D-Blaze Fire Retardant Treated (FRT) wood is a new generatlon con. struction material for weather-protected applications. And it really is best known for what it doesn't do.
Obviously, D-Blaze FRT wood doesn't bum easily. That's just for openers. It doesn't cause problems with building codes or insurance rating bureaus. It doesn't bloom. It doesn't cause corrosion on steel truss plates, either. It doesn't go hygroscopic on you, even under very humid conditions. When properly ventilated, D-Blaze will not fail, even when roof temps soar up to 170" F. On top of everything else, D-Blaze FRT wood doesn't cost an arrn and a leg.

New Web site, new Internet directory
As we begin The Merchant Magazine's 75th anniversary year, technology is playing an increasing role in several aspects ofthe magazine. We can't even begin to imagine what Jack Dionne, our founder, would have thought as he labored with Volume 1, Number t,aacL.ln tgZZ.
Like many companies, we have instituted a Web site. You can reach us at http://www. building-products.com. But don't forget the hyphen; otherwise you'll reach a gentleman in South Africa with a similar address. Such is the World Wide Web.
Through our Home Page, you can access several of the most popular features of the magazine. News Briefs, New Products, New Literature, stories on industry companies and people, the Calendar of Coming Events, Personals column, classified advertisements, circulation information plus anything and everything else we can report on that you might find interesting and helpful.
Additionally, our site will feature industry facts and figures as well as information on various
firms and groups that make up this great business. Plus hyperlinks to other sites.
To paraphrase Walt Disney at the opening of Disneyland, our Web site will never be finished. we'll always be working to improve it so that it becomes a must-see as you navigate the Internet. As with the magazine, we hope you'll continue to use phones, faxes and fountain pens to let us know what we're doing right or wrong and how our new technology is serving you.
In this issue is an industry first: our Internet Directory, another tool we hope you find helpful in dealing with our technological world. Despite our extensive research, it is not as complete as we would like. But given the global nature of the Internet, this is probably not surprising. If we've missed you, please let us know so we can include you next time.
We trust you find our two new technolo gy features of great value. Best wishes for the New year and our New World.

Retail forecast: Will you sink or swim in'97?
By Gary Wrigbt President G.A. Wright, Inc. Denver. Co.
1996 will prove to be the best year lfor retailers for the rest of this decade. Beginning in 1997, a number of converging trends suggest one of the worst retail market environments in the last 50 years.
These trends include an aging population of people with a declining demand for consumer products. There is a significant decline in the number of young adults who normally contribute the most to the economy in terms of retail sales. The budget deficit and national debt will prevent the government from employing any meaningful fiscal measures to stimulate the economy and, on the contrary, the move by government to solve these problems will have a negative impact on growth. Also, the continued expansion of the retail industry, in light of the prospects of declining demand, will result in a much more competitive market environment. These converging trends will cause a rash of retail failures.
The expansion activities of many retail chains is reminiscent of the froth of activity in the financial markets on the eve of a crash. They have the engine of growth turned on and they can't get it turned off. Ofcourse, their stock prices demand that growth continue unabated.
1996 signals a turning point in the fortunes of retailers for many years to come. A significant shift in buying patterns will occur because of the long-term growth in the population of old consumers and no growth in younger consumers. All of the opportunity for retail growth in the next 20 years will come from the aging market. And, the companies that will cater to this market are not the companies that grew so rapidly during the
'70s and '80s by selling to the growing mass market of young adults.
Home Centers
New houses purchased by baby boomers in the '70s and '80s are increasingly in need of repair, stimulating demand for a wide variety of products sold by home centers. However, the aging consumers who live in these homes are increasingly disinclined to do the work themselves. Consequently, the fastest growth in the home center business will come from companies that provide a high level of service. Retailers who not only sell the product but come out to install it will be the most successful.
Lumber & Building Material Yards
Because of the huge decline in young adults, the demand for new 'homes will decline proportionately, causing problems for lumber yards and companies that supply materials for new home construction.
The Big Boxes
Big box category-dominant stores have expanded rapidly at just the wrong time. It is a concept that fit the market environment of the '70s and '80s much better, when there was a fast growing population of young adults. But it is not a concept that matches well with the demographic trends of the next 20 years. It's not that the concept won't work; it is working and the aggressive expansion

by this sector is resulting in sales gains. With an over-stored retail marketplace, intense price competition has retailers making every effort to drive costs down. The big box is the logical result of this attempt to gain market share. These stores provide convenience, selection and low prices.
However, this expansion is taking place in a market that will be increasingly less inclined to shop this type of store. These stores generally have poor service and are unable to tailor selections to local niches and buying habits. Because of their size, they must draw from a very large area, making the drive for many shoppers unacceptable. Although there are exceptions and some stores are overcoming the obstacles, maturity in this business will come rapidly and numerous failures can be expected.

