring to U-values. To obtain an accurate measurement of a window's overall performance, thermal measurements should be taken from both the center of the window and the window's edge, and then averaged.
Consumers appreciate an explanation of these numbers, particularly when coupled with estimated energy cost savings. They will also appreci-

ate it if you call to their attention that very few states have any control over what a window manufacturer or dealer claims their window R-value is, and that windows should not be judged on this one numerical indicator alone. Air infiltration, durability of frame and sash materials, and aesthetics are just some of the other factors to consider in sizing up a window's value. R-values greater than 5 should be regarded with caution.
lnsulating Glass
When it comes to energy savings, insulating glass is perhaps the most widely recognized way to increase a window's R-value. An insulating glass unit consists of two pieces of glassjoined together at the edges by a spacer/sealant system. Obviously, glass by itself is not an effective insulator; however, air trapped between panes ofglass can be.
To further increase their efficiencv.
ENERGY SAVING options are driving the window market.
16 Tus MrncHlxr MlclzrxB Jnruunnv 1998
manufacturers offer insulating glass units filled with argon gas instead of air. Unlike air, argon does not conduct heat and as a result is a better insulator. Argon is environmentally safe, relatively inexpensive, widely available, and reduces noise.
"One of the most common complaints from consumers about insulating glass windows is that the airtight seal on the edge of the glass has failed, allowing moisture to infiltrate and permanently fog the inside surfaces," Reinbold says. "This ruins the view and can cause water damage to window frames and floors below. With this in mind, it is especially important to point out to a potential customer that the material used to join the glass in an insulated window is instrumental in determining the wiridow's overall efficiency."
Spacer Systems
Another popular means of saving energy involves the use of an insulated spacer, or edge seal, to help minimize conduction of heat through the edge of a window. Insulated spacer systems first gained popularity in the North and soon became known as "warm-edge technology," referring to how they help windows stay warm on the inside of the home--even around the edges.
Although warm-edge technology is
typically marketed more heavily in regions with cold winters, the same applied technology is just as beneficial to those in warmer climates who are concerned about high air conditioning costs. Just as an airtight spacer can prevent warm air from escaping through the edge of a window, it can also prevent air-conditioned air from escaping.
Reinbold predicts that the continuing focus on energy conservation will further increase the number of consumers who inquire about insulated spacer systems. There are several types of spacer systems available, such as Tremco's Swiggle Seal, a thin strip of comrgated metal (for structural rigidity) embedded in a butyl material. "Because butyl is non-conductive, (these) windows maintain a consistent temperature from the center to the edge, reducing unsightly and damaging condensation. In fact, because the butyl material is also an excellent insulator, it prevents the transfer of air and ensures that windows filled with argon gas maintain their integrity, further reducing energy costs," he explains.
Low-E Glass
Although low-E glass is not new technology, it is being used more and more by window manufacturers to address the public's demand for ener-
gy efficiency. Low-E glass has an invisible coating that prevents longwave heat radiation from infiltrating the home. The coating on.the glass filters out the infrared rays which can heat up a room and inhibits the penetration of ultraviolet rays which can cause upholstery and draperies inside the home to fade and deteriorate.
Manufacturers are now offering a version of low-E glass specifically suited to wanner climates. Although regular low-E glass will turn back some of the radiant heat. these Sunbelt versions can do a more effective job of reducing heat gain in a home.
The Future
The new technology on the market today, and that which is sure to follow, shows that windows have come a long way from the once-standard single pane of glass. Windows need not be a source of energy loss in the home. Homeowners want all the benefits of natural light and energy efficiency. For the housing industry, this means new homes will be built with more windows than ever before. For the remodeling industry, owners of older homes eventually will need to replace outdated, inefficient windows with the new energy-savers to help maintain the value of their homes.

cast: Smooth sailing for'98
By Karl W. Lindberg President Southem Forest Products Association
SEAS ROLL. On a given day.
\)Saddam Hussein will risk miscalculation and much of the world will edge toward the precipice of a devastating war. Asian economies and financial centers will have a nervous breakdown and threaten to unhinge the U.S. stock market, placing part of our economy in peril. The Fed will succumb to an itchy trigger finger and finally nudge up interest rates. Trade disputes will erupt and settle. Several political storms will rage in an election year. And yet, the voyage for most businesses in America next year will be perceived as fairly smooth sailing, endangered only by occasional squalls and rocky shoals.
Final
production figures
for 1997 (should)register in the 15,8 to 15.9 billion bd. ft. range-setting another modern day record
Business as usual in 1998. Hard work rewarded. Problems encountered. Opportunities available for those with true grit and gumption.
Americans have for several years now enjoyed an incomparably good economy, marked by steady growth, plenty of jobs and minuscule inflation. As we turn into a new year, there is no reason to project anything but a continuation of that good fortune-nor any reason to be tenibly surprised if events go off the deep end. But we think it will be a good year for busiNCSS.
Not a bad year for the wood products industry, either. As with any industry, we face major problems, and must take steps to solve them. As is abundantly clear, the wood products industry will be resource driven, as the cost of raw material continues to be of greater concern than its availability. The well-intentioned but sometimes mindless environmental constraints placed on timber supply from the West are still in force. That's shifted the industry's center to the South, which has an available resource base, and is heeding the cry: "Plant trees!"
Of course, a seedling planted tomorrow won't become a merchantable tree for many, many years. So for 1998, the southem pine lumber industry in particular must learn how to survive, indeed thrive, by using younger, smaller trees in a business environment of rising stumpage prices. That's an enornous challenge. It demands new efficiency, new technology, new marketing.
Members of the Southern Forest Products Association, who produce southern pine lumber in a dozen states throughout the South, look to their association for assistance. One solution, of course, is to turn out valueadded specialty products such as MSR "Prime Grades," millwork or furniture stock that will bring higher returns. Such end uses must be cultivated by the association's marketing efforts so that ready demand is manifested in the marketplace.
Another solution is to continue developing market sectors that imported wood species and non-wood substitutes such as plastic and steel compete poorly against-such as pressure treated southern pine, and the inherent strength advantages of southern pine in structural applications.
Southern pine lumber manufacturers are expecting final production figures for 199'1 to register in the 15.8 to 15.9 billion bd. ft. range-setting another modern day record. They look at 1998 and expect another total in the 15 billion bd. ft. range-probably a bit lower, but that's quite high.
The new year before us is truly a blank page. It is thus receptive to those who are ready to greet fresh challenges with hard-wrought, innovative solutions. Certainly there will be choppy seas to sail. But for those who are up to the trip, and willing to earn with effort the rewards, the new year truly offers happy sailing.

