Hey, man, you got any lumber?

AIORE layout is one of the more interesting -lphases of the retail part of this business as it involves a rich mix of science and art. It's also an area where the art part (read gut feeling) can be far more critical than a logical numbers ap-

proach.

Scores of visual, tactile and sensory bits of information compose a customer's attitude toward your store. His perception is emotional, not logical. You may have a duty to pay attention, be logical and businesslike, but he doesn't.

A case in point. A retailer friend was proudly surveying the changes he had made to his traditional lumber dealer establishment as part of the company conversion to a home center operation.

A myriad of merchandise was arranged scientifically, the result of many studies and much thought. On paper, it was as perfect as it could be. Then a customer walked up and asked, "is there a store around here that sells lumber?"

Sure, it was a dumb question. If the customer

had looked around, paid attention, it would have been obvious that the dealer sold lumber. But it illustrates what alert retailers have long known: you can't do too much in helping the public to be aware of what you sell and what you can do for your customers. Incidentally, our slightly shaken friend soon had some lumber front and center.

Listen to the experts when designing a layout and creating an overall atmosphere for your store. But also listen to friends, customers, and anyone else who can be induced to offer an

opinion. You might not like all the answers you get, but that input just might be among the most valuable advice you receive. Casual opinions can be invaluable because they are emotional, not studied, and come from people with no axe to grind.

Some of the most successful retailers have told us that when it gets down to facts versus vibrations, go with your hunches everytime.

Treaters React to EPA Ruling The Environmental Protection Agency's new restrictions

on the major wood preserving chemicals, pentachlorophenol, creosote and inorganic arsenicals, appears to have little negative effect on the pressure treating industry.

The greatest impact of the decision will be felt by the retailer who will no longer be able to sell over-the-counter wood preserving chemicals for consumer use.

Use of the three chemicals will not be banned, but will be restricted to certified applicators or to persons working under their direct supervision.

ing and, in some cases, respirators to be worn by those applying preservatives or handling freshly treated wood.

Pentachlorophenol manufacturers will be asked to reduce concentrations of HxCDD dioxin to 15 parts per mil-

lion immediately and to one part per million within 18 months.

A consumer awareness program spelling out hazards of improper use and listing conditions for use of treated wood inside homes and commercial buildings will be required as part of the decision. Manufacturers will be responsible for providing retailers with consumer information

While coatings will be required to prevent skin contact with chemicals in some uses of wood treated with penta, no coatings will be required on millwork, moulding, plenums and permanent wood foundations.

Although it is expected that the banned chemicals will be removed from retail stores, most retailers appffu to agree with the W. R. Grace Co. home center division spokesperson who said "It's too early at this point to know what effect it will have. We've had no chance to read the 400 page document detailing the regulations."

Charles Thomas, president, American Wood Preservers Bureau, Arlington, Va., commented that although penta was hit hard, the pressure treating industry came out "pretty good." He feels positive about the action as do most of the industry association executives. The American Wood Preservers Institute, Society of American Wood Preservers. Inc. and the National Forest Product Association proposed in February, 1983, many of the aspects included in the EPA decision including the implementation of a new consumer awareness program.

The Society of American Wood Preservers, Inc., Arlington, Va., is reviewing the new rules in detail, but their first impression is that "the news for the arsenical wood (Please turn to page 38)

Retailers who are not maximizing their sales of moulding should consider the performance figures for sales of millwork products. With the upswing

in construction activity in 1983, sales of millwork products rebounded to a dollar volume of $6.7 billion at the manufacturing level, according to a

millwork industry report prepared by Business, Trends Analysts, Inc.

"baby boom" generation portends rising demand for new housing. However, several factors will limit the benefits this growth will bring to the millwork industry. First, the population is expected to continue its shift toward the Sunbelt, where aluminum products are generally preferred over wood. Second, the trend toward attached housing translates into fewer windows and doors per housing unit, regardless of geographic region.

