Hf,

What, Me Worry?

VOICE #l: "What's to get ready for?

Business is good, forecasts are good, I'll worry about the future when it gets here."

VOICE #2: "We've enjoyed a very long period of prosperity, this has traditionally been a cyclical business, some kind of downturn is inevitable."

While the ease of complying with Voice #l is undeniable, prudence dictates that we pay serious attention to the sober warning of Voice #2. It may be added effort to do that, but long-term profitability and even corporate survival clearly belong to the latter choice.

Planning ahead is something we hear about a lot from Corporate America. Both bigs and smalls piously trot out tentative scenarios ranging from sales forecasts to next year's inventory control, slated improvements in operations, financing future projects, corporate goals and the like. Some are verbal, sometimes mainly hot air. Some are written down and presented as Holy

Script by High Priests of the Company. Some, remarkably enough, are even begun. To the surprise of almost no one, very few are ever carried through to completion. The record of planning completed is not a promising one.

Yet the talk at all levels in business and in the country in general seems to be: How long can these good times continue? Housing starts have been at very high levels. The stock market is playing around in mountaintop territory. Inflation and interest rates, and hence mortgages, are at low, valley levels. The best of all worlds. Some seers have proclaimed that we have moved into a new era of continuing prosperity. We hope they're right, but we don't think so.

Given the vast and amply proven human ability to screw up things, the idea ofeternal prosperity seems a fable for the foolish.

The voices of reason are clear. Plan now for the tough times sure to come, or pay dearly for your neglect later.

fire-retardant treated Plywood and Lumber provide a proven, cost-effective range of building products for use in interior applications where fire-resistant construction materials are specified.

Applications for treated products include roof sheathing, roof trusses, roof framing, floor trusses, joists, sub-flooring, blocking, furring, paneling, studs, architectural millwork and trim. treated products offer a lower in-place cost than noncombustible classified materials.

pressure-treated, fire-retardant lumber and plywood is highly effective in controlling the spread of flame, smoke and devastation caused by fire. treated products carry an "FRS" rating under UL classification, exhibiting a flame spread and smoke rating of 25 or less. At 30 minutes exposure to flame, treated products show no evidence of significant progressive combustion. All products are produced under a third-pa(y

quality assurance program. Testing br UL'"' for hygroscopicity has resulted ir being classified as a Type A firr retardant as defined in AWPA Standardr C-20 and C-27.

ireated products are approved by major building codes including:

The risks of switching to a pro focus

ANY retailers, faced with declining consumer sales, have added outside sales forces to pursue builder, contractor, remodeler and commercial business. Integral to their success, though, is being prepared for the risks.

Selling to professionals is the complete opposite of selling retail. In retail, the customer comes to you, usually pays list price, pays on the spot, and takes the merchandise away with them. Pro-oriented dealers, though, must go to their customers, discount the price, deliver the merchandise, and wait to be paid. And this new customer base often operates out of the back of a truck and has among the industry's poorest credit ratings.

As sales volume to pros increases, there is a reciprocating drop in gross profit and increasing risk from having so great an amount of sales to a small number of customers. In addition. the more outside salespeople focus on creating gross profit, there is a reciprocating drop in sales production, since high-ticket sales such as upscale hardware and kitchen/bath projects require more time and effort.

Nevertheless. dealers who sell to pros can develop long-term, loyal relationships that result in regular,

more personal attention, it's been among the most successful niches for dealers that compete against big box retailers. A pro focus helps even the playing field by negating some of the big boxes' greatest strengths, including retail square footage, location, advertising and promotions.

Yet, the competition often responds by grabbing an even greater share of your existing retail business. "One of the problems is we assume we're going to keep the retail business while we're out working on the pro business," notes Doug Murdoch, market development manager for TruServ. "What usually happens is the retail business begins slipping away."

Mixed dealers who try to serve both retail and professional customers sometimes serve neither well.

According to a recent National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association survey, on average dealers that serve both retail and pro customers are significantly less prohtable than dealers that concentrate on just one segment.

o Investing in equipment, such as pagers, mobile phones and company vehicles.

o Investing in new inventory.

