It's Showtime!
Generally considered the hottest new trade show on the circuit, the North American Wholesale Lumber Association's Traders Market is a good example of the evolving world of industry trade shows.
Once upon a time, dealer and wholesaler associations took a full week for their annual convention, now it's often only four days and the new gatherings, like the Traders Market, are three-day affairs.
Recognizing this, our October issue will feature a full-color supplement devoted to the Traders Market, reviewing the front line buyer and seller format that promises to draw 1,500 people to this third annual at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, November 5-7. Unlike the dealer shows. wholesalers will be there as attendees, rather than exhibitors.
Historically, association meetings were annual, relaxed conclaves that were as much social as business. Then the trade show became part of the convention. Later, business seminars and minishows were held at various times of the year. Companies held their own product shows. Then

the co-ops began their buying shows, impinging upon traditional association turf. Today, many state dealer associations hold successful shows. though some are smaller than l0 or 20 years ago.
Time is the factor that comes into play in assessing the show situation. Vendors usually greet new shows with, "Oh no, not another show. We're already maxed out in both time and budget." As the pace of American business moves more rapidly, the before, during and after and the costs involved weigh heavily on any potential participant.
More and more, both vendor and showgoer want a situation where business can be done. Fewer of the meet-and-greet, howdy-and-the handshake shows are retaining their full complement of visitors. No one seems to have the time: the demands of business to be profitable are unrelenting.
The marketplace will be the final arbiter of how many and what kind of trade shows will survive and prosper. But as NAWLA's Traders Market has shown, a shortened format at the right price, conducive to business, will still draw a big crowd.

Universal Expanding Throughout South
Universal Forest Products is increasing its manufacturing capacity of value-added lumber products by opening four new facilities and relocating one existing operation.
Due to growing demand in the Dallas/Fort Worth market, the company will relocate its Carrollton, Tx., roof and floor truss operation from a leased facility to a newly purchased 67,000sq. ft., 7-acre location in Arlington, Tx.
Universal purchased a site in Hope, Ar., to build a new remanufacturing
Pre-Drilled Studs Suit Fails
A lawsuit attempting to reclassify predrilled lumber as exempt from the U.S./Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement has been dismissed by the Court of International Trade.
In February 1997, U.S. Customs had ruled that studs with a small drilled hole should be classified as "joinery or carpentry" and not "lumber," placing them outside of the 1996 quota treaty. Five months later, Customs filed to revoked its decision, sparking the lawsuit by importers of Canadian lumber.
plant to produce lumber products for the d-i-y and manufactured housing markets, as well as specialty wood packaging products for industrial users.
Recently acquired Shoffner Industries will add pre-assembled wall panels to its existing roof and floor truss products with the opening of new wall panel operations in Hohenwald, Tn., and Mebane, N.C.
Universal also opened a remanufacturing facility in Laerma, Mexico, to manufacture lumber products for export to the U.S. hevious activities in the country were limited to sales and distribution of lumber products from a sales office in Mexico City, now consolidated in Laerma.
Concurrently, Universal sold its under-performing Yardline division to privately held Handy Home Products, North America's largest manufacturer of r-t-a wooden outdoor strucfures.

