I’m a sucker ’ that I find myself speechless. Caught truly flat footed where all the signs point one direction and in spite of that, I went the other way. This is going to be a rant that I’m sure will have all of you shaking your head in the disappointment of how naive I apparently am. I’ll try to keep it brief.

It started one morning after my 4:00 a.m. workout. I noticed a crack in the drywall and I thought, did we have an earthquake That led me to notice cabinet base moulding in the kitchen separating and our wood floor starting to get darker in an area near the fridge. Fast forward two hours later and the plumber says I have a leaking ice-maker supply line and should call a remediation company. Remediation is now on site and says it’s not a little fix and I should call insurance.

Here’s what will make you laugh I have always been “responsible” and had additional coverage through top tier companies for that “emergency.” In all of our years, we have NEVER had an insurance claim of any sort. Something small I figured was simply my responsibility. I always imagined if that day happened when I called insurance that I would go something like this: “Oh, Mr. Adams, I’m so sorry this happened to you and your family. But don’t worry, you’ve got a great policy and we’re going to take care of everything for you” Well, reality hit me squarely in the face. The first response was, “You have a $2,000 deductible and I would suggest that you pay out of pocket because wildfires have made it hard to get insurance in your area.” Remediation did their jobs which left us with no kitchen, our fridge in the garage, and a coffee maker, toaster and microwave in the laundry room along with an estimate of about $120,000 and three to five months to get my home back to where it was as they would have to replace all of the wood floors, cabinets, etc.

Several more calls (no visits) just extended on the insurance company’s opening shot with them implying they would not cover anything because their impression is that the “ leak has been happening for more than 24 hours.” I asked where that was in my policy and the response was “ it states a reasonable time’ and we determine that to be 24 hours.” As I write this, we are five weeks and counting without a decision from insurance.

So here we are with something I’m legally obligated to have, pay for to be “responsible” all of these years and may still be left with the full bill to pay because apparently, I am supposed to inspect my entire house every 24 hours so I can find the first drop of water, videotape it at that time, and

immediately take steps to minimize the damage (insurance’s words, not mine).

At the end of the day, this is what I call a “first world problem.” My family has their health, we are employed and can provide, and we have a home (minus a kitchen). But, it is a disappointing realization when you discover that “like a good neighbor, I’ll be there” is really just a slogan and not the foundational value of an organization. This is why I left my past lives because corporate spreadsheets and politics of the moment became more important than people and delivering on what you say you’ll do. To me, even if you’re focused on the spreadsheet their strategy is short sighted. They have lost a customer forever and worst, anyone who ever asks me about them will hear my story.

Perhaps I’m a sucker more because I believe the world is still a place that may only exist in my imagination. Maybe I’m a sucker to lead our organization to focus on a business of “service” to our industry, readers and clients. That things always work out over the long haul by doing the right thing, even if there isn’t a column on the spreadsheet to account for it. It’s not just my present situation I see this happening over and over again with one time “important, valuable people” being discarded once they are no longer valuable in the moment.

As I write this I am now smiling a bit. Maybe being a sucker isn’t all bad because it means I still have hope that good will prevail. That there are still honorable people out there who are suckers just like me. We may not end up with all of the “gold,” but to me there are things more valuable and they allow me sleep peacefully at night.

Rest easy if you’re one of those “sucker good guys” and also, remember that next month as we prepare for next year’s 100 year anniversary, that I’m going to ask a couple favors from each of you

Do you see what I see?

How millennials view the lumber industry .S. d r duc industry members constantly strive to determine how to best promote and position their industry and products.

Studies show that many in the public know little about the industry or the variety of wood products produced and hold a generally negative perception of the industry (Baldwin 2004, Stout et al.

2020).

In addition to combatting public perception and unfamiliarity, the industry also faces a labor problem. As older employees retire, enticing younger generations to work in a field that they know little about or are not interested in makes it challenging to fill empty positions with skilled employees.

Millennials (individuals born between 1980-2000) are the biggest generation in the United States’ workforce and consumer market and, thus, a major driving force of the economy. Conversations among industry professionals at offices, conferences, and tradeshows over best practices to engage new generations

of potential employees have intensified.

The industry is facing the dilemma of how best to market to and recruit a generation that is uniquely different.

In contrast to previous generations, millennials grew up during the age of digital technological advancement. For them, computers, cellphones, and the internet have always been the norm and they are accustomed to having relationships with companies and public figures through social media platforms.

They are considered brand-loyal, socially conscious, and environmental advocates. While older generational employees are considered loyal to their employers and tend to stay at a company for years, millennials tend to change companies and positions frequently.

How do these characteristics impact the wood products industry that is dependent on unique skills that are not easily taught or easily replaced The wood products industry is a major contributor to the economy. In 47 states, wood products companies are

among the top 10 employers among manufacturing sectors (Forth 2018).

However, consumers do not realize the industry’s economic importance and have little to no desire to work in the industry (Gazal 2019 et al., Stout et al.

2020). In 2018, to get a thorough understanding of millennials’ attitudes and perceptions of the wood products industry and wood products, we asked over 1,500 U.S. millennials a series of questions focused on the industry and wood products.

