Prefinished wood r a ready market
,1|\ RE YOU keeping your cus&l tomers in the dark or are you telling them the advantages of buying prefinished exterior wood products?
Yards often get into a commodity mentality and don't take the time to sell prefinished siding, fascia, soffit and rim. However, many prefinishers will handle builder calls for retailers and provide infonnation and samples needed to complete a sale.
Factory prefinishing has been an industry for about 30 years, but only about 87o of exterior wood is pre-finished nationwide. The Midwest and Northeast are strong prefinish areas. The South, says Ron Cottelli, president of Triad PreFinish, Greensboro, N.C., is "one of the last frontiers for prefinishing."
He finds major advantages in factory prefinishing. "First, coating all four sides of a board seals it from moisture. Second, in a controlled environment the coating can be applied to a proper thickness and allowed to dry and adhere to the wood before installation and exposure, eliminating problems encountered when painting is done in the field. Factory finishing seates unifonn coverage, avoiding wet lines and an uneven appearance as the paint begins to age. In addition, prefinishing costs aft,out 307o less than a painter in the field."
Cottelli notes "more demand for the quality at a lower price" offered by prefinishing in the South as people come from areas where it is widely used. His company offers builders extra services including matching nails and accessories such as vent covers or aluminum vent strips finished to match the wood.

Bob Harvey, sales manager at Carolina Colortones, Arden (Asheville), N.C., adds "instant curb appeal" to the list of advantages offered by prefinishing, explaining that with prefinished siding a house is immediately atractive.
Southern retailen are slow to react to the advantages of selling prefinished lumber, Hanrey notes. He crlls it "a shame" that only a small percentage are aware of the benefits.
Prefinishing avoids the cell degradation, oxidation and chalking that can occur in as little as two weeks
building facility this month. One building will house two machines for painting and staining and drying equipment with the second used for inventory and storage. With more room, they will have a showroom for displays and sample boards to show contractor, retailer and homeowner customers the different colors and types of products available.
Harvey plans o extend sales across North Carolina into the Greenville area as well as south to Georgia using the same methods the company has found successful in the western part of the state. They advertise on local radio and tv and call on contractors and architects. "After a customer tries prefinishing, the product sells itself," Harvey maintains.
Prefinishers operate or ship into
when bare wood is exposed to ultra violet light, Harvey notes. Life of a coating applied after sun damage is cut in half in his opinion.
He and Chuck Campbell, owner of tle l5-year-old company, believe in offering extra services. They market matching nails, a special rustic cross channel adaption of a tongue and groove, v-joint siding pattern and a corner edge that creates an oblique line when siding is butted into it. They insist on careful wrapping, banding and protection for inventory. They ship to customers across North Carolina and into South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, often by company trucks.
Convinced that prefinish is "ready to take off," Carolina Colortones will move into a new, 22,W0 sq. ft., dual
almost every southern sCate. They are ready to provide the products which they believe offer many advantages to a builder. Now it is up to the retailers to create a bridge between manufacturer and user. As suppliers, they stand to gain a lot with very little effort.

DROPER racking, storage and Pro- f tection are essential to assure optimum perforrrance from glulant beams, cautions APA - The Engineered Wood Systems (new name for American Ptywood Association).
Beams are commonly Protected with sealants, primers or wrappings when they leave the mill. Sealants help guard against moisture penetration and checking and should be reapplied to the ends after trimning. Surface sealants can be applied to the top' bottom and sides to resist dirt and moisture and belp control checking and grain raising. A penetrating sealant should be used if beams will be stained or given a natural finish.

SURFACE SEALANT (OPTIONAL)
Water-resistant wrappings protect beams from moisture, dirt and scratches. opaque wrappings are best because sunlight can discolor beams. Beams can be wrapped individually, by the bundle or by the load. In situations where appearance is especially important" wrappings should be left on until after installation.
Since glulams are conmonly loaded and unloaded with a forklift, drivers must practice techniques that reduce the risk of damage. Greater stability is achieved when the sides of the beans, ratler than the bottoms, rest on the forks. However, care must be taken to prevent flexing when cat-

