WHAT WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR ------------ BY PATRICK ADAMS LAST MONTH I WROTE about a decision in front of me that forced me to think deeply about risk, responsibility and what I ultimately believed was possible. I said there were nights when the weight of that decision felt heavier than others. I also promised that perhaps this month I would tell you what was waiting on the other side of mine. Well, here we are. Fifteen years ago, my wife and I left corporate America. I had worked for some of the largest organizations in the world. I learned what scale looks like, what process looks like, and what a machine capable of producing results looks like. I also learned that scale, process, and machines are not enough. At least not for me. We wanted something we couldn’t find inside those buildings: a company anchored in values, where the people mattered, the work mattered, and success could be measured by more than a spreadsheet. So we left. We risked everything on our first acquisition. Our savings. Our careers. Our reputations. Our family’s security. Everything we had built was suddenly riding on an idea we couldn’t prove would work. I wish I could tell you I was fearless. I wasn’t. There were plenty of moments when I wondered if I had made the biggest mistake of my life. But we believed in what we were building more than we feared what could happen if we failed. And it worked. Then we did it again. And again. For 15 years, one careful step at a time, through acquisitions, recessions, a pandemic, industry changes, successes, mistakes and more sleepless nights than I care to count, we built 526 Media Group into a company I am deeply proud of. And now, we have taken our biggest step yet. 526 Media Group has acquired ARCHITECT, Journal of Light Construction, and a portfolio of additional Hanley Wood titles from Zonda. That includes two actively published iconic brands— ARCHITECT and Journal of Light Construction—along with ProSales, Professional Deck Builder, Remodeling, Public Works, Residential Architect, Concrete Construction, Replacement Contractor, and Tools of the Trade, which we intend to bring back to market. It also includes ArchitectU, the P/A Awards, and the Residential Architecture and Design Awards. Combined with the brands we have already been entrusted to steward—The Merchant Magazine, Building Products Digest, Deck Specialist, Surface & Panel, Red Book Lumber Data, Lumberman Coffee, and the Brand Visibility Power Ranking—526 Media Group is now the largest B2B media plat-

form serving the entire North American building materials and construction industry. But the size isn’t what excites me most. It’s what we can now do with it. For the first time, our company can serve this industry across virtually its entire journey—from the architect sitting at a drafting table specifying a product, to the manufacturer making it, the distributor moving it, the dealer stocking it, and the builder, remodeler or contractor putting it to work on the jobsite. Print. Digital. Newsletters. Video. Events. Continuing education. Awards. Research. Market intelligence. Data. And soon, something I am particularly excited about: the Lumber Price Report within Red Book Lumber Data. For generations, this industry has relied on lumber pricing information to make some of its most important decisions. We now have the opportunity to bring a new independent pricing resource to the market, built around the same philosophy behind everything else we do: serve the industry first, provide information people can trust, and build tools that help them make better decisions. That matters to me. Because somewhere along the way, we stopped thinking of ourselves as simply a media company. Our job isn’t just to publish magazines or websites. Our job is to help this industry know more, see farther, make better decisions, connect more effectively, and ultimately become stronger. This acquisition dramatically expands our ability to do that. It also changes the responsibility we carry. Being the largest is not the accomplishment. Being worthy of it is. Leadership means people watch what you do. It means your mistakes become more consequential. It means you have an obligation to invest, innovate, listen, protect trust, and occasionally take a position when it would be easier to remain quiet. I welcome that responsibility. Because this gives us the opportunity to prove something we have believed since the day we left corporate America: you can humbly serve an industry you love and, at the same time, build a thriving organization filled with amazing, passionate people who care deeply about what they do. Those two things are not in tension. They are the same thing. There is another part of this story that means even more to me personally. My family has lived every chapter of this journey. They lived through the late nights, missed dinners, calls during vacations, deals that worked, and deals that building-products.com
didn’t. They saw the excitement, but they also carried the uncertainty. When an entrepreneur says, “I’m willing to risk everything,” the truth is that “everything” rarely belongs only to them. They may not always realize it, but your family takes that risk with you. My wife has stood beside me through all of it. My children have grown up alongside this company. Fifteen years ago, this was a dream their parents were chasing. Today, it is part of their story too. There is no accomplishment this company could ever achieve that would mean more to me than knowing we built it without sacrificing the values we set out to protect. And then there is our team. To the 526 Media Group team: look behind you today. Fifteen years of work is standing there. Every deadline met when nobody was watching. Every customer taken care of. Every flight, event, late night, difficult conversation, new idea, mistake corrected, and extra effort when it would have been easier to say, “good enough.” You built this. And to the talented teams joining us: these publications have histories and reputations that existed long before this transaction. Generations of talented people built and protected them. We understand what has been entrusted to us. Our commitment is not to change what made them great. It is to invest in what makes them great—and give them the resources to serve this industry for generations to come. We also did not get here alone. This industry has been extraordinarily generous with me. Countless fearless people have blessed me with their time, stories, friendship, and advice—people whose names shape how I lead every day. Emmerson. Newton. Robbins. Hancock. Price. Killgore. And countless others. They showed me what fearless
leadership actually looks like. Not reckless. Fearless. There is a difference, and it matters. They taught me that courage isn’t ignoring risk. It is understanding the risk, doing the work, knowing what you stand for, and then moving forward when fear is the only thing left telling you to stop. More importantly, they taught me that when people place their trust in you, you return that trust through action—with honesty, hard truths, real commitments, and your best effort every single day. So to this industry: thank you. Thank you for trusting us with your stories. Thank you for answering my calls, challenging my thinking, forgiving our mistakes, celebrating our successes, and allowing us to become part of your family. We intend to be worthy of what you have given us. Last month, I asked what we might choose if fear were removed from the equation. Today, I have my answer. We choose to move forward. We choose to invest. We choose to lead. And, most importantly, we choose to serve. Because becoming the largest was never the dream. Building something capable of making the greatest difference for the people and the industry we love—that was the dream. Fifteen years ago, my family and I stepped into the unknown with little more than faith, values, and the belief that something better was possible. Today I’m looking at what was waiting on the other side of that fear. And somehow, it feels like we’re just getting started. As always, I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve you and this great industry. MM PATRICK S. ADAMS, Publisher/President padams@526mediagroup.com

ACCURATE WOOD MOISTURE READINGS REQUIRE RIGHT METER AND METHOD ------------ BY JOHN ELLIOTT PROFESSIONAL MOISTURE testing depends on proper instrument selection, calibration, species correction, reading depth, temperature awareness, and consistent measurement practices. For professionals that rely on moisture measurements to make critical decisions, the accuracy of the results often depends not only on the quality of the instrument, but the type of meter and how it is used. In construction, flooring, restoration, woodworking, manufacturing and other applications, obtaining accurate measurement information is critical, particularly when the moisture content of the material will often determine its performance. If the device is not properly calibrated, the wrong correction factor is applied, or the measurement is taken at the wrong depth, it can lead to a myriad of consequences including call-backs, mold, dimensional instability, structural issues, rejected material, and lost production time.

