The Outlook for 1967

IYfHEN lT comes to forecasting what business

W will be done in lumber and building materials in the eleven western states during 1967,the easiest course to follow would be to go along with the experts who are in print as seeing things picking up Ly mid-year. Of course, the only problem with this is that ih"." ut" the same experts who said that 1966 wouldn't be too bad, maybe even a little better than the previous Year.

We think that this year the experts are probably right that the upsurge in business will be going at the start of summer, but here we part company' We fieure that business should start back up this spring and be well along by summer.

- The main reason for our optimism is that in the last few weeks, since many of the experts made their prognostications, things have improvEd at a faster rate than previously expected. While this could be a will-of-the'wisp shuffie of the figures in the statistical swamp, we like to believe it is a true indicator of things to come and that the good things are fast overtaking the bad.

Several months e1o, several predictions saw fewer single family housing starts this year than Iast. Since that time there has been a shift to the almost universal present opinion that 1967 housing starts will exceed last Year.

A good example oI this situation regarding starts getting better faster than expected came from the National Association of Home Builders. Their earlier surveys said l.I million starts, which would be less than the 1.25 million generally agreed as the final freure for 1966. Now their latest count sees 1.3 million and that the upturn will be "sometime in the spring."

Until just recently many thought housing starts would continue the slide to further record lows, particularly after October's dismal sag. But the number of November starts broke the eight-month slide, coming up lB.9 percent above October, though still well below the year before. But it is still an-

other indicator, we believe, that things are going to get better a lot faster than many believe. Building permits for November, the latest figures available, also show an increase, unlike permit figures {or the preceeding two months.

That there is a pent-up demand for housing can hardly be disputed. The bumper crop of babies in 1946-7, now 20-2I years old, is marrying and sending the number of new {amilies formed to record levels. This at a time when demolitions of existing housing, the old and unlovely derelicts of a changing society, increases. Continued govern' ment grants of money to communities for demoli' tion will continue to lessen the number of existing houses while more and more people will demand houses in which to live. The force of this demand from the young marrieds already shows in the dropping of vacancy rates below the norm o{ seven percent for the first time in seven years.

The above, coupled with increased savings deposits being reported by savings and loan associations before increases were expected, plus recent action by the federal government, give real reason for careful optimism. The Federal Home Loan Board recently released $500 million to the s&ls and several weeks earlier the Federal National Mortgage Association greased the skids with $250 million'

The prospects for remodeling, repair, do-it'yourself, etc. look better than last year when it rva:; literally a lifesaver for some firms. The future of this area of the business looked so good to giant U.S. Plywood that six months ago they changed their basic marketing strategy to aim at more of the remodeling market. Sears, Roebuck, Inc', which remodels on contract, says its 1966 volume was up 14 percent from the previous year. Many of the big supplier firms plan increased dealer support.

Not that this year will be a picnic, it won't. But it also will be far from a disaster. And iI the economic indicators keep changing before they were expected to change, it could be a better year than anvone now exDects.

dealers are bringing many lumber products into their stores instead of hiding them out back in the shed. And here's the lamp department where we found our fixture. Manager Webber had some doubts about this department, but fixtures have moved extremely well. "You can't sell from an empty wagon" is the way Webber looks at it.

Where effective Merchandising Finds A Home

Lerials dealer solve the problem of limited space and keeping up with his competition dollarwise?

Answer: diversiflcation of products and a stock that yields a good profit. At least that's how Bill Doherty at Mullin Lumber's new store in San Gabriel, Calif. feels about it.

"We enjoy selling to the general publie," Doherty explained. He pointed out that much of the work done to erect the new store was contracted from the local people. Their word-of-mouth advertising paid off as a result, Doherty contends.

With Mullin for about 20 years, he has seen fantastic change occur in the lumber business as well as in the retail building materials market. He predicts that the average man in San Gabriel will more and more do-it-himself with the items that Mullin's store ofiers.

"Versatility is the keynote of success with a smaller operation," he explains. ooWe've about 70-75 items out on the floor here and we're emphasizing decorative items."

Manager at Mullins for three years, Doherty points with pride lo tastlfully ornate displays which efiectively frame such household appurtenances as doorbells, brass knockers, Mediterranean door handles, baroque-styled mirrors and medicine chests, heraldic plaques made from plastics, and other items.

"The better we present them on the floor, the better our sales," he says, leading us around a corner to an efficient G-P panels display. Doherty also oversees the Mullin lumberyard, right outside the door and to the rear of the new store. Around 2,000,000 b.f. are on hand at the vard. which was lounded in 1946.

"We have discovered one thine interesting. People really like to decora-te. Inside and outside. Take doors for instance. .,." We were introduced to a complete line of hand-carved and machine wrought doors, a staple at Mullin's store and one of their hottest sellers.