If a crane with cable slings or chokers is used to load or unload beams, adequate blocking must be provided between the cable and the member. Wooden cleats or blocking should be used to protect corners. Using spreader bars can reduce the likelihood of damage when lifting especially long beams.
In the yard, glulams need a level, well-drained, covered storage site. Beams should be kept off the ground with lumber bunks, skids or rack systems. Wrappings should be kept intact during storage to protect the beans ftom moisture, dirt, sunlight, scratches and impact danage.
For long term storagq it is advisable o cut holes u slits in the bottom of the wrappings o allow ventilation and water draining. Proper ventilation and drainage will reduce the likelihood of water damage, staining and decay.

sale Builders Supply, Inc., Dallas, Tx., is one company making sure their mission statement is a living, breathing document.
After hearing William H. Blades, William Blades & Associate s, Te m pe, Az., talk, they decided to re-energize and develop a corporate culture.
They were interested in training and coaching people to serve as partners with clients, Blades recalls.
To do this they included "will continuously delight our clients" in their mission statement. Because they wanted to develop value-added services for their clients, they asked Blades to meet with their customers to discuss sales, management and service ideas designed to help them to grow their businesses.

Blades desctibes corporate culture as "everyone going in the same direction with a united mission for every single client. No holdouts 1007o of the group must buy in. If an individual elects not to, the only thing worse than employee turnover is none when there should be."
The first step when a company seeks Blades' help to develop a mission statement is taking the executive group on a retreat to verbalize what they feel the organization stands for and, more importantly, what it will
stand for in the futur€. He cautions this is no simple pmcess, but recommends that it be rccomplished quickly.
Standard items tbat he includes in erh mission statqnent arc:
What we are committed to and stand for with regards to our workforce and our clients.
Phrases or sentences stating the company's conviction ln regards to shareholders, vendors and tbe commmity.
When the statement is completed, Blades meets with middle management 0o discuss it. He advises thenr
What lf?
Sales are flat...
Margins are slipping... Turnover is high (or maybe too low)... Confl ics are increasing... Communications are detaiorating. Complaints are increasing.. The ship feels rudderless... Faces are long with smiles rare... Customers are not praising you... You know something is wrong, but not what... You feel more like a boss than a servant.
...Your group may need re-energizing. Everyone in the organization can be the best at what they do. Every executive can get bett€r. Every sales person can improve.
that the executive group has granted them freedom to modify the statement. Middle management rarely changes one word he notes, but it is concerned with whether or not top executives will live by the statement.
The mission scatement when ready to be made public is framed with a large copy hung in the lobby and smaller versions placed tiroughout the workplace. Ideally, it is summarized on company literature and business cards.
A mission statement does not function alone, Blades points out. Using it
with an organizational chart position descriptions and standards of performance, management can provide high-quality one-on-one evaluations and coaching to give employees moe control over future income and self improvement.
An organization chart shows staff functions, titles, responsibility and sccountabiuty. Position descriptions spell out what is expected ftom each person, pointing them toward major responsibilities and eliminating misunderstandings. Blades recommends updating pooition desctiptions annually, adding functions considered weaknesses to "stretch" an individual. Standards of performance measure each item on the position description and can be used to detennine raises or bonuses.
A review lets a person not pulling his weight know help is available. What he must do to ensure tenure can be spelled out clearly with a deadline set for improvement. Using the tools discussed, management can be fair, fimr and specific about expoctations, Blades says.
With a mission statement in place, everyone lrrows what the organization stands for, what is expected from them and what method management uses to measure performance. Once sales, management and support groups are receiving targeted training and education, it is time for customized fine tuning to ensure everyone participates in the culture drive. Unless the workforce feels the op group is committed, the process will fail, Blades warns.
However, he adds, "Your people and your clients will thank you for your commitnent to a culnre calling for greahess from evetryone."

Two versions are available: YL2 Extension forks can be adjusted in seconds right from the driver's seat to handle four-way entry pallets or pallets of various sizes (32" to 48"). RB{ Reachforks also can be easily extended and retracted even while carrying a load, permitting two-deep stacking in the rack, one-side access to a truck trailer and the ability to handle two relatively light loads at a tine.
The forks are constructed of a high-tensile strength steel, and their hydraulic system is completely enclosed to eliminate moisture, dirt and damage concerns.
Brick Maker
Quikrete's Walk Maker pathwayproducing concrete mold is now available in a Running Bond Brick Pattern.
Designed to make brick pathways with pre-packaged concrete mix for half the cost of traditional brick, the 2' x 2'plastic form is placed level with the ground and filled with pre-nixed concrete. The concrete is smoothed over and the form removed immediately, leaving the bricks to harden. The form is then placed adjacent to the section just completed and the process repeated until the entire length of the path is finished.