According to John Bogart, managing director of Kett U.S., one manufacturer of a full range of moisture and organic composition analyzers, the various types of moisture meters such as pin-style meters, pinless meters, and near-infrared each have specific advantages depending on the type of material, surface condition, speed of measurement, and accuracy required. Understanding the various types of devices is the best way to ensure reliable, consistent results in the field and during production.
Understanding Moisture Meter Technologies A pin-style moisture meter measures the electrical resistance between two metal pins inserted within the wood. Because water increases the electrical conductivity of wood, drier wood exhibits higher resistance. Lower resistance readings correspond to higher moisture content, making resistance a useful indicator of the amount of moisture present in the material. building-products.com
Because moisture can vary significantly from the surface to the interior of the material, dense hardwoods often require hammer probes or electrode accessories to apply the controlled force required. The condition of the pins also matters. Pins should be inspected regularly and replaced, when necessary, as bent, broken, worn or corroded pins can produce unreliable readings. Since probes are used repeatedly on the jobsite, they should be treated as consumable components rather than permanent parts. (Continued on next page)
HOW DEALERS AND DISTRIBUTORS CAN BENEFIT FROM MOISTURE METERS
KETT HM-540 reads moisture content through surface contact alone, using two metal sensors and high-frequency capacitance to measure inside the wood without leaving a single pin hole. (Photo by Kett US)
Pin-style moisture meters are valuable in applications where measurements are needed at specific points or areas. Although pin-style moisture meters are very accurate, correct placement of the pins and proper settings based on the type of wood being measured is critical to obtain precise results. A pinless moisture meter uses electromagnetic radio frequency waves or capacitance sensors to measure moisture. These meters can be used to rapidly scan large surface areas and, unlike pin-style meters, do not leave holes or marks on the material. This approach makes them particularly suitable for evaluating floors, finished wood products, walls, and other surfaces. Near-infrared (NIR) moisture meters determine moisture content by measuring how specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by water molecules within a material. By analyzing the reflected light signature, these instruments can quickly calculate moisture levels without contacting or damaging the wood. As a result, NIR moisture meters provide fast, non-destructive measurements that closely correlate with laboratory testing, allowing operators to obtain reliable moisture readings in real time. Bogart is quick to add that many professionals benefit from using more than one type of technology. In restoration and inspection work, for example, a pinless meter might be used first to scan a broad area and identify potential problem spots. A pin-style meter could then be used to confirm moisture content at a specific depth.
Best Practices for Pin-Style Meters For pin-style meters, one of the most common sources of error is improper probe depth. Pins must be inserted into the manufacturer’s recommended depth to obtain an accurate reading. Otherwise, the meter will only show measure surface moisture and not the full picture. building-products.com
Although moisture meters are most commonly used by manufacturers (such as sawmill and dry kiln operators) and workmen (such as carpenters, inspectors and restoration contractors), the instruments can be surprisingly valuable to both retail and wholesale lumberyards because moisture content affects product quality, customer satisfaction, inventory management, and liability. Key uses include: • Verifying incoming shipments – Check whether lumber arrives at the specified moisture content before accepting it from mills or distributors. • Preventing customer complaints – Lumber that is too wet can shrink, warp, cup, twist, split, or cause finish failures after installation. Measuring moisture helps avoid selling material that may create problems. • Matching products to applications – Interior millwork, cabinetry, flooring, and furniture stock typically require lower moisture levels than framing lumber. A moisture meter helps ensure the right product is sold for the intended use. • Monitoring inventory storage conditions – Yard managers can periodically test lumber stored outdoors, under sheds, or in warehouses to identify moisture-related issues before they become costly. • Supporting kiln-dried claims – Retailers and wholesalers can verify that lumber marketed as kiln-dried or heat-treated remains within acceptable moisture ranges. • Reducing returns and warranty issues – Documented moisture readings can help resolve disputes when customers claim lumber defects resulted from improper drying. • Improving value-added operations – Lumberyards that remanufacture, mill, mold, or prefinish products need consistent moisture levels for optimal machining, gluing, and coating performance. • Training sales staff and customers – Demonstrating moisture content with a meter can help explain why certain products are better suited for decking, interior trim, cabinetry or furniture.

Grain direction is another important consideration. In wood, electrical resistance changes depending on whether the reading is taken with or across the grain. To improve accuracy, pins should generally be inserted parallel to the grain. Readings taken across the grain may produce artificially high results. Temperature can also affect readings from pin-style meters. These instruments are generally most accurate from 50°F to 90°F. When wood is cold, due to cold weather construction or unheated buildings, the moisture content may be underreported so temperature compensation is an important part of obtaining reliable results.
Best Practices for Pinless Meters Pinless meters offer speed and non-destructive testing but require proper technique. The reading depth must match the material being tested. Many pinless meters scan at common depths such as 1/4" or 3/4" below the surface. To obtain accurate readings, the surface of the material must be in continuous contact with the sensor pad. The sensor should rest flat on the material’s surface. Air gaps, uneven pressure, or irregular contact can all cause inaccuracies when measuring materials. Applying too much force to the sensor can damage it over time and using too little force may lead to inaccurate measurements. Pinless meters work well on flat, solid surfaces. Rough lumber, irregular materials, or uneven surfaces may not allow for consistent contact. In these conditions, using a pin style meter or near-infrared meter is a better option. Since moisture is not usually distributed evenly throughout a space, taking multiple readings is recommended. By establishing a grid pattern, a complete picture of the moisture can be created, particularly when assessing water damage, inspecting flooring, or when moisture has migrated to areas.
Calibration, Species Correction, and Temperature Compensation Even a quality moisture meter will produce unreliable results if it is not properly calibrated for the type of material being tested. Calibration requirements vary by instrument. Some meters include field checks that allow users to verify performance on site, while others are factory calibrated and designed to maintain accuracy over long periods. The proper approach depends on the meter. For example, Kett’s pin-style HB-300 Universal Moisture Meter can be calibrated on site using the customer’s own reference standards. This allows users to verify performance in the field and maintain confidence in the readings over time. The HM-540 Wood Moisture Tester, by contrast, is factory-calibrated and does not require a user-performed calibration procedure. The instrument includes built-in correction functions for specific gravity and temperature. Temperature correction is applied automatically, while the specific gravity setting should be selected correctly before use. Species corrections are particularly important when measuring moisture content in wood. Most wood moisture meters are factory-calibrated for Douglas fir. However,