Industry-related questions requested millennials’ opinions regarding topics such as general knowledge, industry reputation/credibility, and the industry’s relationship with the environment.

Product-related questions requested millennials’ opinions on wood product characteristics, styles, and durability.

We also asked specific questions related to Cross Laminated Timber. CLT is an innovative wood product that is new to U.S. markets. It is a semi-rigid composite, plate-like engineered wood Building-Products.com

product, which is commonly composed of an uneven number of layers, each made of boards placed side by side (Brandner et al. 2016). In addition to the questions about the industry and wood products, we also asked millennials questions related to self-perception and social media use.

Overall, only 65 of the respondents knew of the industry before we conducted this research. The majority that did have knowledge, identified as being Caucasian. These millennials were more likely to hear about the industry from family and friends (60 ) compared to a career center (6 ) at a college or from outside resources.

This response may indicate a need for increased industry visibility, especially in educational settings and among non-Caucasian ethnic groups.

We also asked respondents to indicate their thoughts on career opportunities within the industry. Approximately, 52 agreed there is employment opportunity in the industry, with males being more likely to agree. Older millennials aged 27-29 (41 ) agreed more with this question versus those aged 18-20 (24 ). However, when all respondents were asked if they had an interest to join the industry, a majority (51 ) indicated having no interest. Why is this Overall, most of the remaining responses for all of the questions related to careers in the industry leaned towards neutral views. These views may be due to a lack of knowledge of the range of industry career opportunities and the industry work environment. Addressing these issues may be the industry’s first step in recruiting a skilled, diverse workforce.

Questions focusing on the industry’s relationship with the environment showed the most negative reaction. Approximately, 71 agreed that seeing forest lands cleared makes them sad, with females more likely than males to strongly agree with this statement. A majority (63 ) of the millennials also agreed that the wood products industry damages our forests. Many millennials also believe that the industry does NOT replant after cutting forests However, millennials gave strong support (71 ) for the industry to continue to promote its environmental friendliness and stated that they viewed oxygen, animal habitat and water as the most important forest resources.

Wood products were the lowest ranked resource out of the six options provided.

While many wood products companies have made environmental stewardship and sustainability a key initiative in their Building-Products.com

mission, it may not be very visible to the public. As climate change becomes increasingly important to the public, especially the younger generations, companies promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship are looked upon favorably by millennials.

Although, the industry did not fare well in terms of millennials’ perceptions, products made of wood were highly favored. Millennials believe wood products are beautiful (84 ) and have an important place in the consumer market (78 ). While they understand the aesthetic qualities of wood products, they do not fully understand the mechanical and structural qualities of wood. When provided a series of statements related to the durability and strength of wood, perceptions were less favorable.

However, there is hope Millennials were given a series of statements related to the safety in using CLT in tall buildings. When answering with no/ limited knowledge of CLT, most respondents felt using CLT for tall buildings was unsafe. After providing them with detailed information on CLT, their perceptions changed. This observation highlights the importance of providing the public/consumers with information about the industry and its products.

So, what was the consensus opinion of millennials on the wood products industry and wood products Overall, millennials know little about and do not think highly of the industry. However, in contrast, they perceive wood products positively and think it appeals to their sense of style This study reveals a gap in knowledge millennials have regarding industry practices and the value of its products to the U.S. economy. Throughout the study, the level of education rose as a key marker of difference between millennials. Those with a higher level of education expressed stronger opin-

ions (positive or negative) compared to those with a high school degree or less.

However, the initial evaluation of responses emphasizes the importance of fact-based messaging about the wood products industry as a means of shifting understanding and opinions.

By embracing new communication avenues, the industry may find increased success in engaging with younger generations to break down misperceptions.

Innovative communication methods may expand the reach of marketing and informational messaging. Social media plays an important role in communication among younger generations and the businesses they patronize. Millennials and subsequent generations are tech savvy individuals comfortable with various forms of technology. Millennials in this study overwhelmingly agreed that social media can help businesses build a strong brand identity (73 ) and promote corporate social responsibility (71 ).

In the end, the industry fixing any issues of industry misperceptions may help foster a better relationship with the public and help to recruit new employees. Their public visibility could improve through positive advocacy of the industry and its environmental practices. It will not be an easy or quick fix, but with dedication and time the industry might be able to turn a page to a new, evolved chapter.

In addition, there are a wide assortment of exotic South American hardwoods that have rapidly grown in popularity across North America due to their ability to add an artistic flair into most any vision and/or design trend. Generally, the thicker the board, the greater the durability thanks to the multiple times it can be re-sanded over time.

Another consideration is the face width of each individual floor board. Solid wood flooring typically ranges from 2-1/4” to 5” with wider planks possible on a custom mill basis. Buffalo stampede u ca a the kid out of Buffalo, but you can’t take Buffalo out of the kid. And that kid, Sam Olson, is the poster child for that town of 400, which barely merits a dot in the far (and empty) northwest corner of South Dakota.

Sam was born there. He left just long enough to get a degree in business entrepreneurship from Black Hills State University, with which came the predictable Dad question: Now what “My dad was a contractor, so I always thought I’d end up working for him no concrete plan,” Sam allows.