Mullin's store stocks electrical supplies, some stains, doors, saw blades, tapes, and other merchandise, Clever and persuasive methods of floor promotion move these items in an incredibly short period of time. One display, wall-hung and facing Mullin's

entranceway, has turned over its items (saw blades, other small do-it-yourself merchandise) more than a dozen times in a record period of time.

Mullin's store is unusal in construction. It has 2" decking with fire-resistant shakes. Plysawn cedar was placed right over the stucco of their older building. The interior offices feature exotic wall woods and decorations Doherty's office is warm, Spanish in decor, and incorporates oriental elm.

LASC MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE

Dealers swap ideas, name new officers, plan for '67

fT WAS THE good attendance at all the r meetings that rvas probably the most noticeable feature of the Lumber Association of Southern California's l6th annual Management Conference. Despite the many attractions of Palm Springs, the meetings were full and it was Standing Room Only during several of the talks.

The total number attending was only slightly lower than last year, which is a good tribute to the association. particularIy considering the state of the biz for' many in the Califolnia Southland.

George Stein, immcdiate past president of the national dealer's group opened up the conference with a wide ansle look at dealer operations across rhe U.S. He said that many, if not all, dealer problems were the same across the country and that the old saw about this or that area beins a "special situation" was just not thar tiur.. Hustle is still the answer to most probIems. He also lauded compensatory pricing as a way to compete with the mass-. merchandisers. This way, he said, you can Ioose $3 on the door, but make 507 on the hinge and pickup an additional $2.50 profit on the lock.

That afternoon, Nov. 17, John Sullivan. 'Western Lumber Co., San Diego; Wally Hull, Hull Bros. Canoga Park; and Bill Cooper, Cooper Lumber, Los Angeles, related their experiences with commendable frankness on the joys and woes of cash and carry.

Cooperative advertising with other San Diego dealers pushing do-it-yoursel{ items and the like was explained by John Sullivan. Potential was good, he said, and results so far gave hope, but the going was far from easy.

Wally Hull explained that his yard actively sought kitchen remodeling business with the seven model kitchens displayed at their yard. A good consumer-directed ad budget backs up the displays.

Bill Cooper, introduced by panel mod. erator o'Duke" Speer as the Dean of the lumber supermarkets, told how they had departmentalized the store, one of the most modern in the country, and told of some of the inventory problems involved therein.

He also described the trials involved in

They pointed out that the framing packagc had gotten a bad name rvith some contractors due to an early idea that quality stepped aside for pro{it. Self-restraint in shaving pennies to get the job plus nearly error-free estimating was felt to be the way around the problems to the profits.

That night the lumbermen gathered at the bar set up in front oI the hotel for Sassafras (86 proof type) and a hayride to a desert cookout, complete with dancing to a western band.

Bruce Donley then related figures and facts on how to try and cope with the fiscal tentacles of Medicare. Wayne Gardner, LASC's capable executive veep reported on the status of the lumber standards.

Morning wrapup speaker was Conrad Jamison of Security F-irst National bank who gave a less than jolly forecast of the first half of this year. He did {eel, though, that 1967 would be the year the industry switched from surplus to short. age and that bu iness would pickup dur. ine the second half.

The President's luncheon introduced the new officers and directors. New president Pete Speek grabbed the helm firmly as he took over from retiring prexy Jim Maynard. Now-retired past-president S. G. "Sandy" McDonald was honored with a plaque recognizing his years of invaluable service to the group.

Selling seminar stresses profits in power tools

The old adages "seeing is believing" and o'experience is the best teacher" are paying great dividends for the power tools and hand tools divisions of The Stanley Works, and their southern California distributor, American Wholesale Hardware Co., and its retail dealer outlets.

Stanley Power Tools and Stanley Tools have been conducting a series of educational dinner meetings for retail lumber and hardware dealers. The purpose for Stanley: to show how easy it is to operate the company's newest Job/Master line of power tools.

Each person in attendance, including the ladies, was given the opportunity to use a power drill, sander, router, sabre saw and all-purpose saw.

A new complex of buildings is rising on the site of a $250,000 fire which virtually destroyed the lumber yard and office of Keith Brown Building Material Supermart in Salem, Oregon, early last year,

Six or seven stores are being built, the company said, and will represent a half-million dollar investment. Tenant retail stores will move into the new complex next month, Frank Brown, secretarytreasurer, affirmed.

Brown said the building center will feature paints, floor coverings, plumbing supplies, hardware and other items. The center will cover four acres and will serve the individual buyer as well as the contraetor.

Appointment of J. Mason Meyer as executive secretary has been announced by the American Hardboard Association at its recent annual meetins in San Francisco.

