The standard methods used to check out a company's credit are quite formalized and usually work well. But many times there's a lot more !o credit evaluation than numbers. Sometimes an inperson looksee is essential.
Ideally, the seller walks in unannounced to check out the buyer. This way he can observe the general appearance of the store or office. Things to look for include anything that appears shabby, run down or un-businesslike. Are the people pleasant, belpful and professional in their conduct? Does the office equipment consist of a mechanical comptometer left over from the Twilight Zone or are the computers neatly networked?
If a yard or warehouse is involved, walk through it to see if the general housekeeping is good. Is the building in good repair, are forklifts active and apparently well maintained? Are the workers briskly doing their jobs, or just sort of standing around?
After quizzing top management about credit
numbers, ask them about tbeir general conduct of the business. Get them to discuss areas such as inventory control, risk liability programs and Workers Comp. Also try and get lhs6 t6 lqlk about promotion and advertising, health plans, employee hiring/fuing policy and even succession plans. Ask them how they finance extra inventfry needed for rising sales. Experts tell us many managen don't have a clue as to how some of these important nanagement tools really work. If they are unsure or unknowing, it's a waning that the company may not be well enough operated to pay you for their purchases.
Talk to people at all levels of the company; the more the better. Listening carefully to casual conversations can often tell you a geat deal about the most important facet of any business: is employees.
When you're investigating credit, go for Oe nunbers lnst But don't forget that there's a lot more to business than just numbers.

Tornado Ravages Roper Bros.
Roper Brothers Lumber Co., Petersburg, Va., remains open, grappling to recover from a tomado which demolished most of its facilities.
The Aug. 6 twister destroyed several homes and five Roper Bros. buildings, including warehouses, offices and a manufacturing facility, but spared the main office and store.
One employee was seriously injured, Tim Eades, grandson of the chairman of the board. The 16-yearold part-timer was buried by a brick wall and had to be dug out by coworkers. He suffered a severe cut on his hand and was taken to the hospital with two other employees.
Since tornadoes are unusual in the are4 this one was a surprise and customers were in the store. Early in the aftemoon the sky suddenly turned an angry gray and the heavy rains came. The tomado struck and passed so quickly, many employees didn't have a chance to reach cover.
It sent cinder block walls flying. "I thought we were all going to die," said supervisor Abraham Lee.
"Our time clock stopped at l:43, that's what time it was when it touched down," said employee James Hunter. "It happened in a matter of seconds."
Crews worked late into the night using bobcats to clear debris from the 50-foot driveway to get to the street.
"We were real lucky," said Dennis Burrows, noting that a smaller tornado struck nearby about the same time, killing one man at a construction site and three others at a new Wal-Mart.
MB First To Win ISO Standard
MacMillan Bloedel Inc.'s wood products division, Pine Hill, Al., has become the first U.S. lumber and plywood operation to eirn registration to the prestigious international quality standard ISO 9002.
Applying to Oe company's growth of pine seedlings through production of lumber, plywood, linerboard and medium plus tall oil and turpentine, it is the broadest scope of regisradon for a single complex in the U.S. forest indusfy.
The Pine Hill complex, which employs 1,000 people and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, began its quest for ISO registration two years ago.
ISO is not an acronym, but a nick-
name derived from the Greek word isos, meaning equal. There are five related ISO standards, numbered 9000 through 9004, that have been adopted by 60 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan and the 12 members of the European Community.
ISO registration attests that a process has met quality management requirements set by the International Organization of Standardization. ISO 9000 standards for sawmills and treating plants are detailed in free booklets from the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, 4709 Scenic Hwy., Pensacola, Fl. 325M; (9M) 434-2611.