Well, if the kid had no idea, his dad felt free to supply him with one. At 77, the owner of the town’s hardware store was ready to retire from the business that had hardly changed over his 47 years on the spot, other than ripping pages off the calendar. “It presented an opportunity. Interested ’ asked my dad. Want to help us take this on ’” Well, why not “I had zero experience, knew nothing about a POS system (or anything else). I had no idea.

But I learned real quick.” Dad put up the cash and Sam the labor. “I was basically an employee, but could build that into ownership. I’d always know that I’d never leave’-leave Buffalo.

So I came out, looked at the store, and thought, Why not ’ I was young and bulletproof

And the town fostered a way of life he cherished. “I liked that a handshake really means something here; you own it, you need to stand behind it. That’s something my parents had instilled in me: Make it right. And people buy into that. Besides, when I agreed to take it on, my parents treated my kid’s dream seriously. They’d do the purchase, and I’d do all the work.”

Work What work What drives business in the epicenter of nowhere “Ag and cattle,” Sam explains, and just down the road (OK, an hour or two) the fabled South Dakota oil fields, which were bringing in workers: “Lots of young people moving back and businesses coming to town,” Sam noted.

The first day on the job, while doing inventory, the temp grew more stifling by the hour. When Sam went to turn on the A/C, he discovered there was none. So that became his first purchase, applauded by the retirement-age staffers who’d stayed on to get him started.

Next: a computer system, which helped with inventory.

“Previously, everything had been done by hand. But I’ll be honest: I didn’t have the resources and didn’t know where to look.” After installing a POS system, he turned his attention to a musty, overlooked storeroom. “I gutted it, opened it up from 2,000 sq. ft. to 3,500 sq. ft. to use as our paint room.”

Finally, a reset “a huge undertaking; we added lots of SKUs. New lighting, too. Resets are always extremely difficult, but extremely worth it,” he declares. Afterward, the town’s old-timers would come in and look around, with “I didn’t know you carried .’ We grew the hardware section, added power tools. We revamped the paint section, making it a category. We didn’t reinvent the wheel,” he laughs. “Instead, we adopted the best practices of others.

Lots of customer interaction. And we worked on training a lot, using online resources.”

Today the operation has morphed into a staff of 10 fulltimers. Are new hires hard to come by, a reporter asks “Well,” Sam ponders, “one benefit and one detriment of the oil fields is they brought people to town. But they also brought the demand for competitive wages. It also brought a lot of young people back to their parents’ surrounding ranches, but they needed work while waiting for the old folks to retire, so we got lucky. Our attitude is, we’re gonna help our people, so when they leave, they’ll be happier than when they walked in. And for our customers, we also want to put a smile on their face.”

a few houses a year and do repairs and additions mostly pole barns and livestock buildings. “And we just picked up business in Spearfish, in the Black Hills, where I have a high-school buddy. Housing there is growing exponentially. We drive to a lumber mill there to pick up material, so we might as well bring up deliveries, too.

“We’re adding flooring, windows and cabinets to make it one-stop shopping. The idea is, to keep business right here in Buffalo because the thing is, once you leave town to shop, you buy everything elsewhere. And we want the whole project. That’s why, after buying Buffalo Hardware in 2012, in 2016 we bought Buffalo Ranch Supply livestock feed to keep a local outfit in business, and soon after, purchased Olson Propane, a former gas station. We never set out to grow this way, but those owners were all ready to retire. The acquisitions kind of reset the local culture and got the whole town motivated. It made it all right for others to expand and be successful.”

How to keep on growing the business, then “Through our culture We need to focus on making everything right: That’s how we gain loyalty. It’s okay to have a problem it’s how you handle it, the follow-through.”

Social media to the rescue Buffalo’s chance to compete with the big boys does not lie in, say, advertising the advantages of a new power tool “any box can do that What they cannot emulate Buffalo’s trump card are its people.” And Sam builds on that. “We push for photos of our people in our ads to differentiate ourselves. If you can get your staff to tell about why they like a certain product, it’s more personal. It’s not your usual sales flier; it’s more lighthearted, more fun.

“Shaine, our manager, deserves the credit; he likes to poke fun. Every week we feature him in the newspaper not with a product, but his photo and a riddle. People really look forward to that His having fun is what makes it authentic. Right now, let’s give young Sam a minute to bask in his recent award as one of the National Retail Hardware Association’s Young Retailers of the Year.

Emotional control al a ra r of emotion. If we are nervous, our customer will be nervous. If we are aggressive, which means we don’t really care, we are just there for the order, our customers will be defensive. When we are calm and prepared, our customers will have a sense of calm and will be open to our suggestions.

Easier said than done. The sales process is emotional.

In addition to the sales process, in the lumber industry we have a market that moves, sometimes dramatically. This movement can affect our income. We do not have control of the market, which causes its own type of anxiety.

Preparation Is Key

As simple as this seems, most sellers are not prepared.

They come to the customer and in one form or another and say, “Mrs. Customer, Whadya need today ” These sellers might as well push the “Treat me bad” button. They receive poor treatment and blame it on the customer. This is why a lot of sellers are miserable.

When we are not prepared, we don’t bring value. Our customers are busy. If we don’t bring them value, we are wasting their time. Time is money, so unprepared salespeople are stealing money from their potential customers.