This announcement was made as more than 60 top executives of the American hardboard industry met to approve promotional, technical, and production programs for the coming year. Among reports was one which said that expansion of plant facilities indicates a projected industry capacity of 4.5 billion bf. Currently, the industry is producing more than three billion bf.

Notionql Mogozine Article Gives The Reol Focts On The Redwoods

Never have facts been so mangled as in the present controversy over a proposed coast redwood national park for northern California, concludes an article by Roving Editor Paul Friggens in thc December issue of Reader's Digest.

"Park proposals have been publicized on a gross misconception: that the nation is in danger of losing its last redwoods," Friggens charges. Popular myths about the age, size and extent of the redwoods get similar rough treatment.

The article reports that an estimated 25 percent of the best trees ever known are

now preserved in the state's chain of 28 coast redwood parks. The fastest'growing conifer species in America is adequately protected, according to the Digest editor.

Claims that redwood timber operators are reverting to the old cut-out, get-out practices arc {elled in the article's quotes from top authorities.

President Harry A. Merlo of California Redwood Association praised the expos6 as "the first breakthrough to the facts published by a major magazine." He commended the publishers of the most widely read periodical in the world for dispelling some of the dangerous myths alout the coast redwoods."

IHPA Convenes in Februory

The Imported Hardwood Products Assorriation will hold its llth Annual Convention in Palm Springs, Calif., February B-10. With its membership ranks bolstt'red during the year by the membership of the old Timber Importers Association of America, IHPA president G. Arnold Smith anticipates a {ull capacity registration. Last year's meeting attracted well over 100 im' porters, trading company executives, government officials and associate members.

Charlie Schmitt, executive secretary of IHPA, reports that negotiations to obtain a leading Washington official to keynote the meeting have been successful, the subject being "Building 1967-0r Where Do We Go From Here?"

Other important speakers will be IHPA's Washington, D. C. counsel, Myron Solter, with his up-to-the-minute "Capitol Scene" report. The Erawan Gardens l{otel is convention headquarters.

On the lighter side there will be an "Ice Breaker" cocktail party to help the newer members {rom TIAA get acquainted, and Thursday IHPA will hold its I'irst Annual Golf Tournament with John Osgood of Robert S. Osgood, Inc. as chairman. A complete ladies program has also been arranged and transportation to nearby Palm Springs and its world famous shops rtill also be available.

New Rockport Solesmon

Harry Merlo, head of Rockport Redwood Company, has announced the addition of Fred Dighi to Rockport's northern California sales force. Dighi will cover the Bay Area and North Coast County territory.

A native of Fort Bragg, Dighi was literally raised in the heart of the redwood country and his first job was with the old Sage Land & Investment Co. at Willits. He remained on after the firm was reorqanized as Willits Redwood Products during the mid 40's and was assistant yard foreman when he left to join California Redwood Sales in Santa Rosa 12 years ago. In all, he brings over 20 years of experience to Rockport's staff.

The California Building Material Dealers Association recently elected dealer Clem Dentis as president at their recent annual convention in Palm Springs.

Housing Shortoge Forecqst

The present lack of mortgage funds may result in a severe housing shortage, a leader of the U.S. ceramic tile industry has said.

Eugene F. Folks, president of the Tile Council of America, lnc., said the tight money situation endangers the housing in. dustry's ability to meet both short and long range housing demands. He added that this factor would further inflationary pressures that tight money is supposed to correct.

He said that some housing demands are already going unmet. ooUnlike the decline in housing starts in 1964 and 1965, caused by an oversupply, the present deteriorating level of residential construction is a direct result of the tightest money squee:e since the Twenties. If mortgage money were available, 1966 needs could easily support a rate of at least I.5 million units, instead of the I million rate that prevailed in the third quarter."

Weyco Buys For Eost Firms

Purchase of two Far East timber companies, with their transportation and marketing subsidiaries, has been announced by Weyerhaeuser Co.

George H. Weyerhaeuser, president, said they will assume operation of the Kennedy Bay Timber Company, Ltd., of Malaysia, and of the Basilan Lumber Corporation of the Philippines. The companies were operated as affiliates of Elliott Bay Mill Co., of Seattle, Wash.

The transactions were for a substantial but undisclosed amount of money.

Opinions on Grqding Soughf

The Federal Trade Commission has extended until March 13 the deadline on their hearings on grading and grade marking of softwood lumber. Deadline for filing comments is February 13.

The Commission asked for views on (I) procedures presently employed in grade marking softwood lumber; (2) whether, in fact, lumber misgrading or mismarking practices exist, and if so, (3) the extent of any grade marking failures; (4) whether grad' ing and grade marking practices, or grade marking failures, result in deception to the public and, if so, the extent of any deception, and (5) possible remedies for any deceptive practices disclosed. Comments should be filed with the Secretary, FTC, Sixth ancl Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D'C. 20580.