Selling the value of hardwood
I\EALERS not targeting hardwood l/floors, interior and exterior doors, millwork and cabinets as value-added products are losing sales.
Over half the 500 consumers in a Better Homes & Gardens magazine survey were considering hardwood for their next flooring purchase based on value, durability and nraintenance. Information such as this can help suppliers plan sales presentations with arguments that overcome reluctance.
"Knowledge is power and consumer research arms you with more
costs of $1.10 per square fool,270 square feet of hardwood flooring (30 square yard equivalent) will total $1,836. Over time, that's fewer dollars for greater durability, quality and fashion.
gant design," Dryden explains. "Value, which once meant the best price for a given product, today means the best quality for a given price."
Selling to this concept, a retailer should focus on quality and fashion,
power to close the sale," Janet Johnsen, hardwood flooring survey manager, pointed out.
Knowing consumers want hardwood floorings but may be put off by the perception they can't afford them, a dealer can stress that the total life cycle cost of hardwood flooring is competitive with flooring that costs less initially.
For example, Vicki Dryden, vice president of sales and marketing, Harris Tarkett, points out carpet at. $15.95 a square yard, padding at $1.95 per squarc yard and installation costs of $3 per square yard will cost $627 for 30 square yards and have to be replaced tlree times in 30 years for a toral of $1,881.
With a life span of at least 30 years (often 50, 75 or even 100), a cost of $5.70 per sqwue foot and installation
Examples such as these help the buyer view the purchase as a long term investment. The cost is the same over the years, but the durability, beauty and resale value of hardwood far exceed that of other types of flooring.
The same logic applies to hardwood kitchen and bath cabinets, doors, moulding and millwork. Statistics prepared by F. W. Dodge for the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association show consumers like solid hardwood cabinets. Hardwood doors also are coveted by many consumers, but some fail to weiglr their elegance, beautiful finishes and thermal efficiency against the initial price.
Hardwood millwork is also an exceptional buy when quality, durability and acceptance of stain are considered. The retailer who points out the advantages of these products helps the customer to decide that t]te extra money is well spent.
"Quality means not the newest, flashiest or priciest product to hir the market, but the one with quality craftsmanship, classic styling and ele-
not price, in sales presentations, Dryden suggests. She recommends:
O Showcasing hardwood in room settings.
C Displaying manufacturers' brochures and publications such as Hardwood Expressions published by the Hardwood Manufacturers Association.
O Utilizing point of sale materials such as catalogs, brochures, displays, banners, posters and videotapes.
O Reading home furnishings and design publications and keeping copies handy to share with customers.
O Creating a design scrapbook so customers can point out fayorite looks.
O Compiling a list of features and benefits of hardwood products and discussing pros and cons of each as they relate to a particular installation.
O Emphasizing hardwood's environmental benefits using National Hardwood Lumber Association's Tftz Forest Resource Fact Book to point out more hardwood timber is standing today than 40 years ago.

-TROWING up in a hardwood lJto-Uet yard i leamed a'irhmetic by tallying lumber. Once I got the hang of it, I thought it was simple. Like many o1trs1things, thougD, as I got older, tallying became morc complicated.
If you think tallyrng lumber is sinple, you could be mistaken, too. In the hadwood market today, lumber is measured in two ways - eitber based on a NET TALLY or a MILL TALLY. If you buy bardwood and you don't know Oe difference, you could be in for a big surprise.
Hardwood lumber i5 usuaily dried in a kiln. There, hot air and stean are circulated amoog the evenly seeardt€d tiers of lumber according to a cuefully devised schedule. In Oe drying process lumber loses much of its moisture and considerable weight. (See side bar) The geatest shrinkage @curs tangentielly - rcKlss the width of the hoards - and the least longitudirully - along the length. Tbe bord footage also shrinks from as little as 3Vo 1o as much as 87o of more, depending on Oe species.
A 'het tally" is a @unt of the rcual product you receive as it is measured after kiln drying. ln a net tally there is no addition for kiln drying shrinkage - the percentage of fmtage that is theoretically lost when hardwoods are dried.
A 'mill tally," on the oths ban4 is a measure of the lumber before it was drie4 and before it shrank in a kiln. It is a count of the footage that was originally sawn and NOT an account of how much footage you received.
A generation ago hardwood was cornmonly sold based on its measurement before kiln drying. Tbat meant that when one was tallying dried lumber, one had to add a percentage to account for the footage lost in the kiln. When tallying as little as 50 board feet at my father's lumber yard, we would add three feet for shrinkage. (We always noted the addition on the customer's copy of our piece tally.)