. Investing in technologies required to manage the outside sales operations.

big-ticket sales. Operationally, pro sales offer a greater return on fixed investments, since they typically are less expensive as a percentage of overall sales.

Because selling to pros requires

According to TruServ, the decision to sell to the pro segment requires several risks and investments. including:

o Usually, sacrificing margin for volume.

o Hiring or appointing an outside sales staff.

o Instituting accounts receivable and credit procedures.

. Catering to an often demanding business segment.

Still, TruServ, Ace Hardware and Do-it Best recommend pro sales for retailers willing to do the work; all three buying goups offer comprehensive programs to help their members sell to the pro segment.

Selling to pros is the complete opposite of selling retail.

systems and better reliability on roof structures." The assumed Coefficient of Variance (COV) for E in MSR lumber grades is 0.11, allowing for the necessary distribution of the load in a wooden structure. A less stiff component, such as visually graded lumber, whose assumed COV for E is 0.25, results in more of the load being applied to fewer components, reducing the overal rigidity of the structure and reducing reliability.

These examples of the virtues of MSR lumber are also good selling points for dealers to utilize to interest builders to purchase the product. Another of MSR lumber's strong suits is better uniformity among suppliers. After all, the consistent rating system of the product extends throughout the industry, allowing builders to shop for the best price without having to worry about sacrificing quality. Likewise, MSR grades can be produced from different wood species from various sources, enabling builders to maintain their confidence in the product's quality even if they switch to a less expensive supply.

f UMBER retailers and distributors know that premium l-./quality lumber is imperative for a successful construction project. These professionals prosper or perish by the wood they sell. With this in mind, how can dealers be assured that their lumber is top quality?

Machine Stress Rated (MSR) lumber is one possible answer. Lumber that passes the MSR inspection has met specifications called for by the grade stamp. As a result, MSR lumber is less likely to fail under its rating than visually inspected lumber.

"Weak boards cause the majority of problems in lumber applications," asserts James D. Logan, president of Metriguard Inc., Pullman, Wa., an MSR equipment manufacturer. "A direct physical measurement of lumber's mechanical properties is more reliable and accurate than estimates based on visual inspection alone."

As opposed to visually inspecting lumber that passes by at 50 to 60 lugs per minute, the physical properties of each piece of MSR lumber are measured during prodution. According to Logan, the MSR process "weeds out weak lumber." He further notes that the results of each MSR inspection are verified each shift by a sample test of five to l0 pieces. With such an onslaught of boards to look at during a visual inspection, it is not uncommon for a human to miss slope-of-grain defects or shake failures that a bending testing machine would detect.

The failure of lumber during or after construction is laborious and expensive to correct for all concerned, to say nothing of being a reputation wrecker for a dealer. MSR lumber has less variability in stiffness, allowing for designs that hold to tighter tolerances and guard against expensive failures. "With MSR lumber, you have better control over the elasticity value (E-value) of the wood," says Logan. "Therefore. vou have better control over the bounce in floor

Assured quality also reduces the percentage ofdiscarded lumber at a iob site. "Contractors and builders are able to

utilize more of the material they purchase because all MSR lumber must pass stringent physical standards in order to earn its grade," maintains Logan.

As a vote of confidence, more than l.l billion bd. ft. of MSR lumber was producedin 1997.

THE QUALITY of Machine Stress Rated lumber stacks uo well.

84 Opens New Format Store

This month 84 Lumber is unveiling its new prototype 84 Plus combination hardware store/lumberyard in Dayton, Tn.

The new format includes a 10,000-sq. ft. hardware store with a small showroom for kitchens. windows and doors and 5OVo more SKUs than a typical 84 unit, particularly in plumbing, electrical, hardware and paint. Since the stores will be of comparable size to traditional 84 yards, more building materials will be stocked in outdoor sheds.

The chain hopes to open 20 to 30 84 Plus stores over the next several years in small markets lacking a warehouse home center. Existing stores in similar markets may be reformatted.