WHEN CHECKING different panels, one option is to take comparative measurements. That works best when a dry sample is available to find a base value for dry. Then, compare all measured values with the base value. (Photo by Lignomat USA)
many applications involve other wood species with different electrical properties. Built-in species correction allows users to easily account for these differences. Documentation is also important in the measurement process. Calibration records help to avoid liability and enhance quality control. They provide a reference point when readings are inconsistent or unexpected. The reliability and traceability of the measurement process are just as important as the accuracy of the reading itself.
Protecting the Meter Between Uses Proper care and storage help preserve meter accuracy. Moisture meters should be protected from direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold, and moisture exposure when not in use. Pin-style meters should be stored with probes protected, while pinless meters should have sensor pads shielded from scratches and surface damage. A well-maintained instrument is more likely to deliver the repeatable needed to make confident decisions.
Choosing the Right Meter for the Job Bogard adds that the best moisture meter is not always the most advanced technology. It is determined by the material being tested, and if it is being used by someone who knows how it works. Selecting the right instrument and following correct process will lead to certain, accurate results, preventing costly errors and providing better decision-making on the jobsite or manufacturing floor. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR INVENTORY IN A VOLATILE MARKET ------------ BY DAVE ADAMS CONSIDERING THE DEGREE of price volatility and other factors that have impacted the lumber and building materials industry over the past six years, one could hardly blame suppliers and manufacturers for shifting from “just in time” inventory management to larger safety stocks. Lumberyards, millwork shops, pallet, truss and cabinet manufacturers alike were blindsided when Covid-19 disrupted wood production facilities and supply chains, making it both extremely difficult and expensive to acquire product. In time, as the pandemic abated and prices started to stabilize, many businesses in the lumber and building materials industry began replenishing (and in many cases, increasing) their on-hand supply to safeguard against future shortages. Today, LBM businesses contend with several market factors impacting their bottom line, including a new wave of supply constraints spurred by tariffs and a concerning number of mill closures. Maintaining a steady flow of materials is once again becoming increasingly challenging, and when those can be acquired at a competitive price, the decision to stockpile can prove a sound strategy. Except when your insurance company is not informed about how much your inventory is currently worth.
14 • the merchant magazine • O
ctober 2026
Even when your insurer specializes in serving LBM industry clients, only your business truly knows the dollar value assigned to those assets, and those values continue to fluctuate. This is becoming a surprisingly common problem, one driven by inflation, market volatility, changing inventory practices and the way commercial property insurance values are established. One thing, however, is certain: if you are not in regular communication with your insurer about the size and worth of your stock, you are likely underinsured for its full value.
Safeguarding Your Investment Those who have been monitoring the current values of lumber understand the price shift in materials has been driven by constrained supply rather than booming demand. Four years ago, the price of 2x4s had returned to normal levels after the massive spike during the pandemic. Now, despite the fact that home sales are down and new-home construction has waned, prices for new lumber have reached levels not seen in years. Higher import taxes and the housing downturn have spurred the closing of dozens of sawmills in Canada and the U.S. over the last several years, with more facing simbuilding-products.com
ilar fates. Canfor, which owns mills in the Southeastern U.S., northwestern Canada, and Sweden, ceased operations at its Alberta, Canada-based Fox Creek sawmill at the end of September. The result: increased values on existing stock. In July, the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite price reached $535 per thousand bd. ft., its highest reading since September 2022 and 23% more than a year ago. For LBM businesses, the fundamental problem is that “What did we pay for this inventory?” and “What would it cost us to replace this inventory today?” can be two very different numbers. Replacement cost isn’t necessarily the same thing as market value. A lumber dealer could have $2 million worth of inventory on its books. If that gets destroyed in a fire, the business may have to purchase replacement stock at today’s prices, and that current replacement cost could exceed $3 million—which can create a significant cash flow issue for your business. Consider also the fact that property values are often based on historical cost. Many LBM businesses update their insurance values by applying small annual inflation factors, typically between 3% and 5%. However, if replacement costs jump by 15% to 20% or more over a short period, those incremental adjustments quickly become insufficient. Products beyond traditional framing lumber, such as glulam beams, cross-laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber and custom millwork, can take months rather than weeks to replace. During that time, prices for those materials may accelerate further, and the final replacement cost can ultimately exceed the inventory value estimated when the policy was written. Your insured values should always reflect the current replacement cost, not the price at which you bought them. To house their stock, lumberyards could be utilizing larger warehouses and additional outdoor storage, often creating higher concentrations of valuable assets in single locations. It’s worth noting that some insurance policies contain sublimits or special conditions for property stored outdoors. A business may believe it has adequate limits overall but discover that its outdoor stock is subject to much lower limits. Your insurer can address these factors through seasonal reporting forms, peak-season endorsements or adjustable inventory coverage, but only if the exposure has been identified. When speaking with your insurer, it’s also prudent to review your business interruption coverage. If your stock is compromised, you may be unable to fulfill contractual obligations, lose customers to competitors, and suffer reduced revenues—all risks for which you can be insured with the right policy terms and limits.
much that number fluctuates throughout the year. With this in mind, when it comes to ensuring that your stock is insured for what it’s truly worth, don’t take the Ronco approach and just “set it and forget it.” At a minimum, quarterly check-ins with your insurer throughout the year are essential to keep them informed about your current assets and ensure that your business is protected against the full spectrum of exposures. With more than a century of supporting lumber and woodworking companies, we understand that LBM businesses are often family owned, and that the individual who communicates with your insurer has dozens of other important tasks to manage on any given day. Yet the regular dialogue that person maintains with your insurer could be the difference between continued success and a costly loss. MM
DAVE ADAMS Dave Adams is vice president, underwriting for Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company (PLM). He can be reached at dadams@plmins.com.
An Ongoing Dialogue Could Save Your Business For LBM businesses, the ongoing question should be, “What would it currently cost to replace my full stock if the yard burned to the ground?” Then, consider how

WHEN THE HAIL MAP CHANGES, SO SHOULD THE PRODUCT CONVERSATION ------------ HAMED KAYELLO EXTREME WEATHER has changed the conversation around building materials. For building products dealers, that conversation should start well before a contractor arrives at your counter with a materials list. Dealers now have a unique opportunity to help customers understand not simply what products are available, but why product selection matters when a building is located in an area deemed to be at increased risk from severe weather. Let’s talk about hail. Specifically, Very Severe Hail (VSH). FM Global recently updated its U.S. hail hazard map using the latest available hail data, expanding areas identified as VSH zones. Why does this matter to dealers supplying roofing products? Because structures that previously fell outside VSH areas may now be located within them. In other words: the map changed, and, in some markets, the roofing conversation should change with it.
What Is VSH? Very Severe Hail isn’t industry lingo for a bad thunderstorm; FM Global classifies hail exposure according to the potential severity of the hazard, with VSH representing its highest mapped hail category. VSH areas are associated with hail exceeding 2" in diameter at the defined applicable recurrence interval. The impact created by hail this size can do far more than create cosmetic damage. On a commercial low-slope roof, hail can damage the membrane and underlying insulation, potentially allowing water intrusion and ultimately shortening the service life of the roof system. The expanded map makes it increasingly important for dealers to know where their market—and those of their customers—falls. A contractor who has installed the same type of roof assembly for years may suddenly be working on projects where VSH-rated assemblies deserve consideration or are required by the building owner. Dealers who understand these changes can help their customers ask the right questions before materials are ordered.
It’s About the Assembly Perhaps the most important point about hail-resistant roofing is that performance belongs to the assembly, not necessarily an individual product. That distinction is important at the dealer level. A membrane, insulation or cover board shouldn’t be considered in isolation when VSH
16 • the merchant magazine • O
ctober 2026
performance is required. The complete roof assembly must meet the applicable requirements, making product choices all the more important. Cover boards can play a particularly important role: Installed between the insulation and roof membrane, a high-performance cover board adds a durable layer that can help protect both components from impact. For dealers, the larger lesson isn’t simply which product to sell: It’s knowing enough about the customer’s project to determine when a standard product conversation needs to become a performance conversation. Important questions: Where is the build? Is it in a VSH zone? What does the specification require? Is the assembly FM Global approved? What other severe weather risks should be considered? These questions, and the dealer knowledge behind them, add value at the counter. Fact is, resilient products can carry higher initial prices, which makes them tempting targets when a project is being value engineered. But let’s look at the facts. A roof damaged by severe hail can mean repairs, replacement materials, labor, water intrusion, and disruption for the occupants. Suddenly, the relatively small savings achieved during construction can look very different. This is where you come in: Dealers are in an excellent position to help shift the discussion from “what does this product cost?” to “what level of performance does this structure need?” Not every project needs the highestperforming product available. Use your new knowledge to ensure that product selection matches actual need.
Know Your Market Extreme weather is not going away, and neither is the pressure to make structures as resilient as possible. The newly expanded VSH map provides dealers with another reason to take customer knowledge to another level, to better understand building codes in their own market. METAL ROOFING is poised to take an even larger slice of the residential market. (Photo by Atlas)
SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR METAL ROOFING THE FORECAST for residential metal roofing in the U.S. is in growth mode and predicted to outpace the broader economy, according to a joint market study conducted by FMI Consulting and sponsored by the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) and the Metal Construction Association (MCA). That is especially true in the roof replacement category. Residential metal roofing is on track to capture an estimated 16% of the total U.S. roofing market within the next four years, with roof replacements predicted to drive 96% of that overall share, while new construction accounts for the remaining 4%. The study shows that residential metal roofing benefits such as longer lifespan, better durability, style and appearance, and strong warranties align with top homeowner priorities. Metal roofing systems including standing seam and metal trim categories that are tied to improved performance and efficiency are experiencing growing demand. In hurricane and high-wind regions, metal roofing products and pre-manufactured systems that carry all necessary certifications to meet or exceed codes and testing standards will be increasingly adopted. Other factors forecast to drive growth for the segment are overall housing trends. Research shows more people are staying in their homes for longer. That’s motivating them to select more durable/high value products that don’t need to be replaced as often, like quality metal roofing. Standing seam is the clear value leader in residential metal roofing and is expected to account for the majority of shipment value through 2030. Metal shingles represent the next largest opportunity, while through-fastened products continue to hold a meaningful position