values and durability, vinyl has made its mark in windows and doors. In 1987, vinyl held l07o of the U.S. window market with 7.2 million units. Metal (39 million units) had a 547o share and wood (26 million units) 36Vo. In eight years, vinyl reached 20.4 million vnits (27.zEo share), at the expense of wood (24.2 million unirs,32.1Vo) and especially metal (30.6 million lur;,its,4O;7Eo).
By the year 2000, Specialists in Business Information expects vinyl to reach 25.2 million units and a 3l.4Vo share, with wood holding at 32Vo with25.7 million units and metal slipping to 36.57o with 29.3 million units.
But although vinyl, or rvc (polyvinyl chloride), is the most prominent and fastest growing resin in window and door applications, it is not the only one. Others, including acrylic, polycarbonate, reinforced polyester and various miscellaneous plastics primarily incorporated into window and door glazing systems, should also enjoy gains.
By 2000, one billion pounds of plastics will be used in the
U.S. each year for doors and windows, reflecting annual increases of 6.2Vo, according to a new Freedonia Group study. Plastic profiles and other components used in the actual fabrication of windows and doors will rise 8Vo annually over the same period to a value of $1.5 billion. Gains will be attributable both to inroads against competitive materials in structural and glazing applications and to an

improved outlook for the overall window and door industry.
Vinyl now accounts for 45Va of total demand and will rise nearly 7Vo annually to 460 million lbs. Aside from market share gains at the expense of aluminum framing materials, much of the increase will be attributable to accelerating opportunities in new construction applications, especially in the residential sector, and to increasing application as a cladding material for wood windows.
Polycarbonate and reinforced polyester will both exhibit favorable market gains due to increased penetration in a wider range of applications, such as window profiles, and improved cost/performance efficiencies. Acrylic will exhibit below average gains through 2000, reflecting heightened competitive pressures from other

plastics as well as from insulating g1ass. Polycarbonate, reinforced polyester and acrylic represent 907o of all other plastics utilized in windows and doors, with applications for these resins limited primarily to glazing and skylights.
Although glazing and skylights will comprise a substantial growth market, structural window and door components will continue to represent the largest and fastest growing product application for plastic resins, totaling 545 million lbs. in 2000. The residential sector (representing nearly 60Vo of demand in 1995) will remain the fastest growing end-use, reflecting market share gains for pvc and other resins in new construction and continued strength in the residential aftermarket.
While 70Vo of total demand for plastic window and door materials will continue to be generated by the aftermarket, new construction applications will become increasingly prominent as price/performance efficiencies continue to improve, fueled by an aging housing stock, a steady rate of home turnover, an expanding do-it-yourself market, and an increase in the average number of window and door products per household. Nonresidential demand for plastics in windows and doors will also accelerate significantly, benefiting from advances in the security and impactresistant features of the materials uti-
lized in this sector and a rebound in construction activity due to the elimination of excess capacity particularly in office and commercial settings.
The shift toward plastics in framing systems-at the expense of wood
and metal-will also be attributable to end users' growing acceptance of plastics, their increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, the scarcity and cost of wood, and improvements in the performance and durability of plastic window and door materials. Expanded opportunities for plastic resins in a wider range of product applications will also stimulate demand. Advances in the production techniques for vinyl, for example, will allow this material to gain market share in more complex window framing applications. In glazing systems, inroads for plastics will reflect substantial advantages in impact-resistance over glass, along with superior design flexibility, lighter weights and more favorable costs.
Dollar gains for plastic window and door materials will rise at a pace only slightly ahead of volume demand, due to the commodity orientation of most materials and significant price/performance enhancements in most material segments. Stiff competitive pressures from alternative window and door materials will also prevent dollar demand from exceeding volume gains by a substantial marsin.