wood reached an all-time high in 1996 of 680 million sq. ft. (3/8"), a l4.5%o increase from the previous year. Growth in the last three years has been at a late of l5%o per year.
Retail sales of treated plywood now account for over TOVo of its total demand-boats, permanent wood foundations and fire retardant treated plywood make up the remaining 307o.
Material Handling
More plywood is also being used by material handling professionals as they search for cost-effective alternatives to solid lumber pallets and higher-cost plastic bins and containers.
Benefits for pallet users include increased durability and improved rack resistance compared with traditional wood and plastic designs, and better surface friction and repairability compared with plastic pallets. For bin and container users, plywood also offers greater strength and product protection.
APA forecasts the rate of growth in some industrial markets, including paneldeck pallets and containers, to rise significantly over the next few years.
industrial accounts by allowing customers to specify plywood that better matches their individual requirements. Traditionally, those accounts have relied on more common standard grades.
Furniture Frames
Specialty grade panels are also making their way into the upholstered furniture frame market where plywood provides superior strength and fastener holding ability than more conventional hardwood lumber frames. Whether furniture manufacturers use CNC routers or band saws, plywood can be cut much more efficiently than lumber, providing higher material yields and more uniform parts.
APA forecasts the rate of growth in some industrial markets, including panel-deck pallets and containers, to rise significantly over the next few years. "Currently less than lOVo of pallets are manufactured with plywood," said Tom Kositzky, APA industrial market coordinator. "Each percentage point increase translates into roughly 100 million sq. ft. of new demand."
Many plywood producers, and some distributors servicing the industrial market sector, are offering specialty-grade industrial-use panels specially tailored to end-use conditions.
Upgrades in panel lay-ups include tighter cores for greater screw and nail holding, and increased use of facesanded panels for manufacturing overlays.
Using APA's Industrial Panel Selection Guide, some wholesalers and retailers are servicing larger
Upholstered furniture manufacturers consume about 2.5 billion bd. ft. of softwood and hardwood lumber and about 400 million sq. ft. (3/8") of structural panels. "With greater performance and much higher raw material yield, we see specialty plywood continuing to take share from lumber in this growing market," Kositzky said.
MDO/HDO
In addition to specialty grade plywood, some big box retailers are stocking more Medium Density Overlay (MDO) plywood to service smaller sign shops and do-it-yourselfers.
Markets that have and continue to provide some dealers with higher margin opportunities include High Density Overlay (HDO) plywood widely used in commercial construction for concrete formwork, some overlaid plywood sidings and specialty panels for smaller cabinet manufacturers.
With industrial market growth and steady residential demand, North American softwood plywood is securing a long-term, profitable future for dealers, wholesalers and distributors.

OSBNorth America '98 tr
THE figures may look unimpresI sive, with tamer increases than previous years and even some decreases in production among North America's top OSB manufacturers. But the stability of 1997 is a major contributing factor to the current rejuvenation of the OSB market.
1998 is the year that OSB demand finally started catching back up with production, and prices began to rise accordingly. A commodity primarily used in new home construction. OSB is again in high demand, bolstered by low interest rates, a robust economy and a better-than-expected housing market. For the first time in years, OSB prices have caught up with plywood.
During the early- and mid-1990s, manufacturers kept building nerv plants, but demand couldn't keep up. sending prices plummeting. But there was a silver lining: low prices for OSB over the last two years did entice traditional plywood users to give OSB a try, and many seem to be making the switch permanent.
During the drought, many producers stopped expanding or even cut back production, and fewer new plants are coming on line.
Yet decreased production in a weak market doesn't always make sense for individual plants. "You