and IMPs (Insulated Metal Panels) remain a smaller but fast growing niche. For all the good news in the residential metal roofing category, there are some areas for improvement. Forecasts show that consumer awareness continues to be essential, and efforts by trade groups such as the Metal Roofing Alliance are fundamental to driving familiarity and broad acceptance. Those efforts are proving to be key. Like other high quality, longer-lasting products, while cost remains a barrier to entry for some homeowners when it comes to choosing metal roofing, the study shows that continued and sustained education is nearly as important. According to forecasts, leading roof selection factors align well with metal roofing’s benefits, especially lifespan, durability, appearance and strong warranties. The opportunity for the industry is to make these benefits easier for owners, architects and contractors to compare against lower-cost roofing options during early material selection. That includes comprehensive information, tools and resources that MRA makes available at metalroofing.com. “As metal gains market share against traditional industry-standard roofing material, our goal is to be the number one resource for homeowners to understand the tremendous value proposition of metal roofing and how it compares to other materials they may be more familiar with but deliver far fewer benefits,” said Renee Ramey, MRA executive director. “Clearly, with forecasts looking strong, the collective efforts of our manufacturer and contractor members are needed now more than ever to drive demand for the entire segment of residential metal roofing.” MM building-products.com

CATCH MORE BEES WITH HONEY ------------ BY JAMES OLSEN MOST SELLERS underestimate the importance of human warmth when working with customers. The number one factor in sales success is our ability to relate to our fellow man. Many sellers work hard making lots of calls, learning their markets and products but spend little time figuring out how to get close to their customers, as humans. I was working with a sales group on how to sell different personality types. One of the salesmen asked, “Why do we have to study all this psychology stuff? I just want to sell wood.” I said, “The problem is we aren’t selling wood, we’re selling humans.” I am shocked how few sellers ask their customer how they are. Many tell me they don’t want to seem insincere or overly “saleszy.” These prejudices are in our minds. People want us to be polite to them. They want us to try to be nice to them. The fear of being perceived as too pushy or insincere makes many sellers bend backwards to seem “businesslike,” but instead end up coming across as standoffish and cold, both of which are extremely easy to say no to. Warmth and friendliness are easy to say yes to and difficult to say no to. Here are some things we can do to build rapport with our clients—quickly: Use their name and ask them how they are. It seems so obvious but many (most) sellers don’t use their customers’ names or greet them enough. Customer: “Hello, this is John.” Us: “Good morning, John, my name is James from ABC Distribution. How are you today? Customer: “Fine, how can I help you?” Us: “John, I wanted to talk to you today about…” (Use the customer’s name on the restart; don’t go into what we are going to say without first addressing them by name.) Show some excitement and happiness in our tone when the customer calls in or when we get them on the phone on our call in. We act as if we are glad to hear their voice: Customer: “Hello, James, this is John.” Us: “Hey, John, how are you doing?” (We say this with mild excitement, as if we were hearing from an old friend.) Another good place to use our customer’s name is at closing: Us: “You know you need this, Susan, that’s why you gave me the inquiry. Let’s put this one together.
tomer is done. We are going to think of an interested and interesting follow-up question about what the customer is talking about. Us: “So, Pete. How was the trip to the mountains?” Pete: “Great. Played some cards with the family and did some fishing.” Us: “Did you catch any?” Pete: “Sure did.” Us: “Tell me about the one that fought the most.” The opposite of the interested Follow-Up Question is Hijacking the Conversation, confused by many as “conversation” but is simply a way to put the light back on the seller—wrong place. Us: “So, Pete. How was the trip to the mountains?” Pete: “Great. Played some cards with the family and did some fishing.” Hijacker: “Man, I love to fish. The last time we went fishing I caught ……” Pete: “Great.”

Smile, Laugh and Relax Laugh with your customers. When they laugh, laugh with them. Customers tell corny jokes. Laugh at them. If you have a sense of humor, use it. Caution: Humor is a powerful tool; as with all power tools, use with care. A mistake made by many sellers is losing the charm when they get to the business part of the call. They are congenial and friendly in the greeting and small talk, but they clam up and lose their humanity when they get to closing. Because emotions are contagious the customer gets uptight also, which leads to more no’s than yes’s. Master Sellers stay relaxed and smiling all the way through the sales process. Life is a mirror. When we smile and relax while we speak, our customers will do the same; they can’t help it. Emotions are contagious. MM

GROWING YOUR OWN TALENT JUST GOT EASIER THROUGH APPRENTICESHIPS ------------ BY PAIGE McALLISTER YOU HAVE open positions you cannot fill and a supervisor asking why this is taking so long. For years the only answer has been to compete harder for the same shrinking pool of experienced candidates: pay more, move faster, offer a bigger signing bonus or better benefits. While that may still work, there may be another strategy you can employ to grow your own talent through apprenticeships. Two changes, one from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and one from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), were announced within months of each other which, applied together, cut the cost and the paperwork required to develop your own talent. If you once looked at apprenticeship and decided it was too complicated, it is worth another look.
What Changed at the Department of Labor The DOL defines the Registered Apprenticeship Program as an “industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforces and individuals can obtain paid work experience.” There are a variety of industries included in this program such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), construction, financial services, healthcare, hospitality, technology, and transportation. A “registered apprenticeship” differs from an unofficial apprenticeship as it is a formal training program, approved by the Department of Labor, in which someone learns a skilled job by actually doing it. The apprentice is a paid employee from day one, learns on the job under an experienced worker, and takes related classroom instruction alongside the work. When they finish, they hold a credential recognized nationwide. The employer, association, or school that runs the program is called the sponsor. Recently the DOL’s Office of Apprenticeship issued four guidance documents with the goal of supporting one million active apprentices nationwide. The theme running through all of the guidance documents is consistent: there are now fewer federal constraints on how businesses design their apprenticeship programs with more transparency about how they perform.

