Tomorrow is canceled for lack of

1f, N acquaintance, in noting that we've enFtered a new vear. remarked to us that he now had 20 years experience in the business. We wonder. From what we've observed, it's more likely that he learned a few new things the first year he was in the industry and has mostly been marking time ever since.

The lack of meaningful experience is more widespread than we all like to admit. In that part of experience entitled education, consider how many meetings you've attended where it was Standing Room Only because people were so eager to learn. How many association meetings can you recall that were proposed and then canceled for lack of interest? Do you note seminar companies and home study firms beating a path to our industry's door because we have an all consuming thirst for knowledge?

Face it, our reputation doesn't attract outside purveyors of learning. We would like to have a dollar for every meeting we've sat in where half

interest

the chairs were empty and most of the rest were being warmed by someone with his eyes glazed over and his mind on the golf course.

Employers tell us too many of their employees won't stay an extra five minutes (sometimes literally) when given a chance to gain more knowledge. The smart, savvy ones who do care are the ones, naturally, who get the raises and promotions. Yet this cause and effect chain is too often lost on the laconic who just want to get by each day.

Thankfully, not all approach mental growth in life with such a negative bent. The progress made in recent years in this business shows we've plenty of smart, motivated and successful people.

If you've any lingering thoughts that some or all of the above just might apply to you, we suggest you enthusiastically tackle something new to you in business. We'll bet the personal satisfaction derived won't be the sole benefit you gain.

New Mexico home center chain updates stores

LZEEPING up with progress in flSoutheastern New Mexico. T-Bird Home Centers is building a 15,600 sq. ft. replacement building for its Alamogordo store and combining its two Artesia units into one store at a new location.

March I has been set as the completion date for the Alamogordo building being erected on the same site as the present store which will be demolished after the move. The sales floor will be almost double the size of the present unit, allowing more merchandise with better arrangement. Product mix will remain relatively the same with continued emphasis on kitchen cabinets which Derrell Ballard, general manager of the eight store chain, calls "our best promotion. "

The Artesia T-Bird Home Center and T-Bird Home Center Specialties, a store stocking only specialty items such as carpet, vinyl flooring, cabinets, lighr tixtures, fireplaces and finishing items, will be relocated into a large building formerly occupied by a grocery store. This move will allow customer access to a wide selection of merchandise in one location.

fimely tips on narrow aisle lift trucks

fftHll-Ethe economic crunch ofthe80s did not create UU a need to get best possible use out of storage, production and distribution space, it sharply underlined the problem. And solutions.

Among solutions attracting increasing interest is the application of narrow aisle, electricity powered lift trucks. In some cases this equipment can be introduced with little cost except that of shifting othenrise suitable racks to tighten up the aisles. Other revisions might include adding racks to expanded space and extending the height of all racks where possible and practical. In other cases, new storage facilities are designed to obtain best usage from the narrow aisle machines.

Planning to get better use of storage space in your next improvement project? Here are a few things you need to know about application of narrow aisle lift trucks. Narrow aisle trucks are frequently used in combination with sitdown rider trucks and low-lift pallet trucks. Since narrow aisle trucks can handle pallets in narrower aisles than those required by sit-down counterbalanced trucks, they are frequently used in applications where space utilization is extremely important.

Story at a Glance

Narrow aisle litt trucks operate in 8 ft. aisle . . . use 50% of available floor space . versatile reach-type ver. sion outsells straddle model.

Since narrow aisle trucks do not lend themselves to truck andlor rail car loading or unloading operations, low-lifts are frequently used for unloading trailers or rail cars and transporting products to storage areas where narrow aisle trucks are used for high stacking.

Pictures tell the basic story. Fig. I represents a storage aisle 100 ft. long with 4 ft. long x 4 ft. wide loads stacked on the floor. A conventional sit-down rider lift truck requires an aisle width of approdmately 12 ft. to service this storage area. As a result, only 4O9o of the available floor area is used for storage.

Fig. 2 represents a storage aisle that is serviced by a narrow aisle type truck. It saves valuable storage space by operating in an 8 ft. wide aisle. ln this situation 5090 of the available floor area is used.

There are two kinds of nanow aisle lift trucks: straddle and reach. The reach-type came about via simple evolution. Noting the space-saving advantages of narrow aisle straddle trucks, warehouse operators decided narrow aisle trucks were the way to go.