Tleated southern pine rolls through the Rockies
A LTHOUCH about 6 billion board ll,feet of pressure treated southern yellow pine is produced each year, most of it is sold in the Northeast, South and Midwest. Yet now. more treated lumber is rolling to western markets for all kinds of outdoor projects, and major treaters are generating a sizeable volume of treated SYP for the Rocky Mountain market.
Treated southern pine was almost unheard of in this area five years ago, but it is now growing in customer preference. Major western retailers stocking treated southern pine include United Building Centers, Home Depot and Builders Square.
Part of the credit for southern pine's increased market share goes to field calls being made by Robin Archibald, the new Southern Pine Council regional marketing manager in Phoenix, Az.
Schollenbarger Wood Treating Co., Bernalillo, N.M., is treating southem pine lumber and selling it to selected retailers for decks, landscape timbers and outoor structures.
United Building Centers, Durango, Co., is among Schollenbarger's treated southern pine customers. UBC buyer Charlie Mason says that TOVo of its treated southern pine is being sold to the contractor trade, primarily for deck construction. "We only sell No. I grade, and our contractor and d-i-y customers like the appearance,"
Story at a Glance
Advantages of treated southern pine push the species westward through the Rocky Mountain market.
Mason says.
He adds that UBC has not yet conducted treated lumber in-store training events, clinics or promotions for its di-y or contractor customers "because the product basically sells itself."
SYP also has an advantage over other species since it does not require incising for deep penetration of chemical preservative, Mason notes.
Other retailers report that their cus-
tomers like the long-term durability of treated southern pine, and also that it is more consistently available than other species.
Industry observers expect treated SYP will continue to expand its western "beachhead" for several reasons:
o Many customers and retailers in the West already know about treated southern pine because they formerly lived in Southern and Eastern cities where the product was popular.
These customers are more than willing to use it again in western applications as they did in the East.
o Southern pine is cost-competitive, even for the No. I grade typically seen in the West.
o Treated southern pine can easily be stained a variety ofcolors.
SYP is a preferred species for pressure treatment because its unique cellular structure permits a more deep, uniform penetration of the preservative chemicals than other species.
o Treated southern pine is not just a decking material-it is widely used for docks, piers, marine applications, timber bridges, highway noise wall barriers, permanent wood foundations, and playground equipment.
o New preservative formulations that include water repellant sealers enhance southern pine's appearance over a longer period of time.
TREATED SYP is moving through Rocky Mountain area yards, such as UBC, Durango, Co.
UNITED Building Center yard mgr. Marc Lowe says SYP has eirned a phce in lhe region.

Cotter Merges With Servistar
The world's largest hardware wholesaler, Cotter & Co., has agreed to merge with number three, ServiStar Coast to Coast Corp., creating a new co-op called TnrServ Corp.
Combining nearly 10,500 independent retaifer members and initial annual sales of $4.5 billion, the megamerger marks perhaps the most serious challenge in any industry small businesses have presented to the onslaught of big discounters.
"By consolidating our operations we expect to give the owner/members better prices, better services and longterm shength in the wholesale indust4/," says Dan Cofter, president and ceo of Cotter & Co., and designated chairman and ceo of TruServ. Servistar pres. and ceo Paul Pentz will serve as TruServ pres., c.o.o. and board member.
The combined senior management will continue to report to a board of retail members<ight directors nominated from Cotter's board and seven from Servistar's.
As soon as all regulatory requirements are met in about mid-month, a
proxy vote with merger document and background material will be mailed to the two co.ops' members, who would exchange common and preferred stock in their co-ops at par value for stock in the new company on a dollarfor-dollar basis.
Under the proposed plan, TruServ's official headquarten will be at Cotter's Chicago, Il., headquarters, although several of TruServ's combiired businesses, including its $l billion lumber business, will be managed from Servistar's Butler, Pa., offices. The new company's 6,0(X) employees will be cut to about 3,800, and combined distibution centers will be consolidated from 15 to 12.
TruServ co-op members would keep their individual store names, but Servistar members will have to convert to Cotter's pricing system. Some overlap of store service area will also result, but no existing stores will be forced to relocate or change names.
Still, some members likely will be upset with the merger, and as a result Cotter and Servistar expect about 2.57o of their combined menbership
to drop out. *There are going to be some members saying, 'Geez, maybe this isn't in our own interest,"'says
Mike
president of competing co-op Hardware Wholesalers Inc., which hopes to start enlisting disgruntled Tnre Value merrbers.
McClelland,
Helping members understand the benefits of the merger is a new responsibility for Cotter c.o.o. Steve Porter, one of the key authors of the TruServ plan, who will serve as a consultant to the new company through the tansition.
Key to the plan is a $40 million fund created to he$ members to complete store upgrades and technological improvements, smoothing necessary transitions and making the stores more competitive.
The fund has three components:
(l) reitnbuning Servistar members for costs of switching over to Cotter's pricing system and vendors; (2) defraying the costs of retail automation or software enhancements, and
(3) making available $16 million for updates, improvements or opening a new store.

