"Oh, you'll pick it up in a week or so..." ;S THERE a shopper alive who has not been ig-

lnored, insulted, ill-informed or bored by a

store employee doing a lousy job? While the clerk

usually gets the blame (and sometimes richly deserves it), we think too often the sins of the salesfloor are committed by a salesperson who doesn't know what to do because no one ever told him. Too many employers just assume that the new person will some how "just pick it up" after a few weeks. How sad for all concerned.

Most employees want to do a good job; they just need to know what il is. And what it isn't.

Too many of the so+alled job descriptions we've seen are woefully short on specifics. The full range and possibilities of the job are frequently left to the imagination of the new hand.

Poor employee training is one of the more correctable aspects of business. Yet all too often the whine is heard that the company is too small for a training program. Nonsense. Even virtual

mom and pop companies could guide their

employees to greater productivity if they would just determine to do so. It is neither a daunting nor impossible task.

Management in several 30 minute sessions of well-planned instruction can perform wonders in directing employees towards better job perfor-

mance. Additionally, the local library probably has dozens of books on various business topics.

Local schools have night classes and other formal training and education progr:rms. Associations often are a rich source for employee training.

Professional instructors, suppliers, even video tapes and records all are available to help.

Employee education should command management's attention and enthusiastic support from the highest to the lowest levels. Those too busy putting out the proverbial fires will firnd their

neglect of meaningful employee training will ensure the fires are eternal.

LAT unites lumbermen of Texas since 1886 THE LLJMBERMEN'S Association of Texas has repf resented lumber and building material dealers of the state since 1886.

In 1959, they moved to the present location at25th and Lamar in Austin.

Drake served as secretary from 1886 to 1907 when SamT.

While records are not clear as to who attended the first convention on May 15, 1886, at the Millett Opera House in Austin, it is generally agreed that they were leaders of the building materials industry, all feeling a growing need to talk over mutual problems and opportunities and unite Ior cooperatlon.

Plans had been laid at an organizational meeting in Waco several months before.

It is thought that W.B. Brazelton,

Swinford, Houston, took over, serving until 1913. There is a gap in records during the time ofWorldWar I, but Jack Dionne, founder/publisher of The Merchnnt Magazine, the sister publication to Building Products Digest, became secretary in 1918.

He served until 1930, also serving as secretary of the Texas Fores0ry Association for part of that time.

Lamar Forrest, owner and manager of the Forrest Lumber Co. , Lubbock, was president of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association (now National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association) in 19,14. W.B. "Windy" Oldham, Oldham Lumber Co., Dallas, served as president in 196l; Samson Wiener, Wiener Lumber Co., Dallas, 1970; Cosmo Guido, Guido Lumber Co., San Antonio, 1976, and Dean lraman, Home Building and Lumber Co., Inc., Rosenberg, heads the organization this year.

A century of retailing in Texas

ifiE HANDSOME, efficient home I centers and building materials

stores in Texas today are direct, but unrecognizable descendants of the retail lumber yards of the late 1880s.

At that time the lumberYard in Texas was usually an independent operation located along the railroad track.

Business was highly competitive with a good dealer profiting from service,

complete inventory, interest in the customer and the ability to outshine other retailers; just as it is today.

Lumber and related Products were hauled away from the Yard bY horse

and wagon. Showrooms and fancY offices were non€xistent. The Yard headquarters was little more than a shack, usually furnished with a rolltop desk and a couPle of emPtY nail kegs for the customers to sit on.

Most lumber was stored outside

with only the top grades and flooring being under cover. Customers often

walked the tracks getting estimates from several yards before deciding where their business would go.

Multiple yards were common.

From 1876 to 1890 William Cameron

& Co. expanded to more than 60

yards. Long-Bell had 35 yards in 1902 and ll8 in 1918. Familyowned yards such as the C. W. Bryant Lumber Co. and the Hawn Lumber Co. also were prevalent.

After the first World War, lumber yards began to change. They moved uptown to more convenient locations.

Displays were used to attract the attention of Mrs. Homeowner and make her feel she must have the items shown for her home. Advertising and

promotion came into being.

thing here, while the actual bulk storage is done in several yards on the edge of town. This store carries in

stock four million feet of lumber, a million feet of wall board and paint,

wall paper, building paper, Patent roofing and shingles, wooden shingles, etc., in equal bulk.

Five internal sales people, five yard employees and three office workers keep the operation moving smoothly.

Texas dealers' 99th annual convention lN typical Texas fashion, the lLumbermen's Association of Texas celebrated their 99th annual convention and exposition by having the biggest opening day in their history as they prepared for more record breaking at next year's l00th Anniversary Convention.

an opinion which broadened exemptions from payment of state sales tax on purchases of certain materials by persons engaged in farm and ranch operations.