Llff trucks continue to develoo to fit the needs of the user. This narrow aisle machine helps to get the best possible use from storage soace. lt was introduced in 1983.

Unfortunately, warehouses had a problem. Straddle trucks required a minimum clearance of 5 to 6 in. between pallets and between pallets and rack uprights. It became a case of scrapping existing racks or finding a narrow aisle truck capable of servicing the existing racks. In an effort to solve this problem, the reach-type truck evolved.

The reach-type truck combined the versatility of conventional counterbalanced trucks with the space saving advantages of a narrow aisle truck. It could be used in applications for which only counterbalanced trucks were previously considered suitable.

This versatility has increased its usage. Today it outsells

N.M. HOME CENTERS

(Continued from page 10)

Lovington and Roswell stores serve regions occupied in cattle and sheep ranching and oil drilling operations in the Permian Oil Basin.

The format for the stores with the exception of the specialty store in Artesia has been a two to three acre lumber yard with a 6,000 to 7,000 sq. ft. showroom. The once predominant contractor business has been supplemented with d-i-y customers who now account for about 5090 of the sales volume. Acknowledging this change, the stores have made a strong commitment to the d-i-y market with lines including floor covering and kitchen cabinets as well as standard building materials, lumber and hardware.

Because of the strong d-i-y trade, much of the business is cash and carry, ranging from 3090 - 8090 of the sales, depending on the store. Product emphasis also varies from store to store. For example, Alamogordo shoppers are strong buyers of lumber materials for fencing and small household projects. Retirees in Truth-or-Consequences want paint, wallpaper, floor covering and other fix-up supplies. Ruidoso, with lots of new rustic type construction, requires pine siding and other residential construction supplies.

S.W. Stephens is president of the chain which headquarters in Alamogordo. To keep up with the record sales volume of the '80s, now averaging $tS million a year, management has installed both a computer system and telecommunications system. Both have achieved "tremendous savings in operating and equipment charges," according to Ballard. The stores also participate in the Builder Marts of America program.

In addition to replacing and renovating existing stores, management is not adverse to thinking about adding additional units. There has been talk for several years about adding a couple of new stores, although no new locations have been acquired to date.

In addition to the retail units, T-Bird operates a lumber and building materials wholesale distribution center in Alamogordo. Allied Forest Products also owns White Sands Forest Products, a stud mill in Alamogordo, which supplies the T-Bird units.

E YEAR 1983 was an exciting one in the home center industrv. New words were permanently added to our trade vocabulary. "Warehouse operation" was the phrase most commonly seen in print, followed by "software package," "ROI" and "share of market."

Some new promotional ideas were created, and some old ones recycled. Here are a few of the happenings and never tried promotional ideas that found their way into my notebook:

TT{E VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

There have been a number of recent articles about privately held companies and smaller corporations benefiting from a board of directors or an advisorv

board. Carefully structured and administered, these advisorsoffer inputand direction relating to financing, marketing, merchandising, management, R&D, and expansion.

The board meets periodically with a fixed agenda. These directors and advisors take their functions very seriously and the input is often more succinct than the typical management consulting company.

Beware of putting your own banker on the board. Being open about company problems might prove too frightening to him.

MORE GEODEMOGRAPHICS

Just as we all began to understand the jargon of the researchers, i.e. "Demographics, geographics, and psychographics," they invent a new tool-"geodemographics." The Claritas Corp. has introduced PRIZM Geo-demographic Market Segmentation and Targeting. Their definition:

"PRIZM is a 4Gpoint, life-style segmentation system strong enough to explain, and accurately predict, consumer behavior.

PRIZM is also a versatile and efficient targeting tool, geocoded to actual consumer neighborhoods, and the retail outlets which serve them."

Another systern called ACORN (a classification of Residential Neighborhoods) is being marketed by C.A.C.I., an international management consulting firm. They classify 256,000 neighborhoods in the U.S. into 44 distinct homogenous neighborhood types. Their smaller "block groups" average only 30) or so households. The research can be valuable for site location studies, credit promotions, and media decisions.

BUILDING CREDIBILITY GAPS

Beware of two critical areas in your advertising. (1) Avoid running regular priced merchandise under a "sale" heading. If it's easily recognizable as a regular price it will cast a doubt over the value of the other items that you promote. Try "event" themes rather than "sale" themes as the banner when running regular priced merchandise.