One area where wood is gaining over other materials is in the market for sliding glass doors. Wood versions represented close to lTVo of all such doors sold in 1980, up from only 7o/o in 1972. With manufacturer sales pegged at $116 million in 1983, anticipated average annual growth rates of 7.590 will bring sales in this product category to $239 million by 1993.

The greatest potential for growth over the coming decade lies in the

replacement and remodeling sector, which accounted for more than 4890 of all millwork sold in 1983. Consum-

er concern with the rising cost of home heating bills will continue to fuel sales of energy-efficient replacement doors and windows, as will the

continuing trend toward remodeling as an alternative to purchasing a new home.

In the wood moulding segment

alone, much of recent growth has

been attributable to the do-it-yourself sector. Nearly 6090 of all purchases of wood moulding were for less than 300 ft. of product. Dollar sales are expect-

ed to increase during 1984, totaling $1.5 billion. For the coming decade, as remodeling continues to push moulding demand beyond its new construction base, sales are expected

to rise 7.290 annually.

high volume and profitable retailers offer clinics? Because clinics bring feet into the stores, because clinics help sell material, tools, and plans and books, and because the mere promotion of the store offering clinics establishes it as a do-it-yourself

headquarters-that one-stop center where the customer feels he will find a//

Some retailers feel that clinics are such an important part of their business they would never entertain the thought ofdoing without a continual program. Others,

however, have told me that they have failed in their attempt to successfully draw traffic or produce meaningful clinics. The difference between these winners and losers is dedication and promotion.

What do I mean by dedication? Well you can't say "l'm going to run a clinic next Tuesday night, and put an ad in the paper Tuesday morning, draw no attendance, and then come to the conclusion that c/inics don't work in this market. lt takes creative planning to maximize the potential of a clinic program.

How you can save on delivery costs

QUESTION:

"Is there an easy way to determine delivery costs for shingles, wallboard and other materials that must be hand placed

at the job?"

ANSWER: There is an easy way, but most readers won't like the answer and won't believe that it could possibly cost so much. Take your cue locally from the charge made for service calls by tv and appliance companies. In most areas the cost will fall somewhere close to $40. Generally this covers the cost of moving one man and a pick up

or panel truck to and from the customer.

From that point on, the cost of the men and equipment per hour, applied against the time involved at the job site, will provide a fairly accurate placement cost. In practical terms, an $80 cost of a delivery stop on low margin, or small sales value, merchandise results in a losing transaction. Hence, many dealers just don't handle wallboard or shingles. Conversely, they get paid or charge for what they do or furnish.

The typical lumber and building material dealer is moving around in a 2Vz ton truck with two men, or with an off loading piece of equipment, in addition to the bigger truck and driver. As a general rule

you will be very close to identifying the stop costs involved in hand placement at the job site if you double the service call charge in your trading area.

Before we all break our collective arm

patting ourselves on the back for the grand deficit-reduction measure adopted by the Congress, we need to keep in mind just what was done in Washington.

Congress took steps to reduce the annual deficits by both increasing some taxes and reducing some expenditures.

They did not reduce the national debt by one single penny.

All it will accomplish is to slow down the rate of increase. And that debt will increase into the forseeable future.

We will concede that the first step toward fiscal solvency is to begin to cut the speed with which Washington is piling up the debt.

As candidates campaign on your doorstep we ask you not to let them forget that red ink is still being splashed in gallons over the Federal balance sheets and spending must truly be brought under control.

Home Centers of America is being acquired by K mart for $11 per share

No name has been disclosed for the new stores. Home Centers,which lost its right to the Home-Pro Warehouse name in a recent trademark infringement suit filed by Pro Hardware,has been using the name Home Warehouse, but it is thought that this name will be dropped.

According to the introduction to the booklet, written by Ken Tinckler of the hardwood club, this history is an expression of the respect and affection that members of the industry

have for one another, associates and competitors alike.

