Square pegs go in square holes
Employee turnover is a problem many companies address only when someone leaves and the replacement scramble begins.
Minimizing turnover should really begin long before the employee is interviewed. Surveys show that the company which correctly describes itself, profiles the job accurately and then matches the job with the applicant's unique talents, skills and beliefs can drastically cut turnover. Experts point to employee turnover as the largest single hidden cost in retailing.
The rose-colored glasses appear quickly when many companies tell a prospective employee what it's like to toil in their vineyard. Unless the employer is open about the true nature of the firm, what it does, what it expects and how it achieves results, how can anyone create a good match between the company and the new person?
Companies of all sizes need to frankly define the job they offer. Too many job descriptions are unrealistic and hide the true nature of the work to be done. Some are essentially dishonest. All this can only lead to big problems down the road when the new person discovers that what he was really
hired to do bears little resemblance to the Chance of a Lifetime pitch that began the encounter. Why companies that should know better continue this unethical and stupid practice is beyond us. A truthful, blunt and honest description will save everyone grief, time and money.
Employee hiring is one of the classic shoals in business - maybe even the Bermuda Triangle. Let's face it, the majority of managers at all levels hire those they "like" rather than objectively evaluate the evidence they have for their decision. How many companies use the sophisticated hiring profiles widely available today? Not many. How many check out in-depth the glowing claims that decorate a resume? Not many.
Everyone agrees employees are the most valuable asset of any company. Yet the muddlethrough amateurism persists, providing one more square peg for a round hole.
Each person is unique and can bring so much of value to any firm. The challenge is to convert hiring into a logical exercise that puts the square peg in the square hole to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Products Association reports that many of the "quality" complaints they hear are at least partially due to improper storage, faulty handling or common framing errors.
Lumber is a natural material, changing in response to changes in its surroundings. So, critical to ensuring satisfactory performance are proper air flow and adequate protection to prevent rapid alterations in moisture content and promote gradual acclimation.
As it acclimates, wood gains or loses moisture, swelling or shrinking accordingly. Problems arise when the moisture content changes unevenly or too quickly. Additionally, lumber also is susceptible to fungi and staining.
Although often such problems are merely aesthetic, sometimes they can lead to degradation of the lumber. The solution is proper storage.
The lumber's moisture content when it leaves the mill determines how it should be handled along the rest of the distribution chain. Unseasoned (green) lumber requires less protection; it can be stored outdoors, uncovered in cool weather for 30 to 45 days without damage.
Stocking green lumber does require quick inventory turns. The first shipment in should be the first shipment out, so gteen lumber is out of the yard within 30 days. Quick turns also provide some leeway if the contractor lets the shipment sit at the job site for a while.
If the wood is predicted to be stored for longer periods of time, it is safer to buy kiln dried or air dried, though the cost will be higher. If green lumber must be stored longer than a month, WWPA suggess stickering the bundles to permit even air circulation and guard against mold and stain.

Rain probably won't adversely
affect green lumber, but exposure to sun and warm weather may. The likelihood of stain and decay increases during warm months, necessitating speedy inventory turnover. Green lumber should be kept outside to allow air circulation and perhaps shaded by a roof or cover boards to protect the top course, which is sus-