How do you treat someone who is stealing from you When we are prepared with ideas and products that make money for our customers, they will give us their attention. This does not mean that we get the order every time, but we will get a fair chance at their business.

Unreasonable Customers

Some customers are bullies. Some are whiners and complainers. Some have unreasonable demands. Emotional control is important with these types of customers. I remind my students that unreasonable customers are great Why Because they keep our competition away.

With these types of customers, we stay calm. We don’t jump on the emotional roller coaster with them. Nor are we intimidated. We know we can help them, so we are patient and unperturbed by their antics and stay the sales course.

Losing Orders

Anyone can sell when they’re selling; it takes a real salesperson to sell when the going is rough. We are competitive. We want to win. Losing is hard. It can knock us off course. We have control of the sales process; the sales gods have control of the results.

Sales is similar to shooting a basketball or putting a golf

ball. The best shooters and putters do not think about the result. They KNOW it’s going in. What they concentrate on is the stroke. Shooters and putters who struggle worry about making instead of focusing on the process. The same is true in sales. Master Sellers are always positive and confident. If they are on a cold streak, their attitude is, “This is the one. I will sell on this call.” They have a long memory for victories and an nonexistent memory for failure.

Getting Orders

As weird as it seems, it’s important that we stay on course after getting the business. It’s fine to celebrate a victory, briefly, but then we need to get back on the horse and keep selling. When I got an order as a young salesperson, I would be so emotionally excited, I couldn’t focus for the rest of the day. I remember saying to a Master Seller, “Hey, I just got an order ” He deadpanned, “Great. Now go get another.”

Losing Customers

Master Sellers know that “It’s not a question of if, but when we will lose our best customer.” Most sellers start looking for their umbrella when it starts to rain; Master Sellers have several umbrellas ready BEFORE it rains.

The majority of sellers do not prospect enough. They prospect for the first couple years, build an account box, then only prospect when they lose accounts. Master Sellers are always upgrading their account box.

If we don’t prospect our accounts own us. Good luck winning a negotiation with a customer who owns you.

Master Sellers are free partners with their customers.

Emotional Self-Talk

Our subconscious does not know the difference between the truth and what WE tell it. Great sellers are the king/queen of their own world. We must tell ourselves that we are great. This is not bragging it’s psyching up for the challenge we face every day, on every call.

Engaging employees during COVID-19

add a tight labor market and increasing wages, employers are dealing with employee “bored out” (chronic boredom leading to feeling totally meaningless) and “the big quit” (with 4 million people quitting their jobs in April alone), while also trying to balance client demands and the changing business environment. Making an effort to engage employees can help mitigate all of these challenges and result in a stronger, more efficient workplace.

Gallup defines engaged employees as being “highly involved in and enthusiastic about their work and workplace.” Employees who are engaged help to improve and innovate the business and aren’t just watching the clock to collect a paycheck. Higher engagement also results in lower turnover a crucial advantage in today’s tight labor market.

As we all continue to deal with COVID-19, working to engage employees should be a matter of highest priority for business leaders. While engagement techniques used to involve lofty ideas, these days smaller, more personalized techniques may prove best. Some effective ways to engage with employees are: First, acknowledge everything is different. Employers should freely acknowledge the changes many of their employees have faced and that most people are making lifestyle changes because they have to or want to as a result of COVID-19’s wide-ranging impacts. Regardless of the underlying reasons, employees are reevaluating their lives and priorities after these past 18 months and are making big decisions, such as looking for new jobs. Employers should also be honest about the changes to the business clients, products, services, protocols, finances, staffing, etc. that have impacted employees.

Check in with your employees regularly. Before they return to the office, find out what life looks like for them

now and have an honest dialogue about their concerns. After they return, continue to check in to make sure things are going well and make adjustments as needed. Do not check in too often as most employees only want to hear from their boss once or twice a week.

Review the possibility of remote or hybrid work arrangements. A survey conducted by FlexJobs revealed 98 of workers want to stay remote either full-time or as part of a hybrid arrangement for various reasons including not having to commute (84 ) and cost savings (75 ) which is estimated to save $5,000 to $10,000 per year. Employers who want employees in the office should explain the job-related necessity and, if at all possible, try to make some more flexible arrangements to retain these employees. If they cannot work remotely all, part, or any of the time, acknowledge that too and perhaps provide an off-setting benefit such as free lunches or flexible scheduling.

Address employee concerns, especially regarding health and safety. The survey also showed employees’ primary concerns surrounding the return to the office included exposure to COVID (49 ), lack of COVID health and safety measures (32 ), and being required to adhere to health and safety measures (21 ). When you implement and enforce the guidelines set by experts and legal authorities, not only are you abiding by the legal regulations, but you also are assuring hesitant employees of your commitment to safety while also creating a zero-tolerance policy your resistant employees know they need not waste time in thwarting.

Establish and enforce job, performance and availability expectations. Whether an employee is in-person, remote, or hybrid, and regardless of their position in the company, you should hold them accountable for doing their job duties, communicating with co-workers and managers, and being available for clients and meetings. Avoid “presenteeism” focus on availability, not attendance. If needed, re-evaluate the job duties to accommodate where they are working or what they want to do so employees are less likely to feel bored and discontent.