The booklet tells the stories of such prominent industry leaders as Captain Robert Dollar, the first man to ship hardwoods across the Pacific; Bob Osgood and Roy Barto, two pioneers in the Philippine mahogany trade;

Paul Penberthy, founder of one of California's most successful hard-

wood operations; and many others.

Many hardwood people were interviewed during the years McKinney spent researching his history, including the late Leroy Stanton, Sr., the grand old man of the hardwood in-

dustry, and Donald F. White, the only Westerner to serve as president of the National Hardwood Lumber Association.

New uses for old yellow

ELLOW poplar (Lirioden' dron tulipifera'), long a

popular hardwood for furniture, boxes, planing mill products, veneer, paneling and miscellaneous

wooden articles for the home, is receiving new recognition as a fram-

ing lumber following research

studies by the U.S. Forest Producls

Laboratory and the School of

Forest Resources at North Carolina State University.

Because it is an abundant and fast the growing tree found only eastern part of the United States,

in particularly in the Gulf and

Southeast Coastal States, a Push is being made to use it locally in place

of spruce, pine and fir shipped in from the West Coast and Canada.

Tests conducted bY several lumber mills in North Carolina, including Johnston Lumber Co. and

poplar is about 500 years although some have passed their l000th anniversary.

As the tree grows to reach the sunlight, it sheds its lower branches.

This provides, even in young trees, a

large percentage of clear lumber.

Because the species grows onlY in rich moist soil where lots of sunshine is available, the quality of the wood is excellent.

Properties of yellow poplar include being moderately stiff with little tendency to split when nailed, staying in place, resisting warping, gluing easily, and accepting paint or enamel readily for a smooth, lasting finish. It is a favorite wood for use with hand tools. Yellow poplar is often considered the least difficult of all lumbers to kiln dry.

The North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service is promoting the use of yellow poplar to builders and has issued an informative brochure.

They are suggesting that it may be

the framing lumber of the future.

Yellow poplar is an ancient tree.

Geologists believe that during the Cretaceous age there were 16 dif-

ferent members of the genus, Liriodendron, but that during the Ice Age l5 of them perished, leaving only the tree now found in the South.

Yellow poplar is said to be the tallest hardwood in North America, reaching a record height of200 feet.

Because of this, it produces some of the largest clear logs available. The usual life span of a virgin Yellow

saw timber in the South has been estimated by the Forest Service at roughly ll billion board feet. North

Carolina reports the growth of 508,337,000 board feet in 1974, more than three times the 150,688,000 board feet harvested. It is claimed that the harvest could be doubled with no increase in forest management intensity. At the turn of the century the annual cut exceeded one billion board feet. Latest production figures indicate a cut of about 650 million feet per Year.

The heartwood will often show extreme discoloration because of minerals found in certain soil formations. Black, purple, red, green, blue and variations of these colors change the appearance of the wood,

but do not lessen the strength or value of the lumber.

Yellow poplar also is recognized for an acrid inner bark which can be used as a stimulant in medicines.

The leaves of the tree are dark shiny green and measure about five or six inches in both length and width. In the autumn they turn a deep yellow. The fruit of the tree is a compact cone of winged carpels.

Measuring about three inches long and a half inch wide, it ripens in Septunber or October. The flowers, tulip-like in shape and size with six petals, vary in color with a light orange center. These blossoms account for yellow poplar also being known as tulip poplar and tulip tree.

It is estimated that the excellent

rate of growth can insure a

perpetual supply of yellow poplar at the present rate of cutting. Predictions are that in North Carolina the use of yellow poplar as a framing board could save home builders as much as l0 to 2090 in costs.

He continued "We already have safety protections for workers" and concluded "We expect to gain new business from the ruling."

There's "on the whole not a lot to complain about" was the reaction of a Koppers Co. spokesman. His company,

J. Warren Sullivan, Southern Pressure Treater Association, Shreveport, La., felt that with the exception of lowerering the dioxin content the rulings would have little effect on his members who are all certified applicators.