Redwood's Public Relqtions

A committee of experts representing California's major land' using organizations has been appointed to help the redwood lumber industry with its public recreation program.

President Harry A. Merlo of California Redwood Association has announced formation of a liaison committee representing eight agricultural, promotional and outdoor groups. They will meet once a year with CRA's recreation committee, operators of 22 Redwood Industry Recreation Areas in three North Coast counties.

The industry's program is in its second year and offers 365,000 acres of private forests for year-round public hunting, fishing, swimming and other outdoor activities. Nine redwood companies have joined to put up the RIRA welcome sign, Merlo said.

Remodeler Reports Profits

Construction Design, Inc., the largest home remodeling firm on the Pacific Coast, is 'oone of the few companies in the construction business still making a profit," Harold Hammerman, president, has told the company. annual meeting. He reported sales of $1,086,158 for the year ended June 30, compared to $1,305,425 for the previous year.

Franchising is the company's fastest area of growt\ Hammerman pointed out. This is done through a subsidiary organization, Allied Builders System, Inc., and he said ten new franchised units have been added during the past year, bringing the total to 13.

HE ASSOCIATION held their second r quarter ,board of directors meeting at the Kine's Ransom Motel in Sedona on November 29.

Two important items discussed at the meeting were solicitation of new members and establishing of additional standing committees within our associalion. The importance of the membership helping the secretary-manager solicit new members was discussed and it was generally {elt that the members should help in this respect, since in many instances besides the secretary-manager's call on a new member, a member's call might also influence a prospective member to join. A prospective new member's list was submitted to the board and board members were assigned names to call.

The second important item acted upon by the board was the setting up of addi-

tional committees. Yours truly presented the purpose of each committee and stressed the need for more education in our asrociation.

A report was presented on the recent Build,ing Supply lVezrs shopping survey, conducted in I00 lumber yards. This report impressed the directors with the need for education for the retail clerk.

The marketing committee, being a new committee, was discussed and it was felt that a study should be made on marketing, although the promotion of lumber is most important to our as:ociation, many other items are sold in a lumber yard to' day and should be stressed. Also, a study should be given to the matter of profits.

Bud Radditz has been named manager of Strable Lumber Company, veteran 60 year-old Oakland-$ased wholesale hardwood lumber, plYwood and building materials firm. Ralph Meyer continues in the position of sales' manager, the company disclosed.

A native of Portland, Radditz brings 20 years experience in the whole' sale plywood and lumber field to the venerable Strable firm. He is a sraduate of Stan' ford University and served in the Air Corps during World War II. In 1947 he joined Wanke Panel Company, in Portland and was general manager in 1965, when he resigned to join Higgins Lumber Co. in San Francisco.

Strable travels four outside salesmen from the Oregon border to Fresno, Calif. and east to Reno, Nev.

After a year's absence, long-time lumberman Max Barnette has returned to Independent Building Materials Co. as general manager of the Compton, Calif. redwood firm, a position he held 1961-65. The appointment was announced by Mrs. Hazel Anderson, IBMC president.

A thirty-year lumberman, Barnette began his career with E. K. W'ood Lumber Co. in 1935, and subsequentJy held sales positions with Rockport Redwood for eight years and Hollow Tree Redwood for nine vears.

W. W. "Tfilkie" Tfilkenson, longtime Los Angeles-area representative for several western forest products firms and a veteran of more than a half century in the lumber industry, died in November. He was 83'

A native of Manitoba, Canada, Wilkenson immigrated to the Pacific Northwest as a young: men and spent several years with lumber firms in Seattle and Portland.

In 1904, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked at Consolidated Lumber, later

moving back to the Portland area. In 1923, he returned to sout}rerrr California as a mill representative for a number of fims, including Dant & Russell, Inc., Oregon-Washington Plywood Co. and Nicolai Door Co.

Mr. Wilkenson is suryived by his widow, Lillian, of the family home in Redondo Beach.

He is also survived by his son David, who was associated vrith him in business until 1953 when he opened a retail yard, Lomita Lumber Co., Lomita, Calif., which he operates today.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Verna Gerber and three sons.

Dr. Walter Paul Ericks, 69, retired vice president and director of research of The Upson Company, manufactuxeer of laminated fibreboard products, died Dec. 7, following a brief illness. He was graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, with a deglee in chemical engineering and later from the University of Buffalo where he earned the degree of M.A. and Ph.D. in Chemistry.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs, Margaretha Smith Ericks, a daughtef Mrs. Wallace Wolff, and two grandsons.