4ways to be a proactive executive
By Clark Colvin
them. Result: your managers will see for themselves that you are personally committed to making your company Number One with the people you do business with.
L.rrotr 2. Proactive executives are known by their managers.
fiNCE upon a time, before he was \-f c.e.o. of Scott Paper and Sunbeam, Al Dunlap, the famous/ notorious turnaround consultant, was interim c.e.o. of ANI, the largest engineering company in Australia.
After he had fired most of ANI's senior management, sold off branch offices and warehouses and cut head office staff by 907o, Dunlap decided to visit one of the company's out-of-town steel mills. He was met at the airport by a company executive. They walked outside and climbed into a fire-enginered Ferrari. "Either this guy is independently wealthy," Dunlap thought, "or this company is nuts." Upon inquiry, Dunlap was told the Italian sports car was "a company car."
Dunlap then asked the executive for a tour of the mill. "Fine," said the man, "but I don't do tours." As they drove away, the ANI executive related all the other things he didn't do. Dunlap added one more item to the list: "You don't collect paychecks here anymore." He sold the Ferrari, too.
In this anecdote. which is described in Mean Business: How I Save Bad Companies & Mqke Good Companies Great, Dunlap put his finger on a major problem in the business world today: too many executives are more concerned with the appearances of power than with the proactive exercise
of it. Any executive who is more interested in flashy cars (or Armani suits, expensive wines and membership in exclusive golf clubs) than in rolling up his sleeves and getting down to work is an executive who has his priorities all wrong.
To get ahead and stay ahead in the current super-competitive business environment, an executive needs to be proactive. What are the characteristics of a proactive executive? He: thinks positively, but doesn't underestimate the challenges he faces;
. is realistic, but is prepared to "think outside the box" in order to develop winning strategies, and
. takes the time to consider all his alternatives before he acts.
A
proactive executive
always has a Plan B ready to go at a moment's notice.
As a management consultant specializing in turnarounds, I have often, like Al Dunlap, been called on to help put a company back on its feet. Over the years I've picked up some lessons on how to be a proactive executive:
L"rror, 1. Proactive executives lead, and they lead by example.
"Do as I say, not as I do" is not going to win the hearts and minds of the people who work for you. Exhorting your managers to work harder or work smarter is effective only if you follow your own good advice. If, for example, you want to make your company more "customeroriented," be proactive: bring customers to the office. show them around and get your people talking to
The first opinion that is formed of an executive's intelligence is based on the quality of the men and women he has around him. When they are competent and loyal he will always be considered wise. because he has been able to recognize their competence and to keep them loyal. But when they are otherwise, he is always open to adverse criticism, because his first rnistake has been in the choice of his managers. Therefore, be proactive and hire the best people you can afTord. Encourage and reward them. You'll look like a genius for having brought them on board.
L.rror, 3. Proactivc executives arc tough rvhen they need to be. but don't wallow in blood.
Several years ago, I was interim c-e.o. of a family-owned three-yard retail lumber operation in South Carolina. The family was particularly attached to the oldest yard and couldn't bring themselves to close it despite mounting losses. As soon as I was put in charge, I shut it down. A f'ew tears were shed, but the company survived and today it's as healthy as a trout.
L"rron 4. Proactive executives are always prepared for trouble.
Proactive executives need to be eternally optimistic. At the same time, they should never allow themselves to be caught off guard when the roof caves in, as it sometimes does on both companies and careers. Many executives. like the rest of the human race. tend not to anticipate a reversal of fortune when things are going well. For some reason, the companies-and the executives-that fly highest seem to hit the worst turbulence. Therefore, a proactive executive always has a Plan B ready to go at a moment's notice.
I'll bet that Al Dunlap, who has tasted failure as well as success. doesn't agree to take on an assignment before first planning his escape route. I wonder if it involves jumping into a red Fenari.

Wood trusses top the
engineered wood market
NGINEERED wood quiz: What's the most widely produced engineered wood building component for home construction?
- I-joists?
- Laminated veneer lumber?
- Glued laminated beams?
The answer: none of the above. The correct response is prefabricated roof and floor trusses.
About 4.5 billion bd. ft. of lumber was used for trusses last year. And 6OVo of these trusses were built with southern pine lumber, because of its strength and durability.
Trusses have steadily increased their market share over
Fewer architects and owners
want low-pitch roofs these days.
the past two decades. It's estimated that 257o of all retail building material retailers provide trusses for their contractor customers.
Roof trusses provide reliable, factory-engineered wood building components that can usually be installed faster than conventional framing. Floor trusses offer the advantage of high-strength framing and open webs, which make it possible to run ductwork, plumbing and wiring throughout the structure without drilling holes.
Architects, engineers, retailers and builders report that roof and floor trusses have benefited from two relatively recent design trends-the more dramatic visual impact of taller profile roofs, and the increase in "bonus rooms" for extra living space in the area that was formerly the attic.
Taller, Steeper Trusses
As architects reach for steeper profiles in custom and multifamily homes, roof elevations are becoming unique and distinctive. Many building designers are turning to taller, more complex southern pine trusses to create higher roofs that give structures a more visible signature or shape. This is particularly true in roofs with multiple dormers, hips and valleys.
In the past, trusses with a 4ll2 pitch were the nonn on many jobs. Today, more designers are calling for 8ll2 to
10/12 pitch trusses.
Truss experts report that fewer architects and owners want lowpitch roofs these days. With the computer engineering and hightech equipment in the truss plant, it's easier to specify the higher profile trusses.
According to Kirk Grundahl, executive director of the Wood Truss Council of America, "Owners and architects like the variety of interior ceiling profiles like coffered or tray ceilings that are achieved with steeper pitched trusses." He sees continued growth in the taller trusses, even though their height gometimes causes manufacturers to build trusses in two pieces to deal with shipping restrictions.
Attic Trusses Greate New Space
Wood roof truss manufacturers are also capitalizing on the increasing popularity of the attic truss. It's like finding "bonus space" upstairs for bedrooms, storage, home offices or heating and air conditioning equipment.
Builders and designers note that the attic area is often wasted in new homes that are framed with conventional trusses or rafters. The solution is an attic truss that has a square, box-shaped opening down the center, between the top and bottom chords of the truss. This square opening typically receives a subfloor and wall board to become a finished room.
The amount of open attic space for a "bonus room" depends on the roof pitch and the truss span. For example , a 4o-ft. attic truss with a l0ll2 pitch provides more space than a 30-ft. truss with a 6112 pitch. Some of the larger trusses provide 7 to 8 ft. ofheadroom down the center.
When the steep attic trusses are used for a bonus room over the garage, the extra strength of the southern pine truss makes it possible to span the width of a two-car garage without any intermediate posts or columns.