ctober 2026
• Employers can now build the program around their actual work: Circular 2026-01 makes it far easier to build an approved apprenticeship around demonstrated skill instead, so an apprentice who can already do the work moves forward rather than waiting out a calendar year. It removed the rules that forced a program to run at least a year, limited how much credit an employer could give someone for experience they already had, and set a minimum number of hours before anyone could earn a completion certificate. • A faster answer from DOL: Bulletin 2026-35 commits that the DOL will approve or deny a program within 30 days of submission and will create a public dashboard tracking how long approvals actually take. • Published results with one clear decisions-maker in each state: Circular 2026-03 standardizes how programs count the percentage of apprentices who finish and commits the DOL to publish that data by industry and state so employers can see how a program performs before joining it. There is a trade-off for this new flexibility: When federal minimums disappear, the documentation burden shifts to the employer sponsor. The sponsoring employer now needs defined on-the-job learning hours, written competencies and evaluation methods, and written policies on advanced standing, performance reviews, and safety training applied the same way to every apprentice.
What Workforce Pell Grants Do The second change came from the Department of Education. Authorized by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, the Workforce Pell Grant final rule took effect July 20, with early implementation allowed as of July 1. For the first time, federal Pell Grant money can pay for short-term career training rather than only degree programs. To qualify, a program must run at least eight but fewer than 15 weeks, comprise 150 to 599 clock hours, and lead to a recognized credential that is stackable and portable. Approval runs through two offices: the governor (in consultation with the state workforce board) certifies that building-products.com
the program serves high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand occupations in their state. The U.S. Secretary of Education has final approval. Programs report completion and placement rates annually and, beginning in 2030-31, must prove they’re worth the investment when comparing their graduates’ typical income vs. 150% the federal poverty income guideline for a single person. The difference is considered the amount the training demonstrably added to the individual’s income; tuition and fees cannot exceed that number. A program that costs students more than it measurably improves their earnings loses its eligibility, and once it does, it has to wait two years before it can reapply. Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree are eligible for additional training grants, a significant departure from traditional Pell rules, so a degreed employee who wants to move into a skilled trade now has a pathway.
Where the Two Programs Connect This is the part that matters most for employers. The Workforce Pell rule covers the classroom side of a Registered Apprenticeship, treating its related technical instruction more favorably than other training as it automatically satisfies the “high-skill, high-wage, in-demand” test. With that, aid-eligible schools can allow a partner employer to provide up to 49% of the training for credit rather than the standard 25%. In practical terms, federal aid can now cover the classroom tuition apprentices have historically paid out of pocket. It does not cover wages, on-the-job training costs, or any other employer investment. Employers implementing this program must be careful how they describe it to employees. A four-year apprenticeship includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job learning. However, since a Workforce Pell grant only covers programs of 600 hours or less, it will only fund parts of an apprenticeship (e.g., a first-year instruction package, a safety or specialty credential, or a pre-apprenticeship) but not the whole thing. The government has not yet stated how a long apprenticeship should be divided into fundable pieces or how hours get counted, so employers should ask the school or training center they hope to partner with how their program is set up before telling an employee they qualify.
What It Means for an Employer’s Hiring Program • Look for an existing program before building one: Industry associations, a state apprenticeship agency, or a local community college may already sponsor a registered program an employer can join. That is far less work than starting their own.
• If applicable, revisit the standards of your current apprenticeship program: The new flexibility may let you compress the time to journeyworker (those who complete the apprenticeship program), but only if the competency documentation is solid enough to support it. • Ask any training provider whether they are pursuing Workforce Pell approval and, if so, for which programs. Then consider creating or revisiting a tuition assistance policy to help employees with the rest of the costs. If the Pell covers part of the tuition, employer benefit dollars will stretch further or can be redirected toward completion bonuses that keep apprentices from leaving mid-program. • Be honest about the cost: An apprenticeship does not eliminate or reduce spending. Instead, it moves it from recruiting fees to wages, supervision time, and mentoring.
The Bottom Line The federal government has made it cheaper and simpler for employers to grow their own skilled workers. Most small and mid-sized employers have not noticed yet, but the advantage will go to whomever moves on this new pathway first. A pipeline is only as good as the people put into it and the supervisors asked to develop them. Employers should build the program, take the funding, and keep hiring with the same care they always have. The apprenticeships and grants are not alternatives to a current recruiting strategy but rather apply the same strategy with different timelines—pipeline strategies that pay off in 12, 24 or 48 months. They do not fill the supervisor or fully-trained position that opened last week. Additionally, they are ineffective and costly if those you put into the program were the wrong hires from the start. The front end still matters. Selecting candidates who will actually finish is a hiring not a training problem, as is filling the experienced roles that supervise and mentor them. A program without capable apprentices and journeyworkers to teach exists only on paper. MM

PLIB’S NEWEST online grader training offering, Light Framing, covers lumber commonly used for sills and plates and to build non-load bearing partitions. Course content derives from in-mill training PLIB grading supervisors have provided for decades.
PLIB LAUNCHES ONLINE COURSE FOR GRADING LIGHT FRAMING
Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau (PLIB) has launched Light Framing, its third online grader training course and the second of a planned three-course syllabus designed to provide comprehensive grader training based on the National Grading Rule for Dimension Lumber (NGR). Like its other online offerings, Light Framing is based on the in-mill grader training PLIB has offered for decades. To replicate the live training experience, PLIB’s online courses offer a wide range of learning activities, making extensive use of hundreds of close-up images, video captured from in-mill scanners and instructional videos led by PLIB’s experienced grading supervisors. The ultra-realistic learning environment helps users recognize and accurately measure and assess every grade-defining characteristic. PLIB’s Light Framing course opens with an introduction to Light Framing grades, followed by lessons covering each of the primary characteristics used to determine grade—checks, splits, shake, pockets and streaks, skip, wane, warp, slope of grain, knots and holes, and unsound wood. The course then covers manufacturing standards and additional characteristics addressed only in the Interpretations; guidelines intended to clarify how standard grading rules are to be applied when graders encounter lumber with unusual characteristics. Each lesson provides detailed instruction on the applicable grading rules, measurement methods and allowable limits. Knowledge checks at the end of each lesson reinforce the information covered, solidifying the learners’ understanding of the content. 3D imagery and videos shot at PLIB member mill grading stations provide learners with opportunities to apply the grading rules in realistic, practical in-mill situations. Light Framing is the third grader training course offered at education.plib.org, PLIB’s online Learning Management System. Foundations of Lumber Grading, a prerequisite to all the NGR Grade courses PLIB offers, was released earlier this year and STUDS was launched last month. A fourth course, Structural Light Framing and Joists & Planks, will be launched in the coming weeks, completing the NGR curriculum.

Foundations provides knowledge required for successful completion of ensuing courses, including in-depth training on all the features and characteristics that impact lumber grades. “The Foundations course gives learners a clear understanding of how and why lumber grading came to be, and it teaches them how to identify, measure and evaluate the various characteristics that impact lumber grades—crucial background for anyone training to become an in-mill lumber grader,” explained Erik Wilson, PLIB’s executive vice president. “With our extensive use of photos and videos of real-life lumber and grading, our courses provide the most realistic learning environment possible in an online setting,” Wilson continued. “Those who successfully complete them are well on their way to becoming expert graders.” PLIB’s online training courses accommodate a wide range of learning styles with a variety of different content delivery methods, including instructional videos featuring PLIB grading supervisors, hundreds of photos depicting characteristics found in real lumber, and interactive three-dimensional models derived from actual in-mill scanner data. The NGR grading curriculum will culminate later this year with the launch of the fourth and final course, Structural Light Framing and Joists & Planks. Once complete, PLIB’s NGR grading courses will be available individually or in bundles. Registration fees include personal copies of necessary course materials such as PLIB’s Grading Rule Book(s) and PLIB’s new STUD/Light Framing Dry Erase Training Wrap. NEIMAN RACES TO FIND LAST-MINUTE BUYER FOR COLORADO SAWMILL
Montrose Forest Products, Montrose, Co., issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices to approximately 90 employees as efforts continue to find a buyer for the sawmill and keep operations running. According to reports, company officials indicated that a transaction would ideally be completed by early November to avoid an interruption in operations and preserve jobs at the facility. The WARN Act generally requires employers to provide 60 days’ advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff. The notices do not necessarily mean the mill will close, but rather provide workers with advance warning while discussions with potential buyers continue. Montrose Forest Products is one of Colorado’s largest sawmills and a significant employer in western Colorado. The operation traces its current history to 2012, when lumber producer Interfor acquired the former Intermountain Resources sawmill in Montrose and restarted the facility. In 2025, South Dakota-based Neiman acquired the operation. Neiman Enterprises is a fourth-generation forest products company with divisions that include Montrose Forest Products, Spearfish Forest Products in South Dakota, Devils Tower Forest Products in Wyoming, and Gilchrist Forest Products in Oregon.