Substantially, current law states: "Exempted from state sales tax are:

(l) factory manufactured grain storage

facilities when purchased as a single unit by a farmer or rancher and used to store the production from such farm or ranch; (2) building materials usd to construct on-farm storage facilities for agricultural commodities produced from such farm or ranch, and (3) all specialized facilities, such as dairy bams and confinements for the feeding of swine and cattle when used in the production, cultivation, planting, sowing, harvesting, processing, spraying, preservation or irrigation of any livestock, poultry, agricultural or dairy products produced from such lands."

Officials of the Oklahoma Tax Commission say the burden of proof for such exemption rests with the purchaser. Dealers, therefore, need not be reluctant to grant state sales tax exemptions provided the purchaser certifies he qualifies for the

SFPA Meeting To Study Quality The quality of southern pine lumber will be a major topic at the mid-year meeting of the Southern Forest Products Association, June 26-27 in Atlanta, Ga. Expo, the biennial forest products machinery and equipment trade show, will be held in conjunction with this meeting.

A special video tape, "Quality Under Fire," will kick off the meeting to emphasize that the industry, which will produce over 100 billion board feet of southern pine lumber this year, is taking the initiative on the major issue

of quality as well as Canadian imports, and creating a new demand through an expanded marketing program, according to Karl Lindberg, marketing manager at SFPA. Keynote speaker will be James A. Blue, vice president of Boeing Commercial Airplane Co., who was a leader in

developing Boeing's reputation for excellence in quality control.

U.S. Representative Jerry Huckaby (D-La.) will address the issue of Canadian lumber imports. A panel of southern pine customers including retailers is scheduled to discuss quality.

A video report on the SFPA's five year marketing plan to create another 1.4 billion board feet of annual demand

by 1990 will be shown.

French Stone Fireplaces Handcrafted stone fireplaces imported from France by Atre of America are reportedly 2/3 less expensive than traditional masonry fireplaces and come in six different styles to complement various interior designs.

The stones for the fireplaces reportedly come from the same quarry in southwest France that providd the building materials for the famed Pont du Gard, an aqueduct and bridge built by the Romans more than 2fiX) years ago and still standing. Cures for coughs, aches, pains and snakes

r TARDWOOD trees now valued JAfor lumber used in paneling,

flooring, furniture, cabinets and woodworking were once important for their contributions to the medicine chests of the Indians and early settlers

of America.

Housewives throughout the Eastern part of the country sought out the red and sap gum trees (Liquidambar

styracifluo), popularly known as sweet gum, to obtain the sap which they used in preparing ointments and syrups to be applied as external treatment for wounds and skin problems.

The bark of the same tree was often boiled in water with the resulting

liquid prescribed as a remedy for those suffering from dysentery.

Leaves and roots were used in a

decoction which was applied as a liniment to ease the pain and discomfort of all types of injuries.

Coughs in early days were treated with a syrup made from the sweet sap of the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis). The method of obtaining this sap was unique. A piece of green branch was held over a fire to release the sap which ran out the other end as a warm juice. This was caught in a container and administered to the ailing person as a soothing syrup.

Eastern cottonwood (Populus del-

toides) produced a resin which was made into a salve to be applied as a

medication on cuts. burns and

scratches. Tea brewed from the buds and bark of this tree was a frequently prescribed gargle for sore throats and coughs. The cottonwood, considered

the fastest growing tree in North America, was and is a major species on the Mississippi delta and nearby adjoining rivers.

Tupelo and black gum (Nyssa sy/vatica) grow all over the Eastern United States. Years ago tea made from boiling the inner bark in water was a popular remedy to apply to skin

eruptions. It also was considered useful for reducing the swelling and inflamation of the skin caused by poison sumac and poison ivy. Small twigs frazzled at the end were favored as tooth cleaners in absence of commercial toothbrushes.

Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra\, widely found throughout the South, was first used by the Indians who claimed it re-

duced pain and inflamation. Settlers used the inner bark to make a poultice

or salve for wounds, skin irritations and rheumatism. They also made tea from the leaves for those with upset stomachs.

Liquid from boiled bark was thought to cure thrush when used as a mouth-

wash. Tea made from the leaves, either green or dried, has a rich Vitamin C content. It also has been used

as a rinse to give luster to hair. A strong astringent can be made from the green fruit.

White ash (Fraxinus americana'1 grows in many are:ts of the U.S. It too was used by the Indians who stuffed it into their shoes and boots to keep rattlesnakes away. If this didn't work, a decoction of buds and bark was used to treat snake bites. Decoctions of the inner bark have been used by herbalists as reducing aids.

productivity tactics and good management methods. His suggestions for employee motivation and

profit evaluation were first rate.