ceptible to seasoning checks if exposed to the sun.
Anti-stain treatments will control molds, mildew and fungi for short periods (usually up to 30 days). Many mills offer these protective treatments - at an additional cost. End painting and, typically more effective, end waxing are olher valueadded services from the mill to help reduce end splitting and checking and help retain dimensional stability.
Pile burn. which can lead to structural degradation, may occur when green lumber is permitted to sit closestacked for several weeks in hot, humid conditions. The center of a stack begins to absorb considerable heat, creating ideal conditions for decay-causing fungi. The first sign of pile burn is a white, filmy fungus on the lumber. But often there is little visible evidence that the wood at the center of a stack is decaying until it is broken open.
Again, the best defense is rapid inventory turnover. Stickering the lumber also helps.
Since it is impractical to kiln dry
them, posts, beams and timbers are always manufactured green and usually develop seasoning checks while in storage. Although these checks have no effect on the wood's structural performance, excessive checking should be avoided.
To guard against drying too quickly, large dimension lumber should always be solid-stacked and, especially in warm temperatures, stored under a roof. If possible, use wetted burlap or continuous sprinkling to slow the drying and checking process.
fJnhke that of green lumber, dry lumber's moisture content is at or near what it will be once the wood acclimates. As a result, dry lumber is much less susceptible to twisting, warping, cupping and other moisturerelated dimensional stability woes.
Also unlike green lumber, dry lumber must be kept dry. Rain may undo the value gained by careful seasoning and jeopardize the product's dimensional stability. If storing it outdoors, loosely cover dry lumber with tarps, canvas or paper wrap. WWPA warns against using plastic wraps, which may trap in moisture and heat, accelerating fungal activity.
Dry lumber typically is wrapped when it leaves the mill. Yet paper wrapping provides only short term protectlon.
Wrapping that becomes torn from mishandling should be repaired promptly. Open or closed sheds are favored over outside storage for dry lumber.
To maintain the low moisture content achieved by kiln drying, store high grade items (shop, moulding, millwork) in a closed, heated shed with a clean, paved floor.
For outside storage, yards should be open, without trees or buildings severely hindering airflow. Proper water drainage is needed to prevent standing water from adding to the ambient humidity. Lumber should be stored at
least 12" to 18" inches off the ground to allow moist, cool air to move away from the wood. In dry climates, stacks of lumber should be configured perpendicular to prevailing winds to prevent end checking.
P.op", handling should not stop at the yard - but continue at the job site. First, help builders by loading the delivery truck in proper sequence; materials to be used first should be loaded last.

Materials stored at the work site rarely are adequately protected. WWPA advises making a few helpful suggestions to your customers:
. Do not place unprotected lumber directly on the ground. Use supports to keep units away from mud and groundwater. This is especially important with prefabricated materials (e.g., trusses), which cannot tolerate significant moisture gain.
Protect lumber at the job site with plastic or a tarp, yet leave the ends open to allow moisture to escape and allow room at the bottom of the pile for airflow. Plastic reaching to the ground acts like a greenhouse, trapping moisture and promoting decay.
. Set appropriate delivery sched-
ules to keep the lumber arriving as needed at the work site, but avoid unnecessarily lengthy storage in uncontrolled environments. Always store paneling, moulding and millwork indoors on supports, with good ventilation, and keep these materials away from newly poured concrete or freshly drywalled surfaces, where humidity is significantly higher.
Allow sufficient time for acclimation. Dry finish materials and siding require seven to l0 days to reach the moisture equilibrium of their new setting before installation. For siding, store the sheets in a covered, unheated area, so it is protected from rain, snow and sun while still able to acclimate to outside conditions. Sticker and store moulding, millwork and paneling in the room where they will be used, with heating and cooling systems operating.
Proper storage and handling is an essential step toward profitability and toward positioning your company as one that provides top quality products.

and what
IIJHEN we're relaxing by a ski V V lodge fireplace or toasting marshmallows around a campfire, we're very happy that wood burns. But, in a building product, combustibility is a definite shortcoming.
Fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) overcomes this handicap, providing all the desirable features of wood plus resistance to flames. It has existed for a century, but it is not well known by the average contractor. For dealers, it offers better profit potential than other lumber products since there is less competition.
FRTW is common lumber and plywood that are pressure treated with a fire retardant chemical. The treating process is similar to that used to drive preservative chemical into treated wood made for decks, fences and landscaping.
Should a fire strike, the fire retardant chemical reacts automatically with combustible gases and tars, which would be generated by untreated wood, and converts them to carbon char, water and carbon dioxide. All three of these reaction products reduce the fire haz-