tardwood lumber
Dasy
By Gage McKinney Contributing Editor
Since then many people in the industry have decided the best way to ship hardwoods is by net tally. Many sawmills and distribution yards alike began shipping net footage and emphasizing the fact in their sales literature. They felt the customer should get exactly the footage he ordered. The State of California agreed with them and several years ago with many other states outlawed the practice of adding shrinkage to a tally.
Even in California, though, selling hardwoods on a'tnill tally" (meaning an accurate tally of the lumber before it was dried) is legitimate. There can be a cost savings involved because it saves the expense of tallying before and after drying.
Although mill tallies are legal, you have to be very careful when comparing the price of net tallied and mill tallied hardwoods. The price for mill tallied lumber will probably be less, but you will get less lumber. If you don't take that into account, your hardwoods could actually be costing a lot more than you realize.
There's one sure way to take all the guess work out of comparing prices between suppliers who may tally their lumber in different ways. Insist that every supplier quote your requirements based on a net tally. That way you'll always be comparing apples with apples. That way when you inspect incoming shipments the amount of lumber you receive should be exactly the amount shown on the bill of lading and invoice.
A salesperson may say that he can offer you a better value based on a mill rally, and he may be conect in a specific instance. But in the long run I believe a net tally will be more accurate while eliminating costly errors and possible misunderstandings. And since you're the customer, you can have it that way.
Some may disagree, but I would like to see the industry adopt the net tally as the standard. That's because it is the most accurate and credible
method, and it gives priority to the needs of the consumer rather than the needs of the manufacturer or the sup- plier. It makes tallying simple enough for even a school boy to understand.

A strategic "trade up" plan will result in a significantly stronger year-end dollar profit for you without any change in cosb, retails or margin structure. Remember the old adage: "We take profits, not margins, to the bank."
An effective trade up stmtegy consists of two simple elements:

Strategic plan-o-gram placement: Assuming that your fastener margin structure, like most, is consistent across the product line within 2-3Vo, lov need only focus on high ticket items to effectively select your highest dollar profit producers. In package fasteners, high count blister packs typically offer the most profit per sell. In bulk, bulk boxed offers higher profit than bulk loose. Developing a strategic plan-o-gram focusing on selling more high profit fasteners is simple.
First, for packaged fasteners, ensure that the top selling 50Vo of your low count blister pack is also available in high count blister packs. Then, rather than create the traditional groups of:

strategy clearly rewards the consumer (via a quantity discount) for the purchase of high @unt packages versus low count or single count packages.
Your pricing strategy for fastener packages is probably already in place. Your manufacuurr/supplier should be rewarding you for purchasing higb qufltity packs and most likely you are passing that discount on to your customers. However, your customen probably ir€n't malring the on-site calculations necessary to realize tbey're getting a quantity discount.

The purpose of the profit set grouping is to facilitate uading up. By positioning the higber profit" high count item next to the lower profit low count item, you create the desired comparison and hopefully the desired impulse to buy up. When high count and low count items are at separate ends of your display, the desired result is a defmite long shot.
For bulk fasteners, trading up is even more common in today's bulk sets than in packaged sets. Simply stated, a profit set in bulk is one that places bulk quantity boxes next to the
The secret to a successful pricing strategy lies as much in the conveyance of the quurtity discount as the discount itself. A common and effective way to oonvey your discount message is through on-pack product announcements, usually in the fomr of str buns sating the type of discount tbe particular package reflects.
An uncommon (at least to the hardwarc indrsfy) way of conveying this discount message is via consumerfriendly shelf tags or CF Tags. In the grocery and &ug industries, where they are standard, CF Tags have proven to be successful in promoting trade up. There

are two types of CF Tags: the single tag and the double tag. Both are illustrated at left.
-The strongest advantage to using CF Tags is obvious in the double tag illusration. In our example, the consumer who shops drywall screws can quickly see the 50 count package of 1"x6 screws is less than halfprice on a unit-to-unit basis. This unit price difference may not entice the customer who needs 10 units to trade up' but there is evidence showing that the shopper needing more than 10 is likely to trade up !o the 50 count size.
In summary, if an approxima@ly 40Vo profit increase, an enhanced pricing image and shopping ease in your fastener aisle are among your objectives, you'll want to implement your version of a profit set today.