(2) Coupon sales should be designed to restrict sales, Use coupons on loss leader items to bring customers into the store. Offer the lower price only if the customer presents his coupon (or with a duty manager's authorization to avoid losing a customer who forgot his coupon). Keep the merchandise priced and signed at regular prices. Showing the coupon price and offering it without a coupon makes those customers who went through the trouble of clipping feel that they have been asked to perform a foolish and unnecessary task.

DECKING

MOUNTAIN STATES

THE NATIONAL Lumber and Build- f ing Material Dealers Association legislative committee, of which I am a member, met in Kansas City on Dec. 5 to dwelop plans for the l9&4 Conference with Congress and to develop a strategy for the Mortgage Rdirement Account legislation currently in Congress.

Nothing has happened to the MRA bills since August due to the Treasury Department being unable to provide Congress with meaningful figures on the MRA's potential impact on the national debt. Initial estimates based on "wild guesses" projected a $5 billion deficit due to lost tax revenue resulting from heavy utilization of the MRA. Senator John Tower (R-Tx), the bill's originator, sent the Treasury researchers back to the drawing boards to take another look.

Throughout the frnal months of 1983, Congress and the Treasury Department were preoccupied with tax measures (all

of which failed to pass in the final days of the 1983 session). Treasury "put-off' Senator Tower's requests for data on the basis that pressing tax bills were making it impossible for their researchers to get to the MRA issue.

With the adjournment of Congress in late November, Sen Tower renewed his efforts to pressure Treasury into completing its study of the MRA fiscal impacts prior to the end of Congress' recess on January 23.

The MRA bill is not going to move without a favorable fiscal impac-t report. The NLBMDA in Washington and we at the MSLBMDA are helping Sen. Tower bring forth a report by writing letters to key personnel in the Treasury Department and selected leaders in Congtress, urging the completion of a fiscal report that will include the favorable aspects of the MRA as well as the short-term revenue loss.

MRA supporters believe the fiscal impacts will be minimal and quite likely favorable in the long run due to:

(1) savers using their IRA allowance to

pay off mortgages early would lose a tax deduction in direct proportion to the interest saved, and

(2) increased construction resulting from an increased mortgage lending activity and quicker availability of down payment funds resulting from MRA investments will generate tar( revenues at every level of government.

Earlier unfavorable Treazury estimates assumed that MRA would generate some $15 to $20 billion in new IRA tax-deferred savings investments in the first year (rougfily a?,/Jto 2590 increase over present IRA investment levels). Supporters believe that the majority of MRA investments in the early years would result from a "shifting" of present IRA investments and savings patterns from one IRA option to another.

At this time savers can use their IRA allowance of up to $2,000 a year per wagee.uner to purchase stocks and bonds, real estate partnerships, or savings certificates insurance investments, and other options.

NLBMDA's Legislative Director Harry Horrocks is working with the staff of the U.S. Savings and Loan League in an effort to secure their research assistance in the development of a credible study of the MRA ouside of the Treasury Department. Horrocks is also securing cost estimates from private research firms. If necessary and feasible, the NLBMDA will invest the $20,000 it had set aside last year (1983) for MRA promotion.

be setting the stage for the lumber business in 1984.

As previously reported, both the Tucson and Phoenix new residential markets are increasingly turning from traditional block to frame construction. Wood now commands about 9090 of this market.

A sales vice president for a major Phoenix area homebuilder recently commented that "It doesn't seem that block construction will ever again dominate the home market as money conscious lenders, builders and consumers seek ways to economically put people into new houses." He continued, "new construction techniques with wood frame offer better opportunities to cut down on costly construction time and expedite occupancv. "

Flagstaff, the economic hub of Northern Arizona, has been experiencing good residential growth for the past two years. Home construction there is expected to remain strong but to level off as available housing is absorbed by the resale market. Its emerging importance as a regional rail and transportation center indicates continued economic growth for years to come.

The resort communities of Sedona and Pinetop,/Show Low are largely dependent upon the exclusive retirementrecreational home market. Interest rates generally influence second home construction, although they have had little impact upon the two hundred thousand dollar residential market which remains very strong in these areas.

The mile high community of Prescott has attracted considerable outside investment as a result of a developing employment base and of its attraction as a retirement area. Its stable economy and construction appear to continue to grow throughout the year.