an opportunity)
By Scott Hoffman Manager-Dricon Fire Retardant Hickson Corp.ard. The increased production of carbon char tends to insulate wood beneath the surface and slows down the rate at which underlying wood is consumed. The carbon dioxide and water vapor dilute combustible gases which reduces flame spread.
There are several brands of FRTW which have these traits. Each brand is produced using its own proprietary formulation, so they have different characteristics and should not be
casually interchanged or substituted. Lumber dealers should recognize these differences and ask questions before choosing which brand to sell.
In addition to satisfying basic code qualifications, you might consider other points:
. Performance record. How long has the brand existed and has it proven iselP
National code compliance report. Is there a National Evaluation Report?
Other recognition. Is it acceptable by HUD? L.A. Research Report? New York City? Factory Mutual?
Warranty. What is covered. how long does it extend, and what disclaimers are included?
. Minimum grade standards for the lumber and plywood that is treated.
. Other beneficial properties (e.g., EPA-registered termite and rot resistance).
Furthermore, you will want to consider the service and reliability of the treating company. Does it support your efforts in selling a
high margin specialty item or does it set up numerous dealers who revert to commodity selling?
Who buys it? Where is it used?
FRTW is usually purchased by professional builders who are following specifications which must meet a building code requirement for fire protection.
Occasionally a do-it-yourselfer buys FRTW, but that is rare. And occasionally FRTW is used where there is no code requirement (e.g., a stable housing valuable racehorses, a home with expensive paintings, and a private building not easily reached by fire trucks), but this is also rare.
Most frequently, FRTW is used in commercial structures (shopping centers, theaters, restaurants), institutional buildings (schools, government offices, prisons), industrial facilities (warehouses, offices), and multi-family housing (condominiums, townhouses, apartments).
How do I sell it?
Don't bother trying to sell FRTW to someone who doesn't need it. You'll be wasting your time. But, when a customer is looking to buy FRTW, make sure he knows you're in the FRTW business.
TIP #1: Tell contractors you sell it. Even your best customers are not aware of all the products you offer. Don't assume they know you handle

How to market fire retardant treated wood choosing a brand to sell ...why it's profitable for dealers.

FRTW. To help you with this, choose a supplier who will provide point-ofpurchase literature, banners and advertising tools, and will show you how to use them.
TIP #2: Check the spec. See which brand is specified and beware of the "or equal" clause. A substitution that fails to perform could become your problem. Before you substitute a brand, ask yourself these questions:
. Does this alternative product have the same warranty?
Does the product have the same water absorption (hygroscopicity) and corrosion properties?
. Does the product offer the same termite protection?
. Does the product have the same approvals?
Does the product have the same strength properties?
TIP#3: Askfor the order.
Let the customer know you want his business and you're ready to supply him. Wrap up the sale by suggesting other relevant merchandise such as saw blades, nails, adhesives and maybe even some CCA-treated wood.
TIP #4: Treat phone inquiries with respect.
For small orders of a product, it is not worth a builder's time to shop around; he'll usually stop at his favorite lumberyard and buy whatever is available. Large orders merit more of his effort. When a builder calls on the phone - for FRTW or any other material - he may be working on a major purchase. So, give him at least as much attention as you would devote to an in-person visit: talk about his project, ask what the spec says, ask for the order, and remind him of your services and terms. Focus on the call; don't divide your attention by trying to do some paperwork while you talk.
Wood that won't burn is a reality, and it presents an excellent sales opportunity for many contractor-oriented yards. FRTW is purchased by the same customers already being serviced, it extends the product line without requiring a large number of SKUs, and it can return an appealing profit.
THIS ARKANSAS school was built with roof trusses made of Dricon fire retardant treated lumber and topped with Dricon plywood sheathing. TO MEET building codes, FRTW must satisfy industrv criteria and be stamoed with confirming information.Decking, fencing, lattice...

ou can't control the weather but you know that primer must be applied promptly while the wood is clean and dry and the temperature is right. That's why we developed PALCO Prime.
You'll save time and money when you order our kiln-dried redwood and Douglas fir products with PALCO Prime.
Just as a building needs a solid foundation, painted wood needs a solid prime coat. Lumber needs to be primed on the front, back, ends and edges.
When wood siding, fascia and trim are primed at our mill, they're primed properly for long-lasting performance. With less handling you'll have fewer headaches, too-all the way from the mill to the jobsite.
So, don't worry about the weather. Order PALCO lumber with the PALCO Prime factory finish.