Establish clear channels of communication throughout the company. Companies function best when everyone is communicating clearly, and this is even more important when some employees are remote. While walking to someone’s desk may have been the norm before, now there needs to be structure and planning. Video and phone conferencing can be an efficient way to schedule meetings, send invites, and track attendance. Instant messaging or texting may be a new way of getting a quicker answer.

Respect personal time and needs. Be mindful when work demands extend beyond the employee’s day and try to restrict or discourage emails and voicemails outside work hours. Everyone needs time away from work whether to relax and recharge, to attend a kid’s soccer match, or to just get to the grocery store. It may be harder for employees who work from home to truly check out from work, and if they are non-exempt, they probably need to be paid for that time.

Encourage all employees to unplug to handle what they need to so they can focus when back at work.

Q. We have an employee who is constantly on their phone for personal business. While we understand they need to check in with their family, it gets out of hand and keeps them from doing work. It also disrupts the office keeping everyone else from being able to do their work efficiently.

What can we do?

A. You can, and should, address the issues with the employee. Explain that the excessive time is impacting their productivity as well as those around them. If you have rest and meal breaks, require they restrict personal calls and texts to those times except for emergencies. Perhaps make an exception in certain situations such as when their child calls to say they got home from school, but then enforce a strict time limit on the conversation or tell the employee to use that as their rest break. You can also require employees to lock their phone in lockers, desks, or vehicles or, if they are accessible, have them silence any tones or sounds to be less disruptive. As with all policies, be consistent in enforcing it, requiring all employees to follow the same requirements.

Be flexible. COVID is not going away any time soon so we will all have to continue to make adjustments.

Employees will get sick or have to care for people who are sick. Employees will have to quarantine or stay home with a child who is quarantining. Understand that employees have to take care of their families first and the more flexible you can be, the more they will feel supported and ready to work when they can.

Allow employees to have some fun at work. While potlucks may be out of the question for a while, you can still give employees a chance to have fun at work. Hold a spirit day where people can wear their school or team colors. Sponsor a group to participate in a local charity event.

Surprise employees with a half-day off when things are slow. Celebrate birthdays and special occasions with cupcakes and cookies. Find out what your employees value and work them into your plans.

Consider the big picture. While many employers may wonder how they will be able to add this to their long to-do list, it is important to balance the effort engaging employees requires with the possibility of those employees leaving the company.

Often it is easier to accommodate a current employee’s temporary needs than recruit, hire, and train a new employee, which is even more difficult in today’s labor market.

Your Lumber Grading Glossary u’ any time around lumber, and we know you have, you’ve probably picked up a bit of the lingo.

But there’s more so much more than the words we all know, like knot, wane, bow, etc. Next time you’re hanging out with lumber people, drop a few of these words defined below and watch your cool factor rise.

I

Let’s start with the most well-known terms.

Bow. Part of warp, bow is a deviation flatwise from a straight line drawn from end-to-end of a piece.

Cup. Part of warp, cup is the deviation in the face of a piece from a straight line drawn from edge-to-edge of a piece and is measured at the point of greatest distance from the straight line.

Burl. A distortion of gran, usually caused by abnormal growth due to injury of the tree. The effect of burl is assessed in relation to knots.

Checks. A separation of the wood normally occurring across or through the rings of annual growth and usually as a result of seasoning. Checks fall into the following categories: surface, through, small, medium, large, roller, light roller, medium roller, and heavy roller.

Grain. The fibers in the wood and their direction, size, arrangement, appearance, or quality. Can be broken down further into slope of grain, summerwood, springwood, vertical grain, edge grain, rift grain, flat grain, slash grain, mixed grain, spiral grain, and diagonal grain.

Heart. Heartwood is the inner core of the tree trunk comprising the annual rings containing nonliving elements. In some species, heartwood has a prominent color that is different from the sapwood. There are multiple kinds of heartwood, to include boxed heart, heart center, free of heart centers, and firm red heart.

Knots. A portion of a branch or limb that has become incorporated into a piece of lumber. In lumber, knots are classified as to form, size, quality, and occurrence.

But there’s more You might see a knot described as red, black, round, oval, spike, pin, small, medium, large, sound, pith, hollow, unsound, firm, tight, intergrown, watertight, encased, loose/not firmly fixed, fixed, cluster, star-checked, well-scattered, and well-spaced.

Sapwood. Outer layers of growth between the bark and the heartwood which contain the sap.

Warp. Any deviation from a true or plane surface, including bow, crook, cup, twist or a combination thereof.

And now a few that are more obscure.

Crook. Part of warp, crook is a deviation edgewise from a straight line drawn from end to end of a piece and is measured at the point of greatest distance from the straight line.

Moisture content. The weight of the water in wood expressed in percentage of the weight of the oven-dry wood.

Occasional pieces. This means not more than 10 of the pieces in a parcel or shipment.

Pitch streak. A well-defined accumulation of pitch in the wood cells in a streak. Pitch streaks are described as very small, small, medium, large, very large, or as a pitch seam.

Splits. A separation of the wood through the piece to the opposite surface or to an adjoining surface due to the tearing apart of the wood cells.