Home Depot To Add 61 Stores In California
In an $850 million expansion program, Home Depot will open 61 stores in California by February 2000, bringing its total to 156 locations in the state.
Of the 61 new stores, two each will be built in the San Joaquin Valley and along the Central Coast,24 in the Bay Area and 33 in Southern California.
In Orange County, for example, Home Depot now operates 12 locations, including recently unveiled units in Laguna Hills, Garden Grove and Yorba Linda. They will open in Cypress this year and in Brea, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Lake Forest, La Habra, Rancho Santa Margarita and San Juan Capistrano in 1999.
Others to open this year include
Payless Casts Off Bankruptcy
Payless Cashways, the nation's fifth largest building materials retailer, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization after an uncommonly brief 135 days.
As part of the closing, approximately 54Vo of the common stock of the new Payless Cashways was issued to the bank group led by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
The company's secured lenders and members of the official creditors' committee also selected a new slate of directors.
David Stanley relinquished his role as chairman. but remains c.e.o. and Susan M. Stanton remains president and c.o.o. They are joined on the new board by interim non-executive chairman Peter G. Danis. Boise Cascade Office Products; David M. Chamberlain, Genesco, Inc.; H.D. Cleberg, Farmland Industries; David Gundling, Hagemeyer Foods; Max Hopper, Max D. Hopper Associates; Donald Roller, ex-U.S. Gypsum Co., and Peter M. Wood, ex-J.P. Morgan & Co.
Their plan calls for Payless to spend $153 million on capital expenditures by the end of 1999, while reducing its interest expense from $60 million in 1996 to $29 million by the year 2000. They'll be relying on a "Dual Path" strategy, with stores focusing on either pro customers or serious d-i-yers.
The chain operates 164 stores in 20 states under the names Payless Cashways, Furrow, Lumberjack, Hugh M. Woods, Knox Lumber and Contractor Supply.
Fairmount, Van Nuys, Woodland Hills, Pomona, Lancaster, Simi Valley, Goleta, Santa Maria, Chico, West Sacramento, Napa, and East Palo Alto.
The company attributed the expansion to a resurgent California economy and homeowners' increasing willingness to spend money on repair and remodeling projects.
In addition to 61 new locations. larger replacement units will be added in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Fremont and Milpitas.
"Rail transportation of our products throughout the Western and Southern regions is only slightly better now than it was at the early part of the century."

Millwork DC Changes Hands
Millwork distributor Hillsdale Sash & Door, Wilsonville, Or., and Bothell, Wa., has been acquired by BMC West with its $36 million take-over of Texas-based parent Lone Star Plywood & Door Corp.
Hillsdale, purchased from Clackamas, Or., businessman Wendell Walker and Portland investment firm Endeavour Capital, has 125 employees and annual sales of about $25 million.
BMC, which retained all Lone Star and Hillsdale managers, "wants to be $l billion by the year 2000 and we're part of that acquisition trail," says Hillsdale general manager Ken Hawkins.
Founded in 1942 in the Hillsdale area of southwest Portland by the Pascuzi brothers, Hillsdale Sash & Door has grown into a leading distributor of doors and windows to local customhome builders. The company estimates it now has about 407o of the Portland area's custom home market.
In 1979. the Pascuzis sold the business to Walker and Portland area residents Bill Farrens and Bob Harrison. A Bothell door distributor was acquired in 1981, and a few years later the Hillsdale yard was moved to Wilsonville.

G-P Further TrimmingDistribution
Georgia-Pacific, after taking fourth-quarter write-offs and charges that resulted in an unspecified net loss for the period, will consolidate its building products distribution division and has separated its timber business from other, more cyclical operations.
Chairman/ceo Pete Correll said the write-offs and charges "are more than 889 a share," and cover such areas as a closed gypsum facility in Colorado.
After building products distribution again lost money in 1997, the company will take more aggressive action: shuttering distribution centers, laying off workers and reducing product lines. Correll said G-P is determined to return the division to profitability in 1998, and "it's clear we cannot operate profitably in all geographic areas or with all product lines."
It remade its stable timber business into a separately traded concern, Timber Co., to increase shareholder value and its outlook on Wall Street. Timber Co. began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "TGP." G-P's other operations-pulp, paper and building materials-continue to trade on the Big Board as "GP," now under the name Georgia-Pacific Group. Executive v.p. of timber Donald L. Glass will serve as Timber Co.'s president and chief executive officer.
L-P Settles OSB Lawsuit
Louisiana-Pacific has agreed to a 2O-year warranty for its Inner-Seal OSB to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the products were defective.
L-P offered to warrant the performance of OSB sheathing products back to 1984 and ahead20 years to 2017.