Top off profits with corrugated panels
tflflE LIGHT weight and high dur- I ability of comrgated panels make them an ideal add-on sale for d-i-y projeca. Or, marketed correctly, they can become the project themselves.
Used primarily for their color- and light-transmitting properties, the translucent fiberglass and plastic panels are a perfect way to finish off a patio, deck, porch, carport, awning, storage shed or backyard greenhouse, serve as fencing or skirting, or illuminate bams, metal buildings and commercial greenhouses.
The amount of light and solar energy txansmitted depends upon tbe color of the panel. Dark panels can block nearly all of the sunlight, while clear greenhouse panels transmit neady l00vo. Panels that transmit about 50Vo of the light come in colors like smoke (an aesthetic way to cover a pool) and white (for privacy).
The most popular are the 2-ll2 corrugated, usually 26" wide so the end corrugations overlap on the rafters. Strndard lengths are 8', 10'and l2'.
Traditional fi berglass panels usual-
ly weigh 4-5 oz. per square foot" with sturdier 6 oz. often available. Lighter panels cost less, but require more understructure to meet building codes. Panels providing roof skylights and perimeter lighting in famr and industrial buildings come in 5, 6 and 8 oz.
Sturdy and affordable, fiberglass panels capitalize on the most economical lighting sour@, the sun.
Although fiberglass may do the job, it can be difficult to work wirh

and may shatter or leave fiberglass slivers in your hand. About seven years ago manufacturers introduced an alternative: PVC (polyvinylchtoride) building sheets. Stronger and more attractive, they're a step up in quality and in price. "PVC and fiberglass are completely different resins," said Elizabeth Benham, Sel Group International. *PVC is more consumer friendly. It's flexible, so it's easier to transport and work with. It's not susceptible to breakage and weathers about the same as fiberglass. Lightweight fiberglass is a litrle less expensive, but PVC is competitive with heavier fiberglass."
But nothing is perfect. PVC can break and get brinle at low temperatures and soften in extreme heat. After a few years, its UV resistance begins to weaken. Palram subsidiary Suntuf USA produces PVC in white opaque to minimize the effects of the weather on the panels. They also runufacnrre even tougher panels, made of virtually unbreakable corrugated polycarbonate. Though twice

Siding Continues Steady Climb
Demand for siding products is forecast to inqease 4.7Vo armually through 1997, due to a rejuvenated U.S. construction market, according to the Freedonia Group.
Pent-up demand for new housing and continuing repair and replacement will fuel gains in the residential sector, which accounts for about 70Vo of siding demand. Siding growth will also reflect an aging stock of existing homes, expanding d-i-y activity and the continued development of siding products witlt enhanced performance, aesthetic appeal and durability characteristics.
Prices for siding products will increase well below the general rate of inflation due to changes in product mix, as low-cost vinyl supplants metal and wood, and decelerating market growth opportunities, which are creating a more price-driven environment. As a result, dollar value gains should only slightly exceed the predicted 6.87o annual unit growth.
Among siding materials, vinyl will show the best gains over the intermediate to long-term. Plastic and metal panel siding will enjoy above-average growth, gaining market share from other siding materials.
The South Atlantic, Mountain and Pacific regions will offer the best growth opportunities for siding, benefiting from a healthy pattern of growth in population, employment, business formations and economic activity in general.
Residential Roofing Sales Growth
Residential roofing demand will increase to 130 million squares by 1997, but taper off as housing strrts drop after that year.
An aging housing stock which will require new roofs and continued advances in product design and performance will contribute to the growth, The Freedonia Group reports. The replacement/improvement segment of the residential roofing market will use 86 million squares in 1997 compared to 44 million squares for new housing.
Growth opportunities for roofing will be best in the South Atlantic, Mountain and Pacific regions.

The truth is, only the forest products industry relies on a wholly renewable resource -- wood -- to make products. Of course, that renewability depends on responsible forest management. For decades, Willamette Industries has led the industry in caring for its forests. Reforesting or replanting every harvested acre and never harvesting more than it grows, Willamette's sustained yield will continue to produce wood at or above current levels. Willamette takes great

pains to meet or exceed all environmental requirements, balancing wildlife concerns while assuring renewability. Conservation is further enhanced with Willamette's advanced manufacturing methods which eliminates waste by using every scrap of wood and wood fiber. With Willamette's sound forestry practices, wood will remain a viable resource. So, before you consider the pointedly exaggerated claims of alternative building materials, consider the renewable resource."$zssd.

