Annuel hoductton 225,000,000 board feet

Addrcss P.O. Box 1608, Jasper, Al. 35502 slowed in the late 1970s, tbe firm entered the wood readng business in Ftorida The Auburndale plant produced its first cbarge in late 1978. Although there were then 36 treaters within a l5-mile radius, the facility tunred a profit in its first month of operation.

\M tro its acquisition of the assets of five forrrer Chesapealce Wood Treating plants last year, Universal Forest Products significantly incteased its already sizable foothold in the wood preserving industry. Universal's 15 reating plans located across tbe country from New England to the Rockies produced nearly a half-billion board feet of CCA pressure treated lumber in 193. And that impnessive total is almost ceruain to be eclipsed this year as the Chesapeake plants bave been operated by Universal only since October.

Although the rrajority of the company's facilities are in the more heavily populated Northeastern U.S., the Southern Division plays an important role both in its past history and growing funre. Established in 1955 in Michigan as a wholesale sup'plier of lumber and components to the mobile home industry, Universal built strategically-located manufacturing and distribution yards and becane the world's largest builder of engineered roof trusses for manufactured housing (a position it still holds). When the growth of that industry

After properties were added in Indiana and Pennsylvania, a large wood treater was purchased in Union City, Ga., in 1982. Subsequently that facility (now one of the company's bigher volume plans) was totally rebuilt under the direction of chemist Ian Stalker, an internationalty recognized authority on lumber Eeating' Today Stalker is vice president of wood preservation and heads a full-time staff of graduate chemists who supervise installation and continuously nonitor the operation of Universal's Eeating facilities. A third Southern plant was added last year in Holly Hill, S.C. Universal targeted the do-it-yourself market in the lae 1980s, entering with its CCA treated products - lattice, fencing, Deck Necessities and other value-added specialties. In five years, the firnt's share of consumerrelated products rose from 5Vo to slEo of its sales.

Last year, Universal treated 48$ million board feet of lumber, 90Vo of which was southern pine with the remainder ponderosa pine, her/fir, etc.

Universal's history of dealing with production lines - and in satisfying tle requirements of HUD, NCBCS' third party testing agencies, etc., in fabricating trussestaught it the importance of standing behind the quality of is products. (Nearly all its treated lumber includes a lifetime limited warranty) Another advantage for Universal in terrrs of its ability to grow with d-i-y reteilers is that it combines value-added nanufacturing (ripping/trimming/painting/assembly) with CCA treating, comprehensive marketing assistance and nationwide distribution. That means every piece of treated conrmodity lumber is grade-stamped and end-tagged to ensure proper penehation and retention. That treated fencing products are made with jigs and automatic nailing equipment. And specialties are produced not just to standard rules but in grades consumers want.

"Whatever a store wants, we can supply it on one Euck," says Ed Galt, general sales and purchasing mannger for Southeast Wood Treating, Jasper, Al.

The company began in Louisville, Al., in 1979, later adding other plants and production facilities in Alabama and Florida. And as the company has grown into one of the largest treaters in the south, it has expanded its product line to include the latest developments in wood reating technology.

Their comprehensive range of products includes CCA lumber treated in all concentrations, water repellent lumber guaranteed for 50 years, fire retardant wood and countless outdoor specialty products, ftom designer mail box posts to decorative fencing.

When customers need something special, the company prides itself on being able to produce items to exact specifications. Their mills can prcpare even the most difficult sizes, to help customers meet the most demanding architectural requirements. The treater figures dealers shouldn't have to miss sales just because the pieces aren't nonnally stocked by their suppliers.

Southeast attributes its success to:

Quality Control (they prepare lumber in their own sawmill, produce specialty products in their own remanufacturing plant, and deliver products with their own fleet of 30 modern fucks).

. Product Knowledge (highly experienced sales and purchasing staffs in rhe reating plant and mill).

. Continuing Service after the Sale (lpC product coding for faster pricing and easier inventory control; Electronic Data Service to keep customers updated and informed with detailed monthly and quarterly sales reports).

To emphasize is commitrrent to quality, Southeast switched over a year ago from treating with generic chemicals to using Hickson's nationallyknown Wolman brand. The changeover has been costly for the company, but Southeast is deterrrined to produce the best product it possibly can.

I t may be the treated wood company of the future. And it's all service.

Building Products Plus Co. is a one-year-old full service specialty disribution company selling to users of wood products in Texas, contiguous states and Mexico. With a 12,000 sq. ft. facility for offices, distribution and storage in South Houston and a lumber yard in Corpus Christi, Tx., it is actually four companies in one (Building Products Plus, American Pole & Timber Co., Fire Retardant Wood Co. and Gulf Coast Bulkheading Supply). Co-owners William Plant and Dorian Benn say their service is as much lnow-how as wood products. Because the project is more important to them than the product, they wok througb it with the customer from start to finish.

"The d-i-y revolution is typified by the macho, 'Home ImProvement' tlpe male with work gloves and nail apron who goes to the lumber yard and picks every Piece himself," says Planr "Now we atre seeing the buy-i-y revolution, typified by well educated consumers more interested in the specifications, the value and the suitability of the producl This buyer is less tactile, more disceming and willing to make an intellectual buYing decision based on a comparison of features and benefits, then over the phone give you a oedit card number and have it delivered to the site. The b-i-yer might be in a dress or a gray suit and sit on a condo committee and never see the

BP+ helps users decide what wood products to buy and where to get them They service dealers, archit@ts, general contractors and remodelers. Specialties include fann and ranch fencing and barns; utility, telephone and structural poles; Wolmanized lumber and treated plywood; fire retardant wood and plywood; framing, siding and specialty wood; foundation, bulkheading and marine timben, and wholesale and consulting services. Recent large projects have included anusement parks, zoos and a 9,000 sq. ft. custom home. A higb percentage of the material they sell is pressure Eeated wood, but they have found a market in manufacbred wood products as well.

Flexibility is the company's hallmark. "Rigidity and narrow-mindedness doom your business," says Plant. He invites inquiries on design, installation, materials, whatever, and promises to service all product information requests however small or unusual. He even invites customers to call evenings and weekends.

The aim is to offer the maximum service per sale, operating with the lowest possible overheads and fastest turns. The company has a huge library of design, construction and specification data, up-to-date price, availability and grade infomtation on a sophisticated database system, experienced management, well-developed sales contacts, and its own fleet of trucks.

Sales for the first year were well into seven figures, a giant step towards surpassing projections of $5 million annually within three years.
