Kentucky firm shows hardwood at its best

The 50-year-old Louisville, Ky., company specializes in custom millwork although it stocks 27 species of top grade, kiln dried hardwood, including exotics, for their trade, mainly cabinet shop customers, and manufactures moulding for home centers including Lowe's. The company recently received an Architectural Woodwork Institute award of excellence for architectural woodwork in the Kentucky Home Mutual Life Insurance Co. building in downtown Louisville.

Founded by Henry E. Brewer, the company is family owned and operated. His. sons, C. Eugene Brewer and Gerald F. Brewer, are president and vice president/treasurer, respectively. Mike Brewer, sales and marketing, is the third generation to be active in the business.

Although the company began its life in a converted horse stable, it now occupies a modern plant near the Louisville airport. A staffof 45 is capable with the aid of the latest equipment of producing virtually any item of millwork imaginable with meticulous attention to detail. From estimates to installation, the company prides itself on being "dedicated to providing the best: the best product and service available," said C. E. Brewer.

Projects completed by the firm range from fine residences, churches, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings to restorations. The interior of the Newport and Nantucket Clipper Ships which operated along the Atlantic Coast are examples of their work as is the old State Capital restoration in Frankfort, Ky. The General Jackson Show Boat at Opryland sports a beautiful handrail produced by Louisville Lumber & Millwork. Regardless of whether it is a mansion in California or the clubhouse at Churchill Downs, Louisville, the company presents hardwood at its best.