Trim. Trimming of lumber is the act of cross cutting a piece to a given length.

Wane. Bark of lack of wood from any cause, except eased edges, on the edge or corner of a piece of lumber.

We bet you’ve never heard of some of these!

Pith. Pith is the small soft core in the structural center of a log.

Pocket. A well-defined opening between the rings of annual growth which develops during the growth of a tree. It usually contains pitch or bark. Pockets can be classified as very small, small, medium, large, very large, closed, through or open.

Stained wood and Firm Red Heart. Stained Heartwood or Firm Red Heart is a marked variation from the natural color: it can range from pink to brown, and it not to be confused with natural red heart. Natural color is usually uniformly distributed through certain annual rings, whereas stains are usually in irregular patches.

Stress grades. Lumber grades having assigned working stress and modulus of elasticity values in accordance with accepted basic principles of strength grading.

US LBM Acquires Massachusetts, Michigan Chains Within days of each other, US LBM struck deals to add two formidable businesses to its stable six-unit Massachusetts dealer Mid-Cape Home Centers and two-branch Michigan dealer Northern Building Supply.

With its roots tracing back to 1895, South Dennis, Ma.-based Mid-Cape Home Centers supplies professional builders, remodelers and homeowners in Massachusetts’ South Shore, Cape Cod and the Islands with lumber and specialty building materials.

“We’re excited for this partnership with US LBM, which shares our focus on quality, service, community involvement and people,” said MidCape president and general manager Jack Stevenson, who will continue to lead Mid-Cape’s day-to-day operations. “Together, Mid-Cape and US LBM will set an even higher bar, as we remain committed to our loyal customers, local communities and mission to be the supplier of choice in Southeastern Massachusetts. Hancock Adding NH Dealer

Hancock Lumber, Casco, Me., will acquire Winnipesaukee Lumber, an independent, family-owned LBM supplier that has operated in Wolfeboro, N.H., since 1985.

BSF Adds Apollo Software

Builders FirstSource has purchased the Apollo software platform from bankrupt CLT manufacturer Katerra for $4.5 million.

Introduced in early 2019, Apollo provides design collaboration and workflow, construction budgeting and scheduling, and field task assignment with mobile functionality.

Ace on Track to Open 170+ Stores This Year

Ace Hardware, the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative in the world, has already opened 110 new stores in 2021, and is planning to open at least an additional 60 stores by the end of the year.

The co-op operates more than 5,500 locally owned hardware stores in all 50 states and 70 countries, with global sales topping $20 billion. Ace’s unique cooperative business model offers local entrepreneurs not only the ability to become owners of their local store operation, but they also become one of a limited number of shareholders of Ace Hardware Corp.

Stock+Field Is Now RP Home & Harvest

R.P. Lumber Co., Edwardsville, Il., is rebranding all 22 Stock Field locations it acquired through the bankruptcy process this past spring to their new name, R.P. Home & Harvest. Hardwood Flooring Manufacturer Changes Hands

AHF Products, Mountville, Pa., has acquired certain assets of hardwood flooring manufacturer American OEM, the trade name of Cumberland Products Group.

From its plant in Only, Tn., American OEM manufactures Raintree, Hearthwood, Emily Morrow Home, and private label hardwood flooring.

The company was founded in 2013 by Don Finkell.

Construction Firms See More Growth Ahead While construction companies continue to face supply chain disruption as a result of the pandemic, these companies are more optimistic (56 ) than the national average (52 ), expecting overall economic conditions in the U.S. will improve, according to a new study from Umpqua Bank.

The survey shows that construction firms tend to see improving finances in the year ahead. About 66 said they expect revenues to increase, compared with an average of 55 for all sectors, and only behind that of retail (67 ).

The construction industry also expects profits to rise, with 52 saying so, compared with an average of 45 , and trailing only retail (67 ) and manufacturing (57 ).

Construction firms also said they will continue to retool their approaches over the next year. Remarkably, 73 said they plan to make significant changes to pricing, more than any other sector, with others trailing well behind, such as manufacturing (50 ), business services (49 ), and wholesale (48 ). About 34 said they are likely to take on debt to grow in the coming 12 months, versus 29 of all those polled. About 31 are considering increasing their real estate footprint, similar in inclination to other industries (32 ).

“Construction firms of all sizes have shown remarkable resilience during the pandemic, and generally appear optimistic about the economy and their prospects for growth,” says Richard Cabrera, executive VP at Umpqua Bank. “They have faced volatile commodity prices and labor shortages, but strong demand for real estate, such as housing and warehouses, has allowed operators to pass much of the rising costs on to buyers.”

Like many enterprises, businesses in the construction industry have made changes and adapted in response to the pandemic. However, they are less likely than other firms to keep changes made long term: only about 37 of firms said they will maintain most or all of the changes they put in place since March of last year, the lowest among all sectors in the study. The national average was 54 .

About 95 of the construction industry said they had supply issues over the last 12 months, compared with an average of 88 for all sectors.

Roughly 20 of construction firms said they are more likely to acquire another business in the coming year, versus 26 of all companies.

Only 33 of firms said they would likely automate repetitive tasks over the next year, below the average of 44 , but 58 they would look for ways to digitize the business to improve efficiency, in line with the average of 59 .