Hurricane Opal Pounds Southeastern Yards
Devastation and power outages plagued lumber companies in the Florida Panhandle in the wake of early October's Hurricane Opal.
Nevar Lumber & Supply, Nevar, Fl., suffered $50,000-$60,000 in damages when its exterior sheds' rafter and stud supports were destroyed and the metal roofing was blown off.
"This is the second time in two months we have had a hurricane within two miles of us," said mgr. Bobby Killingsworth. "In the first one, which caused $35,000 in damage, we took our licks, but this time we were not really happy about it."
The main store's shingles were blown off and the sheetrock also sustained wind and water damase.
"It will take six months to rebuild the sheds," said Killingsworth. "The first hurricane damaged the sheds, but this one destroyed them. The sheds will have to be torn down and rebuilt."
He predicts extensive repairs throughout the area will begin "once people get over the shock."
Nearby South Bay/Ace Hardware & Lumber Co., Santa Rosa Beach, Fl., escaped with minor damage to the lumber sheds estimated at $3.000$4.000.
"The grocery store next door was completed demolished," reported owner Ann Wallace. "We were lucky, it must have been our dilapidated building."
Pelican Adds Equity Partner, Sunbelt Gos. shops.
Backed by the addition of a new equity partner, 20-store Pelican Building Centers, Conway, S.C., has agreed to acquire l0-unit Sunbelt Cos. Inc., Greenville, S.C., for approximately $24.9 million.
Sunbelt's yards, with $94 million in annual sales, include Birmingham Lumber, Birmingham, Al.; Nashville Lumber, Nashville, Tn.; Asheboro Lumber, Asheboro, N.C.; Snow Lumber, High Point, N.C.; Moss Lumber, Washington, N.C.; two unit Griffin Lumber, Monroe, N.C., and three unit Jordan & Bradley Lumber, Columbus, Ga. Staffs and, at least for now, company names will be retained.
Anticipated to close by year's end, the deal also brings Pelican its first truss plant, in Nashville; three millwork facilities, and two hollow-metal
The acquisition was made possible by an investment in Pelican by McCown De Leeuw & Co., a private venture banking firm. MDC will provide Pelican with approximatley $60 million for acquisitions to help achieve its vision of a $500 million company with 50 store locations by the turn of the century.
In 1987, MDC led the formation of BMC West, the West's largest contractor-oriented chain, aiding its acquisition from Boise Cascade and its growth from 19 locations to 52.
Round Three In Canadian lmport Talks
Following a third meeting on softwood lumber trade between U.S. and Canadian governments, American industry officials met with U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor to evaluate the consultations' progress and identify remedies for allegedly subsidized Canadian lumber imports.
Among those representing the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports were Fred Stimpson, Gulf Lumber Co., Mobile, Al.; Steve Anthony, Anthony Timberlands, Bearden, Ar.; Hank Scott. Collum's Lumber Mill, Allendale, S.C.; Paul Dickert, Perry Lumber Co., Perry, Fl., and Ed Cone

MDC principal George McCown will serve as chairman of the Pelican Cos.' new board of directors, which will consist of Pelican shareholders, senior management and MDC affiliates. and Debbie Burns, Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association.
The Coalition maintains that subsidized Canadian imports have increased from 26.6Vo of the U.S. lumber market in 1991 to 36.5Vo in second quarter 1995, costing over 25,000 direct U.S. mill jobs.
The group reiterated that its only goal is to persuade Canada to adopt market-oriented timber pricing to replace provincial systems which price timber at a fraction of market value, artificially promoting Canadian employment at the expense of U.S. mills and their workers.
Using flashlights, the skeleton crew led customers into the store one at a time to buy supplies. "Lucky for us, our electricity was restored early. There is no telling how many people will be out of electricity for weeks," said Wallace.
Hurricane Opal was the third hunicane to strike the Panhandle this season. The storm, generating winds up to 150 mph, killed at least 15 people in the U.S., caused more than $1.8 billion in insured damage and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.
Hope Grows To 17 Locations
Hope Lumber & Supply Co., Broken Arrow, Ok., has added five more facilities, bringing the chain to 17 locations in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.