'Assemble all the materials for you customers and everything needed for a cerrain dimension covered pa.tio for, say, $499.99. Projects are less prie competitive. Some stores, like &4 Lumber, offer their decks in fu€e different designs, sort of goo( bett€r, besr You can advertise corrugated panels tbe same way."
Other retailers have constructed sample awnings or greenhouses. Some have built small displays inside the store above tbeir racks.
Finally, make sure your selection of comrgated panels is easy ro find and tbat accessories are at hand. Althongh installation only requiras ordinary band tools, add-on items include comrgated, rib-shaped redwood filler strips, special aluminun nails, wat€fproofing sealant and aluminum flashing. Are your hardwood products certified?
f\ERTIFICATION is a much spoVken-about concern today. But what does it mean when applied to hardwood products harvested from tropical forests?
Basically, certification is an assurance that a product has been produced from a source which practices sustainable forestry. Sustainable forestry is the management of forest resources to ensue tlat harvesting will not diminish the benefits to future generations. It requires the protection of wildlife, water, timber resources and soil, all in perpetuity. This is most desirous. We must ensure that our effect on the forest reserves is a positive one.
It's easy to understand the appeal of certifying the sustainability of ropical timber and timber products' origin. Producers, marketers and consumers want quick, easy answers to complex problems. We all want to feel we're contributing to the planet's overall well being, not its destruction.
Certifrcation might be the answer !o our concerns, if we could trust the certifying agency and be assured its sundards and oiteria are appropriate. But is there one internationally recognized agency that uses appropriate, universally accepted criteria for its forestry management judgmens? So far, unfortunately, lhe answer is no.
At last count, there are at least a dozen private businesses that purport to be able to certify sustainability. The fees charged by these groups are quite high, so we must ask who is going to pay these expenses. Each group also has is own individual criteria and standards. Most of these individually-developed standards were
By Tom Wllson Intemational Spec'ialties, Inc. Germantown, Tn.
created without input from the m4ia producing industries that have Oe actual hands-on experience in Oe forests. And any standard expected to reliably judge any industry function must take into account the greardivasity of conditions under which the industry members in various parts of Oe wuldmustwak.
Yet there are such standards, wi&ly accepted and reoognized. The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), established under the auspices of the United Nations, bas developed the most universally recognized standards for sustainability, with involvement of scientists, consumers and producers. However, o date, none of tb major certifiers us€s these standards.
There is hope. One recognition program, in is finalization stages, is based on ITTO guidelines. Developed under tbe auspices of the Tropical Forest Foundation, lhe "Tropical Forest Management Recognition Program" is chaired by Dr. Duncan Poore, an eminent ropical fsesr specialist. TFF's board of directors is comprised of representarives from dl interested sectors - scientific, academic, conservation and industry. Chairman of Oe board is Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, the Smithsonian Institute's asst. secretary for extemal affain.
The TFF program is not certification, but rather a voluntary effort to advance the rate at whicb tropical forests are well managed. It incorporates Oe key elements necessary !o succeed in reaching ITTO's Target 2000. The Target 2000 progran sas as is goal that dl internationally traded tropical wood and wood products are to be sourced from well managed, sustainable sources by the year 2000.

What should you do? Because of the many questions about "certification" and the non-involvement of large producers in these various certification schemes, it seems impractical to insist upon buying only products certified as coming from a "sustainable source." Such insistence would eliminate most commercial supply. More importantly, begin by insisting on adherence !o the ITTO criteria and support ofTarget 2000.

initely have an effect on the forestsa most negative one. If you stop buying their products, the producers will not have the necessary income to finance the continued improvement of their forest management and the chances of the forest lands being converted to alternative uses increase dramatically. You should continue to buy the products you need, but question your supplier about their origin. Responsible importers who are members of the International Hardwood Products Association (IHPA) endorse
the Target 2000 program and support the work of the Tropical Forest Foundation. If you have any questions about the advisability of purchasing a product from the tropical forest, ask your supplier if he is a member of IHPA. Also ask him about his commiunent to favor producers who practice good forestry management.

GOTNG METRIC
In the August edition on page 13, I noted an article regarding metrication. Metric sizes for softwood lumber will be included in the American Lumber Standard when it is published later Ois year. Copies of the standard sizes with conventional units and their metric equivalents are available from the American Lumber Standard Committee.
Incidentally, I know of no proposal to call a 2x4 - 50x100. Actual metric sizes are to be used, i.e..38x89.