A Long Road to Louisville NAWLA members were incredibly fortunate that our essential industry, for the most part, continued to thrive in spite of all the challenges the past year and a half brought us. But we were impacted in our ability to interact face-toface in the ways we’re accustomed to. Being able to gather in person in Louisville this year is an incredibly welcome change.

Can anybody sell?

A

fter 30 years of being a sales trainer and conducting seminars, I am now ready to answer the most often asked question posed: “Can anybody sell?”

Now this question can be rephrased anyway you would like, such as, “Are you born a good salesperson?” or “Is the art of selling a natural skill?”, but anyway you slice it, the question really remains the same, “Can anybody sell?”

If I had a nickel for every time I was asked that question, well, let’s just say, I’d have a heck of a lot of nickels!

I’m not sure I knew the answer myself until I was fortunate enough to meet the greatest salesman who ever lived. No, it wasn’t many of the big shot authors and speakers, whose fraternity I too belong. Nope, it was a fellow named Ben Feldman.

You probably haven’t heard of him either, but you should have. In 1979, while I was with the New York Life Insurance Co., Ben led the industry in sales. That is all the insurance companies, not just mine. Actually, it is unfair to say he led the industry—he dominated it. The top nine agents were all fairly close to each other. Ben Feldman tripled the next closest competitor.

I had never seen a picture of Ben, but I imagined what he looked like. Outgoing, tall, aggressive, big booming voice. Really, I guess I saw him as a collection of every stereotype I had been led to believe was necessary to be an effective salesperson. One day I had the rare pleasure of meeting this man, and in a way, he changed my life. Ben Feldman stood about 5’3”, somewhat overweight, had hair a little like Larry from the Three Stooges, and spoke with a heavy lisp. Not quite what I had expected. Within seconds, however, I was drawn to the unique style that Ben Feldman possessed. He had none of the more conventional strengths that we associate with his kind of success, yet he remained true to his style, made what he had his strengths, and was dominant in his field.

It was then and there I learned the most valuable lesson I would ever receive in my life regarding our own personal style: I could not be Ben Feldman; I could, however, focus on his technique or process and continue to ask myself, “How can I do that so it sounds like Rob Jolles?” What is my personal style? Rob’s strengths aren’t Ben’s strengths, but than again, Ben’s aren’t Rob’s either.

Go for a golf lesson and you’ll understand what I mean, because you will see two different kinds of teachers. One will show you the way he or she hits it, put a bucket of balls in front of you, and work to get you to hit it the same

way. The other will put a bucket of balls in front of you, ask you to hit for a while, and then step in to help. In case you want to know, that second teacher is doing is studying your natural style.

Some golfers have longer arms, so are more flexible, and some have stronger left arms. I want the lesson from the second teacher, because what he’s doing is trying to blend his sound concept of technique, into your natural style.

Sadly, often sales managers, and mentors who are meaning to help, preach more of their style then their technique. This is because many are what we call “unconscious competents” and truly cannot separate one from the other. They frequently try to coach by saying things like, “This is not a complicated business, just work hard and good things will happen.” That bit of help would be the equivalent of a golf teacher saying, “Grip it and rip it!” This leaves many mistakenly trying to emulate the wrong things, be someone they are not, and leaving the field of selling disillusioned and discouraged.

“Can anybody sell?” Absolutely! The key is, to separate style from technique because each of us possesses our own style. For this lesson, and so many others, Ben Feldman should be an inspiration to us all. He possessed no obvious style attributes we associate with classic salespeople, yet he sold $1.6 billion of insurance in his lifetime! The key to being a good salesperson is not only learning what your natural style is, but also committing to it and utilizing it as effectively as possible.

In the summer of 1994 Ben Feldman passed away, but not without leaving us a few final gifts. He left many process behaviors that are repeatable and effective when working with clients. However, in my mind, his greatest gift may have been one he never articulated. He taught us all that if you commit to your own personal style you can become as great as you want to be.

IN Memoriam Robert Charles “Rob” Grost, 61, outside salesman with Midwest Timber, Edwardsburg, Mi., died Aug. 19, shortly after being diagnosed with leukemia.

He spent over 40 years in the lumber business. Rob worked for Progressive Affiliated Lumbermen (PAL), Grand Rapids, Mi.; Quality Wood Treating, Lansing, Mi.; and Central Michigan Lumber Co., St. Johns, Mi., before joining Midwest Timber in 2005.

John R. “Rusty” Fuqua, 61, co-owner of Fuqua Sawmill, Ocala, Fl., died Sept. 3. He worked for the family business for more than 40 years.

Benny Eugene Bowers, 82, former owner of Bowers Lumber Co., Thomasville, N.C., died Aug. 4.

He spent many years as an outside sales rep with Cox Wood Preserving Co. before taking over the family lumberyard.

Joseph Berry “Joe” Kelly, 75, CEO and co-owner of PJ Lumber Co., Prichard, Al., died Sept. 1.

He helped found the company in 1977 and most recently operated it with partner Fred Wilson.

SLB, USDA Intensify Promotion of Wood Products

The Softwood Lumber Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding that builds upon its relationship between with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to grow demand for wood products as natural climate solutions. The

organizations will jointly explore and coordinate additional market development, research, technological advances, and other activities to expand the use of wood in the built environment.

