The housing industry and businesses dependent upon it should react positively to the 45% population gain expected in Texas by the year 2000. Far greater than the national average of l8%, this surge of people should stimulate the need for new home construction as well as remodeling of the current home inventory. Light construction also will benefit from the new businesses expected to develop in the state

LAT's big centennial celebration

HE eagerlY awaited l00th annual convention and exposition ofthe Lumbermen's Association of Texas was

all that had been hoped for and more.

In true Texas fashion it was big in all respects: it had record attendance (nearly 7000), a record number of exhibits (430), heavy traffic through the show, a brass band (from the San Antonio Symphony orchestra, dressed in tux, no less), balloons (5000 dropped from the ceiling opening day) plus hoopla and enthusiasm to spare.

LAI's centennial, held in San Antonio,

tied in nicely with the l50th anniversary ofthe founding ofthe State ofTexas. Indeed, the Governor was in town for ceremonies connected with the Sesquicentennial, a word many find even harder to pronounce than to read. Ourselves included.

But amongst all the celebrating, what was probably the most important element at LAT's milestone gathering was the

positive attitude of the participants.

Despite a state economy reeling from falling oil and gas prices, the true Texas grit

is alive and well. As historian T.R. Fehrenbach put it inawidelyquoted remark, "What sets Texans apart will remain a sense of history, culture, a frontier spirit. That spirit is still thrashing around out there and hard times are not going to extinguish it."

The main convention speaker, Clifford J. Grum, president and ceo, Temple In-

land, Inc., Diboll, Tx., also quoted Fehrenbach in his talk on the bright future of the Texas housing industry. Noting the underlying strength ofthe state's economy, despite the severe impact of lower oil and gas prices, Grum cited viarious eco-

nomic and demographic factors that should bolster home building and its sup pliers.

Additionally, he pointed out that Texas is gaining a broader economic base, improving its educational system and has the

work ethic to make it all go.

Other speaken included an inspirational message from Bill Gove who said that excellence was an attitude that should be present within all we do in life. Using deft touches ofhumor he observed that happiness is a state of mind not a future goal.

Dr. Gene Stanaland. an economist and Alabama humorist of the fint rank, related horv economic self-interest propels our market system. Filling these demands, he said, produces a positive effect for society and that competition controls excessive self-interest by companies. The final economic arbiter. he noted. is the consumer.

Patrick McCormick, the president of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, with which the LAI is affiliated, gave an update on is

activities, introduced its new executive vice president Harlan Hummel, and also presented a talk by their executive director, Jerry Walker, on incentive plans.

The well attended ladies luncheon received an inspirational message from Dr. William E. Thorn, an erudite speaker who holds several doctoral degrees. Using a gentle touch, lightened with humor, he counseled the ladies on how to bring order to their spiritual, emotional and physical houses.

sitions in the long history of LAT. The frontier spirit of hospiality uas also well represented at many booths as exhibitors presented food and drink to shorgoers.

The Powell Lumber Co. booth had Etoufee. a delicious Cajun dish; Elder Wood Preserving had an endless supply of cold draft beer, while at the big MG Building Materials booth there uas food galore. MG gave away an astounding D50 fajitas during the April 18-20 run of the show. Exhibiting companies, a tough bunch for most shov organizers to please, were almost universally satisfied with the show traffic count. Conventioneers as well gave the expo high marks for bodt its entertainment and business aspecs.

At this watershed lmh annual convention, LAT also had a major change in management as a new executive vice president took orcr, though pn might sal' the names have hardly changed at all. Joe Butler, Sr., completing a 2O year, resulsfrlled stint as the managing officer, retired at the end ofthe convention, going on consultant status until the beginning of next year. His replacement is Joe Butler, Jr.. who for the pas decade has done such a capable job as exposition director for LAT. Texas lumbermen never seem to quit I N KEEPING with the celebration of I the l00th birthday of the Lumber

Adolfo Hinojosa who was born August 9, 1901, was found to be the oldest. followed closely by Tom Neal Sr., who was born on Sept. 5, 1901. Lawrence Henckel, born Jan. 24, 1902, and Charlie Beebe, born July 25, 1902 , were the third and fourth oldest.

