Grade Violations In Georgia

Green hem-fir lumber that has been ripped and not regraded is being sold to builders for houses in metro Atlanta Ga., the Consrucdon Suppliers Association reports.

According to Ebv Goodroe, this is a double infraction. First, the building code clearly states any lumber incorporated into a structure must have a l9Vo or less moisture content. Secondly, grading rules state the grade applied to dimension lumber is lost once the lumber is rip@.

The association plans a three prong solution to the problem. Onq they will advise all members of CSA and the Atlanta Homebuilder's Association of the problem. Two, when evidence of violations is reported to them, they will notify building code officials. ThrEe, they will begin an educational blitz for building code officials in metro Atlanta.

A long range solution is scheduled for the 1995 legislature with amendment of a 1990 bill banning a grade on mill stampe/ lumber. The amendment would require obliterating any grade on ripped lumber and selling the wood as ungraded unless it is regraded by a licensed gmder.