yourselfers, and retail salespeople can do their part to help first-timers make it a successful one.
Their very first task is one of the most difficult: choosing the wallpaper pattern. Provide sample books which include an array of patterns and decorating ideas.
For a d-i-yer's first job, suggest moderately priced papers with a "short repeat." The pattern repeat is noted on the back of each sample. For example, for wallcoverings with a 6-inch repeat, a sheet of paper will
have to be moved up or down no more than 6 inches for perfect alignment.
To help figure the number of rolls needed for a room, calculate the total wall area (square footage, or the length of each wall to the nearest foot, added together, then multiplied by the ceiling height). Divide this area by the roll coverage to calculate the number ofrolls needed.
It's a good idea to have extra wallpaper for a firstjob in case a few misguided cuts are made.
In addition to the wallpaper, d-iyers will also need:
a drop cloth, . premixed wallpaper adhesive and a brush to apply the wallcovering, or a sponge and water tray if the wallpaper is pre-pasted,
. plumb line to create a straight, level guide fbr applying the first sheet of wallpaper,
For
novices, suggest
they undertake as their first wallpapering project a back bedroom where they can practice using the tools and fussing with the wallpaper.
a smoothing brush to remove air bubbles and creases.
a seam roller to seal the edges in place,
wide blade putty knife, and household scissors, small pointed scissors, razor blade cutter and straight edge for trimming the paper.
For novices, suggest they undertake as their first wallpapering project a back bedroom where they can practice using the tools and fussing with the wallpaper. When they feel confident, they can hang paper in the front where everyone will see their work.
How-to clinics are a perfect venue for teaching homeowners how to wallpaper as well as instilling the confidence required to give it a try. Cover the basics, as well as finer points, such as how to fit wallpaper around window and door mouldings by cutting the overlapping edges at a 45" angle, and how to cut paper around an outlet or switch plate cover by cutting out an "x," snipping the excess "v"-shape pieces and trimming the opening-after turning off the electricity.

Millwork Facility Expands
Glen Oak Lumber & Milling has expanded its Somerset, Ky., hardwood millwork manufacturing plant, qllowing it to begin producing clear-grade solid lineal poplar and increase production of paint-primed fingerjointed mouldings.
The company increased the facility to more than 56,000 sq. ft., and added a warehouse that accommodates 2.5 million ft. of finished inventory and rough lumber storage. An additional fingerjoint line plus a second shifl production team has significantly increased Prime Poplar output.
Installed were an additional fingerjoint line plus a new selective rip system for solid lineal poplar. "The new selective rip allows us to get a greater percentage of clear grade mix," explains Glen Oak president Bo Smith. "We can now produce more solid blanks and offer traditional moulding patterns in both fingerjoint and solid poplar."
Depot Ups Installations
Home Depot is contemplating an expansion of its installed sales business.
In recent months, the chain has been experimenting with a pilot program, At Home Services, at about 100 of its nearly 700 stores, mostly in Southern California and the Southeast.
Initially limited to roofing, vinyl siding and vinyl replacement windows, the program likely will be expanded to other products and regions.
Sears, Roebuck & Co. veteran Charles Berk is heading the program.