3 WAYS TO UNLOCK YOUR COMPANY’S HIDDEN INNOVATION POTENTIAL ------------ REBECCA OKAMOTO STRESS. UNCERTAINTY. Unrealistic deadlines. Unreasonable goals. You know what they are: the enemy of teamwork, creativity and innovation. They’re also inescapable. Which leaves today’s leaders in an unenviable position: how to build the capability to achieve business goals while dealing with massive uncertainty. But what if you could grow skills, build resilient teams, and accelerate innovative thinking even though there’s no time, few resources, and high instability? You can. Because every organization has an untapped innovation engine hiding in plain sight: the Lost Einstein. Your Lost Einstein is a super-smart person with a game-changing concept that no one understands. They struggle to explain the strategic value, and because of that, their ideas and potential go unheard or unrecognized. Or commercialized. You know who they are. The brainy R&D researcher with the meticulous spreadsheets. The super-sharp analyst whose English skills make them hard to understand. The operations leader who didn’t learn to read the room and got a few eye rolls at the last manager update. Or even the introvert you’ve been ignoring because they never speak up. Does it really matter? Consider: over the past 10 years, the annual Gallup engagement survey has reported an average of 67% of organizations are disengaged. Imagine if 67% of the players on a soccer team were disengaged, that would mean that, out of 11 players, seven or eight of them aren’t playing to win. In fact, one or two of them would be actively disengaged—as in fighting with their teammates, sabotaging the play, or even helping the competition. Yet firms routinely battle for market share or scrape for a few margin points, while over half of their workforce is disinterested or even undermining company goals. What if you could tap into that missing capability? And what if the solution didn’t sacrifice short-term results, require a major culture reset, or take years of investment?
The Hidden Innovation Engine Hiding in Plain Sight You know what makes your Lost Einsteins so valuable? They’re already on your team and want to be more engaged. They have great ideas that are going unrecognized. You just need a better way to maximize their capability. Here are three ways you can tap into their potential

1. Invest in executive clarity skills for presenting to senior stakeholders. Your smart managers are excellent at problem-solving, running projects, and directing dayto-day activities. This is perfect for interacting with their functional colleagues. But not for communicating with time-pressed leadership. Without executive clarity skills, some of your best leaders are getting tuned out, uninvited to meetings, or hearing, “no” to groundbreaking ideas. Don’t just hand them a presentation template. Give them skills to explain the strategic and commercial value of breakthrough ideas; identify, define and pitch the big picture; and pinpoint the strategic barriers to “yes” and shift mindsets. Clarity skills aren’t about speaking better. They’re about being better understood. 2. Improve executive presence. First impressions really matter. Research shows first impressions can be made in the blink of an eye, by the pitch of your voice, even by how you say the word, “Hello.” Don’t just think about what your leaders are saying. Help them with how they are communicating. Offer training on: concise, engaging introductions to create a powerful first impression; executive intonation so they sound more confident; and introducing topics and avoiding hedge words that can damage credibility. 3. Enable introverts and quiet leaders to speak up more. Speaking up is a critical skill to get breakthrough concepts recognized for their strategic importance. That’s because the more outside the box the idea is, the more times speakers will hear, “no,” get interrupted, or provoke a “here’s why you’re wrong” response. Here’s the thing about Lost Einsteins—they already struggle with speaking up. Drowning out their ideas makes it worse. Instead, try rotating meeting leadership to equalize the opportunity to build and demonstrate skills like priority setting and conflict management; actively moderating meetings to avoid or reduce interruptions; and adopting an amplification strategy: when a quiet team member, like an introvert or a new or junior member, makes a point, another team member repeats it and credits them. Lost Einsteins are your unrealized innovation engine. MM – Rebecca Okamoto is a clarity consultant and the founder of Evoke Strategy Group (www.20words.com). building-products.com

The moves are part of a broader effort to eliminate duplicate infrastructure, improve productivity and reduce logistics costs—work that has already eliminated well over $250 million in future lease obligations, bolstering the company’s ability to return value to its members. “We are making deliberate decisions about where and how we operate so our combined network can serve members more effectively,” said Tim Miller, chief logistics officer of Do it Best Group. “Since the acquisition, we have optimized routes and eliminated several million delivery miles. Consolidating operations into fewer facilities will further reduce duplication and allow us to focus our resources where they can deliver the greatest value for our members.”
G-P SHUTTERING TACOMA GYPSUM PLANT
Georgia-Pacific plans to permanently close its gypsum board/drywall plant in Tacoma, Wa. G-P said the decision came as a result of several challenging market conditions that have affected the gypsum industry. Since 2022, there has been an ongoing decline in consumer repair and remodel
activity, which is the primary driver of demand for our products, especially gypsum. The repair and remodel activity is primarily driven by the sales of existing homes or home turnover, which is currently at a 30-year low and—unfortunately—not showing signs of improvement. Looking forward, G-P believes it can continue to satisfy its customers’ demand from production at its remaining facilities. All 125 full-time employees at the plant will be impacted by this closure. Normal operations will cease approximately Oct. 23, and the site will be permanently closed toward the end of the year. Georgia-Pacific will ensure that all employees will be paid all earned wages and agreed-upon benefits at the time of their discharge.
CHASE ACE FILES CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY

Based in Greenbrae, Ca., D&D listed assets and liabilities of $1 million to $10 million in its June 4 filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. Its largest creditors include several banks, landlords, a healthcare provider, and the IRS. NAWLA 2026 TRADERS MARKET
At 30, NAWLA Traders Market opens doors wider than ever FOR THREE DECADES, the NAWLA Traders Market has occupied a unique place within the lumber and building materials industry. It has long been known as the event where business relationships are strengthened, partnerships are launched, and faceto-face conversations often lead to opportunities that continue paying dividends long after attendees return home. Now, as the event celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, Traders Market is entering a new chapter— one that could make this year’s gathering one of the most significant in its history. For the first time, attendance has been expanded beyond NAWLA membership, opening the doors to qualified professionals from across the entire lumber and building materials distribution channel. The result is an event that promises broader participation, a wider range of business perspectives, and more opportunities for meaningful connections than ever before. Scheduled for Nov. 4-6 in Anaheim, Ca., the 2026 NAWLA Traders Market is positioned to become a gathering point not only for longtime attendees but also for distributors, dealers, manufacturers, wholesalers, service providers, logistics professionals, technology suppliers, and other industry stakeholders who may not have previously had the opportunity to participate.

A Significant Evolution The lumber and building materials industry has undergone enormous change over the past three decades. Consolidation, technological advancements, evolving customer expectations, changing supply chains, labor challenges, sustainability initiatives, and market fluctuations have reshaped how companies conduct business and interact with one another. Recognizing those changes, NAWLA has chosen to broaden access to Traders Market while preserving the relationship-driven environment that has made the event successful for 30 years. Rather than changing the fundamental purpose of Traders Market, the expanded attendance model reflects an effort to bring together a larger cross-section of the industry under one roof. The concept is straightforward: stronger industry connections create stronger businesses. By welcoming both members and non-members, Traders Market can facilitate new conversations among companies that may never have crossed paths otherwise. Those introductions may lead to new supplier relationships, new customer opportunities, new service partnerships, or simply a better understanding of how different segments of the channel are adapting to today’s marketplace. building-products.com

In an era dominated by email, video meetings, text messaging, and digital communication platforms, one might assume the value of in-person industry gatherings would diminish. The opposite appears to be true. Many industry professionals continue to view face-to-face meetings as irreplaceable when it comes to developing trust, evaluating potential partners, discussing business opportunities, and strengthening existing relationships. A video call can facilitate communication. An email can convey information. But personal interaction remains one of the most effective ways to build confidence and establish long-term business partnerships. That reality helps explain why Traders Market has maintained its relevance for three decades. Attendees consistently cite the event’s ability to bring decision-makers together in a business-focused environment where conversations are productive, schedules are concentrated, and opportunities are abundant. For companies seeking to expand their reach, identify new suppliers, diversify their customer base, or simply maintain visibility within the industry, the value of gathering in person remains substantial.
is expected to introduce additional perspectives from throughout the distribution channel. That means more opportunities to learn how other businesses are addressing common challenges. It means more chances to hear how peers are managing inventory, transportation, labor, technology implementation, product diversification, customer service expectations, and changing market conditions. It means greater exposure to new business models, fresh ideas, and innovative approaches that may not have previously been represented. For attendees, this diversity can create significant value. Conversations that begin casually often evolve into strategic discussions about sourcing, logistics, marketing, operations and growth opportunities. In many cases, the most valuable takeaway from an industry event is not found in a presentation or product demonstration but in a conversation with another professional who has successfully navigated a similar challenge.