Hinojosa, who will be 85 in two months, has been a salesman at Mclntyre Lumber Co. in Falfurrias since 1923.

Remarkably, he is still actively employed working a full day most of the time . . . after 63 years on thejob.

Henckel Lumber Co. has been operated by l,awrence Henckel, also 84, for the past 64 years in Hitchcock. It is close to Galveston and has a population ofabout 6500. He is both president and manager.

Henckel started in business with a gasoline station and garage and gradually

got into the lumber business. His customer mix is almost equally divided between contractor, commercial and do-ityoursel[ers. The yard occupies some two acres and has a railroad sidine. There are

Mclntyre Lumber Co., which is celebrating its 78th anniversary. occupies a full block in Falfurrias, a town of a little over 6000 people located on Highway 281

about 75 miles north of the Mexican border. George Martinez, who has been the manager for l0 years, says 'Adolfo's a good worker and can find anything the customers want, stuff I don't even know we have."

Neal, 84, who has been in the lumber business all his life, is semi-retired, but

works at Tharp Lumber Co. in La Marque every Saturday and during the week when he feels like it. He helped Os-

wald Tharp, the owner, construct the buildings for the yard, which opened in 1945, using lumber that they brought across the causeway from nearby Galveston.

His lumber career began in Oklahoma in l9l9 where he worked for four companies before moving to Texas in 1926 joining Reppert Lumber Co. He later bought a partnership and then the entire company. The store has been in its present location since 1931. It is affiliated with Ace Hardware and has a mix of contractor and d-i-y business.

Between them, these four men have racked up more than 250 years in the lumber business, yet they are still active and interested in their work today. It's spirit such as theirs which has moved the Lumber Association of Texas through its

first 100 years. Men of similar interests, energy and fortitude will no doubt be there when LAT celebrates its 200th birthday in 2086.

What the Texas market will be like in 100 yearc HAT lies ahead for the lumber and building materials industry in Texas? What changes will occur in the next 100 years? Will dealers experience as many improvements and advances between 1986 and 2086 as they did between 1886 and the present?

I T WAS almost l0 years ago when I Harvey Rosen,* then general merchandise manager of Handyman, accepted my

invitation to address the National Home Center Show. He used the ierm "comfort zone" in his speech. It was the first time most of us in the audience had heard it.To illustrate the term,Rosen invitedus tofold our iums. He than asked us to unfold them

and then to refold them in the opposite direction. (Try it!) In rftar position Rosen reminded us we were all "outside-of-ourcomfort-zone." He then went on to make his point about store layouts, visual merchandising, services and how they all affect the customer's comfort zone.

I was reminded of Rosen's speech recent-

ly when I read a story about criticisms which remodelers have concerning home centers. [n a focus group session, one con-

tractor remarked that he felt outside his

beefs and attitudes remodelers perceive about home centers. It started me thinking about those retail stores which I avoid because when I'm in them . . . I'm outside my comfort zone.

National Hardwood Lumber Association will conduct its annual hardwood lumber grading short course , Aug. 18-22, at its headquarters in Memphis, Tn. Course topics will include discussion and study of official NHLA rules combined with extensive grading practice on actual lumber in

the grading facilities adjacent to the NHLA classroom building. Discussion of mill yard practices and sawing practices which affect ttre grade as well as NHLA sales code procedures will be covered.

Registration for the five day coune ($150 for NHLA members and $200 for non members) may be made with Trisha Clariana at NHLA headquarters.

participated in activities at the 60th annual convention of the Virginia Building Material Association.

Business seminars drew a record num-

ber ofattendees as well as superlative comments. Mike McClelland of HWI gained the attention of the dealers by relating the successes of building material dealers who had faced the challenges of the mass merchandisen moving into their areas and not only survived, but actually thrived in the environment. His optimistic prediction for the next l0 years was en-

thusiastically received.

John Baldwin, knorvn to many from the 59th convention, returned to give dealers more insight into the necessity of gening

building material employees involved in the business. He demonstrated the many methods of delegating authority, hiring qualified employees and using their brainpower to improve business. Convention delegates were liberal in praising both sessions.

Forty two companies maintained table top exhibits during an evening session devoted to viewing products.