The communities along the Colorado River also are experiencing growth. Bullhead City's rapid increase in population reflects the expansion of gambling facilities across the river in Nevada. While the mobile home market is strong in that area, there is continual improvement in both commercial and residential construction. Reports from Lake Havasu City indicate that all construction looks promising through the year. The recent flooding had a major impact upon Parker

and the rcreational communities further south. Rebuilding is widespread to accommodate the recreational crowds which are attracted to that area.

Reasonable growth is orpected for the Yuma area as its economic sphere of influence continues to expand to include areas of Southeastern California.

Most of the remaining population

areas of the state, however, report slight or no construction growth as they largely feel the impact from mining and agricultural activity. On balance, it should be a good year for most of the lumber businesses in Arizona.

On the legislative scene, state lawmakers have been in special session seeking funding solutions to the overcrowding problem at state prisons. The legislature will commence its regular session in January with finding sufficient revenues for the state's business as its priority task. Recent flooding in many parts of the state has created extraordinary expenditures which must also be

Lynch, who writes for this magazine, presented a seminar next day entitled "Looking into the Black Hole of Delivery." In it he presented detailed ideas and actual operating numbers to aid dealers in containing costs in moving material.

He pointed out that ?.00/o of all operating costs are delivery-related, saying, "no one sku has that large an effect." Lynch also observed that 20s/o of the customers produce 8090 of the business. One first step to cost control is instituting a trip ticket scheme. Lynch said this should produce a 5s/o - 100/o mileage decline immediately. Odometers should be checked frequently as many are intentionally broken by drivers seeking to avoid close scrutiny of their activities.

Former banker Steven L. Cranfill advised dealers next on "How to Deal with your Banker." Noting problems caused by the growth of a business, he said that 6090 of the business failures in l98l had net

Manufactured Housing Gains

Manuf actured housing will account for 370/o of the housing starts in 1995, compared with 28s/o in 1982, according to William Harden, senior market analyst, Predicasts, Inc.

"factory-built housing, whether a mobile home or some other type, may be the standard method of producing housing, with the site-built house limited to the high end of the market."

Mobile home shipments, which now account for almost 5090 of all new single-family homes priced under $80,000, will increase almost 690 annually. By 1995, shipments will reach 500,000 units a year, or 3390 of total single-family starts. As the average pricetag on a new conventional home continues to skyrocket ($83,900 and climbing), the less expensive mobile home will benefit.

Pressure Treated Warranty

Koppers Company, Inc., and many of the licensee producers of Wolmanized pressure treated lumber now are providing a 3O-year warranty for farm and agricultural uses of the product.

This warranty was initiated in 1982 for any consumer purchasing Wolmanized pressure treated lumber and Outdoor@ wood when the wood is used in conjunction with a residential structure. Strong consumer response to the warranty has prompted Koppers and its licensees to expand the program to include farm and agricultural uses.

Wolmanized lumber is warranted for 30 years against damage by termites or decay that would render the lumber structurally unfit in its application. The warranty covers lumber used in agricultural structures such as fences, sheds, barns, sill plates, board siding, and other larm and ranch pro-

jects. It does not apply to foundation systems (i.e., All-Weather Wood Foundation), fence posts, vineyard stakes, tree supports or water immersion applications. The warranty is available throughout the U.S.

Each piece of warranted lumber is identified by a blue or orange colored label stating the warranty terms to assure the purchaser of a quality product. The program requires no paper work or record keeping on the part of the distributor or dealer. To obtain Iumber replacement under the warranty, consumers must retain the label and proof of purchase.

New uses for old yellow

ELLOW poplar (Lirioden' dron tulipifera), long a popular hardwood for furniture, boxes, planing mill products, veneer, paneling and miscellaneous wooden articles for the home, is receiving new recognition as a framing lumber following research studies by the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory and the School of Forest Resources at North Carolina State University.

Because it is an abundant and fast growing tree found only in the eastern part of the United States, particularly in the Gulf and Southeast Coastal States, a Push is being made to use it locally in place of spruce, pine and fir shiPPed in from the West Coast and Canada' Tests conducted bY several lumber mills in North Carolina, in-

cluding Johnston Lumber Co. and J.L. Sizemore & Sons, have shown that the lumber is comparable to other species in cutting and manufacture.