Model OO 3303 2" - 3'New Joist On The Block
As engineered wood producls continue to grow in acceptance, they also continue to grow in ability. Products are getting longer, stronger and easier to install.
One new engineered floor joist claims to be stronger than all others, testing above all competitors in all compafative span lengths.
Yet in designing TrimJoist, "adaptability was our primary god," said E. Barry Sanford, pres., Rebel Building Components, Vernon, Al. "Custom manufactured and engineered floor joists have been available for several years. However, those products have been hard to adapt for plumbing openings and on-site constuction changes. We wanted to re-design a successful product to become even mofe successful and easier to install - especially for the single-family market."

The product is manufactured in lengths nmging from 4' to 30', utilizing 2'increments. Each end has a I'tinming section, fomrcd by high-strength structual adhesives, that has been succ€ssfully crush-tested in excess of 6,700Ibs.
Utilizing 2"x4" timber, the open web construction allows easy access to and installation of ductwork, wiring, pvc components and plumbing and provides an extra-wide nailing and gluing surface for floor panels. It can also be rimmed on the consfuction site fon a perfect fit.
'It allows me to build a multi-level product with truly smooth first floor @ilings," said Memphis conftactor Jim Chambers. "The dimensions are exact and the materid is consistent. It will not change aft€r it is put into place. All you have to do is trim it, place it and nail it down."

Setting the OSB record straight
1!| FTER l5 years of overcoming .frl. misperceitions about quatit! and performance, oriented strandboard (OSB) is rapidly approaching 507o of the structural panel market.
"One of the things that had to be overcome in the early 1980s was OSB's non-traditional rlisual characteristics," recalls Stewart Lavigne, former Weyerhaeuser OSB sales manager now overseeing OSB exports. "In the builder's mind, veneer was king and anything made of reconstituted wood was inferior. But after we convinced them to trv it. they found OSB a great product."
Although OSB evolved from waferboard, it differs with rectangular strands strategically oriented" at right angles for enhanced strength. It is equivalent to plywood in the DOC PS2 Performance Standard for Wood-based Structural-use Panels. It also exceeds exterior grades of plywood in some strength properties and

usually costs less. Panel sizes range from 3x6 to 8y24,114" to 1-1/8" thick and beyond.
As an engineered product, OSB is used for residential sheathing and subflooring, floor joists, insulated panels, mobile and modular housing and as a component in multi-core hardwood plywood overlay and siding. All major U.S. model building codes accept it.

A NATIONAL EVALUATION REPORT (NER457) has been issued by the National Evaluation Service of the Council of American Building Otficials to confirm that PYRO-GUARD Fire RetardantTreated Lumber and Plywood meets requirements of the BOCA, UBC, and SBCCI model building codes.

uct for these applications," notes Frank Iannucci, OSB sales manager, Norbord IndusEies. "That's how far OSB has come."
Only five years ago, Lavigne points out, builders would not use OSB in commercial roof decking. "Now it's one of the most prominent panels for that application."
OSB has undergone numerous technological improvements. New manufacturing processes and advancements in srand quality and orientation are the most significant. Modem presses and improved resins and edge coatings provide a more uniform board with superior bonding and waterproofing characteristics.
A new generation of OSB mills with the latest technology is about to come on line. Ten mills in North America and at least two abroad are currently under constmction or in the final planning stages. By the end of 1996, North American OSB capacity is forecast to increase 35Vo ta 15.2 billion sq. ft. (3/8" basis).
A number of experts agree OSB could capture 50Vo of the North American structural panel market by 2000. Some project this happening as early as 1998.

OSB manufacturing processes rate among the forest industry's most environmentally friendly. Whole logs are cut to length, debarked, then converted to strands. Sawdust and other residual fiber is recycled and burned as a mill energy source. Log soaking pond sludge becomes fuel. Dryers have environmen0al emissions a fraction of what they were a decade ago. Fomnldehyde emissions or offgasses ftom bonding compounds are negligible.
Expected to be the 21st Century's preferred structural panel, OSB, according to Lavigne, "has developed into a reputable alternative not because of fiber issues, but because it's an excellent product."