Other areas of expansion for the chain this year are a new builder financing program and the addition of a second Maggie's Showroom, two component plants and more installed sales centers.

G-P To Build Arkansas OSB Plant

Georgia-Pacific has selected Calhoun County, Ar., as the site of a new OSB plant that will ultimately replace older, less efficient structural panel operations.

Engineering and permitting work has begun, and the facility should begin full production in early 2001, producing approximately 410 million sq. ft. annually (3/8" basis). With 16 softwood plywood plants, six OSB plants and total annual capacity of 7 billion sq. ft., Georgia-Pacific reportedly is the largest producer of structural wood panels in the U.S.

Georgia-Pacific has not yet determined which facilities will be shuttered, and if they will be plywood or OSB plants.

Old Dominion Lumber Co., LLC, a new lumber treater, has leased land and several buildings at a former Martinsville, Va., DuPont nylon plant.

According to B.E. "Ed" Brammer, managing director, the company will purchase *$7-$9 million" annually of raw lumber from local mills and provide "added value" to distributors by sorting, grading and drying the hardwood for furniture companies. "We are primarily dealing with export lumber dealers," he added.

Besides the factory the 16-acre plot contains paved roads and a rail link. The $10 million start-up business will employ 25 people and open in January 2000. Paul Pritchard, ex-Timber Ridge Lumber Co., Granite Falls, N.C., is president and chief executive officer, with Gregory Brammer as sales manager.

Devlce Explodes At Lowe's

No threats were made and no motive has yet been uncovered after a small explosive device detonated inside the plumbing department at Lowe's, Elizabethtown, Ky.

Classified as a "low ordinance detonation," the device, 5" to 6" long and about l" to l-112" in diameter, detonated about 30 minutes before closing Jan.24, causing no injuries or damage to the building.

According to police, an employee discovered the device after he went to investigate a loud sound and noticed something burning and people running from the area. Within minutes, police arrived to help evacuate the building and block off the parking lot.

Wholesale Confidence Builds

Wholesale-distributors' confidence in current business conditions decreased on a short-term basis but increased for the long term, according to a recent Arthur Andenen survey.

Confidence in company prospects for the current quarter compared to the fourth quarter of 1998 slipped from 120.0 to 115.6. The index operates on a base of 100, recorded in the second quarter of 1991.

Confidence for the next 12 months compared to the previous 12 months rose from 107.4 to 107.9.

Construction Boom Leaves

Drywall In Short Supply

While the burgeoning housing market i-s r6ceiVing kudos for aiding our robust economy, the boom is also being targeted for causing nationwide drywall shortages and record prices. This despite factories operating at full capacity of roughly 27 billion sq. ft. of board annually.

This time last year, wallboard was selling at $9 a sheet, compared to $11 today. Worse, commodity scarcity is producing costly construction delays for contractors and their customers, who must pay additional interest in building loans while their residential or commercial projects await completion.

The shortages are being felt especially in the Houston area and throughout the Southeast. "I've got at least 25 houses that I can't get boarded," moans Bob Pasarela, owner of Pasarela Drywall, Hudson, Fl.

He's not alone. Houston's Emerald Builders has 79 houses awaiting drywall, with plans to continue building 15 new homes a week. Sadly, the product isn't forthcoming anytime soon, never mind the approaching peak construction season. "I don't know what I'm going to do come June," laments vice president Craig Dudley.

Contractor desperation is such that many have resorted to paying retail, only to find that big boxes have limited how many sheets customers can purchase. "You start to beg," notes Christin Cupp, Beazer Homes USA Inc., Tampa, Fl., who reported that a local Home Depot would sell her only 2O boards, not enough tojusti$ the expense. Depot spokesman Jerry Shields understands customer dissatisfaction, but notes, "We can't get as much as we need either."

His words were echoed by the company's Rod Johnson, a Thmpa, Fl., merchandising manager, who sighed, "I wish we could take care of everybody." These heartfelt musings will be of little use to local subcontractor Circle Industries USA, which is frantically trying to locate over 2 million sq. ft. to complete a Marriott hotel and convention center. The firm's president revealed that drywall shipments are running four weeks behind schedule.