Window of Opportunity
The sign read, "This Property is Condemned," but that didn't stop Virginia real estate broker and developer Jim Woltz.
Recently, Woltz purchased a pair of three-story brick apartment buildings in historic downtown Roanoke. His plan was to r?novate the 16,000 sq. ft. complex's one- and two-bedroom units into luxury corporate apartments. Once the pride of the neighborhood, the complex featured rooms with I I' ceilings, crown moulding and heart of pine floors. Yet as of late, the complex had fallen on hard times.
Among the challenges he faced was locating historically accurate replacement windows for the complex's 187 windows. "Initially, the state said that we couldn't replace the windows," he recalls. "We had to fix them. The windows were in terrible shape, almost destroyed." And, the cost of replacing them "would have made the project financially unfeasible."
Not willing to concede defeat, he did some research and came across MW Manufacturers, Inc. The Rocky Mount, Va.-based company manufactured a vinyl-clad sash replacement system that reportedly perfectly matched the look of the historic structure's original windows.
Intrigued, Woltz allowed MW to install the sash replacement system as a test in one window. The result was a unanimous approval of the system from everyone involved in the project, including the state, whose approval led Woltz to receive a $250,000 investment tax credit.
He ended up with a system that was low maintenance, energy efficient and visually harmonious with the original.

Union Pacific Decentralizes
Union Pacific Corp. is restructuring its railroad management, moving away from the centralization that has exacerbated service problems for over a year.
The railroad has been reorganized into three regions, each with its own vice president and management team.
During the 1990s, the nation's largest railroad has been relocating operating managers and train dispatchers to its rail headquarters in Omaha, Ne., using technology to link with field operations. But, in light of continuing problems from last year's acquisition of Southern Pacific, "the railroad is too large to operate from one location," admitted a UP spokesperson.
Ace Enlists Chilean Giant
Ace Hardware has allied itself with Santiago, Chile-based Sodimac S.A., the largest home improvement chain in South America.
With annual sales of $700 million. Sodimac operates 43 retail stores up to 115,000 sq. ft. in Chile, four in Columbia and one under construction in Peru. They will begin carrying Ace
brand products and be serviced by Ace's Tampa, Fl., retail support center.
l-Joists Production Growing
Despite low-to-moderate lumber prices in first quarter 1998, builders continue switching to wood I-joists in record numbers, according to recent production figures from APA-The Engineered Wood Association.
Volume increases in the use of wood I-joists continue to outpace new housing starts. "At this rate, we could see the market share grow from 33Vo in 1997 to 4OVo this year," says Craig Adair, APA mgr. of market research.
In the first four months of 1998, Ijoist output was strong and lumber prices low "These numbers indicatc that builders are willing to pay a little more up-front for a product that is easier to install and provides better performance," he says. "And when lumber prices drop we don't see a move to switch back. Experience indicates that builders who use I-joists two or three times are unlikely to return to traditional lumber framing materials."
APA forecasts l-joist production to top 760 million linear ft. in 1998 and nearly I billion in the year 2000.
Fighting Employee Turnover
One downside to the strong economy for U.S. retailers is high turnover among store associates, the worst in 25 years, according to MOHR Retail Learning Systems.
"There are no quick fixes for high turnover," says MOHR's Herb Cohen. "Training helps and so do incentives. But the best place to start is recruitment and selection. Because the job market is so competitive, many retailers find themselves settling for whomever they can get, even though these may be the individuals least likely to stick with the job."
According to Cohen, the most important factor is the attitude of top management. "Unfortunately, they' ve considered associates as a disposable commodity seldom worth training and peripheral to creating the shopping experience," he says. "What top management needs to keep in mind is that without employee satisfaction, it's impossible to have customer satisf'action."
Management should find ways to make associates feel competent and then regularly reinforce that confidence, he suggests.
