Weyerhaeuser has established the wood products industry's first regional advertising and merchandising network, according to J. C. Wallenstrom, vice president of wood products sales at Tacoma.

Advertising-merchandising managers are now in the company's six regional- offices throughout the country, W'allenstrom said.

Housing Shortoge Forecqst

The present lack of mortgage funds may result in a severe housing shortage, a leader of the U.S. ceramic tile industry has said.

Eugene F. Folks, president of the Tile Council of America, lnc., said the tight money situation endangers the housing in. dustry's ability to meet both short and long range housing demands. He added that this factor would further inflationary pressures that tight money is supposed to correct.

He said that some housing demands are already going unmet. ooUnlike the decline in housing starts in 1964 and 1965, caused by an oversupply, the present deteriorating level of residential construction is a direct result of the tightest money squee:e since the Twenties. If mortgage money were available, 1966 needs could easily support a rate of at least I.5 million units, instead of the I million rate that prevailed in the third quarter."

Weyco Buys For Eost Firms

Purchase of two Far East timber companies, with their transportation and marketing subsidiaries, has been announced by Weyerhaeuser Co.

George H. Weyerhaeuser, president, said they will assume operation of the Kennedy Bay Timber Company, Ltd., of Malaysia, and of the Basilan Lumber Corporation of the Philippines. The companies were operated as affiliates of Elliott Bay Mill Co., of Seattle, Wash.

The transactions were for a substantial but undisclosed amount of money.

Opinions on Grqding Soughf

The Federal Trade Commission has extended until March 13 the deadline on their hearings on grading and grade marking of softwood lumber. Deadline for filing comments is February 13.

The Commission asked for views on (I) procedures presently employed in grade marking softwood lumber; (2) whether, in fact, lumber misgrading or mismarking practices exist, and if so, (3) the extent of any grade marking failures; (4) whether grad' ing and grade marking practices, or grade marking failures, result in deception to the public and, if so, the extent of any deception, and (5) possible remedies for any deceptive practices disclosed. Comments should be filed with the Secretary, FTC, Sixth ancl Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D'C. 20580.

Redwood's Public Relqtions

A committee of experts representing California's major land' using organizations has been appointed to help the redwood lumber industry with its public recreation program.

President Harry A. Merlo of California Redwood Association has announced formation of a liaison committee representing eight agricultural, promotional and outdoor groups. They will meet once a year with CRA's recreation committee, operators of 22 Redwood Industry Recreation Areas in three North Coast counties.

The industry's program is in its second year and offers 365,000 acres of private forests for year-round public hunting, fishing, swimming and other outdoor activities. Nine redwood companies have joined to put up the RIRA welcome sign, Merlo said.

Remodeler Reports Profits

Construction Design, Inc., the largest home remodeling firm on the Pacific Coast, is 'oone of the few companies in the construction business still making a profit," Harold Hammerman, president, has told the company. annual meeting. He reported sales of $1,086,158 for the year ended June 30, compared to $1,305,425 for the previous year.

Franchising is the company's fastest area of growt\ Hammerman pointed out. This is done through a subsidiary organization, Allied Builders System, Inc., and he said ten new franchised units have been added during the past year, bringing the total to 13.

Denver Club Meets