With single family homes at a2D-year high of l.4l million units, an unusually mild winter has compounded the problem, permitting continued construction during a period when bad weather normally prohibits such work. The country's remodeling fixation has further reduced supplies.

Happiln relief is on the way, although not immediately, USG Corp., the nation's largest sheetrock producer, plans to open two more plants by year's end, with a third coming soon after. Currently, the firm is operating 23 hours a day, according to a company spokesperson, a figure that has continued unabated for the past 15 months. In addition, Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Lafarge Corp have new plants slated to debut later this vear and next.

Auto Racing Ads Reach D-l-Yers

Home improvement stores increasingly are looking to auto racing to carry their message to do-it-yourselfers.

Research shows that racing fans are loyal to their favorite drivers and the drivers' corporate sponsors. In addition, motorsports fans tend to be d-iyers.

"The typical NASCAR fan that shops our store spends 25Vo more than the average customer does," says Robert Tillman, chairman and ceo of Lowe's Cos.

Lowe's, which has sponsored a car in the Winston Cup races since 1995, will spend more than $20 million this year on racing-related advertising.

The company plasters its name and logo all over a car driven by Mike Skinner, even under the hood.

Home Depot joined the fray this year and will spend far less, but , says advertising manager Dick Sullivan, "hopefully, we'll outsmart them."

In February, Home Depot began sponsoring a car owned by former NFL coach Joe Gibbs, with driver Tony Stewart.

"We intend to make a total commitment to NASCAR," Sullivan says.

"We will build three 53-foot rigs, the largest on the road, to carry our message to our more than 700 stores. At as many as he can make, Tony will be there to sign autographs and sometimes talk to our guests."

Depot is distributing 80 million ad inserts featuring Stewart and Gibbs' Pontiac. estimated to reach 80Vo of U.S. households. In a cross-promotion with Coca-Cola, Stewart's visage will appear on thousands of vending machines at Home Depot stores.

The chain also acquired the rights to become "the official home improvement warehouse" of NASCAR.

In response, Lowe's paid Speedway Motor Sports Inc. to become "the official home improvement warehouse of Speedway Motorsports." As part of the deal, Lowe's is the only home improvement chain that will be allowed to erect billboards at the six tracks operated by Speedway. And, the Charlotte Motor Speedway near Charlotte, N.C., has been renamed Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Auto racing promotions, advertising and sponsorships also have been successful for product manufacturers

and other retailers such as Ace Hardware and True Value, which awards $2,500 to the "Hard Charger of the Race," the drivers who run the most laps in the top three positions.

Wood Vs. Concrete Study

Wood construction is faster and less expensive than concrete construction, according to two studies commissioned by the Florida Wood Council.

The first compared the cost, under the South Florida Building Code, of a two-story concrete block home shell and an identical wood-framed shell.

Designed to meet ll0 mph winds, the shells were engineered with a formed and poured bond beam at the second floor and roof line. The concrete home took eight weeks from the pouring of the slab to the completion of the shell, while the wood shell took five weeks.

The second study, based on state adopted alternatives to meeting wind loads, compared identical single story structures built according to the Standard Building Code.

Both showed an approximately 2OVo cost advantage of wood over concrete.

Dealers Stock Up For Y2K Flap

Do it Best Corp. has provided its member-retailers with an emergency preparedness plan and a six-page list of emergency products that would likely be in demand in the case of Y2K complications or more traditional emergencies such as hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding.

As a result of substantial media coverage of potential Y2K problems, when computers may misinterpret the year 2000 as 1900, consumers are already buying and stocking many products in anticipation of power shortages on a local or regional basis. The products on the co-op's emergency list are designed to help consumers during an extended power outage-

The list contains roughly 300 items, some of which were added solely because of the Y2K situation. Items in the power source/lighting category such as generators, kerosene lamps and flashlights are similar to the products recommended for traditional disursters.

The new list also contains extra heating products since potential power outages would occur in the winter, as well as water filtration and purification products. An expanded food preparation category includes products such as canned heat, iron skillets and propane gas grills, while storage items include gas cans, plastic containers and even a portable storage building.