The founder was the great uncle ofthe present owner. Quality service has always been a hallmark of the store. The biggest changes experienced have been in competition as larger chain stores have moved into the area.

Herder's has stressed selling services as well as materials. They have branched out into the building of custom homes.

The management feels that the distribution of building materials is the biggest change in the industry with individual stores no longer always buying directly from the lumber mills and manufacturen.

While Wessendorff ranks as the oldest

continuing retailer affiliated with LAT, association records show numerous Texas lumber yards and home centers are not far behind. Six others have been in continu-

ous operation for more than 100 years.

Four almost qualiff as centenarians, having been founded between 99 and 88 years ago. More than half have remained in the family.

Capsule profiles of these venerable businesses have been compiled during interviews with the present owners and managers. Although historical facts are sketchy in some cases, Building Products Digest has attempted to be as complete as

possible in compiling this historical record for our readers.

Lowe's, in 335th place on the master list, ranked l8th among the 5l non-food retailers; also included: hyless Cashways (578th out of 1000) was 3lst; Wickes (675), 37th; Hechinger (700), 39th, and Home Depot (885), 47th. Fositions were granted on the basis of market value, sales, profis, assets, margins and return.

Contractor Sales Prof itable Establishing a niche in the contractor market is more profitable than competing head on with mass merchandisers for the consumer dollar.

This was the consensus ofpanelists at the President's Council, a meeting of presidents of association memben of the National Lumber and Building Material

"The future is good for the independent lumber dealer even in the face of stiff competition from mass merchandisers," said Ray Cooney, vice chairman of the board of Scotty's, Winter Park, Fl., one of the speaken. "The independent is in a good position because management is close to the source and employees are close to the customer. This means that implementing change and new ideas is easier and faster."

GanserTo Retire From SFPA William R. Ganser Jr., president of the Southern Forest Products Association, will retire at the end of this year. A fivemember selection committee of SFPA members is seeking his successor from candidates within and outside the association.

SFPA is a nonprofit trade association of Southern Pine lumber manufacturers

from 12 states in the South. The association is headquartered in New Orleans.

Ganser has served SFPA for 20 years.

The special fine sanding belt gives a burnished surface that apparently lays the end fibers down, according to Cliff Chulos, sales manager of Northwest Hardwoods. "The stain coat is more uniform and the blotchiness, often called birch end-grain bleed, is practically eliminated," he said.

After setting briefly it is wiped and brushed with a glazing brush for a fine furniture texture.

Hand padding can be done, but the grain definition of the Western alder, which closely resembles cherry and walnut, often achieves the desired values without this step. A final coat or two coats of lacquer gives the performance needed for table or cabinet surfaces.

Located on a well landscaped one and a

half acres at the intersection of Lamar Boulevard and 25th, the building has over 8,500 sq. ft. of floor space. Built in 1959,

it utilizes a Mount Vernon style of architecture.

H. L. Richards was general chairman of the building program with Bill Drake as chairman of the finance committee and P. J. Goodnight as chairman of the build-

ing materials donation committee. These three men worked with Gene Klein, association president at that time, and Gene Ebersole, then executive vice president, to collect the $200900 required for the construction plus numerous donations of materials.

Because of their efforts, the mortgage was burned as part ofthe official dedication on April 10, 1960. The foresight and generosity ofthe lumber dealers of Texas has paid offsince. The building is now worth several million dollars.

Nearly 100% of the materials used in the building came from Texas. Southern pine from Texas mills was used for structural timbers, framing and siding. Faneling of magnolia, red gum, black gum and red oak produced in Texas was used in every room. Oak strips, oak parquet and mixed hardwood parquet were used forthe floors. These lovely woods have endured as only wood can and are still a beautiful tribute to the wood products industry in Texas.

The building houses in addition to offices, a conference room and library which also serves as a museum of antique tools. The display of2Z7 tools is based on a collection acquired in 1963 from J. S. Combest of Waco. A cabinet maker, he had collected tools for over 35 years.

Today the collection is one of the most unusual in existence.

One of the tools, a Norse anvil, dates back to 1515. Others were used in the 1800s. A handmade wedge rail splitter and a cabin axe for smoothing the logs for