Building Momentum for 2027
throughout the year, companies can meet with multiple partners, suppliers, customers, and prospects over the course of a few days. Discussions that might otherwise take months to coordinate can occur in a single location. Whether the objective is strengthening an existing relationship, exploring a new product category, identifying a strategic supplier, or discussing future business plans, Traders Market provides direct access to the people responsible for making decisions.
The timing of Traders Market has long made it particularly valuable. Held in early November, the event provides companies with an opportunity to evaluate the current year’s performance while simultaneously preparing for the year ahead. For many attendees, the show serves as an unofficial launch point for 2027 planning. Companies can review market conditions, discuss forecasts, explore new product offerings, evaluate emerging
trends, and begin developing strategies for the coming year. By the time attendees leave Anaheim, many will have laid the groundwork for business initiatives that extend well into the following year.

The Numbers Behind the Opportunity
An Invitation to the Entire Channel
The scale of Traders Market illustrates why it continues to command attention throughout the industry. More than 1,200 buyers, suppliers, and decision-makers are expected to participate. More than 200 exhibitors will showcase products, services, capabilities, and solutions relevant to the lumber and building materials marketplace. Attendees will also benefit from approximately nine hours of dedicated networking time on the tradeshow floor, providing ample opportunity for strategic conversations and business development. For professionals seeking efficiency, few events offer the ability to engage such a large concentration of industry participants within such a focused timeframe.
For years, industry professionals have viewed Traders Market as a cornerstone event for building relationships and conducting business. This year, the invitation extends farther than ever before. Whether you are a distributor seeking new suppliers, a manufacturer looking to expand market reach, a dealer interested in discovering new products, a service provider hoping to connect with industry leaders, or a business owner looking for growth opportunities, the 2026 NAWLA Traders Market offers a chance to engage directly with the people shaping the future of the industry. NAWLA 2026 TRADERS MARKET
Now is the time to strategically reset distribution operations ------------ CHRIS FISHER AND KEVIN SARB BUILDING PRODUCTS distribution is undergoing a fundamental transformation. For mid-market distributors, this shift represents more than a cyclical disruption. It is a structural reset in competitive dynamics. Well-capitalized national players are rapidly consolidating market positions, strengthening relationships with contractors and residential builders, and elevating performance expectations across the channel. Distributors serving residential builders, multifamily contractors, and lumberyards must act decisively to enhance operations or risk ceding ground in an accelerating consolidation environment. Major transactions since March 2024 have reshaped the landscape. QXO acquired Beacon Roofing Supply and Kodiak Building Partners. The company also acquired TopBuild for $17 billion, the largest distributor and installer of insulation in North America. Concurrently, Home Depot has expanded its professional distribution footprint through the acquisitions of SRS Distribution and GMS. These moves extend consolidation across roofing, insulation, general building materials, and adjacent categories. Beyond scale, these consolidators are constructing integrated platforms that capture greater value by controlling key elements of the contractor and builder journey: product specification, jobsite delivery, speed of fulfillment, and management of project spend through unified accounts. This strategic ambition surpasses traditional dealer consolidation and carries significant implications for independent and regional distributors.
Raising the Performance Bar These emerging leaders are establishing new industry benchmarks for operational excellence. QXO’s integration of Beacon Roofing provides a clear example. Following the acquisition, the company swiftly implemented leadership changes and introduced six core KPIs: inventory turns, EBITDA per location, order-to-cash velocity, on-time delivery, digital penetration, and cost-to-serve. These metrics target the fundamental levers of distribution success:

efficient inventory deployment, location-level profitability, cash flow efficiency, service reliability, digital adoption, and cost discipline. Many mid-market distributors lag in these critical areas, creating vulnerabilities in a more demanding competitive environment.
Key Operational Gaps Inventory management stands out as a primary challenge. Numerous distributors maintain excessive safety stock due to limited real-time visibility into demand patterns and replenishment cycles. Forecasting remains rudimentary, SKU rationalization inconsistent, and assortment planning often disconnected from evolving market requirements. This results in excess capital tied up in slow-moving inventory alongside stockouts of high-demand products. Logistics and fulfillment represent another pressure point. Builders and contractors operate under tight schedules where delays carry substantial costs. Yet many distributors struggle with inadequate delivery visibility, inconsistent on-time performance, and outdated routing systems. Larger competitors use advanced logistics to enhance reliability and expand share of wallet. Warehouse operations also require attention. Manual processes prevalent in many mid-market facilities limit throughput, elevate error rates, and complicate labor management. Disconnected tracking, training, and performance systems hinder systematic productivity gains. Data infrastructure and technology further constrain performance. Fragmented ERP systems, siloed pricing tools, and limited analytics impede real-time business visibility. This restricts informed purchasing, margin management, contract enforcement, and customer profitability analysis, all critical capabilities in a consolidating market. Commercial strategy presents additional opportunities for improvement. Many distributors rely on undifferentiated, broad-line offerings without sophisticated customer building-products.com
segmentation, tailored service models, or value-based pricing aligned with project types and account potential. Bundling opportunities that could simplify ordering and increase average order value are frequently underutilized.
Practical Priorities for Mid-Market Distributors Mid-market players retain a window to respond, provided initiatives are focused and executable. Four priorities emerge:
1. Strengthen Operational Foundations. Prioritize enhanced inventory discipline through improved forecasting, demand visibility, and SKU optimization. Bolster delivery reliability and implement cleaner data practices. These improvements directly enhance customer trust, working capital efficiency, and profitability. 2. Differentiate through Project-Level Segmentation. Recognize that projects vary significantly in timing, urgency, product mix, and service needs. By aligning inventory, pricing, and service models to distinct project types, distributors can improve both margins and customer satisfaction. 3. Deepen Supplier Collaboration. Stronger partnerships with key manufacturers can yield better forecasting accuracy, reduced supply disruptions, and more reliable fulfillment. Joint performance scorecards and shared objectives support mutual gains in on-time delivery and inventory efficiency. 4. Drive Commercial Reinvention. Implement refined customer segmentation, dynamic pricing strategies, targeted product bundles, and disciplined account management.
building-products.com
Use digital tools for streamlined ordering, account transparency, and sales-operations coordination. While matching the technology budgets of national players may not be feasible, reducing customer friction and enhancing internal decision-making are essential. Distributors should also maintain acquisition readiness. Streamlined systems, scalable processes, and operational discipline expand strategic flexibility: whether competing independently, pursuing growth through acquisition, attracting investment, or optimizing valuation. QXO, Home Depot, and similar consolidators are not merely expanding through deals; they are redefining competitive standards in building products distribution. Their emphasis on scale, technology, and contractor-centric platforms sets a new benchmark for the industry. For mid-market distributors and lumberyards, this moment demands urgency and clarity. Success belongs to those who close performance gaps in inventory, fulfillment, data capabilities, and commercial execution while preserving the advantages of local relationships and service excellence. Companies that act decisively will strengthen their competitive position, sustain growth, and retain influence over their future. Those that hesitate may find their options increasingly dictated by others. WEST BAY FOREST PRODUCTS
West Bay’s story is rooted in western red cedar. Starting in 1988, we’ve grown from a single manufacturing operation to become a multifaceted cedar supplier, and now own and operate two sawmills and two remanufacturing plants across the Pacific Northwest. We’ve also continued to invest in our team, adding three new sales members over the past two years, including Tyler Backs, our latest addition. With the add-on of Backs, who works in both sales and fiber procurement, along with our facilities, West Bay is well positioned to control our fiber supply from log to finished lumber. One of West Bay’s specialties is appearance grade cedar timbers. These timbers are highly sought after by distributors and builders for their exceptional beauty and versatility, and to support that, we know that the manufacturing process doesn’t stop at the saw. Once cut, all timbers are end-waxed and packaged carefully to minimize iron-stain or other damage that could occur in transit or during manufacturing. In fact, extra protection is key across all our high-end products, including a wide range of siding options such as bevel and T&G. To ensure these products are delivered in pristine condition, West Bay siding comes sub-bundled, end-capped, and paper-wrapped. We care about the little details because we know they matter. We want our customers to expect the best from us—unmatched consistency, timely delivery, and flexibility for their programs—and we’re ready to give it to them. WESTERN FOREST PRODUCTS
Introducing Thermally Modified Hem-Fir Western Forest Products is proud to announce its exciting new product line, Thermally Modified Hem-Fir. Featuring a rich, deep brown color that closely resembles western red cedar and some tropical hardwoods, this product is set to redefine Coastal B.C. forestry. Thermally modified hem-fir is more than just another building material; it’s part of a responsible movement toward smarter and sustainable design. By using steam and heat, we transform a responsibly harvested species into an elegant material that meets the demands of both aesthetics and responsible sourcing. Thermally modified hem-fir is not only aesthetically pleasing but also versatile. The thermal modification process deepens its color into a warm hue, reminiscent of western red cedar and high-end tropical hardwoods like ipé. Over time, it naturally adjusts to its environment, making it a perfect fit for modern design trends. The intense heat treatment alters hem-fir at the cellular level, making it resistant to rot, decay and infestation. This durability makes it ideal for various applications, from sun-soaked decks to storm-battered siding. Thermally modified hem-fir is stable and perfect for areas with changing weather and humidity. The heat treatment reduces its tendency to absorb water, ensuring that the boards remain straight and reliable. The Thermal Modification Process The thermal modification process involves heating the wood at very high temperatures in an oxygen-starved environment. This process reduces moisture absorption, improves decay resistance, and offers long-lasting durability without chemicals.