"Our purchasing staff is increasing inventories in our retail service centers, but as vendors run out of products, we could experience delays in receiving those items," warns Ray Treen, vice president ofpurchasing for Do it Best.

Last month, members were sent a bulletin packet to order emergency items according to their market needs, as well as a newly designed plan-ogram of emergency items.

The co-op is also preparing an emergency check list that retailers can distribute to their customers. Retailers who want to build a display should either stock selected emergency items or plan a "one-each" display and special order the products for each customer. Do it Best suggests calling the display "emergency needs" or "emergency preparedness" to focus on a broader emergency area besides the Y2K situation.

This is meant to help keep retailers from exploiting or creating unneeded panic around potential Y2K problems. "We will avoid panic promotion of the Y2K problem by promoting products normally handled by our members," said Bill Zielke, vice president of marketing for Do it Best. "Nevertheless, consumers see the threat of the Y2K situation as a very serious issue. We want to make sure our members can either supply the items consumers are demanding or ease the worries resulting from the situation."

At Do it Best's May market, members will be able to attend Y2K seminars and other information sessions to find out how other members are preparing for potential problems. Items from the emergency list, as well as some drop-ship items, will be displayed in a separate room from the main exhibit floor.

"We've talked to Y2K experts, and no one knows for sure what will happen on Jan. l, 2000, but most believe at least some problems will occurmany of which will not have been anticipated," Zielke said. "Therefore, it's probably reasonable to plan and prepare for it."

SFPA Reassigns Managers

The Southern Forest Products Association has completed the final phase of its staff reorganization, by assigning its four marketing managers to target specific audiences and customer groups.

"Our goal has been to specialize these staff positions, based upon the individuals' area of expertise," explained marketing v.p. Jeff Easterling.

For 1999, Doug Burgin will concentrate on architects, specifiers and engineers; Eric Gee, builders, contractors and building inspectors; Richard Kleiner, builders, contractors, retailers and wholesalers, and Ewell Smith, architects, specifiers, retailers and wholesalers. All will target students.

Additionally, Burgin will oversee continuing education and accreditation for Southern Pine Council seminars; Gee will monitor wood requirements related to building codes; Kleiner will handle development of case study programs and binders, and Smith will direct trade show participation and special promotions.

Lowe's Changes Ad Practices

As a result of a consulting firm's tests, Lowe's has amended several of its longtime advertising strategies.

The changes include deletion ofcartoon figures from the #2 home improvement retailer's circulars and a stronger emphasis on tv ads.

"We've got to be smarter in the way we use our dollars," asserted Dale Pond, v.p., merchandising and marketing. He further noted that the tests, administered by QualPro, Nashville, Tn., revealed that customers prefer pictures of real people over cartoon figures and that additional circular pages don't improve sales. Lowe's newspaper circulars are delivered at least 25 times a year to 30-40 million homes. Future page counts will be shortened by 24 pages, to a maximum of 48.

After admitting that tv "has an even more important role than we thought," Pond disclosed that tv ad expenditures will increase over ZOVo this year. The strong link between consumers and sports marketing was another factor QualPro addressed, affirming Lowe's Nascar auto racing sponsorship.

Lowe's denied that the findings led to its recent decision to place its $100 million broadcast ad account in review. W.B. Doner, its current agency, is among five firms in competition for the company's business.

G-P Plywood Stars on TV

Georgia-Pacific has launched a multi-million dollar consumer tv ad program to promote its plywood.

The 30-second spots on G-P Plus Plywood Sturdi-Floor are expected to run on cable stations, including the Weather Channel, Fox Sports and Home & Garden Television.

Prefab Housing Growth

Worldwide demand for prefabricated housing is projected ro increase 2.2Vo annually through 2OO2to l.l million unis worth $63 billion, according to the Freedonia Group.

The U.S. and Japan, which accounted for more than TOVo of world demand in 1997, will continue to dominate the market, although growth will be more rapid in other regions, especially Latin America.