The North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service is promoting the use of yellow poplar to builders and

has issued an informative brochure. They are suggesting that it maY be the framing lumber of the future. Yellow poplar is an ancient tree. Geologists believe that during the Cretaceous age there were 16 different members of the genus, Liriodendron, but that during the Ice Age 15 of them perished, leaving only the tree now found in the South.

Yellow poplar is said to be the tallest hardwood in North America, reaching a record height of 200 feet. Because of this, it produces some of the largest clear logs available. The usual life span of a virgin Yellow poplar is about 500 years although some have passed their l000th anniversary.

As the tree grows to reach the sunlight, it sheds its lower branches.

"LOOKINGAROUND"says Paul Bunyan

This provides, even in young trees, a large percentage of clear lumber. Because the species grows only in rich moist soil where lots of sunshine is available, the quality of the wood is excellent.

Properties of yellow poplar include being moderately stiff with little tendency to split when nailed, staying in place, resisting warping, gluing easily, and accepting paint or enamel readily for a smooth, lasting finish. It is a favorite wood for use with hand tools. Yellow poplar is often considered the least difficult of all lumbers to kiln dry.

The total stand of yellow poplar saw timber in the South has been estimated by the Forest Service at roughly ll billion board feet. North Carolina reports the growth of 508,337,000 board feet in 1974, more than three times the 150,688,000 board feet harvested. It is claimed that the harvest could be doubled with no increase in forest management intensity. At the turn of the century the annual cut exceeded one billion board feet. Latest production figures indicate a cut of

the straddle truck by 5 to 1.

To specify a narrow aisle truck correctly, you must understand the language. Following are terns, definitions and a sketch (Fig. 3) to help you amplify certain terms.

Base Arms - The base arms or straddle anns are indicated on the drawing.

Base Arm Height - The height from the floor to the top of the base arm. This generally measures 4 in. on straddle trucks and 5 in. on reach trucks and corresponds with the diameter of the load wheels.

Base Width - The base width is the distance across the base arms (outside dimension).

Open End Clearance - The distance between the base arms. Often referred to as the straddle or base arm I.D. (inside dimension).

Headroom - An electric truck term measuring the distance from the rear of the truck to the fork face.

Step Height - The distance from the floor to the platform the operator stands on.

Reach Mechanism - The pantograph on a reach truck that extends to pick up a load from rack storage. The extension on the Allis-Chalmers ACNR 30/40is2Ain., for example.

Double Reach - A reach truck equipped with a reach mechanism capable of extending approximately 42 in. which provides the capability of handling pallets stored two deep.

The Merchant Magazine

Cab Width - The distance measured across the operator's cab.

Overall Truck Height - The distance measured from the floor to the top of the overhead guard. The minimum dimension on the ACNR is 90.5 in. regardless of mast lowered height.

Spring l,oaded Caster - Sometimes referred to as the stabilizing caster, it is located on the right side of the cab for lateral stability.

Clearance Between Loads - The distance between loads in rack storage. Typically 4 in. with reach trucks and 6 in. with straddle trucks.

Tilting Reach - Most reach trucks provide tilting forks as a standard or optional feature. It helps load, pickup and deposit, and cradles the load while traveling, thus minimiz_ ing load damage.

Zero Aisle - The minimum right angle stacking aisle in which the truck will operate. This is a line-to-line dimension. In other words, the rear of the truck would just clear the opposite side of the aisle. As a result, normal practices dictate that a minimum of 6 in. be added to the zero dimension to insure proper operating clearances.

Deadman Brake - The disc brake mounted on the armature shaft of the drive motor is released by the operator standing on the brake pedal. If the operator removes his foot from the brake, the brake is applied.

Reverse Steering - Many users of narrow aisle trucks prefer reverse steering to conventional automatic or directional type steering. With reverse steering, the truck moves in the opposite direction it is steered.

Both straddle and reach trucks are very maneuverable because they carry loads between their wheelbases. The operators work from a standing position. The straddle truck (as the name implies) straddles its loads. Therefore, 6 in. space must be maintained between loads to allow sufficient clearance for the 4 in. wide straddle arms. The straddle truck turns from the aisle into the load.

To pick up a pallet, the reach truck operator extends the reach and pallet forks into the pallet as the truck remains in the aisle. He then raises the load above the height of the straddle arms and retracts the reach mechanism. At least 4 in. spacing between loads is recommended.

wholesalers and their guests from the mills of that area and Oregon.