COMBILIFT
Transform your lumber handling operations with Combilift Combilift, the material handling specialist, develops custom-made and space-saving solutions designed to help lumber and building material businesses handle long, bulky loads more safely and efficiently. As global trade grows, containerization remains a key method of transporting goods, but loading and unloading long products such as lumber can be labor-intensive, time-consuming and potentially hazardous. The Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet) offers a faster, safer alternative for timber and lumber businesses. Designed to handle rough-sawn timber, flat-packed goods and panel products and with a maximum capacity of 65,000 lbs., it can load or unload a 40-ft. container in under six minutes with just one operator. A patented push-pull mechanism moves the load into the container on a durable Hardox 500 steel sheet, eliminating the need for operators to enter the container and manually shuttle products from back to front. This reduces manual handling and personnel requirements while helping minimize product damage and workplace risk. By streamlining the container loading process, the Combi-CSS can help lumber businesses improve speed, safety and efficiency while reducing product damage. Beyond container loading, efficient handling of long and bulky products remains essential across lumber yards and warehouses. Combilift’s C-Series and CB range of multidirectional forklifts can travel forwards, backwards and sideways, enabling operators to maneuver wooden panels or structural timber beams safely through narrow aisles and confined spaces. This reduces the need for overhead load carrying, minimizes collision risks and product damage and helps businesses make better use of available storage space. Together, the Combi-CSS and C-Series demonstrate Combilift’s approach to lumber handling: moving, storing and loading long products more efficiently, safely and cost-effectively. With nearly three decades of expertise and machines in operation in over 85 countries, Combilift continues to drive Lifting Innovation, improving safety, productivity and efficiency across the timber industry.

HOOVER TREATED WOOD PRODUCTS
Turn a Specialty Product into a Competitive Advantage In today’s competitive lumber market, the most profitable opportunities are often found in products that your competitors don’t stock. Fireretardant-treated wood (FRTW) is one of those opportunities. Unlike commodity lumber, FRTW is a specification-driven building product used almost exclusively in commercial construction. Because it is specified by architects and engineers to satisfy building code requirements, contractors need the right product, from the right supplier, at the right time. They are not shopping for the lowest price—they are looking for a knowledgeable dealer with inventory they can depend on. For dealers, that creates a compelling business opportunity. Stocking FRTW can generate higher margins than commodity lumber, attract commercial contractors who make repeat purchases, and establish your yard as the local source for code-compliant specialty products. Since most home centers and mass merchandisers do not inventory FRTW, dealers who do often face significantly less competition while developing long-term relationships with professional builders. The use of FRTW continues to expand in multifamily housing, schools, healthcare facilities, mixed-use buildings, and renovations where building codes require enhanced fire performance. As more projects specify FRTW, contractors increasingly expect their local dealer to have material available without lengthy special orders. Dealers who stock these products can capture business that might otherwise go elsewhere. When choosing a supplier, experience, product breadth, and technical credibility matter. Hoover is the world’s largest manufacturer of FRTW products and has supplied the commercial construction industry for decades. Hoover manufactures the industry’s leading interior and exterior fire-retardant-treated product lines—PyroGuard® and ExteriorFireX®—offering treated lumber, glulam, plywood and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) to meet a broad range of project requirements.

Toolbx is now offering AI Order Entry, which takes material lists and purchase orders customers and sales reps send in, matches every line to the dealer’s catalog, and pushes the approved order into the ERP. Toolbx connects to the email inbox a dealer already uses, so material lists are picked up and drafted automatically, whatever form they arrive in. Teams can also bulk upload, queuing up to 10 files at once, with each becoming its own draft order. The tool captures whatever context the document carries: the customer, the account, the job site, the requested date, the delivery or will-call details and any notes. Every line is matched to a SKU and unit of measure in the dealer’s own catalog, and related products are grouped the way a sales rep would lay out a quote. A drafted order typically comes back in under a minute.

That’s why Greg Zuern decided to try something completely different. ------------| FLASHBACK
64 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH
FLASHBACK: ISLAND ALOHA
IN THE EARLY 1960s, Maui, Hi.-based MDG Building Supply was among the Islands’ top go-to sources for building products. Sixty-four years ago this month, we reported on the grand opening of its fancy fuller-service complex in Wailuku, Hi. The six-acre site had a 64,500-sq. ft. sales floor for DIY carpenters, plumbers, masons and electricians, enclosed warehouse, a complete home planning department, and parking for about 60 cars. It replaced a waterfront site it had outgrown. GM Frank Dolim explained that while the lease on the old site “expires in two years, the buildings there are old, the area is too small, and it is threatened by tidal waves.” Over the years, tidal waves caused
MDG more than $40,000 in damage. Established in 1905 as Maui Dry Goods & Grocery Co., the company went on an expansion blitz after World War II, trying to serve all manner of Hawaiian home-related needs. Nine months before unveiling the larger Wailuku location, MDG opened Maui’s first department store, Mim’s, in the Kahului Shopping Center. MDG’s domination would not last the decade. In 1969, the company became embroiled in costly realestate litigation, which would lead to it systematically selling off assets. One lumberyard was converted to a car dealership. The hardware division was sold to its store manager, who used the Wailuku location as the

springboard to launching Ameritone Maui, one of Hawaii’s best-known paint and decorating supply businesses. Mim’s closed in 2002. MM
NEW MDG Building Supply complex featured (upper left) a large retail show floor adjacent to the accounting department; (upper right) back of the store, housing plumbing, electrical supplies, and other heavy building materials, all serviced by a separate sales counter; (lower left) shed holding a resaw and planer; and (lower right) the drafting department, which employed three full-time draftsmen. Besides take-offs, they would also draw plans to customer specs free of charge.