"We do have plans to continue to expand, mostly through acquisition," said Ron Stoots, vice presidentfinance. "Most of our growth has been over the last five to seven years."
Temple-Inland Forest Productsowned Big Tin Barn continues operating yards in Diboll, Tx.; Pineland, Tx., and Alexander, La.
McCoy's Shutters 7 Stores
McCoy's Building Supply Centers, San Marcos, Tx., is closing seven stores, in Little Rock, Ar.; Wichita Falls and West Lubbock, Tx.; Enid, Ok., and Gulfport, Pascagoula and D'Iberville, Ms.
Attributing the closures to overcrowded markets and inabilities to meet sales targets, the company continues operation of 103 stores in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and New Mexico.
McCoy's also announced a more aggressive scheduling of new store openings within the next three years, incorporating totally redesigned store layouts and storefront facades.

Did you miss the Nov. 2 forestry conference in Beaverton, Or., or the Nov. 7-8 wood residue conference in British Columbia? Not to worry, the meetings are still going on in cyberspace.
Those unable to physically attend the conferences will have access over the next few months to "virtual conferences" over the World Wide Web. The conference speakers were recorded and their audio presentations converted to digital files. A Web user is now able to click on a list of conference speakers and listen to one or all of them. The user can also follow the audio with a printed transcript.
By early December, users will be able to view a multimedia presentation similar to a slide show from their
computer monitor. Conference papers, charts and graphs will be posted on the Web page to allow users to collect additional data. Users can also post questions or comments.
"Virtual conferences offer an opportunity for users to obtain information from conferences without having to spend thousands of dollars for travel and time expenses," said Martin Desmond, president of ForestNet. "Our company will be pushing the technological envelope to make virnral conferences a cost-effective mechanism to transmit information in our increasingly busy world."
The meetings can be reached via the Internet at http://www.forestnet. com./log&saw.html and http://www. forestnet.com./westfor/wfca. html.

L-P Agrees To Siding Suit Settlements
Beleagured Louisiana-Pacific Corp. has settled a Florida class action suit over allegedly defective siding and proposed an up-to-$425 million settlement for claimants in other states.
More than 11.000 Inner-Seal siding customers have participated in class action suits against L-P in seven states, claiming that the product rots, swells, cracks and sprouts mushrooms when exposed to high moisture.
A U.S. District Court judge tentatively approved L-P's offer to pay up to $425 million to homeowners nationwide. The company would pay $275 million to settle claims during the first four years, then have the option of paying up to $50 million more annually during the next two years. After the seventh year, it could pay another $50 million or half of the remaining unpaid claims, whichever is greater.
Until now, if L-P agreed siding was faulty, it offered to pay twice the original cost of the damaged siding. Under the new settlement, claimants will be paid for materials, labor, painting and other replacement costs, which could come to three to four
Panel Producers Warned Of Overcapacity
Rising production capacity poses a major long-term marketing challenge to the North American structural wood panel indusfiy, APA-The Engineered Wood Association members were told at its 59th annual meeting.
"Here's the problem, simply stated: industry capacity is growing faster than market demand," said chairman Thomas Smrekar, Potlatch. "You can debate the numbers. But the best estimate says we'll add 8 to 10 billion feet of new production capacity by the year 2000. At the same time demand is expected to grow by only 2 to 3 billion feet."
Wrthzz new OSB mills planned or now under construction, pressure to compete for markets and operate profitably continues to intensify. Especially susceptible are plywood producers and those in the supplyconstrained West. "But it's not just a plywood problem," he added. "Nine billion feet of new OSB capacity will also force existing OSB plants to become rnore efficient."