This year's annual luncheon had even less form and structure than previously. Gone was the annual presentation of a "Lumberman of the Year," victim of some controversy over past choices and the organizer'sdesire to avoid industry bickering.

Ralph Heath of California Cascade Industries, who helps organize the event, said attendance was approxi-

mately 350, up 100 from the depressed conditions of last year.

First held more than a decade ago to bring together mill and wholesale people, the luncheon does that admirably in a direct fashion: bar opens at 1l:00 a.m., food service at 12:30 p.m., bar stays open for several more hours.

about 650 million feet per year. The heartwood will often show extreme discoloration because of minerals found in certain soil formations. Black, purple, red, green, blue and variations of these colors change the appearance of the wood, but do not lessen the strength or value of the lumber.

Yellow poplar also is recognized for an acrid inner bark which can be used as a stimulant in medicines. The leaves of the tree are dark shiny green and measure about five or six inches in both length and width. In the autumn they turn a deep yellow. The fruit of the tree is a compact cone of winged carpels. Measuring about three inches long and a half inch wide, it ripens in September or October. The flowers, tulipJike in shape and size with six petals, vary in color with a light orange center. These blossoms account for yellow poplar also being known as tulip poplar and tulip tree.

It is estimated that the excellent rate of growth can insure a perpetual supply of yellow poplar at the present rate of cutting. Predictions are that in North Carolina the use of yellow poplar as a framing board could save home builders as much as l0 to 2090 in costs.

century. He urged the audience to keep fit, maintain a positive attitude, be part of the team, know the product and "work like hell."

Several panel discusions followed.

John Sweet, Sause Bros. Ocean Towing Co., Coos Bay, Or., described changes in methods and volumes in coastal shipping of lumber into the Southern California market and said they expect additional business out of

Eureka, Ca., since the closing of the Northwestern Pacific RR.

A review of the NWP and its possible future was described by the next panelist, Bryan R.R. Whipple, president of the Northwestern Pacific Acquiring Corporation that hopes to operate all or part of the line in the future. The railroad's owner, Southern Pacific, seeks abandonment of the NWP which has carried vast quantities of lumber out of California's North Coast over the years.

If his company is not successful in its takeover attempt the line could be shutdown by Spring and the rails removed by mid-summer 1984.

Tiucking expert Gary Hartman, Forest Products Transporation, Ukiah, Ca., related the effects of deregulation and noted that the industry is currently in a period of re-regulation. These new rules and taxes have made major additions to shipping costs, he said. As an example he noted that tire costs are up more than $30 each due to new federal excise taxes.

Friday morning, November 18, the Second Growth, an under-35 year old group that is part of LASC, presented

a panel on change. Mark Boone, Champion Lumber, said part of their program of relating to change was to continue to do what they have always done best, avoiding forays into markedly different business areas.

Bill Jones of Far West Fir Sales urged owners and managers to communicate with their employees, make them feel a part of the team and describe what exactly is expected of the employee. Greater use of courtesy and praise where warranted would be helpful, he said.

Home Lumber Company's Jim Julian included an extensive slide presentation to graphically explain how his company had diversified and changed, used existing personnel in new operations and had successfully targeted new opportunities.

Doug Willis, an employee of South Bay Forest Products who has since gone to work for J.H. Blevins, Inc., told how eastern wholesalers often sold contractors direct and speculated on the possibility of that becoming widespread in the California market. He foresees more vertical integration of wood industry majors, such as Weyerhaeuser, Louisiana-Pacific and Boise Cascade.

Concurrent panels ran that afternoon, one on credit for retailers, one on resource availability for wholesalers.

The problems of extending credit to framers was discussed by retailers Gary Weis and Marc Myers, Chandler Lumber; Tom Mullin, Teny Building Centers; and Ralph Bobik, an attorney. After detailing specific money problems the consensus was one of genuine concern with framers' poor pay practices and the loss of direct contact by dealers with their builder customers due to the role of the framing contractor.

The supply of lumber in the future was addressed in a wholesaler meeting by Paul Ehinger, exec. v.p., Western Resource Alliance, who outlined the problems involved on both sides by the controversial proposals surrounding extension of contracts for cutting timber. The factors of speculators, investors, government and industry contracts as well as market needs and financial aspects were described.

In addition to the social, sports and fun side of the conference, new officers and direclors were elected. New president is Milton Johnson, Home