“Since signing the original MOU in 2015, the SLB and USDA have proudly worked together on many notable initiatives to promote and grow markets for softwood lumber in residential, commercial, and multifamily construction. We look forward to continued collaboration and cooperation for the benefit of the entire softwood lumber industry,” explained Caroline Dauzat, owner of Rex Lumber and SLB chair.

“Together, we’re working to accelerate the adoption of innovative wood building system solutions through strategic investments and partnerships in training and support of educational opportunities for construction professionals, sawmills in regions that have lost infrastructure, carbon and climate change resources, and the continued joint funding of WoodWorks.”

Through increased partnerships and co-funding of joint initiatives, the SLB and USDA will achieve shared goals and objectives and deliver them at a rate that is more efficient and effective than working separately. Key initiatives to accelerate adoption of innovative wood building solutions include: • Continuing joint funding of WoodWorks, a free provider of education and technical support related to the design, engineering and construction of commercial and multifamily wood buildings in the U.S. • Promoting carbon-sequestering wood as a means to mitigate climate

change through responsible material selection.

• Developing initiatives to expand understanding of embodied carbon, life cycle assessments, and the connection to forest management and wood construction.

• Creating events to expand connections with large corporations who can use wood products to meet their sustainability goals.

• Supporting university and young professional education programs by highlighting the benefits of forests and forest products and how to design and build with them.

• Establishing support programs for real estate developers and owners by removing or addressing market barriers to using wood products in new market segments.

• Exploring strategies and connections to sawmill investment for locations that have lost infrastructure.

“Transforming buildings from carbon emitters to carbon sinks by incorporating sustainably harvested and produced wood products from public and private timberlands benefits the environment and the economy more effectively than many other climate solutions currently available. This MOU symbolizes the positive impact that industry and government can have when they align on a common ambition and the strategy to achieve it,” said Cees de Jager, SLB president and CEO. The MOU was signed on Sept. 14 during a quarterly WoodWorks board meeting, an organization that the SLB and USDA jointly fund.

ifty-eight years ago this month, in October of 1963, BPD’s sister publication, The California Lumber Merchant, covered a slew of technological and design innovations, as forest products companies ramped up their research and development efforts to better serve the ongoing building boom.

P e r h a p s m o s t n o t a b l y, Weyerhaeuser Co. unveiled the first commercially marketed, completely prefinished wood siding.

The new product carried a written performance warranty that the siding would not require repainting for at least seven years and that the factory-applied paint film would never peel or blister. It was initially offered in two sizes of beveled siding (1/2x 8 and 3/4x10) in five light colors (Super White, Seafoam Green, Golden Yellow, Silver Grey, and Desert Sand).

E.M. Williston, technical director for softwood lumber, described the finish as a two-coat “breathing paint” of 4-mil thickness. The first coat consisted of blister-resistant baking alkyd resin primer, the same as that on their Primewood siding introduced early in 1962.

Along with the siding, Weyerhaeuser also introduced matching nails with baked-on enamel, plastic snap-on hammer caps to guard against marring paint, prefinished outside metal corners, touch-up paint, and matching PuttyStik pencils for coating cut ends.

The new prefinished siding was priced at about two-thirds more than unfinished vertical grain material.

“This means,” Williston said, “that prefinished siding will cost about $100 to $200 more for the average house for material, but this is offset by the savings in painting costs.

Most important, the factory prefinish assures better appearance, longer service life of the paint surface, and less maintenance.”

In other news of October 1963: • Union Lumber Co., Fort Bragg, Ca., became the first member mill of the California Redwood Association to introduce redwood glulam beams.

Branded as “Noyolam,” the beams were offered in sizes from 3x4 up to a “huge” 11x16, in lengths up to 40 ft. Each beam featured up to 20 laminates, each at least 1” in thickness. They also boasted top architectural grade redwood, a waterproof exterior adhesive, and dimensional stability afforded by kiln drying.

Targeted applications included ridge and roof elements, carports, wide entryways, headers and posts.

“We think we’ve combined the flexibility features of glulams with the proven advantages of kiln dried redwood,” noted VP of sales Sherman Bishop. “And we’re anticipating a good future for the Noyolam in the building industry.”

• National Gypsum announced plans to build its first production facility on the West Coast—a $5-million gypsum wallboard plant in Richmond, Ca. The facility opened the following summer and is still in operation.

• A record 10 billion bd. ft. of timber was cut from National Forests in fiscal year 1963, a 1 billion bd. ft. jump over the preceding year. The nation’s highest cut was on National Forests in Oregon (3.1 billion bd. ft. from 13 forests), followed by Washington (1.5 billion ft.) and California (1.4 billion ft.).

The harvest included over 1.3 billion bd. ft. of storm-damaged timber, primarily resulting from a devastating storm on Columbus Day 1962 that ravaged the Pacific Northwest.

“Prompt salvage of this valuable timber not only will prevent great monetary losses, but will help fire hazard and risk of further damage from insects and disease in the storm area,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman.

For comparison, in fiscal year 2020 about 2.5 billion bd. ft. was harvested from National Forests.