APA's long-term strategic marketing plan, to be presented with funding options for final approval by APA trustees in Dec., could help close the demand-capacity gap, but Smrekar emphasized that "all of us better put this issue on the front burner because overcapacity is the issue of the hour."
The strategic plan identifies 4.6 billion sq. ft. of additional annual demand and outlines market development strategies and tactics to achieve
times the warranty payments.
The proposed settlement would cover all siding installed before Jan. l,1996, but would not affect separate consumer fraud investigations now under way in Washington, Oregon and Florida.
"Once they replace what they have to replace I think that line of business (Inner-Seal siding) will become history," projected analyst Mike Shea.
L-P has also been beefing up its management ranks by adding middle executives, including three managers to its 4O-facility Northern Division.
The company currently has no plans for a similar restructuring of the more-than-60-plant Southern Division since plants are geographically much closer together. Formerly under the control of Ronald Paul, Southern mill managers now report to acting gen. mgr. Gene Myers.
that goal. Of that volume, about 2.7 billion sq. ft. is targered in North American and 1.9 billion sq. ft. in foreign markets. Two to 3 billion sq. ft. is expected from overall economic growth and past industry promotion.
APA president David L. Rogoway addressed marketplace demands for product quality. He noted that rapid advances in production technology, raw material variations resulting from a changing resource base, the diversity of manufacturing processes, and the international trend toward process quality management all point to the need to "embark on a bold new path...that takes the best elements of different approaches." He said approaches may include the use of data generated in the mill laboratories, in-line testing and testing technologies that aren't yet fully developed.
Still, Rogoway noted, "production technology is only as good as the quality control and quality verification that go along with it."
About 550 attended the meeting Sept. 24-26 in Palm Springs, Ca. Reelected as regional trustees were Thomas Luthy, Weyerhaeuser Co.; Floyd Vike, Willamette Industries; John Galloway, Hood Industries, and Horst Sturmlinger, J.M. Huber Corp.
Appointed to the board as at-large trustees: Allen Ainsworth. C. Steven Clark, Donald Deardorff, Charles Grenier, Gene Meyers, Davis Mortensen, Dennis Spencer, James Sterrett and Jack Sweenv.
Acid Spill Evacuates Store
The second muriatic acid spill at a Scotty's in two months sent 10 people to the hospital and forced the evacuation of the Clermont, Fl., store.
The accident occurred Sept. l2 when as much as 40 gallons of the hydrochloric-type acid fell from a forklift inside the store. Employees attempted to contain the spill but were overcome by the fumes.
Ten victims, mostly employees, were treated and released later in the day after exposure to the acid's fumeg caused some breathing problems.
The store was temporarily clgsef, as firefighters used bicarbon4te pf soda to neutralize the cgryosive acid, which is typically used to clean concrete and stone surfaces.
No injuries were sustained at a similar muriatic acid mishap at the Leesburg, Fl., Scotty's July 18.

Plus Alaska and Hawaii
lf you sell into the West, or any part of it, we can help you get across your message.
The Merchant Magazine covers all 13 Western states (from New Mexico up through Montana, to California and the rest of the West Coast, plus Alaska and Hawaii). Founded in 1922, it has been the listened-to voice of the industry in the West for more than seven decades. Our longevity also proves we can get an advertiser's message to the important trade factors better than any other medium. And at the right price.

Our paid circulation is over 4,000 - a remarkable vote of confidence as these industry influentials receive at least four or five free
magazines monthly. The Merchant's paid circulation tells you clearly which magazine Westerners read.
The Merchant's unique blend of news, merchandising and marketing information, salted with personal news and notes and seasoned to the Westerners' taste reaches an audience of home centers and lumber dealers, as well as the wholesalers, distributors and jobbers that back them up. The Merchant, incidentally, is the sister publication of Building Products Digest.
You can count on reaching the market in the West through The Merchant Magazine. Call today, you'll be glad you did.