New Electronic Catalog For Distributors
Beginning in July, North American Building Material Distribution Association will distribute a monthly industry-wide electronic catalog on CDROM.
Thus far, 50 manufacturers have signed up to supply catalog information to Source+PLUS, and 95 distributors have subscribed to the service, which will be updated monthly.
The service was announced during NBMDA's 45th annual convention and conference Nov. 10-12 in
New Year's Resolution:
If you have trouble finding bills and other important papers, you are having an organizational breakdown.
"Getting organized is not as difficult as you might think," says Jim Brush, Sentry Group. "The average American spends 30 minutes a daY looking for misplaced papers."
. Sonrnlc
Take all the papers you need to go through to your work area and divide them into two piles: what holds interest for you and what does not. Throw away the no interest pile immediately'
Nashville. Tn. With more than 600 attendees and over 130 exhibitors, the show was the group's most heavilY attended since 1990.
Mark Kasper, Amerhart, Ltd., was installed as pres., succeeding Ron Calhoun. Pres.-elect is Dennis Mitchell, v.p. Robert Stolz, sec./treas. Dave Bennett Jr., and new directors Alvin Ballachay, Chris Tompkins, Mike Sexauer, Lyle Thompson, Jack Parks, and Bill DiGaetano.
Eliminate The Clutter
Next, label three file folders: To File, To Do and Financial. Divide the papers you've saved into a reference pile and an action pile, and put the reference pile into the To File folder.
Divide your action material still further. Anything having to do with money-billq, bank statements, etc.goes into the Financial folder' All other material-personal correspondence, doctor's reminders, etc.-goes in the To Do folder.
Ternlc Acrrox
Specify an hour or two each month
to empty the Financial folder, paying bills, balancing your checkbook, etc.
Once a week tackle the To Do folder. You probably won't be able to accomplish everything in the folder in one session, so make a list of things remaining-in a notebook or on a calendar, ifthey have a deadline.
Frr,rxc
Establish a system you feel comfortable with and then stick to it. Create folders for key areas, such as Health, Correspondence, Taxes, Entertainment and Warranties. Establish as few or as many folders as you need, and never hesitate to add or delete headings as your needs and interests change. Always keep folders in alphabetical order.
Pnorncrrnc
If you're like most people, You'll automatically place them in a metal file cabinet. Or you might take your most important papers and lock them in a metal lock-box or desk drawer' But during a fire, metal containers actually act as incinerators and will not protect your documents.
The most convenient and effective protection is a UL fire-rated safe, file or chest, which will protect its contents from heat, flames and humidity.

Ahieher level of commercial anf, industrial performance. I
rue, there's more than one way to build a tower. But where traditional
wooden-frame construction rs concemed. there's no better choice than using pressure-treated materials from J.H. Baxter. Whatever your needs, we'll work with you every step of the way to get you the right treated wood for the job.
Whether your project specifies that wood be above ground or below ground, there's a J.H. Baxter ffeatins process to meet your specific needs. Our wood-
treating professionals can assist you in adhering to strict building codes and environmental building conditions. We provide services to people at every level of the process - from the designing architect to the lumber retailer.
What are the challenges facing you or your customer?
J.H. Baxter can help you overcome them - with solutions like Chemonite'-treated (ACZA) fencing that reduces animal cribbing, Chemonite-treated poles that resist fire, or penta-treated light standards that retain their natural beauty for years. You just can't go wrong with pressure-treated wood. Whatever your building needs, call J.H. Baxter, toll-free, at l-800-780-7073.
